Chuson-ji, a prominent Buddhist temple in Hiraizumi Town, was established in the early 12th century by Fujiwara no Kiyohira. It is considered a hub of Buddhist culture and houses the renowned Konjikido, the first structure designated as a Japanese national treasure. The Sankozo Museum within its grounds exhibits thousands of historical artifacts.
The museum and the hall that need ticket. If you are there and just walk around (plenty of things to see) you don’t have to pay the ticket. Anyway, the museum and the hall are worth the price you pay and please support the temple by purchasing the ticket. You can spend 1 hour easily here if not more. The temple ground is quite huge. The souvenir shop offer some good snack. There are samples. I tried and was hooked.
Julin L — Google review
A miniature, less crowded version of Kyoto when there there used to be significant trade between the two. The grounds are great to walk around - the big temple is free as are the shrines and the Noh stage (check schedule for performances). The golden hall and new museum require a ticket- well worth it!
Liz H — Google review
Nice preservation and restoration of the golden temple, which is housed inside and behind glasses. One can imagine its full of light and hope when it was first established. No photo inside the building and take the time to observe all the fine details.
Gus C — Google review
Beautiful location and the grounds are massive. The gold pavilion is a neat site to see (though photography is not allowed).
Josh D — Google review
Beautiful and historical place by Fujiwara family. It’s well-maintained. You can go around with a stroller from the parking lot, and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere with greenery. Konjikido is also excellent.

8/Apr/2025; visited around 4pm closed to the closing time. Few rains; light people around the temple; so quite and peaceful moment. Ticket price 1000yen to view golden pavilion. I gave 4 stars coz no photo allowed both in museum and the gold pavilion; i think allow and ask for not using flash should be enough.
Antonio O — Google review
We came here hoping to see the autumn colors. There was just a tint of red. I am going to make this my yearly travel destination. It’s a jem among all shrines
Iva T — Google review
Beautiful nature walking to see the shrines. Calm and peaceful feeling. Walking up and round the area is free. Only go in to see the golden ji needs the ticket ¥1000 per person.

Motsuji Temple is a serene Buddhist temple located in Hiraizumi Town, surrounded by a vast garden, a rock-studded lake, and low hills. It is considered a significant symbol of Hiraizumi culture and was built with the aspiration for peace and prosperity by Fujiwara Kiyohira. The temple holds cultural performances like the Kawanishi Nenbutsu Kenbai dance and Gokusui no En, which recreates a Heian period poetry game.
Beautiful garden and temples. Borrowed scenery from the mountains makes for a breathtaking sight. Fall colors are currently on display. Some historical information signs are also in English.

We visited the temple on Monday, just 30 minutes before closing. The ticket fee was 700 JPY per person, which felt a bit pricey for the experience. However, walking around the garden was peaceful and offered a calming atmosphere.
Sirimon W — Google review
A famous World Heritage garden representing the Pure Land of the late Heian period Motsuji Temple is said to have been founded by Jikaku Daishi in the early Heian period. Its garan (temple buildings) were constructed in the later years of Fujiwara no Motohira, a powerful clan leader in the late Heian period, and during the reigns of the second and third lords, Motohira and Hidehira, it boasted such scale and splendor that it was described as "unparalleled in our country." According to the Kamakura period history book "Azuma Zei," at the end of the 12th century, Motsuji Temple had as many as 40 halls and pagodas and 500 monks' quarters. However, it suffered repeated disasters from the Kamakura period through the Muromachi period, and all of the buildings were burned down. The Pure Land garden and the remains of the temple complex from the Heian period have been preserved in almost perfect condition, retaining the beauty of the former garden. The world that unfolds around Ohara Pond, which covers an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, is the Pure Land itself. The area around the pond and the island in the middle are paved with pebbles, and the sandbar creates a beautiful coastline with its soft curves, the hills made of large and small stones create a cliffscape, and the remains of the pond are used to draw water. Enjoy this precious and famous garden that conveys the ideas and techniques of Sakuki, Japan's oldest garden design manual, to the present day. Among them, Dejima, which looks like a rough shore, is on the southeastern shore of the pond and is considered one of the most beautiful sights. You will be captivated by the mystical appearance of the two-meter-tall standing stones rising out of the water. The bush clover flowers in the temple grounds are usually at their best from late September, and the autumn leaves are at their best from late October to mid-November. Motsuji Temple (Hiraizumi Town, Nishii District, Iwate Prefecture) Opening hours: 8:30~17:00 (November 5, 2025 - March 4, 2026: 8:30 - 16:30) No closed days for worship Admission fee: 700 yen, high school students 400 yen, elementary and junior high school students 200 yen [Hagi Festival] Thursday, September 25th to Monday, October 20th, 2025 A dance performance of Ennen no Mai and a special viewing of the main hall will be held. Autumn Leaves Festival: October 26th (Sun) - November 15th (Sat), 2025 Performances of Ennen no Mai and other events are planned.

Beautiful scenery and not crowded. Can enjoy the calm environment and relax. I visited twice here in summer and winter.

This was really beautiful because we had just visited Chuson-Ji temple and it was only a short walk over to this Motsuji temple. Again remarkable simplicity and beautiful especially with the snow all around. It is a Buddhist temple and is known for its beautiful Phoenix Hall which did not disappoint. The Phoenix Hall is a wooden structure built in the Amida style, which is characterized by its simple and elegant design. The hall is decorated with intricate carvings and paintings, and its interior is home to a large statue of Amida Buddha. The temple was founded in 998 by Fujiwara no Michinaga, a powerful courtier and politician during the Heian period (794-1185).

