Tsuyama in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Tsuyama, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Tsuyama is known for its well-preserved samurai-era streetscape and the atmospheric Joto district, which offers a glimpse of an old castle town. The ruins of Tsuyama Castle in Kakuzan Park are a major draw, especially during cherry blossom season when hundreds of trees bloom around the stone walls. The city also features retro attractions like the Tsuyama Railroad Educational Museum, reflecting its history as a rail hub. Local specialties, including Tsuyama horumon udon and other beef dishes, add a regional flavor to any visit.
With favorites like Tsuyama Cultural Centre, Joyfull, and 焼肉レストラン慶州 津山店, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Tsuyama Central Hotel Town House and とんこつ鶏ガラ醤油 ばり嗎 津山山北店 so you can get the best taste of Tsuyama while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Castle
Historical landmark
Tsuyama Castle, originally known as Soja, is a historic site located in Tsuyama City. Established in 713 as the capital of Mimasaka Province, it gained significance in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated local warlords and united the nation. Tadamasa Mori developed the capital of his domain rapidly after being awarded Mimasaka Province. The castle's stone remains are situated in a hilltop park and are renowned for hosting an annual cherry blossom festival.
An amazing remnant castle, the Donjon is no longer however it is definitely worth a visit and there is enough of the remaining castle grounds to enjoy. Spring is spectacular there!

It is a very nice place to visit to learn about the local history and for some great views over the city. There are some unique limited time art exhibits located onsite as well as around the city to explore.
Katherine A — Google review
Not really sure it’s worth the visit. Big grounds but most of the main castle have been destroyed
Paul Y — Google review
Small castle on top of a hill. Highest castle in Japan. We drove and had to park at the bottom of the hill. There is a shuttle bus from the car park which will take you most of the way up for 500 yen return (closed December). Note there is still a bit of a walk with a lot of stairs.
Warren R — Google review
It is the largest castle in Japan, and it is overwhelming scale. The view from the top is wonderful, the time of cherry blossoms and the time of autumn leaves are the best. Stone wall is lighted up in the amazing colors at night.

(castles visited 50+) The coolest thing about this castle is you can see it from much of the city and visa versa. Plenty of cities have castles buy this one, you can really see the castle mountain and the castle from most of the city. The castle park was really nice. At the time of this review, it seems they are still resorting various parts. If you look at my photos you can see the hotel from the castle and see the castle the hotel.
R D — Google review
If there were still castle tower, it would be more amazing castle but that was decomposed because of historical background. Even so, this fort looks amazing and also looks like maze ;) I guess some cosplayer will love here;P I forgot to take photo... I haven’t seen Sakura here that I decided to estimate 4 stars . The castle is surrounded by tons of Sakura trees that I’m sure here will become super beautiful place in Spring. I look forward to visiting here again .

Walls well preserved, however not much left of the buildings. Nice 180 degree view from top.

Tsuyama Castle Kakuzan Park is a historic site featuring the remains of an ancient castle, set amidst a sprawling urban park adorned with thousands of cherry trees. The park offers breathtaking views of the city and is particularly enchanting during the Tsuyama Sakura Festival. Visitors can enjoy strolling through the expansive castle grounds and capturing stunning festival photos, including a mesmerizing fireworks display.
Visited time 2022.4.9 This is my first time visiting to this castle! It's really nice during Tsuyama sakura festival although its a little bit late to see sakura flowers. The castle's compound is very big and the city view is very nice! I personally shot these festival photos and will put fireworks video for those who missed it! (I cropped the video for final part) One the way to the castle from the station is also good for sightseeing! (Walking for 15mins) For the people who come from Okayama station using Tsuyama line, you need to prepare some cash in advance for train fees because you cannot use IC card to pay.

