Bodies of Water
Kinrin Lake, located near the town center, is a picturesque destination known for its morning mists and scenic beauty. The name 'Kinrin' means gold scales, inspired by the glittering surface of the lake when reflecting the evening sun. Visitors can stroll along the footpath around the lake's perimeter, passing by hot springs and a small shrine. The lake is fed by both hot and cold spring waters, creating a beautiful mist on colder mornings.
Is actually very beautiful and water is crystal clear. But it is quite small, the place is over loaded with tourist. I came all the way the in 2 hours and the tour only lasted for leat than an hour because I am not interested with the shops nearby food stalls and omoyage. Do waln to the lake from station, the scenary is beautiful. Riding house, taxi or bus is expensive. Mount Yufu is there when you exit the station. Also take yufuin no mori train there, it is worth the experience. Beautiful.

Visited on Dec 2, 2024 — and it was like stepping into a fairytale especially the Kinrin Lake. Fall arrived late, so the leaves were still in full vibrant color — fiery reds, golden yellows, and rich oranges everywhere. Yufuin Floral Village was full of life, with many tourists enjoying the cool weather, taking photos, and wandering through the charming streets. It was a bit crowded, but in a fun and festive way. There are lots of cute cafes and souvenir shops, each with its own quirky or cozy theme — perfect for grabbing snacks, coffee, or one-of-a-kind gifts. If you love whimsical scenery, autumn colors, and photogenic little corners, this place is a must-visit — especially in fall!

Kinrin Lake is a breathtakingly beautiful natural wonder. Famous for its crystal-clear, emerald-green waters, fed by both hot and cold springs bubbling up from the lakebed, it creates an almost unreal clarity. Read and watch videos about the magic peaks early in the morning, when ethereal mist rises gently off the warm water, shrouding the surrounding trees and traditional bridge in a soft, mystical haze but went there around noon not having the chance to witness that amazing scene myself. The lush forested hills cradle the lake, making the scene feel serene and ancient. It's a small but profoundly peaceful and picturesque spot, truly feeling like a hidden gem straight out of a Japanese painting. A must-see for its unique, tranquil beauty.
Sorlo S — Google review
Lake Kinrin is a beautiful and still spot, offering a moment of calm despite the crowds. As part of most local tours groups, it can get very busy, but its serene waters and scenic surroundings make it worth the short walk from the main tourist area. A peaceful stop if you're already in the area.

Beautiful autumn colours! Nice place to walk. There are lots of cafes and food joints at the nearby Yufuin Floral village and the surroundings. Very popular place.

Love this place, once you visit Yufuin, here is the place that you should come. It locates at the end of the Yufuin floral village. Lucky that the time I visited, there was no crowds so we could take time to enjoy this beautiful place
Khoong Y — Google review
Kinrin Lake, near Yufuin Village, was a serene and picturesque highlight of our tour with Gogoday Travel. Just a short walk from the village, the lake’s calm waters and surrounding natural beauty made it a perfect spot for peaceful reflection and photography. The scenery was stunning throughout, and the gentle ambiance offered a quiet escape from the busier areas nearby. Our guide, pointed out the best spots for photos and shared interesting details about the lake, enriching the visit. Kinrin Lake is highly recommended for anyone seeking a tranquil and scenic experience in the Fukuoka area.

Nestled in the picturesque town of Yufuin, Yufuin Floral Village is a delightful theme park that transports visitors to the charming countryside of England's Cotswolds. This enchanting destination features quaint shops and cafes, making it an ideal spot for leisurely strolls and unique shopping experiences.
The shop sells a variety of Studio Ghibli and popular cartoon merchandise, which is quite common in many Asian cities and not particularly unique. However, the Owl Exhibition Hall (ticket: 900 yen) was one of the most memorable highlights of my trip. Inside, there are more than a dozen real owls that you can touch and take photos with—an exciting and rare experience. It’s probably the most unusual animal encounter I’ve ever had. I highly recommend visiting the Owl Hall.

I really liked the view and overall vibe of Yufuin. The scenery is beautiful, especially around Mount Yufu and Kinrin Lake — it feels calm and relaxing, perfect for a slow walk or a morning coffee. But honestly, the main street is mostly for shopping, with a lot of souvenir stores and cute cafés. It’s nice to look around for a bit, but since I’m not really into shopping, I didn’t find much else to do. Still, the atmosphere and landscape make the trip worth it, especially if you go early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
Nattapob P — Google review
Tucked away in the scenic hot spring town of Yufuin, the Yufuin Floral Village feels like you’ve stepped directly into the pages of a fairy tale. From the moment you walk through the entrance, the storybook vibe is undeniable. Cobblestone pathways wind between half-timbered cottages draped in vibrant flowers, with babbling streams and quaint bridges completing the picture-perfect scene. It’s an Instagrammer's dream, but more than that, it’s a truly enchanting experience. The village is a delightful area for shopping and dining. The numerous small shops are a treasure trove of unique souvenirs, from local crafts and whimsical trinkets you won’t find anywhere else. For pop culture fans, the themed shops are a major highlight. You can browse a charming Harry Potter-themed shop for a touch of wizardry and then step into the beloved world of Studio Ghibli at the Totoro shop, which is always a crowd-pleaser. The magic is especially potent for little ones. My kids were utterly captivated by the Snoopy Cafe, with its adorable Peanuts-themed treats and decor, and the Miffy Bakery, where everything is almost too cute to eat. While it’s not a large theme park, the density of charm is impressive. I found that spending 2 to 3 hours here is perfect. This gives you ample time to leisurely explore every nook and cranny, pop into the shops that catch your eye, enjoy a snack or a meal, and simply soak in the delightful atmosphere without feeling rushed.
Sorlo S — Google review
Yes, it's a hotel with an entrance inside the Earth Market. Try your best to hit this spot before the main tourist group descends or preparing to get used to manoeuvring the crowded alleyways. The village has a cute atmosphere, with mini farms, animal cafes and numerous shops selling Ghibli products. Everyone is taking photos every few steps. It is not a very big place. Unless you are entering and looking into every shop, you can cover this in less than an hour.

Yufuin Floral Village is a charming, storybook-like destination that feels like stepping into a European fairy tale right in Japan! The quaint cobblestone paths, colorful flowers, and cottage-style shops create a magical atmosphere perfect for strolling and taking photos. Each little shop is uniquely themed—selling souvenirs, sweets, and crafts—and there are even spots inspired by famous characters like Peter Rabbit and Studio Ghibli. While small in size, the village is beautifully detailed and full of charm. It’s a wonderful stop when visiting Yufuin, especially for families, couples, or anyone who loves a whimsical experience. A delightful hidden gem!
Kath — Google review
Visited the floral village to have a look at the Ghibli items and it did not disappoint! The little huts were classified by the different Ghibli movies and there was a wide selection available. Granted, the prices for some of the items were rather high (especially the paper theatres), but there are still smaller items that were more affordable. We bought a Totoro towel for ¥660 which wasn't too bad. Even if you aren't looking to buy anything, it's still worth a visit to admire the lovely place.
Jonathan C — Google review
Really nice and interesting place to visit, even that it is a shopping g street. You can find lots of options of Japanese food and condiments, as well as walk for a moment and enjoy the view. For the manga lovers, there are several options that are so great to buy, as souvenirs and something to take away and remember your visit.
Jonatan V — Google review
Crammed, fake, touristy… basically any adjectives you can come up with about Ghibli films - but the exact opposite of them. Each shop looks just about alright from the outside, and the second you decided to go inside it turns into Temu, selling you low-grade Ghibli merch. Next to these shops are some chained goats. These poor things are destined to be stuck in the extremely confined space, forced to be watched by the tourists who are like a feet away from it. This is the kind of Ghibli children get during the Great Depression. The biggest surprise I get from this place? An even bigger merch shop… that sells a man-sized, fake purple crystal🙏 . Yea I’d love to carry that thing and walk all the way through Yunotsubo street. Or just parcel it to my home, I don’t know, cuz I’m a moron.

Japanese regional restaurant
Unagi restaurant
Yufu Mabushi "Shin" Yufuin Ekimae Branch is a casual eatery near the train station that serves claypot rice dishes topped with roasted chicken, eel, or Bungo beef. The main restaurant is a bit far from the station, so this branch is convenient for those with limited time. There might be a wait to be seated in the Japanese-style room, but once seated, towels, drinks and appetizers are served.
🍲 Incredible soup rice (汤饭) experience in Yufu! The beef is an absolute must—tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. It’s hands-down the star of the show! My daughter went with the chicken, and while it was okay, it didn’t quite wow us like the beef did. If you’re in Yufu, don’t miss this spot—especially if you’re craving something warm, hearty, and unforgettable!
Yvonne C — Google review
Only giving 2 stars — this place is all hype. The food was average at best, nothing special. I ordered the chicken and beef rice pots. Both came out with soggy rice, and the bottom — which should be crispy and charred — was just cooked still soggy. The chicken was way overcooked and dry, and the beef was just average. I only waited around 15 minutes, which was fine, but honestly, it’s not a restaurant worth lining up for. They have a TV playing non-stop, showing you how to eat the rice pot — and the “final step” is pouring stock into the pot to scrape off the rice at the bottom… basically helping them clean the pot while you eat. Another downside: cash only, which is pretty inconvenient. Staff were clearly in a rush — from serving the food to collecting payment, it felt like they just wanted to turn over tables as quickly as possible. I won’t be coming back. Not worth the hype.

