The Basilica of Esztergom, also known as the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Vojtech, is a grand neoclassical church located on Castle Hill in Hungary. It was constructed between 1822 and 1856 to replace its 12th-century predecessor that was destroyed by the Turks. The basilica's central dome stands at an impressive height of 72 meters and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
The church is very simple in the inside, however the size from the outside will baffle you. The size in the picture doesn’t do justice. Look closely at people next to the columns. You will then understand the size. It is a beautiful church. You get a great view from the Slovakia side of the bridge.

The Basilica of Esztergom is a truly magnificent and unmissable sight. As the largest church in Hungary, its sheer scale and grandeur are absolutely breathtaking from the moment you approach it. The stunning neoclassical architecture makes a powerful statement, and the sense of history is palpable, given its role as a key religious and historical site in Hungary. Stepping inside, the vast interior is just as impressive, with its grand altar, beautiful frescoes, and a serene atmosphere. However, the absolute highlight is the climb to the top of the dome. The panoramic 360-degree views of the Danube River, Esztergom city, and the Štúrovo on the Slovakian side are simply spectacular. A visit to the crypt and the Treasury (with its stunning collection of religious artifacts) is also highly recommended. This basilica is not just a church; it's a historical landmark and an architectural masterpiece that offers a profound and memorable experience.

The Esztergom Basilica is truly breathtaking — one of Hungary’s most impressive landmarks! Standing high above the Danube, it offers incredible panoramic views of both Hungary and Slovakia. Inside, the vast dome and detailed artworks are simply stunning, and the main altar painting is actually the largest single-canvas altarpiece in the world! Don’t miss visiting the Panorama Café at the top — it’s free to go up, and the views with a coffee are unforgettable. A must-see when exploring Esztergom!
Kata G — Google review
Absolutely stunning and majestic place! The Esztergom Basilica stands beautifully by the Danube River with breathtaking architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. Offers a wide panoramic view of the city and the Mária Valéria Bridge connecting Hungary and Slovakia. The interior is grand and spiritual, perfect for history and architecture lovers. A must-visit spot in Esztergom, especially during sunset! 🌅

We stopped here on a river cruise- we’d never heard of this place before but we will never forget it now and its interesting history and its imposing basilica. It’s definitely worth getting a tour so you can learn some of the fascinating history & interesting stories behind the facades. Plus you can walk to Slovakia and back !

🇬🇧 Esztergom – Hungary Situated on the right bank of the Danube, directly along the Slovak border, Esztergom is a city where history speaks from every street, and the soul of Hungary feels almost tangible. It is one of the country’s oldest and most iconic cities — a symbol of statehood and of the nation’s spiritual heritage. Archaeological findings show that the area of modern-day Esztergom has been inhabited since ancient times. Different peoples — Celts, Romans, Huns, Avars, and Germanic tribes — all left their mark here, adding their own layers to the landscape. During the Roman era, the settlement was known as Solva or Salvio Mansio. After the Hungarian conquest in the 10th–11th centuries, Esztergom became one of the key centers of the emerging Hungarian state: Prince Géza chose it as his seat of power, and his son Vajk (later King Stephen I, canonized Saint Stephen) was baptized and crowned here. During the Árpád dynasty, Esztergom was not only a political and royal center but also the spiritual heart of Hungary — it was from here that much of the country’s ecclesiastical life was organized. For a long time, it also served as the royal capital, until the mid-13th century, when the court and administration gradually moved to Buda and other cities. The city has witnessed wars and sieges as well: in 1543, Esztergom fell to the Ottoman Empire after a long siege. Many buildings and monuments were destroyed, yet even today the layers of history remain visible among the ruins and restored sites. The Basilica — Hungary’s largest church — is the crown of Esztergom. Built in the 19th century in classical style, with its monumental dome, vast interior, and ornate decorations, it dominates both the skyline and the spirit of the city. Behind the basilica rises Castle Hill, home to the remains of the ancient royal palace, fortifications, and the Castle Museum. The exhibitions here guide visitors through Esztergom’s story — from Roman times through the Middle Ages, the Ottoman period, and into modern history. The Víziváros (“Watertown”) district by the Danube offers a true journey through time with its narrow streets, fort walls, traces of Turkish baths and mosques, and the imposing Primatial Palace / Christian Museum. The Christian Museum holds Hungary’s largest ecclesiastical art collection, featuring medieval altarpieces, sculptures, liturgical treasures, and artworks from across Europe. The Bakócz Chapel, a rare Renaissance gem from the 16th century, was preserved and later integrated into the basilica itself. Baroque and classical churches, elegant stone houses, and ornate squares complete the city’s historical character. Despite wars and transformations — from the Ottoman era to the world wars — Esztergom has always rebuilt itself and continued to thrive. After the Treaty of Trianon, it became a border town, losing territory but never its culture, sanctity, or symbolic strength. As a guide, I see Esztergom not as a museum city, but as a living witness to Hungary’s struggles, faith, and artistry. For anyone seeking a deeper connection to Hungary’s roots — spiritually, architecturally, or emotionally — Esztergom is essential. — Krisztina 🌊 Local Guide