(Translated by Google) This is a masterpiece of modernist architecture located within Tsuruyama Park. Even if you compare it to the Kagawa Prefectural Office, it has a profoundness that doesn't pale in comparison. There is the ruins of Tsuyama Castle in the park, and there are still stone walls left, but there are also stone walls around this building, which matches well with the surrounding environment. Earthquake-proofing construction is currently underway, but it was usually possible to tour the interior if you requested. The interior of the main hall was also wonderful. In any case, I'm glad that this building will continue to exist. Nestled adjacent to the historic Tsuyama Castle in Tsuruyama Park, the Tsuyama Natural Science History Museum is a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts and curious minds alike. With an impressive collection of around 20,000 items on display, visitors can marvel at everything from stuffed animals and fossils to minerals and insects. The museum also features exhibits showcasing endangered species, providing a unique opportunity to appreciate biodiversity up close.
You can see many stuffed animals here. Other exhibits include many specimens of fossils, ores, shells, butterflies, and insects. In addition, there are actual human body organs, and surprisingly, the brain of the former director is on display. Some may feel a little scary because it looks very realistic, but it is a place that both adults and children can enjoy. It is located near to Tsuyama Station, which is a good point, too.

It's a bit strange. It is a place which has 20 thousand natural specimens. Many labels are handwritten. The founder clearly put a lot of love into their work. Maybe that person died and now others dont care for the building? They have so much, and many endangered species from before the laws were changed. The building itself is an old church and kinda falling apart. It smelled of moth balls. It's a very eerie contrast with the meticulous specimens. And they have a lot of them. They have a polar bear, lions, tigers. Even a baby lion. Very surreal experience.
Samus G — Google review
This is an outstanding museum pertaining to creatures including mammals, shells, insects, and humans. It's certainly one of the best museums in Japan regarding the nature. It is sad that not a lot of people know this place. For the sake of the founder, Mr Mori Keizo, it is important for us to appreciatively preserve this museum for the generations to come.

(Translated by Google) I visited the museum for the first time during the night session, which started at 6:00 PM. 🔦 In pitch darkness, I wandered through exhibition rooms 1-15 using only my cell phone light. At first, I entered with an adventurous spirit, but I was overwhelmed by the beauty and power of nature, with so many exhibits, including stuffed animals, the first director's organs (photography prohibited), skeletal specimens, shells, and fossils. At the end, I was able to see only the silhouette of a stuffed elephant seal in the dark, but when they shone a light on it, even though I was an adult, I freaked out. lol I think it's even more enjoyable than visiting during the day. (Translated by Google) What a wonderful collection! I was overwhelmed. I'm so happy to be able to see such a wide range of exhibits in Tsuyama without having to travel all the way to the faraway museum in Ueno. I was surprised by the generous display of polar foxes and polar bears outside the museum, but upon entering, my anticipation grew even stronger to be greeted by Joseph? Patrasche? Of course, there are many rare exhibits, but there are just so many. There are so many highlights that it's hard to say which one is the signature exhibit. Even the museum's first director is on display (!). The nostalgic exhibition hall, housed in a former high school, is tastefully decorated with handwritten guides and explanatory boards, and the floorboards creak when you walk on them. Even today, the outside temperature in August was nearly 40°C, but the inside of the hall was chilly. The rooms, each with their own exhibit, are connected like a maze, and the strange little details are part of its charm. The chirping of cicadas can be heard in every room, and I thought it was just tasteful background music for summer vacation, but I was wrong! It was coming from between the gaps in the walls. It was a live performance... Times have changed, and it is no longer possible to obtain all these exhibits or to enjoy this romantic wooden architecture. I hope that it will continue to exist for a long time to come.

(Translated by Google) I visited in October 2024. This garden, centered around a pond, was apparently once the villa of the feudal lord of Tsuyama. It's well-maintained, but admission is free, and I saw many local residents strolling around. There were lotus flowers growing in the large pond, which I imagine would be incredibly beautiful during the flowering season. I wondered where the pond's water came from, and after searching for the source, I discovered that water was drawn in from an external waterway on the north side, flowing around a small stream within the garden before flowing into the large pond and then being discharged out the south side. I was impressed by how well-thought-out the garden was. The trees in the back were also impressive and well-maintained, and I personally found them more impressive than the pond. The entrance is adjacent to a school field, and on the day I visited, I could hear the voices of students practicing baseball. Rather than being a special place, it feels more like a relaxing spot in everyday life. It's only about a five-minute drive from Tsuyama Castle, so it's a good idea to visit both. The facility's parking lot is large enough to accommodate a few cars, but you can also use the city hall parking lot across the street from the entrance for free.