A very beautiful and scenic Buddhist temple that is designated as an UNESCO cultural/heritage site. There is a also a very large garden with a footpath that accompanies the temple and its buildings, which are placed around a scenic lake. The walk around the lake offers very different views depending on where you are on the path. You can see sites of where temples used to stand (some were burnt down in wars, etc.) as well as the ones that still remain to this day. During the walk around the lake on the footpath, there is a large bell in a belfry, a gentle stream that empties into the lake, as well as a set of strategically-placed rocks and stones made to resemble a landscape. Most definitely worth the entrance fee. Very highly recommended!

A gorgeous temple with a sprawling garden with various temples surrounding the pond. I got the chance to go on a beautiful day with blue skies, and even mid-August, you could already see the changing colors of the momiji to a fiery maroonish color and a warm, pleasant ochre. From the garden, you could peek through and see views of the town and mountains. Overall, a beautiful temple with a rich history.

There are old temples and beautiful garden. In forth Sunday of May, "Gokusui no En" is held at this temple. It reminds an events for old Japanese Nobility. There is nothing to shield the sun so that you need a blind or sunshade in summer.

Nestled in the breathtaking cliffs of Hiraizumi, Takkoku-no-Iwaya Bishamondō is a remarkable Buddhist temple that offers a unique blend of spirituality and natural beauty. This ancient site, carved into the rock face over a millennium ago, serves as a tribute to Bishamonten, the deity of warriors. Visitors can explore its intricately designed wooden structures while soaking in stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
It's a pretty cool spot to visit but it's something that you'd add on. You can actually walk up the steps and go into the shrine, there's also incense and candles you can light for a few hundred yen. When I first heard of a shrine in a cave I had a very different idea in mind but if you look underneath, at the support, it goes surprisingly deep into the rock.

This temple was very majestic, especially the one partially constructed within the mountain wall. If you are day tripping around Ichinoseki, I highly suggest stopping by. Parking is available for free just out front. It only takes you about 30 minutes to view it all.
Kurt F — Google review
Had a great time exploring the grounds and taking some photos. It’s a small place, but full of wonderful little nooks and crannies to look in. There was a Buddha carved i to the cliff face and a priest chanting when I visited. It’s an awesome place to visit.
Hannah B — Google review
It was beautiful particularly in the fall foliage season in early Nov. There were not many tourists as we came in early morning. The entry fee is 300 Yen. There’s a carpark opposite to it and it’s free.
So U — Google review
It's an interesting temple in a small but pretty garden. Honestly, rather disappointing. It looks like nothing special, and the interior is nothing to write home about, either. If you are by car, it may be worth your while to come here, but I would recommend you spend money on a taxi here and back.
Aleksander R — Google review
A rewarding location for taking photos on beautiful fall colors with traditional Buddhist temple backgrounds. The entrance fee is only 500 yens per person. Parking lot is right opposite to the temple and it’s free.
Ballchi C — Google review
A not-so-grand but still very beautiful shrine not to far from the more popular and crowded Hiraizumi area in Iwate Prefecture. The shrine is embedded into the natural rock wall, which intrudes into the interior of the shrine in a asthetically pleasing and beautiful way. The Bishamon deity is honored here and is an incredibly detailed and intricate statue. The small footpath/garden/lake outside is also very pretty and is a nice place to snap some pics during the right time of the day. Entrance fee is minimal, and a good-sized parking lot is available for free across the street if you come by car. Worth a look if you're in the area.
Shingo I — Google review
Pureland Buddhist Temple in the side of a mountain cave which was originally built in 801 AD. ☸️ Entry admission is affordable and there is also a relief of a Buddha carved into the side of the cliff there as well. While in Hiraizumi make sure you stop to see this often overlooked national historic wonder in vermillion and white. 🙏PLEASE 🙏 be respectful and observe that there is 🚫📸 *no photography inside* 🚫📸 the Temples as it is an active temple and a sacred space. 🙏 🙏🕊️🙏 @gabrielcraft.me

Sahara Glass Park is a unique attraction in Ichinoseki, showcasing a diverse collection of glass products from around the world, including those from Japan. Visitors can explore the spacious facility to find items for personal use or as gifts. Additionally, there's an opportunity to participate in glassmaking workshops by making reservations in advance. Adjacent to the parking area near Genbikei, this park offers not only glass crafts and accessories but also features a glass blowing workshop.
Don’t listen to the other comments! This place is very cool. My partner & I were hesitant to go here based on the comments, but it is extremely fun, cool and has so many unique items. We found so many amazing small gifts for loved ones and the art is mind blowing. Give yourself at least one hour but honestly I’d do more. There’s also a cute shop around the corner with nice ceramics but didn’t get the name of it.

Real rando glass place with a Showa vibe. There’s a gift store that sells a bunch of random glassware and it’s kind of cool. Check out the super retro cafe on the 2nd floor. Worth stopping by if you’re here, but not worth traveling here for it.

The rather dilapidated park was playing spooky music. With few visitors around, it had a sinister atmosphere—but precisely because of that, it carried a unique charm. I quite liked it.

