Barcis in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Barcis, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Barcis is a small alpine village known for its emerald-green lake set among the forests and peaks of the Valcellina valley in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Visitors come for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and water sports, as well as for peaceful lakeside walks and viewpoints. The historic Valcellina Gorge nearby offers scenic trails and a famous suspended walkway. Barcis also serves as a quiet base for exploring traditional mountain villages and nature reserves in the surrounding Dolomites foothills.
With favorites like Diga Ponte Antoi, Inizio Sentiero del Dint (CAI 997), and Osteria Ponte Antoi, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Osteria Ponte Antoi and Celis S.R.L. so you can get the best taste of Barcis while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Lago di Bàrcis, nestled at the base of the Friulian Dolomites, is a picturesque spot offering stunning views of its emerald waters against a backdrop of majestic mountains. The lake's tranquil atmosphere and clear, turquoise waters create a charming and relaxing environment for visitors. Surrounded by lush greenery and walking paths, it's an ideal place to spend a leisurely day.
This is definitely the place to be at if you want a nice calm stroll around a lake or body of water with the turquoise water! It was very midday so I was glad I had tenis shoes on and didn’t go down to the water! It has its 2 own parking areas and also a hiking to the lake across the bridge.

Very beautiful lake, mountain scenery and town with restaurants and promenade. Lake may be drained in winter.
Andrea C — Google review
Beautiful spot to spend the day. The lake of Barcis is surrounded by beautiful mountains that make the scenery just magic. When the water is high (and it's important to keep in mind that this is a semi-artificial lake and sometimes it might not be full, as in the first pictures), the landscape becomes a perfect mix of turquoise waters and green woods. There is plenty of things to do: taking a walk around the old town of Barcis, walking across it's bridge, visiting the old road + the Tibetan bridge (this has a cost of 3€/person + 3€/person if you want to do the bridge), take a walk around Sentiero del Dint and see the lake from different perspectives (this is free and my favourite), etc. Highly recommended!
Nuria E — Google review
Nice little lake tucked in the mountains. We took bread and fed the birds, had a pick nick and then explored. Went around the lake multiple times. Water was down but lots of construction in the area. It was great for a nice relaxing afternoon away from the towns.

Beautiful Lake! Areas for families to bbq and children to play. Hiking 🥾 trails and shallow areas for children to swim.

Must visit if in area. But tourist train ride and hike in Cellina gorge is closed on weekdays till july.

Fantastically beautiful! Blue green seren water set against a backdrop of old layered mountains. Crisp cool mountain air even in the summer. You can never go wrong with going to Barcis for a respite from life.

Nice area, great mountain scenery, good for short hikes, but also for longer ones. The lake is not natural but the result of a dam (just in case you expect a "real" lake).

(Translated by Google) Stunning place, because it's natural, we stopped to eat at 2.20pm at barcis_tur snc, a place with a typical mountain look and yet crowded, so we asked ourselves, yes, well, let's stop, we sat down, we waited 20 minutes, it arrives the waiter, I ask him to bring me typical food from the area, he replies that the kitchen is closed and if we want to eat we have sandwiches and toast available, ok I was hungry there I order a raw ham sandwich and a toast, waiting for food arrives they bring us two beers on tap after 20 minutes the sandwich and sandwich arrive I expect a stuffed sandwich, guys inside there were 2 slices of raw sandwich dry and inedible the sandwich a little wetter but not with typical cheeses like they do described. I wonder if I have to hold an activity and not feed something typical that makes me remember the place before recommending someone I would think twice.

We would have liked to see more surveillance along the route as there was work involving dangerous machinery and people who, regardless of the prohibitions, passed over the barriers just to take a selfie. The route is entirely flat and feasible even for small children and strollers.

Walk on foot or by train or crossing the river that passes through the valley thanks to a Tibetan bridge. (Translated by Google) One star and I'll explain why. The gorge itself is worth a visit. But BEWARE: the best option is to visit on foot. It's an easy two kilometers there and another two on the way back. Very doable even with small children. We instead took the little train that in an hour took us to pick up other people in the nearby town of Barcis along the state road, so a useless tour, then took us around a wood, equally useless, and finally we reached the gorge, the last fifteen minutes of a mostly boring and off-topic tour. I repeat, the gorge itself is worth it, but the little train allows a limited and hasty view. Even the scant recorded commentary was barely audible. Having spent 28 euros because there are no discounts even for small children (unless they are under a year old!), we asked at least to be able to walk back to be able to enjoy part of the gorge up close. We were told that we had to pay an additional ticket. So I repeat, avoid giving money to the company that runs the train and enjoy the horror on foot.

