Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Mentioned on

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, situated within the Okinawa Ocean Expo Park, is among the world's largest aquariums. Originally established for the 1975 world fair, this area underwent redevelopment to boost tourism. The Churaumi Aquarium, which opened in 2002, replaced an existing smaller aquarium. The park also hosts events like the Cherry Blossoms Festival and Flower Festa.
I visited Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and found it absolutely worth seeing. The highlight for me was the massive manta rays gracefully gliding through the water—truly spectacular and mesmerizing. As for the whale sharks, they didn’t impress me as much because I’ve previously swum with whale sharks in Cebu, but first-time visitors would still find them impressive. The aquarium features a wide variety of unique and unusual marine creatures, making the visit both surprising and educational. It’s a great experience for anyone interested in marine life. The only downside was the aquarium’s restaurant, where the food was mediocre and overpriced, but this didn’t significantly affect the overall experience. Overall, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is a must-visit spot in Okinawa. Whether you’re with family, friends, or alone, it offers a wonderful opportunity to get up close with marine creatures. The manta ray display, in particular, is truly unforgettable.

Mid-level aquarium, definitely not Japan’s best. Have enjoyed many others far more. Skip the car queues and head for carpark P9 which has multiple levels and heaps of parks. Still within walking distance. The best parts of the aquarium are free and located outside the building itself. Inside is super crowded and lacked flow from one exhibit to the next. Dolphin show outside was probably the most entertaining. Nice views across the ocean though…
Life's A — Google review
A little overpriced for what it offers, but probably because it’s more tailored towards children. Still, if I was a child I’d be lost in the dream world. We enjoyed the free parking, and the amenities of the park around it, but I would recommend hydrating before because every vending machine we saw was sold out. The lines were short, despite the crowds being deep. I lived in Atlanta Georgia USA, and the whale shark here reminded me of how massive and majestic they truly are. The grounds around the aquarium offer so much more, and the staff is quite accommodating and kind.
Michael R — Google review
Highly recommended! This aquarium is suitable for all ages, with an abundance of marine life and a well-planned visitor flow. You can see the famous whale shark here, and parking is super convenient! I recommend parking in P7; it's close to the entrance and has shade.
KE-HAO C — Google review
The wait to get into the parkade probably took 30mins, wife got tickets online while waiting so we didn't have to wait in line for tickets. If you're hungry, the lunch buffet is pretty decent, good variety. The cafe inside the aquarium is very busy and packed, when we went there was some food trucks as well but it was raining. The aquarium itself was great, very informative, very cool, and lots of variety. A lot more time to see the rest of expo park with the dolphins, the show, the sea turtles, the cultural area, observatory, beach, etc. we spent 2 hrs just inside the aquarium
Julian L — Google review
If you're looking for a valid reason to rent a car in Okinawa, here it is. It took us about two hours to drive from the rental car parking lot in Downtown Naha, and the second half was a scenic coastal drive with sneaky traffic lights that were positioned horizontally. The aquarium parking structure was huge, so we had no trouble finding a space. Admission was ¥2,180 per person which was less than $15, a good deal considering how expansive the aquarium was over four floors. It features one of the world's largest tanks called the Kuroshio Sea which holds almost two million gallons of water. Gigantic whale sharks and manta rays dominated the tank, but there were also thousands of fish of different species swimming around them with nary a care. There was plenty of marine flora and fauna to examine in smaller individual tanks. The aquarium's specialties include deep-sea species like salamander sharks that live at depths of over 2,000 feet. We missed the dolphin show, but life isn't perfect. A two-hour visit is probably sufficient for most visitors unless you're some fish fanatic. Not us though. We prefer our fish sashimi style. Too tacky? Sorry.
Ed U — Google review
The Aquarium is very big and shows an amazing number of fishes and other animals from the sea. To see a whale shark is very impressive, definitely! But I don’t believe the shark is happy in the tank. Even the tank is big for all the other fishes and mantas, for the whale shark is a small cage. This fish is swimming 100s of km every day, in the aquarium he circles only… Also the sea turtles live in a too small cage, they almost have no space to swim without touching each other. Even is a beautiful place to go, I feel it’s time we give these animals much more space or we should be prison them in too small cages… (just my opinion)
Thomas M — Google review
Most beautiful aquarium i have ever seen in my life 😍 the size of the big aquarium is judt mind blowing. Seeing the big sharkwhale swimming around is mesmerizing to watch! Next to that the aquarium has thousands if different fish and sea creatures to see, explore and learn more about! Definitely recommend everyone to go here!

