Tōji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan, known for its 5-story wooden pagoda and ancient sculptures of deities dating back to the 8th century. Despite being spared during World War II bombings, it holds great cultural significance. The temple is famous for its weeping cherry blossom called the fujizakura which blooms early and can be seen upon entering the grounds along with numerous other impressive cherry trees.
Echoing others, this temple was so lovely. We couldn't tour in the pagoda, but you could go in the nearby buildings which were full of beautiful statues. It wasn't busy when we visited in late-May (a big highlight) and had nice bathrooms. Just a really relaxing space with beautiful gardens. We easily reached by bus and was a highlight in Kyoto. Easy cab ride to other areas in Kyoto.

November 2024: Blessedly peaceful and only few visitors on the weekday. The historic architecture can be appreciated by those who understand the intricate details, and the garden makes for a beautiful shot of the pagoda. Absolutely wonderful to see nature’s friends enjoying the surroundings too
Byu S — Google review
I came here for the autumn night viewing last November and it was nothing short of spectacular. The entire place is strategically lit up in a way that accentuates the structures and surrounding landscape. The pagoda in particular looks amazing and there is a lake in the garden area that reflects the pagoda off its surface. When I went, some of the buildings were open so you could look at the statues inside. Admission was ~1000 Yen, if I recall correctly. I hadn't planned on coming here originally but am very glad I made the spontaneous decision to do so.

Me and my parents visited this place in the evening and the view was stunning! Although only a little red leaves when we were there, the layers of colour (green/ yellow/ brown/ red) mixed together in harmony. The temples and Buddha statues were breath taking as well! Highly recommended. If not because if the time constrain, I'd love to visit there in daytime too.
Cindy L — Google review
Absolutely spectacular! It was crowded and warm in September, as to be expected, so bring water, dress cool and arrive early! It’s stunning! The gardens and the grounds are serene and the pagoda is remarkable! Be respectful, as this is a holy place and people are there to pray at the temples.
Kim S — Google review
The 2 huge main halls smell like ancient wood, very calming & zen… The garden is quite small, pond water is kinda dirty, but got a big grey bird & nice photo views of the pagoda. Good to visit for once.

To-ji Temple surprised us with how tranquil and serene this place was. It was also neat to visit this temple’s pagoda, the tallest wooden structure in all of Japan. We lucked out because the pagoda happened to be open, a rare occurrence usually only reserved for special occasions. The temple gardens were lush and calming, especially by the pond. Inside the temple itself stood massive sculptures that make us feel so small, though no pictures were allowed inside. Time wise we spent about an hour and a half to two hours here comfortably. We’d love to come back here someday. Make sure not to miss this wonderful place!
Cody P — Google review
I love the Zen feel of this place, and i was even more excited to be able to go inside the temple and swe all the statues. I wish you could take photos inside.... it was a pretty amazing thing to see. If you want to see a beautiful garden and some amazing historical buildings, this is a great place to stop. There is a small cover charge. And you might want to read up on the rules and what's respectful to the temple before you go.

Tōfuku-ji Temple, established in 1236, is a prominent Buddhist temple located in the southeast of Kyoto City. It boasts stunning gardens that are particularly famous for their vibrant fall foliage. The South Garden is intricately designed to reflect Chinese Mythology, incorporating elements such as white sand representing the sea and five hillocks symbolizing important Zen temples in Kyoto.
Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto is one of those places that quietly steals your heart. Unlike the more crowded temples in the city, Tofuku-ji offers a serene and reflective atmosphere, perfect for those seeking peace and beauty. One of the highlights of this temple complex is the Tsutenkyo Bridge, which gracefully stretches over a lush ravine. When I visited, it was winter—bare trees framed the path, revealing the architectural elegance of the bridge and the natural flow of the landscape. The stone steps leading up through the moss-covered slopes added a sense of mystery and timelessness. Even without the autumn foliage that Tofuku-ji is famous for, the scenery was absolutely captivating. The minimalism of winter actually allowed me to notice the details—the aged wood of the bridge, the subtle design of the fences, the gentle sounds of wind rustling through the trees. It’s easy to get lost in the moment here. Every step felt like part of a meditative journey. The gravel paths, the winding walkways, and the traditional gate structures all contribute to an immersive cultural experience. Tofuku-ji is just a few minutes from Tofukuji Station, making it a convenient stop during a Kyoto visit. Yet it still feels like a world apart—quiet, sacred, and untouched by time. Highly recommended for those who want to explore a quieter, spiritual side of Kyoto. (Late post, but the memory still feels fresh.)

(Only visited 通天橋) A fresh green scenery in summer. Quiet but maybe better in the fall or spring with map leaves or cherry blossoms. Well maintained and cool.
Daniel L — Google review
Visited Tofuku-ji Temple in summer, about two hours before closing. It wasn’t crowded, and the green, calm atmosphere helped cool down the hot summer heat. A peaceful and refreshing visit.
Duong L — Google review
Skip the crowds of Kiyomizu and come here. This is a beautiful temple where you can actually feel some peace and calm because it isn't packed shoulder to shoulder. The rock garden is very serene and there are people just sitting and meditating in the beauty. We missed the color change by maybe a few weeks but this place would be spectacular when colors change. It is packed with maples.
Brett B — Google review
Incredible temple with the best Zen garden I have ever visited. I write this review from the Hondo garden, where I have been reading and contemplating the sculptures for hours. So peaceful, and not as busy compared to the other temples in Kyoto. Take your time here, be respectful, and disconnect for a bit.
Jash V — Google review
Absolutely loved it. As others have said, zen like feeling walking around here. No pushy, crowded, ignorant tourists like the the well known temples and castles. We legged it from our hotel opposite Kyoto station via the back streets, mixing with the locals. Crossed railway tracks with boom gates, fantastic. A great day. A true lesser known gem.
Peter S — Google review
I love this temple because it's got all the beauty of a rock garden, views of temple vista, mini hike, and peaceful scenery without the touristy crowd. It's truly a hidden gem and walking distance from fushimi Inari shrine if you've finished that long hike up the mountain. It's worth the 1000 yen to do both the garden and the bridge. The stamp for 500 yen is also amazingly intricate and beautiful.
Clemens W — Google review
What a great way to spend a day. Relaxing and not crowded even though it’s only one station from Kyoto station. I’ll be coming back in a few months. I’ll be back with family and friends it was that nice. Pictures don’t do it justice. You just have to experience it all yourself. I’ll be avoiding this place as the colors change but will definitely be back as time permits. Thank you @tabieats for mentioning this in your recommendation. This one was excellent.

