Numata in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Numata, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Numata offers easy access to some of Gunma’s best natural scenery, including Fukiware Falls, often called the “Niagara of the East,” and the forested canyons of the Katashina River. The nearby Oigami Onsen area provides traditional hot spring inns where visitors can soak in outdoor baths surrounded by mountains. In winter, the Tambara Ski Park draws skiers and snowboarders, while in summer its highland plateau becomes a popular spot for lavender fields and hiking. The compact city center, with Numata Castle ruins and local shops, makes a convenient base for exploring the region.
With favorites like Kappa Sushi, 生そば下山, and Harada Farm, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Kappa Sushi and うどん処無もん so you can get the best taste of Numata while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Fukiware Falls is a picturesque waterfall measuring 7 meters high and 30 meters wide. It is accompanied by a suspension bridge that offers great views of the falls. The location charges Y1000 yen for parking, which can be used to purchase items from nearby shops such as apples or miso. There is also free parking available at the traffic light just south of the falls. This spot boasts breathtaking beauty throughout the year, with autumn being particularly impressive due to its vivid colors.
Spectacular and unique slot canyon falls, especially in the autumn foliage. The hiking loop was worth it (go anti-clockwise) and provided various views of the falls. Took about an hour to go around maybe 2-3 km.

Fukiware Falls is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a serene escape from urban life. Its dynamic beauty, coupled with accessible trails and nearby attractions, makes it a perfect day trip or weekend getaway. Whether you're capturing the misty cascades on camera or simply soaking in the tranquil ambiance, Fukiware Falls promises an unforgettable experience.
Anisur Z — Google review
A set of stunning waterfalls! It's a bit out of the way, but it was definitely worth it; especially with 30°C weather. The water is very clear, and the walkway is literally next to thr waterfall. The only way to get closer is by falling in. Aside from the path right next to the waterfall, there's also a path along a pair of bridges, leading around to the other side of the river. Plenty of parking nearby as well, but all of it is paid parking; our parking spot was 500 yen.
Guy — Google review
The waterfall cuts through the rocks in a dramatic way, almost like the earth has split open. The walking trail around the gorge offers great views of the falls and the surrounding cliffs. It’s especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves change color. The area is clean and well maintained, and the staff at the visitor center are friendly. Definitely worth the trip if you enjoy nature and scenic walks. The only downside is that there’s a constant announcement to be careful around the falls, which is replayed in 3 languages every 2 minutes, which gets annoying. There’s a paid parking lot at the entrance for 500 yen, but if you drive a minute further, you’ll find free parking.
Bahareh — Google review
Visited Fukiware Falls on a weekday and found the walk to be quite nice, with pleasant scenery along the way. However, you can’t get a perfect view of the waterfall since there are restricted areas you’re not allowed to cross. There’s also a loud, repetitive announcement about safety warnings that takes away a bit from the natural atmosphere. Overall, it’s an interesting stop but a bit overhyped, especially if you’re expecting a quiet nature experience.
Mohammad M — Google review
Fukiware Falls is about a 40–50 minute drive from Minakami. The falls are stunning, set within a picturesque gorge that gives the area a uniquely Japanese charm. It’s a peaceful spot where you can spend around 30 minutes just taking in the scenery and listening to the soothing sound of the water. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!
Lionel N — Google review
Very nice and unique falls in the nature. Around 15 minutes from Kawaba City. Also not too crowded. You also can do a round hike for around 30 minutes - 1 hour. You can park very closely for only 500 yen. No entry cost. So if you like nature and water, definitely recommended! Also around 2-3 hours from Tokyo.
Ryusei H — Google review
Nice walk around the impressive falls, rapids and whirlpools. The river has a strong current, and the geological formations were interesting to observe. There is a walking circuit, but it was partially closed, so we walked back and forth to the parking lot. There are no rails, so be careful when walking as the water and mist can make the rocks slippery.

At Kajitsu no Sato Harada Farm, located in Numata, visitors can experience a delightful fruit-picking adventure. The farm is known for its wide variety of fruits such as strawberries, cherries, peaches, grapes, and apples. After enjoying the fun of picking fresh fruits, guests can visit the farm shop to indulge in delectable treats made from the harvested produce.
We drop by here as part of the tour. We enjoyed the snow crab meal. They also have here fresh fruits, vegetables and souvenirs such as breads, chocolate and preserves

Not too impressed with their all-you-can-eat snow crab at the second floor restaurant, which mostly patrons were tour bus tourists. The strawbery you-pick farm was very good though.

