Independence in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Independence, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Independence, Missouri offers a deep dive into American history, especially as the hometown of President Harry S. Truman, whose presidential library, museum, and family home are major draws. The city was a key jumping-off point for the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails, and you can explore that pioneer legacy at local museums and historic sites. Around the historic square, you’ll find landmarks like the 1859 Jail and Marshal’s Home and the ornate Vaile Mansion. Independence is also significant in Latter Day Saint history, with several church sites and visitor centers located in town.
With favorites like Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews, Independence Visitors' Center, and Target, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Noodles and Company and Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews so you can get the best taste of Independence while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Shopping mall
Shopping
The massive shopping mall Independence Center is located just outside of Kansas City, MO. It has a wide range of stores and services including clothing boutiques, electronics, food court and more. It's often considered one of the best malls in the metro area and remains open even during tough economic times.
I would like to highlight the high level of service. The store staff are always polite and ready to help with product selection, and the information desk employees are happy to answer any questions. But what I liked most was that the shopping center constantly hosts various events: concerts, exhibitions, and master classes. This makes shopping not just about buying goods, but a real entertainment experience. Overall, I had a wonderful day here and will definitely be back! I recommend it to anyone looking for a place where you can not only shop, but also have a good time.
Ruby R — Google review
My son and his girlfriend and I went here. I hadn't been in years. It was a weeknight and after 6 but there didn't seem to be very many people shopping. The parking lot was mostly empty. There are many empty stores. There are still some interesting stores.
Ramona D — Google review
Was there to support independence night out at my son's booth. Key City Locksmith and Security. Had a great time at the entire event. Only negative I could say would be more food truck choices would have been great. Better overall, a great event. And a huge turnout from the public.
Joe S — Google review
Really cool mall. It was pretty dead when I was there. A great selection of stores. Plenty of places to eat including some great treats. The center of the mall has the COOLEST area for kids. Looked like something out of a story book. Had some arcade games in it and a really cool "mossy" looking bridge. I can see why people would be here for hours between the stores and food and big play area for the kiddos.
Shakaira A — Google review
I’ve never had any bad experiences at this store. Everyone is always friendly. But today the young lady that worked there was extremely helpful. This is one of the moments when I say she went above and beyond. Even down to offering to ordering online for us on the things they didn’t have in stock, down to bringing my daughter different things to try on that matched the things she liked. I really appreciate that type of help. Thank you!
Lawanda R — Google review
This mall is on the decline, during my visit Forever 21 is closing and everything was 90% off. The food court looks like a ghost with only 3 food options left.Dillards is the only anchor left. However it’s not a bad mall. I like how there’s an awesome arcade in the middle section.
Slacking P — Google review
We highly recommend the DMV at this plaza. The staff is professional, approachable, and always willing to assist, making each visit smooth and efficient. Their friendly and helpful attitude makes any usually stressful experience much more pleasant.
EagleCore M — Google review
Mall has gone extremely down hill in the last 5 years. It's still clean and well kept but most of the name brand stores have left and many remain abandoned. Still enjoy walking around once in a while but not really a purpose to visit

Wow was I surprised! This is not one of my favorite stores. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the changes in the store from what I have seen in years past, as well as the selection. The store was very organized, had lots of items to choose from of products that I like and look for, plenty of name brand items, and overall their household goodies were by far the best I’ve seen at a Ross store. Again I do not normally shop here but I was happy that a friend made me go in! Hopefully you like some of the items that I found. I could not take enough pictures of everything because there was so much! So if you’re looking for a great place with low pricing for gifts, household Decor, winter wear accessories, and more, this particular store would definitely be one of the spots to check out. Thanks Ross for stepping up your game!
Miss M — Google review
There’s only one cashier and 30 people in line do better and hire more cashier the wait is bad and unprofessional.
Lee A — Google review
Apparently they think everyone there is stealing. They have an officer check everyones bag and receipt before you leave the store. When you don't steal and ur on a time crunch this is very upsetting and kind of violating. Waste of my time and for a bargain store the bargains aren't really bargains.
Crystal S — Google review
Every time I come here, it's always extremely messy. These photos are just from the main aisle. Doesn't show the truth on how bad it really was yesterday. The manager is not doing their job. I only know this because this store is the worst Ross I have been to in Missouri. If I could give zero stars I would!
Omega E — Google review
Love their prices on new clothes but selection is on and off.
Sara W — Google review
Sad to say everytime I come into town and visit this store in Independence, Mo. it gets worse and worse. I dont think the blame can totally be on the store either. The customers are the cause of the way it looks. I feel like I am walking into a Goodwill Store when shopping there. But I will say they have some good deals on clothes iF you can ever sort through the mess.
J. C — Google review
Slow as hell to check out, all while rent a cop is greeting everyone that enters the store. I get checking receipts, but he watched me check out my 3 little items. I showed him the receipt, and he said I needed to look in your bag, He literally watched the cashier ring me up.
Sharon C — Google review
Ok enough prices on run of the mill name brand clothing and shoes. Nice variety of things. What I don’t understand is the complete lack of care or concern about making aisles or racks organized or tidy. None whatsoever. I’m not sure what that says. Even Marshall’s two doors down seems upscale comparatively. Maybe people that shop here don’t care, but honestly... a line with 20 people in in on the weekend before Christmas has TWO cashiers. People were setting items down and walking out. Anyway, I’d like to say that this is just the way it is at holidays, but it’s not. Seems fairly routine. Management just doesn’t give a rip about cleanliness or organization, but again that’s their prioritization. Case in point: with line of 20 people, two cashier and and a trashed store, an employee was behind the counter sorting hangers. I could have thought of 400 higher priority things, personally. It’s as if after closing or before opening they don’t even bother to clean, sweep, organize, etc. If customers don’t care, I’m totally fine. The value for the money is fine. I just want to give people a heads up if they expect some basic level of organization or cleanliness, especially around the holidays.

When it comes to shopping for a variety of items, Target stands out as a go-to retail chain. Offering everything from home goods and clothing to electronics, this store also features exclusive designer collections that add a unique flair to your shopping experience. The atmosphere is welcoming, thanks in part to the friendly staff who are always ready to assist you. One shopper shared their delightful encounter with an especially kind employee in the entertainment department while searching for a specific K-pop album.
Found everything I was looking for. The storw was very clean, stocked, well lit, and easy to shop.
Alissa M — Google review
This Target is a solid choice for everyday shopping. This Target usually has what I need and is decently clean and safe. That said, I generally prefer Blue Springs, Liberty, or Lees Summit for their size, selection, cleanliness, and safety as well. Still, it’s convenient for browsing, purchasing home essentials, and completing a pickup order.
Hannah E — Google review
We're in Target all the time but unfortunately you have to completely avoid the electronics or toy sections due to the roaming ATT salesman. That is super annoying and I would think Target would not want to keep people shopping in those areas. If you walk by and get harassed by one, you might walk back by a few minutes later and a different one will approach.
Matthew M — Google review
Two issues. In store pickup CSR prioritized loading a cart with several cases of water rather than securing order for the only person waiting. The item was bagged and determined to have several dents upon unpackaging at home! The dents were readily visible and the product should not have been selected for pickup, I recommend avoiding this store if ordering on line! The online replacement experience however was perfect.
Eldon A — Google review
I'm supporting companies that stood proud and kept their DEI program. Costco is my place now and I'm grateful I can support them with my former Target money. Costco kept DEI.
1vitruvianman — Google review
The associates have horrible customer service skills. Each time you ask a worker a question, they act as if you are bothering them and never give a clear answer.
Laurena C — Google review
EDIT: DEI rollback means you’ve lost my household’s money. Spineless. Self checkout is tiny and not enough registers, store has necessities locked up, not stocked, bad lighting. I can’t believe I’m choosing Walmart, where I haven’t shopped in years, over target. Hire security. Do something better. Locking products up and having to wait to have someone unlock them…there goes my “browsing” or fun target time. No point in shopping around and reading labels. Not worth it.
E D — Google review
The staff is very friendly especially the old guy that help me at entertainment department. I can't remember his name but he is very sweet and kind. I went there to look for k-pop album and I see them on the shelf but it's not the version that I want. However, I decide to ask him if they have another version at the back. He told me yes and asked me which version that I'm looking for, I told him the description and he came back with it in his hand. Thank you so much for helping me today!

Been here multiple times to watch the Mavericks play, and it is a great venue! I know there are bigger arenas out there, but this is a great, comfortable setting for hockey and other events in the KC area. There is always plenty of parking. The concession stands are reasonably priced and offer a variety of options. The venue has decent bathrooms and is relatively easy to navigate. I'm excited to go back for more events!
Jordan H — Google review
Though it's a smaller venue, it was much closer to home. The concert we saw was very good. Sound quality may not be the best, but still very good. They have concessions available, food and drinks. It's easy to find the gates, however gets crowded near entrance when people coming in linger as soon as they get through security checkpoints. Nice location for local events!

Went to see Mercy Me, which was sold out, and had a fantastic time. Great staff during the whole process of entering the facility and even exiting to smoke prior to the show. Staff as well as Independence Police was very knowledgeable about Insulin pumps, which I wear. Allowed me to be wanded vs. going thru the scanners. Thank you! The only negative thing about the venue was that we were charged $52 for parking by Ticket Master and said on the website it's supposed to be $15.
Ron B — Google review
Nice venue. Parking is a bit of a mess. They need more folks directing traffic. The line to get in was very long and not well managed. Some lines moved quickly and others slowly. Inside was the same for drink lines. Staff is nice, but painfully slow. The seats are comfy and the sound system is good. We could hear well.

The hockey 🏒 game was so fun with all the kids ringing their bells! And I personally like the fights with the players lol ssshhhh. Was a great night. Thought it was kool they let people skate after the game for free for a while. Everyone that went had a great time. I’ll go again!

Get Air Trampoline Park offers a fun-filled experience for kids and adults alike. The indoor arena features inflatable exhibits such as giant slides, jousting coliseums, and obstacle courses. There's a designated soft-play area for children under 2, while older kids can bounce, climb, and slide to their heart's content. The venue hosts various events throughout the year including family fun nights and parents' night out.
Sunday's they have toddler time from 8 am- 8 am. Great way to get the energy out of the littles for a hard nap after! They usually give snacks part way through and the toddlers have the place to themselves without bigger kids knocking them down. Fun experience for the kiddos.