Ocean Expo Park

Mentioned on

National park
Ocean Expo Park is a popular tourist destination in Okinawa, Japan. It features the impressive Churaumi Aquarium, which is one of the largest aquariums in the world. The park also boasts a beautiful beach, lush botanical gardens, and an open-air museum showcasing Okinawan culture. Originally developed for the 1975 world fair, the area underwent redevelopment to attract tourism after years of limited use following the fair.
The place is very big. Have theatre for dolphins show. Have turtle SANCTUARY, Manatee Sanctuary, nice beach for chill out. And Very impressed with the whale shark swimming in the aquarium. It's been there for 30 years. The aquarium is informative. Many sea creatures as well. Worth for a visit. Remember to watch the dolphins show.
Desmond L — Google review
Generally good but too many facilities and spaces are now barred. The other side of the park has few people to visit and I would really love to see more kinds of sea creatures here! Also a bit too crowded :(
Felix Y — Google review
This is undoubtedly one of the best aquariums on the island and a must-see whether you're stationed here long-term or just visiting. The exhibits are thoughtfully designed, offering an engaging and educational look at a wide variety of marine life—including some truly rare and awe-inspiring species. Keep in mind, it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, so I highly recommend arriving early to avoid the rush and enjoy a more relaxed experience. There’s ample parking available, but be prepared for a fair amount of walking throughout the facility—comfortable shoes are a good idea.
Abigail M — Google review
I really love this place, there is a lot of special creatures, unfortunately I missed the dolphin show, but I still have a great time to watch sea turtles and all sorts of marine creatures. If I live here, I’ll probably buy the annual pass.
Anson — Google review
The indoor aquarium is very impressive, but I found the manatee and sea turtle pools very sad to look at, no vegetation, no toys, some were lucky to have a rock.
Jonáš S — Google review
Relaxing, enjoyable, beautiful, and the sea life was great - especially if you like sharks and dolphins. Very affordable. Plenty to do for free. Plenty of parking.
Will S — Google review
Love this place! A must see in Okinawa. Expect to spend a few hours here and be immersed in all the marine and underwater life without going to the water.
Cindy G — Google review
There are many sightseeing points, and the best part is that the Okichan dolphin show is free to watch. Parking is free, and the show is free. If you want to see dolphins and explore the ocean more, you can go to places like Churaumi Aquarium. It’s a bit complicated when there are a lot of people, but the space is large and people tend to only gather during times when there are a lot of people. Okichan is cute.

Sights & Landmarks
Nakijin Castle Ruins, located in the northern part of Okinawa's main island, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a glimpse into the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom. Dating back to the 13th century, these ruins boast impressive castle walls and are known for their historical significance. The site provides insight into castle construction techniques of the time and showcases the power and authority of its former owner, the king of Hokuzan.
Our first tour in Okinawa. Our tour guide was amazing and well worth the cost. The castle grounds are beautiful and the walls are amazing. Don’t forget to go to the museum, too. Thank you to the staff. Very knowledgeable, professional and personable. Go early and avoid the crowds. When we arrived at there at 0900 and shared the castle with approx 10 people.
John F — Google review
Visiting the Nakijin Castle Ruins was like stepping back in time. Perched on a hill in the northern part of Okinawa, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers not only a glimpse into Ryukyu history but also some of the most breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and sea. We arrived on a sunny morning and were immediately captivated by the expansive stone walls — rugged yet majestic, winding across the hillside like a fortress from another world. Walking along the ancient pathways, we could feel the energy of a bygone era. The ruins are beautifully preserved, and though there’s not much of the original wooden structures left, the foundations and stonework speak volumes. The atmosphere here is peaceful and spiritual. It’s easy to understand why this was once a sacred and strategic site. From the higher vantage points, we were rewarded with sweeping views of the East China Sea, lush greenery, and the remnants of the castle layout. There are helpful signboards with historical information, and the walk is manageable for most, though those with mobility issues might find some parts challenging due to uneven stone paths. Overall, Nakijin Castle Ruins was a highlight of our Okinawa trip — a perfect combination of culture, nature, and quiet reflection.
Gator — Google review
Beautiful, serene castle ruins. Plaques around the site had information in several languages (Japanese, English, Korean and possible Chinese). Cute gift shop and air conditioned Rest Area with toilets.
Christine C — Google review
Peaceful castle ruins. Located atop a hill, so it opens up to some beautiful coastal views. There’s a small museum too- though not particularly interesting
Frank Y — Google review
Must visit when in Okinawa, the view up there is just beautiful. I have visited during sakura season and the blooms added to the charm of the ruins.
Armida A — Google review
A small version of the great wall of china. Sadly there is no castle to view. Only broken walls. But nonetheless it provide a good view of the sea from the ruin.
Jon P — Google review
Nice quick stop to see this historic site. Very well maintained, plenty of parking. Entry fee 700 yen. Trails well marked. Nice pottery shop at the turn from the main road.
Aida Z — Google review
One of the 9 UNESCO cultural heritage sites in Okinawa. All the Okinawan castle ruins look very much the same so you could skip this one if you have visited other castles like Katsuren or Nakagusuku. The site is beautiful and is worth visiting if in the area for its views. Judging by other’s people’s photos this place is beautiful when visited during the cherry blossom season.