Wonderful place for Cherry Picking, held from end-May to mid-June. We came on the first Sunday of June, and had a great dayout here! (2.5 hours drive from Tokyo, and plenty of carparking space)

Very interesting farm with a market and a restaurant. You can choose a apple, blueberry, cherry, peach and strawberry picking session with including lunch. Pre-booking is needed. Highly recommended.
Nadeesha W — Google review
Went there for strawberry picking. Unforgettable experience. Its an education tour for my children as they love strawberries. For muslims, no halal food except for the fruits they harvest and sell themselves. Tour guide told us that in starting June there will be grapes picking and before June will be strawberries...

Tambara Ski Park is a family-friendly resort that offers various activities including snowboarding, skiing, and a snow park. It has eight runs suitable for beginners and experienced skiers alike, as well as a kids' area for young children. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy the beautiful lavender fields in the surrounding area. The facilities are top-notch and the staff is friendly and helpful. This ski resort has received positive feedback from many customers who plan on returning due to their enjoyable experience.
This was the last stop of our Gunma tour last February so we had just a little time to spend here. This was a fun snow resort, I really loved the sledding experience. I would love to come back if the opportunity allows.

Wonderful snow and slopes, well maintained, Almost all natural snow, Far on the mountain so access is difficult. Gets very crowded because of popularity.

This is also a summer destination. Went here End of July 2018. Hills were full of flowers. There were a lot lavenders already but they were probably 2 weeks short of full bloom. It has a restaurant where you can eat near the park’s entrance. There is also a locker area and clean restrooms. Near the entrance there are expansive flower beds. You can also take a cable car to further go up the mountain. On the higher slopes there are also restaurants and rest areas to sit. Weather is very cool even during summers but there is no need to bring a jacket. Bring sun block and hats as sun is very strong.

We wend there in summer season. Sunflower garden was so beautiful and there was lavender too. Lavender ice-cream was the best ice-cream that I ever had. was super delicious.

Really nice runs for the novice/beginners with a few black runs. So here's the trick though... Buy a one way ticket (500¥) which will get you on the lift to the very top of the mountain (there's a midway lift that will take you all the way up after you get off the initial lift). Then, take the green or red runs to the halfway portion of the mountain (that second lift I was just talking about). There's no one there checking tickets so you can just keep going up to the top and back to the midway point over and over. That run to the midway point is decent and long enough with different routes so you don't get bored and the lift back to the top each time is free! We only paid 500¥ and went up on the lift from the midway point to the top like 7 or 8 times. Only paid 500¥ for the entire day! Can't beat it. 1000¥ parking though. 😉

Recently, the Tanbara Ski Park has been empty and the weather has been really nice, so I was able to snowboarding very comfortably 😆 This year, there is a lot of snow and the snow is soft, so even beginners can enjoy it!
Sho N — Google review
Probably the best ski park in Gunma. Runs for both beginners and intermediate riders. Jumps and boxes for advanced riders. I wish it had a dedicated terrain park with jumps, boxes, rails, etc. though. The food is also good. Best place to rent gear. Boards and boots are always high quality. I feel like guys always get girly boards though.
Billy G — Google review
Went in the month of March and guide told us the weather was getting hotter. At the park itself, they provided stations with equipments for us to enjoy the activities. Definately worth the 3 hour trip from Tokyo for a family like us who have not seen any snow before.

Botanical garden
Tambara Lavender Park is a hillside park that boasts over 50,000 lavender shrubs in full bloom from mid-July to mid-August. The park also features a variety of other flowers like sunflowers and hydrangeas, offering visitors a colorful floral display. During winter, the area transforms into a beginners' ski slope. Additionally, the park offers aerial views through a chair lift and is located about 20km from the Numata IC exit.
Our visit to Tambara Lavender Park on August 2 was such a refreshing summer experience! 🌿💜 We took the free shuttle from Numata Station, which made the trip super convenient and stress-free. Upon arrival, we were happy to use the 50% off admission coupon, making the visit even better. We rode the lift going up to the lavender fields, and the view was absolutely beautiful — you can see the mountains, trees, and the soft purple lavender from above. It felt calm and relaxing, like a mini escape from the city. 🚡✨ Even in early August, the lavender was still in bloom, filling the air with a soft fragrance. Walking through the fields was peaceful, and we enjoyed taking lots of photos at the scenic spots. Of course, we didn’t miss the lavender ice cream — subtly floral and perfect for a summer treat! 🍦🪻

It is the peak bloom now. It's still extremely hot when there are no clouds, so be sure to keep cool. 1200 yen is kind of expensive, and for some reason we can't find our souvenir photo. :( but I can't give less stars for the perfect lavender and flower displays during peak bloom this year!
Skyy S — Google review
The landscaping and collection of flowers is amazing. I visited this place in mid July and all the flowers were in full bloom. Although it was raining that day, we thought that we will not be able to enjoy but the beauty was mesmerising

Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Kappa Sushi has undergone improvements in both taste and quality, despite a slight increase in prices. The renovated interior exudes a modern Japanese ambiance with spacious and comfortable tables. Security measures such as surveillance cameras have been implemented, and ordering through tablets has been streamlined for convenience. The restaurant's bright and clean environment defies its previous reputation of being inexpensive or subpar. Additionally, the availability of made-to-order gari adds to the confidence in enjoying meals there.
The best sushi place in Numata. I recommend stopping by for conveyor belt sushi cheap at 108 yen a plate for most stuff! But don't let the price dissuade you, it's very good quality sushi, and you can keep ordering till you're ready to leave.

