Ponte Acquedotto sul torrente Gravina

4.7
(3898)
Ponte Acquedotto Gravina, also known as the aqueduct bridge, is a historical landmark with a rich backstory. Constructed in the 17th century by the Duke of Gravina Orsini, it initially served as a bridge over the Gravina stream to connect two banks and provide access to the Madonna della Stella church. Later in the 18th century, it was repurposed into an aqueduct to supply water from nearby springs to the city.
Loved seeing this iconic bridge. We actually drove to view the bridge on the opposite side of the ravine from the town. There are two places to pull of the road to take pictures. One is where you can walk down to the bridge and the other is where you can get a view of it from a distance.
Debbie H — Google review
A really cool bridge with a James Bond connection. Not a whole lot else to see in Gravina outside of a few churches but if you’re in the area it’s worth a stop. I wouldn’t make a special trip just to gravina.
Eric T — Google review
Be very careful that Google does not lead you down roads that get your car wedged between buildings. Google Maps is not very good at locating parking for this site I will have you driving through narrow ancient walkways where your car can easily get stuck. The site itself is not bad there's not much to see and it's in Ruins except for the bridge. Nice to stop if you're nearby but definitely not a destination.
P W — Google review
I have visited just because of the James Bond Movie (No time to Die ) . We expected the Aqueduct(yes it’s an aqueduct not a bridge ) to be longer as seen in movie but in real life it’s much shorter . A place beautifully preserved and it’s a must visit . Not far from Matera by car .
Sharan P — Google review
nice bridge. you should not miss it if you are close by. be aware though, if you drive through the town because the streets can get very narrow.
Jonas F — Google review
Beautiful and tranquil setting for a 17th century aqueduct. You can get Instagram worthy photos here, with hardly any tourists wandering around. There's plenty of signage around to explain the history of it in a few languages. Worth stopping by if you're in the region.
Carlito — Google review
Located in a small, quaint town, worthwhile to visit and walk around the area. The acqueduct bridge itself is imposing and the town serving as the backdrop provides really nice picture opportunities :-)

Gravina is a beautiful little town. Not quite Matera but nice for being quieter. Beautiful churches and great view from the bridge

The art museum Foundation Ettore Pomarici Santomasi houses the remarkable frescoes of San Vito Vecchio's crypt. These exquisite artworks were detached from their original location in a rock church during the 1950s and underwent meticulous restoration in Rome. Following their refurbishment, the frescoes were returned to Gravina, where they were skillfully displayed at the foundation. This institution provides an opportunity for visitors to appreciate these captivating historical paintings.

The museum is composed of sections that span many cultural heritage themes and is housed in the baronial palace, lovingly preserved and maintained. It is, in effect, a cultural hub that houses Gravina's treasures and more: from archaeology to numismatics and paintings, there are noble costumes and period furnishings, 19th-century uniforms and weapons, and a comprehensive library.

Ancient Ruins
Chiesa Rupestre San Michele delle Grotte is an extraordinary church nestled in the ravine caves of Apulia, with a history dating back to the 7th century AD. The area is said to house a historic relic - a stack of skulls and bones from the inhabitants massacred by the Saracens in 999. Carved out of tufo, this church features five naves and 14 stone columns, making it one of the most fascinating churches in the region.
The cave cathedral is small but worth the visit. You can buy a ticket at the entrance (3 euro). It is cold inside but that`s understandable. After visiting it, you can marvel at the view of the surroundings.

All the surrounding area have been revitalised and finally we can have a view on the canyon. The church is carved into the rock. It's spectacular how it has been done knowing the poor technologies available in that period. I suggest a visit to the ossuary: a little bit spooky but it makes feel the atmosphere.

Closed for good. No opening hours, nothing. In good weather it should be accessible - with "danger" signs. Bad impression as this is the reason we made it to Gravina. The other church also closed. Leaving in disgust.

You can still see some frescoes on its walls. In an adjacent room, a pile of human bones are stored, the origin of which is not very clear. Some versions speak of victims of a Saracen attack while others say that they are remains transported 300 years ago. Admission costs €5 and includes the also cave church of Madonna della Stella. Explore the depths of Gravina Sotterranea, an underground marvel beneath the typical buildings of Gravina. This subterranean world reveals houses and churches carved from calcarenite rock, serving as cellars for storing wine, goods, and cheeses. The spaces were once used for grain storage, living quarters, and even as churches. Embark on a fascinating tour to witness this unique underground network in Puglia.

