Scenic spot
Angel Road is a stunning natural attraction located on the southwestern tip of Shodoshima near Tonosho Port. It consists of a 500-meter-long sandbar that emerges at low tide, connecting mainland Shodoshima to three small islands. Legend has it that walking hand-in-hand with your partner across Angel Road will strengthen your bond. Nearby, visitors can enjoy the panoramic views from The Hill of Promise.
Pay attention to when the tide is out. You can get the information at a big souvenir shop right next to the pier. There is a car park near the Angel Road but it’s not free. Walk up to the little hill and you will be more amazed by the breathtaking views. The views were stunning at sunset.
Karen C — Google review
Really nice view and went there close to sunset and it was pretty amazing the place was rather crowded though but would still highly recommend going there. As the view is pretty stunning!
Lyon . — Google review
✨ A magical and romantic place ✨ Visiting Angel Road was an unforgettable experience. The sandy path appears during low tide, connecting several small islands and creating a unique scenery. The atmosphere is peaceful, perfect for a romantic walk or enjoying the sunset. There’s also a viewpoint with a bell where couples ring it for good luck in love, which makes the place even more special. Make sure to check the tide schedule to walk the entire path. A must-see spot in Shodoshima, full of natural beauty and romance. 🌊💫
EryArt 3 — Google review
When we arrive the sun was already going down and the sunset view was amazing. The tide was already rising but there is still people trying to cross over. ( pls becarful if you do but I don’t recommend 🫣) There is a car park near by but not a lot of space tho.
Shelley L — Google review
We made a beeline straight for this place as soon as we got off the ferry, and were glad we took our car. The bus wait seemed a bit slow. We missed the tide around sunset, and it wasn’t too crowded when we went. I was able to fly my drone here and capture some beautiful footage of the rock formations around here. There was a couple that was getting wedded that day, and most people edged out of the way to let them take their wedding pictures. Most folks descend down the steps to here, and come straight to the beach area to take pictures of the “island”. But there also steps to the left that are a bit discreet; they lead up to a series of stairs that give you a nice panoramic view of the island and there is a lover’s bell up on the top as well.
Vantageshots — Google review
Wonderful experience, check the low tide times before you go (your window is 2 hours before to 2 hours after for a total of 4 hours). Cool to see the flora and fauna that clearly were in the ocean water hours ago. Crossing the sand bar and back is picturesque and can be done in less than 30 minutes. Bonus trip up the stairs near the entrance leads you to a bell you can ring for love!
Angela C — Google review
Took Olive bus no. 6 here. As it was low tide, we could walk on the road or rather the beach. We walked till the end where we saw past visitors had hang blessings notes on the branches of the tree. It was a nice stroll on the beach. After that we headed to Yumi Katsura Lover's Sanctuary where we could ring the bell and looked down on Angel road
GAN Y — Google review
Nice walk with pretty view; it’s such a peaceful place that you feel like you can spend hours just walking / enjoying the view. It seems to be known as lovers’ sanctuary. There is a little hill next to the “angel road” that you can climb and enjoy the view. It gets crowded as it gets close to the time which the “angel road” will appear. There are quite a few car parking areas within 5-10 mins walk.