(Translated by Google) Around May 2022 I ordered natural melted bonito, but what's the difference in the amount of green onions? In the first place, the amount is too different from the order image... I'm not making sushi at the moment, but the image on the lane is a little hard to see, but it's dirty with what looks like scattered stains. I think they should be a little more careful about hygiene. There seems to be a shortage of manpower, but I think it would be better to clean the store properly even if the store is closed...after all, it's a restaurant... I would like to see the quality of products become more uniform. I understand that male employees are also busy. If you keep someone waiting, I think it's okay to say something along the lines of "Sorry to have kept you waiting." March 2023 Since it has reopened, I went there for the first time in a while with high expectations. The problem is that there is only one conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Numata. Although the store is new, it seems that the structure of the store itself has not changed. From the 5th photo onwards, the natto rolls were actually remade. There seemed to be various problems at neighboring tables and the staff were constantly being called. I think it's difficult because there are various problems with conveyor belt sushi these days. The store side is not without its problems, so I hope they do their best.

(Translated by Google) The store is located along National Route 120, about 2 minutes from Numata IC on the Kanetsu Expressway. There are counter seats and box seats. The number of seats is approximately 200. Reservations can be made online, and take-out orders can also be made. You order using the touch panel and the lineart will bring the sushi to you, but sometimes the staff will bring the sushi to you. The time from ordering to arrival was a little slow, and I felt that the number of staff in the kitchen was unbalanced compared to the seating capacity. Please note that there may be mixed times during the tourist season. The interior of the restaurant, which has tables and a tatami room, is decorated with local items, perhaps in keeping with the old-style house. From the seats at the very back of the tatami room, you can see the river flowing right next to you, and enjoy a tasteful meal. The menu only has two a la carte dishes: different types of soba noodles, the main course, and sobagaki. They serve 100% buckwheat soba, made with domestically grown unpolished buckwheat flour ground by the owner in a stone mill. ⁡ Since we were visiting with a group of people that day, we ordered both tempura soba and duck soup soba. The tempura soba had a large enoki mushroom with its wings spread out, which made quite an impact. All the soba noodles were delicious. As it was 100% buckwheat, you could enjoy the rich aroma of the soba. The thick broth may be a matter of personal preference, but it goes well with the soba and doesn't interfere with the aroma. The voluminous tempura was also highly praised. The heavy oil was a bit of a concern, but it left me feeling satisfied and like I'd had a good meal of tempura! However, the overall quality was high and the food was just as tasty, but why? I didn't feel the "wow" that comes with eating delicious soba... I probably wouldn't have minded if I'd been eating it in town or in my neighborhood, but considering that I was eating soba in the mountains of Gunma, I felt something was missing. Soba noodle shop
If you're on the hunt for a delightful culinary experience, look no further than 生そば下山. This charming eatery welcomes you with a warm greeting from its friendly owner as soon as you step inside. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, adorned with retro decor that adds to its unique charm. A must-try here is the seasonal Sudachi soba, which boasts a refreshing aroma and chewy texture that will tantalize your taste buds.
Perfect service, friendly staff and very delicious Soba Noodles. Very friendly also with foreigners although you must know basic Japanese to order.

(Translated by Google) Continuing from last week, I came to Numata in search of Sudachi soba. It's seasonal and limited in quantity, so you'll want to eat it now! This is my second time coming to Mr. Shimoyama. The shop has a nice atmosphere, and the accessories, lamps, and retro fans are still in good condition. ・Sudachi soba 1,320 yen (tax included) A cup that shines in a radial pattern☆ Kirakkira Sudachi is shipped directly from a producer in Tokushima, and comes in two large pieces. The soba is said to be from Kitawase, Akagi Miyama in Gunma Prefecture, and harvested in July. Delicious the moment you put it in your mouth ☆ Of course, I got a second helping! One ticket is 550 yen. Refreshing sudachi soup and delicious soba noodles I was so happy that I could almost see it in a dream (lol) ・Maitake mushroom and vegetable tempura 480 yen (tax included) Maitake mushrooms, pumpkins, eggplants, onions, okra The vegetables are sweet and the batter is light and delicious tempura ☆ ・Tenseiro 1,650 yen (tax included) It was written that it comes with shrimp tempura, local maitake mushrooms, and 3-4 kinds of seasonal vegetables! ! ! Shrimp, maitake mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, red bell peppers, green beans, green chili peppers, okra, eggplants, enoki mushrooms, pumpkins, zucchini? The vegetables were piled high, and the calculations didn't add up (lol) The tempura from Tenseiro is amazing! ! ! !