About attraction we learned by accident at the information center, where we got the address. The place was near, a small street in the city center, in the evening. Only closed doors. He spoke to a man who spoke only Italian. We have done is only a small circle - about 20-30min - and in Italian. We do not speak Italian ... But it was perfect. The special atmosphere of this place, stunning caves and cisterns - and people lived here before. It is a pity that we did not have time - I'd seen it all over again. I really recommend.

(Translated by Google) Writing this review will never be enough to do justice to the exceptional service we received from the Madonna della Stella staff. From our first meeting, we felt welcomed, listened to, and cared for with a rare dedication that accompanied every phase of our wedding planning. Nunzio was a precious and discreet presence for us, always punctual and available. He guided us with kindness and professionalism, supporting us in every decision, from the initial ideas to the big day, without ever overwhelming us. Special mention goes to the extraordinary willingness shown in adapting the menu to our needs, even the most specific ones. We wanted to offer a completely vegan option (not easy, we realize!), so almost for fun, I submitted a draft menu myself. The result? The chef was able to reproduce and perfect every dish proposed, transforming an idea into a surprising reality. Even today, we receive compliments from friends and family about the quality and originality of the dishes, both for the vegan and omnivorous menus, both impeccable. And then there's the location... it's hard to describe in words. Overlooking the Murgia ravine, it offers a natural setting of rare beauty. The various terraces offer evocative corners for every moment of the day, making the entire experience truly magical. But beyond the excellence of the cuisine and the beauty of the location, what struck us most was the genuine care with which we were treated. We never felt like mere guests, but rather like a couple welcomed and understood in every detail. Every request, every doubt, every little detail was handled with care, patience, and that human touch that, in the end, truly makes all the difference. If we look back on our wedding today with a huge smile, much of the credit goes to Nunzio and the entire staff at Madonna della Stella. We wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking a wedding that is meticulously curated, authentic, and simply perfect.

Nestled in the heart of Gravina, the Santuario Madonna delle Grazie is a historic gem that beckons visitors with its stunning architecture and rich history. The facade features an impressive rose window framed by a carved eagle, showcasing the Giustiniani family's coat of arms—an extraordinary sight on a religious building. A short stroll leads you to the ancient Ponte Viadotto, an iconic Roman bridge offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city across the river.
(Translated by Google) IF. Monsignor Vincenzo Giustiniani, Genoese, but native of Chios (Aegean), bishop of Gravina (1593-1614), own pecunia posuit, erected this "illustrious temple" from the foundations in 1602, "ad instar Cathedralis". The central door has a rusticated architrave, round in shape with Corinthian capitals, on the architrave is an unfolded stone scroll. Above is a triangular gable with sloping lateral cornices which close the linear run of the entablature. Inside the tympanum is written: "PER FIDEM SPEM ET CHARITATEM". the tympanum forms the base of the central tower, forming part of the bishop's coat of arms which extends over the entire façade. In 1734 the Austrian troops camped there and during the Second World War it served as a barracks for the Italian motorized infantry, then used to store motorcycles. After much oblivion it was reopened for worship in 1951 by the bishop of Gravina Giovanni Maria Sanna who erected it into a parish the following year. The interior, defaced in 1652, was brought back to its origins in 1989. In the "Visit" of Bishop Ferrero we read that there was a single altar, the main one, which by order of Card. Orsini was demolished because it was dilapidated. On the altar which was redone there was a fresco with the figures of Saints Peter and Paul and the Virgin, the fresco was surrounded by a carved frame. A nave with twelve chapels - originally two side naves - with ribbed vaults, divided by round lunate arches. On the sides of these: stone medallions of the Apostles. Upon entering, on the left, the third chapel is dedicated to the fallen in war. On the right side of the main altar: statue of the Madonna della Grazia, crowned by John Paul II on 25 September 1991, in St. Peter's Square. (Original) S.E. Mons.