Kasaneiwa, located atop a mountain on the western end of Shodoshima, is a collection of stacked boulders with stunning sea views. The landmark is enshrined as a sacred object at Takase Ishi Shrine and requires a steep climb up a path with stairs and ropes. Visitors should be prepared for narrow roads leading to the parking lot and a challenging 15-minute climb.
Kasane-iwa offers a truly stunning view from the west side of Shodoshima. The first part of the hike from the parking lot below is just stairs. After you get to the little shrine halfway up, the path gets a little rougher. Still, this part is not too long and there's a sturdy fence you can keep your balance on, so it's both safe and relatively easy. If you're on Shodoshima, I warmly recommend climbing Kasane-iwa both for the exercise and the views—it's a truly beautiful place (:
Njål A — Google review
Quick to visit, although getting to the top requires climbing a few rocks. Great views all the way.
Karri H — Google review
Amazing view. Just be aware that once you reach Kasaneiwafudo, there are no more steps from then onwards and it gets very steep, so be sure to wear proper footwear (I was wearing sandals 😅). But the view was well worth it!
Mark X — Google review
It’s a tiny street to drive up, lots of stairs to walk up then climb up some rocks. Be ready. Locals told me if you get to the top, you can stay healthy for a year. I think you have to be healthy to get to the top! It’s nice view and feels good there
Takako U — Google review
Very tough climb, yeah,,, this is climb. Take care of climbing. Very beautiful view in the top! Only 3-4 cars can get parked.
I T — Google review
Not only the rocks but also such an amazing view spot. Needed to stay there to look around the view, and to think about the process to make these rocks stacked like the toy blocks! You need to spend climb up a bit for like 15min, but definitely recommend it!

Bodies of Water
Dofuchi Strait, also known as Tsuchibuchi Strait, holds the Guinness World Record for being the narrowest strait globally. It's a picturesque location that offers a glimpse of traditional Japan. Visitors can explore the charming Tonosho Town and its maze-like streets, which have been featured in anime and movies like 'Teasing Master Takagi-san.' The area is rich in history and natural beauty, making it perfect for leisurely strolls.
I had no idea this place existed when I first arrived. When I learned about it, I was very pleasantly surprised! Shodoshima, as it turns out, is actually 2 islands: Shodoshima and Maejima. At the point shown the videos, it’s only 9.93 meters across, making it the most narrow navigable strait in the world—that fact is registered in the Guinness Book of world records.
The D — Google review

This well-maintained Buddhist temple boasts an elevator and offers visitors an opportunity to appreciate the awe-inspiring vistas from the chest of Budha.
Very lovely place, well cared for. The views are amazing 👏

A big statue of Daikannon. You can visit the inside of the statue. There are many Bhuddhist-art pieces which calm your mind. There are also viewing spots on the top. There are a lot of parking spots but the access road is on maintenance so it might be difficult to drive.

Lovely staff and a great vibe at this temple. Climbing up the statue was amazing and just a great deal of knowledge and beauty inside as well

Nestled in the picturesque Chōshi Valley on Shodoshima Island, the Chōshi Valley Monkey Kingdom Natural Zoo is a delightful haven for wildlife enthusiasts. This enchanting sanctuary is home to around 500 Japanese macaques that roam freely in their natural habitat, allowing visitors to witness these playful primates up close. The experience becomes even more interactive as guests can feed the monkeys soybeans directly from their hands for just 100 yen, creating memorable moments of connection with these charming creatures.
Highly recommend, Saru interactions everywhere :) Please make effort to climb/walk to observation viewpoint too, it is one of best views on island
Chiaki W — Google review
Surprisingly good, we don't normally like these things, animal welfare. But the monkey's are free to roam all around the mountains in this area. They like being fed at the parks so they come at key times. Observation deck was a great spot
Jennifer E — Google review
We fed lots of monkeys there, they are so cute.
Li Y — Google review
Perfect place to meet with our ancestor in funny way. You can feed them too :-)
Tanmay E — Google review
For those with kids. It’s about a 5-10 mins walk to the kingdom. There’s also a cabin to feed the monkeys safely. The staff are very aware of the monkey’s behaviors and give advice to visitors accordingly to prevent incidents. For those with better endurance. Walk 20 mins to the top of the mountain for some mind bending views of the area.
CLX C — Google review
it is a small zoo full of wild monkeys so need to be careful. Do not stare at them otherwise they might attack you. Don't run and don't play with monkeys. However, it is a good experience for everyone. Also, they didn't advertise it but they have the best view points in the whole island.
John P — Google review
I recommend to go all the way up the hill to have great way around Shodoshima.