Nestled in the heart of its municipality, the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is a stunning example of religious architecture that dates back to the sixteenth century, with significant renovations occurring in the nineteenth century. (Translated by Google) This church ⛪ represents the main religious site 🙏🏻 of the small Pordenone municipality of Barcis. The elegant structure, perfectly integrated into the surrounding urban context, is located right in the center, overlooking the main road that runs through the town. We visited it some time ago since we were in town for a walk 🚶🏻‍♂️ in the mid-afternoon. Arriving there around 4:30 pm 🕟, we first toured the outside and then moved inside the building. The façade is pleasant, simple and sober in its essential lines. The bell tower is distinctive, made of dark gray bricks 🧱 that visibly contrast with the white plaster ⚪ of the church ⛪; a couple of benches have been placed at the base of the bell tower. Regarding the interior spaces, note the remains of what appears to be an ancient spiral staircase, now no longer accessible (truly peculiar). Aside from an exposed and dangling electrical wire (as shown in the attached photo 📸 📎), I also noticed a pair of flags (Italian 🇮🇹 and Vatican 🇻🇦) on either side of the altar (an unusual detail). I would suggest supplementing the explanatory panel 🪧 already present at the entrance 🚪 with an additional support, perhaps detailing the history 📜 and architectural features 📏 📐 of the complex. (Translated by Google) A very welcoming 18th-century church, beautiful both architecturally and internally. Inside, there are several very detailed frescoes and a statue of Saint Dominic. The only downside is the bells, which create excessive noise pollution at all hours of the day. They ring twice, all day and night, and even on the half-hour. This may be a historical tradition, but nowadays it's out of context and hard to understand. In addition, at 6 a.m., three bells ring to signal morning prayer. And no, you never get used to that. Amen. If you're looking for a delightful outdoor adventure, the Inizio Sentiero del Dint (CAI 997) is an excellent choice! This well-marked trail makes navigation a breeze, allowing you to soak in breathtaking viewpoints along the way. I loved this mountain walk. It is quite well signed so the route is easy to follow and there are few viewpoints with spectacular views. At the end of the route, it is possible to return to the departure point by entering the old road & Tibetan bridge route (for which you need to pay a ticket of 3€ + 3€ if you want to do the bridge) or to go back through the current road. Would recommend it to everyone in the area! IG @being.nuria

Great walk for the family! We went with a 5 year old, who walked the whole way happily and a 2 year old in a back carrier. I thought it was well signposted, there are a couple of times when you may think you are not sure which way to go, but it is pretty obvious, just keep to the wider paths (sometimes there are little trails veering off, but you can see they are not the right ones to follow) It took us an hour and a half to complete the entire walk, it is definitely worth walking to the 3rd viewpoint, it is the best one. To start the walk, you park near the restaurant by Ponte Antoi, we asked permission to park at the actual restaurant and then had coffees after. The walk starts about 1 minute walk, when you pass the restaurant on your left.

Diga Ponte Antoi

Dam
Nestled along the picturesque Cellina stream, the Ponte Antoi dam is a remarkable creation by engineer Carlo Semenza, who also designed the famous Vajont dam. This stunning structure invites visitors year-round, but for those seeking to truly appreciate its grandeur, winter is an ideal time to visit. During this season, the Barcis reservoir is drained, revealing the dam's impressive architecture and surrounding landscape in all its glory.

Osteria Ponte Antoi is a bustling hotspot for locals and tourists alike, particularly bikers who appreciate both motorbikes and bicycles. It is evident why this place attracts such enthusiasm, as the venue exudes charm and the food is outstanding. The service staff are friendly and efficient, working tirelessly to accommodate the constant influx of hungry diners. Even dining alone guarantees a prompt seating arrangement by a window in the rear section of the main room.
First, the food is excellent and there is no doubt about that. Whatever you order, you can't go wrong. The prices are just fine, not too high. Gnocchi, goulash, traditional dishes, lasagna, everything is great. The problem is if you are a tourist and you don't know Italian, so prepare a google translator. It is unbelievable to me that such a large restaurant has people who do not know at least English or German.

Busy weekend spot for all the local visitors and tourists. Bikers seems to love this place both motor bike and cyclists alike. I can see why. The venue is very nice and the food is great. The service is kind and on task. They keep a fast pace to keep up with the many hungry people coming in from what I saw. Dining alone I got a window seat in the back side of main room right away. I got my food ordered and had it out in 15 minutes pronto. The dishes fly out of the kitchen non stop and wow they look good! Portions good, food great, prices fair, fast service. A must stop spot for lake view dining and good drinks after taking in the sites or hitting a long ride.

The place is beautiful and strategic. But the service is terrible. They need to improve the training of waitress. We, and other tables, waited very long to get attention, and the restaurant was not even full. Also, the kitchen closes quite soon for a weekend place. I would reccomend other places to have lunch in Barcis instead of this place.

Without a doubt, the best restaurant I had the pleasure of visiting during my trip to Italy (Venezia, Dolomites, Barcis). The chef truly honors the local ingredients, treating them with the utmost care and passion, all while embracing the slow food philosophy. The result? Absolutely exceptional dishes! We indulged in some incredible local cheeses, savored ribs that were absolutely divine, and enjoyed the best pasta of our entire trip. One of the most unexpected delights was a dish featuring fried tripe (which sounded unusual at first), but it was absolutely delicious, and I highly recommend giving it a try! I can't wait to return the next time I'm in the area. Keep up the amazing work!

Came here when visiting the Fruili Dolomites. The restaurant was cozy, the staff was amazing and the language barrier strangely made the experience even better and more fun. We had the papardelle with wild boar, and the ribs as a main dish. Both were very good, and the dessert we had, chocolate cake with a (I think) raspberry sauce and whipped cream was even better. Definitely recommend.

Amazing place to eat some local deliciousness! Right in the middle of the wood with a breathtaking view! The food was of really high quality and everything was outstanding, we tried many different dishes and couldn't find any that wasn't good. If you visit Lake Barcis you can't miss out this incredible gem!!

Great food inside a great environment. Very typical food "Made in Friuli", every dish tasty and a very good service. Complete wine selection.