Beef pot : the beef is tender and juicy. There are various spices for you to mix. There are 3 steps of eating the clay pot rice. First, eat it like it is. 2nd step, adding spice and fermented veggies with sauce. 3rd step, you just pouring soup into the clay pot and mix the rice with soup. All in all, the food is nice but the service could be better. There was no queue when I walked up to the store on 2nd Fl. Waiter asked me to sit and read menu first. Later, he just came to get order but I haven’t ordered drink yet, he just walked away. Later, another waiter also forgot to set up table with chopsticks and towel. So they served the foods without hesitation on the table setting. I confused on how to eat, waitress also don’t know why I asked her how to eat until I showed that there’s no chopsticks. Cannot say that they were busy since there are plenty seat empty. This service shows how carefulness they are. If you care much about service, I recommend this restaurant; food is good.

Beef rice is the best as meat is of very high quality. Roasted Eel is a bit disappointed. Side dish is of reasonable quality. I'll give 3.5 stars if possible. The rice is tasty for sure but definitely not the best I've had. In terms of price, it's not the cheapest. C/P is only average. Tables are packed tight. I'd recommend only if queuing doesn't take more than 30 mins.
Calvin — Google review
Came here at 10:30 so it wasn’t that crowded. Beef was very tasty, almost well done but texture was still quite tender. Burnt unagi has a distinct taste. Great taste.

Delicious grilled beef with special steamed rice with an array of pickled vegetables, wasabi, spice and sauces and shiitake miso soup. Made for an amazing umami taste experience.

Be ready for a queue of at least 30 mins during meal times. But the food is definitely worth it! I love the squeezi-ness of the place and if you manage to sit facing the window, you get a nice view of the mountains surrounding Yufuin.
Michelle L — Google review
Long queue but it’s worth it. The beef was melt in the mouth. The side dish was tasty too. Saw the way they cooked the clay pot rice… fast and furious.

Great place to get a commanding view of Yufuin. It was pretty windy when I came but wasn’t cloudy. There’s a convenience shop here but nothing much inside. Importantly, the toilets were closed. I’m guessing that is because it’s winter.

Great lookout here before reaching Yufuin city.
Randy N — Google review
You can see the entire town from here. The view at daytime is good, but that in the morning is more beautiful. You can see morning dew covering the whole town. That view is very fantastical and worth seeing.
Kaz T — Google review
It’s like a nice road stop to take because the view is definitely beautiful, both from the lookout point as well as the backdrop of the place, too. You can see Yufuin in front of you and when you turn to your back, you can see the very beautiful greenery of the mountainside. If I remember correctly, there’s a toilet and a store where you can buy ice cream and perhaps other foodstuff and items. Didn’t check out because I was only interested in taking photos of the view.

Ascend to the heights of Mount Tsurumi on the Beppu Ropeway, a thrilling gondola ride that offers breathtaking views of Beppu city, Beppu Bay, Oita City, and Mount Yufu. The 1375-meter mountain is a sight to behold throughout the year, with snow in winter, lush greenery in spring, vibrant azalea blooms in summer, and stunning autumn colors.
A very nice ride up and down the mountain. Spectacular views at the top of Beppu and the coastline. Nice and peaceful at the top once you get off the gondola car… which like many other things in Japan had someone talking constantly on a speaker explaining who knows what. Even had competing songs on the main speaker and the English message playing on another speaker 🤦‍♀️ Price was very reasonable and was about 1/3 of the price of that type of thing in Canada.
Jen M — Google review
Great spot to get away from the city and enjoy Kyushu nature in an easy way. I was here on a hot summer day so it is so cool and refreshing up in the mountain. I wish I have brought picnic mats and lunch with me. I do recommend people stay for 1-2 hours to climb to the top, siting quietly in the forest solely feels nice too.
Nguyễn A — Google review
It's a missable attraction. And that's coming from someone who loves these kind of funny transport things. The view at the top is nice don't get me wrong but there's literally nothing to do once your up there other than catch the view and then head back down. The gondola has quite a cool retro vibe as well which is nice but yeah it's not a must but if you happen to be passing and have some time to kill its more fun than sitting on your hands. Also when I went it was pretty empty but they were still running every 20min so I had very little wait. If there was any kind of waiting or crowds I honestly wouldn't bother unless you know what your doing
Louis S — Google review
Fabulous couple of hours spent here. After hoping off the ropeway at the top, we hiked that little bit further to reach the top even though I was wearing inappropriate shoes. The views are breathtaking. Well worth the effort to get to and money well spent.

The Beppu Ropeway is easily accessible, taking only about 40 minutes by bus from Beppu City. The ride up Mount Tsurumi is quick and offers amazing panoramic views of Beppu Bay and the city's steaming landscape, with spectacular scenery year-round. The 15-minute hike from the upper station to the 1,375m summit is definitely worth it for the full 360-degree vista. At the top, you can follow a short, interesting unique pilgrimage path to visit shrines dedicated to the Seven Lucky Gods. Totally rewarding new experience
EC C — Google review
Fun activity if you're in the are, it offers amazing view of Beppu city. The ride up takes about 10 minutes and there is a small gift shop along with a walking track for visiting the 7 deities . It gets very windy at the top so hold on to your hats!
Benjamin Z — Google review
Great place to be if you want to feel nature. After riding the cable car, there’s a mountain and a pilgrimage you can explore. Would definitely check out if you are in Beppu!
Paolo P — Google review
No crowd today when we got there before 4pm. The ride up to the top took about 10 minutes and the view going up was fantastic. However at the top, it was blustery and very cold (-2C) and the conditions (over cast and misty) didn't allow a clear view of the scenery but can imagine it would be really lovely on a clear day. I was lucky to see some hoar snow on the ground when we climbed up to the top ! I'm glad I went but I'm not sure about my partner who found it too cold!

Myoban Yunosato Onsen

Myoban Yunosato Onsen is a historic onsen village nestled in the wooded hills of Beppu City, Japan. It is renowned for its unique yunohana mineral deposits that have been utilized in bathhouses for centuries. The village offers visitors a chance to witness the traditional harvesting of these minerals and indulge in bathing in mineral-rich hot springs. With picturesque thatched-roof buildings, Myoban Yunosato Onsen provides a glimpse into Japan's onsen heritage.
If you love sulphur bath salts, this is where you should come! Also beautiful traditional huts.
Giovanni B — Google review
The hot spring water at Myoban Yunosato Onsen is truly stunning — it has a beautiful blue color that makes the experience unique and memorable. The bathing area is quite basic, equipped only with body wash but no shampoo or hair conditioner. There are, however, lockers and hair dryers available for use, which is convenient. The entrance fee is 600 yen. You’ll need to buy a ticket from the vending machine before entering and hand the ticket to the staff at the entrance. Overall, it’s a simple but charming onsen, worth a visit for its distinctive blue water and authentic atmosphere.

The public hot spring is cheaper than most. It is quite small though. Not worth it for that. Huts are quite cool to look at. Place is known for allowing people to rent out their own private hot spring (the huts). Come there for that. Hut in pic does not contain hot spring. This was one you could walk through. I’m assuming the ones you can rent have them.

The Xin Cuisine business may require a long queue, so when I came in like this, the price was too small for the portion, and the seasoning was not very good... I ordered sushi after seeing a Bungo beef specialty store. I felt that the meat had a problem with its freshness, and it didn’t taste as fresh and sweet as the meat. The noodle soup tastes very average, and the rice bowl tastes not very good either. In fact, I wish I could eat the chain store version which would be better. I don’t recommend it very much~ (Original)

Bakery
Miffy Mori no Bakery is a delightful spot in Yufuin, near Lake Kinrinko, offering an array of Miffy-themed souvenirs and delectable treats. The bakery features special edition Miffy souvenirs alongside an assortment of Miffy-shaped buns and sweets that are perfect for gifting. With a variety of flavors available, there's something to suit every palate. Additionally, the second floor provides a dining space with plenty of photo opportunities.
Full of excitement for both young and not so young. There are all kinds of miffy bakery products - brioche, buns and matcha ice cream. Check out the sitting area on level 1 upstairs. Miffy origami, anyone?

After getting my mum hooked to Miffy, we started to drop by Miffy themed places more often including this bakery and souvenir shop side by side. If you are not in a hurry, dine in on the second floor with those cutely shaped buns. Their Miffy anpan is a best seller. Take home souvenirs include that canned bread. The yakitate Miffy bun keycharms are adorable!

For the miffy lovers, this place is heaven to visit! The store has a small bakery but all the pastries are miffy themed and so cute! There’s also a dining area so you can enjoy the pastries with a drink or ice cream. Next door is a cute store with lots of merch and also merch only available at that store and area. I highly recommend getting the miffy shaped breads or cubes. Also, visit the 2nd floor to get cute pictures with the miffy decor.

Love this place!! Everything is so cute and well thought out. They have books for kids to read and enough chairs. Buns were delicious and so cute to look at. Decor is top notch. Definitely worth a visit. They even have a gift shop right next to the bakery, where you can satisfy your miffy merchandise fix!

Love this cute little muddy place. They have area to eat upstairs but not many place to sit, but atmosphere is cute.

