Malindi in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Malindi, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Malindi offers a mix of Indian Ocean beaches, coral reefs and Swahili, Arab and European influences visible in its architecture and cuisine. Travelers come for snorkeling and diving in nearby marine parks, dhow boat trips and relaxed seaside resorts. The historic old town, Vasco da Gama Pillar and Gede Ruins close by provide insight into the region’s trading past. Its warm climate and coastal scenery make it a popular alternative to busier beach hubs along Kenya’s coast.
With favorites like Osteria Beach Bar & Restaurant, Vasco da Gama Pillar, and Coco Beach, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Hosteria Romana Watamu and Coco Beach so you can get the best taste of Malindi while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Malindi marine boat excursions offer a fantastic way to explore the coastal town's aquatic wonders. The tour takes you on a water vessel with a skilled captain and friendly crew to three pristine islands, showcasing their natural beauty. The Malindi Marine National Park, adjacent to Malindi Beach, is home to prolific marine life including crabs, sea urchins, jellyfish, and more.
There's not much going on there, to be honest. Great views for sure. And we walked from the marine park to Vasco da gama pillar, so a good experience generally. You will be required to pay for some things there though, that's if you want, for example the excursions. But the entrance is free for the beach. Don't carry plastics, though. That's prohibited
Edwin M — Google review
The variety of exotic marine life was breathtaking. The local guides are super knowledgeable and really love the ecosystem. How to get there: Malindi Marine Park is located 25mins away from Malindi town. You can use a private taxi, a three-wheeler (Tuktuk) or a motorcycle. The boats all have lifesaver jackets and the guides are well trained. What to carry: Swims suits and loooots of sunscreen😄. The expert guides will provide you with snorkeling equipment within the package. Payment: You will need to pay the Kenya Wildlife Society (KWS) Park Entry fees at the gate, either via Mpesa, or Card. No cash payment is accepted for the entry. The boat excursion will range between $45 - $65 depending on whether you're on a private excursion and you have the whole boat to yourself or whether you're sharing with other guests. Time: There's two type of experiences while at Malindi Marine Park. You can decide to do the full day excursion which sets from 9am, and sails to the Marine Park, and further to the Magic Island, and finally to a private island deep in the water. Here, you'll get a chance to eat freshly grilled seafood. Boats return by 3pm. The other shorter and more popular experience is the Marine Park and Magic Island excursion which takes roughly 1.5 - 3hrs depending on the time you visit.

We called the number stated here and were connected to a guy, who came to our hotel to explain about the different options or boat trips. We got a very decent price for snorkeling and bbq on the island. We booked a private tour. All was very well organized, very polite captains and delicious food!

Malindi Marine Park is a breathtaking destination with clear blue waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life, perfect for snorkeling and boat rides. The experience is made even better by Captain John Boen, an outstanding tour guide and captain who is friendly, knowledgeable, and ensures visitors feel safe and entertained throughout the trip. His passion for the ocean and excellent guidance make a visit to Malindi Marine Park truly unforgettable.