Fed by fresh water from Mt. Yubune, these terraces offer a picturesque view best enjoyed in the lush greenery of early to late summer. This hidden gem provides a refreshing escape from major cities and offers visitors the chance to explore local produce while enjoying the serene scenery.
Great place to see the nature (terraced rice field) and culture (old kabuki theatre) of Shodoshima island. It is also a place where the art work will be installed during the Setouchi Trienale so it is worth a trip.

Shodoshima Olive Park is a Mediterranean-style park and olive grove that offers visitors a taste of Greece in Japan. The park features an abundance of olive trees, a Greek windmill, and greenhouses reminiscent of Santorini. It was even used as the filming location for the live-action version of Kiki's Delivery Service. Visitors can explore hiking paths through the olive trees and enjoy stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea and its islands.
I strongly recommend driving on Shodosbima because the island is big and it will waste much time if you take public transport. This park is good. It’s free of charge and there are many olive trees. You could pick leaves and make bookmarks using the leaves at the souvenir shop. People could find the heart-shaped leaves but I couldn’t :( You could take an instagrammable pictures with a broom provided by the park near the windmill. There is a restaurant on the second floor of the building. The food was fine.
Karen C — Google review
If you like studio ghibli then it’s a must go. The windmill is the highlight of the place. So many people taking photo there. After parking you need to go to the museum, they have a wall where they hang the famous Kiki broom. But sometime you need to wait since many took it for photo. After taking the break you can then head to the windmill. The olive oil ice cream was good also specially after all the jumping 😆😆😆.
Shelley L — Google review
tbh it’s frustrating to walk uphill under scorching sun, from the bus stop. it’s a nice olive park tho, big square with art installations and the windmill that everyone is crazy about. big souvenir shop, resto and stuff, even a shrine!! also a tiny museum and noodles place along the road. i spent 3hrs there, but i think most people left faster than i did. once is enough for me; i won’t go again if no one drives me uphill.
Beergal H — Google review
An olive garden with a lot of photogenic spots. There are the oldest olive tree in Japan, a windmill, a lovely house and a statue of Athena. There is a large souvenir shop with various olive products from snack, food to cosmetics.
Sarasate E — Google review
You can borrow the broom for free to pretend to be Kiki in Ghibli Kiki's Delivery Service~ Please also go to lookout~
Sam S — Google review
Though I am not a big fan of theme park, this scenic olive-theme park was definitely worth a visit. Its herb garden, museum, and olive farm were both beautiful and educational. Potential visitors need to budget their time accordingly as the buses run infrequently (especially in the late afternoon)!

Komame Shokudo is a charming cafe located in a renovated old private house nestled in the mountains of Shodoshima. The cafe offers breathtaking views of the surrounding rice terraces, making it a picturesque spot for visitors. One of their popular menu items is the Rice Terrace Onigiri Set, made with rice grown in the nearby terraces, providing not only delicious food but also an Instagram-worthy experience.
Parked at the public gym and then walk over. Arrived at 11.30am where there wasn’t much people. More customers started coming in around noon. Food tasted like a comforting home cooked meal. Shrimp was extremely fresh and shrimpy. Everything was lightly fried and not too greasy. Rice was delicious which was made extra special by the lightly seasoned seaweed. Wish they had the seaweed for sale. Fish and vegetables were fresh. Somen was light and refreshing. Even the side dishes were executed perfectly. Wanted to purchase the muffins and jumped on the opportunity when they had a flash sale. We got chocolate chip almonds and cranberry rum raisin for 200yen each which tasted fluffy and amazing! Staff were welcoming. After taking our orders, they showed us around and let us choose our seats. We chose to sit indoors as the farmers were burning things outside. There was a sink to wash our hands since there was fried fish.
Mark F — Google review
Beautiful location to have lunch. They cook local foods but other than that it’s nothing special about food. They use tables and chairs like the ones used at elementary schools so they are too small for adults. No air conditioning here so it’s so hot in summer.
Hiroki I — Google review
I wish my stomach had more capacity for both the onigiri set and the beef hamburger! SO SO SO GOOD! When you bite into the burger, the fresh and crisp vegetables, juicy and flavourful beef patty, and fragrant bun all go very well together. Onigiri set was very well done too!
Karyn W — Google review
Simple wholesome onigiri set and yummy burger that we had as a takeaway. They have a pretty efficient system. Came here at 2 plus and as they couldn’t sit us as they were closing soon, asked us to come back at 3 pm to collect our food for takeaway. Works well as we have a nice 30 mins to walk around and take pictures at the nearby Love in Shodoshima artwork amongst the rice paddy fields.
Lovey L — Google review
Wonderful little cafe. We stopped on for a bite on the way to see the rice fields. It was a little crowded so the staff asked if we would eat on the terrace. But they were so worried we would get cold they kept bringing out blankets and hot water bottles. It was very kind of them. Enjoyed my Ice cream. It was soy sauce flavored?? but still delicious!

Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Studio, located in Shodoshima, is a picturesque vintage-style village that served as the set for the iconic film 'Twenty-Four Eyes.' The novel, written by Tsuboi Sakae in 1952, tells the story of a schoolteacher and her twelve first-grade students during World War II. The movie studio features a traditional fisherman's house and a wooden elementary school, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's past.
This is a lovely.place to visit, even if you are not familiar with the film. It is like visiting a folk museum, as there are well curated displays of artefacts as well as a stream with fish and sea cucumbers to spot. There is a good atmosphere and little cafes and restaurants dotted about. The staff in the gift shop were very kind as was the person on the ticket office. There is a boat service across the bay to the Shodoshima Olive Park and beach etc.

You need to pay to visit the site but I think it’s worth it. Very beautiful and relaxing. Some of the time they have tours coming in, so it’s abit crowded. Many place to take photos so if you like taking photo you must go. Many parking outside the site so no need to worry.

My wife really enjoyed some of the books which were based of some of the movie which were filmed here. If you are a historical japanese movie buff black and white movie etc you may have seen one or two that was filmed here. You can go into every building and see photos and articles from all the old movie. If you don't like old movies maybe not worth the visit
Rich R — Google review
Nice scenery but the building and expo are a littéralement bit messy. I would have expect more fous on cinéma world. Many housse just host shop selling unrelated art stuff. Maybe good for a quick stop (but ticket is 1000 yens per adult.

Beautiful and nostalgic place to visit. I bought also a lot of souvenirs. The shop keepers were sooo nice to me. 🩷👍🏻👍🏻

I only stayed outside as I only got 15 mins before the bus comes. I need to catch this bus as my luggage storage ends at 4:30pm. It looks pretty good from the outside, I manage to take a peak from the gaps of the gate, inside seem to have the houses you see in a samurai movie. Visited on 1 Apr 2025

This place exceeded my expectations… admittedly it was a gorgeous day to see the coast and buildings, but a fascinating spot to learn about early Japanese film making and culture. The coffee shop has Italian sodas which hit the spot in the 35 degree heat! The carp and cod to feed in the river are also huge!!!
Julie M — Google review
An old style Japanese film studio. Has some sets and a museum you can visit and walk through. It’s small but if you’re in Shodoshima you didn’t come for large scale things. This is a fun place to walk around. Super cheap admission price. Standard Japanese gift shop for you to shop at inside too.