Personally, I'm happy that they have a decent amount of manga next to the drink bar. On the other hand, it is quite old and the facilities are generally old. Since it is located at the foot of Tsuyama Castle, depending on the room, you can see Tsuyama Castle from the room, and it is especially good that you can spend your time looking at Tsuyama Castle lit up at night. There are several restaurants within a short walk, so you won't have any trouble finding a meal, but there is also a restaurant on the 1st floor, so you can eat without having to go outside the hotel. There are several business hotels around the station, so they are popular and often have vacancies. There are also services like those mentioned above, so it is recommended for those who don't care about the oldness.

Breakfast is really bad.

(Translated by Google) The location, value for money, and service were excellent. The front desk staff were courteous and helpful both at check-in and check-out. The complimentary services were truly comprehensive. Since I was primarily interested in the free rice bowls for dinner, simply purchasing a salad and some edamame beans from a convenience store was enough for dinner. On this day, I chose curry and two rice bowls (a frozen kalbi rice bowl and a ginger pork rice bowl), both of which were delicious. The complimentary soft drink bar also had an alcohol button, offering highballs and sours. Sake was also available next to it. Other drinks available included stick drinks, tea bags, pouches of soup and clear soup, mini ramen, ochazuke (rice with tea), and bean snacks, making for excellent service. It was a shame there wasn't a water kettle. (This is quite popular!) There's also an izakaya attached to the hotel, and I was thinking of going there if I needed to drink more, but the loud, noisy voices from the early hours made it difficult to enter. I asked the front desk if they offered takeout, but they said they weren't sure because it's a separate company. In the end, I was satisfied with the free rice bowls and drinks, so I didn't go to the izakaya. I use this izakaya for breakfast. It's a buffet, so nearly half of the seats are used for cooking, so there aren't many seats, and depending on the timing, you might have to wait. When I stayed at Toyoko Inn Kurashiki, the breakfast area was in the lobby, but it was very small, so they provided take-out bento packs so I could eat in my room. I have fond memories of packing my lunch and enjoying a leisurely breakfast in my room, so if it continues to be crowded, I might consider staying there. Also, the bed in my room had a bouncy mattress, which I'm not good with. For the second time in my life, after Cuore Kurashiki Hotel, I fell off the bed because it bounced too much while turning over. It was high, so I hit my knee hard. I ended up with quite a bruise... The rental service was also comprehensive, so if they could also rent a bed guard or shock-absorbing mat for the floor, I would feel more comfortable using it next time. Thank you for your consideration.