A cute shop for Miffy lovers. Everything looks so nice. The manager is so friendly. However, I think the store is new so the cake is not really delicious. But I rate 5 stars and hope the shop can make more types of cakes. I will come back to try it! 😉

seems like people just buy the merch but not the bakes. very soft bread!

YunotakeAn is a spacious and tastefully arranged restaurant in Oita that offers a serene dining experience with beautiful garden views. The menu features delectable dishes such as black cow beef syeak zen, Sumibiyaki beeftekidon, and seafood options. Guests praise the delicious steak over rice and eel over rice, highlighting the quality ingredients and balanced flavors.
Wine list is good ! We were there for lunch- delicious unagi rice, pork roast skewers, tasty platter. Very nice ambience. Excellent hospitality by senior crew , young crew need more professionalism and politeness- but no flaws. Please check menu prices before you dine - dont dine then complain - simple

This restaurant appears overrated. Quality of food was average, taste was meh, and cost performance was poor. There were bones in almost all the pieces of carp sashimi. I have had carp sashimi without any bones in many other places. Fried soft-shelled turtle also had bones in the meat. One of the most disappointing meal of our visit to Fukuoka. Avoid if you can, and just eat street food. We enjoyed the street food in the area so much more than the food from this restaurant.

It's a very "Japanese Feels" restaurant. It's located inside a nice Japanese Zen Garden, just next to the famous lake. The food is good, I ordered their grill chicken lunch set. I'm quite satisfying with the taste, price, and service! Instead of queuing up long at those tourist hotspots restaurant, might as well having your lunch/dinner here with a breeze!

Was looking for something cheap or easy around , but only this high end restaurant open The eel don is good Interior pretty, other tourists kind loud Service is nice, explain everything like some menu already sold out Alchol alright, chicken tepanyaki some part really good some part kind of hard

This is probably the worst restaurant I experienced in JP. Bland food, sashimi is trout which tastes super weird. We requested to change the fish but they claim they have been in business for 60 years, so it MUST BE US that can’t appreciate their food. But honestly it’s just bad food, arrogant services, please avoid and save your money for any other restaurant around here.

Lovely calm oasis, so peaceful and you’re able to enjoy your spectacular food in serene surroundings. We tried all 3 lunch sets: chicken, beef and unagi. They were all good and unique in their own way.

Spacious and nicely decorated restaurant. You have to put your name down and they let you know when you should come back for your table. You can easily pass time walking around the shopping street. My advice is to go there first get an appointment, then you can walk around the shopping street. The waitresses are friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant is excellent. We had the steak rice and steak set with grill mushrooms. The steaks were fantastic and cooked to perfection, soft and juicy. One of the best I have had in Japan. The mushrooms were delicious and fresh. They only serve limited quantities everyday. Price is reasonable and quality is top notch!

A lovely restaurant that we popped in hopping for availability & thankfully there was! What a treat! Pricey for us but truly Oiishi! Delicious indeed! The Oita Wagyu Beef fillet was tender & tasty! The eel was just lovely! We balanced our meals with a salad to start with! Green tea was good! Thankful that they have an English menu to refer to! Very good for a special dinner!

Cafe Tenjosajiki

Cafe
Sabo Tenjo Sajiki is a charming café located about 20 minutes east of Yufuin station by car, on the second floor of Kamenoi besso near Lake Kinrin. Surrounded by a tranquil forest, it offers a relaxing atmosphere and a popular menu featuring treats like the Mon Yufu covered in cream and raisins, as well as the Angelica cream puff with banana cooked in local shochu.
A peaceful place that makes you forget that you are in busy Yufuin. Because there are not many seats compared to a large space, the waiting time may be longer than expected. Another big advantage is that restaurants near Kinlin Lake have separate parking spaces. We ordered basil pasta, pork sand, and beef stew as a set menu, but I think the set is better because it comes with a drink and salad. The most satisfying item was the pork sand, which was recommended by many people, and the basil pasta did not get good reviews, but it was rich in basil, so I was satisfied. Satisfaction with the most expensive beef stew was rather low. The beef stew came with two small buns, but it wasn't enough to eat as a meal, and it was unfortunate that you couldn't order additional bread. I chose cafe au lait as the drink in the set and it was delicious.
Sona — Google review
Nestled near the stunning Kinrin Lake, Cafe Tenjosajiki offers a serene escape with its tranquil atmosphere and delicious food. The star of the menu is undoubtedly their juicy pork cutlet sandwich, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and perfectly balanced with fresh ingredients. Paired with the peaceful surroundings, it’s an ideal spot to unwind and indulge in a moment of quiet bliss. One thing to note: the café is small with limited seating, so arriving early is highly recommended to secure a spot. Whether you're a food lover or simply seeking a calm retreat by the lake, Cafe Tenjosajiki is a must-visit in Yufuin.

Visited on a Monday morning, so it was quite empty. It's easy to miss the entrance. Take note that it's on the 2nd floor. Had the most incredible brunch here. Great service, charming atmosphere, and delicious food. The katsu sandwich in particular was quite mind blowing. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. Must visit at Yufuin.

4.5. Price is a bit on the steeper side but the view and atmosphere were top notch. The katsu sando was juicy. The toast set was great!! They got their bread from makinoya bakery and it was sooo soft and fluffy. Also did discounted coffee refill.

Very cozy and very relaxing cafe. Someone on the review saying that I can stay here as much as possible and I think so too. Japanese old house style. Lots of woods. On the other hand, sweets are not as good as I expected. I prefer more decorative sweets. But worth visiting definitely

A handsome coffee shop in fashionable Yufuin. We had coffee and Basque style cheesecake. They’re fine. I am curious to try a bottle of beer that cost 1900 yen. Just cheaper out due to its price. It is very nicely done.

Umi Jigoku, also known as Sea Hell, is one of the eight Beppu Hells in Japan. This geothermal pool was formed 1,200 years ago when Tsurumi Volcano erupted and is the largest hot spring among the group. The cobalt-blue water of Umi Jigoku looks magical and reaches temperatures around 98 degrees Celsius. Visitors can admire the vapors cloaking the pool while enjoying a footbath or visiting the nearby cafe.
🌟 A must-visit gem in Beppu! This spot is absolutely beautiful and worth adding to your itinerary. You don’t need to spend hours here—we explored everything in under an hour and still felt satisfied! We arrived around 4 PM after taking bus #5 from Beppu Station. The ticket was just ¥500, making it a quick, affordable, and memorable stop. Highly recommended!

The colour is very pretty! Has a large selection on their omiyage (gifts). I recommend going to this place. You get to see water lily garden, and the red hell. There's also greenhouse, but it's just very small section.

A short bus ride (20 mins, bus 41) from Beppu Station is Umi Jigoku hot springs. Too hot to swim and they describe it as “hell” as resembling what hell might be like. Lots of tourists and a good gift shop. Walk up to the Shrine and enjoy the green environment and ponds with water lillies.

Only this onsen is worth visiting in Beppu. The blue colour and steaming is stunning m. The place is well maintained and has a nice walking path around the pond. Honestly, the other hells are quite similar and not really worth the time, just go visit this one is enough.

Of the three jigoku that we saw this was my favourite. Two beautiful springs to view but more importantly the hot foot bath, which fixed my very sore feet. We paid at each venue, as three was enough for us. If you are only doing one this might be the best. No lines, went straight in.

🔥💧 Today I explored the famous 7 Hells of Beppu – each hot spring with its own unique color, steam, and character. From the bubbling blue sea hell to the steaming mud hell, it truly felt like stepping into another world. An unforgettable onsen adventure in Japan! 🇯🇵♨️

During our Fukuoka tour with Gogoday Travel, we visited Umi Jigoku as a backup stop and it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. The site is beautifully serene, featuring soothing blue hot springs that create a peaceful atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the tranquil foot bath, which was both relaxing and refreshing after a day of sightseeing. The area is well maintained and offers great photo opportunities. Helen, our guide, provided insightful information about the site, adding to the overall experience. Umi Jigoku is highly recommended as a calm and unique destination worth visiting.

Visiting Umi Jigoku is like stepping into a surreal, vibrant hot spring dreamland—perfect for anyone traveling through Beppu. Here’s what makes it unforgettable: • Striking Azure Waters: The onsen’s iconic cobalt-blue pools are truly mesmerizing. Their tranquil color and rising steam clouds transform the landscape into an otherworldly spectacle—like a portal to another realm. • Themed Attractions: Beyond just soaking in the sights, Umi Jigoku offers fascinating experiences: • A steaming mud bath, known for its soothing properties. • Pathways lined with colorful thermal ponds, each bubbling up its own steamy secrets. • A small but charming foot-onsen, where you can dip your feet in warm water while gazing at the scenery. • Pleasant Visitor Experience: The site is well-maintained with clean, informative signage. A café on-site serves refreshments and the infamous beaten egg boiled in onsen water, a quirky must-try when you’re here. • Cultural Insight: Umi Jigoku isn’t a bathing facility for everyday use—it’s one of Beppu’s renowned “Jigoku Meguri” (Hell Tour) destinations, a captivating cultural showcase that explores the amazing diversity of volcanic hot springs. • Convenient & Scenic: Easily accessible by car or public transport, it also features souvenir shops selling local treats and Beppu branding. The gardens nestled around the onsen ponds create picturesque spots for photography. ⸻ 🔖 Highlights: ✓ Iconic blue hot spring pools ✓ Mud bath experience ✓ Relaxing foot onsen ✓ On-site café and snacks ✓ Pro-grade photo opportunities ⸻ 🎯 Final Verdict: Umi Jigoku is more than just a hot spring—it’s an experience. Whether you’re into volcanic geology, serene landscapes, or quirky local culture, it’s impossible not to be captivated. Make sure it’s high on your Beppu “Hell Tour” list!