The Marukin Soy Sauce Museum, a former soy sauce factory on Shodoshima Island, offers educational displays and a shop where visitors can even try soy sauce ice cream. Established in 1904, the museum showcases the island's 400-year history of soy sauce production. While touring the massive indoor space with exposed wooden beams, guests can learn about the process of making soy sauce and see vats of beans and malt percolating.
Learned a lot about soy sauce in this museum! Good smell everywhere and delicious soy sauce ice cream is a must for the visit:)
Ilykwan — Google review
Short and simple museum, but very good value as you get a complimentary bottle of soy sauce plus 100¥ discount for the shop. The soft serve soy sauce ice cream is really good. Worth walking up the road to the nearby sake brewery and bakery, they're really good.
Holly P — Google review
We were disappointed in this museum. There is no interactivity at all, just exhibition items. We were hoping to be able to see the soy sauce production but there is nothing like that here. The soy sauce soft serve ice cream was tasty tho.
Crina B — Google review
It is a beautiful place full of aroma and history. You need to pay a small fee to enter the museum but you’ll find plenty of informations on the soy sauce factory process inside. Worth a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. The soft serve could be a tiny bit more flavourful ! If you visit when there is a tourist bus incoming, it can be crowded inside.
Courrier F — Google review
Interesting experience to visit a soy sauce factory. It gives you information on the production of soy sauce and the history of the industry. It also offers your to try different types of soy sauce (or other related products) before buying. And the soy sauce ice cream is a ‘must-try’.
Ty — Google review
Nice to stop by if you are in the island - it’s interesting to know how soy sauce has been made in old days. Soy sauce ice cream is sold at the small shop next to the museum which seems to be more popular than the museum itself. Some souvenirs are also available. Free parking available and the whole area smells like soy sauce.
Aya M — Google review
A great way to find out how soy sauce is made! In the museum there were English explanations under the Japanese, so even though I can read kanji fairly well I felt like I understood the process better 😉 We couldn’t tour the factory but we did see the vats of beans and malt percolating. And the smell was something else!!

Olive Beach is a delightful destination on the island, perfect for those looking to soak in both sun and scenery. This popular beach features convenient amenities such as parking and a visitor information center, making it easy to plan your day. While the water may not be crystal clear, its long yet narrow swimming area offers plenty of space for relaxation. Visitors can enjoy nearby beach houses during peak season that provide showers and food options, along with free foot showers available for everyone.
While waiting for the olive bus, we ventured to the beach. Not crowded, only a few visitors. Just before the beach lies the Olive Navi museum, highlighting the history of olive growing in Shodoshima.

quiet weekdays, busy weekends!! it’s separated into like 3 parts by tiny bridges, you can choose your fav. the water is crystal clear. with vending machines, parking, restaurants (the one called SUP RESORT offers SUP learning), info centre, public toilet.

A peaceful and beautiful beach in Shodoshima. When I visited, it wasn’t crowded, so it was easy to enjoy the stunning sunset and incredible scenery. The warm waters are perfect for a refreshing swim in summer, and paddle boards make the experience even more fun and unforgettable. 🌅🏖️✨

It's a beautiful beach with several cafés/shacks nearby. There are snorkels, tents and floaties for rent. However, the swimming area doesn't have a net so it's a bit dangerous. There were multiple jellyfish and a sea urchin. I wish they would install a net so that swimming could be safer.
Mia M — Google review
A popular crowded beach with adjacent parking and visitor information center. The water isn't very clear and the swimming area is long but narrow. No lifeguard on duty. Beach houses are available during peak season with rental showers, food, and for-pay other amenities. Free showers are available to wash your feet. Wheelchair accessible toilet available.
Kevin M — Google review
It's ok, a bit small, dirty like an my other beach. It gets deep quite quickly so really need to keep an eye on the kids. You can rent and do water activities like SUP, yoga, banana boat and so on. There are two restaurants by the beach. There is also a free parking with restrooms. No shower but a an small water faucet to rinse.
Marck — Google review
Beach is quite nice, I don't know swimming is allowed or not here. The scenic view really give you a mental freshness. Car parking is available here.