When you enter the Basilica, you are surrounded by a completely different atmosphere. The descriptions about its history are excellent, and the treasury is also very interesting- it’s worth taking the time to look through everything and read the related sources. The view from the dome is fabulous. The crypt, on the other hand, brings yet another completely different mood with it.
Dominika G — Google review
This is fantastically maintained place, of great cultural and religious importance. We have been there with 2 kids, enjoyed everything. You can see the church and park for free, we also payed to go in to the tower and tomb. The price was OK. People there were nice and helped us with everything. Everything is well organised here. There is a chic coffee place in the building, and many shops, and thanks to this even people who are not religious can enjoy the place. There are foodtrucks outside, so you will not leave hungry. But the church itself is more than enough, we hope to come here again, also to see the city beneath the church (Vizivaros). During sundays there is regular church service, so you cant get inside all of the time, but there are a lot of other things to see during that time. It is actually fantastic, that you can still come here to join the mass.

Restaurant
Primate of Esztergom Cellar and Restaurant is a charming establishment with a unique atmosphere that takes you back in time. The staff is known for their exceptional service, making guests feel welcome and well taken care of. While some may find the prices slightly high for Hungary, many agree that the experience and quality make it worthwhile. The cuisine receives high praise, with a varied menu offering delicious options from main dishes to desserts.
We had a delicious early dinner here that was easily one of the best we had on our trip to Hungary. The cellar is big and imposing but cozy at the same tIme and the staff makes you feel welcomed here. The star of the show was the duck leg, one of the best we had this trip (the desserts are also extremely tasty).

This restaurant is excellent in many ways. First the location and atmosphere, right below biggest basilica in Hungary. Second, the fuud is delicious and they also have menu for kids. We come back for sure.

Atmosphere is perfect, especially during summer! Food is great, I am speechless. Dessert is great as well. Constructive criticism would be the waiter/waitress could have smiled more and be more friendly, but I get that they were busy! So overall score 💯/ 💯
Tuguldur T — Google review
Atmosphere is superp and romantic. The waiters are attentive. The food was fresh and delicious, especially the dessert is five out of five!

Absolutely delightful. The inside is marvelous, foods are seriously amazing! Though it is advised to eat the pork shoulder w/ onion and potatoes fresh, don't wait midtime like me who messaged on the phone instead. 😅

What a wonderful surprise, worth the trip from Budapest alone. Beautiful cellar location and great staff. The food however is the star, a complete surprise, the best restaurant meal I've had in Hungary and such great value for money. You must try it.

Perched high above the Danube on a cliff, Esztergom Castle is a historic stronghold with vast grounds offering scenic views. The castle, dating back to the 11th century, houses a cultural museum that provides insight into its rich history. Visitors can embark on an immersive journey through time, exploring the centuries-old artifacts and treasures within the castle's walls.
Excellent place to stop by. Went with a guided tour, heard interesting history facts. There is possibility to visit dome tour(6€), inner church area(free), treasury exposition (6€). Recommended

A good castle, not big. The most beautiful thing about the castle is the view from it. A very beautiful view of the Danube and the city.
Margarita Z — Google review
We didn’t go inside the castle, but just walking around the grounds was totally worth the visit. The area around it is peaceful and full of charm, and the views over the Danube and the city are absolutely stunning. The castle itself looks really impressive from the outside—lots of history in those walls, for sure. If you’re in Esztergom, it’s a great spot for a scenic walk, some photos, and soaking up the atmosphere without needing a ticket.

It's very good. Nice view. Constructed in the tournament of a Hill. Looks very Vintage

A beautiful place, and the city is truly worth visiting. The people here are surprisingly kind much more welcoming than in other parts of Hungary.
Sawsan H — Google review
Castle and Danube with town view from top of castle are amazing. We could not enter museum part, as it was closed on monday. I strongly recommend visitors to take a walk at old town streets and Danube shore, it is peaceful. Only thing I didn’t like is the giant basilica competing with the old castle (which is built on top of it)

Csülök Csárda is a highly recommended restaurant in the region, offering an array of delicious dishes. The goulash, filet mignon, traditional ham options, and desserts are all flavorsome choices. With an average price of 50 EUR including water and 2 beers, it's a great value for money. However, some customers noted that the service was cold and slow. Nonetheless, Csülök Csárda provides a fair selection of vegetarian options on their menu.
Super delicious! Lemonade was excellent. Raspberry soup is to die for. We also had the fish soup, cucumber soup, & pork medallions. Pork medallions were the most spiced item my dinner guest has had in all of Hungary! Highly recommend! Service was also fantastic and friendly.