2 times in a row with something at this place being an issue. I said I wouldn’t come back after they took $150 from us on tickets they told us couldn’t be used & I have still yet to get a refund 3 weeks later. Came for my 5 yr olds birthday today & she is 42 inches tall. The lady told my daughter she couldn’t play in a certain area because she wasn’t tall enough. I see no signs anywhere that state a height requirement on this particular area. Soooooo we pay more money for my daughter to play on selective equipment/spaces now? Like come on. This place I use to think was awesome but I’ll just continue going to sky zone at this point cuz the employees here are rude as hell. Photo of area & sign near area included

This place being doing the absolute most! Had a party here and they were making everyone fill out a wavier regardless if you were jumping or not. Half of the people in my party were older people who couldn’t see well and didn’t even know how to fill out the wavier. It was just a headache for no reason when all they were doing was sitting in the party area. Then I was told the party room would hold 40 people. We got a couple of tables to use and that was it. Then someone in my party was bleeding and asked for a band-Aid and the worker said they had to do an incident report for what a scrap like come on now. Rather than that the host helping with the party was great and the pizza was good as well.
Tierney W — Google review
Was about a birthday party and lost my phone in a crack between parks. I am a type 1 diabetic and t only way to enter insulin as with phone. I have a tandem mobi pump and with my blood sugar being 300 i am screwed on insulin until 8pm when they close. I explained this to manager and said this was emergency and they said it’s posted everywhere no phones! I LOOKED and Itis only f jumpers to not have phones. We adults weren’t jumping. So there was no signs!!! I hate this place with customer service.
Jennifer H — Google review
Extremely disappointed with our experience at Get Air. One of the kids in our group got severely hurt (like went to hospital), and not a single staff member showed any concern for his well-being. No one asked if he was okay or offered help — they were only focused on documenting the incident, not on actually helping. Then when it came time to pay, I was pressured into tipping as she was standing right over me and already selected the tip she wanted. Absolutely unacceptable. We won’t be coming back, and I’d strongly recommend others think twice before going. This place is all about covering themselves, not caring for customers.
Shelaine A — Google review
Reasonably clean and easy to keep track of kiddos. I docked 2 stars in my rating because this is a largely unsupervised trampoline park. When they first opened, employees use to monitor and ensure safety, but not anymore. This can easily add up to safety concerns and bullying. Parents need to keep a close eye on their children.
Chrislyn M — Google review
My 3 kids (ages 7, 10 and 13) LOVE this trampoline park! We just had my 7 year olds birthday party here. The best time to go is during the week. We went Saturday night and there was so many kids there. Regardless, no matter the cost the kids have a blast here! 10/10 would recommend. Follow me to see my reviews of business around the kc area

The most unenjoyable experience imaginable. Ruined my grandsons birthday. They messed up and didn’t pick up all the pizzas we had ordered and refused to accommodate us with additional time so we could go get pizza from elsewhere. The manager Mariah was the worst. Uncaring, zero respect and couldn’t care less about their mistake. We will never come back.

Burlington is a fantastic destination for savvy shoppers looking to snag great deals on stylish finds. During my recent visit, I discovered a charming black dress adorned with a bow that was perfect for an upcoming dinner party—all for under $20! The fit was adorable, and I can't wait to accessorize it to make it pop even more. What impressed me most this time around was the noticeable improvement in store organization; it felt much more inviting compared to my previous visits.
The store is better maintained than previous visits. Employees are doing a better job at keeping the store well put together. Before it was a chaotic mess. More organization now.
Oscar B — Google review
At Burlington you have to look thru everything to find something. The store is so slow at checkout and it's cluttered. I use this as time as steps because you have to look for the unique items which I found. See the pictures.
Smith C — Google review
While I ended up with a couple of good pieces, the shelves/racks were pretty bare. The shoe section was very sparse. The line was long and only 2 cash registers were open, on a Saturday afternoon. The prices were still a good value for the few clothing items I found and the service still came with a smile, regardless of the stress they were under.
Stephanie M — Google review
The assistant manager Terra is the absolute worst thing to ever happen to Burlington. Her can't do attitude is sickening. When I was there today she was standing around in a puffy trench coat telling people that if they didn't like the 45 minute wait in line that they where free to leave. Several people asked her to open a second register and she flat out told them no that she had stuff to do. And then continued to just stand around which then made the people in line furious. She literally has no business in a management position. Her attitude alone is costing this store money. And several of the regular customers in line stated that they hate dealing with her and that she is always like this. This store can get better but not until they fire this women!
Skylar M — Google review
I haven’t been to a Burlington in several years, but I remember them being a little cleaner and more “put together” looking. The store looked a little run-down (almost like a thrift store) and smelled a little musty. That said, the clothes were well organized by style and size, so they were easy to find and the prices can’t be beat! But you do have to look over each piece thoroughly for stains, tears, imperfections, etc. If someone else tried it on and left it in the dressing room floor, there’s probably a dirty foot print on the back of that shirt you love- and it may not come out in the wash. But thats the chance you take for such great prices, I guess. You just have to be careful.
Katerina P — Google review

It's been awhile since I've been there. Found what I needed for an affordable price! You can't tell because it's black.bBut it has a bow and laps over and rousing. It fits really cute. It was under 20.00. It's for a dinner party. My accessories will make it stand out even more! You can find great deals here!! Check it out! I highly recommend this store! I will be returning!

Noodles and Company is a delightful counter-serve chain that brings together an array of international noodle and pasta dishes, ranging from classic mac 'n' cheese to flavorful Pad Thai. Diners rave about the diverse menu, which includes options like Korean BBQ meatballs and refreshing Med Salad with Chicken. Many guests appreciate the ability to customize their meals with spices for an extra kick, while gluten-free patrons can enjoy rice pasta that pairs beautifully with various toppings.
Very good food. My favorite bowl is the Korean Noodles with steak.

I got the Med Salad with Chicken, the Korean BBQ meatballs, and a Tice Crispy for dessert. All was very tasty. These menu items are a little spicy (which I like) and it can be made more spicy with pepper flakes (think pizza red pepper flakes) as well as other spices. The rice crispy treat was very large and fresh. Great stuff! Staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful since this was my first ever visit. The shop is part of Independence Plaza but has an outside entrance so they can be open when the shopping center is closed. This was a Sunday visit and the shopping center closed at 6PM but this shop is open until 8PM. Overall quite impressed.

Great gluten free options, including rice pasta. I, personally, like the rice pasta best. Has a great flavor and goes well with many of the toppings. They have a corn pasta that isn't so good, IMO. Staff is very knowledgeable about what people with gluten allergies can, and can't, eat.

Had lunch at Red Robin in Independence. We were seated immediately and served drinks promptly. Server was very attentive. Order fried fish and chips, and an order of fried pickles. Fish was far better than I expected. Served hot, crispy and did not have a heavy thick crust. Fried pickles were also crispy and very good. Of course you can’t forget the unlimited fires😀. My wife had a classic cheese burger and was very happy with it. Grand daughter had the kids meal cheese burger, fries and Sunday and finished it all with a smile. Happy with our meal but it did come with a hearty price tag. $62, with tip😫

First time there and i was blown away from the quality of food, service, and everything. Katrina was the sweetest and incredibly thoughtful. She was delightful and kind and really provided us with a great experience over all. The food was delicious. The cheese twist appetizer was so good. they’re somehow different than regular mozzarella sticks and softer almost? Don’t know but I’m taking all my friends and family here. Burgers were of course delicious.
Briget V — Google review
Overall average food experience. Fries were not offered when we sat down. When we asked for them maybe 10 in the basket and they were undercooked. We ordered appetizers. The brussel sprouts and fried pickles were good. I ordered the veggie burger with extra pickles. Same thing with my chips - maybe 8 on the plate. The pickles didn’t come out with the food. When I asked again for the pickles our server said she “spaced”. When I was 3/4 of the way finished, she came back and said they were out of pickles. Really - I should have been told that up front. Drink refills were slow. The final straw we were told someone messed with the point if sales on the table and we paid for the table next to us and vice versa. They said don’t worry they were the same price. I have a hard time believing this. No manager came over, nothing. We weren’t able to see our bill just had to take the servers word it was the same price. Totally unacceptable. Won’t be back.

We love going to Red Robin, but this one near KC is extra special. They mix up a house sauce that isn't found at other red Robins we have been to in St Louis and Illinois. This sauce is just an amazing mix with BBQ sauce in it and their own house sauce. Fries and burgers are not the same for my family now, I wish they sold this stuff by the bottle! The server was amazing, music and atmosphere good, place was clean. I can't recommend any higher.

We went and our server took our plates thinking we were done I also ordered margarita and a coke and I got a margarita and a water....so we got the hint to leave with the plates being removed . no asking at all....also the past couple times we went they never refill our fries unless we find them and ask them .. and we pay the upcharge sadly.. I think we are done for a while so 100's of dollars will be put some other restaurants .sadly the burgers are Devine .but the service well...sad is all I can say Upcharge. No attentive server...and food taken away...🥺

Manager Heather and server Angie were wonderful. There was a potential allergy exposure to a meal I ordered and they replaced the dish and then didn't charge us due to how long it took. They were very busy and these things happen. Their thoughtfulness was impressive. We will return -thanks!

So we went to Red Robin’s today for an early lunch ( for the first time ) and wasn’t sure what to expect…but then we got Tony….And i will just say because of him and how he treated us, Red Robin’s may be on our return list. He gave great service! He was very attentive and thoughtful. His knowledge and opinion of the menu was very helpful when helping my spouse decide on burgers to eat for lunch. He even went out of his was to make sure my nieces and nephew felt included in the experience, he made us all laugh and made sure they got ballon’s. We were very happy the service and the food came out fresh, fast, and delicious!!! Very good job Red Robin’s. We hope next time we come back we can have that very same experience.

