The Ruins, also known as Balay ni Tan Juan, is the remains of a grand Italianate mansion that was destroyed during World War II. Built in the late 19th century, it served as the residence of General Juan A. Araneta and holds historical significance related to the struggles during Hispanic colonization and the Negros Revolution of 1898.
I finally got to visit The Ruins in Talisay, Negros Occidental and I have to say, it truly lived up to the hype. This place is more than just a picturesque old mansion; it's a piece of history beautifully preserved and proudly shared with the public. It was closed when went there on a Saturday, it was booked for a wedding event. So, we came back on a Sunday. The moment I stepped into the grounds, I was struck by how elegant and peaceful the place was. The structure itself, though only the skeletal remains of what was once a grand home, still exudes so much character. The architecture, inspired by Italian design, is a testament to how love and legacy can be cast in concrete. What made the experience even better was how well-maintained everything was. The gardens were lush and vibrant, making the place feel alive despite the ruins. The parking is good and the comfort rooms are well maintained, which made the whole visit even more convenient and comfortable. What made it more special for me personally was seeing how happy my wife was to be back again. It brought back memories for her and added a deeper layer of meaning to the visit. It was a beautiful moment we’ll both treasure. Whether you're into history, photography, or just looking for a quiet romantic spot to relax, The Ruins is definitely worth the trip. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause and reflect, a reminder of how love and resilience can stand the test of time. Don’t forget to stay until sunset, but unfortunately we are not able to stay there during sunset. We will definitely go back.

The drive there was very relaxing, with wide plains and minimal traffic. The site offers a spacious parking area and a ticketing lobby where guests line up to get tickets. Even on a weekday, there was still a queue, showing just how popular this destination is. Upon entering, you’re greeted by a beautiful green lawn, the mansion, a fountain, a small monument detailing the history of the place, and a restaurant beside a well. The history behind the mansion is heartwarming, while the story of how it burned down is truly devastating. There aren’t many activities to do here other than simply soaking in the beauty and history of the place—but that alone makes the visit worthwhile.

Spectacular structure. We saw already pictures online but we cannot believe what stands before own very own eyes. We were definitely captivated by this timeless peace; a witness of history. A place to remember ❤️.

It’s one of the few places in Bacolod you could visit and call a tourist spot. There’s not much to see except for the concrete skeleton of a once grand mansion. You can have a lot of photo opportunities if there’s not a lot of people. At high noon, the place could be very humid. Good thing there is a restaurant in the vicinity that gives a wonderful view of the ruins. They offer a limited selection of food and drinks. We tried their shakes to help us cool down. There’s also a gift shop for souvenirs. Place is easily accessible. I was able to book a grab car to and from the area. Must visit when you’re in Bacolod.

The entrance fee is paid in cash. There was sufficient parking when we arrived in the afternoon. The parking area is quite big. We parked near the entrance where you can see the fresh sugar cane juice store right away. There were quite a number of guests so it's hard to get photos without people in the background. There is a free guided tour every 30 minutes. While waiting for the tour to begin again, you can watch the informative video they prepared or check out the gift shop. The tour was short but informative. It was also a very inspiring story. This tourist spot is the last location in our city tour which I think was the best way to end the tour as it was relaxing and chill. The view was beautiful, the food was nothing special but the scenery and live music elevates the experience, and the fresh sugar cane juice on a humid day relieves your stress. This is a great place to watch the sunset. Don't miss the tree growing on top of the abandoned sugar cane tower or torre de azucar and the water fountain when its lighted at night.

A must visit in Negros Occidental. A treasure built by love and faith. We went here in the early afternoon but it still exudes beauty and elegance. They have entrance fees for those who want to visit. Overall, it was a good experience.

This place is very elegant. The structural framework is very beautiful and the place is well maintained. The history behind is also interesting. You can watch a little documentary inside the building. Problem I saw is you can't reach this place via public commute so you may want to take grab or private vehicle.
Axcel C — Google review
The place takes you back in time with its Spanish-era inspired cement frames creating the vibe of classic Italian ambience augmented by its adjacent restaurant - The Piazza. Perfect place to visit when in Bacolod, to relax and unwind, and just simply enjoy the scenery.

It has ample parking space . In 2025, it Hosted the 76th PAL Golf Tournament.