Scenic spot
Genbikei Gorge is a stunning 2km ravine formed by the Iwai River's erosion, featuring tree-lined cliffs and white-water stretches. The well-maintained promenade offers a 45-minute exploration of the dynamic landscape. Notably, visitors can enjoy the sight of white water rushing over rocks and several waterfalls. During cherry blossom season, Tsuriyama hill is illuminated at night and offers breathtaking views during the day.
Beautiful scenery in different season. Visited in winter and part of walking path is closed but still worth the visit. Might visit again in autumn if possible.
Chung K — Google review
Nothing much to see here…. Don’t waste the ¥1000 return bus to go there. The walking path is by the road, not by the stream. The Dango shop is just at opposite side on the road, what’s the point of using the basket 🧺 fly over the dango while you just need to walk 3 mins over there 🤷🏻‍♀️. The shops and restaurants are closed by 4pm. The suspension bridge is closed at the winter time.
L — Google review
A very nice place that we did not expected to be that interesting. It's good for a road trip because there is a free car park around. The scene of the gorge and the park is nice but the disappointment is the Goranba-bashi Bridge is closed. Watching the Flying Dango is very satisfaction which was out of our through. There is also a Souvenir store around with a super nice owner. I have a enjoyable time there.
Chuen — Google review
The more energetic and masculine visit compared with the nearby Geibikei gorge. While the crowded area with where danggo is delivered via a basket was nice, it’s also worth taking a short walk around the area with less people. Found a hut at the other side of the bridge with a clear view of the gorge and few ppl in the area (though non-slip shoes are advised as getting to the hut involved some climbing down slippery steps - see map picture for directions).
Shihao F — Google review
Absolutely incredible! Beautiful gorge, very kind boatman, and a fun stop at the end. I won't spoil the whole experience but it is absolutely worth your time. If you are looking for the gorge with the zip line dumplings, that is Gimbikei gorge to the west of Ichinoseki.
Ian F — Google review
More spectacular than on photos. You'll have to experience the majesty of nature in person.
Oscar C — Google review
If you're a first time tourist in Japan & you don't speak Japanese, please give this one a miss. The buses from Ichinoseki to Genbikei are not frequent. We had a grumpy bus driver who got super angry with us more than once: moving off the seat to adjust sitting position and for the card tap not working and him needing to reset the machine to accept the Suica card tap. The gorge is not worth the challenge of figuring out how not to offend the locals. There was a long line in the hot sun for the flying Dango and that was the only activity there. The gorge is roped off so you can only see it from the bridge. Old cafe signs for places that had closed. The Sahara glass shop was pleasant enough but nothing that wowed us. The best thing about this side trip was the friendly souvenier store owner who spoke to us in English and was happy to be so helpful. There are far more amazing experiences to be had in Japan. We could have spent more time chilling in our guest house in Geibikei or walking around Ichinoseki itself.

Saito Udon Restaurant in Hiraizumi is a charming eatery located near the old road. It offers delectable udon and oyakodon dishes, served in a light and refined manner. The noodles are tender and flavorful, while the fluffy oyakodon with its delightful eggs has garnered praise from numerous patrons. Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Geibikei Gorge, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Ichinoseki Station. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Geibikei Gorge, located in Ichinoseki, Japan, is a breathtaking natural wonder famous for its striking cliffs and peaceful river vistas. The gorge spans approximately two kilometers and showcases towering limestone walls that soar up to 50 meters high. Visitors can partake in a serene boat ride along the Satetsu River, where traditional flat-bottomed boats glide through the tranquil waters, providing a unique vantage point of the verdant landscape and rock formations.
This boat experience comes highly recommended! The boat itself is larger than expected and kept in good condition. The staff are excellent; they provide informative explanations about the area and keep passengers entertained. The total trip is well-structured: 30 minutes of sailing out, a 20-minute stop for a walk (which flies by!), and 30 minutes for the return sail. Along the entire route, the scenic views, ambient sounds, and atmosphere are incredibly beautiful. A highlight is the return trip when the staff sing a lovely song detailing the four seasons of Geibikei Gorge. Tip: Purchasing your ticket through a tourist agency like Klook is cheaper and very easy to redeem on-site.

I came in late winter around end Feb when there was no snow. I was expecting to see the snowy gorge/ canyon but it was just bare trees. I think it would be good to come either in the peak winter time or autumn when you can see autumn foliage. The boat was packed to the core and the seat was super cramped. Cant even cross my leg and its hard to look at the view from the boat when everything is covered with plastic that is not see through. Its a touristy place.. Overall its still nice to visit if its convenient. In my case i came from Sendai so it took me almost 2 hours and costed 4k+ yen just to come here, its not that worth it in my case. But still super nice view overall. Nothing much to do in the area.

This River Ride in Geibikei Gorge was one of the best I've ever had so far. I visited this place as part of a tour with friends guided by a Japanese driving instructor. The scenery was fantastic, ducks, fishes followed along the way, and you could purchase a small plastic bag with food in case you wanted to feed them. We did and they followed us all the way. There were many caves along the way, shadows, as the boat rider did a fantastic job with jokes, talking all the time, keeping us amused. He even sang an old song dedicated to Iwate prefecture. A must go, if you come in iwate Prefecture. I only wish we had a little bit more time in the half way rest, so i could take more pictures.