Restaurant
Chili's Grill & Bar is a vibrant family-friendly restaurant that serves up a delightful mix of classic Tex-Mex and American dishes, all within a charming Southwestern-style ambiance. Diners rave about the mouthwatering fajitas and the smokehouse combo, which have been described as some of the best in recent memory. The Triple Dipper appetizer is another highlight, arriving fresh and warm with an array of delicious dipping sauces.
This Chili’s truly stood out from every other location we’ve ever been to. From the moment we walked in, every single staff member went above and beyond to make sure guests felt welcome. It wasn’t just us—every table around us received the same warm, attentive service. Each employee greeted people with a genuine smile and carried such a positive attitude, which created an atmosphere that felt inviting and enjoyable. On top of the exceptional service, the food came out hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious—exactly what you hope for when dining out. It’s rare to see a restaurant where the entire team works together so seamlessly to make the experience memorable, and this location nailed it. By far, this has been the best Chili’s we’ve had the pleasure of dining at. A huge thank-you and much respect to the managers for setting such a high standard and leading by example.

We ordered on Door dash since me and my husband feel sick right now and it was just bad, really bad. Food wasn't prepared properly,I understand that food might taste different since it's not hot fresh out of the kitchen when you order delivery but this was just not it It was so oily and greasy, that's how the Southwest roll looked when I opened the box they forgot the salad dressing and the dips for the triple dippers 0/10 I feel really disappointed, it was not worth it, I regret spending those $70 bucks here

Update: we stopped in again. Chips and salsa were good. Other than that another miss. Incorrect items brought out. Cold food. Basically horrible experience. Last chance, won’t be back. The place was empty and we wondered if anyone was ever coming over. After about 15 minutes Ashley came over and asked for our drink order. When I asked for club soda she said they didn’t have that and had no idea what it was. She took our food order at the same time. I asked for veggie fajitas again I was told they didn’t have that. She said they could use black bean patty, again not what I wanted-strike 2. Lili took over as our server. She was 100% better. The food came out right behind the chips and salsa because of our initial server. The food was so so at best and very pricey. Especially for the quality. I hadn’t been to Chili’s in quite a while. Definitely not coming back. Poor initial server with no idea how to work with the public the pricing and the food quality made this a less than pleasant experience.

We’ve come to this location often over the past couple years and it just gets better and better each time! The servers are always top tier. I wish I could remember all of their names but our most recent was Sarah (or Sara) and she prompted me to make this review because she’s the best waitress I’ve ever had, hands down. And we’ve been to a lot of places! We came at dinner time on a Saturday night and the joint was jumping for sure!! Even so, the food came out hot and accurate, and most of all tasted great! She came to check on us multiple times and was so kind to everyone she interacted with. Went above and beyond for us and all of her tables! Highly highly recommend this location and Sarah(or Sara)!!

The menu features huge and juicy steaks, classic appetizers, and sides like chilled shrimp cocktail, loaded baked potatoes, and sautéed portobello mushrooms. Guests rave about the creamy cheddar salad dressing. The restaurant offers unique appetizers and drinks during happy hour in a classy and lively atmosphere.

Ok, I try to be reserve on 5 stars but why not, the food was fantastic, service was great, and beautiful place inside. Our waitress Jennifer was very friendly and attentive, the atmosphere was relatively quite with classic rock playing. Somewhat unemployed at the time so didn't go all our on steaks but my wife's whiskey medallion was tender and delicious. My county fried chicken had good breading and thicker meat (not smashed flat like some places) the not country gravy was good. We mixed up the sides and had whipped potatoes, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and gouda corn; also all very good. Of course finished it off with gooey butter cake with bourbon peaches. SWEET and tasty. I would certainly recommend for a date night.

This used to be one of my favorite places. My greeting set the tone for the night. " what can I do you for?" i almost asked where I could find women's boots. Not : welcome, how many tonight, have you been here before ? After we answered her with (2) She then asked do you have a reservation?. Why would we say 2. Vs we have a reservation for 2 and name. The fish was not good. Cold fries. And prices are too high. Quality is terrible. Old croutons from a bag.. you can make your own. Salad dressing was paste. Salad looks like from a bag. Nothing is fresh. The dinner rolls and honey butter is very good. Steak was ok nothing great. And seated at the very back passing a half empty dinning room. Seated surrounded by nosing groups and screaming children. We couldn't hold a conversation. Your front hostess needs some help. First : invite people not basically asking what I wanted. [We'll I was thinking dinner] what can I do for you? Is close to ; what do you want?Someone needs some training. And also send them home if they cant clean up a bit to come to work and look presentable. I am not at McDonald's. The first person I see needs to represent.

The center is known for its friendly and knowledgeable staff, who offer an exceptional experience for visitors of all ages. The facility itself is clean and peaceful, offering a sense of calm upon entry. Additionally, there are numerous educational exhibits aimed at children that incorporate multimedia elements to teach about Missouri's history during the 1800s.
I really enjoy this place. It's always nice and cool inside and once you come in the people there are so nice and kind and really help to show you a tour of the place. It's a fun place to learn about the pioneer heritage of the LDS people and the struggles that they faced. It also has some really nice replicas of what things were like back then, such as a cabin and furnishings inside the cabin. They have a lot of knowledgeable staff that can help you and answer any questions you may have. Great place to visit for any kind of vacation

The Harry S Truman National Historic Site, located in Grandview and Independence, Missouri, is the former home of the 33rd president of the United States. Visitors can explore the intimate glimpse of Truman's life and career through personal artifacts, furniture, photographs, and period antiques. The white Victorian-style structure remains much as it did in the early 20th century. The site also includes neighboring homes such as those belonging to Bess Truman's brothers and the president's aunt.
Beautiful home and very interesting, knowledgeable park guide. I didn’t know much about Truman but really enjoyed the history lesson. The National Park Service has done a great job with the videos and the house across the street that belonged to Truman’s cousins. Wish we had more time to go through the Truman Library.

“The Buck stops here.” So much information! I have been to several president museums and this is definitely a better one. I especially liked going to the Truman house just one mile from the museum and touring it. Truman was there only president to not go to college, yet he was incredible in his leadership abilities. So much memorabilia and history here. A must see for those who love history!

The Harry S. Truman National Historic Site offers a unique opportunity to step into the personal world of President Truman. The home is beautifully preserved, and the 30-minute guided tour of the first floor is both informative and engaging. The park ranger shared great stories that made the experience even more memorable. Across the street, another house displays more about Truman and his family. It’s a wonderful historic site for anyone interested in learning more about this pivotal figure in American history.

This Presidential Library with spectacular. It followed the progression that developed his leadership. He was a humble servant, give me the White House more secure in the Oval Office a modest place of Presidential representation. I highly recommend, learning what real leadership is like. Interesting fact while we were there during the week leading to 4th of July 2025, that is the building where Johnson signed the bill that put Medicare in place for the American public, while the current Administration wants to dismantle Medicare and Medicaid.

Clinton's Soda Fountain is a long-standing ice cream and milkshake parlor located in a historic building with a marble bar. Situated about 20 minutes outside of Kansas City, this old-fashioned soda and malt shop has been serving customers since 1988. It holds historical significance as it was once frequented by Harry Truman before he became president. The establishment offers a nostalgic experience, with its picturesque Independence Square location and decor that harks back to the small-town America of yesteryears.

Clinton’s Soda Fountain is a great spot for classic ice cream and phosphates. The staff is friendly, and the old-fashioned atmosphere makes it a nice place to stop with family or friends.
Ben B — Google review
This vintage-style soda bar accomplishes its goal of bringing you back to the old days with its decor, sundaes, and phosphates. It doesn't go over the top trying to bring that feeling, either - it seems like it's just survived all this time and is still around. We tried the jalapeno grilled cheese, and it was about what I expected: American cheese and canned jalapenos on white bread, grilled on a panini maker or something similar. Not bad, but certainly not fancy by any means (and probably not worth the $8 or $10). I'd like to see them upgrade the ice cream brand, as they currently use Belfonte. The malt was very good, and the ice cream nachos were pretty good and an interesting idea with waffle chips and candy. I would go back and try some of the other items, like the cake shake.

A historical landmark of Independence, MO. The inside reminds me of an old-school diner and has some old-fashioned candy and other merch for sale. The phosphate reminds me of the cream soda when I was younger. However, the banana split tasted like it was store-bought.