Saiho-ji, also known as Koke-dera or Moss Temple, is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto renowned for its exquisite moss garden. The lush and peaceful grove boasts over 120 varieties of moss, creating a mystical and serene atmosphere. Visiting the temple requires an advance reservation made through a mailing process, which can be quite intricate. The heart-shaped garden was designed in 1339 by Muso Kokushi and surrounds a tranquil pond, offering visitors a stunning experience.
It’s definitely worth visiting if you want to experience peace and tranquility in a beautiful Japanese-style garden. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are quite expensive, costing $55 for two tickets. Each entry allows a maximum of 50 people, and the garden closes at 1 PM. Need about 2 hours to enjoy the garden.
Khue H — Google review
This is a temple that moss enthusiasts must visit during the rainy season. The moss here is well-maintained and features a variety of species, unlike other temples that have a more limited selection. The design of the courtyard is also very innovative, with a different scenery at every step, making it suitable to spend several hours exploring at a leisurely pace. The reservation system also helps maintain a relatively quiet atmosphere in the temple. During my visit, I explored the entire courtyard in heavy rain, and I hope to have the opportunity to return here after the rain next time. After all, having wet shoes and socks can affect the overall experience.
Ray G — Google review
A must visit location for a bit of self eflection amd tranquillity amongst a beautifully maintained heritage site. Book online prior to coming, there is no entry otherwise on the day. Prepare to copy a written text prior to visiting the gardens, this was a unique experience using a writing desk in a temple. The sutra is a blessed token you can take woth you to remember your experience by. Of course with all the photos you'll no doubt take.
Jessica C — Google review
Such a unique experience! Definitely book in advance. The visit takes just over an hour. First, you’ll copy a sutra (prayer) - very neat and meditative experience- while sitting in the main hall, about 15 minutes. Then you can walk around the gardens. We went at 9:30am and it was absolutely beautiful. Over 120 species of moss!
Monica — Google review
⚠️ Instagram tourist trap ⚠️ • The entry needs to be reserved in advance and costs 4000 yen per person! • The sutra copying is a gimmick, if you are a tourist. If you are a Buddhist, then there are definitely more accessible options. • The garden is nice, but overrated. If you've ever been to any forest in Japan, then you could find a lot of moss covered places. I get it that is is not so neatly organized as in a garden. • The walk in the garden is roughly 20 minutes. • The price is so high just because Steve Jobs visited. Before is was few hundred yens (according to other reviews). • There are other, much cheaper alternatives, e.g. Gioji temple. Totally not worth it. Total rip-off.
Roman Č — Google review
You have to buy/reserve tickets beforehand. I believe we got ours a week before. It keeps the crowds at bay so better photos! Earlier times have less people as with most temples in the area. Absolutely beautiful.
Chelsea P — Google review
you need to pay in advance and make reservation if you want to visit the temple ‏there is an amazing garden that is worth your time and effort and spiritual activities if you wish to participate
Sharon P — Google review
Wonderful experience. Incredibly serene, atmosphere, within a beautiful temple. Yes tickets are needed in advance, and we preferred the format to managing the tranquility and keep the facility from being overrun with foot traffic. Would gladly visit again.

Nestled atop Mt. Arashiyama, the Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama offers a delightful escape into nature where visitors can observe wild macaque monkeys in their natural habitat while enjoying breathtaking views of the city below. This charming area is not only famous for its playful primates but also serves as a gateway to explore the stunning Bamboo Grove and scenic riverbanks that define the region.
The Monkey Park is a fun and unique experience if you don’t mind the hike. The walk up is fairly steep and can be tiring, but once you reach the top you’re rewarded with incredible panoramic views of Kyoto and the chance to see monkeys roaming freely. You can even feed them safely from inside a building, which makes for a memorable experience. It’s not a long activity, but it’s a nice combination of light exercise, great scenery, and a close look at the monkeys. I’d recommend bringing water and good walking shoes, and planning your visit on a clear day for the best views. Also make sure you come right as it opens
Elizabeth J — Google review
It was a fun experience and a great place to visit so as there aren’t so many people. The monkeys are fun to watch and listen to them play around. Funny characters for sure! The hike up can be hard for some people but nice that they have benches to rest and take it easy. You’re also able to feed them while you’re in a cage (not really it’s just a building where they’re outside free and roaming around but come to the window area so you can feed them). Cute!
Alfredo G — Google review
First of all- let’s start with this: amazing. It’s a great view with monkeys living their lives. The price is not bad but it is cash only. Secondly, it’s a hike. It’s not too bad but it can be for some people and children, they do have seats along the path, however it is a bit of a walk. Yes, there is a lot of tourist but as long as you follow the rules and enjoy monkeys with a view- you’ll have a great time!
Michele L — Google review
This was a fun experience. The walk/hike to the monkeys can be challenging for some people and I do not think it's wheelchair accessible due to the steep stairs. The short hike is worth it when you get to the top and see the monkeys roaming around freely. Another added bonus is the view from the top.
Sovann S — Google review
Amazing!! A public bus will take you across the bridge before the park, which gives you an opportunity to view the beautiful gorge. However, the trail is a 20 MIN incline on a VERY slippery path, so ensure to bring adequate footwear! The monkeys are so cute! And Arashiyama is full of food to try too.
Till — Google review
Was so excited to visit a monkey park while on my trip to Japan, so I was lucky to find this one on my one day in Kyoto! The hike up to the top was 20 minutes with rest stops along the way, not too far but took one break to catch my breath. Went on a Monday so there were not huge crowds. Absolutely worth it for what was waiting at the top, so many cute monkeys all running around freely and an insane view of Arashiyama!! I enjoyed it so much and spent over an hour there. The view alone was worth it!
Alana X — Google review
amazing experience!!! takes a bit of a walk up before getting to the monkeys but some of them are hidden in the trees above you, just eating little leaves🤣 they are honestly hilarious and adorable all at the same time! definitely kid friendly too and great for families.
Lily L — Google review
Cool place to observe monkeys in a relatively safe atmosphere. Trust me, I have experience going to such parks in Thailand and Bali, and these monkeys seem to be well-fed and well-behaved enough not to attack visitors. Also, I don’t understand the complaints about the mountain hike - it’s actually quite easy if you’re not old and don’t have any mobility issues. It would be just a nice, slightly uphill walk through a beautiful forest.