The course needs a lot of maintenance. The tees where like the rough. But the course has a nice layout. The greens were ok. The clubhouse needs a great deal of TLC and the changing rooms replaced. People were very nice and friendly.
Philip G — Google review
I'm not a golfer but a friend took me here a while back after a funeral for lunch. I was very impressed. The food was great and inexpensive, the beer was so cold you have to drink carefully or it will freeze, the view and decor were nice, and the staff was friendly. My only complaint is that one of the time since then, the guard wouldn't let me in because of my flip flops. I was there to grab lunch and was looking forward to a cold beer but what I got was only heartbreak and hunger because of my footwear. I guess it's good to have standards but this country is hot as hell. I've been a few times after the shoe ban and have enjoyed it each time. I'll be back on Thursday in fact.
Vaper T — Google review
The staff weren’t friendly. My partner came to play golf, and I came along to watch as part of his gallery. However, I wasn’t allowed to join him because I was wearing a crop top. This was surprising, as during our last visit, I wore a crop top as well and was allowed to accompany him without any issues. They claimed that a new dress code had just been implemented, but I was completely unaware of it. They insisted that I go back and change, but I explained that our condo rental was quite far, so returning wasn’t an option. Still, they didn’t make any exceptions. The woman I spoke to in the office, who I believe is the head, was not friendly and came across as very strict. I was really hoping she would be a bit more understanding, especially since we had planned to play again. Unfortunately, she wasn’t. Overall, I left very disappointed.

Nice golf area. And there's a sports shop inside Empire sports shop. And a Coffee shop and a restaurant that you can order. I think this golf center it's been around so many many years now.

Par 70 course within the city. Fairway is narrow and straightforward. Cheaper to golf during weekdays. There is a required consumable fee of 300php. No tee houses in between holes. 2025 rates posted

This is my very favorite spot in all Bacolod. A perfect day is to spend 4 to 5 hours here relaxing, eating good food and enjoying a beer after playing 18 holes. The staff is professional and kind and I feel welcomed each time I visit. Recommended to all who want to enjoy a day of fun and good time.

Balay ni Tana Dicang

Balay ni Tana Dicang, also known as the Tana Dikang Lizares Ancestral House, is a well-preserved bahay-na-bato structure located in Talisay City, Negros Occidental. Built in 1883, this ancestral stone house is a representation of the affluent lifestyle of the Haciendas on Negros Island.
In-house tourist guides are good and friendly. I'm very amazed about the history behind this mansion. ✨️

Privately managed 19th century heritage house with progressive additions over the years. Received a heritage house plaque in 2017 from the National Museum as an important cultural site. Ring the doorbell for a guided tour from 10am to 3pm.
Aileen G — Google review
A very nice experience bringing us to the past with the story of how tana dicang runs the household and their hacienda. It was veey amusing to know that in those years women empowerment was already in place, a place where you can feel the rich culture and heritage of our forefathers...

The good: - The house had a lot of interesting stuff - Staff was very helpful and even offered us some snacks - The house is very big, so it doesn't get too crowded Good to know: - Entrance fee was P150 per adult, students and senior citizens had a lower fee - We had no guide, but you could probably ask the staff who went around with you - One of the family's descendants was there (conducting a tile-making workshop), and was very friendly and offered us food
Julian — Google review
This is the oldest and one of the most important houses in Talisay and in Negros Occidental. It definitely a must-see attractions to visitors looking for historical and cultural sites. There's a really small doorbell at the front of the house. There's a P150 fee to enter. The fee helps maintain the upkeep of the house. Photography is allowed, but no video-taking. Victoria, the housekeeper and guide, is very knowledgeable about the house and its history. She also has a very lively personality that makes her storytelling very engaging.
Anthony C — Google review
One of the best re-adaptive use of a heritage structure in the Philippines. The memorabilia and antiques as well as the architecture and details of the house in itself are stunning but the contemporary art gallery downstairs is a breath of fresh air, giving the house a seamless link to the 21st century. Don't leave Negros without visiting this house!