We were excited to try this place out, but they were out of all the staples. No soda water, no whipped cream, no lids for cups for the floats, and I heard them say they were nearly out of milk. The Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence, Missouri, is a living museum that preserves the courthouse where Harry S. Truman worked before becoming President. Renovated in 1933 by architect George Frederick Waller, it features stunning Colonial Revival-style architecture. The building also houses the assessment department for personal property taxes in Jackson County. Visitors should expect waits and security measures when visiting, but the staff are professional and helpful.
Very efficient process to deal with insane bureaucracy. I used the QLess app to get a place in line. Was in and out in under 15 minutes to register a car and pay taxes. Big props to the folks there who created this system - it’s efficient. Was also nice to have very friendly folks working there.
Mark C — Google review
I needed to get a property tax waiver and this was by far the easiest experience I’ve ever had with this kind of thing. I scheduled an appointment for 9am the day before by getting onto their website and using QLess. Because I’m an anxious person I got to the courthouse and checked in at about 8:00am. I was fully ready to sit and wait for at least an hour until my appointment time, but barely 10 minutes later I was called up. The man who got my account set up and gave me my waiver explained calmly and clearly everything I’d need to know about how property taxes work in Jackson County and how it’d work for me as a new resident. That’s a first for me, and as a new adult fumbling through life, I appreciated it a ton. Only small issue I had was the receptionist was a bit blunt, grumpy, and acted like it was an inconvenience people were checking in. Like, ma’am. The day just started. It can’t be that bad already. All in all, the entire process was fast, efficient, and super simple. Schedule ahead, show up early, and you should be in and out in no time.
Beppalief — Google review
Employees are crazy rude. Called to ask why my appointment won't let me reschedule for a later time. Told me I had to wait until my original time I booked had passed. Then asked about walk ins when he interrupted me saying we don't take walk-ins. Sir, it says you do on your website and that it's simply recommended to make an appointment. Then he rudely goes, "well then they just haven't updates the website". I think if you offer a service and advertise it as such, you need to honor it.
Emmy S — Google review
Very long wait! If you are coming to handle property taxes, they open at 8am but you should arrive by 7:15/7:30am to get in line. You have to wait in the line and get out in queue. I arrived at 8:25am and was in line outside for just over an hour and a half. I ended up being #39 once I made it inside. I then waited for 3 hours for it to be my turn. You can set up to have text notifications when your number is coming up so you can at least sit in your car and wait. Once it was my turn, it took about 20-25 minutes to do what I needed and get done. The bathrooms were also out of order and they had porta potties outside instead.
Ericka P — Google review
I just want to give a huge shoutout to Sasha M. She was absolutely great, kind, & super helpful through my property tax process! I was thankful to have somebody like that to help me.
Morgan M — Google review
In Jackson County Missouri one has to pay personal property taxes. Some tasks have to be done in person. Tax waivers. Taking off or adding vehicles. Here is what I found out. Expect at least an hour to two hour wait to be seen. You have to go through a metal detector to enter. You must wear a mask. You give your name and phone number in order to receive text updates. They are very good at updating. The staff are overworked but they are proffesional. The building is small. Hallways are narrow. The building was recently restored to its original condition. A museum and library is on site but can only be seen by appointment. Parking is challenging. One way streets surround the building. At the time of this post the timed parking spots are not being enforced. Only one entrance in. Its on the South side of the building. It is wheel chair accessible. A lot of new business popping up around the courthouse. And last the Jackson County Sheriff working at this location is a proffesional and went above and beyond to help everyone that walked in from what I observed.
SamsGarageSale — Google review
I just watched what you people did to a young man on my strangest arrest. He had no reason to be arrested. He didn't do anything. You have no right to ask for somebody's ID. How dare you or they're trying to pay their taxes. Shame on you
Julie C — Google review
It was a very nice courthouse with a great statue of Truman on one side and on the other I think it was Andrew Jackson who Truman liked. It's really the Jackson County Truman Courthouse. Truman was a judge at the courthouse before becoming President. The town square is quite lovely but I was there during covid so not much was open. I spoke to some locals and they remember how President Truman, once out of office, would just stroll about town and talk to anyone. He truly was the "people's President". Everything in Independence, MO seems to be named after Truman. Independence is known as the Queen City of the Trails; the big wagon trains departed from here (California, Oregon, and Santa Fe Trails). You see a monument to the Mormons on the backside of the courthouse next to Jackson. Truman's presidential library is here but I didn't have time to visit it. Truman and his wife Bess are also buried here. Because the Mormons were forced to leave Independence and thus head west, the city is sacred to the Latter Day Saints. It is the home of Joseph Smith's 1831 Temple Lot, and several Mormon factions have their headquarters here.

Nestled in the heart of Independence, the Vaile Mansion is a stunning Victorian estate that dates back to 1881. Originally built for Colonel Harvey Merrick Vaile, this architectural gem exemplifies Second Empire style with its intricate design and opulent details. With 31 beautifully preserved rooms, visitors can immerse themselves in the craftsmanship of a bygone era.
This place is a gem! Built in the 1800s, the Vaile Mansion has a rich history involving all the makings of a good story: love, nefarious business practices, scandals, and breathtaking architecture/decor. The docents (tour guides) are very knowledgeable and exude the love for the space throughout the duration of the visit. I strongly suggest planning around an hour to fully explore. Some highlights: - chandeliers from the White House - Girl Scouts can get a patch for learning about it! - Christmas decor changes annually so keep visiting - fun facts about 1800s/1900s culture - gift shop on the second level - free parking *Note: There is mention of slavery and discussion around someone taking their own life during this tour. Use your discretion*

What a delightful tour! My personal tour guide Sandee was lovely. So much knowledge, great stories and information. I really enjoyed the volunteers. I even made them pose for a picture! Thank you Sandee for your hospitality, you really went above and beyond. I felt so welcomed to Independence.

My husband and I did a tour this morning at the mansion. Our tour guide, unfortunately I can’t remember his name, but he was an older gentlemen dressed in period clothing. I remember him saying he attended UCM college where I also went to school. He was the absolute best! He was so knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. He has his own personal stories that were from his childhood that were interesting as well. I highly recommend going to tour this beautiful mansion. It has rich history and the best tour guide!

This big beautiful victorian Vaile Mansion is a must see! My daughter was visiting from Arizona and we had a wonderful time exploring this historical treasure. Our tour guide was the best. She had story after story about every detail surrounding the mansion and it's owners. What a lovely time we shared. ❤️

It's such a cool tour in downtown Independence. If you have a chance to go tour it you should. 30 rooms and every room has a glamorous fireplace. You will park on the street and then walk up the very pretty walkway full of flowers.

I would LOVE to give a higher review but no one ever stays there to work the open hours. I went there today an hour before close. Open sign was still up but the workers were leaving very early and locked up and left while we were walking up. This is NOT the first time this has happened. If you want to go here, I may suggest calling ahead and making sure they know they are expected to work during open hours.

Fountain
Sights & Landmarks
The Fountain in Mill Creek Park is a popular and picturesque spot in the city center, surrounded by benches for visitors to relax and take photos. The fountain features sculptures that were originally created 50 years before being installed, having been imported from New York over 70 years ago. Cast in France in 1910, the bronze fountain depicts four heroic horsemen representing mighty rivers of the world. While some visitors appreciate its uniqueness and beauty, others have expressed concerns about homeless individuals hanging around the area.
Great place to walk around. I wonderful place enjoy the beautiful fountain and take pictures. It is so relaxing to just sit there in front of the fountain and watch the water as well as the people. Best place to take pictures both in the daytime and at night. I recommend checking out this historic and ironic spot when on the Country Club Plaza!

Circle of Lights Rememberence Ceremony 2025 at the Fountain was very special and a beautiful place to have it to honor my beautiful son, Levi.

Beautiful fountain. Easy to find. Not much parking around this park so we couldn't stay to enjoy.
Samantha Z — Google review
In the "City of Fountains" this is our crown jewel. Elaborate and intricately carved fanciful dolphins, horses, cherubs, and assorted figures spout sprays of water at the entrance to the Country Club Plaza. It is maintained well and has a rich history. It is good to see it used and appreciated for the treasure that it is.
J L — Google review
Peaceful, but they need to clean the debris from the fountain, that junk floating around it is a very off-putting experience, forcing me to usually admire this city treasure from afar. Got some great pictures, though!
Tanya D — Google review
I always enjoy seeing this fountain every time I visit, yes it's not the biggest in the world or whatever others complain about but it's unique to KC. My only issue is the homeless that hang around it, takes away from your comfort zone and enjoyment. Seems like more and more homeless are popping up in the plaza area. At night didn't feel too safe had some homeless lady yelling at me trying to get my attention, some drunken kids were running around acting like fools. They should have some patrols in there.
Mark D — Google review
Nice fountain and park. The city colors the water at times and has different colorful lights at different times of the year. Needs a few more benches to sit on though around the fountain. (my opinion) Nice path for walkers/joggers too.
Mike B — Google review
Great place to relax and view the plaza, walk a dog, or to explore with visitors from out of town. Kansas City is the “city of fountains,” and this one is probably the most recognizable or iconic on the plaza. A nice place for families during the day, but probably not as safe after dark.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Independence, El Pico Mexican Restaurant has been delighting diners for over a decade with its vibrant take on traditional Mexican cuisine. This charming eatery prides itself on using fresh produce and expertly cooked meats, ensuring that every dish is not only flavorful but also crafted with care. The menu features classic favorites infused with modern twists, making it an exciting destination for both locals and visitors alike.
So a couple of weeks ago, I got the chance to eat at this restaurant in the square of Independence, across from the courthouse. El Pico Mexican Restaurant. I was waiting for my appointment and had a serious craving for something REAL. Xavier greeted me, and I sat down. It took some time for me to figure out what I wanted to eat because everything they offered sounded so good!! In the meantime, chips and salsa were served, and BoyOBoy was that salsa delicious!! I decided on a steak Chimichanga, and Xavier had my dish made exactly how I wanted it! It was so delicious and so filling. I didn't even finish the whole thing 🤤❤️ I ordered a churro cake for dessert, took pictures, and boxed it up to go. It was so delicious, soft, and jam-packed full of spice. I left here soooo stuff and so pleasantly surprised that in the heart of Independence, I got a firm taste on culture and it was delicious!! If you're ever in the area, or even if you're not... spend some time and go check them out!! They have amazing specials each day, literally something for everyone! (Check all the photos for more details on that) If you stop by, tell Xavier I sent you!!

Three of us stopped in here for lunch during a weekday. We were underwhelmed with the terrible service, overwhelmed by the menus, and we ended up leaving without ordering anything at all. El Pico is not where I would turn for “Mexican” food. Let me start with the menus. This must be like some kind of joke or nod to the menu at the diner in Schitt’s Creek. Because there are menus and more menus and tabletop menus! The service was awful. I didn’t see anything on the menu that looked like it would make sitting through the service worth it.

What a great experience my friend and I had at this establishment. I wasn't expecting much as we just went in for a quick bite on a taco Tuesday night. We ended up having a delayful conversation with the female manager on site. They also had some of the best salsa that I got for encounter. My friend agreed. The tacos were fresh and delicious and the pricing was just right! And oh! Amazing Margarita!! I will definitely be returning!

This is my favorite locally owned Mexican spot and it’s on the historic Independence square! Service was excellent and the food was fresh and tasty! My chicken fajitas came to the table sizzzzzling! The margaritas were a perfect complement to the meal.

First time in here. Came for a drink and ended up splitting the sample platter. Food was amazing. Had great taste! Not your ordinary Mexican restaurant. Tasted very authentic. They Tequila Bloody Mary was very satisfying. I will be back to enjoy other plates.

The food was good. The salsa was delicious and the spicy cranberry margarita was out of this world!!! But the service…… The service was 10/5. I had to give this place the full 5 stars…wish I could give more. We left our car key behind and the server chased us down (she sprinted) two blocks to return it to us. I am very grateful.