Cheery boat ride along the tranquil gorge. Perhaps it was not the best time to come (mid oct) as the autumn colours have yet to set in yet, and there was also no mist (mist is often mentioned in the description of how various parts of the gorge got its name). Still an enjoyable trip with ducklings and huge fishes accompanying the journey. The boatman was also cheerily entertaining the almost entirely domestic audience, and also serenading us with a song at the end. A pity I didn’t understand Japanese, but it was a fun experience nonetheless. I bought on klook - about a hundred yen off.
Shihao F — Google review
As long as you make it on time, you could just sit back and relax on the boat to take in the great view of the gorge. You could also consider buying the duck feed and feeding them along the ride!
Oscar C — Google review
Such a relaxing experience cruising down the river and taking in the beauty of the gorge. I loved how the guide sang to us on the way back too! Although the tour was in Japanese, an English guide map was provided for us so we could follow along.
Rebecca B — Google review
This was an incredible time! The boat man's song was soothing. The ducks are too cute! Recommend buying the fish food!!
Jamie — Google review
Incredible experience, if you take the train make sure you get a ticket rather than try to use your IC card like we did. Singing of the boat operator was a special experience. Buy fish food right before the boat to feed the fish and ducks along the way. Afterwards there is likely a 2 hour wait for the next train, this provided time to eat at Delika and see the Yugendo cave nearby.

Yūgendō Cave is a fascinating natural wonder located near Geibikei Gorge in Japan. This ancient limestone cave, which was submerged 50 meters underwater around 350 million years ago, offers visitors an unforgettable underground adventure. As you explore the cave's interior, you'll encounter hidden fossils embedded in its walls and witness the remnants of its prehistoric past.
A relatively short-lengthened but beautiful cave with small shrines to the goddess Kannon inside. Along the way you will encounter a number of narrow and low passages, so be prepared that you will have to bend and squat. Drops of water from above will also not let you come out clean and dry, so I recommend to prepare an appropriate clothing.

Boring, remote, and the ticket is expensive. Very disappointed. But the view on the way to here is very beautiful, especially the cemetery outside the entrance. You may consider going straight to Ryusendo if you have time. The ticket is cheaper and amazing.
Wei-cheng W — Google review
The price point felt a little high for the overall experience. But it is a nice cave to walk through with beautiful spots in and out of the cave.

Fascinating! Lots of cool fossils and formations. Definitely worth a quick stop and 1100¥ per adult. The path is narrow and often low. Stairs and ramps can be quite steep. I would not bring my grandmother. There are many shrines inside so bring enough coins to make a few offerings.

limestone cave near famous touring spot “Geibikei” (boat tour). Narrow cave, up and down stairs a lot. It is about 30min explore walk. It would be too hard for elderly parson or toddler. Admission fee is 1100yen for adult. If you like fossils, enjoyable.

Amazing cave system. Granted it was my first time in a real cave. It takes about 20 min to travel through. I’m 183cm tall and I was squatting most of the way. Don’t wear a large backpack inside! You won’t fit!Half way through there is a fork in the system. One way is for children and elderly, the other is for people who want a challenge. Go down/left for the easy way, and up/right for the hard route. Awesome experience. The ticket was around 10$ per adult.

We weren't planning on stopping by, but had some extra time and decided to visit. It's less touristy than Ryusendo and the stairs can get pretty steep, but it has its good points too. We found it really enjoyable and are glad we dropped by!

I loved it here, it is a beautiful cave with fossils hidden in the walls. It takes about 30 minutes to walk through the entire cave depending on how many photographs you take along the way. There are a few narrow sections and quite a few stairs too! It might be wise to take a hard hat with you as it could be easy to hit your head in a few places.

Soba noodle shop
If you're a fan of hearty, non-vegetarian dishes, Aoba Chokurian is a must-visit during your travels. Renowned for its exceptionally thick soba noodles, this restaurant has garnered attention from food lovers even beyond Ichinoseki and as far away as Tokyo. The founder's vision was to create noodles that required a good chew, allowing diners to savor the natural sweetness of buckwheat in every bite.
TL;DR: Amazing place, best experience I've had in years, everyone was really really nice Before giving the review, I would like to say: I'm a traveller on a 3 month trip in Japan, and I still don't speak a lot of Japanese. I arrived in this restaurant after a long walk in ichinoseki, and I was very hungry. The menu was 100% in japanese. After ordering, I talked with the staff about what I was doing, and my upcoming and previous destinations. She was really very nice to me. A bit after the food arrived, they brought me a different soup that went really well with the original soba soup. The food was absolutely amazing. After I finished, they all waved at me and overall I was so happy with my meal and the discussions I had that I've been in a great mood all day since then! I entirely recommend this place to anyone who comes to Ichinoseki. It was really amazing

Be ready for long thick delicious chewy noodles with the fresh taste grilling oil for the tempura, I recommend this place to any Soba lover. I ordered tempura Soba 🍜 and as usual it’s always delicious with friendly environment and a 😊 smile. Thank you 🙏 so much for helping me order since I can’t read the menu well 🤓.

We got there 10 minutes before the opening time but the seats were already full. You first place your order in the back of the restaurant near the cash register and get a number which they'll call out as they bring your food to your seat. Also, don't be shy about sharing a table with a stranger. Due to limited space you're likely to be day wherever there is an opening. I have never seen soba as thick as the soba from this restaurant and each noodle is super long. The noodles are chewy and the taste is mild. The dipping sauce was too sweet and too strong for my preference, however. Overall, I found it a very unique soba noodle shop.