Sesoko Beach

Beaches
Sesoko Beach is located on Sesoko Island, which is accessible by car via the Sesoko bridge. While visiting the beach itself is free, visitors should be prepared for additional expenses such as gear rental, showers, and other amenities. The area offers a variety of experiences including snorkeling with a diverse range of fish in shallow waters monitored by lifeguards. Paid parking and equipment rental are available on-site.
Sesoko Beach is an absolute paradise — with crystal-clear blue water that’s among the most beautiful I’ve seen in Japan! You can rent parasols and sunbeds for a small fee, making it easy to relax and enjoy the day. I recommend bringing water shoes, as the stones can be quite sharp. Still, the beach is very family-friendly, with lots of kids around and a lifeguard on duty, so it feels safe. Snorkeling is a must — the water is full of colorful fish and feels like swimming in a natural aquarium. Truly a stunning spot that’s worth the visit!
TancReady — Google review
Absolute paradise! Sesoko is one of the most amazing beaches I've ever been to! Good snorkeling and great sunsets. The water is crystal clear, sand is soft and there is coral to explore with colorful fish. The public beach parking is 1000 yen per day just yards away. They have umbrella and chair rentals and you have to pay for bathrooms/showers. You can also buy jet ski float rides, which look like a lot of fun. We pay for parking and bring our own umbrella and beach chairs. Heads up- the snorkeling area is netted off and they are strict about staying inside the net. There is also a lifeguard on duty. Tips: -Bring YEN for parking. Sometimes the credit card access is broken -Bring a small cooler with snacks and drinks -I'd recommend bringing fins if snorkeling. The currents can pick up -Check the tides before coming out -Water shoes for sharp coral
Jessica M — Google review
The beach itself is beautiful – no doubt about that. But be prepared: around 5 PM everything shuts down. No toilets, no showers, nowhere to rinse off your feet. If you're desperate, you might be able to sneak into the Sheraton next door – there’s a shower at the top of the stairs – but that's at your own risk. On the plus side, this beach is actually deep enough to swim even at low tide, which is a big deal in this area where most places turn into puddles.
Eugene Y — Google review
Great Beach • Parking: ¥1000 fixed price. • Beach: Beautiful, but the main area can be busy. • Recommendation: Skip the main chair rental area and walk to the right along the shore. You'll find a quieter cove with nice shady spots under the rocks and great scenery for photos. We loved it there!
Izzy Z — Google review
Such a beautiful place and a mesmerizing gift nature has provided us, the water is calm and warm, perfect for snorkeling the whole day and explore the reef as far you can go for. When the sun hits the water, everything is crystal clear, the rain made cooled off the day but still the swim was enjoyable. What can I say about the sunset, just as lovely as it can get, one of nature's finest hours that someone can capture and keep it as an experience for the rest of their life. Beautiful.
Juan M — Google review
Snorkelling on the beach within the netted swim zone had various small fish in clear shallow water. Paid tours were offered at the beach to better reefs sites. Beach offers beautiful walk along the coastline that has small caves and coves.
Jon V — Google review
Very pretty and not too busy, the water was very clear and they had the netted areas where people were swimming with their kids. The parking is 1000¥ flat rate, about a 5 - 7 min walk down to the beach.
Denise M — Google review
Water is not deep, only waist height (I’m 1m87). Also the sea doesn’t have sand, but rather a layer stone/dead coral, not easy to step around without sea shoes… Lots of fish to spot if you have goggles or snorkel, but again the water is not deep. And it wasn’t clear due to many visitors. Also very busy on a Friday afternoon, parking was 1000yen and a 5minute walk from parking to the sea. There are showers, toilets and a vendor which sells drinks/shaved ice. Can also rent sun-bed/parasol which was 4400yen I believe. (Rather expensive) P.s. if you walk to the left when going down the stairs, there’s a very nice spot to chill, I would suggest checking it out because the beach itself is not interesting.

Minna Island, also known as Minna-jima, is a small croissant-shaped island located near Sesoko Island in Okinawa. It is a popular destination for divers and snorkelers due to its stunning reef and diverse marine life. The island offers beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue waters, making it an ideal spot for swimming and other marine sports. Visitors can easily access the island via summer ferry services from Okinawa.
beautiful beach with coral washed up all around. The gorgeous green-blue colors of the water that makes me L♡VE my birthplace forever! This was my 1st time on the small, croissant-shape island. It was a quick 30-minute or so ride on the ferry from the main Okinawa island. Be aware that the island DOES "shut down" from Nov 1st- March (can't remember the day), meaning you cannot buy food there. I did see a drink machine, so drinks are possible. Remember to take your trash WITH you!
LEV E — Google review
Perfect day trip from Okinawa main island. We took the 11am boat & returned on the 16:30pm boat (check boat schedule online & buy tickets only in person), it was a relaxing day with also some fun activities - recommend the snorkelling sooo many beautiful fish! There are stands selling equipment/umbrellas/beds etc. but very overpriced, bring your own if poss! Originally I wanted to go to zamami island but the boat fully booked, this was a perfect alternative & felt less touristic. Would recommend anyone looking for island day trip & crystal clear waters!🐠🩵🌊💎
Paige B — Google review
I made the dive near the island and it is a paradise even under the water, with several corals and fish one more beautiful than the other, for those who are visiting this wonderful country, I recommend having an experience also under water Photos by Aloha Divers Okinawa. I recommend this company for those who want diving service, service in English, Portuguese and Japanese
Emy M — Google review
Our group just found this island in the suddenly when we don't know where the next beach should go for the rest days in Okinawa. Take a ferry about 30 minutes or more( I don't remember clearly) and land in island at 12p.m. The water is so cool, beautiful color with white sand. You can enjoy diving or cano driving but have to wait from 1-3 hours. However, almost people I saw in here would rather swim. Don't forget bring junk food and water because it's less store or restaurant stay nearby

Kokuei Okinawakinenkoen Emerald Beach is a national park that was established in 1976 on the site of the Okinawa International Ocean Expo. It serves as a central attraction for Okinawa tourism, showcasing the region's beauty under the theme of 'Sun, Flower and Sea.' The park features various facilities including the renowned Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Tropical Dream Center, Oceanic Culture Museum, and a dolphin show facility.
It’s called emerald beach and I know why it’s named like this. The color of water is as clear ad emerald. It was a bit cloudy when I got there but I’m sure when it’s sunny bright day the beach will shine like a jewel and clear green emerald.
June L — Google review
This is the best beach I have ever been to. Crystal clear water, and swimming area with jellyfish nets. There are free cold showers and paid hot water showers with changing facilities.
Hitesh G — Google review
Nice artificial made beach, but it is nothing special. A lot of lifeguards, actually too much… water is shallow with max. 2m at the buoys…. but ok, safety first. Not crowded, empty on Sunday in July. Water is clean.
Tomas J — Google review
What a beautiful beach!! The water was clear and the beach wasn’t crowded. No snorkelling, which is actually good if you want to enjoy a nice swim without bumping into anyone (although the snorkelling in Okinawa is amazing!). We had access as we stayed in the condos just up the street, but the hotel was beautiful from what I saw.
Jill C — Google review
This is my most disappointing experience in Okinawa. I drove 2 hours from Naha to find out that the beach is closed today. Why? The reason is not announced on the loudspeaker or in the announcements, and there is no information on the website. It is October 23, 3 p.m., and the weather is beautiful and sunny, with no rain or waves. WHY???? It is frustrating, especially since they did not even provide a reason.
Анастасия Г — Google review
It's nice but honestly very disappointing given the excessive control of so many guards, the amount of concrete spoiling the feeling of being in nature and the constant sounds of communication by the megafons leaving a vibe you're in a train station in Tokyo. It must be nicer if you are with young kids though, like a water park.
Bruno C — Google review
Lovely beach. Clean and clear water. Life guards are plentiful and very attentive. Unfortunately no warm shower, only very cold water and the changing/ shower area is very basic and quite poor but working condition. Snack stall has very basic food, drinks and icecream and you can rent beach chairs, umbrella and floats. You can also use the free pump for your inflatable at the shop.
Elizabeth Q — Google review
Damn good beach for young children. Older folk looking for more adventure or snorkeling or fish might be disappointed, but for young children looking for a safe place to enjoy the sea sand and sun, this is it! Infrastructure is acceptable for public beach though. The male shower was good. I heard the female toilet and shower was a disaster though, so be mindful of that!