If you're looking for a cozy spot to warm up during the chilly months, "とんこつ鶏ガラ醤油 ばり嗎 津山山北店" is an excellent choice. Let's go for ramen for the first time in a while ✨️ It's spacious with counter seats for one person and table seats for groups. Order tonkotsu soy sauce burai ramen and 5 gyoza using the touch panel. The bariuma ramen with pork bone soy sauce has a rich soup but is light and not heavy, making it very easy to eat. The chashu was also soft. The gyoza with crispy wings was piping hot and delicious. On the way home, I took out 6 pieces of fried chicken and went home. I tasted one freshly fried chicken, and it had a good seasoning and the meat was soft and delicious. Thank you for the meal. When you enter the store and are guided to the counter, there is a tablet in front of you, and you use it to order. It's not hard to understand, but I don't really like it. Although it's better than the ticket machine style at the entrance. I found tsukemen so I ordered the pork rice set. I was curious about the free pickle service next to the entrance, which was a little far away, but I passed on it. The fish powder works well for the dipping sauce. The noodles are medium thick. With this set, leave half of the pork rice for the dipping sauce. I stopped by the Tsuyama Yamakita branch of Bariuma (the character for horse with a mouth character) when I was working, and I remembered that I had never been there before. It was lunchtime, but there were a lot of student customers. I wonder if there is a high school nearby. Looking at the menu, the basic "Bariuma Ramen" is made by combining chicken bones and pork bones, and they also have miso-based ramen, tsukemen, and tanmen, which is a limited-time menu item? This time I had the basic Bariuma Ramen. There were hardly any condiments on the counter, but there were some pickles on the table near the entrance that could be used as condiments. Pickled cucumbers, pickled Chinese cabbage, and something a bit different, pickled garlic sprouts in kimchi (probably the most popular). So. I tried the soup that was served to me, but the soup, which is made by combining chicken bones and pork bones, somehow didn't have a crispy taste. They added some kimchi-marinated garlic sprouts as a condiment, and I guess that's about what you'd expect... The noodles were thin and straight, and there was nothing particularly worth mentioning about them, but it felt like the soup was a letdown. It's a shame. If you're looking to eat this kind of ramen in Tsuyama city, I think you'd be much happier at Zundoya, near the Edion Tsuyama store. There were a fair number of customers there while I was eating, so I can't rule out the possibility that the quality of the soup when I visited... After ordering, you can enjoy a pickle buffet in the pickle section, but due to COVID-19, there were no tongs, so I hesitated about whether to use one chopstick or six for about six types of pickles. This time, I think I ordered the "Barikata" seasoned egg. The restaurant was busy, so I calmly ordered without looking at the menu... (;´∀`) I think it was 879 yen plus the 110 yen seasoned egg? I'm not sure. I ordered medium-thin straight noodles, "Barikata," which had a firm core. I don't think the noodles were slimy around the edges. The broth was pork bone-based, and the "Barikata" version was described as a rich back fat type, and the thick soup had a strong garlic flavor. (On the way home, I was surprised by my own garlic smell while wearing a mask, lol.) The char siu was cut thick and was quite filling. I forgot to take a picture of the seasoned egg after it was cracked open. On the counter, I think there was garlic, chili pepper, pepper, gyoza sauce, and chili oil. I would have liked sesame and pickled ginger (personally). My companion ordered bari shio and gyoza. He didn't taste it, but he ate it all. When are gyoza supposed to be served? I somehow imagined them before the ramen, or at the same time? But after the ramen, I can't help but wonder, "Maybe they've forgotten?" I couldn't help but ask the waiter, and they said, "We're cooking them now, so it will take a little longer," but wouldn't it have been better if they'd said, "It may take some time" when ordering, or, when serving the ramen, "The gyoza will be ready a little later"? Is it just me? But my stomach was full, so that's good. There's a display of figurines inside the store, which might be fun for anime fans★ (Original)