My 1st Hungarian food experience and let me tell you they set the bar high. I had borsh and asked the waiter to suggest their best food. I am not disappointed. You are served in an arched cellar and the food comes fast and is delicious. 100% recommend.
Geoffrey W — Google review
I’ve been to many Csardas and I honestly love all of them. This one is my least favorite for now. I can only say- “nothing special”. Food selection as expected in Csárda, but the quality and overall atmosphere is somewhat lacking. My friend who visited Hungary for the first time loved it, nonetheless 😎
Ivan J — Google review
Good location, very close to the basilica. Friendly and quick service. The food was absolutely delicious.
Jozsef C — Google review
This is the very best Hungarian restaurant which I have tried! The menu didn’t follow the usual Hungarian menues with all the deep fried meat. Instead, this place is specialised to a special part of the pork, but all the other pieces on the menu were quite unique; not the most common Hungarian dishes. The waiters were not shy to recommend against something: for example in our case when the salad didn’t fit to the main course, but they were doing it in a very polite way. The portions are decent and the taste was super-super good! The meats were tender and juicy and just delicious! We are going to come back for sure!
Gyorgyi B — Google review
Loved all the unique options and flavors. Wish we had a bigger party to try what we saw other tables had ordered.

We really enjoyed our time here! The atmosphere was great, and the service was friendly. We tried three different dishes, and all of them were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

Great service. 4.5 stars, tempted to put it on 5-star but need to be credible. Wonderful location. Recommended for Hungarian food by my Hotel. As a tourist, who knows, but Menu available in English had new/interesting food for me. Had Hungarian Goulash which was great, and Ham Knuckle Crepe with Ox Tongue and Mushroom sauce as a new experience. It was REALLY good. Great ambiance outside. Heard mostly Hungarian and Slovak spoken. Seemed legit.

We have come here twice during our short stay in Esztergom and would gladly return. Friendly and enthusiastic personnel, delicious local food and cozy halls. I absolutely loved the traditional fisherman’s soup with catfish, as well as the Jókai soup with beans and meat.

Gulyash was very tasty! But stuffed chicken and nyoki were made ahead of time and just warmed before serving. Service on a good level. Too many artificial flowers.
Ann S — Google review
Fantastic fish soup (catfish) — easily the best I’ve ever had. I also tried the fried goose liver. While it was delicious, I honestly couldn’t distinguish it from chicken liver in taste or size — which left me a bit unsure. Still, overall, a great experience.
Liya B — Google review
Had a lovely meal at this restaurant in Esztergom. The staff were very attentive and spoke English (helpful as I don’t speak Hungarian). I had the Hungarian goulash and a Hungarian pancake and both were delicious.
Rose D — Google review
The place is nice, I liked the decoration. I also appreciated the fact that the waiters were friendly and spoke English. We ordered two of the dishes that are for "two persons", which were ok, the grilled chicken stuffed with paprika and the chicken skewer covered with bacon were very good, as were the Gordon blue, fried cheese and mushrooms. However one of the chickens was too salty, and the accompanying potato chips were very tasteless . The soup was also very salty. And the fried sweet potatoes weren't that crispy Lastly, the portions were also good

Szent Adalbert Hotel 2 offers a princely breakfast with an extensive buffet menu at its house restaurant, providing a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. This boutique-like hotel is known for its cleanliness and well-maintained facilities, offering comfortable beds and perfect noise insulation for a relaxing stay. The location is fantastic, close to restaurants and the Basilica with picturesque views of the Danube. Guests can enjoy delicious breakfast buffets and take advantage of free private parking.
We've been here for one night only, but for sure will come back for longer stay. Young man at the reception (sorry I did not remember the name) was nice and helpful. Hotel has free parking with enough places. Also we saw the safe locked place for bikes at the parking. Hotel has great location - close to everything but quiet place. Room nice, would prefer balcony, but I knew there are no in this hotel, so ok. Breakfast great, I think everyone will find something to choose. Overall nice stay, as I said we will definitely come back for longer stay with our bikes :)