The cathedral's airy interior with chandeliers adds to its charm, and visitors can also explore the Bishops Palace within its grounds. A Cathedral of Grace: San Sebastian Cathedral, Bacolod San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod isn't just a church; it's a vibrant testament to faith, history, and architectural beauty. From the moment you step onto the grounds, you're enveloped in an atmosphere of serenity and awe. The cathedral's imposing structure, a blend of neoclassical and Spanish colonial styles, immediately captivates the eye. The intricate details, from the soaring arches to the meticulously crafted stained-glass windows, speak volumes about the craftsmanship and devotion poured into its creation. Inside, the cathedral's grandeur continues. The high ceilings create a sense of spaciousness, while the soft light filtering through the stained glass bathes the interior in a warm, ethereal glow. We had the chance to visit the San Sebastian Church in Bacolod, and it was truly a beautiful and memorable experience. The architecture is stunning, with its grand design and historical charm that immediately captures your attention the moment you arrive. We visited on a Friday, and we were lucky enough to attend a Holy Mass during our visit. The ambience inside the church was peaceful and solemn, creating the perfect setting for prayer and reflection. The church is well-maintained and radiates a sense of history and faith that both locals and tourists will appreciate. Whether you're religious or simply admire heritage sites, San Sebastian Church is definitely worth a visit when in Bacolod.
Concha, J — Google review
Being a Negrosanon and belonging in the Diocese of Bacolod, I find an affinity with the Sebastian Cathedral, the oldest church in the diocese. Ironically, despite having pursued college in Bacolod and doing countless visits in the capital which is 34 kilometers away from home, I am deprived of the chance to hear a mass in the cathedral. My wife and I started last year (2024) our Stone Churches Tour enabling us to visit 6 stone churches in Iloilo in two trips and 3 stone churches in Negros Occidental / South of Bacolod. Of recent vintage (Holy Week 2025), Belle and I added 5 more stone churches in Iloilo that were included in the itinerary of our visita iglesia on Maundy Thursday. On our way back to Dumangas Port on Good Friday, we did a side trip to Barotac Viejo to add another stone church, this time solely as a heritage tour which is integrated in our visita iglesia. When we arrived in BREDCO port, we opted to walk the distance to the Cathedral where we intend to catch a ride to the Ceres North Terminal. After 25 minutes of walk, we noticed the street in front of the Cathedral crowded by the faithful preparing for the procession. While taking videos and photos of the cathedral, Belle noticed the still short line of the faithful doing the "du-aw" (Good Friday visit) customarily done after the procession. Belle grabbed this opportunity to have our first ever "du-aw" in the Cathedral. On the outside, the San Sebastian which is remarkable for its gray coral stones appear nondescript when compared to delicately carved or elaborate facades of some stone churches in Iloilo (i.e. Miag-ao, Duenas, etc.) or the colored facade (i.e. red sandstone of Guimbal and Dingle and, red bricks of Pavia and Dumangas). However, when Belle and I entered the nave of the Cathedral we were struck by the wonderful job of some renovations and repaint done in the interior. In interior, the Molo Church remains the most elegant while the subdued elegance of Santa Barbara comes second together with a close tie with golden glow of San Sebastian. The ongoing procession on our way out of the church forced Belle and I to walk to a point in Lacson Street where we could find a jeep which is not yet stalled by the procession. Gladly, we found one. It was a relief but not really because we accept the hassle as part of our sacrifice.

We dropped by here as part of our city tour. There is currently an event happening so we could not stay for a long time. There is a guard by the gate and if you want to park inside he will help you. There are a few stalls selling religious memorabilia and candles for offering. These stalls only accept cash.

Located at the center of Bacolod City across the plaza. This church will take you back in time. Beautiful architecture and love the mosaics at the doors. Also the vintage feel of the altar. You should definitely visit this church when you’re at Bacolod City.
Just C — Google review
A church has been at this site since the 19th century. The church has a very impressive baroque facade with symmetric bell towers over an arcade with Romanesque arches. The interiors seems to be influenced by Rococo, albeit without the white plaster sculptures. The high altar is pretty much the most impressive part of the building. A white and gold ciborium shelters the altar table. Behind that, a reredos has a life-size statue of Saint Sebastian in the centre flanked by two angels