Pub
The Court House Exchange is a popular subterranean pub and restaurant known for its casual, lively atmosphere and focus on burgers and beers. The menu features signature burgers like the black n blue with Cajun flavors and creamy blue cheese, as well as comfort food classics such as deep-fried chicken with mashed potatoes. This cozy spot offers hometown cooking with options like mac n cheese and pork tenderloin.
Courthouse Exchange – Independence, MO My wife and I recently went here for date night with some friends—who, despite their local foodie knowledge, had never heard of this hidden gem. I’m here to spread the word. Stepping down those stairs beneath the Independence Square feels like walking into a time capsule. The Courthouse Exchange has been around since 1899, making it one of the oldest operating restaurants in Missouri. Tucked below street level, the space is filled with carved rock walls, old brick, wood columns and beams, tin ceilings, and vintage photos that truly set the tone. We ordered pulled pork macaroni, onion rings, fried chicken, and a tasty adult drink—and wow. Everything was delicious. The drinks were on point, and the menu lined with old photos of Independence added a great local touch. We especially loved the shirts the staff were wearing with “Judge and Jury” printed on the back—such a fun nod to the courthouse history. This place has roots deep in Independence history. It’s been a local hangout for over a century, located right next to the Jackson County Courthouse, where Harry Truman once served as county judge. Independence itself was the starting point for the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails, so it’s no surprise that a spot like this carries so much charm and significance. Date night verdict: We’ll definitely be back. The food, the history, and the atmosphere made it one of our favorite spots so far. If you haven’t been—go. It’s a piece of Missouri history and a seriously tasty place to grab a meal.

10.5.24 You have to go down a flight of stairs to get to restaurant. The service is really good and the atmosphere is beautiful. I enjoyed the dim lighting and the stained glass everywhere. I ordered a burger and it was made from a frozen patty. The Savior for it was the cheddar cheese and the barbecue sauce. The fries are great and I usually judge a place by their fries. My husband got the fried chicken dinner and the chicken was so dry he couldn't eat it. I tried a few bites and it was very dry but there was a honey glaze on the outside that tasted really good.we probably won't be back because it was pretty expensive and my husband didn't like his food.

910/5/24 Iv been told to come here for the food. So I showed up for lunch . Start off saying, if you hate stairs and have trouble with them like me . Either don't come here because it's in the basement of the building. I got the plaintiff chicken dinner. Mash potatoes and green beans. Chicken has a great honey glaze iv never had anywhere! But... The chicken was dry as a biscuit. Mashed potatoes was chunky and great! Green beans was great! But . All in all was a waste of money and time.. The sweet tea was not ont eh sweet side and that's ok. The soda from the bar was actually ok. Maybe too much ice. The basement you walk into at first is a bar. But on the side and back was tables. Very low light, reminds me of a old speak easy. Bathrooms very clean. Price for two for lunch $42. Not coming back but cool experience.

I have been to this restaurant several times over the years and they were always good. I came last fall and tried their special new chicken dish and was a little disappointed because it wasn't real hot or particularly fresh but figured it just one of those things. This last time, a friend and I came for lunch. I had the pulled pork sandwich and he had a club sandwich. The pork with sauce was barely warm and tasted like it had set under a lamp too long. It wasn't very fresh. The meat on the club was tepid and obviously thrown together quickly and it was sloppy looking. The fries were very hot and tasty though. And the beer was great! All in all, especially for the price, it was very disappointing. This restaurant used to be really good. What has happened? On top of that, our poor waitress seemed to be doing everything in the dining area; taking orders, serving, cleaning tables and sweeping. I'm sure they are short staffed but that was so unfair to her. We left her a very large tip for her hard work. I don't think we'll be going back.

A really cool experience! You enter on the street level and then go down to the basement level. It has a speakeasy kind of vibe with plenty of seating. The food was decent with moderate portions. We were not disappointed.
Patty T — Google review
Splendid. It's just absolutely splendid. The only sinful complaint I've is that you can get lost finding this secret gem of a restaurant and parking space. It has a strong historic vintage prohibition decor and a lovely bar. Unique and exclusive food. The staff were lovely and took great care of their own. They have a bunch of drinks and desserts you ought to try. I highly recommend checking this place out!

Food is very good and reasonably priced. My Ruben sandwich had actual corned beef, not the supermarket deli crap I’ve gotten elsewhere. Real rye bread and excellent fries on the side. My partner’s meatloaf was equally good.

Square Pizza is a charming pizza joint located on Independence Square, offering delicious square-shaped pizzas with a delicate crust, homemade sauce, and fresh toppings. The casual retro interior features black and white tiled floors, classic booth seating, and an inviting ambience. Perfect for families, dates, or casual meals with friends, the restaurant also boasts arcade games for added entertainment.
This is one of the best pizza places in the United States. The crust is great, so is the cheese, and the toppings always taste fresh. My friends and I get it every time we are in MO, we ask for it by name!

This is a laid back pizza joint with lots of great combinations. I went with small personal size of the supreme pizza with peppers, mushrooms, and three types of meat. The dough is thicker, more substantial than a thin crust and is really filling. Square Pizza lives up to its name because they bake their pizzas in a square pan and are a great option in the sleepy town square.

Vivilore is an upscale American restaurant located in a beautiful redbrick building with a charming courtyard garden for al fresco dining. The elegant interior and European-style courtyard make it a hidden gem in Independence, Missouri. The menu offers modern American dishes like smoked salmon bruschetta and rib eye steak, as well as New Zealand rack of lamb and Pacific Coast wild salmon. In addition to the restaurant, Vivilore also features an adjacent antique store and art gallery, adding to its sophisticated atmosphere.
We adored this place. We had lunch midweek and it was a perfect time to go. Our sandwiches were excellent, and we got the corn chowder which ended up having crab in the soup which was excellent. I got the chicken chimichurri sandwich and it was delicious, I would definitely order that again, it was super flavorful. And the overall atmosphere and Ambience of the restaurants just beautiful, it's a real gem in the area.

Their salads are always good and the daily soup is pretty good too.

I really enjoyed my lunch here on the patio with friends yesterday. I wish I had more time to linger and shop here but since I wasn't I guess I have to return soon. Actually I can't wait to bring the princess here as I know this is the type of restaurant venue she will love. Although parting is somewhat limited there is plenty right in front. Easy to find right on east Winner road. The atmosphere is elegant both inside and out on the patio. I loved the food, and selection as well as the relaxed atmosphere. I had the soup and salad while my friends split the Rubin. Everything was served hot and reasonably fast. I would suggest reservations , although we were able to be seated quickly today they were really busy for a week day and we were lucky to be seated so quickly. I didn't have time today to peruse the antique store up stairs I will definitely return with the princess soon. Be sure to put Vivilore on your list!

The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum is a significant memorial that showcases the life and work of the 33rd president and his administration. It is one of the 14 U.S. presidential libraries and museums, housing extensive collections of historical documents related to pivotal events such as the Korean War, NATO, the Berlin Airlift, and the Manhattan Project.
We were blown away by our first visit to a Presidential Library. The inside went through an extensive renovation. The interactive displays and a walk through history was so fascinating. We spent about 3 hours here walking through history during Truman's life and presidency. We could have spent longer. There is so much to take in. Nice gift shop as well. A visit to the Truman Presidential Library sparked a new quest for us to visit all the Presidential Libraries. Guard was very friendly and conversational. Front desk staff couldn't have cared less if we were there or not.

Impressive creative exhibits chronologically depicting the life and events of President Harry S. Truman. Refreshes and reinforces ones knowledge of that time period in our history. There are so many important events magnified in displays that changed the world - WW II, Nuclear Bombs, UN, NATO, Israeli state. Berlin Airlift, Marshall Plan, McCarthy Hearings, etc. & gives us a better insight into HST's personal life & character. It is a wonderful museum that all the public, especially Americans, should see.

I loved seeing the reproductions of letters between Bess and Harry. The whole tour of the museum was thought-provoking and interesting. My family and I enjoyed it very much. We also visited the Truman Home nearby—it’s harder to get tickets but we were very glad we did. That tour taught us about the personal side of the Trumans. Unless your children are big history buffs, they will be bored. I recommend both places highly for kids twelve and up.

Thankfully we got to stop in just before the government shutdown began. The grounds are well kept, staff helpful and friendly. This was my first presidential library to visit and it was a great one to start with! So much historical information and artifacts to take in and appreciate.
Samantha P — Google review
Nice museum. The displays are well done and some are interactive. It was interesting to learn that Truman worked on site in an attached office for many years before his death and is ultimately buried at the museum. We spent a couple of hours at the museum. I think you could spend more time if you read every display. Overall it is worth the visit for fans of history and for anyone who wants to give their kids a rounded education.

What an experience! The museum is just the right size and contains some of the best immersive, interactive exhibits I have seen. My ten year old enjoyed it so much and was engaged with the variety of exhibits. He particularly liked learning about the candy bomber. The short films are amazing and help even someone who doesn’t have a vast knowledge of this era appreciate all that Truman and others were trying to accomplish. They do a good job I feel making it not feel terribly partisan, which was appreciated. Visit this presidential library then drive west 2.5 hours to Abilene and visit Eisenhowers! These libraries are doing such important work! We spent about three hours here and felt we pretty much covered it all. But do eat in advance as there is no cafeteria or food on site.

I have been trying to get to as many of these Presidential Libraries as possible. Ever since I stumbled across the first one I look for these whenever I’m traveling across the country they are an unsung look into American history, culture, and politics. I learned a lot about the 1940s and 50s and was impressed by Harry Truman’s Legacy.

I try never to miss an opportunity to visit a Presidential Library, so when I found myself in Kansas City, I took an Uber out to Independence to the Harry S.Truman Library. The permanent exhibit "An Ordinary Man, His Extraordinary Journey" was outstanding. I expected to learn about his life and the events of his presidency, and I did ... in great detail. The bonus was learning so much about the history of our country and the world in his time. I was especially fascinated by an exhibit of all the proposed programs and legislation of his 2nd term when he focused on the creation of NATO and the Marshall Plan and the post WWII United States. I spent 3 hrs. at the Library and wish I could have had 2 more to see everything.

The National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence, Missouri is a history museum and interpretive center that delves into the settlement of the American West through the California, Oregon, and Santa Fe Trails. It showcases exhibits featuring early fur trappers, Lewis and Clark's explorations, and reasons for westward migration. The museum houses original diaries, letters, covered wagons, and an award-winning film. Visitors can also explore a children's activity room.
Excellent little museum that is a must visit! You start off with a vintage video showing that’s about 20 mins long and then you move on. Lots to read and learn through out the tour, very informative about the transformation of how America became an enormous country. Cute little affordable gift shop at the end. We spent about 4hrs here even with it being small we may have to go back to keep reading what we may have missed. We will spent the winter weekends visiting places that independences has to offer for free!