I thought it was frozen food. The noodles are thick for tonkotsu ramen. The ones I thought were the most delicious were pickled Chinese cabbage and pickled cabbage. The common pickled mustard greens is good, but this one is amazing! Ramen, gyoza, extra egg, flavored egg with a coupon, chashu pork, green onions, all for 1200 yen. expensive! The store is beautiful, so I think 1000 yen is fine. It looks like it will cost 1500 yen to be full. I'm giving it 3 stars because the cost performance is poor. The next day, when I realized I needed both my parking ticket and the complimentary voucher when I left the parking lot, I returned to the hotel and explained the situation. The staff insisted, "The guest lost it," and were extremely rude and repeated this repeatedly. They didn't even check the ticket. When they realized we were foreigners, and the staff were probably not Japanese, their attitude became even worse and they blamed us for everything. In fact, we could have contacted the police and they didn't give us the ticket. There were three members, a junior who was retiring and a junior who was being coached by his junior. I went there for the first time, and it was crowded with customers, probably because it was a Sunday. It’s nice to be lively︎👍 I requested a box seat with a sunken kotatsu. It's very spacious and nice ✨ It's a sunken kotatsu so you don't have to worry about cramping your legs when you sit 😊 Meat right away~✨Ookaku and tongue are a must!! ️ Let's have both thin and thick slices of tongue ❤️ Let's compare the tastes of giant giant squid and regular giant squid! ️ I also eat my favorite heart, top horumon, wagyu yukhoe, cold noodles, and my junior has a large bowl of rice and oki kimchi. The thinly sliced tongue cooks quickly, so you can just pop it into pieces ❤️ It has a nice texture and is delicious ✨ The thickly sliced tongue is filling and fills your mouth with happiness... ✨ Both are delicious ❤️ But my favorite is the thick slice. 🥰 Comparing the eating of the upper oukaku and the ookaku, the upper ookaku has firmer flesh and is juicy when you bite into it ❤️ The flesh of the ookaku is soft ❤️ The regular ookaku is quite delicious ❤️ I have added 2 servings of regular Okaku ✨ The upper horumon was also soft, plump, and delicious. I'm feeling pretty hungry now. Cold noodles are refreshing and easy to eat ✨ I ate them easily. Junior has egg soup. There was quite a lot in it, but I ate it all. The tongue felt thinner than I've seen it anywhere else (I like things that are thin, so this is fine) It's a popular restaurant, so I made a reservation by phone in advance, but this is the first time I've ever been asked how long I plan to spend eating (and what time I plan to leave) at the time of making the reservation. . I don't think the price is reasonable (though it's not too expensive), so if you want to eat cheaply and a lot, it might not be the place for you. No lemon juice (with cut lemon) There is only one type of sauce, and it is the only one that is poured onto the plate from the beginning. Rail museum
The Tsuyama Manabi Railway Museum is a charming rail history museum housed in a 1936 train depot, showcasing vintage locomotives and scale models. It offers a unique experience for train enthusiasts, with live trains coming in and out of the main railway station providing an exciting backdrop. Visitors can enjoy a miniature show depicting the daily life of a train, particularly captivating for kids. The museum also features an audio tour in English and boasts a model railroad and gift shop.
This is a fantastic museum, although it's small but there are enough trains to spend some good time there. Actually it also has a great view of the main railway station with live trains coming in and out of the station. There is also a miniature show at designated timings (last is at 3pm) of the daily life of a train, which is fascinating especially for kids. The tickets is a unique gift in itself!

Choboji, also known as the Hydrangea Temple, is a beloved spot among locals and visitors alike. During the rainy season, around 3,500 hydrangeas bloom on the temple grounds, creating a stunning sight. The temple's stone and stucco walls provide a picturesque backdrop for photography enthusiasts who flock to capture the beauty of the hydrangeas in full bloom.

The car navigation system told me to pass a nearby park and turn left, but that would take me near the graves behind the temple and I wouldn't be able to reach the parking lot. If you're going to the Tahoto Pagoda by car, that's the route to take. (You can also walk to the Tahoto Pagoda.) To find the parking lot, go straight ahead as indicated by the sign, and you'll find a large, private parking lot on your right. Some of the hydrangeas were still blooming, but they were starting to bloom. It was a coincidence, but I was able to meet an owl. I was surprised that it was located at the foot of a mountain in the city area. I felt like I had received some kind of blessing from the temple. However, there are many other customers during the hydrangea season, which makes it difficult to take photos. There are restrooms that are open to the public, but they are a bit open, so if you are interested, it is best to wait until you are done before visiting. The Tsuyama Archives of Western Learning is housed in a striking red brick building that was once a bank. During the Edo era, Tsuyama was a hub for scholars interested in Western Learning, particularly Dutch medical science. The museum showcases books and artifacts related to this field, including valuable documents like 'Kaitai Shinsho' and 'Vaccination License.'
you can learn mamy stories about Japanese old study against foreign study after opening international trade. Japanese national isolation has last for 200+years during Edo era. It was time when other international country has great development . This museum was built to commemorate great schlors who work for local lord of Tsuyama. (Translated by Google) Last time I went for lunch, I saw the snacks page on the menu, so I went back around 6pm. They had a good selection of alcohol and the snacks were delicious 🤗 I was able to relax. The draft beer was cold! They had a wide selection of shrimp snacks. 100 yen plum wine! It was delicious. The staff were also efficient 🤩🤩🤩 I had a great time. I'd like to come here again next time for a leisurely drink 😊😊😊. The price was reasonable too. ☺️☺️☺️ They had a wide selection of snacks to go with the drinks, the air conditioning worked well, and it was very comfortable, so I've been hooked on it lately. (Translated by Google) Hello! It's Shinshin♪ I went to a restaurant just a short walk from JR Tsuyama Station in Okayama Prefecture! It's called "Tomato & Onion Tsuyama Ekimae Branch." The interior had an antique feel! It seems like a great place for both solo diners and families♪ ▪︎Western Meal Set ¥1,000- ・French fries ・Bacon ・Wiener sausage ・Scrambled eggs ・Salad ・Bread ※All-you-can-drink, includes drink bar and soup bar Isn't this set, drinks, soup, and even all-you-can-eat rice and curry for just ¥1,000 amazing?! I don't think you'll find such a great deal very often (o^^o) Thank you for meeting me♪ (Original) はろー!