The restaurant is quite large and has about 30 to 40 seats. I ordered first and was shown to my seat. I received a slip with a number on it and waited. I waited for 30 minutes. Finally, the food was served. Ebi tempura with plenty of batter. And very thick soba noodles like udon. The chewy soba noodles were a little powdery, and they became empty towards the end. The batter of the shrimp tempura is hard, so I dipped it in the soup while eating it. I entered the restaurant one after another, and by the time I left, there was a line outside. It's a popular restaurant. Thank you for the meal. (Translated by Google) Arrived at 11:30 on a weekday, and the first parking lot next to the restaurant was full. When you enter the restaurant, you go to the counter in the back, order first, and then sit down. The restaurant was full, probably because it was lunchtime, and it seems to be a popular restaurant. I ordered a large bowl of tempura (1,550 yen). Perhaps because it was busy, it was served 30 minutes after ordering. Since it was my first time, I was surprised at how thick the soba was. It was so thick that I didn't think it was soba, and it was so thick that I thought it was udon. Perhaps because the thickness of the noodles raised my expectations, the taste was only so good. Because it was so thick, it didn't mix well with the noodle soup, and I felt like I was tasting it separately🙇 The noodle soup was also very lukewarm, and the shrimp tempura also had a feeling that the batter was adding to the flavor. However, the soba soup after the soba was very delicious, so I will give it 3 stars this time. The staff worked efficiently despite being busy, and it was very pleasant to watch them serve customers! Thank you for the meal😋 (Original)

We ordered at the register and sat down and waited for 15 minutes (there were many other customers, but it was pretty fast). The noodles were so thick you wouldn't think they were soba! And the soup was thick. The condiments were white spring onions and dried radish (spicy). It was a perfect match✨ They often say that soba is easy to swallow, but this soba is different. Chew on it and enjoy the flavor of the soba, the saltiness and sweetness of the soup, and the spiciness of the condiments😍 It was about an hour and a half from Miyagi, but I have no regrets about going! It came with shrimp tempura and was a very satisfying soba💯. I've tried a variety of soba, but this is the only one. Even after I ate, customers continued to come in one after another. I heard that if the soba runs out, the store closes early. I recommend coming early. Sake Brewery Seki no Ichi is a nostalgic restaurant with a beautiful building that has been reinforced after the 2011 earthquake. The place offers great craft beers and a variety of mochi to enjoy. It also features a dark and mysterious cafe, adding to its allure. Visitors can look forward to trying out the sake and beef shabu-shabu, which are highly recommended. Additionally, there's a souvenir shop next to the restaurant for those looking for mementos.
The mochi with nine different tastes and the tasting beer set was a perfect match. My wife ordered the sabu sabu with local beef. I even ordered an extra sabu sabu set without meat. The nine dishes mochi set has one dish that’s not vegetarian, and the soup that included in the meal has chicken. The staff were so helpful let me know that it has chicken and removed from the soup for us. We made reservation months ago so no wait in line.

Very friendly staff. We had the hot pot set. They guided us well and explained as good as possible how to eat. The broth was well balanced. You get to tear off small dough chunks and cook it like small noodles. We also ordered the set of mochis with difference flavors which were not all to our liking. The mochi itself was very pillowy. Thank you.

The local food at the restaurant was so gewd, and the beer flight was amazing as well. The architecture of the goods building was resuited with more beams for support, since it toppled over during the 2011 earthquake. This is an old nihonshu brewery with a number of interesting old buildings, a museum, a gift shop with limited tasting, a cafe, a beer brewery, and a restaurant specializing in local delicacies. The nihonshu and beer are great -- especially the light and refreshing ale flavored with the peppery sansho herb. The food is great -- I got mulberry leaf udon, mixed mochi dishes, and tempura for a reasonable 1600 yen. Just the museum was not so interesting for 300 yen and I wish there had been more information about things to do there, tastings, and the food -- and I can speak and read Japanese. There are other interesting things nearby, though, including an old samurai home next to a quaint 19th century church.

They have a full menu of udon and soba noodles, but they also have ramen, donburi, curry, and fried set meals. I wanted to eat ankake udon, but I also wanted to eat soba! So, I asked if it was possible to order a side dish that wasn't on the menu, and apparently it was possible! I ordered at ・Ankake (udon/soba) side dish 800 yen The rice bowl arrives in about 10 minutes. Mom, it's hot, so be careful! He will leave you a tissue. This unusual donburi is filled with chicken, bamboo shoots, shimeji mushrooms, and other ingredients, so you can't even see the noodles. There's a boiled egg on top. At first, the sticky, piping hot filling that resembles Japanese-style Tenshin rice is delicious, and although it takes a while, you slurp it up, then pull the noodles up from the bottom. The soba is thick and chewy, but it has a strong soba aroma that overwhelms the flavor of the bean paste. The udon noodles are flat noodles similar to houto noodles and have a chewy texture. Regular customers start coming in one after another around 11:30, so it's a popular restaurant. Thank you for the meal (^~^) (Original)

(Translated by Google) I was traveling from Kansai and wanted to eat udon or soba from Iwate, so I looked it up online and stopped by here for lunch 🙂 The store has a somewhat nostalgic feel, with the smell of the good old Showa era, which is rarely seen in the city. I ordered Hana Udon and Ankake Udon. I had the Hana Udon noodles cold, and my husband had the Ankake sauce hot. The noodles are extremely thick, about wider than kishimen, but they are moderately thick and soft, so they go down easily and are easy to eat. The soup stock is sweet, but the grated daikon radish with a hint of chili pepper makes it a light meal 😄 When you finish eating the noodles, add the udon boiling water and drink the soup stock. It's like soba-yu. The ankake is really hot, so be careful not to burn your tongue 😆 I finished it with a lot of fuss and a struggle! Both were delicious with a gentle taste, thank you for the meal ✨ (Original)

Nestled in the southern part of the prefecture, Jajamaru is a hidden gem where you can indulge in Morioka's beloved specialty, Jajamen. This cozy eatery offers generous portions that are sure to satisfy your hunger without breaking the bank. The satiety set is particularly substantial, so be prepared for a hearty meal! You have the option to customize your experience by selecting from one to five servings of noodles and various toppings like cheese, butter, or even spicy flavors.
Nice and cosy place to eat some ramen. Kimchi ramen was really tasty.