Togetsukyō Bridge

Bridge
Togetsukyo Bridge, located in Arashiyama, Kyoto, offers stunning views of spring blossoms, fall foliage, and surrounding mountains. This wooden bridge dates back to the Heian period and spans about 200 meters over the Katsura River on one side and Hozu River on the other. Historically popular among nobles for nighttime strolls with performances staged along the way, it has become a symbol of the region.
Visited Togetsukyo Bridge during my Kyoto trip — truly a must-see spot! The scenery around the bridge is stunning with the river, bamboo forest, and mountain view in the background. During autumn and spring, it looks even more colorful. Many small shops, cafes, and local food stalls nearby make it a perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon.
The ( — Google review
Extremely crowded area this time of year. However, when you're on the bridge, it really is a beautiful site of the lake and mountains. There were boats taking customers around and other what appeared to be private boats. The water level at the bridge wasn't deep and was able to see fish and turtles.
D Z — Google review
2025 August 4★ Beautiful bridge. Stretches pretty long and the areas around the bridge is nice. Mountain background, which is also the way to the monkey forest, so if you're going, you definitely need to walk across. Definitely picturesque.
K W — Google review
Cute bridge design. Everyone crowds around the entrance so walk along a lot more and head for the middle. You'll get great views of the mountains on one side and the plains and water on the otherside.
Ayesha A — Google review
The Katsura River isn’t deep, but it stretches wide through the Arashiyama valley. It looks as if it has been slowly carving its path through stone for millennia, patient and persistent. The basin below is littered with smooth boulders and rounded pebbles, polished by time and water. The surrounding greenery feels almost soft to the eye — pillowy, rolling, and restless in the wind. What little water moves does so quietly, as if whispering through the stones. The mighty Mississippi this is not. The Togetsukyo Bridge, whose name means “Moon Crossing Bridge”, spans roughly 155 meters across this tranquil river. The first version was built in the Heian period, more than 800 years ago, though the current structure dates back to 1934 when it was reconstructed in wood and reinforced with concrete. The bridge connects the Saga-Arashiyama district on the north to the Arashiyama Park area on the south, leading to cafés, shops, and even the trail that winds up toward the monkey park. Crossing it on foot takes only a few minutes, but the view of the mountains reflected in the river makes it easy to slow down and forget time altogether. We didn’t cross. Our guide advised against it since our stop was brief, and what looked close would have taken too long to return from before the bus departed. True to form, a few adventurous souls ignored the warning. They had to find their own way back to Kyoto. My dad had a saying: “Hard head makes soft behind.” It fits here. Listening to your guide isn’t about obedience — it’s about respect for everyone’s time, not just your own. There’s beauty in that too. Sometimes discipline is what lets you enjoy the moment fully. Arashiyama teaches that in its own quiet way: the bridge, the river, the wind, all reminding you that serenity and structure can coexist.
D.L. P — Google review
This bridge stretches across the river and provide access to the other side after we alighted from our bus. There are plenty of places to visit over there but we wanted to kick start our morning with the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest first via the traditional entrance. There are really good views from the birdge especially when we arrive early in the morning during sunrise. I had my breakfast nearby, enjoying the vista displayed before me in all it's splendour.
Gevs — Google review
This bridge should be on your walking path in this area. When you cross the river to the other side you get to see stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The bridge links the residential/commercial area near the main train station with the touristy area with cute little shops and the monkey park. This is how the river looked in early April. You can see cherry trees on the mountains and a few very nice ones in this area. The bridge sidewalk is very small on both sides so it gets really crowded here around noon. Best to walk through this area in the morning, the only thing is most shops don’t open until around 11AM and that’s when it gets busy.
Shawn — Google review
Beautiful views at sunset over the river. Boats, autumn trees and wonderful lighting. Can get quite busy as it is the main crossing between various points of interest in Arashiyama, but if you are not in a rush, it is a great spot to watch the river and hills. Nice view of the city also.

Myōshin-ji Temple is a significant Zen Buddhist complex with 46 sub-temples, established in the 13th century. It serves as the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism and offers Zazen meditation sessions. The temple boasts traditional Japanese gardens dating back to the 17th century and houses various attractions such as Ryoan-ji Temple, Taizoin Temple, Keishunin Temple, and Daishinin Temple.
That was just a very beautiful experience. This place is the largest zen buddhist monastry in japan! Most temples are closed but you can walk through the area and enjoy the architecture and nature. Also, make sure to visit the taizoin garden. The garden is beautiful and has a very special vibe to it. Also, there were no other people when we there, which is great!

Very interesting complex around the main temple to wander around for free. Various temples have small entrance fees for very small areas to view that don't quite feel worth the cost, especially if you've already been to the various temples on the east side of town and know what to expect, but the whole area is still worth visiting if you are touring the west side.

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Kura Sushi - Nishioji Shichijo offers a unique dining experience that blends modern technology with the traditional joy of sushi. This conveyor belt sushi spot is perfect for both locals and visitors, featuring an automated ordering system where you can select dishes from a tablet or grab items directly from the conveyor. The bottom row features affordable options, while the upper tier allows for more specific orders. With a delightful variety of sushi types—including seafood, vegetables, and meat—there's something to satisfy every palate.
90 % of selections were very good, burger sushi not so much. Fat belly salmon was a hit for me but all fish plates were fresh and well executed. Family restaurant, very noisy but kids are having fun and that's the important part. Prices are honest, staff polite and patient, they took the time to walk us through the process of ordering and check out. English menu provided.