(Translated by Google) Used it for breakfast on a holiday. It's inside the hotel, but visitors can use it too. In that case it's 1000 yen (tax included). Even if you stay overnight it's just 1000 yen more than the accommodation fee, so it's the same. This price includes curry, a soup bar, and a drink bar, so it's great value for money. The black curry in particular was delicious, with well-cooked beef and a concentrated flavour. It gets crowded on holidays, but I think it's worth a visit.

There is no indication anywhere of what time they serve them until. The sets that come with rice and other dishes are different during lunch hours than at other times. Dinner sets with rice and other dishes are expensive.

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Kura Sushi is a contemporary sushi establishment with affordable prices. The cost of each dish is determined by its color, adding an interesting twist to the dining experience. This conveyor belt sushi restaurant offers ample parking and seating, although it can get busy during peak hours on weekends, resulting in potential waits. The sushi itself is both reasonably priced and of high quality. In addition to their delectable selection of sushi options, they also serve delightful mango shaved ice desserts.
Cheap and great sushi. I also love their mango shaved ice

(Translated by Google) I feel like the size of the toppings at Kura Sushi is a little on the small side. That's fine, but the limited edition crab nigiri is very different from the sample in the photo. You can get Nijisanji goods and get 5x Rakuten points, so the service is great!

(Translated by Google) It gets very busy on weekends, holidays, and long weekends, so reservations are essential. The parking lot is fairly large, so it's easy to get in and out. The sushi 🍣 on the conveyor belt seems to be scattered, and the toppings vary in size. I think the quality of the products offered has declined compared to before. The soup dishes are not that great.

(Translated by Google) I thought the price was cheap, including a set menu with kids' menu, french fries, salad and drink bar. The drink bar also had a wide variety of options! The soup bar was not the type that you pour yourself, but the same system as the drink bar. I felt that the dishes were generally quite strong in flavor. I think the black pepper was strong. What bothered me was that the inside of the store was dimly lit, there were no wet towels, and you order by scanning a QR code on your smartphone, which I thought would be difficult for people who are not good with machines. There were buttons to press on the table, so maybe you could call a staff member to order...

(Translated by Google) I went to eat Joyful Burger. Even though he seemed busy and was moving quickly, when he took my order, he took my time and explained things with a smile, which left a good impression. Ordered a Joyful Cheeseburger and fries. I thought, ``Wow, these tomatoes are lined up next to each other, they're so hard to eat,'' but when I put them in the bag, they didn't fall apart and were surprisingly easy to eat.I was impressed and thought, ``I see. It's all calculated.''( ^^) The taste was amazing and had the authentic taste of a burger shop run by an individual rather than a burger chain! The buns look delicious. I like these buns better than Mac or Moss. The onion rings that come with it are also delicious! Can you make this a single side menu item? I'm full with this and the potatoes. I'm satisfied ♡ (Original)