Chinoike Jigoku, also known as Blood Pond Hell, is a striking thermal pool with dark-red water naturally colored by iron oxide. It is part of the popular Hell Tour which includes visits to various other hells like Sea Hell, Oni Rock Monk Hell, White Pond Hell, and more. The tour ticket allows access to all these sites and offers the opportunity to try out hot foot baths.
The hell: very nice weird color. A little more on the orange side when we visited (mid-October), but still super nice. Highly recommend making this the last of the 7 hells that you visit, as the restaurant Gokurakutei is next door and you can end your visit with a nice hearty meal after a round of the hells. Chinoike’s footbath is also very nice and may have been the hottest among the 7 hells of Beppu!

Not too crowded. This hotspring is a bit further away from the rest. Need to have car or use public transportation. Not recommended for walking from other hotspring because its a slope road!

This and the Umi hell are my favourite. It also has one of the largest shopping area. Good to have it as your last stop to do all the shopping for hell that you want.

Fair warning, Chinoike Jigoku is pretty far from the rest of the hells, and the other hells also have red pools, so if you’re short on time I probably would skip the two over here and instead visit the other hells that are lumped together. But if you have too much time like me and like seeing stuff it’s a pretty cool red steaming pool! 😂👍

This was the last of the 7 sevens hills for our visit. It is a 2 min walk from another of the hells but a 10 min drive to the first 5. If you plan on visiting all 7 hells, get the book as it's 2400 instead of 500x7 if you pay individually. As for this hell, it is a beautiful red color hense the name bloody hell. There is a great gift shop and footbath as well

Tatsumaki Jigoku, also known as Tornado Hell, is a unique geyser located in Beppu. Unlike the other hells in the area, Tatsumaki Jigoku erupts at regular intervals of about 30-40 minutes and can reach an impressive height of 20 meters. Visitors can witness this natural phenomenon from a designated observation area and marvel at the powerful eruptions.
This stands out among the other 6 hells. A 30 mins wait at least for the next gyser eruption. I was lucky because I waited for 15 mins and it starts shooting. Great experience. Everything is natural, 104 degrees temperature of the water is not a joke
Willie L — Google review
It’s the geyser hot spring. I was lucky enough to visit during “showtime” (when the geyser is most active). And wow, the geyser really spits out a lot of hot pressured water! Unlike the other parks, this one doesn’t have a big hot spring. Only a small one surrounding the geyser. A commonly missed thing about the park is that there’s a garden path behind but most tourists would just gather around the geyser.
Daniel B — Google review
Tatsumaki Jigoku is perhaps the smallest of the Seven Hells of Beppu, however it stands out with it's geyser which regularly erupts every 30-40 minutes. There are benches and stone steps set out for people to sit and watch the eruption. There is also a sign next to the geyser explaining when it erupts and more information about it. Tatsumaki Jigoku also has a gift shop, and outside the premises is a toilet block. It was cool to see the geyser erupting, but it was quite a way to get to Tatsumaki Jigoku. I would recommend to anyone that you get the bus or drive to this Hell if you're looking to complete the Hells tour. There's also not a lot to do at this Hell specifically.
James H — Google review
Shaded seating available. Got lucky and arrived while the geyser was active. according to signboards, the geyser remains active for 6-10min, then goes dormant for 30-40 minutes before becoming active again - it could have been a long wait. I think the geyser would have been more spectacular if it had been allowed to reach its natural height of ~30m as explained, instead of being covered within a 2-3m structure.
Xiao X — Google review
Note: There are certain times it erupts so take some time if you're not sure when. We were just lucky to get there on time but we were in a rush. Nice to look at for a while. Would recommend getting the ticket for all 7 hells as you would save money on it.
Aud S — Google review
This is the most interesting in the sense that it is erupting. Also, as it only erupts every 30-40 mins, if you are unlucky, you might have to wait a while. We were lucky and reached there when it was erupting and the staff did not even took tickets from us and just hurried us to go in and view. So nice and trusting!
E K — Google review
Pretty cool if you want to a geyser, the hot spring is pretty small but it seems that the geyser is active at pretty reliable times so you’re quite sure to see it spew! Pretty far away from the rest of the hells so not recommended if you’re short on time.
Helena W — Google review
Functioning geyser contained in an artificial rock wall for safety. Worth seeing once. May have to wait up to 30 minutes for a 10-minute eruption. Part of the Seven Hells of Beppu so should be seen to complete the set.

Good sized park with plenty of fun winding trails with different landscapes that evolve with the seasons. Good place for walkers and runners that have both steady and alternating slopes depending on the trail you take. One of my favorite sections is the mini bamboo forest. It is nice and tall and is thoughtfully landscaped with intentional maple trees placed in between. Well worth a visit if you're in Beppu!

I went last Saturday, it was farmers market too on that day. Tbh it was crowded but the place is nice. You can hangout, do picnics. Or do exercise too ig. A interesting fact is there was military base, but it's impossible to say it now that it used to be a military base. This place is hella pretty on Sakura.

Peace and tranquility in the middle of the city. The park was far better than what I had anticipated. There were many walking trails throughout the park including a restroom. Despite a hot sunny humid day, it actually felt pretty cool walking in the park due to all the shade. The backdrop of the mountains was just beautiful as well. There were many vistas such as the bamboo forest and pine trees. Definitely worth a visit while in Beppu.

Yufuin Kinsho Croquettes is a popular spot located at Yunotsubokaido street, known for winning the gold award at an NHK croquette competition. The place often gets media attention and has long lines due to its fame. Their signature dish, the Kinsho croquette, is highly recommended. The meat and potato croquette is described as absolutely delicious, while the vegetable one lacks a bit of flavor. The curry croquette also receives high praise.
Crab Cream Croquette (¥200) A famous, budget-friendly delight! Served hot, its creamy, luscious filling contrasts perfectly with the crispy golden exterior. Beware of the molten filling—it’s a fiery yet pleasurable bite! 🦀✨

They have one specific croquette on the menu that they won an award for. However, my partner and I ordered 3 different types of croquette to try and both our favourites were the two that did not win an award. Overall, the croquettes were not bad. I enjoyed the crab cream croquette which is not a usual flavor that I see!
Annie C — Google review
Yufuin Kinsho Croquettes came recommended by our tour guide, and while the initial long queues suggested a must-try, we returned later when it was quiet to sample the beef croquettes. They were fresh and hot, but a little too sweet for our taste and somewhat soggy. That said, there’s a wide variety of flavors available, which might appeal to different palates.
Karen G — Google review
This is one of the popular food stores here selling freshly fried croquettes. It was served hot and crispy and did not tasted very oily at all; yet still could you a bit thirsty afterall. If the waiting line is huge, just go to some other shops and come back. I would not say it tastes that delicious to worth waiting for a long time.

The beef croquette sells out quite fast. Tried the gold medal croquette that’s made of beef, potato and onions. Quite decent and ¥200 is a very reasonable price. There’s another brunch of this stall along the main walking street. Even if there is a queue it moves quite quickly.

I am so sad I didn't have enough space in my stomach. The chicken was amazing, but I was pretty full when I went there after eating street food. Next time if I visit Yuhuin, I am going to come to this restaurant straight and eat food well! I am sorry to leave a lot of food when I visited.

The seasoning wasn't too strong, which I really liked! The place is small, so I recommend arriving before it opens to wait. If you don't get in right after it opens, you'll likely have to wait for quite a while.

Japanese regional restaurant
Yufumabushi Shin is a popular restaurant in Yufuin known for its classic regional dishes. The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows and often has long lines, especially during lunch hours. They serve only three types of food: rice topped with chicken, unagi, or Bungo beef in ceramic clay pots.
Although there was a long queue, the staff placed a lot of chairs for customers to wait in comfort. The appetisers are alright, but the highlight was the main dish. Ordered the beef claypot bowl and the meat was tender. The claypot was deep, so there was actually quite a lot of rice. There were different condiments and clear broth given which you can experiment with, I love adding the spicy paste as it gives it added kick. Highly recommend this place!

It was an interesting experience but was it worth the wait? Probably not, other than to dine at a well established eatery. We waited for about 35 minutes - you first queue in a line outside along the road before moving on to a row of seats just outside the eatery. A short while later, your table should be ready. They have three main sets - chicken, beef and unagi (eel) - for around 3000 yen each, which come with a variety of appetisers like pickles and vegetables, as well as a bowl of delish miso soup with tasty small mushrooms, I found the unagi to be tasty, but the portion was small. The beef was better in size and taste. The rice is in a claypot style and if you leave it in for a short while, the rice crisps up nicely. You can also add dashi stock to the rice near the end, to have a different flavour and texture.