Situated in the heart of Malindi, this restaurant provides an ideal setting for a romantic fine dining experience. The best restaurant in Malindi, Kenya! Awesome service, the most delicious food I’ve ever ate - grill platter with lobster and mixed seafoods! We celebrated birthday of my mother and the stuff was super kind and made our party 🎊 The views from the restaurant were amazing, the atmosphere were super good and the beach in front made it look like paradise!
Vyara I — Google review
Well, mixed feeling about this place... The starter was a carpaccio from a red snapper, which was the worst carpaccio for the whole month of stay in Kenya...The fish seems was like a paper, it looks like it was defrosted quickly and served, also it filled like it was marinaded with a vinegar or something sour, while it supposed to be a raw fresh with olive oil. The tuna tartar was OK, not the best, but okay. The main course was the best one - nicely grilled squid (tasty but small portion), lobster and piece of fish, everything was well grilled and good. Served with good chips (french fries). Pizza in this place is average, mid size only available. Wine part: there were only 2 kind of wines offered in the bottles, but it was just a regular wine that you can buy in the supermarket 3 times cheaper (fact, checked ✔️), so we asked for a few glasses of the house wine. It was good, but overpriced for a glass. I think this place is good overall, but improvement in the service is needed, more wines to add to the list, there are good wines in Africa, also it is very important to have a napkins served for the each table (we did not have any, while other tables had them).
Maxim N — Google review
Confusing entrance & I think they have sold this restaurant so someone else because the name on the gate is different. Fantastic seating at the beach, remove your shoes & let your feet sink into the sand. Food was ok, I don’t understand why people assume we want the pizzas to be ‘extra cheesy’ - a little goes a long way. They were also out of some items in the menu including drinks! Would recommend Rosada which is next to this restaurant.
Irfan V — Google review
Good service and clean bathrooms. Loved the pizza as well, perfect thin crust. Sit inside if you don't like the wind blowing fiercely, but if the beach is for you, knock yourself out.
Abigail A — Google review
Absolutely amazing dining experience. You can either sit under a beautiful shaded veranda, or dine right on the beach with your toes in the sand. We went twice, once in the evening and once for lunch. Amazing pizza, I recommend the seafood pizza especially. Ingredients were fresh and prepared well. For lunch we ordered sea food platters. The lobster and prawns were fantastic. Good selection of non alcoholic drinks. We got the virgin pina colada, excellent and refreshing. Would definitely recommend this place for any holiday goers in Malindi. It's not too far from town. 5-10 min drive. Very accessible by tuktuk as well. Should not cost you more than 150 from Malindi town centre.
D I — Google review
Lovely ambiance and beautiful breeze. The service was good right from the car park guy. The food was ok. Our table had the grilled snapper and pastas. The carbonara was on the saltier side but overall ok. Ice cream was good. There are stands selling clothes and african jewelry.
Berny K — Google review
I was excited to go to Osteria, given the raving reviews I’d heard. Not so excited anymore. The service is for tears and the set-up of the place is so average. The pizza was good though, and the wine was also quite nice. The ambience is not bad, it makes for a nice experience to eat by the ocean.
Michelle N — Google review
A mouthwatering variety of dishes, exceptionally well done food, paired with bad service. Set by the beach with a cool breeze, has a small pool perfect for kids, and beach beds. Has a broad variety of Italian dishes and fish, from pizza to risotto. Only draw back is exceptionally slow service. If you aren't willing to spent most of your afternoon waiting for your food, might not be the place for you. Have a flight to catch? You might as well end up leaving your food as it does take more than an hour, even after you mention that you have a flight when making your order.

Vasco da Gama Pillar, a historic site in Malindi, is one of the oldest remaining Portuguese monuments in Africa. Erected in 1498 by Vasco da Gama during his voyage to India, this coral column topped with a Lisbon stone cross symbolizes the appreciation for the welcome he received in Malindi. It stands as an iconic structure representing the historical connection between Portuguese and Kenyan cultures.
My wife and I did a visit to the Vasco da Gama Pillar in Malindi, and it was such a memorable experience. Standing by the historic monument, with the ocean stretching out behind it, really made us feel connected to the past. The views were breathtaking, and hearing the waves crash below added to the magic of the moment. It was a special stop on our trip, where history and nature came together beautifully. We appreciated our guide for the explanations 👏🏽👍🏼

I lived the dedicated tour guide and explanations of things that happened. I loved to see the first catholic church and also to know the traditions of Mijikenda people in the coast. It was a lovely experience.

If someone is at coast in Malindi and misses to visit this place, then one would miss a very important piece from history of not only this region but also of South Asia as well. This place reminds how and what was discovered and what is importance of this coast of today’s Kenya. The entrance requires a ticket which includes a guide who accompanies when you visit the place and briefs in detail about the history. Price of entry ticket is reasonable and one caution in parking. The parking closer to the small office is safe place to park, I mean the office where they issue tickets but this is not very spacious and you will be lucky if you will find parking there.

The beach was absolutely stunning with massive waves crashing against the shore . Standing at Vasco da Gama's pillar felt like touching centuries of maritime history. From the raw energy of those incredible waves to the timeless stories carved in coral stone, Malindi is where adventure meets heritage. An unforgettable coastal experience! 🌊⚓

One of the good shop "Natural Lamu" who sells organic products very nice and I recommend to buy and try to promote such initiatives. I have enjoyed Malindi I am sure you will also enjoy 😉.