Nestled within the stunning Ocean Expo Park in Motobu, Japan, the Tropical Dream Center is a botanical paradise that showcases an impressive array of tropical and subtropical flora. Established on the site of the 1975 Okinawa International Ocean Expo, this vibrant greenhouse spans six hectares and features over 2,000 orchids that bloom throughout the year. Visitors can wander through lush gardens filled with exotic fruit trees and colorful flowers while enjoying breathtaking views from its Observatory Tower overlooking the ocean.
Beautiful and Relaxing Tropical Dream Center is a peaceful oasis filled with exotic flowers, lush greenery, and beautifully designed greenhouses. The orchid collection is especially stunning — one of the best we’ve seen! It’s well-maintained, not crowded, and perfect for a relaxing walk or a break from the beach. The view from the tower at the end is a great bonus. If you enjoy nature, photography, or simply want a quiet, beautiful spot to explore, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

If you have not gone you need to. This place is amazing to see. If you want to see the jungle without the worry of what could eat me. They have amazing green houses. The self guided tour takes normal people around an hour. Took us hour and half. There are ac breaks along the way as it can get quite hot. If you are going to the aquarium, might as well stop by ins in the parking lot. Plus there is a cheap local taco rice shack across the street which is to die for!
Hannah H — Google review
What a beautiful and stunning botanical garden! It's definitely worth a visit. We saw so many orchid flowers in one place. We were coming in the evening hours and were able to watch the sunset right from the tower in the middle of the dream center.
Martin D — Google review
Finished the aquarium in 2 hours with lots of time to spare. Ended in this hidden gem which is imo much more interesting than the aquarium. Lots of flowers and photo spots. Be sure to make your way up the tower for breathtaking views of the entire area.
Keith S — Google review
I’m speechless – this is a true hidden gem in Okinawa! Even if it wasn’t right next to the aquarium, the Tropical Dream Center is worth a visit on its own. And even if you’ve already been to the aquarium – go anyway. It’s calm, peaceful, and surrounded by beauty. Every step feels like a postcard – photo-perfect at every turn. The self-guided layout is a brilliant idea: take your time, walk at your own pace, and truly appreciate the incredible effort it takes to maintain such a stunning place. Plan at least 3 hours, slow down, and soak it all in. No rush – just pure, tropical serenity.

We were disappointed by the Aquarium, but the Tropical Dream Center made the two hour trip to get there absolutely worth it. A stunning garden center with orchids, fruit trees, a myriad of colorful plants and lush vegetation. A must see!

Lovely place, we were rather late (2h before closing) when we entered and had the entire place to ourselves. No issues, just beautiful plants, trees and whatever counts for tropical fauna

Cute island to have a day trip and explore. There is a town map for walking to all the memorials. We parked and walked to the other end. It's got beautiful views looking back onto the mainland. There are many cafes to grab bites to eat. In the summer there are rental places for any water sport. Parking was free in the off season as places were closed. There is a fee to park during the season when the rental places are opened.

Pizza in the Sky

$$$$affordable
Pizza restaurant
Located in a traditional Okinawan house on a hilltop, Pizza in the Sky offers stunning views of the island, sea, and sunset. While it may not offer traditional Italian or New York style pizza, visitors can choose from two options: mix (everything) or cheese. The menu also includes salads, drinks, and mango dessert. The restaurant's setting provides beautiful vistas of Sesoko, Minna, and Ie islands as well as the aquarium.
Great location! It’s a short drive up to the top of the hill it’s on and well worth it. You remove your doors upon entry and there’s options of a couple of regular sitting tables and mostly floor seating. We opted for the floor. We ordered a pizza with pepperoni, corn, and onion, and it was super good with a nice crisp crust and a slight garlic taste that carries through. Bonus: On the property is also an amazing view of Motobu and the ocean.
Ellen M — Google review
We came here to escape the awful weather during a typhoon and the ridiculous queues to get into the aquarium. It turned out to be an excellent decision. Despite having to wait outside more than an hour as there was a queue, it was really worth it. The atmosphere inside was really nice and the service was great. The pizzas were top notch, something I had not expected in Japan. In fact I didn't really want to eat pizzas in Japan, but the circumstances dictated our decision and it was worth it. The views here are superb and it's very pretty, with plants and so on. It must be amazing on a sunny day.
J S — Google review
The most BEAUTIFUL restaurant with a view AND the pizza is fantastic! CASH ONLY restaurant. Our kids got the cheese pizza, and we ordered a Mix pizza which was so delicious. Wish I had saved room for the Mango with sweet sauce dessert. We sat outside in the covered area and it was so delightful with comfortable picnic tables and fans blowing. The cicadas noises added to the wonderful atmosphere. The interior part of the restaurant is no shoes, and seating on cushions including the back porch of the building. The covered outdoor area is picnic tables.