Pope John Paul II Tower

4.3
(58)
Pope John Paul II Tower is a significant landmark in Bacolod, dedicated to the revered Pope's 1981 visit. The seven-story tower houses various Papal memorabilia, including his throne and photographs from his visit. Visitors can ascend to the top deck for a stunning view of the Bacolod skyline and the surrounding islands. Located behind SM City Bacolod, this site offers a tribute to Pope John Paul II's historic mass at the Reclamation Area.
Pope John Paul II Tower Bacolod City, Negros Occidental The seven-storey building is dedicated to the late Pope John Paul II who visited this capital city on the 20th of February 1981. It was such a momentous and festive event for the people of Bacolod City that time as they were blessed by his visit. The tower is located in the city’s Reclamation Area or BREDCO (Bacolod Real Estate Development Corporation) area, the site where the late Pope celebrated the Holy Mass in front of a crowd estimated to be almost a million. An eight-foot sculpture of the Pope greets visitors near the gate entrance of the Tower. As stated in the building’s Vision and Mission, “The Pope John Paul II Tower is a pilgrimage center that embodies and perpetuates the ideas, life, advocacies, commitment and holiness of Pope John Paul II – an ardent Promoter of the culture of life and the culture of love.” The tower was borne out of an inspiration few years ago in 2008 by Fr. Felix Pasquin, the rector of the Diocese of Bacolod’s San Sebastian Cathedral, while the diocese was getting itself busy with its Diamond Jubilee preparations that year. He remembered that one of the highlights of the diocese’s history was the Pope’s significant visit in 1981 in BREDCO. The marble marker that was supposed to commemorate the historical visit was lost and so he opened up the idea to Atty. Simplicio Palanca, the President of BREDCO, for the construction of a new marker to coincide with the Diamond Jubilee celebration. The proposal was brought to reality, with Atty. Palanca’s generosity (he financed for the building’s construction) and the approval of Bishop Vicente M. Navarra of the Diocese of Bacolod.

The Pope John Paul II Tower, built to commemorate the Pope's visit to Bacolod, was on my must-see list. I was excited to learn more about this significant event in the city's history. Unfortunately, I found the tower closed during my visit, and its ground floor converted into a reflexology center. The tower's exterior seemed neglected, a stark contrast to the vibrant energy I had expected. It was disheartening to see such a landmark underutilized. While a massage might offer temporary relief for disappointed visitors, it doesn't address the disconnect between the tower's purpose and its current state. I hope the local authorities will reconsider the tower's function and restore it to its former glory. It has the potential to be an important cultural and educational site, teaching visitors about the Pope's visit and its impact on Bacolod. I look forward to returning one day when the tower is open and fulfilling its true potential.

Entrance is 20 PHP for foreigners and 10 PHP for students. Don't expect too much. Views are not spectacular: looking at SM City Mall from above and at Bay Walk. Museum about Pope John Paul II rather a but shabby with faded photos of his life. You can either take the stairs or the elevator.

If you find yourself on the enchanting island of Talisay and craving authentic Japanese cuisine, look no further than Jap-Jap Jo Diner. This charming eatery is conveniently located right off the national highway, making it easy to spot. While the ambiance can get a bit lively due to traffic, it adds to the vibrant dining experience, especially when shared with friends. The menu boasts an array of delectable options that won't break the bank.
The closest we can get to a tasty Japanese cuisine while being stuck in an island that's locked in time. For the food, I give it a 4.5 stars out of 5. Their Maki are especially tasty and the ramen, too. For the venue, it is accessible as they're right beside the national highway of Talisay and is very easy to find. The ambiance of the place can get a bit loud depending on the traffic, however, it still offers quite a lively experience especially with friends.

Perfect authentic ramen. Try their tantanmen special ramen it's so delicious And creamy and aside from it price is so affordable wherein everyone can afford.🍜❤ sushi is also a must try..quality and affordability is their specialty. ❤

Dine at 1130am and maki was not available at the moment. Shrimp tempura was perfectly cooked. Chicken karage meal was a bit dry and salty. Staff were very accommodating.. nothing special on our order..

Their food was deilicous! Nothing beats a good authentic Ramen, at a surprisingly affordable price
Emman P — Google review
Our experience was awful. First, the only beer they serve is SML, but on their menu there's a list of san miguel products. I ordered Maki and Gyoza. They served the gyoza after 20 minutes. And then, I was too excited when I saw the waitress carrying the Maki from the kitchen counter. Surprisingly, she served it to the next table who came in 30 minutes after us. Out of courtsey, I asked to follow up on my order. They never cooked it! This doesn't end here. They only serve water. No soda, tea or juice. You should be half full if you are thinking of dining in. You will die waiting for the food to be served.

Day 2

East side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the east side side of town. Start the day off with The Negros Museum, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Manokan Country Building. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Specialty Museums
The Negros Museum is a modest yet captivating showcase of Negrense cultural and historical exhibits, as well as art and vintage regional toys. One of its highlights is the Balay ni Tan Juan, a historic structure that witnessed the struggles of the people during Hispanic colonization and the events leading to the Negros Revolution of 1898. The museum also features the Silliman University Anthropology Museum, which is dedicated to conserving and presenting the rich cultural legacy of the Philippines.
We recently visited the Negros Museum, and it was such a great experience. The ticket price is very affordable and truly worth it for what you get in return. It’s a perfect place to learn more deeply about the history and culture of Negros, and it gave us the chance to refresh our knowledge in an engaging way. One of the highlights of our visit was the tour guide — very jolly, approachable, and incredibly knowledgeable. They made the whole tour lively and informative, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommended for locals and tourists who want a deeper appreciation of Negros’ rich heritage!