(Translated by Google) It is a Sanctuary Church built in 1602 by Monsignor Vincenzo Giustiniani, precisely to welcome the numerous pilgrims who flowed from the nearby villages to thank and ask the Madonna delle Grazie for the gift of being able to have a child to breastfeed. This is why the Madonna delle Grazie in the iconography is presented in the act of breastfeeding her son Jesus. The façade of this Parish - Sanctuary is unique in the whole world and reproduces in large size the coat of arms of the Giustiniani: a large eagle with spread wings that protects the castle below. In many tourist guides the monumental facade symbolizes the city of Gravina in Puglia itself. It is a constant destination for pilgrims and tourists who come from all over. The feast of the Madonna delle Grazie, preceded by a novena animated by all the parishes, is celebrated on September 8th every year. An outstanding view for your pizza with family or friends. The pizza is very tasty and the possibility to select which pizza dough you want is a very interesting idea. I think that it is more rare than unique. A part a little discussion with the waiter regarding his "weird" ideas about the world (a mix of maga, illuminati and pro-russian propaganda) the dinner went fine.

Castle
Located 59 kilometers into the route, Castello Svevo in Gravina in Puglia is an impressive medieval castle with a rich history. The castle was a favorite of Emperor Federico II due to its beautiful surroundings and was constructed under the supervision of the Florentine sculptor Fuccio. Although it suffered damage from an earthquake in 1456, it still exudes charm.
Wow
Gianfranco P — Google review
To start with, the site is normally closed. We could nevertheless enter luckily due to works undertaken that day. The Castel was a favourite place of the emperor Federico II grace to the surroundings and building which got constructed under the supervision of the Florentine sculptor Fuccio. The building itself shows only little defensive structures and got used as hunting seat. It got heavily damaged in the earthquake of 1456 and subsequently decayed. There has been done work in past to build access to the ruins and a parking place, which all is closed nowadays. As this structure still has potential from my view and could get partially restored, it would be great if local and regional authorities realize this and take steps to awake the site from its hibernation. 4 stars for the site, the architectural details (which can be seen in Castel Del Monte in full beauty). Minus for the bad overall state regarding archeological care, closed status and obvious lack of vision of local and regional authorities to develop the site.

From the road that connects Corato to Gravina you can see the imposing ruins of the Castle. Unfortunately, going up the street, there are no signs (they are folded and illegible) and the access door is bolted and inaccessible. Unacceptable. Two stars only for the historicity of the site. There are no closing times, we headed towards Gravina to look at this enchanting place, everything was beautiful until we returned around 7.30 to get the cars and return home. But unfortunately we were locked up like animals for more than an hour and a half, we didn't know how to get out, even with so much rain, luckily the police helped us get out and the owner didn't even apologize to us. Insignificant person without shame. How disgusting! The ambiance is beautifully designed, creating an inviting atmosphere for guests. Patrons rave about the inventive cocktails crafted by a friendly and attentive staff who are eager to tailor drinks based on individual preferences. While some have noted that the music can be a bit loud for casual conversations, it adds to the vibrant energy of this modern venue.

I strongly advise avoiding this restaurant, especially if you’re visiting as a TOURIST. There were no prices on the menu, and staff encouraged us to choose the most expensive options. The food did not seem fresh, and the antipasti (€20) was small and disappointing. When I questioned the bill, they told me it was MY PROBLEM THAT I COULDN’T SPREAK ITALIAN! Overall, lunch for two cost nearly €100, which felt unreasonable for the quality provided. This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had!

Hours on google maps are not correct - we came „too early“ and were sent away hungry.. Edit: the restaurant states that it is open from 12:30 on and we arrived at that time. We were sent away because we were „too early“, not because it was full. Literally no one else was there. So I don’t think the problem was that we had no reservation

Casa Museo della "COLA COLA" in Gravina in Puglia is the ancestral home of the family that has been making Cola Cola, a type of bird-shaped clay whistle, for five generations. The museum showcases the family's creations and offers visitors a glimpse into their history and tradition. Visitors can explore the laboratory, bedroom, kitchen, and living room where the family's works are displayed.