(Translated by Google) My third visit The soba was as delicious as ever♡ The duck flavor was strong, and the duck meat was chewy and delicious. We were also given complimentary coffee after the meal. (Maybe it was just good timing) Regarding the customer service mentioned in the reviews Both the wife and husband were very kind and greeted us with a smile. When I was playing with my cell phone a little during the meal the husband who brought me the soba soup pointed out to me that "soba gets soft quickly, so it's better to eat it quickly," but it seemed like he was trying to be polite and choose his words carefully. I think it's because he wants people to eat the delicious soba while it's still delicious. It may have been worth it for people who had a bad experience with the customer service to post a review. (There are so many reviews about the customer service that I wonder if it can't be dismissed as a personal interpretation...) However, after removing the noren early, I was able to get a glimpse of the couple's personality as they talked harmoniously with the regular customers, which made me feel warm inside.

(Translated by Google) We arrived around 11:30 on a Saturday morning after visiting Tengu at Mirokuji Temple, but there were already other customers, so we were the second group to enter. We ordered "Zaru Soba with Shrimp Tempura" and "Omelette." The omelet came out relatively quickly, but the tempura and soba took about 30 minutes to arrive. The tempura was crispy and served with both tempura sauce and salt. Honestly, I was a little hesitant about eating tempura with salt, but when I actually tried it, it was surprisingly delicious, a new discovery for me. The Zaru Soba had a firm texture and was a satisfying, delicious dish. As for the restaurant's atmosphere, there was a sign at the entrance that read "No Children Allowed," which conveys the owner's desire for customers to enjoy their soba in peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle. Fortunately, the other customers were quiet, so we were able to dine in peace. However, since the restaurant is run by a married couple, service is inevitably slow. Since I was the second group, I only had to wait about 30 minutes, but if you're the third or fourth group or later, you may have to wait over an hour. If you're impatient, it's best to line up before opening and secure your first or second group seats. Some reviews also mention that the younger customers were treated coldly, but this may be due to their attitude and the volume of their conversations inside the restaurant. The owners seem to be able to tell the customer's personality in an instant, so unless you can read the sign at the entrance and understand that this is a restaurant where you can eat quietly, this may not be your cup of tea. The food is certainly delicious, but I think this restaurant is more for people who want to enjoy soba in a quiet space, rather than speed or fast service.

I was planning to order the standard dipping soba, but I was drawn to the seasonal Sudachi soba so I also ordered the shrimp tempura, maitake mushroom, and vegetable tempura platter. The soba noodles had a nice sudachi aroma and were very refreshing and delicious. The tempura was crispy and delicious. The customer service was polite, the food was delicious, and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. (Translated by Google) The soba had a nice chewy texture and was very tasty. The tempura that I had with it was also crispy and everything was delicious. For some reason there was no sign with the name of the restaurant written on it, so be careful if you're planning to visit. It says in front of the store, but it seems that if there are more than five people, it's not allowed to sit separately. Be careful about the number of people. We visited during a long weekend, so there were many other customers, and we arrived around 12:30 and were able to eat around 14:00. There is a warning sign inside the store, but because the food is so delicious the waiting time is long, so it's best to come with plenty of time.

(Translated by Google) The tempura and soba themselves were delicious. The soba dipping sauce and tempura sauce weren't very tasty. The owner was overbearing and scary. He pretended to be polite, but his overall behavior was intimidating. He knew children under 6 were not allowed, so I did my research and came here because I knew they were old enough to do so. However, when he saw my child was younger than average, he became suspicious and verbally assured everyone in the restaurant that he could eat everything, saying things like, "I've guaranteed it," so that everyone could hear. It sounded sarcastic and scary. Should I have shown my My Number card? My child is a big eater, even though he's young, so he ate more than he could handle. We as a family eat a lot, so I wish the portions were bigger. I told them to be quiet, so they didn't make any noise, but as the reviews said, it was a restaurant that was not friendly with children. (Translated by Google) As we entered the store, the owner, with a grinning, fearless smile, announced that five people were not allowed... He spoke in a sarcastic tone, as if to say, "There's a sign (in small letters) out front, so read it carefully before you come in," and with a condescending smile, said, "We'll offer you a special this time..." When you're told something like that, the only thing you can do is leave, lol. It's practically like he's telling you to go away... By the way, it also said that children under the age of six are not allowed. I don't know if he has a particular preference or what, but I wish he'd stop treating his customers like this. The owner's customer service lacks humility and seems abnormally arrogant. He seems to particularly dislike young people under 40 and children, so be careful. The owner's temperament seems well known even locally, so it's not a place I would recommend.