The hotel looks very new and is located very close to the cathedral. The hotel receptionist was very helpful and welcoming, helped us book the taxi to railway station. The breakfast was overall good. The room was tidy and comfortable. However few things can still be improved in the future. Inside the room there was no free water or kettle (considering that the hotel provides ready-in-place minibar). The shampoo and shower gel was provided in small paper plastic packages. It would be much better to put them in small plastic bottles for more convenient usage. Overall i would still recommend people to stay in this hotel for its great value for money.
Chongtian X — Google review
Fantastic location close to restaurants and the Basilica with picturesque views of the Danube. The hotel breakfast buffet was delicious. The shower head was broken when we checked in but the hotel fixed it the same day. The room layout made it seem smaller than it was - the clothes storage was between the door and washroom making for a lot of congestion when changing. The beds were very comfortable.
Craig L — Google review
Room cleaning was at the lowest i have ever experienced, the floor was vacuumed once a week and the sink was usually dirty. No restaurant in the hotel. To replace my dirty room glasses i had to place them in the corridor outside.
Michael B — Google review
Excellent location, walking distance to both the Basilika as well as the aqua bath, 3-4 restaurants in close proximity, free private parking. 24/7 access. Rooms are clean, comfy with good design, minibar available with reasonable prices. Facilities for children available, breakfast was great. Staff is helpful. We had a wonderful stay, my kid loved it and already plans the return trip.
Balazs H — Google review
It’s a nice boutique-like hotel. One of the cleanest hotels I’ve been to. Very well-maintained. Breakfast is basic but has good variety. The hotel offers dinner in a nearby fine dining restaurant. Beds are very comfortable. Noise insulation is perfect, we had a very relaxing stay. My only complaint is the pillow. Staff is nice however couldn’t really advise on local sights. If the hotel had a wellness section it would have been perfect.

The Rózsakert Étterem is a delightful restaurant near the basilica that offers a memorable dining experience. Celebrating a birthday here is sure to bring joy, as the staff members are incredibly kind and helpful. The food served is delicious, with the duck breast being particularly flavorful (though some may find it slightly too rose in taste). The overall lunch at this restaurant is pleasant, providing not only tasty dishes but also an impressive view of the Danube.
We came here celebrating my birthday, and we were not disappointed. The staff was extremely kind and helpful, and the food was also delicious (the duck breast was a little bit too rose for my taste, but it didn't really bother me). Overall we had a pleasant lunch. It is not cheap but you pay for the experience and the view to the Danube as well.

Food was delicious. Waiters were friendly. Interior is cozy. Great view. We (2) paid around 16eFt for two cans of tea, a bottle of water, two main dishes and two desserts. My gf (HU) said it was the best mangalica steak she ever had. Got also an amuse-gueule. Thus, great value at an affordable price.

What you have to understand is that this is a bistro style restaurant: which is exactly what I liked. The food was delicious and surprisingly quickly prepared. The staff was very kind. The unique, vibrant atmosphere—especially dining under a banana tree—made me feel like I was in Miami. I highly recommend this spot to anyone seeking exceptional, one-of-a-kind cuisine. Thank you for an incredible evening! (Plus dog friendly)

Extremely disappointing experience. As soon as we sat down, the (presumably) owner began listing specials without asking if we were interested — no prices, no menu, just a monologue. When we said we’d like to look at the menu ourselves, he seemed visibly annoyed. Later, we asked about local Hungarian beer and mentioned we preferred lagers. He dismissed our preference, saying it was the “worst beer.” What really crossed the line was when he stepped just a table away and began openly mocking us to a waitress and another guest — pointing, rolling his eyes. One young waiter noticed our discomfort and tried to smooth things over, but the damage was done. We stayed for a drink and some nachos (ok, nachos was ok), but the rude, condescending attitude left a terrible impression. Never returning. Judging by the empty tables on a Saturday night, we’re not the only ones.

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Danube-Ipoly National Park, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Hungarian Environment and Water Museum. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Hiking area
Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park offers a plethora of hiking trails that wind through lush forests, mountainous terrain, and picturesque river valleys. The park is also home to medieval castle ruins, including Ottoman roundels with stunning views extending into Slovakia across the Danube. Located just 50 kilometers from Budapest, the park provides a scenic drive and an ideal destination for families seeking outdoor adventures.
Definitely my favorite national park in Hungary! The two days I was there were truly unforgettable! It shows how beautiful the Hungarian nature is to the 100%. Exciting hiking trails, breathtaking sights (especially the Danube bend) and there's a high chance to meet wild animals like deers (but not bears or anyone dangerous really, so no need to be worried). Perfect for spending some time in nature, breathing fresh air and stay active!

Great and easy hiking to see an old movie set of a medieval castle. Can easily bike through it and a motor-cross field offers some awesome challenging bike runs.