I like the difference between the plain beaten egg and the beaten egg mixed with miso because the flavor changes. Jajamen's miso is not just miso, it's quite complex and delicious. It has a very strong taste, so you don't need to add miso, and adding garlic will enhance the flavor and I like it even more. There were 3 counter seats and 5 raised seats inside the store. The menu was posted on the wall. Jajamen also had a variety of seasonings. There was also a menu of cold noodles, rice bowls, and stewed udon. There seems to be a student discount, so you can get 100 yen off on selected menu items. This time I received the 2-color set. It was a set menu of jaja noodles with a half egg and cold noodles. As for my impressions of eating it, the Jaja noodles arrived first. It was a simple dish with miso, green onion, and cucumber on top of the noodles, but the chewy noodles combined with the rich miso gave it a consistently delicious taste. Cold noodles were served later. It was probably delicious, but I was disappointed that I couldn't really taste the cold noodles because the seasoning of Jajamen was stronger. The cucumber had a grassy smell, which was especially painful when eating cold noodles. I thought it was reasonable to be able to enjoy two local gourmet dishes from Iwate for less than 1,000 yen. Restaurants specializing in jaja noodles are rare in southern Iwate, and I think you can enjoy a wide variety of jaja noodles. I think it's also good for people who want to eat local gourmet food while sightseeing or on a business trip. Geibi Resthouse, a convenient stop for a quick bite or drink, offers an array of delightful treats and gifts. Visitors can purchase omiyage for loved ones and indulge in locally sourced, delectable fresh fruits. One customer even skeptically acquired an exceptionally large apple from the lady at the store, making it the most expensive apple they've ever bought (for 350 yen!). Nonetheless, their satisfaction with both the apple and the store speaks volumes about its quality.

Using the system where you pay first, this time I ordered Geibisoba, which is a specialty of our restaurant. The soba noodles were topped with various toppings such as sashimi, raw eggs, tempura, wild vegetables, mushrooms, green onions, and seaweed, and were eaten by mixing them with mentsuyu. When I first ate the sashimi and then mixed it with raw egg and mixed it with beaten mentsuyu, it turned out to be much more delicious than I expected. It's true that they are commonly used as ingredients for soba noodles, so there's no way they wouldn't go well together. It's only natural that it's delicious because you can taste it all at once. It was really delicious. I was the type of person who had to pick up water, tea, and soba hot water by myself, but the tea and soba hot water had a disinfectant or rather medicinal smell, which was very disappointing. If it was just tea, it would be fine if I didn't drink it, but I was in a state where I felt that way even with soba hot water, so even if I added mentsuyu, it smelled so bad that I didn't want to drink it. The soba noodles were delicious, so I wish they would have paid a little more attention to that aspect. Nestled near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hiraizumi, Esashi-Fujiwara-no-sato Heritage Park is a captivating theme park that immerses visitors in the rich history of Japan's Heian period. Originally designed as a film set, this park features authentic buildings and interactive experiences that allow guests to don traditional ceremonial attire like Juni-hitoe and Sokutai. Activities abound, from clamshell decorating to archery and even trying on samurai armor.
Went here with a group from Taiwan! The staff was incredibly warm and inviting. There were so many quality activities arranged for us. If you're looking for a fun time with friends and less of a history lesson then this place is perfect. Samurai and kimono dress up. Archery, forced perspective displays, drum performance, fish feeding and more. I thoroughly enjoyed the forced perspective display. One particular individual from the staff was so helpful, and hilarious. Good excitement was contagious. The bathrooms were very clean. Finally they offer the sale of fresh apples. Should you require lunch there is a small cantina/cafeteria. When we left on the tour bus, the staff waved us a good journey from when we drove by them all the way to the exit. Heartwarming.

We visited during the weekday around noon, and there were very few people around. The place is large, but as it's a historical theme park, there’s not much to do beyond exploring. The ticket price, about 1,000 JPY per person, seems reasonable if you enjoy this type of attraction. The activities available include archery (which seems geared towards kids), taking 3D photos, and wearing traditional Heian clothing for photos. These activities are self-guided, and we only encountered staff at the gate and construction site—there were none near the activities themselves. A place you might enjoy if you have plenty of time to spare.

Strictly for Japanese history buffs but also good for the average tourists who want a taste of ancient Japan and the lifestyle of that time. The full course is over 2 hours but there is a shorter route of about 50 minutes which also includes a free photo in traditional costume. You get a packet of peanuts and a KAIRO (pocket size warmer) with the entrance ticket. I visited the place in winters and had the place to myself on a Saturday afternoon. It looks beautiful when covered in snow and the contrast with the blue sky/orange buildings is quite good.