Quite modern sushi in terms of how to serve the customers. All were automatic and not many human interaction. Firstly you need to get your ticket from the machine and wait until your number is called and get the designed table number. And then just sit, grab the table on the table, put your orders, eat and the press finish. You then walk to the cashier machine to scan the QR code, pay and finish. The dishes were all good and fresh, the price also very reasonable. Recommended

Conveyer Belt Sushi :) Relatively cheap plates (120-300¥) and good fish. The lady at the counter greeted me warmly and also helped me find the water cups (up top) and the water dispenser (down the hall to the right in the corner). For the love of god, please try the Fatty Albacore Salted Yuzu plate (230¥) if it's available when you go. Comes with 2 pieces, topped scallions and the aformentioned ingredients. One of the tastiest bites I've ever had. Sour Zesty / Salty / Fatty, just so so good, can't recommend it enough. Other recommended: Tempura Cod(?) is very nice, salt-aged tuna is cheap and tasty but not too special but the fatty aged tuna is obviously really good, though a tiny bit more expensive. Also, there's a gacha game for players. Who buy 5 or more plates (as of rn) I got lazy so I didn't get many pictures but pictured is my check halfway through, a part of the ~700¥ set of 7 pieces, the whitebait (avoid, very bitter) and of course, the Albacore Yuzu.

There was some campaign when we get to this restaurant, so there is quite long queue. When we got the queue number it said we have to wait around one hour but we ended up with 40 minutes which is acceptable. At Kura sushi they put sushi on the belt and every plate has it own cover. Food were alright and standard but price is so cheap. It is only ¥120 for a plate and they applied the same price for almost of all dishes.

Fast food sushi place but cannot fault it. Been there a number of times on this trip. Take a table number at the door sit down and start ordering on their tablet. Great food, fast beer, go and enjoy.

Feels very novel as a foreigner, but it's cheap conveyor belt sushi, where things on the bottom row were all one price and then you had a tablet, in which you could order specific items that came on the upper conveyor. You can also win a prize for every 5 plates you put in the dispenser, which is a lot of fun. Overall the food was nice, great mix of sushi types, including, seafood, vegtable and some meat options. Desserts are available, as well as soft drinks and alcohol. Personal favourite was the onion rings which seemed to have been cooked in a tempura batter.

Chill and fun sushi spot with great fried food. Sushi was just okay but that's to be expected with conveyor belt style Sushi. The grape cider was absolutely delicious, I highly recommend.

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Jojakkoji Temple, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Yōkoku-ji Temple (Yanagidani Kannon). All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Nestled in a serene forest with stunning views, Jōjakkōji Temple is a hidden gem in Arashiyama, Kyoto. While not a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts breathtaking scenery throughout the year. In spring and summer, the temple is enveloped in lush greenery, creating an enchanting atmosphere. However, it truly shines in autumn when its 200 maple trees burst into vibrant hues of red and gold.
Beautiful gardens off the beaten track. If you want to find some zen in a quieter area visit this temple. Only 500 yen per adult. The bamboo forest was ridiculously packed with tourists at 11am as we were leaving.

Beautiful complex, and so much less crowded than the bamboo forest. Go here after you get annoyed with the hordes. Lots of stairs, climb all the way to the top for a nice view of Kyoto.

Favourite temple around this area. Definitely worth paying for. Not only the gardens and the shrines are beautiful, but the view of Kyoto from the top is incredible. I came at 9am and I had the place for myself.

Beautiful temple on the hillside — probably the most beautiful one we visited today. The grounds are spacious, with a lovely garden, lots of moss, and beautiful old trees. There’s also a great view of Kyoto from the top. Peaceful, green, and absolutely worth visiting.

Worth the visit. Some of the trees have started the autumn foliage. Best season for me. Quiet temple and you can enjoy the walk… and stairs to see the city from the observatory point

If you ever find yourself thinking if the extra ¥500 admission fee is worth it, then the Jojakko-Ji temple is definitely a location where you can be assured that that money will be well spent. The temple is absolutely breathtaking and has it all. The short hike across the temple grounds will take you all the way up the gorgeous, flower surrounded platform with a view of Kyoto, while getting there you will come across gardens, shrines, and pagodas.

Ine, located in the Tango peninsula, offers a picturesque sight with over 230 boat houses floating in the sea. These unique structures were initially constructed for fishermen, serving as both boat storage and living quarters. Accessible only by sea taxi or ferry, Ine provides an exclusive experience.
Food is finished!!! Extremely delicious and the udon are cooked really smooth and bouncy to my liking Portion is a bit small but the goodness of the beef makes up for it. The place is also spacious and have lots of seating! They have window seats that faced the mountain so it’s nice Good service and good food!
Faith — Google review
Despite choosing this place spontaneously, the food was delicious. The set came out fairly quickly after ordering on a tablet and the cold dessert was great (especially post a half-day of non-stop walking). The price was reasonable and the portions filling.
Sophie N — Google review
Very good food. I had the tofu udon I believe. Great size and decent food. Maybe a little bland but the value, location and cleanliness are all lovely and add a bit of the provided chilli pepper and it’s great. Definitely worth it as nice location and decent homely food that will hit just the right spot for a light lunch. They also serve more expensive options with wagyu beef but are all around ¥2000. Limited drink menu but unlimited green tea and water are provided.

Tasty, comforting udon in the peaceful village of Ine. Fresh noodles and flavorful .Service was a bit slow, but the atmosphere made it worth the wait. Great stop if you're in the area!TQ

The restaurant as soon as you walk in is very clean. In every table they have a table where you self place your order. The food was good. The whole restaurant is self service but they don’t let you know in advance or in the tablet. The food took a while to come to the table, one plate came first, 5 minutes the second one and the last two, about 15 minutes later. We were a party of four. On the self service bar they have a water and tea dispenser, napkins and utensils. We encountered a bad experience, in one of the soup we found a metal bag tie. We let them know, one of the employee acted like she didn’t understood and the other one only say sorry.
Julito R — Google review
We like this restaurant. It is located opposite the temple. After walking around, you can come here to eat. The udon noodles are delicious. There are many menus. The staff is good.
Kritanan S — Google review
The wagyu yuba hot udon was average and nothing. I think the store is better with their deserts. The set comes with a small serving of brown sugar Warabi mochi. The texture was very soft and delicious. It's located on the way to Arashiyama bamboo forest, and about 10min walk from the JR station. The food is overpriced as it is within tourist attraction area.
Joanna — Google review
A decent choice for udon and dessert. I tried the yuba wagyu udon—it was okay, though nothing outstanding. My sister tried a different dish, which was also decent. The dessert was fine, though we wished we had ordered the ogura topping, as we didn’t realize it was a topping option and not an extra portion of ogura. The prices are reasonable enough, especially considering it’s located in a touristy area.