We visited around 4 PM and there was no queue at the time. However, we had a bit of an odd experience—one of our family members went to the restroom nearby, and the staff didn’t allow the rest of us to be seated until everyone in our group was present. We had to wait outside until we were all together before they would let us sit. Just something to keep in mind if you’re planning to visit with a group. 🍲As for the food, the menu is very limited with only 3 options available. We tried the beef rice and the unagi rice. Both were delicious and came in generous portions. A nice touch is the TV screen showing how to enjoy the meal—at the end, you can pour soup over the rice to turn it into a comforting bowl of ochazuke (boiled rice) 💴the restaurant only accepts cash, so make sure to bring some with you. 🚗For parking, we used a paid parking lot nearby, but we’re not sure if there’s any free parking available in the area.
V P — Google review
There were only 3 options for choosing. Chicken, beef and eel. And the food was just okay and totally not worthy for the high price. 3200+ yen for just a bento rice with some side dishes. The mid age woman at the reception needs to improve her attitude to customers and be more flexible. I was with my dad who has difficulty in walking. And she kept on asking my dad to stand up from the chair and move whenever the line moved. I told her he has bad knees and can he just sit on the same chair instead of keep moving whenever there is customers going inside. She just ignored and insisted that he should move. Sometimes these people really need to learn to be more flexible and be more considerate to others instead of sticking to their "rules". Also, strictly no sharing, if you have party of 5. You have to order 5 sets.
Henry Y — Google review
This might be far inferior than Hong Kong’s clay pot rice. It doesn’t even have charred rice at the bottom or around the pot but they still supply you with water to soak the charred part of rice. Substandard! Rice is local Japanese rice which in my opinion is not optimal for such clay pot rice. Beef is satisfactory. Chicken is better than beef but the small chunk size decreases satisfaction. The appetizer is local I think but not delicious. Crowded and noisy, especially those tourists who cannot control themselves. In addition, smoke coming out of their kitchen is a nuisance to those queuing and residential neighbors. Why no environmental inspection? Once is enough.
Sunny S — Google review
There is no reservation system so we lined up outside soon after the shop was opened, and the queue has never stopped ever since. We ordered one of its most famous rice bowls featuring beef and eel, and a roasted chicken on top just to have a more rounded overview of how different meat was cooked. For each of the bowls there are 3 ways to enjoy including having it as original, adding side dishes to mix together and adding soup. Everything was well plated and simple instructions are shown on the TV. Portions are decent. Staff with high efficiency it did not take long to be served after ordering.

One of the famous cuisines here is the Kamameshi (釜飯) and no one does it better than restaurant 由布まぶし心. You could smell the smoke from charcoal fire that was raging inside the kitchen to prepare for those delicious Kamameshi dish that is traditionally cooked in an iron or clay pot consist of rice seasoned with condiments like soy sauce or mirin, and cooked with meats with 3 selections to choose from: Chicken, Eel or their specialty – Oita wagyu beef. You could enjoy the Kamameshi dish in 3 ways, first eat it as is to enjoy the original flavor, second to consume it with the varieties of seasoning and sauces provided by the restaurant to enhance the flavor to your liking. Lastly place the soup into the remaining rice to enjoy a bowl of soup rice, 湯漬け(ゆづけ). A very hearty and enjoyable meal that also allowed me to learn more about the Japanese culture, money well spent! NOTE: Only Cash is accepted here – Remember to bring enough of it so it will not ruin your experience.

ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa by IHG

Hotel

Wedding venue
Nestled in Beppu, the ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa offers a seamless blend of local charm and international allure. The hotel boasts an array of luxurious amenities including onsen, private baths, saunas, beauty salons, and infinity pools. Guests can also partake in activities like yoga and pilates.
This is a beautiful property perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the Beppu city landscape. Service was the stuff of legends, as the team took excellent care of us and met all our needs swiftly and precisely. On arrival, the concierge will provide valet service for your car. When you want to leave the hotel, it takes only a few minutes for the valet to drive your car over to the lobby. The rooms were modern and adorned with Japanese inspired design elements. The sleeping area had two queen-sized beds instead of a single King-sized bed. Apparently, this is quite common in Japan. Staff across the entire hotel were friendly, polite, welcoming, attentive and detailed-oriented. They even scheduled the housekeeping service to specific timings according to our preferences. The only issue we had was the restaurants are all closed by 10pm, and only a limited menu of various onigiris are available at the bar and for in-room dining. Overall, it was a pleasant and enjoyable stay.

The ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa gave me the most unforgettable memories of my entire journey through Japan. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by a view so breathtaking it felt almost unreal — the city and surrounding landscape unfolding far below like a living painting. The hotel’s design is a masterpiece in itself, where every line, texture, and detail has been meticulously curated to create an atmosphere of serene elegance. The spa is nothing short of extraordinary — the most beautiful I have ever experienced in Japan. The staff embody warmth and professionalism, elevating every interaction into something memorable. Breakfasts here are an indulgence to savor, and each meal is a flawless blend of flavor, artistry, and freshness. This is not simply a place to stay — it is an experience that lingers in your heart long after you leave. I will undoubtedly return.

Room: Clean, spacious, and comes with a private onsen. The suite includes a free minibar with all kinds of alcohol, even generous Regent selections. Service: All staff can speak English and are very friendly. The service is quick, and what surprised me most is that they even offer fruit cutting service. Location: Very close to Umi Jigoku, which is convenient for sightseeing. Transportation: The hotel provides pickup and drop-off service. You just need to email them to confirm. Since the car only has four seats, if there aren’t enough seats, they’ll arrange a taxi instead and cover the cost. Their onsen is excellent, with a beautiful night view of Beppu. I recommend going before dinner, around 6 to 7 pm, when it’s quiet and sometimes you can have the whole place to yourself.

I stayed here about four months ago, and I still find myself thinking back to that incredible experience. The onsen was absolutely world-class—the view from the outdoor bath alone was worth the trip. It was peaceful, luxurious, and truly unforgettable. Room service was another highlight: not only was the pricing surprisingly reasonable for a hotel of this level, but the food was genuinely delicious and exceeded expectations. What stood out the most, however, was the staff. Every single person we encountered was kind, professional, and attentive. I especially want to thank an employee named Lee—I was struggling with Japanese, but he kindly approached me in Korean, helped me right away, and even remembered my name throughout my stay. That small gesture meant so much to me and made me feel truly welcome. I can’t wait to return. In fact, thanks to this amazing stay, I’ve even signed up for the InterContinental membership. Highly, highly recommended.

One of the best intercontinentals in Japan! Amenities and services are top tier. Staff are all caring and helpful. Thanks for making our Bepou trip great! Onsen has great views and doesn’t smell like sulfur. The only thing I think the hotel can improve is food. Breakfast has very limited choice. Club lounge has some extra choices for breakfast but after we stayed here for 4 days it kinda ran out of options. Afternoon tea and night cocktail at lounge were not impressive either. Hopefully the hotel can improve the food section then it will be a perfect resort in Beppu! We look forward to coming back again.

We had an absolutely amazing stay at ANA InterContinental Beppu! From the moment we booked, the hotel went above and beyond—reaching out before our arrival to arrange a pickup at Beppu Station, which made our journey seamless. The staff were incredibly warm, welcoming, and always ready to help. We stayed in a room with an onsen right in our room, and it was pure bliss! Every detail felt thoughtful and luxurious. Exploring Beppu was made even easier thanks to the staff, who kindly arranged taxis for us when our Uber app didn’t work (and when we struggled to pronounce some locations!). Their kindness and attentiveness truly stood out. The hotel features two beautiful hot springs that alternate between male and female guests daily, allowing for a fresh experience each day. Breakfast was included with our stay, and the selection was fantastic—freshly made omelets, great coffee, and a wide variety of delicious options. We also dined at Atelier, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, and the fixed menu was simply phenomenal. Every course was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Overall, this stay was unforgettable, and we can’t wait to return. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Beppu!

Yamada, her service at the lounge was nothing short of exceptional. An incredibly attractive and meticulous approach that truly stands out. Not only was careful in every detail, but she also had the perfect balance; thoughtful and sweet without being overbearing. Her care made my experience exceptional, and I genuinely enjoyed every moment because of it. Truly impressive!

I recently stayed at ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa and had an absolutely wonderful experience. From the moment I checked in, the service was warm, attentive, and genuine. Although there was no twin suite available on my first night, the staff kindly helped arrange an upgrade for my extended stay. The communication was smooth and thoughtful, which made me feel very welcomed and well taken care of. The resort itself is stunning — beautifully designed, tranquil, and offers breathtaking views of Beppu. What really stood out to me, however, was the level of personalized service. One evening when I needed a ride and couldn’t find a taxi outside no bus, the hotel staff quickly assisted me in securing transportation. Small moments like this truly reflect the team’s dedication and care. I’m also grateful for the housekeeping team, who not only kept the room spotless throughout my stay, but even helped return a forgotten item after I checked out — promptly and with great care. Thank you to everyone at ANA InterContinental Beppu for making this stay so special. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

Nice private onsen, 3000¥ or 30AUD for an hour in the pool. The pool is empty when you arrive and you put a coin in the vending machine to make the hot water flow! The little steam room is also very cute. There is a free public foot bath outside. We also ate lunch before we went. I got a butter chicken curry for 1400¥.

Oh it was crazy good. Men had 9 different baths. 3 indoors and 1 outdoor. Sand bath was great fell asleep. Waterfall was good massage. The cold dip was great to cool down and start another round of dipping quickly. Price was totally reasonable for how long I spend there. Totally worth the 3 stars Michelin rating.