Rám-szakadék is a breathtaking rocky canyon located in the picturesque mountains of Hungary. It features a stunning creek trail with waterfalls, ladders, and railings that make for an adventurous and fun hike. The narrow gorge offers towering rock walls and rushing waters, creating a unique natural wonder that captivates visitors. While the trail can be steep and muddy at times, it is suitable for beginners with some sections involving chains and railings for assistance.
Rám Szakadék is a stunning gorge that offers a scenic and enjoyable hiking experience. The obstacles along the trail are quite manageable, making it an ideal route for those looking for a bit of adventure. The green trail is equipped with ladders, adding an extra fun challenge while exploring the beautiful surroundings. However, caution is needed on rainy days, as the path can become quite slippery. This trail is not suitable for dogs or small children, but for adults, it’s an excellent choice for a memorable outdoor adventure.

Fantastic nature walk. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a map!

We went there as a group of friends. It was a lovely hike. There were a lot of ladders and places you had to climb through but it felt like a playground. It was so much fun we did not get tired at all! Suitable even for beginers like me. We went on a saturday so there was quite a group of people. If you can, definitely go there during week. Parking: there is a designated parking lot for tourists but the machine accepts only cash and coins in specific. You can NOT insert paper money into the machine and it does not accept credit card nor you can send a text to pay for the parking fee (only if you have a hungarian number). Don't worry, you can find places to park between the houses around. Just make sure you won't block any gate entrance. The restaurant near the parking lot is closed for good, but there are plenty more smaller pubs and restaurants on the way. There is also a free to use toilet near the parking lot.

I’d recommend to use waterproof and mud proof shoes. Bring lots of water, in one hike I finished 3L of water. Also bring food. There are fire places you can you if you would like to cook outside. The recommended age is from 10z Kids from 120 cm can do the hike as they can hold the bar handles and can garb onto the handles, ladders. My 7y old sister managed to do the hike as she could reach the handles. It may be closed after heavy rain. Check before heading out.

We started from [P] Dömös parkoló, taking the green route up through the Ram Szakadek and yellow down (Lukacs Akro). Great intermediate hike, not too crowded this time of year (end of September). It took us a bit less than 3 hours, while taking a short 15 minute break halfway. Good hiking shoes are definetely a plus, as it can be slippery and steep at times. I for sure recommend taking this hike!

Bodies of Water
Lake Palatinus, located in the Esztergom Dorog area, is a popular destination offering diverse activities. Half of the lake serves as a beach during summer, while the other side is ideal for diving and exploration, featuring an old sunken boat from the Danube. Although most beaches are privately owned, public access areas remain clean and well-maintained. The water temperature reaches around 20-22°C in summer, providing a pleasant swimming experience.
This is a very nice beach by the lake, with a pretty spectacular view on the surrounding hills.
Péter B — Google review
It is a great clear lake and it would be still better if not 3quarter of the beaches would owned by private entities. Was not like this before but it is what it is. Otherwise clean and tidy where it has access to to the public and great fishing lake too. Gets warm enough during the summer , around 20-22c. Great place to swim and relax on the beach to get some tanning. There is a big slide and some facilities allocated in one of the private side as a “public” swimming area and beach. Parking available right next to the lake at the fences but limited and paid.
ZoltanoMoltano — Google review
Beautiful lake 1 hour drive from Budapest. A bit crowded in hot summer days. Water are good and nice shadow areas. Good selection of food. Great value for money overall
Roy B — Google review
On the Dorog part the lake is inaccessible unless you pay, in Esztergom you can enter for free of charge but if you would like to come round, the path is locked so you have to turn back. Time consuming and infuriating.

Nestled in a less bustling area, Pizzeria Pizza Pala stands out with its modern design and inviting terrace. While the surroundings may not offer much in terms of activities, the ambiance inside is clean and pleasant. The staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring a smooth dining experience. Guests can indulge in unique pizzas like the "salmone" and "pala pizza," which break away from traditional toppings—offering an adventurous twist on classic flavors.
The pizza here is very different taste to other pizza places. But I mean it in the best way. We are travelling 3 hours just to eat this pizza. Love it everytime!
Nikol K — Google review
Nice food, prices are okay, a bit over average (for me). The place is easy to find, has a few parking places. If you’d like to have lunch it’s better to book a table.
Beatrix H — Google review
The food itself was good. Large portion (too large) and it tasted pretty good. Too expensive, though. But the service was catastrophically slow (there was only one waitress doing all the work and two other guys behind a counter doing absolutely nothing) And the place was uncomfortable and filthy. There were dried corn pieces ALL over the table (not fresh, they've been there for a few days at least) and there was a piece of random meat even under the table. If there was another option, I would have left instantly.
David — Google review
The location of the place, is not a good one, you don't really have what to do around there. The place itself is quite nice, clean with a modern design and nice terrace. Waiter was kind, friendly, funny and helpful. Service was fast, clean and smooth. We eat two different pizza's, the "salmone" and "pala pizza", I never had a pizza without pizza souce and cheese, until today. The salmone was a strange pizza, not bad but not for my taste. Otherwise, it's a nice place and not expensive. Enjoy

The Hungarian Environment and Water Museum in Esztergom is a fascinating exploration of the impact of water on human life. Situated by the Danube, the museum delves into topics such as flooding, river regulation, irrigation techniques, hydropower usage, wildlife conservation, dams, residential water supply, climate change and the history of mineral and carbonated water. Through interactive exhibits and informative displays, visitors gain an understanding of how environmental balance affects our lives.