Seiryo-ji, also known as Saga Shakado, is a serene Buddhist complex located in Kyoto with classic architecture and beautifully landscaped grounds. While there may be similar sites to visit in Kyoto, Seiryo-ji is a noteworthy temple to explore if you're in the Arashiyama area. This peaceful and tranquil temple has stunning gardens and exteriors that exude calmness and happiness for anyone who visits.
I wasn't aware of this temple until I passed it whilst on my way elsewhere, but it was certainly one of my highlights in Arashiyama. The temple houses national treasure status artefacts and allows quite generous access to the temple buildings. We ended up spending over an hour wandering around the complex. As well as the main hall there is a walkway to the rear with views of a beautiful garden. We were there in the early spring and enjoyed viewing the plum blossom. If your itinerary allows, I highly recommend stopping by Seiryo-ji.

This was a nice surprise as it was incredibly quiet (8:45) and agaain at (9:45) when we came back. The grounds are nice to wonder around, and much quieter than many of the other temples in Kyoto.

Very beautiful Buddhist temple where maintenance is top-notch. Most buildings are all built with pieces of wood and old, traditional architectural Japanese style. It's very impressive and comes with good energy. There is an unexplainable vibes that you have to feel it yourself.

Jingo-ji Temple is a historic Shingon Buddhist temple located on Mount Takao, housing several National Treasures of Japan. The temple offers a unique experience where visitors can get rid of bad karma by throwing clay discs off a terrace into the valley below. The area around the temple is also ideal for hiking and enjoying nature, with trails leading to other attractions like Mt Atago.
Jingo-ji is on its autumn peak now! (21/11/2024) It's so serene and peaceful, perfect for those who wants to see off beaten path spots in Kyoto. However, walking up through the stairs is required to reach the temple. Make sure to wear comfy shoes.
Annisa A — Google review
Beautiful temple with a rich history and unique cultural heritage, including the tradition of throwing pottery discs off a cliff to “lose” your worries. The staff are also very friendly. This is the starting point of a hiking route via Kiyotaki to Arashiyama, a beautiful way to begin a trip through northwestern Kyoto
Manuel N — Google review
This is my third day in Kyoto and I found my favorite temple. The grounds here are expansive, exceptionally well maintained and set in the hills. We happen to be staying across the road, but access to it is easy from Kyoto via a couple of city and JR buses to Takao. We took the City Bus 8 which is hourly for the heart of Kyoto without any transfers. What I loved is that it was quiet, peaceful, you felt like it was 300 years ago. No huge crowds, no queues, no tour guides. You could sense how it should be. The building are maintained but still very rustic, again a great sense of what they should look like after hundreds of years. On the day we were there only the Golden Hall was open for entry, unsure if they open other buildings on other days. It is also set in its natural surroundings. I was just telling my son while we were at Nijo-jo Castle that it is ashamed the planners did not buffer temples and castles with even 100 meters of natural space around it when they built the city. That’s not the case here. The only sense of society is a small restaurant at the foot of the entry steps, Suzuri Ishi-tei. (What a gem, I’ll do another review for it. Let’s just say it was great to hike up the entry stairs, take a lunch break, then continue to the temple.)

As of today 19 Nov, the autumn foliage is peak here n best! Do climb up to watch the valley of rivers between 2 forest mountains

Beautiful temple complex just above Takao village! I hiked from Hozukyou station (which is on a bridge over a river between trees, simply stunning!) to Takao. If you like to walk and you have the time, do it! Very nice trail and you walk along the river most of the time. At Jingo-ji, before you go up the stairs to the main temple, swerve to the left to get to the other end of the complex where you can buy 3 kawarake (clay discs) for 200 yen. You throw them off the mountain to keep bad karma away. The colors during autumn are simply stunning!
Jonas L — Google review
We visited here on a rainy day and there were not many tourists so it had a very nice atmosphere. Hope to have an opportunity to visit again in a different season next time.☀️
ChungChung B — Google review
It is an amazing place to visit. l really loved this #temple. lt has an amazing view of the mountain side especially during Momiji season, loved the colours. It is like a painting. Also, if you are lucky enough you could hear Yamabushi San playing an instrument during your visit. It is such a holy place, so peaceful. Definitely one of the must see in #Kyoto.
B. A — Google review
It's a hike for sure, but it is a worthwhile achievement if you make it to the top of the stairs. In the main area, everything is so big that it feels like you are in the presence of giants. Lovely just to walk around agape at the sight of it all. In early foliage season the mix of colors turned into this beautiful rainbow pattern in my phone's camera. This temple is worth the trip, which seems pretty easy to do by city bus, to get away from the crowds and get a temple with a very different feel from the ones in the city.

Yoshimine Temple, an ancient Tendai Buddhist temple established in the 11th century, is renowned for its stunning pagoda and the famous 'Gliding Dragon' pine tree. Situated on the outskirts of Kyoto, it offers a tranquil and remote location that allows visitors to immerse themselves in its serene ambiance.
Located in the middle of the mountains, and there is a very convenient parking lot. When we arrived there, it was evening time. It not only had a beautiful autumn scenery, but also provided a beautiful sunset view. The famous pine tree, is a posture of lying down, which is very worthy of attention.

Fantastic place where very few tourists venture. Around 90-100 minutes from Kyoto. Reaching it seamless, courtesy Japan public transport 👏🏼🙏🏼. Loved the silence, tranquility and peace it brought to you. No one to push you, rush you or jostle you 😀. Entry fee 500¥. You have to climb a lot but definitely worth it!! A very old shrine, some part of it out of bounds.

Absolutely gorgeous in the summer when the hydrangeas are in full bloom. I was totally blown away as I wasn’t expecting that many hydrangeas. Do note that the walk up to the temple is quite steep, and the temple grounds are also riddled with inclines as it is a mountainous site. Definitely worth visiting as the views are incredible from above.