The location has moved so we had to do a little searching to find it because the maps hadn’t been updated at that time. They had an interactive area for kids and adults alike. There was a lot of interesting historical information and artifacts available for viewing. At the time that we went, there weren’t many people there and the parking was plenty.

We visited the Trails Museum in August 2025. This is a great museum. There are exhibits of period gear and clothing, and explanations of trail development and the experiences of the pioneering Europeans. We spent almost two hours here, reading the numerous personal stories of those who traveled west. As visitors from the East Coast, we came away with a new appreciation of this part of American history.

Since Independence Missouri was the starting point for several other National Trails also, this was a nice museum to visit. There is a 20-minute video with several exhibits. Love this park and there's hardly anyone ever here so my kids don't have to share the swings
Christina G — Google review
I would probably be able to rate it 5 Stars had I visited during the day lol I was on a date and we had decided to stop by and sit in the parking lot for a little while. So I honestly didn't get the opportunity to neither see nor much enjoy any of the park lol but I can say that the parking lot surely is a great place and if you park in the right spot, the street lights aren't really too much of a bother

great place to go to when boredom strikes. nice view of nature. but the only thing is…no restrooms…not even an port a potty…have to go to quick trip if you gotta go…unfortunate.

I've visited this park a handful of times over the past year to take in some of natures beauty. The "woody" areas that surround the outer edge of the park as well as the section of woods that separates the spacious playground and the basketball courts make for a peaceful, relaxing adventure. What makes it even better is not having seeing any rubbish/trash scattered about!

Park is beautiful but becareful of the neighborhood. Was walking my dog and a truck hit me. Gentleman who was driving the white truck lives right on the corner of 9th st and Claremont.

Very nice park. Pretty clean. Safe place to take the kids or hangout During Hours of Operation. But if you're taking little ones or plan on being there a minute take your own drink, 1 water fountain (barely works)& no facilities to tinkle& or poo🤔

Beautiful Day to be in the park. This is an all around nice park...very neat and clean. Nice shelter for picnicking and there's even a basketball court nearby for the little guys who likes to play.

Italian restaurant
Cafe
Café Verona is a charming eatery, featuring traditional Italian favorites as well as modernized dishes, all served in a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere adorned with murals. The outdoor seating option allows patrons to enjoy their meals on the patio. Customers have praised the attentive and helpful wait staff, while also hailing the exceptional quality of the food. A delightful salad dressed in vinegrette is followed by mouthwatering lasagna and Alfredo pasta that are considered among the finest available.
This is a gem of a restaurant in downtown independence. Took an out of town guest here for a late dinner and we had very prompt and friendly service. Very nicely decorated, especially the artwork on the walls, and there's a beautiful patio area for outdoors dining. They allow pets on leashes in the patio dining area. I thought the calamari was decent, but the chicken spinach pecan salad was excellent.

My birthday is on Valentine’s Day and I always pick an Italian restaurant. I worked in the restaurant industry for 30 years so I understand Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days. I made my reservation early, 5:15, and we got there around 4:45 because I wanted to have a glass of wine and relax before ordering. My husband ordered the flatbread which really didn’t have any taste. We both ordered our entrees because our server kept coming to our table. My husband ordered because he was hungry. I said that I wanted to wait for mine so I could have another glass of wine, since I bought a bottle for our table. My waitress basically ordered mine with my husband’s after I said I wanted to relax and have another glass of wine. That’s why we came earlier than our reservation. I felt rushed since the time we sat down. Which was disappointing to me. Our entree’s were okay. I was excited about the olive oil cake but it was dry. I don’t mind paying for a great dinner but all in all I was disappointed after looking forward to trying Cafe Verona. Next year I’ll try a different Italian restaurant.

Delicious food and excellent service in a very cozy restaurant on the Independence Square. This was our first visit and we were very impressed. The Chicken Parmesan and Gnocchi were delicious as was the beet and Caesar salad. Their menus is full of traditional Italian pastas and meat dishes at very reasonable prices. A great wine and cocktail list too. Highly recommended!

I went to cafe Verona for my birthday dinner. I called earlier in the week to make a reservation for 15. They had the perfect set up. They have bar seating, booths, then an upstairs for larger parties. The food was 12/10. I got the caprese salad and the chicken speidini both were the weekend specials. My biggest complaint is this is not on the permanent menu. It was the best pasta I’ve had in a LONG time. I would mark it as the second best Italian restaurant I’ve ever been to. The drink were also 10/10 I got the lemonchello spritz and a mule with amaretto. We had an awesome meal that came out pricier than expected. I’m happy to pay good money for good food, just something I wish I had mentally prepared for more. The parking was easy there is street parking then a lot right next to the building as well. I love the square as you can walk everywhere. Go shopping or hit up some of the bars. I cannot wait to come back and try another meal. Everyone in my party enjoyed what they got and had clean plates!

Went to the Cafe Verona for the first time. Most of us had the Lemon Basil Shrimp pasta it tasted great, we also had the Calimari which was also great. I couldn't stop eating it. If you are at The Square in Independence definitely check them out.
Ben B — Google review
The food was alright, it wasn't spectacular as hoped. The pesto primavera with Italian sausage was alright, and so was the goat cheese frittata. However, the BMT sandwich and the fries were delicious. The bruschetta was sweeter than expected. On the bright side, it had a Tuscan feel to it both inside and outside.
Travis T — Google review
This place was a great time, food was excellent and atmosphere was top shelf! It's a little pricey ($12 1/2 glass of wine, $20+ for all entrees, & $13+ for appetizers), but the food was really good 👍. I would specifically ask for the upstairs seating and make a reservation, to make sure. It kinda overlooks Independence Square, and is cozy, away from the busy downstairs. Took my wife & son for her birthday. Great times! 😁👍✌🏻

2025 UPDATE: Menu changes! Meatballs aren’t just for Mondays anymore…. They now offer a meatball sandwich every day on their menu. They’ve also added a side order of their delicious macaroni & cheese and a lemony, creamy, cheesy seafood ravioli dish that is ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥! I love this place! It’s a small Italian restaurant on the historic Independence square with indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a full bar, banquet room and they cater! I had the delicious tiramisu for dessert but ate it before remembering to take a pic!

Chinese restaurant
If you're on the hunt for a delightful Chinese dining experience in Independence, look no further than Lao Peking Chinese Restaurant. This gem has been a go-to spot for many locals who appreciate its extensive menu filled with mouthwatering options. From their tender chicken on a stick to the best egg drop soup around, every dish is crafted with care and flavor. The steamed dumplings come highly recommended, especially when paired with their irresistible dipping sauce that’s so good you might want to savor it by itself!
Great service!!!! As soon as you walk into the restaurant you’re welcomed by a neat waterfall. The sweet old lady behind the counter is very help full. They are fast at what they do. And their crab ragoon is so sweet!!!
Harls B — Google review
Edible at best…inside looks like a well kept garage to say the least…dark and not very inviting…the smell does nothing to attract your appetite…the waitress was friendly at least…the food was overly priced for what you get…I do not recommend the chili oil for all you spice heads…it tasted like wet rotten spices…the crab ragoons are skimpy and stale with an overly powering sweetness…the chicken was tender and the gen sao sauce was alright..having said all that if your fav spot is closed don’t waste your money here…I recommend a loaf of bread and lunch meat…you’ll thank me later🫡

We live about 10 minutes away and this has become our favorite local takeout spot. The sesame chicken is my daughter’s favorite, my husband always gets the chicken skewers, and I switch between the General Tso’s and Kung Pao. It’s always good, portions are big, and the staff remember our faces now which is nice.
AllzZz — Google review
Their delivery is always earlier than expected, which is awesome when you’re starving after work. Food comes hot, well-packed, and smells amazing the second you open the bag.

This place used to be great, not sure what's going on now, chicken on stick is thin one stick was two small pieces, food is cold, I'm less than 3m away, cutting costs at corners will drive away people. Gonna leave this here and try again later, for now going somewhere else. 10/3/25

HiBoy Drive-In

Hamburger restaurant
HiBoy Drive-In is a classic American burger counter that offers a nostalgic dining experience. Their signature quarter-pound Hi Boy burger, topped with cheese, pickles, onions, and their special Hi-Boy sauce, is a must-try. In addition to burgers, they also serve pork tenderloin, fried fish sandwiches with tartar sauce, fried pickles, stuffed tots, shakes, floats and limeades. The 24 Highway location in Independence is particularly popular for its old-school charm.
We stopped by for an early lunch. There was only one other couple eating at the time. The food was good. What you would expect for this type of restaurant. What we really liked was how clean everything was. Not just the tables but the window sills, the floor and even the corners of the floor. I don’t know if it’s always this way but after a week of traveling and experiencing sticky tables and floors at multiple stops this was a nice change.
Chris E — Google review
I was excited to try HiBoy as I was in the neighborhood. I’ve driven by many times! The food was fast and service was friendly! I got the double HiBoy and tots. The tots were crispy and fresh! The burger was good, just not as much flavor and the cheese and sauce was less than I expected. I would try it again though.
John D — Google review
HiBoy is a classic old school burger joint. If I was lucky as a kid, we would stop here for lunch. They sponsor little league teams and have a bunch of trophies on display in the lobby. The HiBoy burger is a lot like a whopper. Their onion rings are good and plentiful. My soda was strong on the soda and weak on the syrup, which usually is a transient issue. The food is enjoyable, but it is overpriced. Getting lunch here is a small trip down memory lane for me. I’ll grab a burger here once a year or so when I get back to the town of my birth and enjoy it even though I know that I’m paying too much.
Jeffrey P — Google review
This was the first time I'd been taken here, and I was somewhat impressed. I ordered a cheeseburger with tater tots. My burger was a bit dry and hard around the edges. The tater tots, though, were amazing.
Daygun S — Google review
Food is consistent as is service. Big thing is always clean. No trash no dirty tables no smell. And they let me bring my bike inside without giving me a fuss so that's nice
Anthony P — Google review
I stopped by and decided to try this place for the first time. Stepping inside, the place feels like stepping into the 1980s. Everything from the seating to the style probably hasn’t changed much since then, but honestly, that’s kind of the charm. I ordered the Hi-Boy burger combo with fries and a drink, and it came out really fast. The burger was decent, not amazing, but not bad either. They used a ketchup and mayo mix on it, which I actually really liked. Salsa rosada for those who know it. The fries were great. Fresh, crispy, and tasted exactly how you want drive-in fries to taste, but the portion was really small. Definitely not enough for what they charge. The whole meal cost $15.35, which felt high considering what I got. Especially when you think about the location, it’s one of the lowest income areas of the city, and this definitely isn’t budget-friendly food. All in all, I’d call the experience decent, but nothing to go out of your way for. The food was okay, the fries were solid, and the atmosphere was kind of fun in a dated way. But for over fifteen bucks, I expected a little more.
Timothy T — Google review
I finally got to visit Hi-Boy in Sugar Creek. The staff was friendly, the dining area was clean and bright, and the burger and fries were tasty and made in that old fashioned style that I like. I'm really glad I got to drop by!