Aqua Island Esztergom is a spa and wellness facility that offers pampering services, pools, slides, and relaxation. While it can be slightly crowded due to tourists, it provides various pools including a main pool (34 C), hot pool (36 C), and outdoor pool (36-38 C). The canteen may be overpriced with greasy smells but the facility is well-maintained. It's suitable for a fun day out with family on a hot day.
Third time that I come here. Beautiful, big, clean and modern. It has a restaurant and a bar and water slides for the kids. Food is very good and very good portions and prices. Nice and calm for the whole family or couples. I would definitely go again.
Ilias V — Google review
I visited with my family over the weekend. When we arrived in the morning, the parking lot was spacious and comfortable. However, since the parking lot entrance is shared with the hotel entrance, if you’re not focused, you might accidentally enter the hotel parking lot. You’ll need to wait for the parking attendant at the entrance, who will provide a parking pass for you to use. The indoor facilities were clean, and the water in the pool was well-maintained. I’m not sure if it was just on the day I visited, but most outdoor pools were unavailable except for the indoor pool. (It seemed that only one outdoor pool operates in winter.) Those looking for an outdoor heated pool may be disappointed. For some reason, cold air from outside continuously entered the indoor areas, especially near the restaurant. This made it quite chilly while waiting in line for lunch after swimming. The sauna facilities were pleasant, and the aroma of the oils was very satisfying. However, the space for sauna experiences seemed too small to accommodate many people comfortably. You can bring your parking ticket and pay for it when you settle the bill.
JaeHyeong J — Google review
A large water park with plenty of attractions, not just in the water. The whole complex is really big, with lots of pools both indoors and outdoors. Some of them are heated, usually taken over by retirees. Outside you’ll find a playground, a volleyball court, several bars, and of course water slides. Unfortunately, by September some of the attractions are already closed. The aquapark was built in the early 2000s, and sadly many elements show their age. Paint is peeling or rusting off the railings, the slides are faded from the sun and covered with a strange coating. The whole place could really use some renovation, though given its size, maybe that’s just not feasible. What really surprised me was that the main sports pool hadn’t been cleaned properly – the bottom was dirty with sand and small stones. They should definitely invest in pool vacuums, because the water itself was actually very clean. Overall, it’s a place with great potential. If managed well and combined with the nearby hotel, it could easily become a more luxurious destination.
Mateusz W — Google review
Great place for swimming with kids, offering ample space for everyone. The swimming pools are clean and warm. During weekdays, it wasn't crowded. The two large slides were fun and not scary at all for my kids (ages 5 and 10). However, the outdoor slide and wave pool were closed on May 28, 2024. "-" One challenge we faced was ordering food at the buffet. The staff doesn't speak English, and there is no English menu. It would be easier if they offered self-catering options or had English-speaking staff. "-" Additionally minus, there are no saunas or steam rooms where you can be with kids. Ability of curtains in the shower rooms is plus. But In the WC and in the shower there were no soap.
Viktoriia M — Google review
There are too many kids everywhere and the aquapark areal is mostly for children. One of the water slides isn't well maintained and is super scratchy (the yellow one). Water isn't deep anywhere so you can't swim at all at least a few meters. The water has too much chlorine and is uncomfortable for the skin. The sauna and wellness part is horrible, unless you want to see random naked people. Absolutely zero privacy and I don't understand why would you need to be naked for a jacuzzi.
Michaela F — Google review
What a shame that this place is incapable of informing customers that they’re closed for a whole week. We came from Budapest and found at the entrance that they’re closed. We were confused, because Google doesn’t say they’re temporarily closed and while checking their website days prior, there was no notification that they’re currently closed. We had to scroll down pages and specifically look for news to find that they’re closed. Many other families also had the same surprise…. Incredibly unprofessional. It takes 2 minutes to change the Google info to closed and probably the same to make a visible pop up announcement on the website so people don’t travel an hour or more just to be at a closed door.
Tata — Google review
This aqua island is a well organized, modern looking complexum of several pools, bubble pools. Lot of experiences can be found there as wave pool, drifting, four kind of slippers, thermal pool, pool for babies with toys etc Indoor and open air pools connects to each others. The sun loungers, chairs are available for free, it's a big adventage. The lockers and toilets quite tidy, there's good system for the safe. You can request chip watch locking your cupboard (deposit required - 1000 HUF) Disadvantages: the floors are very slippery everywhere, non-slip carpet is missing so this way potential danger for injury. The open air buffet is overpriced, but the indoor "self-services" restaurant offers a good meal in good portion and price. Summarized: I was satisfied with my family to be here! Thanks for all!