Amazing onsen experience – a must-visit in Beppu! Hyotan Onsen is one of the best hot spring experiences I’ve had in Beppu. The place is clean, well-maintained, and offers a wide variety of baths including sand baths, steam rooms, and open-air rotenburo. The water quality is excellent and you can really feel the minerals working on your skin. I wanted to go for the private baths—But it's fully booking it's recommend to book the private onsen in advance. There’s even a place to enjoy steamed food cooked with onsen heat, which was delicious. It’s easy to access and very welcoming for both locals and tourists. Don’t miss it if you’re visiting Beppu :)

We came here while on a visit to the Hells of Beppu. We had wanted one of the outdoor private onsens, but it was still raining heavily. So we booked an hour in one of the indoor ones. The place was okay, but there was mold along the top of the room. The water was warm enough. However, the experience paled compared to the ryokan onsen experience we had the day before in Yifuin. Also, your hour starts immediately after you hand your payment over, including the time you need to take to walk to the next building in the pouring rain. They need to streamline the process. When you enter the reception area, you need to take off your shoes to walk a few metres to the desk. After collecting your key, you then have to put your footwear back on to go to the room. The same process is repeated when you return the key. Perhaps they should have a rubber pad for customers to walk to the desk and back to the entrance without taking off shoes.

A good experience with many bathing options. You can also book a private bath where you are charged hourly. Be sure to book in advance if you are after the private baths.

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of marine life at Oita Marine Palace Aquarium "Umitamago". This bayside park offers captivating dolphin and walrus shows, as well as interactive programs that allow visitors to get up close with these fascinating sea creatures. The highlight of the aquarium is a massive 1,250-ton circular water tank showcasing 90 different species of fish native to the nearby Bungo Channel.
Umitamago was a fantastic aquarium experience! Visited on a weekday afternoon in January. We were absolutely mesmerized by the jellyfish exhibit and loved watching the walrus 🖤. The aquarium was well-laid and easy to navigate. We appreciated how clean and well-maintained the facility was. There's also the souvenir shop, cafe, touching fish area, gacha area, also the show area where we can watch the performance of dolphins, sea lions, walrus. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend for families with young children!

Absolutely miserable place. Animals in tiny spaces. Seals swimming in circles for ages at a time because they're going crazy being locked up in small pools. One seal was constantly building up speed and jumping out to nearly smash into the window. Do NOT go here, it's a horrible experience. I nearly cried. Poor animals

This setup provides great flexibility and allows visitors to tailor their experience to their needs and budget, making the park accessible and enjoyable for all!

The kids (15 & 13) had so much fun in the park. Quite a variety of rides with a few ones that were pretty wild. They convinced me to go on the wooden roller coaster called Jupiter and it was crazy fast with so many twists and turns I think I need a chiropractor after that. They loved it, I just couldn’t wait for it to be over. Only downside is that it’s a bit expensive. We went to the hells of Beppu in the morning so only had part of the afternoon there and it was $5,500 per person. No discount for later arrival.

Spent the whole day with my 8 year old and 10 year old, and still haven't had enough. Suitable for kids from elementary school and onwards: laser maze, VR rides, horror house, various types of roller coasters, pirate ship, pendulum rides, ferris wheel, carousel, drop towers, indoor obstacle course... full day pass highly recommended!

An almost abandoned fun land that still feels welcoming and charming. Feels very local but has an international appeal, as it is home to one of the largest wooden coasters in the world. It’s a family place and well worth the visit for an authentic Japan experience.

Worth to spend your day here : I went on a Thursday and it was empty. The rides are equivalent standards to the more populated ones like Disney or Universal Studios but without the crowd. No queue for all the rides we wanted to do- we did 20 rides altogether in the 5 hrs we were there versus ~5 if lucky if at the crowded ones at Tokyo or Osaka . Cost only 1/3 ~1/2 the cost . Time and money well spend

This park is not that bad in general, lots of the activities there are really enjoyable. Theres not much people there if its not in the weekends too. Most of the staff looks happy doing there jobs, but not all of them. So heres my advice: 1. Buy the activity pass. This pass allows you to ride and play most of the activities. (Not all but most of the activities.) You can repeat most of the activities too, so its rlly nice in general. 2. Repeat lots of the activities you like. This park doesnt have lots of variety of activities, so maybe try as much as activities first and repeat the activities you liked the most. 3. Jupiter (the tree roller coaster) This really hurt my back and my neck, and i expected more from this. The seating of this roller coaster is horrible. The shaking is unfortunately really bad, and i thought i was going to pass out. Overall a horrible experience.

Experience is never-ending, this place is foreign-tourist friendly (based on my experience), some staff able to explain how to play in english. Heartwarming, good food, affordable free pass. If I have any chance I would like to go again. The most memorable ride was the wooden rollercoaster jupiter and the newton drop 🎢

Cake shop
Donut shop
B-speak, located at the Beppu Bay Service Station in Japan, is a popular spot known for its legendary Swiss roll. The store uses only four ingredients to make their butter and offers a not-too-sweet cream. Visitors rave about the unbelievably soft sponge and delicious whipped cream that melts in your mouth. It's recommended to arrive early or even call ahead to reserve as they tend to sell out quickly.
Definitely worth the hype. Apart from the croquettes that are a must-eat when visiting here in Yufuin, this is surely the other must-eat item! A swiss roll like no other! Super yummy - it's soft, taste is just right, not overly sweet, and most importantly, not the least bit too rich at all! It tends to finish early so be sure to be fairly early to catch it in the first half of the day. If driving and coming by for takeaways, parking is across the street down a narrow, almost hidden lane. But signs are there ro direct.

Everyone recommended the swiss roll cake from this shop, but they only sell it as a whole and not sliced. Too bad - probably next time.

Went at 3pm and they had a whole role available. Ate it at 8pm in our room and the three of us INHALED it, it was the best roll cake of our lives. So soft and fluffy and not very sweet. We will be thinking of this cake for a long time…
G C — Google review
Came back after almost 10 years still want to try the roll again. As expected, original flavor roll is soft and bouncy. Cream in between is the central theme. They can maintain the quality in all these years. However, as customers bought these ‘not cheapo’ confectionery, giving complimentary one set of fork and knife is basic, however, they have to charge them extra. This makes experience looks incomplete. See if they reconsider giving complimentary fork and knives on demand.

They are known for the B-speak soft and fluffy roll which is supposed to be soft and has a rich taste, the fresh cream filling. It's almost too beautiful to eat, especially with the packaging. They also offer cheesecake. In the same shop they sells Theomurata chocolates in various flavors, and the tea room offering of fruit and chocolate ice cream looks so good in the poster photo. It's not cheap but so elegant even the shop setting and decor.

You will hit B-speak on your way into the main shopping street. When we got there before the first Mori train arrived, stocks were aplenty. When we returned around 4pm, the plain rolls were sold out by then. Yes, they only sell by the roll but you can get the smaller slices onboard Mori and while stocks last.

Amazing egg roll. Must-try in my opinion. The cream was creamy yet light, while the cake was fluffy, soft, and eggy. Balance between cake and cream was also perfect. We got the original flavour. Ordering strategy is to get there early and then order first. Then pickup from the store when you are done exploring the area. We got to the store at around 1130am. You might be able to call and reserve a day before, but not sure. Will sell out if you go to the store too late. Would come and buy again for sure.

the BIG hype of the B-speak soft and fluffy P-roll, let's try ! YES, the rich taste (chocolate roll), the softness, and the fresh cream are all excellent quality (arguably, the best). the ice pack is handy and allows us to roam around with the roll for few hours before we return to the resort. we ate the first half on the same day, which was very good; then we finished the second half the next day, which was still good+ ! wish they have more outlets and we could get the roll as easy !

Hamburger restaurant
Yufuin Burger House is a must-visit spot in Japan, offering a unique fusion of Western and Japanese flavors. Despite the slightly longer wait time, the delicious burgers make it worth it. The owner's dedication to cooking and the combination of fresh ingredients create an unforgettable dining experience. The cozy indoor seating adds to the charm of this burger joint, making it a top choice for burger enthusiasts visiting Japan.
We had the pleasure of trying two of the restaurant’s most popular burgers—the Yufuin Burger and the Teriyaki Egg Burger. These are ranked #1 and #2 on the menu for a reason. The owner was very friendly and mentioned that it might take a little longer to prepare, but honestly, the wait was absolutely worth it. Even as someone who’s not typically a huge fan of burgers, both were expertly crafted and made to perfection. Both were so delicious. We left feeling totally satisfied and couldn’t recommend these burgers enough! We really loved it!

I think the owner cooks and serves the food himself, and he is very kind. The burgers are delicious and the special one is double portions, so the portions are huge. There is no combo menu, so there are no French fries or so and you have to order a drink separately. The burgers can be a little greasy, so I recommend getting some soft ice cream at the ice cream shop right next door, which is run by the same owner. Parking is available for one car and up to three motorcycles.
Jasper ( — Google review
The burger was freshly made, and despite the limited options available, the quality of the wagyu sliced meat—not minced—combined with fresh lettuce and tomato, truly elevated its flavor.
Tom L — Google review
This is probably one of the tastiest burgers I have had in my life! The owner was very kind enough to accommodate my requests (to remove the tomato and egg because I don’t eat them lol). The cafe is also such a huge vibe. If you’re an old soul, don’t miss out on this!