It's an ideal spot for hiking with kids, featuring short unpaved trails and a mile-long paved loop. The park also includes picnic areas, a butterfly garden, and nature programs for all ages. Visitors can enjoy the undisturbed scenic beauty of forests and lakes while exploring the hiking trails.
Great place for a hike with the kids. They enjoyed the snakes and turtles in the nature center and looking for frogs by the lake shore. No crowds and there are plenty of tables/benches throughout the park. Plenty of beautiful nature views. Several Paved and unpaved trails to enjoy.

This is a sweet little spot! This would definitely be a place to let kids get tired! It's got plenty of easy paths and trails; decide on dirt or paved. Great little picnic areas and fishing spots on two small yet lovely lakes. There are benches along the journey for moments of observation and reflection, or just enjoy the natural scenery. It's more than you might expect, and it's a little bit off the path. But EXTREMELY well cared for and marked for an leisurely walk through a little paradise at the end of a road!

We went to the Hummingbird Festival at George Owens Nature Park and had a blast! They were very informative and had a great setup where we got to watch dozens of hummingbirds fly around and feed during their migration. They also have a very fun, not scary Enchanted Forest in October for kiddos. Would absolutely recommend to families.

This place is beautiful. I occasionally take my dog here, and we always see wildlife. Very peaceful and not many people when we have been there. There are paved walking trails and trails back in the woods that are not paved. There is a lake area and some picnic tables and benches along the trail to set at. I have never been in the buildings, so I am not sure what's in those. Anyway, we really love this place!

Park
Clothier Park offers a great walking track and various amenities for both kids and adults. The park features a basketball court, swings, gym equipment, and a playground that is just enough to keep kids interested. Visitors can enjoy the friendly atmosphere and feel safe in the area. Additionally, the park's proximity to new facilities such as the Independence Power and Light offices and the new nine-one-one center adds to its appeal.
Nice park. I see a lot of people walking the track but the exercise equipment is in good shape & relevant to today. The playground has just enough for kids to be interested. Plenty of easy parking.
Joey G — Google review
Nice little park for kiddos 5+. The equipment was good, but it's a little difficult for younger children. Simple, relaxing go to area for some excercising or just to use some energy. There's a walking sidewalk path around the play area and the park. Many go there to just walk laps or use the exercising equipment section (which is near the playground on the opposite side of the picnic tables) from what I've seen. There's an open grassy area and a half basketball court next to the playground as well. No restrooms from what I could see.
Sarai W — Google review

The Bingham-Waggoner Estate, located near Independence Square in Missouri, is a historic 19-acre property that offers a glimpse into the past. Originally established in 1827 along the Santa Fe Trail, this estate was once home to George Caleb Bingham and has retained over 90% of its original furnishings. Visitors can explore the well-preserved mansion and its grounds to gain insights into the lifestyle of its affluent 19th-century residents. Situated near attractions like the Harry S.
Went there for a 50th wedding anniversary. Saw my group of girlfriends from elementary and middle school! It's a nice place for small, cozy events.

This beautiful old mansion near downtown Independence Missouri is a wonderful place to visit. Our tour was led by Madelline, who was really one of the most knowledgeable guides ever. The only negative was that the old house was a little hot in the late afternoon when we went. Other than than that we loved it.
Steven H — Google review
I emailed in advance to ask if reservations were necessary, was told it wasn’t. The property is so cool, and there is a state owned trail route preserving wagon trail ruts on the back side of the estate property. Crossing a bridge in a woody area, leads to the trail from the parking lot. Taking a loop back to the lot, we approached the carriage house to start a guided tour of the house. It begins with an informative video explaining the history of the property, previous owners, etc. Our guide explained the tour is about an hour (huge house), and was really easy going and made us feel comfortable and not rushed. I was blown away by the restoration of the painting details in almost every room. Such cool, decorative detailing! And I appreciate the few sections that show what the original paint looks like aged. My favorite detail was the dog scratches on the sleeping porch doors! So neat to experience, it feels like time was frozen and you can immerse yourself in a different time. I regrettably didn’t take any photos other than the hilarious one pictured. If you have any interest in history, architecture, art, you have to give this place a visit.
Mike H — Google review
We had a great time on our tour & the tour guide that we had for our group (we were split into 2 groups) was fantastic! She never made us feel like we were misbehaving (because we were & we're all over the age of 40! Lol!) and she stayed on track, as well as repeated information because some of us were either checking something else out that caught our eye or we were just talking. Kudos to the tour guides & ours MOST ESPECIALLY & although I cannot remember her name, she knows who she is! The house was beautiful & it was so Extremely cool that we could actually sit on the furniture & carefully touch historic items, to learn about the paintings & the history behind them. My personal favorite was the unfinished 3rd floor...wow!! The architecture is just phenomenal! My other favorite room was the kitchen/walk-in chiller room. Such great history. Kinda ironic that my 2 favorite places were for the servants back in the day. This was 1 of 2 things my Aunt Marsha wanted to do on her 70th birthday & thank you to the staff for helping make her day even more special.
Angela E — Google review
What a hidden gem!!! My friend and I had the place all to ourselves with Steve, from the Historical Society. Steve was very informative and went out of his way to share the estate with us. Each room so nicely preserved. The chandeliers with gas and electric options were so cool. 90% of the furniture and items in the house are original to the house. A must see when visiting Independence!!

Bingham-Waggoner Estate complex goes back to 1850's. The home has historical architecture, artifacts and stories that seem to come alive we we took a tour with a wonderful volunteer guide. The estate is maintained by efforts from good samaritans, volunteers and community. We attended a wedding and the ambience with lush green grand old trees, some blooming with flowers, and pleasant scents of outdoors were a treat to the senses. The interior is a little staid, could do better with maintenance and humidity control, all depending on lining up sufficient resources. Thank you for preserving this important landmark.

Dog park
The Dog Park at Santa Fe Park is a delightful oasis for both dogs and their owners, offering a serene environment where furry friends can frolic freely. With designated areas for small and large dogs, this park features ample space for play, lush trees providing shade, and convenient water stations to keep pups hydrated. Visitors often rave about the friendly atmosphere—both among the dogs and their humans—making it an ideal spot to socialize while enjoying nature.
Lots of room for my dog to run and has things for her to play on. Nice lil park.

I took my dogs here for the first time. It was nice! All the dogs that were there were really sweet. They had doggie bags for poop available in several places. The space is nice and big. They have two benches. One bench in the big dog area and another bench in the small dog area. I think everyone that goes there generally keeps the spaces open to each other, so there is no separation between dog sizes. Although, you could close the door in the middle if you did want to separate them.
Mishael B — Google review
There are two huge fenced in areas which are connected with a gate. Poop bags are provided along with water fountains and water bowls. There is an agility course on one side along with many different tennis balls and benches for owners to sit and watch their fur babies play. Everyone is really friendly and my puppy LOVES going every time! The park is right next to walking trails and playgrounds and everything for everyone to come and enjoy. It's kept very clean and will definitely be returning!

This is an amazing dog park not too many people. Lots of trees for plenty of shade water hose and fountain on site as well as buckets of fresh water. The people we did run into were very friendly and so were their dogs it’s a very peaceful park to gather thoughts and watch your dogs get rid of energy and have fun making new friends. I would definitely recommend visiting at least once and I will definitely be returning myself so hopefully we meet.😁

Fast food restaurant
Arby's is a beloved fast-food chain that has carved out a niche for itself with its signature roast beef sandwiches, alongside an array of hot and cold options, fries, and shakes. Many patrons have shared their experiences of rediscovering the joy of Arby's after years away, often highlighting the quick service and satisfying meals served piping hot.
The food here is affordable and satisfactory. I like the chicken sandwiches and curly fries. So far I haven't had any issues with our food or service here. The workers here are respectful and polite, and it is kid-friendly. We dined in on a Tuesday evening around 6pm and it was nice and quiet. The tables and seats are tidy, and the women's restroom is clean too, however my husband said the men's restroom was dirty. We will be back again for some time to come if it stays this way.