Visited on Nov 18th, 2023 the leaves have mostly changed into fall colors. Been living in Kyoto for 3 years, I'm tired with crowded spots, this temple is a recommended spot to stay away from crowds. If you're easily hungry, make sure to bring food with you, there are no food stalls/restaurant inside the temple. Vending machine is available on the temple. There is a bus 66 from Higashi muko station to the temple once per hour.

Amazing place with stunning scenery! Great place to go during over populated autumn/spring season in Kyoto. I highly recommend it!! The location isn’t very convenient but that is why there are much much less tourists coming here despite its beauty. Living in Kyoto for over 7 years now, I would definitely choose to bring my friends here even if they only have couple of days in the city. It’s much worth it (I’m not a big fun of crowded places). The temple is big enough that allows you to enjoy about 1 hour or more to explore (there is a walking path with a lovely view of the city, etc.) Even though I came here to see the autumn leaves, this place is also known for beautiful cherry blossoms (as in the famous picture of Kyoto).

Yokoku-ji is an ancient Buddhist temple situated on a mountainside with picturesque views of its hydrangea garden. In November, the Mimoji are undergoing changes and visitors can see different washing basins adorned with flowers and pumpkins. The hydrangeas bloom beautifully in June and July, making it a high season for visitors, though parking may be limited at times. Despite this, parking is free for all visitors to the temple grounds.
Must visit in for Hydrangea event from June 1st - 30th! It’s unreal so many things to see, even more than the dragon and Tori gates littered with hydrangea! One hiccup is transport there, but the temple is one of if not the best I’ve been to while living in Japan. So absolutely willing to overlook it!
Thomas G — Google review
If you go in summer, you will see some of the most beautiful hydrangea displays. The entry fee is very reasonable and all of the grounds are decorated with pretty installations, and there were some food stalls too. The only negative is how inaccessible it is, as there are infrequent shuttles during the celebrations but they are often full. We had to get the train nearby then an uber to the temple, and when we were leaving we struggled to get another uber. Be prepared for crowds if you go in summer, but I would still recommend it.

Or you can do picnic with family or friends. You can find toilet easily in every corners, and all bending machine seem attach behind on it. The site is really huge, you can flying a kite there as well. Except for bicycle, skateboard, rollerblades etc... It's prohibited to ride inside the site.

It is a wonderful place to spend a day, though we had only an hour that day. With kids or not with a date or alone one will definitely be happy at this park. Apparently, it is a historical site of the AMA tribe, very handy people at their time, The place itself is a wide open area divided into sections and each section has a cafe like Starbucks or a BBQ restaurant along with a wide range of attractions for kids : jumping, climbing, water play or bug catching , indoors or outdoors. There are some rules like Bicycles are NOT ALLOWED but kids scooters and striders were seen. We came by car, parked at one of the two large parking spaces In front. I paid 100yen for an hour and I think they have some Maxim 700 or 800yen per day, quite affordable. It's also a walking distance from JR TAKATSUKI station.
Hanna H — Google review
You've got to commend Takatsuki for making a park of this size, kudos to them, but it's not a particularly fun park. There's a couple of OK restaurants, which is nice, but there's not a single picnic table. There's no playground, no slides, no nothing, just grass and flowers. (updated, 2 years later: there's a free, small "jumping castle" (not an actual castle but idk what you call them, an inflatable trampoline?) for small kids now but it's still essentially a very boring park.)

Nice park but super unfriendly towards dogs. Why is there only ONE spot for small dogs? Near the train tracks you should have an area dogs can walk around on in the grass and clover, leashed is ok. Missing alot of opportunity with all this wasted land near the train tracks.

Definitely recommenses to anyone who will be visiting Landau area during that time of the year. This festival is known all over Japan as one of the best koinobori fest of the country. I wish I'd known it before, during sakura season, as the riverside is full of cherry blossoms trees. Also, during mid-spring and summer you will see a lot of children bathing in the river. Sojiji, a prominent Buddhist temple, is renowned for its numerous annual festivals and features dedicated prayer spaces and a picturesque garden. It is conveniently located near the new railway station with both JR and Hankyu line accessibility. Currently, airconitnor and electrical work can be completed here at affordable rates.
This is a beautiful temple that is off the beaten path. The highlight for me was the beautiful koi pond and their turtle enclosure. It seems that turtles are a symbol of this temple.

(Translated by Google) Sojiji Temple is a short walk from JR Sojiji Station. Access is easy, with only the occasional train noise. There were very few visitors on a weekday evening, so we were able to relax and enjoy the temple. Although it sits quietly in a residential area, once you climb the stone steps and pass through the temple gate, you'll be overwhelmed by the sudden grandeur that unfolds before you. The Kongorikishi statues at the Niomon Gate are impressive, and there are many things to see, such as the main hall, Yakushi Kondo Hall, Knife Tomb, and Dementia Prevention Kannon Hall, so time will fly by if you take your time to explore. Takatsuki Castle Park is a historical site with remnants of a centuries-old castle, featuring megalith stone walls from Shodoshima and Awajishima. After World War II, it served as a base for laying railroad tracks. The park offers playgrounds, flowering cherry trees, and a folk museum. It was strategically located between Kyoto and Osaka, with gates like Kyoto, Akutagawa, and Tomita.

Ikkyu-ji is a remote and historical Buddhist temple that features a peaceful garden atmosphere. Unlike other popular temples, Ikkyu-ji is less touristy and has a smaller size that allows visitors to spend 1-2 hours exploring the serene surroundings. Admission fee for this temple is 500 yen while parking charges are 300 yen. The site offers traditional Japanese treats such as dried natto and sweets.
This Temple is outside Kyoto City. You can Take a Train to Shin-Tanabe Station and then take a bus, taxi or walk. Just a few groups visit the temple at the time I visit. The place is very peaceful. If you are the fan of anime “Ikkyu san” , you must love the place.

It is open to the public every summer to dry out insects. It depicts Kannon Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Kannon) preaching to people in his disguise as Teishakuten (the goddess of mercy), children, etc., and saving people praying after they are lost at sea or attacked by tigers.