They offer a simple menu, and the pizza was served piping hot and good. The salad was generously portioned, and the staff were nice. That said, I wouldn’t make a special trip just for this.

Some of the best pizza on the island. The juices are also very refreshing and tasty. The staff is very helpful and friendly. You can tell they care about the atmosphere of the restaurant and the quality of the food to go along with it.

Can not recommend this place more. Atmosphere is more than 5 stars, food is great. Some of the best japanese pizza. Beautiful view and very friendly service. It is CASH ONLY but they take USD and Yen!
Hannah K — Google review
Visit the place during off peak meal hours. There’s always a queue. A quaint restaurant to visit as it’s a traditional Okinawa house. However, as it’s up on the hill/ mountain, the road up there can be quite arrow. If u are used to driving on flat lands or in urban cities, do skip this place as the driving maybe stressful for you. Menu is simple. One type of salad, one type of pizza with a handful of ingredients. For more pics and photos visit my IG: ms_wee_yp

Japanese regional restaurant
Kishimoto Shokudo is a historic diner that has been serving delicious Okinawan soba for over a century. The handmade noodles are prepared in the traditional way, using wood ashes from firewood, and the flavorful broth is made from soki (pork ribs) and bonito. Visitors highly recommend trying the large bowl of Okinawa soba for its generous portion of pork bellies.
Good soba served fast. Health serving of meat. Nice roomy seating options with tables unlike most small Japanese restaurants. Get there before noon to beat the lunch crowd rush

Unbelievably good. If you like Southern Barbecue then you’ll love this. Okinawan Soba combines the flavors of smoked pork with delicious chewy noodles and broth!
Jacob B — Google review
This diner has been in business for over 100 years, yet offers casual, affordable, and delicious Okinawan soba. The soba is, of course, handmade, but noodles are made in the traditional way, using wood ashes from the firewood. The broth is made from soki (pork ribs) and bonito for a robust flavor that you will want to drink to the last drop! If you are staying in northern Okinawa, we highly recommend stopping by this diner. You must pay in cash in advance, purchase your meal ticket first, and present it to the restaurant.

Order was taken at the front by a ticket dispenser, and it was quite simple. Very few options, and holy was it good! We all had the soba, which came with 2 different cuts of pork. Both were amazing! Noodles were delicious with great texture, and the broth was very flavourful. They also had mat seating in a section, which was different and a cool experience

A traditional noodle shop, it’s cool to tourist. Noodle is fine, and many local will have food here.
K F — Google review
Food was very average, definitely aimed at tourists. We decided to try it our as we were in the neighborhood and we saw the rating. If you want a simple noodles with a. "Soso" taste then this is your spot! Pay at the door with a machine and sit down, wait wasn't too long even being rather packed inside (about a 15-20) minute wait. Reviews below are from staff at the shop 😆 🤣 This is an actual review 😀 Whoever put the best Soba in Okinawa needs their taste buds checked ✔️

Okinawan soba is good here! Recommended! Get the large bowl as there’s more pork bellies.
Randy N — Google review
The best Okinawa soba I have ever ate. They had three sizes which is really convenient. The meat was soo soft and sweet, the soup was also really good! I would recommend this to anybody, I’d like to try the juyushi next time! The only downfall is that it is far from where I live 😅

Kishimoto Shokudo

$$$$cheap
Noodle shop
Kishimoto Shokudo is a must-visit for an authentic traditional Okinawa Soba experience. Despite the small size and inevitable waiting time, it's renowned as one of the essential spots on the island for genuine Okinawa Soba. The homemade noodles are firm and flavorful, complemented by sweet pork and savory, salty soup. The addition of chili-soaked awamori transforms the taste entirely. With a limited menu but fast service, this restaurant fills up quickly after opening.
I loved the soup because it had a strong bonito flavor. The taste was good and more unique than that of other shops. I felt Okinawa-style noodles are similar everywhere. However, Kishimoto stands out from other shops. Kishimoto has been open for a long time possibly before I was born. They have many autographs by celebrities on the wall. I saw the one written over 20 years ago, but I also saw the one only one week before we came.

A fun Okinawan noodle experience. We got in at 3pm before a rush so didn't have to wait, but they had already sold out of the delicious looking mixed rice (disappointed!) The vibes were fun, the staff friendly, and the noodles were tasty. Cash only, a few designated parking spots outside.
Julia M — Google review
After a long day at the beach, we stopped by this little cute family-owned spot to try their famous Okinawa soba with pork. It was absolutely delicious—the soup was perfect, and the pork was soft and tender! The prices were super reasonable, but make sure to bring cash because they only accept cash. We were lucky to arrive just before closing and ended up as the only customers, which made the experience feel very private and unique! The staff members were very nice and welcoming.

Found this place thru google reviews and decided to try since it's on the way to the aquarium. Went there around 4plus and the rice is sold out 😭😭😭 Meat is soft and tender. Broth is really tasty even till the last dropped. The noodles is smooth and silky but not soggy Recommend this place

There is limited parking across the street, and it was busy and hot! Payment is in cash, and one of their iced drinks ran out so we only had water. Of course you could always buy cold drinks from one of the vending machines. Go for the medium dish for 150 yen more.