Second stop on my 5 days journey to Kenya. It was smooth landing, well nurtured lawns, clean and clear environment, lovely and welcoming airport staff, great public service system etc. We got out luggage offloaded from the plane fairly quickly and we were out of the airport in no time. No pressure at all.

I was robbed of about USD 300 by KAA staff and/or Jambojet attendants at the KAA security point. They took the money out of my wallet and money belt when they were separated from me at the checkpoint. So just be wary. Put your cash/money belt/wallet deep in your bag in a secure spot before you go through security.

Peter O — Google review
Watamu has a very unique and interesting beach experience. A large portion of the coast is covered tall rock cliffs. This lends itself to some every unique exploring and some cool stuff to see. High tide is beautiful with the waves crashing over the rocks. The beach portions are predominantly white sand and are great for sandcastle building or beach sports. The wildlife is less than some other parts of the coast and the sunrise/sunset can be hard to see because of the coves, however it's a gorgeous place to live or vacation.

Hosteria Romana Watamu is a charming Italian restaurant located in Watamu, Kenya. Run by an Italian couple who moved to the area from Rome, this cozy cafe offers authentic pizzas and Italian dishes that are perfectly complemented by a cold Tusker beer. The restaurant is known for its hygienic environment and beautifully decorated interior, creating a delightful dining experience.
Great pizza, great service and a good price.

We had 2 pizza’s here, one with anchovies and one with fish. Both were a bit too thick and dense and both way too salty. Service was good though and the place was clean. The owner (I think) came and started smoking and video-calling right next to our table, which was a bit intrusive. All in all an ok experience, but probably best to keep away from the fishy pizza’s.
Bob — Google review
Italian restaurant. Service was very good and fast, owner keeps serious attention to this which is appreciated. Carpaccio was really delicious, focaccia was awesome as well(they have the real stone oven there). Prawns cocktail was OK, but nothing special, easy meal, prawns are small, carpaccio was much more enjoyable. The tuna main course was good, 3 big chops of the fresh tuna, good and big meal. Pizza was taken to go, and actually it was nothing special, we tried much better in Kenya (other Italian restaurant). It supposed to be the seafood (tuna, shrimps, squid), however it was mostly tuna pieces there.. House wine (Italian) was very good, with a reasonable price. Overall, it is a nice Italian restaurant to spend a time for a quality dinner.

Very bad experience with this place... We had a massive food poisoning from the meal... The atmosphere was OK initially, however there not so much people around, while all the tables were prepared. We order oysters as a starter and we noticed that taste was strange. Oysters were served just on the plate without ice, also there were not separated properly from the shell and we had to scratch them by the regular fork(not special one). Also there were some pieces of broken shells in some oysters... Then we ordered a sea food platter - it was not big, however lobster, squid and fish were grilled well, however prawns were twisted or tortured, no idea why, it looked horrible. Grilled vegetables were not looking well, especially grilled potatoes, like from yesterday... Next day we had a serious problems, my girlfriend was poisoned for 3 days... Most likely the problem was with oysters... I would not recommend this place.

I sip it and immediately notice something is wrong, then immediately the drink suspended itself and made layers in the glass😳😳. I call the waiter and ask him why they served me bad smoothie what if I got food poisoning from it? He says maybe the person who made it might have added lots of ice cubes that's why it's forming a suspension and I clearly tell him NO! You served me bad smoothie. My biryani comes, nice potions but not to my expectations, it comes with no sauces and when I ask, they bring cold soup in a bowl and some pilipili which enhanced the taste alittle. I was hAngry at this point so I just ate and went to wash my hands same direction as the cashier. I notice the waiter that served me and I ask him, "so you knew that the smoothie you served me was bad but you still have it to me?" Tell me why this waiter laughs like any of that was funny?! Remember, after taking back the smoothie, he never comes back to ask if I would like to substitute it with any other drink or if there's anything else I needed! He doesn't offer any apology about the spoilt smoothie but instead laughs about it! I paid my bill and walked out of there a dissatisfied customer who might never go back there because of so many reasons! Who serves their customers bad spoilt food?!! Don't joke with people's health! FOOD POISONING is real and you can be Sued!

Nice place though but the time of food order takes a bit long.So hope they're gonna speed up and change the time effect due to working and rushing hours for clients not to sit long