We visited this pizza place in Esztergom on the 20th of August (national holiday in Hungary) and we expected places to be closed or fully booked. This pizza place had plenty of free tables including at the terrace. My partner had a meaty pizza with enough lettuce on top to hide all the goodies from this photo. I had the vegetarian cream sauce, mushroom, and Parmesan cheese. Very tasty. We ordered an Edelweiss (wheat beer) and a Soproni IPA, but unfortunately the IPA was not cold at all so we had to send it back and replace it with another Edelweiss. Excellent service. Not very cheap but also not very expensive.

Okay pizza, friendly service. Good for a quick lunch
Balint R — Google review
Service was OK, caesar salad very good, pizza was mediocre at best. If you want good pizza go elsewhere. Otherwise I can recommend.

Friendly and helpful staff, delicious courses (esp. the bacon wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese)!

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
The Mária Valéria Bridge, a 19th-century structure, has been renovated twice and now features a pedestrian walkway offering stunning views of two countries. It serves as a symbolic link between Hungary and Slovakia, providing an opportunity to experience the contrast in culture and atmosphere between the two nations. Despite its simple function as a bridge, it holds historical significance and offers an immersive experience for visitors. Plaques at both ends provide information about its history.
We walked from Basilica of Esztergom to this bridge and it was a great experienced. The bridge that connects Hungary and Slovakia ❤️

A beautiful and historic bridge connecting Esztergom (Hungary) and Štúrovo (Slovakia) 🌉🇭🇺🇸🇰. Walking across gives you stunning views of the Danube River 🌊, the Basilica towering over Esztergom 🏛️, and the charming riverside towns. It’s peaceful and perfect for sunset walks 🌅 or taking photos 📸. No border control—just cross freely and enjoy two countries in one trip 🌍. A must-visit spot for its views, history, and relaxed vibe 🚶‍♂️💙.

Beautiful bridge to walk across! The Mária Valéria Bridge connects Hungary and Slovakia with no border checks, making it a pleasant cross-country walk. It’s built over the Danube River and offers stunning views of the Esztergom Basilica and the wide Danube. Perfect spot for peaceful evening or sunset walks with breathtaking scenery on both sides.

Amazing view of basilica from here! You can step on the HU Slovakia border and be in 2 countries at a time.
Sarfaraz A — Google review
The bridge has an interesting history, and is well worth walking across over the Danube.
Péter S — Google review
You can walk through the bridge from Slovenia to Slovakia, which is amazing experience ha, also u can get a view of the castle n church from the opposite side.
Chris C — Google review
The Mária Valéria Bridge in Štúrovo is a graceful steel‑truss gateway spanning the Danube and linking Slovakia to Hungary. Opened in 1895 and rebuilt after wartime destructions in 1926 and again in 2001, it measures roughly 500 m in length and 12 m across, with five uneven spans born of riverbed constraints . Today, it offers a seamless pedestrian crossing with no border checks, since both countries joined Schengen in 2007 . Walking across provides panoramic views of Esztergom’s hilltop cathedral and castle, making it a photogenic and symbolic connector of cultures . A short, scenic stroll that impresses with its history and vistas—a must‑visit when in Štúrovo.

Hamburger restaurant
Farm Burger & BBQ is a charming spot with tempting food photos on the menu, making it a great choice for a meal. The retro-style burgers served in shiny sesame buns offer both classic and innovative flavor combinations like the pineapple-bacon Baceyout Burger and the double patty Farm Brutal with mango curry sauce. Despite its small size, there are outdoor seats available, and even though English may not be widely spoken, the staff is friendly and accommodating.
Great place, quite small, but they have a few seats outside. The lady serving didn't speak English, but between my amateur Hungarian and her using google translate on her phone, we were able to communicate, despite the language barrier she was extremely helpful. The burgers are a very generous size, the meat cooked medium-rare as it should be and the bread was very fresh

Wow! Great place. We were so lucky to find this in this city at the borders. We had special burger (vegetarian with goat cheese from local farm) which was really great. The we had basic one and one "Italian" - I don't know the correct name. But that was the best one. We also had fries - I prefer the sweet ones :) we had that lemonade and it was also great ! Maybe just a bit sweeter. We got some donuts with fillings, but the burgers we so much better ^^ The personal we had (2guys) were nice and speaking English. They told us everything we needed to decide. There are 6 bar chairs to sit on inside. Next time I will come here again, that's for sure.
Vojtěch L — Google review
This place is super awesome despite the other review before. We ate some delicious burgers and didn't want stop eating. So if you're ever in town after visiting the cathedral for instance, this burgertent is a no brainer! The sweet fries are heavenly.

hamburgers were delicious! small but cozy space. there is one vegan option. the menu is in Hungarian only so bring a translation tool if you don't speak the language.