This is a really nice museum with exhibits across two floors. The ground floor is mostly art and there's currently a large exhibition of art by Charlie Co, which takes up most of the space on the 1st floor. The rest of the exhibits on the 1st floor is mainly local textiles. The upper floor cover history with a very brief run from precolonial Filipino society to independence with a special section on the attempt to declare independence dashed by the Treaty of Paris of 1898. There's fewer exhibits than you'd expect for a museum of this size, with the focus being on quality. Well worth the entrance fee.

The Negros Museum is one of the few tourist spots in Bacolod. Entrance is cheap, and you can tour the area without a need for a guide. The museum mostly showcased artworks of local artists, and a few items that show the history of the region. We visited on a weekday morning so it wasn’t too crowded and we were able to enjoy the place mostly to ourselves. The museum is very accessible and close to some popular restaurants. Must-visit if you’re a fan of museums.

We visited the Negros Museum as a large group as part of our family reunion. Our tour guide was great and walked us through each of the upstairs exhibits very thoroughly in English since we had several English-only speakers in the group. It was great to learn more about the history of Negros and its people.

Visiting the Negros Museum in Bacolod City was a fascinating and enriching experience. As someone who appreciates both history and culture, this museum offered a compelling look into the rich heritage of the Negros region. The museum is housed in a beautifully preserved old government building, the architecture itself already sets the tone for the historical journey inside. The collection inside isn’t your typical display of ancient artefacts. Instead, the Negros Museum focuses on social history. The stories of the people, the sugar industry that shaped the region, and the vibrant culture continues to thrive today. I particularly enjoyed the life-size dioramas and vintage photographs that vividly illustrated daily life in the past. Though not very large, the museum is thoughtfully curated and gives a deep and personal glimpse into the lives of Negrenses.

This is a beautiful museum from its exterior and most especially its interior. We were lucky to visit during the exhibit of local artist, Paris Tesoro. The entrance fee is P100. There are attendants on the first floor who are available to give you a tour but you can also easily just enjoy walking around the exhibits and reading the information. The exhibits are interesting and give you a slice of Bacolod's history. The paintings on the top floor are amazing too but our favourite space is the big windows. I highly recommend visiting this museum in your visit here at Bacolod.

We recently visited this museum to learn more about Negros culture and it was a good experience. They have an affordable entrancr fees and accomodating tour guide. Some rooms are non-airconditioned which i think is under maintenance so better to visit the museum in the morning. Overall, a good place for history enthusiast

The Manokan Country Building in Bacolod is a vibrant celebration of street food culture and the art of grilling. It offers a wide array of grilled delights, with its sizzling Chicken Inasal being a highlight. Families can immerse themselves in Bacolod's culinary soul as they explore the variety of flavors in this lively destination. Currently, the new Manokan Country Building is undergoing renovation to enhance the experience for visitors.
Go to Aidas. If you don't mind that it's not air-conditioned and that you may endup smelling like sugba, definitely visit this place . We had inasal chicken and pork barbecue. The Beef Kansi was the BEST.
Aya H — Google review
Still operating as of 1 September 2024 but decided against eating here (went back inside SM to eat inasal instead) because the surroundings gave an unclean impression so much so that even if the food was prepared and cooked very cleanly, I knew I would not enjoy eating it because of the dining facilities. I've also added a photo of the proposed temporary relocation site of Manokan but, as you can see, it's not really a feasible temporary solution since there is no dine-in area.

It's worth noting that the menu varies day to day, ensuring a diverse dining experience. The service staff is friendly, approachable, and always ready to assist. Opting for the beef karubi on a Friday or Saturday lunch is highly recommended.
What a gem! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between upscale and comfortable. We started with the Macaroni appetizer—creamy, fresh, and beautifully plated. For the shabu shabu, i love the mashroom, the grill is very tasty which were melt-in-your-mouth tender and full of flavor. My partner love the dessert and was equally impressed. Don't skip the cookies vanila fudge bar. Conducted by kaene

The food was definitely worth the price! Chef Dranz was also so accommodating. As shabu-shabu beginners, we didn’t know where to start, but he kindly guided us through the process and even made sure we got the freshest cuts of meat. Kudos as well to the rest of the staff. Everyone was friendly and attentive. They really made our first shabu-shabu experience unforgettable!