Nestled on Shodoshima Island, the Shodoshima Olive Garden is a delightful olive-oil plantation that offers visitors an enchanting experience. This picturesque park features a charming gift shop, a cozy restaurant serving delectable dishes, and even a playground for families to enjoy. One of its standout attractions is the replica of a Greek windmill, which has become famous among fans of Studio Ghibli's 'Kiki's Delivery Service,' as it served as one of the filming locations.
Great restaurant with delicious food. Only complaint is small portions, but I'm a "big lad" so... Amazing views too, and you can take a stroll through the orchard (? grove?) with some great views (also visible from the restaurant). Lots of people taking photos to mimic Kiki's Delivery Service too. ! If you want to do the "My Oil" oil blending experience, you need to book ahead!

This was a good olive garden along a main road on the island. There was a free carpark outside. The entrance was a souvenir shop. Commodities were neatly displayed, and the price was average. Staff were polite. Toilets were located on one side of the building.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Shodoshima, Nishi-no-taki Ryusui-ji Temple is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its stunning views and serene atmosphere. The journey to this temple can be quite an adventure, especially for those unaccustomed to steep and narrow mountain roads. As you navigate these winding paths, you'll find yourself rewarded with breathtaking scenery that unfolds as you approach the temple grounds.
If you can spare the time, definitely worth it. I'm not sure how long it took me to walk up to the temple, but it was a surprisingly easy walk, along paved roads the entire way. Gorgeous views from the top. No goshuin, though. Chōshōji temple, down in town, does the goshuin for this temple, I'm told.

RestleA offers an incredible pasta dish and locally sourced olive oil served with bread. The restaurant is popular, so there might be a wait, but the experience is worth it. Koyomi is a popular dining spot on the island that offers delicious and healthy meals. It's advisable to make reservations in advance, as it can get quite busy. So happy to have been introduced to this place. I came last week for a Shoyu tasting event. I will definitely remember this restaurant for the rest of my life as well as the travel to Shodoshima!!!

It is one of the best meals you can get on the island for sure. Sadly, you will need to book a table beforehand. You can try your luck and go without one but I would recommend reserving. Lunch is reasonable but diner can be a little bit expensive. The food was tasteful and healthy! At least, it felt healthy. Perfect seasoning and the rice was really good! I regret not getting the national soup for Japan: the miso soup. But it is alright. We ordered some drinks from the menu. Personally, I went for the Daidai jus. A sort of citrus it is said. It was refreshing! Very refreshing! Was it the acidity? Or it might have been the spiciness of the soda they had to the cocktail! I drove so I couldn’t try any Japanese sake, but it seems they have a good selection of those on the menu. You will find here the atmosphere of a classic Japanese home. Yes, it felt like you were in the dining room of a Japanese house: a machiya like room. The lighting was deemed, a little bit dark for my taste but it was very much a relaxing place. You can have a glimpse of the sea or Shikoku from far away, all that seating at your table. The service was fast. We would have liked to have some dessert but it was sold out! Well, again, better to reserve to not miss the opportunity to taste a Japanese island dessert.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by during my trip to Shodoshima. I was wandering around without any particular sightseeing plans when I came across a flyer for a "walking tour." When I contacted them via email, they contacted me immediately and I was able to participate in the tour. (500 yen per person, 1 drink included) Since it was the off-season, we were the only group, but we used panels to explain the history of Shionosato, the story up to now, and a guide to the brewery. He guided me carefully! It was very interesting and I learned a lot. They were kind enough to take photos, and it was fun to talk to them about various things that suited the visitors. After the tour, we were able to enjoy coffee and buy souvenirs at the stylish cafe attached to the shop. It's been a few years since it was renovated, so it's very nice. If I ever go to Shodoshima again, I would like to stop by. (Translated by Google) Visited on honeymoon. The main store is a tsukudani shop, selling souvenirs from Shodoshima. There is also a cafe where you can eat ``Tsukudani ice cream''🌳Perfect as a gift/souvenir. The newly renovated store was designed like a rebuilt old folk house and was beautiful 🌳 My friend who moved to Shodoshima was working here, so I gathered tourist information here (local attractions, alcohol, soy sauce, etc.), went out, and enjoyed the rest of my stay.🌳Salesperson Please give him a shout!