(Translated by Google) There used to be a 12th century temple here, called Muryokoin, that was built by Fujiwara Hidehira, the third head of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, who ruled the Tohoku region around the end of the Heian period. The temple itself no longer exists, only the remains, and it seems that the state of the building at that time is unknown. However, after excavation of the remains, the scale and ancillary facilities (gardens, earthworks, etc.) at that time have been clarified to some extent, and what is visible above ground seems to be a reproduction of the pond garden at that time based on that investigation. Apparently, the pond is sometimes filled with water depending on the season, but there was no water when I visited in early spring. For this reason, at first glance it looked like just a flat area of grass. There is a signboard where you can read the explanation of the historical site, and there is no admission fee, so it is nice that it doesn't cost anything to see it.

(Translated by Google) The Muryokoin Temple Ruins were registered as a World Heritage Site in 2011 as part of the "Cultural Heritage of Hiraizumi." These are the remains of a temple built by Fujiwara Hidehira, the third head of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. It was modeled after the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple in Uji, Kyoto, but excavations have revealed that it was larger than Byodoin Temple. Muryokoin Temple's complex was a Pure Land garden centered around the Amida Hall, with Mount Kinkei located behind it (to the west). This layout was calculated to allow visitors to experience the sight of the sun setting over the ridge of Mount Kinkei twice a year, in spring and autumn, as a Buddhist paradise. This unique expression of Hiraizumi's Pure Land philosophy, distinct from Byodoin Temple, has earned it international acclaim. After the fall of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, the temple was destroyed by repeated fires, and now only the remains of the pond, the island, and foundation stones remain. Michinoku Hydrangea Garden, certified as Japan's No.1 hydrangea garden by the Japan Hydrangea Association, is a magical wonderland boasting 40,000 hydrangea plants of 400 different types in various shapes and colors. The vast grounds offer a spectacular sight with various types of hydrangeas planted throughout. Visitors are recommended to wear comfortable shoes as they wander through this enchanting garden.
We saw this garden advertised at the gorge nearby, so we decided to visit because we both love hydrangeas. Unfortunately, it was very early in the season, and the small pond was not yet filled with hydrangea blossoms, but it was still well worth the visit. The cedar forest with the various types of hydrangeas is simply beautiful. Please visit if you can!

(Translated by Google) First visit to Michinoku Hydrangea Garden (July 1, 2025) This was another place I wanted to visit for the Tohoku Hydrangeas, and it was about a 15-minute drive from Hiraizumi Roadside Station. Entrance fee: ¥1000 Cart: ¥800 (reservations recommended) The Hydrangea Pond is scheduled to open from July 4th to 21st this year, and I couldn't see the photos on the poster. Overall, it's still early, and it's expected to be in full bloom around this weekend. The hydrangea garden was built by cutting down cedar trees, and it is one of the largest hydrangea gardens in Japan, boasting an area equivalent to four Tokyo Domes (about 3km around the garden on the mountain path). I had expected to go up and down the mountain, so I wore trekking shoes, but after looking at the route on the signboard, I got on the cart, which costs extra (lol) (Cards cannot be used to get off mid-way) Well, I guess it's like viewing it on the Hakone Tozan Railway's Hydrangea Train. The driver explained things to us in Iwate dialect, so it was fun to chat while admiring the flowers (lol). It would take more than half a day to walk around and enjoy the flowers, and since they bloom at different times, it might be best to take a cart around and then walk to the spots that interest you to take photos. I saw some varieties I had never seen before, such as variegated hydrangeas with white bands around the leaves and climbing hydrangeas that wrap around trees and grow upwards. (Translated by Google) Visited on July 13th. The grounds are well maintained and the hydrangeas are in full bloom. The walkways are paved with crushed stone and have some ups and downs, so we recommend bringing water and a towel and wearing comfortable clothing. For older people, there is a paid cart service that will take you around the garden, so you may want to consider using this. We visited at a good time, and the sight of the various hydrangeas in full bloom was truly spectacular. The pond with hydrangeas floating in it was also beautiful. (Translated by Google) It was a wonderful place. Particularly beautiful were the hydrangeas blooming on the slopes of the mountain, which looked like a mountain of hydrangeas, and the hydrangea pond, which was also featured on posters as a flower field. There are ups and downs when you walk, so if you have small children, I recommend using a cart. All the drivers were locals, and they told me about the highlights and origins of hydrangeas, which was very educational. Also, don't be fooled by Google, it's definitely better to rent a car. I misunderstood Google Maps and thought it was a 10-minute walk from the station (about the same distance as Kasumigaseki from Tokyo Station), and if I hadn't met a kind person, I would have starved to death on the way home. The hydrangeas were beautiful overall, but I thought it was wonderful that so many local people gathered together and supported each other to create this landscape. I'd like to go again with a rental car or camper van, prepared with a camera, to see it!