Bistro
Nestled in a charming residential area, Bistro Monvieil Ami is a delightful culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Upon first glance at the menu, you might think it leans towards the pricier side, but once your meal arrives, you'll quickly realize that both quality and quantity are exceptional—making it quite affordable! The appetizer platter is a feast for the senses, featuring an array of fresh vegetables alongside delectable quiche and savory chicken ham.
An absolute delight ! Be sure to come with an empty stomach because the dishes are quite volumy, but everything was very delicious ! I'm French and the quiche reminded me of home ! And it's not too pricy so I definitely recommend it !
Juliette N — Google review
I tried 3100 JPY déjeuner. The price was too low. The quiche was very good! The salad, couscous, and chorizo came with it was also very good. I recommend it. Soup was also good. The plat, the baguette, and dessert was not so great. The plat was duck with pinapple compote sauce. I understood what the chef wanted to achieve, the balance of fruity sweet-and-sour, hint of salt and rich duck fat and meat. But the compote and sauce was too sweet. The duck was quite well cooked but the overall balance of the testes was not achieved. The dessert has the same problem. The citron + creme was too sweet. The tea sorvet along with it was very good. But again the balance was not achieved. It may be what it was supposed to be. But I felt the baguette was too dry and not so fresh.

(Translated by Google) I visited for lunch, and the portions were amazing. The appetizer plate is large and comes with salad, quiche, pate de campagne, and potage, so it's enough for just the appetizer. For your main dish, choose meat or fish, but whichever you choose, it's a hearty dish. We strongly recommend that you go on an empty stomach. There was a good amount of dessert, and the Mont Blanc was very delicious. Drink pricing was also reasonable. I would like to go there for dinner too. It was Friday and there were 3 groups of us in total. I was surprised by the quantity of the appetizer platter. In addition to vegetables, it also comes with quiche and chicken ham, which are delicious. The soup was a new onion soup, which was also delicious. For the main dish, I had fish (sea bream poire). The sea bream itself is large, but the amount of mashed potatoes underneath is also large. The accompanying vegetables, bok choy, lentils, and broccoli, were so hard that I had a hard time cutting them with a knife. I wish it had been heated a little more. And in terms of quantity, you don't need mashed potatoes. I had the dessert separately. It was delicious. Individual accounting is not possible. Ramen restaurant
Ramen Yokozuna Takatsuki is a renowned ramen eatery located on Route 171, known for its flavorful Aya ramen and spicy dumplings. The restaurant stands out with its prominent yellow store and signboard. Aya ramen is a popular choice among patrons, containing tasty balls, kimchi, generous portions of classic green onions, and "Ninton". The spiciness of the dumplings adds to the overall appeal, without being overwhelming.
(Translated by Google) [Visit Date] Sometime in July 2025 [Purpose of Visit] With a friend after work [Good Points] In addition to the reassuring flavor of Yokozuna Ramen, the teppan fried rice is amazing! It's so much fun to pour the beaten egg onto the hot teppan, mix it while listening to the sizzling sound, and eat it, and it really gets your appetite going. The ramen is topped with a generous amount of free domestic green onions, and the addition of homemade garlic chili peppers called "Ninton" adds a punch of flavor. This is truly a manly ramen. The kids' ramen is also a fantastic deal at 300 yen. The parking lot is spacious, which is great for those with cars. [Concerns] The teppan fried rice is exciting, but the teppan is so hot, so be careful not to get burned. [Recommendation] I recommend the hearty ramen + teppan fried rice set! Adjust the amount of green onions and Ninton to your liking and enjoy different flavors. It's a great restaurant that's easy to use for families or individuals. I ordered a regular ramen for ¥720 and a C set (two pieces of fried chicken and a small bowl of rice) for ¥320 (their prices, including tax, are fantastic). My bill came to ¥1,040. For me, Yokozuna Ramen is a taste of my youth, lol. I've been going there since my student days, so it's truly the best. I used to go to Yokozuna Ramen Takatsuki for my final ramen after a trip back from Kyoto to watch a baseball game at Koshien. The soup is a typical Kyoto-style soy sauce tonkotsu ramen. The free topping of Kujo negi (green onions) is a real treat for onion lovers. Even back in my student days, I would have three refills of Kujo negi (green onions). Topping my ramen bowl with ninton (simmered ginger) and grated garlic, dipping the negi in the soup, and eating it was truly a delight. The fried chicken tasted okay, but the rice was firm, just the way I like it, and it was delicious. The pork slices were also lean, just the way I like them. If you ask the staff for grated garlic, they'll bring you some they keep in the fridge. Each seat is equipped with a pitcher of water, garlic, and a bucket for your luggage. There's a parking lot, and the staff left a good impression. Fishmeal, which may be a strange tasting item, is also placed there, and it looks pretty good. It was medium-thick curly noodles instead of the usual thin noodles, and it was a decent amount. As usual, I added a heaping amount of green onions and finished the meal. I think it's a good value for money at 830 yen including tax. Thank you for the meal. Yakiniku restaurant
Ushijizou is a charming yakiniku restaurant that has been beautifully transformed from an old house, exuding a sense of history and warmth. As you step through the entrance, you're greeted by a spacious interior that invites you to relax and enjoy your meal. The garden view adds to the dining experience, making it even more delightful. The menu features various lunch sets with tender, juicy meats that are sure to satisfy any palate.

You can enjoy the garden through the gate, and there is a solid entrance at the back. When you enter the front door, you will be surprised at how spacious the space is. Choose one of the lunch sets. It's delicious anyway. The meat is soft and juicy and very satisfying. Eating your meal while looking out at the garden is the best. The staff worked efficiently and I had a good impression of them. Since the store is located in an old house, the number of seats is limited, so it might be best to make a reservation. The parking lot is not that big, but it is easy to park. Also, there doesn't seem to be a fixed place for motorcycles and motorcycles, but there are plenty of empty spaces, so you won't have any trouble finding a place to park. Good place to go hangout with friends or solo. Depending on where you live I would go out-of-my way to go here. It’s quite far from any of the local stations, (JR-Takatsuki and Hankyu Takatsuki-shi) There’s so much to do here, bowl, karaoke, play panchiko machines, those ridiculous crane games. There’s a decent variety of arcade games. Currently due to CORVID-19 round one is doing a good job with the Social distancing by spacing out the games and the sanitizer around the place. There are two restaurants connected to Round one as well as a really small Don Quixote store, there is plenty to eat. Overall good place for family-friendly fun and or decent place to hangout with some friends.