The Mog Champ sends his regards. I remember enjoying my lunch here during a rainy day in Yufuin! The place attracted me since it didn't look like your average burger restaurant! When I ordered my burger and sat inside, it felt very cozy! I got their signature burger and it was amazing, perhaps the best burger I've had during my whole trip! The inside was a bit small but it showed what the owner vibes with which was pretty cool! Thank you for the food and experience here Yufuin Burger House! I hope many other customers can enjoy a burger here as well! Mogliest Regards, Your Mog Champ

Yufuin Burger House. Orders are taken on the spot, and the average wait time is roughly 30 minutes. The owner may not be very welcoming, but the burger is delicious. The combination of ingredients, as well as the owner’s devotion to his cooking, make this a must-try. Due to the slightly thinner patty, it is ranked slightly lower than Bayside Burger in Incheon, but extremely near to the best I have eaten so far.
Eric Y — Google review
Highly recommended! This guy knows how to make an amazing burger. It was just the right amount of all the different ingredients to give the burger a great taste. Even the size selection was great. You can choose between large and extra large. And were most people go wrong when making a big burger, this guy does not mess up. Instead of just making a tall burger that's impossible to eat, he actually just makes it wider, just the way it is supposed to be done!
Tore G — Google review
Possibly the best burger I had in Japan. Reasonably priced and good portions. The burger took some time to cook but was 100 percent worth it. You can enjoy a great view of Mount Yufu.

Yakiniku restaurant
Barbecue restaurant
Wasak is a highly recommended yakiniku restaurant in Yufuin known for its friendly and helpful service. The staff, many of whom speak fluent English, provide great suggestions on the menu. The premium wagyu meat platter and the high-quality Oita beef are particularly popular choices. Diners also praise the refreshing radish salad with plum dressing and the local beer served at Wasak. The restaurant offers yakiniku tables where guests can grill their own food, adding to the overall experience.
We made a reservation at the Wasaku. We where very lucky that we got a table. So we ordered a set and some other meat because we wanted to try also other meat. The quality of the meat was great. And also that you can barbecue it by yourself. The services was excellent and all of the staff can speak really good English. So we had a great time here. Make a reservation and enjoy a greater evening.

We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant! The food was absolutely fantastic, the atmosphere was great, and the staff were so nice. They even helped me remove a bbq stain off my white T-shirt! We really recommend this place!

Visited for dinner and was impressed by the variety on the menu. The shrimp , shell were fresh, and the BBQ was delicious. The restaurant has a cozy ambiance perfect for both casual meals and special occasions. Staff was professional and accommodating. Will definitely be back to try more dishes

Afraid that maybe hard to find a restaurant for dinner during the cherry blossom season, I made a reservation at least a month before. Appreciate for the excellent service, they would keep checking if the customers ask for any assistance. The food is tasty and price reasonable for this tourist spot. I spent around JPY11000 to order two beef sets for two persons.

The beef and sauces here were absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the Boss Set and 2 different individual serves of beef. The premium wagyu had an unbelievable marble. The tenderness and flavour were amazing.
Rochelle W — Google review
The food was delicious and the people were very friendly! Most of the staff spoke fluent English and the owner was extremely helpful. The beef was melt in your mouth delicious and super high quality. The local beer was also really good. We will be back!

Friendly helpful service with great suggestions. We went for the premium wagyu meat platter (with 3 types - 3 pieces each) and took the recommendation from the waitor and got a plate of the premium beef (cant remember what its called but it was the second most expensive one). The radish salad with plum dressing was very refreshing. Highly recommend this place. Bonus: There was a friendly cat at the car park who sent us off

Day 4

Off the beaten path
For day 4, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Kyushu Wildlife Park African Safari. Not quite as popular as Yufuincho Kawakami, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari, located between Beppu and Yufuin, offers a thrilling safari experience where visitors can drive through the vast park in secure jungle buses to see exotic animals like lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants, and more up close. The park also features interactive zones where guests can touch kangaroos and ride horses.
Visiting the Kyushu Wildlife Park African Safari was an absolutely thrilling experience! The drive-through safari allowed us to see majestic lions, elephants, giraffes, and more, up close from our car that it felt like a real African adventure! The highlight was the caged bus tour where we got to feed the lions, elephants, deer and more. It was an exhilarating and rare opportunity, especially for kids! But the surprises didn’t end there. The park’s interactive zone let us get up close with friendly horses, fluffy rabbits, and tiny hamsters. Those are definitely my kids’ favorite. The animals looked well-cared for, and the park was clean and well-organized. Totally worth it for families and animal lovers.
Sorlo S — Google review
Amazing safari experience! We usually steer clear of such attractions, but here the animals looked relaxed and well-kept. Driving the full route in our own car was more than enough, so the feeding bus felt unnecessary (we even got a refund). Our kids (10 and 8 yo) loved it.
Boaz G — Google review
Wow wow wow! You can get really up close to the animals while being in the comfort of your car and at your own pace. Animals are well taken care of and there is ample space for them. Such an environment is more natural than being in zoos. Saw a lot of animals with their cubs and calves. 🥰 We spent about 2 hours including the safari and a smaller section where you can feed miniature horses, kangaroos and pet guinea pigs. This place closes at 4pm so I would suggest arriving before 2pm.
Susan K — Google review
Very exciting, went with my kid. Advice is to arrive early to lineup for the official jungle bus. I arrive at 9 and got the jungle bus spot at noon. It’s a very unique experience.
Stephen C — Google review
Amazing experience and highly recommended! You can either take the park's Safari bus, or drive your own car into the enclosures and see the animals up close. There are lions, bears, giraffes and many other kinds of animals. The Safari bus is very popular, so you will need to arrive early to get a seat. You can get to feed the animals on the safari bus. Otherwise, just drive through in your own vehicle, which is just as fun and you can move along at your own pace. A must to visit for all visitors to Fukuoka/Beppu/Kyushu!
Cheong N — Google review
As part of our Day Tour trip, we arrived at the Wildlife Park in a Tour Bus. It was a exciting experience driving-through the park in our Bus allowing us to move around in the Bus seeing and taking photos of the animals. A stop-over at the Park’s interactive zone with rabbits and hamster added to the fun of the trip.
James W — Google review
Park opens at 9am. Queue outside the park with cars starts earlier. Self-drive starts at 9:30am. Drive up close to the animals present. Saw the giraffe, elephant, lion, tiger, cheetah, zebra, deer, etc. After the drive, do consider heading to the miniature horses (which you can feed by buying carrots for a fee using tongs), the cat saloon (entry for adults 500 yen, children below 4 free) or the dog saloon (entry 500 yen, children below 4 not allowed).
Tracy Y — Google review
What an amazing experience. We rented a car and drive up from Beppu to experience this African safari. Everyone has to pay for an admission ticket. You can either drive your own car or pay for a bus ticket and take one of the animal buses. We choose to drive our own car and it was so cool to get up and close with the animals. You also get to go through as many times as you like. You’re not limited to one drive through so you can experience the safari at different times and from different perspectives.

Specialty Museums
The Yufuin Showa Museum is a retro-themed tourist attraction in Japan that offers interactive exhibits, recreating the atmosphere of 1950s and '60s Japan. Visitors can explore houses, shops, cinemas, schools, and other places as they might have looked back then. The museum also features activities such as playing old famicom games or trying out rifles like in fairs. Furthermore, there is a gift shop and confectionery store where one can purchase Japanese old-time candy.
From the outside it does not look very exciting but it is actually a very nice museum. You have multiple scenes from the showa era (house, shops, streets…) with many interesting objects. You can also do some funny activities for free like pachinko, old arcade games, billard, take pictures with costumes… A great experience ! It was 1400 yens for an adult but I think it worths the price ! I visited on Friday and it was not crowded. I recommend 2 hours to not be rushed.

A nice museum to visit and relive some of the yesteryear's memory. They have many items that even non Japanese is able to relate to..speaks much of the Japanese products that were available internationally. We had fun taking photos and playing some of the game machines that were available for us to try 😁

Its bigger than i thought and its lovely to see i felt like i get back to 50’s 😍😍 dont miss it
Rahaf M — Google review
I highly recommend this awesome little museum. Based in Japan during its Showa era ( named after the Emperor's reign) which was actually 1926-1989, though I'd say this has a focus on the 50s-80s. I thought this would be more gimmicky, but it is really well made. Every room is a theme and they're packed with items from that era. Some of them include : game arcade, pachinko, movie theatre , hair salon, 50s/60s style homes. It's even interactive, with a working game arcade, working vintage pachinko machines, and working cork-gun ( shown in video ). There's no foreign language signage, and given this is a living museum, I like that. I wish they had a map in English or even an audio tour, but even without you can just enjoy the experience of being ( depending on your age) transported back to Japan in a period that was perhaps your childhood, or a time you've only seen in the movies. Regarding movies, they have a replica cinema with movies playing , followed by an arcade where you can play original Pacman, Donkey Kong, Super Mario etc .
Nathan F — Google review
I did not pay to get insde the museum but it looks like a vivid one with all the vintage posters and decorations. A gift shop is available near the exit where you could get some toys and old Japanese sweet snacks. I imagine they must bring back some precious memories for some people.