The artefacts are small masterpieces of local craftsmanship, whose value is amplified immeasurably by the fervor with which Marco explained to us the meaning of each of them and the centenary history behind such a deeply felt tradition. The tour of his great-grandparents' house, perfectly preserved and embellished with original pieces from the period that they particularly care about, combined with the story of the memories experienced directly by Marco, make everything an essential experience if you pass through Gravina (moreover, a city truly exceptional!). The Campanile della Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta is the main church of Gravina, easily accessible on foot. It showcases a blend of Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque styles due to its rich history of construction and restoration. The tower offers a stunning panoramic view of the historic center of Gravina in Puglia and once housed prison cells during the 17th century. Visitors can arrange to visit the bell tower through the Cathedral Office for an unforgettable experience.
Great experience with the guided tour(can buy tickets from the visitor center) to the bell tower, the view is beautiful.

Chiesa del Purgatorio (Santa Maria del Suffragio)

Church
Chiesa del Purgatorio (Santa Maria del Suffragio) is a charming little church located on a square near the cathedral. Visitors can learn about its rich history and connection to Benedict XIII and the Orcini family in exchange for a small donation. The church houses unimaginable treasures, including a Neapolitan-style altar that alone makes the visit worthwhile. A knowledgeable guide is available to explain the beauties of the church, reflecting a dedication to local cultural heritage.
(Translated by Google) The most beautiful thing was the elderly volunteers who explained the curiosities of the place to us - for example the fact that poor people were buried under the Church and this explains the brick skulls outside - a beautiful example of valorisation of the cultural heritage that ha. The church is nice even if not spectacular but it is precisely hearing it narrated by the volunteers that makes it special and in my opinion motivates the very high number of votes in these reviews. You can give a free offering at the end of the short visit and due to the passion of the volunteers you are really willing to give it. They also gave us directions on what to see around Gravina.

(Translated by Google) The Church of Purgatory is a Baroque architectural gem located in the historic center of Gravina in Puglia, halfway between the cathedral and the Ducal Palace and opposite the Finia Library, the oldest in the region. The Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio is commonly known as the Church of Purgatory. It is also known as the Ducal Church, as it was built in the mid-17th century by order of the Dukes of Gravina, Ferdinando III of Orsini and his wife Giovanna della Tolfa. Its construction took five years, beginning in 1649. The church was originally intended to be the private funeral chapel of the Orsini family, dedicated to the patronage of Saint Mary of Suffragio, for the purpose of celebrating Masses for the salvation of souls in purgatory. This type of church is quite common both in this region of Puglia and in southern Italy in general, dedicated to worship and prayer for the salvation of the souls of the deceased. The main portal, built with regular limestone ashlars, has a completely white facade, with the entrance portal particularly notable. The door is flanked by two columns formed by three small columns with superimposed towers resting on bases shaped like three bears, a reference to the Orsini family. Above these columns is a broken pediment supported by two skeletons lying on their sides and looking toward the sky, a clear allegory of death and symbolizing the transience of earthly life. Above the door lintel is a large panel with an inscription commemorating the names of the dukes who ordered the church's construction, as well as the coat of arms of the Orsini-Tolfa family crowned with the ducal crown. The entire façade is framed by six simple pilasters attached to the wall and topped in the central section by an entablature that raises a second level with an oculus and a pediment decorated with subtle volutes reminiscent of clouds, symbolizing the passage to the afterlife. Around the building, you can see several Latin inscriptions that reminded the 17th-century population of the fragility of human life and the inevitability of death, encouraging them to meditate and take advantage of their journey through life to reach Paradise in the afterlife. Phrases such as 'quod tu es ego fui' (what you are, I was) or 'tu eris quod ego sum' (you will be what I am) are inscribed. The church has a single nave with a central chapel and six side chapels, three on each side. The central chapel features a magnificent polychrome marble altar inlaid with lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl, with a reredos consisting of a 17th-century painting of Our Lady of Suffrage by the Italian painter Francesco Guarini, and five other small portraits surrounding it, painted by Andrea Miglionico in the 18th century. Two niches with tuff stone sculptures stand out on either side of the altar. Among the side chapels, the Chapel of the Annunciation stands out, with the mausoleum of Duke Ferdinando III Orsini, who died of the plague shortly after the church's completion. In the center of the nave is a beautiful round dome with an oculus in its central section, adorned with plasterwork and supported by a drum with eight windows that lend ample light to the interior. Also noteworthy inside are the 18th-century wooden pulpit and the choir stalls above the entrance door, featuring a late 18th-century organ in a distinctly Baroque style. Currently, this church has been deconsecrated and houses a small museum of sacred art with interesting paintings and goldsmithing, and is also used for temporary cultural exhibitions. This church is well worth visiting for its great artistic and architectural value.