It's a pretty standard bowling spot. However, it's really far from the closest station. There is a free shuttle bus that goes between the station and this place, but on the weekends it is so crowded and it's almost impossible to get on it. I knew it should be in its original position, but they must have realized I'd been playing for quite some time, and yet they stubbornly put it back in its original position. What's more, the prize I was aiming for was placed far away. I asked them to move it to a position where I could reach it because the arm couldn't reach it, but they kept putting it back in its original position. They could only move it back to its original position. They said I'd be scolded by my superiors. (Translated by Google) Visited in May 2025. I visited with a friend for the purpose of making a pilgrimage to the Thirty-Three Temples of the Western Provinces. I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't read the name of the temple... It's written as Anaoji, but pronounced as "Anou-ji"! I parked in a nearby paid parking lot at around 7:50am. *The fee was 500 yen. There was a liquor store between the parking lot and the Niomon Gate, which I was really attracted to, but I gave up because it was before opening time... You can enter the garden from 8:30, so I was able to enjoy the grounds at my leisure until then. There was a no-longer-used (?) onigawara (demon tile) placed under the veranda, so I felt like I got a little something out of it by being able to see the onigawara (demon tile) that I usually look up at up close. The garden (500 yen to enter) has a beautiful view, but it also has Emperor Meiji's belongings on display, creating a very quiet and calm atmosphere. It's a solemn feeling, so I recommend you to visit the garden when you visit! Gyoza no Ohsho - Takatsuki City Office is a delightful spot for those craving authentic Chinese cuisine. The restaurant offers an array of set menus, but the standout items are undoubtedly the gyoza and fried rice. Guests can request their gyoza to be grilled to perfection, resulting in a crispy exterior that pairs beautifully with a tangy vinegar and pepper dip. For those who prefer an extra crunch, there's even an option for double-sided grilling when it's not too busy.

Came to the store around 4:30pm on weekdays. It is built to let in the western sun, but the blinds let in a gentle glow, allowing for a relaxing meal. A restaurant where you take a seat, look at the menu, order, and pay at the cash register when you leave. Stir-fried vegetables → It's so delicious. Very satisfied! Aburinji → A long time ago, when I ate aburinji in the Kanto region when the menu first appeared, I no longer eat it. I decided to order it for the first time in decades after seeing a TV broadcast of Job Tune. This fried chicken is different from anything I've eaten before. Super delicious, impressive! I think it will become a regular menu item for me. Very satisfied with the texture and flavor. Zero gyoza → Is this really zero garlic? Leave the gyoza as is. Salt (for fried chicken). Gyoza sauce. Eat three ways. Salt is also good. I want to try mayonnaise next time. I wanted to try this restaurant to see if it was particularly delicious. 2025.01.08. It was a dish I could eat until the very end without getting bored. Next, the sweet and sour pork, with juicy meat perfectly coated in a sweet and sour sauce. The texture of the onions and carrots was also pleasant, and it went perfectly with rice. It was a simple yet comforting dish, typical of Osho. The fried rice was beautifully fluffy, with a soft aroma of egg and green onion. It was a simple yet classic flavor that made me say "this is it!" from the first bite. It went well with every dish. And then there were the gyoza. The skin was crisp and fragrant, and the juicy filling oozed from the inside. The garlic flavor was subtly strong, making it the perfect accompaniment to beer. It truly deserved to be Osho's signature dish. When ordering through the mobile app, as of 6 PM, the only option for pickup is after 8 PM, so it would be convenient to make a reservation by phone. Even if they're busy, are they really only able to schedule shifts so tight that they can't even answer the phone? The restaurant is in front of Takatsuki City Hall and has a large parking lot. There are other stores on the premises, so the parking lot is often full at lunchtime, and you often have to wait to be seated at lunchtime. This time, I went in around 11:30, so I was called right away and was able to be seated, and the food came out relatively quickly. The lunch at エッソンス・エ・グー, a French restaurant, was exceptionally delicious from start to finish. The main fish and meat dishes stood out for their exceptional taste. As a fruit lover, I found the dessert melon soup to be particularly enjoyable. While some reviewers mentioned concerns about the chef's attitude and the timing of serving and lowering dishes, it did not detract from the overall pleasant dining experience as the food arrived on time.

Italian restaurant
Pisola Takatsuki Otsuka is a delightful Italian restaurant that offers a stylish, resort-like atmosphere perfect for enjoying a meal. Guests can place their orders by scanning a QR code on their table, although some have found this process cumbersome and suggest improvements like clearer menu categories or images to enhance usability. The food here is truly commendable; the pasta is cooked to perfection with balanced flavors, while the pizza boasts an impressively chewy crust that pairs wonderfully with its toppings.

This time, I ordered the ``Selectable value set''. When you take your seat, you will be given a plate with a QR code written on it, which you scan with your smartphone to place your order. Of course, you can also order verbally to the staff. When paying, take this plate to the cash register and pay. The pizza dough was plump and elastic. The potatoes taste like thick potato chips. Overall, I was satisfied with the taste, including the other set menus. Personally, when it comes to pasta, I prefer Jolly Pasta. If it's a set menu, you need to let them know when the dessert will be served. You can also order by smartphone. Although the atmosphere makes it easy to linger, the overall menu is priced a little high. There is also an all-you-can-eat menu, and it seems like there is basically no time limit. The toilet was also clean. We ordered a pair set, but the food was served so quickly that our hot and cold dishes and pizza were brought out all at once. We were there to enjoy our meal at our own pace, so we informed the staff, who instructed us to call for the pasta at our own timing. Shortly thereafter, the pasta was brought out without any prior notice. What's more, it was a different dish from what we ordered. First of all, the staff are not properly trained. Serving hot dishes and pizza at the same time is truly unacceptable. Also, it would be much appreciated if the staff could time the order accordingly rather than calling us. While ordering mistakes are unavoidable, I think there should be proper communication between staff. I also felt that if there had been another help at the reception desk, we wouldn't have had to wait so long. Overall, I got the impression that many of the staff just wanted to "just do their job." My wife and I have been regular customers here for a long time and have been very satisfied, but this experience has given us the opportunity to try a different restaurant. It was a very very disappointing dinner.