There were not many blooming areas🙇 The walking path is also quite tiring with steep ups and downs🙇 The "hydrangea pond," which is the highlight, is not all over the water! The flowers flowed to the back, so it was very different from what you see in the photos It costs 1,500 yen to enter, but I think they should focus on pruning the plants and shaping the flowers in the pond It was raining that day, and frogs and snails showed their faces, so I was able to take some good photos (Original)

(Translated by Google) I used to often use the roadside station next door, but I never had the chance to go to the museum, so this was my first time entering it. The main exhibits were on the second floor, and although Ichinoseki residents had heard of them at least once, most of the exhibits were new to us when we came here. The maiso sword area in particular was breathtaking and I was glad to be able to watch the production process on video. Other things that caught my attention were the maps of the Iwai region from the Genroku period, the demon corpse village that is often featured on video sites, and Ichinoseki and Sanseki, which still have place names today, but the place name Nikoseki actually existed at that time. So, why are there 1 and 3 but not 2? The long-standing mystery has been solved (lol) As of April 2020, the general fee is 300 yen, so it is recommended not only for Ichinoseki residents but also for those coming from outside the city or for sightseeing. Genbi-kei is also within a 5-minute walk and can be used for sightseeing as well. Since it is a city museum, the scale and exhibits are smaller than the prefectural museum, so if you don't dig into one material or exhibit, you might be able to finish it quickly. Adults have to pay 300 yen, which seems reasonable. What caught my attention was the Japanese sword exhibition room. It's wonderful to be able to see the actual stage of a Japanese sword, from a block of iron to a stick and being hammered into a shining sword, on video, but it's a shame that the video is currently unavailable due to the coronavirus pandemic... On weekdays, there are fewer people and the lobby is quiet, and the lobby is free to use, so it's a great place to take a break or relax. There were a lot of menus, so it was hard to decide. First, I ordered beer 🍺😁 For the children, there is a set menu from 5pm, and we chose two dishes from that. It comes with rice, soup, pickles, and dessert. There are also various single dishes, and we ordered Maezawa beef stir-fried with oyster sauce and shrimp fried rice. The shrimp used were large and filling. Everything was delicious. The Maezawa beef oyster sauce was a little sweet, and the meat was soft. It seemed a little oily, but.... But personally, I was satisfied. If I come back, I'll try other dishes🍴 Thank you for the meal☺️ (Original)

Italian restaurant
The Italian restaurant, Trattoria Manma, offers delectable and affectionately prepared cuisine. The serving sizes are generous, and the prices are reasonable. An English menu is available, catering to international guests who will find the staff welcoming and accommodating. It is highly recommended to visit this eatery before or after exploring the nearby Geibikei gorge.
I visited Geibikei Gorge and on the way I had lunch here with my family. The pasta dishes were really good!

Stopped by after the Geibekei Gourge tour and we had some time (45 minutes) before the train back to Ichinoseki. Quaint place with nice pasta. What a find. Can recommend the spicy spaghetti with shrimp.

Tasty and lovingly-prepared food. Portion sizes were good and the price reasonable. English menu was available and the staff were very welcoming to international guests. Worth a visit, especially if you plan to visit the nearby Geibikei gorge and need a bite to eat before or after.

(Translated by Google) This Italian restaurant is a great choice for a stop before or after a Geibikei Gorge boat ride. It's also conveniently located for dropping by while sightseeing. The restaurant has a calm atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely meal. I also like the homey feel of having soft drinks self-serve from plastic bottles. The pasta is made with local Ichinoseki ingredients (Ichinoseki vegetables, Iwai chicken, Iwate Minami beef, etc.). They even use a homemade seasoning based on a unique variation of local Sasanaga soy sauce. I believe this careful attention to detail is what makes every bite so delicious. The cream pasta is especially tasty. It was a flavor that made me want to return as soon as I tried it. Yakiniku restaurant
Restaurant
Yamato, a popular yakiniku eatery, is a go-to spot for those craving delicious grilled meat. Located near a hotel, it offers an affordable set menu that can be enjoyed by English-speaking customers who can request the English menu. However, due to its popularity, it tends to get quite crowded in the evenings resulting in longer wait times. Nevertheless, overall feedback about Yamato is positive as it provides excellent food options for chilly nights.
Had the cheapest ice cream I have seen in ichinoseki! I would recommend to all future consumers of ice cream!

A cat robot server! Very cool. Food was good, but the smoke was very overwhelming at first. Don't wear fresh cloth I guess.

Delicious Yakiniku place. Ate there while I was staying at the hotel nearby. The set was quite affordable, ask for the English menu. Pretty crowded at night though so the wait was a little long. Overall, an excellent meal for a cold night!

(Translated by Google) I visited Yamato for the first time in Iwate to eat reimen, and the parking lot and interior were spacious, with a lot of customers with license plates from outside the prefecture. I had planned to just order reimen, but I also had the grilled kalbi set meal. The price was reasonable, and the kalbi was a little thin, but the delicious yakiniku sauce was just the right amount to go with the rice. The reimen, on top of that, was smooth and easy to swallow. I was a little surprised at how sweet it was when I took a sip of the chilled soup, but when I added the spicy kakuteki, the sweetness blended with the spiciness and sourness to create a delicious dish. It's been a while since I've had reimen, but the watermelon makes it truly feel like summer reimen.

(Translated by Google) I visited this store for the first time during the Reimen Festival at the Iwate store. It was lunchtime on a holiday, so I made a reservation on Hot Pepper before arriving. It started to get crowded around 12 o'clock. The seats were partitioned, so it felt like a private room. They didn't serve me kakuteki at other stores, but they gave me a complimentary serving of kakuteki. I wonder if it varies by store, or if it was because I made a reservation. As always, Yamato's reimen is refreshing, easy to eat, and delicious! Watermelon season is over, so they switched to pears. I was surprised at how quickly the food was served, including the other menu items. The staff also had lovely smiles and made a good impression. I'll definitely stop by again if I'm in the area. I arrived as soon as the restaurant opened, but customers kept coming in and it was already full. It's a popular local chain restaurant. The desserts were also delicious and the value for money was great.