The best burger we ever had, would recommend to everyone. Reasonable pricing and big portions. The staff was very nice and welcoming.

The food is amazing! Tiny place, but the employees are kind.

The food was absolutely delicious. The service was very friendly and price was acceptable. I have to give you 5 stars and I hope we'll see you again soon.

Unexpectedly great burger place in the center of Esztergom. Prices are moderate, there is a large variety of burgers (despite the relatively few menu items), and the taste is just fantastic! Service is really nice amd friendly too. I will definitely be back to try more, highly recommended if you are in the area!

I drove 1,5 hrs just to have a breakfast here. I already decided I’ll have an “Irish breakfast” with coffee. I’m not satisfied. Food: good price, avarage quality. I expected a bit bigger portion, and the eggs weren’t so good. Service: the staff is constantly talking loudly, and they are eating at the tables which are supposed to be for the customers. They were eating nachos right next to me, and I had to listen to their private life stories while “enjoying” my meal... Also, not all are kind enough and they act like they are at home and do whatever they want. Really annoying. All in all: sit outside if you want to have a great time. Don’t have too much expectations, good for students.

Restaurant
Mediterraneo Étterem is a top choice for large family lunches and dinners. It offers a comfortable interior, terrace seating, and stunning views at the foot of the bridge from Esztergom to Sturovo/Parkany. While its name may suggest a focus on Mediterranean cuisine, the menu actually offers a diverse range of dishes, catering to those who enjoy traditional favorites as well as gourmet options.
Lovely service, gorgeous food, I had the Sirloin steak, and my friend had Salmon. Desert delicious fried ice cream. Well worth the money.

One of the best restaurants we ever visited. Service -excellent. Environment - great. Food - amazing. Special cook's soup, sweets, lemonades... everything.

Very good restaurant in the heart of Esztergom. They serve special seasonal dishes, we ordered lamb confi and it was tender and delicious. My fish file was also nice and we were loaded with food! Garlic shrimp appetizer is what I recommend for starters. Very good local wine.
Jenia T — Google review
Really great food with amazing service. Wide array of food and drinks. Definitely make this a place to experience. We really appreciated being able to converse in English.
Colette S — Google review
I had a lunch with my family in this restaurant. The name confused me a bit, because there were no Mediterranean dishes in the menu. The food was good, except dry meat in all the dishes that we tried. The service was friendly and helpful.
Margarita G — Google review
Best cold cherry soup and delicious pork on letcho. Nice atmosphere.
Viktor S — Google review
I have had a rather good time there to end my Hungarian trip with my family. The restaurant is located in a beautiful area very close to historical landmarks, and the restaurant itself also looks stylish, elegant but not necessarily posh which probably helps a lot to feel cozy. The food quality was good, service (especially from this handsome waiter from last night) made sure we all have fun too, and additionally the prices were quiet right too with a range of dishes and beverages.

Szalma Csárda is an unpretentious eatery adorned with wooden beams that offers a straightforward, seasonal inn and a patio. Situated by the grand church on the hill, this delightful Hungarian restaurant impresses with its delectable cuisine and reasonable prices. Its family-style service is impeccable and accommodates various languages, including Australian English, which they even took the time to teach some Hungarian phrases in return.
Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely restaurant The service is unmatched. The staff truly cares about your experience. The food is absolutely amazing – everything we tasted melted in other mouths. Absolutely the best meal Highly recommended
Aman K — Google review
I had a very good lunch here. A tasty gulasch, which came in very fast. People complain about the environment, which I think is beautiful and gives the place charm.
Solle S — Google review
Szalma Csárda has a lovely old-style interior and warm atmosphere. The food was tasty, but only a buffet was available when I visited. At 8,000 HUF, it felt pricey—I would have preferred ordering from a menu.
Rad G — Google review
Lovely tradition hungarian restaurant on the Danube near the big church on the hill. Very nice food good value and family style service excellent and multi lingual. They understand Aussie and taught us some Hungarian
Wendy S — Google review
Waiter had limited English however managed to order correctly and food was local and good quality. Open views across the Denube in a quiet area of town
David V — Google review
Food was quite okay, but it was no menu to read. The waiter told us it’s a buffet, but it was not a lot of choice and no information about the price so we paid 50 euros for just two small plates. Not fair and definitely not good value for the money.
Zofia S — Google review
Food was OK and cheap, at a nice location, but staff is pretty unmotivated and unattentive...