Bosco Difesa Grande is a captivating Mediterranean forest boasting an impressive diversity of plant and animal life. This remarkable wildlife park is known for its abundance of flora and fauna, including six out of the eight oak species found in Italy. It offers an exquisite sanctuary for those seeking a connection with untamed nature and the freedom it brings. Moreover, this fantastic place allows visitors to indulge their desire for exploration amidst breathtaking landscapes, without compromising on their yearning for true wilderness.

(Translated by Google) Excellent restaurant located in the central square of Gravina in Puglia, consisting of an interior and an external dehor overlooking the street. A new and modern structure but in harmony with the territory, it offers excellent revisited cuisine, but which does not stray too far from tradition. Inside there is a large glass display where all the local cookable products are highlighted and where you can order directly from there. The staff is kind, friendly and helpful, ready to please. On the walls you can see great pride but also blackboards where there is a menu with the prices displayed.

(Translated by Google) A traditional cuisine as the name suggests, the chef has a long experience and pours it into his dishes. Some are pleasant creations, others are more or less tasty local proposals (I would give more personality to homemade desserts for example). The bright, not huge room with counter and open kitchen enjoys a central and favorable position for the passage of customers, in summer it boasts an outdoor patio. Very friendly staff. Recommended place. Personale molto cordiale. Posto consigliato.

(Translated by Google) Great place, friendly staff, excellent dishes, typical gravina appetizers, especially based on porcini mushrooms (for true mushroom connoisseurs it's an excellent place). Wines and other drinks paired perfectly with the dishes. "Small" but very modern location!! What can I say, in the end we tasted a truly excellent fruit cake at pastry level!!!

(Translated by Google) We had a wonderful meal. We recommend this place. We came across this restaurant by chance, and blessed with luck. They cook with fresh produce. And they have everything available at the counter. For starters, an appetizer was a very fresh and tasty octopus and cuttlefish salad. And for the first course, a delicious seafood platter. Hearty dishes. And well-priced. (Original) Que bien comimos. Restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Gravina in Puglia, Osteria Al Cardoncello is a delightful culinary destination that showcases the best of Italian cuisine. Under the expert guidance of Chef Sabino Lucarelli, this eatery prides itself on using fresh, organic ingredients sourced from its own garden. With a menu that highlights local specialties and handmade pasta, diners can expect an authentic taste experience. The inviting atmosphere makes it perfect for both casual meals and special occasions.
Typical restaurant in Gravina, Apulia, but especially with typical cuisine. The chef is really good and nice he took care of us right away. Sliced meat served on lava stone and a sweet sour stuffed pasta entreé. Excellent price Local simple but typical

amazing place, they were opened at noon already and we had an amazing course of local antipasto and very tender chicken for the kid.

We were in Italy for two weeks and this place was both our absolute favorite restaurant we ate at! The food, the staff, everything about it was awesome. I would give them my highest recommendation and will go there again and look forward to it. We don't eat a lot so a five course meal was not going to happen, they made it special for us and I can still taste it, this place is the raffle deal.
Ralph S — Google review
The food is not bad, but the price is extremely ridiculous. This place seems to see themselves as those high end ones with no menu. However, the way they run this restaurant lacks transparency and the interior has zero high-end touch. Still, if you don’t care about being rubbed and you just want something eatable, this can be the right place.

An extraordinary traditional meal of the most enjoyable kind. Carlo created an array of delightful appetizers, fresh ricotta with peppery salsa, eggs with fresh truffles, eggplant gratin with cheeses, and five or six more,, just as special. Followed by pasta with mushrooms and sausage, and a light, lemon custard pastry to top it all off. We cannot wait to return!
Valerie N — Google review
The waiter was somewhat pushy, encouraging us to order the antipasti without even showing us the menu. While I was away for a moment, my partner—being too polite—agreed to the staff’s recommendation. We later found out the antipasti cost us €50. I’m honestly stunned! Compare to our dinner at another restaurant, it is too expensive!