These people were so rude ,unprofessional May Arby's at this location not receive any more customers!!! you reap what you sow, I have video and pictures. He didn't want to repeat what he said to me said, that I couldn't come back because I've been there multiple times and I was rude 😂 lies .No what happened was he acted like he didn't want to understand what I was saying in the Drive-Thru he said he didn't understand and I asked him is it that he does not understand English? What I believe is he didn't want to make no fresh fries .Waiting in line to receive old fries is insane as much as Arby's charges I spent almost $30 I should get fresh fries but when I pulled upto the window he said to me that they were already fresh when they gave them to me 😂 I've worked at an Arby's 😂 they were old, then he changed up and said no I have fresh fries for you. They all thought it was a joke and they all laughed and nothing is funny about spending my money on old food .and picking your nose serving customers 🤢 no hygiene at all that is so disgusting especially since I work hard for my own money. But as soon as I started filming he didn't want to repeat what he said. I will not be going back here and I advise everyone not to go because you will not receive good service they will give you old food because they want to close early. Giving me a burnt chicken patty was so hard i couldn't even eat it ! This is Arby's I cannot believe this!!! I pray and hope all of them get fired!!! I didn't even see this till I got home this wasn't even the fries 😔 that were cold. If I could give a zero 😕

I normally don't put names in my reviews but Miryam on date 6/27/25 at approximately 6:15 and 43 seconds needs to be retrained. Not only was she incredibly rude but she also messed up our order no worries it happens, but when we told her that there were things that we had not ordered that she had put on our order not only did she not correctly fix it but she also up charged us for things we did not order. She thought we ordered a #6 when we told her no we wanted the #1 she first just thought that we wanted the sandwich we told her no we wanted the meals and the drinks to be without ice. Total ended up being way more than what we expected but we didn't think of anything others first when we got to the window we very clearly watched the employee put ice in our drinks when it clearly stated on our receipt that there were no ice to be added to the drinks we return the drinks and told her they were to be without ice one root beer one Dr Pepper she remade the drinks both were Dr Pepper we did not realize this until we got home then looking more closely at the receipt we find out we were charged for two bacon classic meals add roast beef at $5 extra per sandwich making the total for that meal 15.39 x 2 we wanted the number one meaning 11:39 x 2 there was no bacon just a plane roast beef and cheddar which we wanted but we were charged for the bacon classic. I normally love going to this particular Arby's because the manager there has been amazing but the workers that I've seen the last few times. I won't be going back until they are retrained or fired

Wowwowwow I love Arby's. Big roast beef and potato cakes and a drink only $10 :) The shop is clean and comfortable the service was very polite the young man even brought my lunch over to my table

I orderer a 9 piece steak nugget, potato cakes, and a large jamoca shake. Take out. Holy moly 17 dollar, but okay i want to try the new steak nuggets. Get home. Only got a 5 piece and some curley fries. Not what i ordered. And the steak nuggets suck! My bad for not checking the bag. But god as my witness ill never eat at arbys again. Certainly not this location!

Holy smokes this place it just amazes me, we ordered first and had other people come in and order and the people who order after us got they're food first I don't know what was going on but we got our food last and after what seemed like 20 minutes and this is how I got my wrap, definitely not worth the money. Not enough filling for the wrap. The tenders were super small. Luckily the manager was in the store and I was able to complain and get a refund. Definitely will not be coming back to this place. If I wanted my food to be mess up I would had gone to taco bell.
Kellie S — Google review
I have never had bad food from this place. Until today ( 6/24/25 ) at 4.30pm it was absolutely horrible. I went through the drive thru and I ordered a Hot ham and Cheese meal. The cheese was like rubber the ham was hard, I ordered crinkle fries and I got curly fries. You pay good hard earned money and you get garbage. It will be a while before I come back.
Douglas D — Google review
The lady working drive thru had a kind and calm demeanor. Very pleasant person! My food was hot and fresh & fries were super crispy.

Up Dog

Hot dog restaurant
Restaurant
Located in downtown Independence, Up Dog is a laid-back eatery with a classic diner ambiance that specializes in serving up mouthwatering grilled hot dogs. Whether you prefer the traditional Chicago-style dog or something more unique like the Hawaiian with ham and pineapple sauce, Up Dog offers a variety of options to satisfy your cravings. From the jalapeno/bacon Rio Dog to the beef and blue cheese Blue Heeler, there's a hot dog for every taste.
Even though it’s been around since 2011, Up Dog is a hidden gem located on the square in Independence, MO. From stepping foot in the door, you can’t go wrong. Wide variety of different styles of Hot Dogs & Burgers. I went with the classic Chicago Hot Dog. Staff was VERY friendly, and when they weren’t slinging hotdogs on the grill, they were keeping everything spotless. Definitely worth returning!
Randy C — Google review
There were a few issues such as menu board didn't match the menus on table, they were out of one or two sodas at the fountain, they were out of medium lids and they didn't appear to have napkin dispensers- just napkins stacked on the tables. It was pricey, with two hot dogs with sides and drinks coming to $34. That being said, the service was exceptional. Just very friendly, top-notch staff. The Chicago dog was good, as well as onion rings and chili cheese fries. Would return to try the burgers and other hot dog selection.
Madeline — Google review
We were in the neighborhood to visit a store nearby. We decided to stop in for lunch. I thoroughly enjoyed my burger. It was so tasty! My family was worried about the prices, and I'll be honest, they do seem high at first. Once you compare them to larger chain locations, I'd rather support local as there is not a huge difference between the two in price.
Marc G — Google review
Best Chicago dog outside Chicago. Menu includes brats, chicken tenders, and pulled pork. My wife had the pulled pork and said it was first rate. The house seasoned fries are amazing. Good tots and excellent onion rings round out the main choices.
Robert P — Google review
Awesome little retro diner atmosphere. Menu on board in store is not updated. They just added smash burgers so I’m excited to try that next visit. The hot dogs are Nathan’s all beef thick dogs and taste great. My favorite is the chili cheese dog with seasoned fries. The only thing we were not a huge fan of was the chicken strips. They had a very lemony taste with whatever they sprinkle on them. Everything else was great.
Michael W — Google review
Very nice place they greeted me nicely when I walked in and where very nice throughout the entire time I was there, the food was amazing and they even have a dog bowl at the door if you have a dog.
Musaa E — Google review
Such a cool place in downtown independence, and not to mention that the hotdogs were pretty good too! I’ll definitely have to come back sometime.
Kya D — Google review
My friends and I went to lunch at Up Dog. It has a nice, friendly atmosphere. The hot dogs turned out to be really good. They were also good-sized. The four of us were happy we all ate there. The town Square is a fun place to visit and bring out-of-town friends! Afterward, we went and visited the Bingham Wagner mansion for a tour of the Estate. What a wonderful day.

If you're on the lookout for a family-friendly dining experience, look no further than Pizza Street! This local Italian buffet chain is a haven for pizza and pasta lovers, featuring an extensive salad bar and delightful dessert options. Recently, I took my kids there for the first time in years, and they were absolutely thrilled with their meals. The staff was incredibly accommodating, crafting pizzas to perfection that even my picky eaters couldn't resist.
I go here a few times a month for the Alfredo pizza and salad bar. I can put some food away, so I love a buffet for the quantity and variety. I've never had a problem at this location, not with staff or quality of food. There's always a million kids, so it gets loud, but that's to be expected. I love Pizza Street!
Shelby A — Google review
Great variety. Several desserts, a salad bar, and at least 12 kinds of pizza. They will make a pizza for you if you don't see it on the buffet. Clean store. Small arcade. 9/10 for a budget pizza buffet.
Ricky T — Google review
Went there the other day with both my kids. My daughter n son. Mind you it's been many yrs since I've last been. The The service there was amazing. Everyone was very polite especially with my kids. They understood the pizza my kids wanted it and made it to perfection for them. They never had pizza street before and I took them there. They absolutely loved it. Pizza normally they both wouldn't eat they were loving the pizza. I've always loved pizza streets pizza ever since I was a kid. 100/100 for my kids n I.

This specific location, not much better than the 291 location. We were there for 2 hrs, they left the same apple desert pizza put that entire time. Never replaced it with fresh. They didn't have a big variety of pizzas put and no basics literally. No cheese no pepperoni and no reg sausage. All of them looked dried up and you could definitely tell by eating they were old. In the 2 hrs there wasn't much fresh pizzas put out. The "cheese sticks" literally had zero cheese on them. We won't go back to this one. Just tried it to try this location. Still to the one on Noland road it's GREAT!!
Kas D — Google review
The pizza here is alright, the price is decent. The only good pizza here is the Mac and Cheese Pizza. All of the others is just generic. If you want a better pizza buffet. Go to CiCi’s or Pizza Ranch.

🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟 5 stars all around! 🍕 Pizza Street To Go Fed my whole family for under $20! We grabbed a medium half Buffalo Chicken (with black olives) / half Pepperoni and a medium Spinach Alfredo. Four hungry kids and one adult fed for the evening..♡… we still had leftovers!
Ashly C — Google review
We love coming for the deals! My kids can eat as much as much as their little hearts desire. We’ve never had a wait or much of a line. They are quick with putting fresh food out.
Anie S — Google review
You could tell the pizzas were made with love tonight. Whoever was making the pizzas (especially the apple dessert pizza) on night shift was making them perfect. 😁 Also the salad bar was super fresh and absolutely delicious! 🤌

Mexican restaurant
La Fuente Mexican Restaurant is a delightful haven for those craving authentic Mexican cuisine in the suburban Kansas City area, with multiple locations including Lees Summit, Independence, Kearney, and Smithville. This informal eatery serves up classic dishes like deep-fried chimichangas topped with white cheese dip and an array of soft shell tacos filled with your choice of steak, grilled chicken, al Pastor or carnitas.
They have the best fried Mexican ice cream I’ve ever had. I just wish the cornflake coating was blended before fried so that it wouldn’t be so hard when eating it due to the cold ice cream. I also wish they didn’t mix the cornflakes into the ice cream itself it kinda ruins the texture but overall is absolutely delicious. The food is absolutely delicious too a little on the salty side, but very enjoyable. 10/10 recommend ❤️❤️

Great experience. As a women from California I love and know mexican food! The al pastor fajitas were some of the best ive ever had! 110 percent i would recommend

Went to meet a date for the first time. Nice atmosphere and quiet, which made it easy to talk. The margarita was really nice and they had several to choose from. Chips and salsa were given and they were nice. Chips came out hot and the salsa was mild. I plan on going back very soon as the menu looked chock full of good things to try.

La Fuente is one of my favorite local spots! Amazing carnitas dinner plate! I seen a poster that they have black margaritas now! Super excited to try them!!! They are so hard to find
Kendell L — Google review
The food was flavorful, and the prices were great for the amount of food we received. We visited during lunchtime. I ordered the lunch chimichanga with their horchata. My mom ordered the full order of fajita nachos, and my grandma ordered the lunch fajita burrito. Everything was delicious, and the staff was very accommodating and friendly.
Salia H — Google review
It was decent food and generous portion size. Lacked bold flavors but had a nice quality to the ingredients. Staff did excellent with the size of party we had. A couple hiccups but to be expected when seating 30 + people. I would recommend if in the neighborhood .

4.5 stars. The hot sauce was too watery with a lot of vinegar taste. However, this has been the best Mexican food, so far, I've had in KC.

One of our favorite restaurants to eat at. It’s a nice quiet spot. Usually pretty quick with the food. I don’t think we’ve ever had any issues with anything we’ve ordered! Kid friendly. 🙂