It was fantastic!! Me and my family really loved this noodle! Especially my 1 year old son loved it a lot. Pork is little bit salty, so you need to eat it with noodle. Togetherr
전민식 — Google review
If you are looking for the best and most authentic traditional Okinawa Soba experience on the island, then look no further. Kishimoto Shokudo is 100% the place you should put on your bucket list for Okinawa Soba. For all those people complaining about the "waiting time", get over it. The shop is quite small and has had a line outside (even before opening) for years now as they are well known by everyone as one of the handful of quintessential spots on the island for REAL Okinawa Soba. My advice is to get there about 10 minutes before opening time and queue up with the rest of the folks (as they DO sell out daily). Check the hours, but the sign says Open at 11:00am and close at 5:30pm -- Fact is, I've rarely seen them open past 2-2:30pm... The soup base (tsuyu) is amazing -- but you should know that it is light, simple, and subtle. This is one of the major contributing factors that makes their Soba outstanding. If you are seeking something overly intense, you are really missing the point of Japanese Food and Okinawa Soba in general. A fine soup base shouldn't scream of flavor, but should just perfectly meld with the rest of the components as they do here. The noodles are a huge standout, as they are made freshly and following Okinawa tradition, the include a small amount of banyan tree ash that is used to define Okinawa Soba and gives the noodles a chewier textures while contributing to the dish flavor. Finally, the "sanmainiku" pork belly is spot on, simmered and braised for countless hours in a rather elaborate process that yields an outstanding tenderness of layers infused with just the right balance of soy sauce, sugar and Awamori. The menu options are very simple: Either the large bowl (そば大) or the small bowl (そば小) and if you would like an accompaniment, you should absolutely order the Okinawa Jyushi (ジューシー) Jyushi is a local only style rice dish (known as Takikomi Gohan throughout the rest of Japan) that gets it's flavors from a pork and dashi based stock cooked with small bits of carrots, pork, mushrooms and onions... It's a staple compliment to Okinawa Soba (Just like Ramen and Gyoza) and is the only other "must try" option on the menu. Otherwise, like any specialty shop in Japan, that's pretty much all you have in the way of options -- But, seriously after you've done Oki Soba here you will have conquered this dish and the rest of the island soba is pretty much just "meh" (save for a few other well known shops near Shuri).
Tony N — Google review
There was only 2 choices, small or big noodles and a bowl of rice. There was a short queue of 30minutes outside the shop. Service was fast once seated. Noodles tasted good, but average with no wow factor. Recommended if in the area.

Yanbaru Soba

Restaurant
Yanbaru Soba is a popular neighborhood find with a long line of locals during lunchtime. The restaurant offers both tatami and chair seating, and customers place their orders during the wait. The soba is highly praised, especially when paired with the local chili water condiment. Despite the limited menu options, the quality of the food, particularly the soup, makes it worth the wait.
Delicious Okinawa soba in a traditional interior. The noodles had a nice bounce to them, and the meat had a deep flavour.
Katherine T — Google review
Ordered soki soba and the broth and noodles were delicious. Meat was not as tender as you would usually expect for soki soba, but still tasted great!
Naomi Y — Google review
You would probably know it was here if you drove past at lunchtime due to the long line of locals but otherwise, a great neighbourhood find. We visited at around 11.30 and waited on seats outside the restaurant in the usual organised Japanese way for about 30 min for a table. There are tables on tatami as well as with chairs (the high chair for tatami are practical and cute - because Japan!). When you get inside the restaurant, you place your order during the final wait. There are 2 options: soba with (roasted) pork rib or (braised & toasted) pork belly (& fish cake) in small or large size. The kids soba is a small portion with a leaner piece of boneless pork and fishcake. Both were delicious and the broth was as well. Hot and cold tea is self served. The tv in the dining room is very reminiscent of eating in an Asian family home. Definitely worth the wait and would visit again if in the area.
Irene Y — Google review
Soki Soba and Samainiku Soba. 2 sizes each. Actually the soba is decent. Would not say it’s fantastic. However, it is worth a try. Most of the customers were locals/japanese themselves.

We had grilled pork soba. Even though, the pork is not tender but tasty. 👍
Be L — Google review
Really good soba! I wouldn’t know how “authentic” it is cus this is the only okinawa soba i ever had haha but it’s really good and worth waiting (there was a short line when we went). Do add in that chilli water thing on the table (it’s not oil nor is it like sauce. It’s this watery thing that i saw selling at the souvenir stores as a local... thing haha), it’s not spicy so you can defo try even if your tolerance is low.
Lim F — Google review
Simple restaurant with limited options but the food listed are very good especially the soup which you can taste has been boiled for a long time to achieve such taste. Quite a queue when we went on a weekday, waited for about 30mins but it's well worth the wait.

Kaihomaru is a minimalist restaurant with concrete floors and wooden tables, offering grilled fish, sashimi, and set meals. Visitors can enjoy succulent textures of sea grapes and fresh slices of fish while sipping on Shekwasha sour to increase their appetite. The restaurant is located in Hanasaki Marche Okinawa, allowing diners to explore nearby shops after their meal.
It's an accidental but great find. The seafood tastes fresh, and the large pieces of pork belly are tasty. Reasonable price for quality of food. Easy to order with English menu and then order via touch screen. Choice of seating arrangements including bar style.

Nice clean place. Very crowded. First time trying the sea grapes which are a little crunchy. The sashimi is fresh. Price reasonable

Superb sashimi restaurant. Before entering, you must take a number in the entrance area. Once it is your turn, you will be shown to your seat. Orders are placed via a tablet. Now to the food: we visited twice and the food was delicious! The fish was melt-in-the-mouth tender and tasted great. The chicken and shrimp were also very tasty. We would definitely return!

This is an excellent restaurant on the way to the aquarium. I have visited it two years in a row (February 2024 and July 2025). There are parking spaces available in the front, and if those are full, you can use the parking lot at the hotel located behind the restaurant. The food is fresh and delicious—I highly recommend everything from the sashimi and grilled fish with butter to the Okinawan local cuisine! Additionally, ordering is super simple using the iPad system. If there’s a wait, just put your name down on the registration form by the door.