Bakery
Cafe La Ruche is a stylish bakery and cafe with stunning views of Kinrin Lake. It offers a variety of delicious breads, light fare, and substantial dishes like their renowned burger and cinnamon toasts. While some visitors found the food to be underwhelming, others appreciated the decent coffee and tasty baked goods. The highlight of this place is its picturesque setting by the lake, providing a peaceful ambiance for enjoying breakfast or coffee.
Although the main catch seem to be the view, we found the food quite appetising. The mushroom bacon sandwich was lovely. The plain croissant and almond croissant were perfectly done. The only pity was I only found the toaster for “re-bake” after we have finished half of them. The sausage sandwich didn’t look very promising but the combination of that ?sourdough baguette and strange sausage went surprisingly well. The cheese cake was so yummy that our little boy begged for the second helping. Coffee was so so.
Liwei C — Google review
Enjoyed our lunch with a superb view of the lakw. All the food including the cheese cake, the soup and the sandwiches were delicious.
Susan K — Google review
Sensing my mum's exhaustion and hunger after finally making our way to Kinrin Lake, we decided to rest here and fuel up. Got some food and then have her rest while I circle the lake for photos. The mushroom tartine has a nice sourdough base and bits of bacon and loads of mushroom on it. Loved the bread so much I bought the bread sticks by the cashier for snacking.
Alvin L — Google review
I dropped by here to have a coffee while enjoying the view. The location of this cafe is good, overlooking Kinrin Lake. Their coffee was not the best but still good on a cold winter's day. Not sure if this was the only toilet stop in the area, but lots of people were queueing for the washrooms, and it was quite dirty after being used by so many tourists. I would recommend coming here in the morning instead, which will not be so crowded.
狐鸣 — Google review
It was a rainy Friday morning so there were barely any people in the café. The views were amazing but we were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. All the bread seemed freshly baked and the drinks were amazing. Would recommend!
Michelle M — Google review
Cafe with a beautiful unblock view of Lake Kinrin. Ordered Cafe latte & ice cafe mocha. Great break after walk around lake.
Pauline N — Google review
Honestly I think the food here was a little bit of a let down for us. We weren’t too thrilled with the things that we ordered - have had better elsewhere. The coffee was decent though and the baked goods were alright. What makes this place outstanding is the view and the atmosphere. The restaurant is tidy and clean - and the lake is just always a beautiful site. Seating is usually no problem as well, we managed to find seating for 5 and a place for a stroller quite easily. Even though you may not be here for the food - grab a drink and sit by the lake, it’s worth a visit in itself.

Bodies of Water
Nestled on a mountaintop at an elevation of 600 meters, Shidaka Lake has become a sought-after destination in recent years. The picturesque setting, surrounded by mountains and offering ever-changing seasonal scenery, from cherry blossoms to lush greenery and autumn foliage, makes it a unique camping spot. Visitors can bask in the tranquility of the lake's reflective surface under the open sky during the day and marvel at the starry night sky.
Nice lake with lots of roaming/picnic spaces. There are camping sites surrounding the lakes too. We paddled the boat in the lake and the swans and kois surrounded us. It was a nice experience and the view from the lake to the mountain was exquisite. The boat ride was 1000 yen and the car park was free. There's also a fish food dispenser near the "jetty" at 100 yen.
Jeffrey Y — Google review
The lake is beautiful, and it has a large amount of coy fish and swans. They have a feeding area for the animals, if you pay 100yen you can get food for them. They also have paddle boats and good restrooms with western toilets available. The parking is a little confusing, we ended up having to park by the forest adventure place. I would've loved a walking path around the lake. They just have grass and benches. The grass was a nice change though. Overall I really enjoyed our visit.
Faith M — Google review
Gorgeous lake with autumn colours. The swans and ducks and fish were very cute. We saw many people camping as well! The scenery makes you feel really calm and it’s easy for old people to access as the steps are very flat.
Michelle L — Google review
Peaceful place. Not crowded with tourists. Locals go here for a little walk, sitting under the tree, enjoying surroundings with a cup of tea and biscuits. From the bus stop at the T-junction near a little farm shop, you need to walk around 800m to the lake.
Wewey H — Google review
Tranquility is the word to describe Lake Shidaka. An excellent place for couples, family and kids to pitch a tent, have a picnic and enjoy the cherry blossoms, magnolias, etc and water creatures like swans and carps. Good to wear a windcheater as the wind was very strong. :)
Shirley N — Google review
A very serene, clean, and beautiful lake. Very accessible by car from either Beppu or Yufuin. Beautiful scenery, free entry and free parking fee. The boat rental fee is ¥1,100 for 30 minutes and you can buy packed food for the swans and koi fish for ¥200. Recommended for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway, walking their dogs, or camping with friends/family.
Arkan — Google review
Was beautiful! There is a ReCAMP nearby if you decide to do some camping and a Redwoods tree course with a zipline. The Lake has a bunch of Koi Fish and a paddle boat that you can ride around and feed the fishes for a fair price!
Joe B — Google review
Shidaka lake is one of the best lake that I have visited till now. Lake Shidaka is a small mountain lake in Oita prefecture about halfway between Beppu and Yufuin and it is part of the Aso Kuju National Park. Lake Shidaka is a popular destination for who like to do the rent a paddle boat and cruise the water pedaling a boat resembling a giant swan with their feet or for people who simply want to feed the abundant carp. This place is perfect to visit in almost all kind of climate. Here we can also do camping bbq (all materials must bring yourself). You can also feed fish and swan. Among all seasons personally I like autumn and spring. I autumn you can found lots of maple which are very beautiful and in spring you can enjoy the Sakura (national flower of Japan). This place is very perfect to those people who loves the nature and wants to be close to the nature and also best of the meditation. The price of boating is 1100 yen for boat and can ride for 30 min and adding 100 yen also get food for fish and swan. If you are visiting beppu or yufuin you must visit this place.

Soba noodle shop
Izumi Soba is a popular spot located near Lake Kinrinko, offering terrace seating where you can even dine with your dog. Despite the occasional wait, the staff is accommodating and the terrace seats are highly sought after. The restaurant serves generous portions of well-made soba with various dips and sides. The hot duck dipping sauce is particularly recommended, although some may find the cold soba with yam topping to be an acquired taste.
Their duck hot buckwheat soba is wonderful. It comes in two layers of soba with one bowl of dipping sauce and sliced of spring onions. Hot ocha is provided free when you dine in.
Albert W — Google review
Simple but delicious with a beautiful view of Kirin Lake! The noodles had really good texture. I went for the hot duck soba noodles and it did not disappoint. They give you two trays of soba noodles, and the dipping sauce were a good pair. Hot soba was also a bit more expensive than cold soba, but at the end they give you some broth in a container where you pour the remainder of dipping sauce into and drink the rest. However, the additional broth they give you after could use a bit more flavor. It was a hearty meal otherwise. Recommended!
Esther H — Google review
Very fresh and handmade soba just not my type , the red bean dessert is not too sweet which is good. Overall close to kirin lake and the parking lot is next to the restaurant which is 600 Yen
Merry W — Google review
Handmade soba in the restaurant. A minimalist menu with just soba with different dips and a few sides. The cold soba with Yam topping is an interesting dish but probably takes some getting used to.
Em U — Google review
Entered here to escape the rain and cold. Wasn't a bad choice. The soba was well made, and the hot duck dipping sauce hit the spot. As other reviews pointed out, there wasn't much duck given, but that's prob not the point. You'd get two trays of soba which to me is just right serving amount. Staff were patient despite a full house with some roudy guests.
Eric K — Google review
This restaurant is famous for its homemade soba and the view of the lake. I found the texture of the soba rather too soft, as I prefer chewier noodles. It tasted like any other soba I could find in the city, and the provided sides like spring onions were pitiful, so I was quite disappointed. Also be prepared to find an overwhelming amount of tourists around you, which could drag your experience down.
Yvonne T — Google review
We came to this restaurant because we saw a big group of people waiting outside the entrance. Finally realized it's a restaurant serving handmade udon. We ordered a few sets of udon accompany with different sources. We found the duck source is the best out of everything from the menu. It's a little bit salty so the waitress would serve a pot of hot clear soup after 15 minutes. You can either pour it into your duck soup or simply drink it to clean your mouth. Worth it to try!

Udon noodle restaurant
Soba noodle shop
Koharu Udon is a quaint little udon restaurant that offers a special thick udon that takes extra time to cook. The menu includes options like spicy udon and yuzu udon in the summer. It's not a fancy place, but the noodles are highly recommended, with a chewy and bouncy texture that sets them apart from packaged udon. While there may be some waiting involved, it's worth it for the delicious noodles.

The female boss is blunt and unkind. The taste of udon is mediocre, the noodles are okay, but the soba was not good either.
Fam F — Google review
Had udon here for lunch based on other Google reviews and this is a gem! Located at the far end of the market street, there weren’t a lot of tourists when I went. Ordered koharu udom as recommended, and this is good! The udon is probably the best udon I ever had! it is so chewy and bouncy, and I don’t think you can have the same texture for packaged udon. Fried chicken is okay. it’s juicy and tender, but I don’t really like the batter. Will recommend for the udon! Please note that for tempura udon, the tempura will be soaked in the soup so it won’t be crispy