Really good restaurant that serves an assorted of meals. Did not have a reservation but was able to be seated without waiting for dinner. Would highly recommend this place, everything we ordered was delicious. The seafood don was very good. This place is located with a bunch of other restaurants and shops so parking is ample and located at the back.

Visiting from California and stoppes here to eat a late dinner. We had a wonderful meal, and the service was pleasant. The sashimi set had assorted fresh raw fish so fresh meltedin my mouth,, rice bowl, miso soup, steam egg custard that was really good, and a fish soup that was also very tasty. The salmon roe (orange fish eggs) were so good they are seasoned and they taste sweet. If you have never tried the sea grapes they are also good not fishy at all and fun to eat.

Staff are friendly and serve with a smile. We are very happy to order the butter fish. Love the Bitterguord egg dish. Our family enjoyed the set meal. Everything is good. Will recommend to our friends.

We went for lunch on a weekend and were able to be sat right away. They do have English on their paper menus but they don’t have English on the iPad you order on. It was easy enough to use Google translate. I got the lunch special with tuna, side of karaga and my husband got one of the meals. We also got the tempura fish for an appetizer. It was all delicious and very affordable. We’re glad we stopped here before going to the aquarium.

Yakiniku MOTOBU FARM Motobu

$$$$expensive
Yakiniku restaurant
Yakiniku Motobu Bokujo is a popular yakiniku restaurant known for its comfortable and calm atmosphere, making it suitable for families and large groups. The 8000 yen platter may seem small at first glance, but the meat is thick and satisfying. They also occasionally offer ribs not on the menu, which are served on a small plate and provide good value for money.
Amaaaaazing beef quality. I had the family set at Yakiniku Motobu along with a few other dishes, and everything was yumyum. Personally the prime boneless short ribs are my favorite. It’s meting in your mouth. Pluse the yukke Highly recommend this place for anyone who loves good yakiniku!

Not only the beef was SOOOOO good, the spicy beef soup was a highlight too! (It was actually rice in soup.) If you like beef offal, beef liver will be recommended. It was very fresh that it didn’t have to be well cooked. Too bad that they didn’t have the thick beef tongue which is a minus :( The restaurant doesn’t have wide selection but if you’re the beef lover, this OSS the place you have to go for food!
Alice W — Google review
Best Yakiniku in Okinawa! I wasn’t able to take a lot of photos because the food was so amazing! The quality of meat is topnotch, I wish we ordered much more (even though I was so full after!!!) It was a bonus that the price isn’t too expensive either! Coming in alone is okay, I think. But yakiniku is better enjoyed with friends or family. This is one restaurant in Okinawa that I would drive to just to eat in. Perfect 5/5 stars. Highly recommended and will visit again when I’m in Okinawa.

The food was delicious, but the atmosphere was unfortunately very noisy, almost like a busy market. We visited to celebrate my husband’s birthday, expecting a special dinner, but there were many large groups with children running around, shouting, and playing in the dining area after their meal. It was so distracting that we couldn’t really enjoy our food. I believe the staff should step in and remind parents about restaurant etiquette. Some management is definitely needed to ensure all guests can enjoy their meals comfortably.

Steakhouse 88 is a popular spot that attracts a steady stream of diners, especially during dinner hours. Despite the bustling atmosphere, the restaurant manages to serve its guests efficiently. The steaks are generally considered above average and are served fairly quickly once you're seated. Visitors appreciate the quality of the food and efficient service, although it comes at a relatively high price.

what a waste! we add a baked lobster, it around 6000yen. but it comes out too dry, you can see the meat is hard and the shell is break into small piece. they totally ruin the lobster, so bad. btw, garlic butter topping is great.
Chloe P — Google review
We decided to try out Steakhouse 88 in Motobu during our Okinawa trip, drawn in by its reputation and convenient location. The restaurant is easy to find, and there’s ample parking, which is always a plus when traveling as a family. We ordered their steak sets, and while the beef was decent, it wasn’t anything to rave about—just average and didn’t quite meet the expectations we had from a place known for steaks. However, what really made our visit enjoyable was the buffet line that came with our meal. The buffet had a great variety of side dishes, salads, and local flavors. Everyone in the family found something they liked, and it felt like the buffet was the real star of the experience. The kids loved the curry rice and fried items, while we enjoyed the pickled vegetables and fresh salad options. It was a satisfying addition that made the meal feel more complete and definitely worth the visit. Service was friendly and efficient, and the dining environment was relaxed and welcoming, perfect for families. While the steak may not have wowed us, the overall experience—especially the buffet—made it a pleasant stop during our trip.

By far the fastest serving steaks restaurant i had visited. Our alll order arrive within 15mins upon placing order. The beefs cuts were good. Good varieties choose on the menu yet not confusing your choices. The rice/soup/salad bar were free flow if you choose a steak meal. No wonder their business was good. There are free parking available. The food was good and staffs were efficient and professional.
Hao T — Google review
The food was good, but it was pricey for us. However, my daughter really loved the garlic rice and our stomachs were full.
Lyzel Q — Google review
The price and portion were good, but to be honest, the steak was not very tasty. The meat was too raw and tough, and the staff didn't seem particularly friendly or helpful. Maybe I was just unlucky that day, but it wasn't what I was expecting.
Nami N — Google review
Steakhouse 88 in Okinawa earns a solid 4/5 rating. With a diverse menu featuring an extensive selection of beef dishes, diners are spoiled for choice. The beef is exceptionally tender, promising a delightful dining experience for meat lovers. Additionally, the inclusion of fresh vegetables ensures a balanced meal. Furthermore, the restaurant provides complimentary refills for beverages and offers options for rice and salad, adding value to the dining experience. Whether you're craving a juicy steak or exploring other beef-based dishes, Steakhouse 88 delivers on flavor and variety. However, to achieve a perfect rating, the restaurant could consider enhancing its ambiance or introducing additional innovative menu items to further elevate the dining experience. Overall, Steakhouse 88 is a must-visit destination for those seeking a satisfying and indulgent meal in Okinawa.
Tứ N — Google review
I ordered the whole lobster for 7,000 yen, expecting fresh, tender, buttery seafood… but what I got was closer to dried-out jerky stuffed in a shell. The meat was bone-dry, tough, and carried a super pungent fishy taste—but somehow, no actual flavor. It was like chewing on the ghost of a lobster that died twice. To top it off, it wasn’t even a true “whole” lobster—just the tail meat tucked inside the shell for show. For this price point, I expected quality and freshness, not a disappointment masquerading as fine dining. Easily the worst lobster I’ve ever had.

I can totally understand why this restaurant only get 3.6. The food is just OK for the price, service is normal. And there are a lot of people here, most of them are very hungry and have no choice but to eat here. So maybe more kind of food will be much better.

Beautiful view lunch buffet (22k Y for adults and 11k Y for kids under 12). Food was ok. The highlight is the dairy free ice cream for our allergic kids. There was no fresh fruit. Just a simple buffet at the aquarium. You cannot expect the food too much. The view is gorgeous even if it’s cloudy.

Instead of calling it a lunch buffet (which sets a certain level of expectation) perhaps calling it self-serve cafeteria food would be more appropriate 😝 Seems like only the curry/rice, soup, DIY Okinawa soba and coffee/tea are warm/hot; the rest are cooled/cold. Very family/kid friendly food types so it gets 2.5 stars. Overall 4 stars coz the view is fantastic!! (Avoid peak periods. We came in at the tail-end of busy lunch service (around 12:30) and it was a bit noisy and chaotic. After 1,1.15pm, the crowd thinned and the mood turns nice and enjoyable.

The Fuu Cafe is a wonderful place to drink coffee or lunch. It's decorated in a wooden and cozy way with plants outside. The inside is large and it seems like you could spend hours just running around. There's also a slide for the kids. The food is great - especially the pork bowl!
Atmospheric wooden house in a beautiful garden serving a mix of Okinawan and Italian food (pizza and pasta). Fuu also has its own coffee roastery and some fresh cakes. They take major pride in their coffee here. We had a few very enjoyable lunches and an outstanding dinner at Fuu. The lunch menu focuses on laidback crowd-pleasers, but the dinner menu has high aspirations, offering Kaiseki-inspired starter platters and high-effort main courses - albeit with the same easygoing atmosphere as lunch. Portion sizes are generous. Card payments are accepted, although a small sign at the counter said they can't process cards made of metal.

Naha Airport (OKA) serves as a gateway for both domestic and international flights, with regular arrivals from various Asian destinations. Located in Naha, it offers convenient access to the city center through the Okinawa Monorail, also known as Yui Rail. The airport is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes away from Tokyo by flight.
Naha Airport in Okinawa, Japan, is a solid airport with modern and functional facilities. Naha Airport is near the city center, making it easily accessible by public transportation like the Yui Rail. The airport offers a range of amenities, including restaurants, cafes, shops, and lounges on the 3rd and 4th floors. The airport's location on the coast provides beautiful ocean views, especially at sunset. Naha Airport is a pleasant enough place to start or end your Okinawan adventure. While it may not offer the extensive amenities of larger airports, its convenient location and scenic views make up for its limitations. With some planning and patience, travelers can navigate the airport's quirks and enjoy their trip.

Okinawa Naha Airport. An airport which serves both domestic and international flights. It is well served by the monorail which allows travellers who had landed at the airport to travel to city area seamlessly. There are many shops and F&B located at the level 2 of the airport, but mostly on the domestic terminal public area. Furthermore, after passing the immigration centre, there are 2 cafes available for passengers before boarding the international flights. Plus, there are viewing areas at level 3 & level 4 of the terminal for the public to have a bird eye view of planes taking off and landing.

Easy to navigate around the terminal on arrival. Staff at the taxi stand were great and spoke enough English to be able to communicate with.

Nice airport. Lawson right outside of luggage pickup. Connecting footbridge to railway. Convenient enough to get to the nearest town without hiring a car. And it’s only ¥320.

I was sitting in the international departure area and had the meal at Ramen Takoyaki. It was very usual that returning the tray once after finishing the meals. The moment I returned the tray to the areas of returned trays, that old Japanese grandma staff was mad at me and instantly pulled a face. I didn't do anything wrong. I have been to many airports. This is the worst customer service I have ever been received. Is it because I'm not japanese, you can treat customers badly and rudely.

I don't think I'm an unreasonable person. I've been to many countries, including many cities in Japan, but I'm very disappointed with Naha Airport! I arrived at the airport a long time early today. When the check-in was open, I saw the screen showing that my check-in counter was at window B. We lined up to check in. When we arrived, the other party was an intern, a young man with glasses. He said that my check-in counter was in window C and looked at my flight ticket. Although I was confused, I still confirmed whether he was in C. After getting a positive answer, I went to the C counter to queue up. It was hard for me. The teller at the C counter said that my check-in was in B. At this time, it had delayed me for almost an hour. I told the other party in English that I knew my information. After repeated confirmation, the B counter asked me to go to C. Finally, their manager pulled me to the B counter and handed me over to another stinky-faced female manager. She listened to me tell me about the incident as if it were our fault. There was no apology in the whole process, let alone an apology. On the contrary, we were like the unreasonable person, which made me very uncomfortable. And I will consider complaining to them by email.
