Padstow in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Padstow, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Padstow is a picturesque fishing port on Cornwall’s north coast, known for its working harbor, narrow streets, and views over the Camel Estuary. It has become a major foodie destination, especially for fresh seafood and restaurants associated with chef Rick Stein. Visitors can enjoy walks on the South West Coast Path, sandy beaches nearby, and cycling along the traffic-free Camel Trail. Boat trips, from wildlife cruises to short ferry rides across the estuary, add to its appeal as a relaxed seaside base.
With favorites like Cherry Trees Coffee House, The Seafood Restaurant, and Paul Ainsworth at No6, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Padstow Fish & Chips and Ben's Crib Box Cafe so you can get the best taste of Padstow while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Stein's Fish & Chips, located in the heart of Padstow, is a must-visit for seafood lovers. Renowned chef Rick Stein has brought his culinary expertise to this humble dish, ensuring that the fish is fried in beef dripping and accompanied by freshly-cut chips. The menu features a variety of fresh fish and shellfish, including cod, haddock, hake, bream, and lemon sole sourced from local waters.
The haddock and chips were delicious – pure white fish and not greasy at all. The chips were also very nice. I tried my friend’s cod, which was good too. The friendly staff and clean, modern decor made for a pleasant dining experience.

We enjoyed our visit to Stein’s Fish & Chips, the staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. My husband had the Catch of the day and chips which ended up being a cod-like fish - it was very nice and fresh. I had the special - soft shell crab chilli burger and it was very tasty, but a bit scary to look at! (I expected a patty not a whole crab!). The reason for 4/5 stars was it felt more like very good pub fish and chips and not the sea-side slightly greasy fish and chips I was hoping for, but might be personal preference. The unlimited chips was great although my husband and I shared his chips and didn’t want seconds.

Disappointing ! So, this was a treat from my wife and son for my birthday. I fish a lot, both here and abroad, and I cook my catch regularly, so I know what I'm talking about. I'm a big fan of Rick's cookery programmes and books, and cook his recipes at home. So things were set for an enjoyable experience. I was quite underwhelmed ! We had the sampler menu for 2 people. The fish were supposedly hake, lemon sole, pouting and whiting. The only one with any sort of flavour was what they identified as whiting (I think they may have been muddled up as it tasted more like sole). The 3 other fish were very very bland, with any flavour they did have being totally masked by the huge amount of batter. To make matters worse, the batter held onto the oil / beef dripping so much that everything was incredibly greasy. There was barely any fish when compared to the amount of batter. Price - if it had been the best fish and chips of my life I could accept the high price tag . . . . . . but it wasn't. I've had better fresh fish with huge flavour and larger portions at half the price back home in Kent. For somewhere that has good local ingredients from a company that is supposedly renowned for fish cookery, it was very poor. It needs the boss (Rick) to drop in unannounced and do some quality control. And ask himself if he's happy putting his name to the product. I know I wouldn't be ! Save your money, walk round to the harbour and get fish and chips there. Twice the quality and quantity at half the price.

We started our week in Padstow with a trip to Rick Stein’s Fish & Chips. It did not disappoint! We really enjoyed the cod and chips, and had a side of scampi with halloumi. It will always be on our list when in Padstow. Excellent food every time!
Richard W — Google review
Battered cod and chips, fried in beef dripping, matched with tangy tartare sauce, mushy peas, salt and malt vinegar made for one of the best meals of my life. Fabulous service and wonderful ambience make Rick’s well worth a visit when in Cornwall.
Gary B — Google review
I’m Scottish and have eaten fish and chips 🍟 all my life. This was the BEST THING I have ever eaten! First class 👏🏼 Sssh. There are picnic tables hidden around the back of the takeaway store.
Ross M — Google review
A little scarce on the customer service. No small talk but efficient. Lovely fish, light and tasty, batter not too greasy. Chips above average but having been spoilt by some triple cooked chips earlier in the week I would say the chips were better than average!. Pricey....but you know you're going to have to pay for the name so just enjoy!
Tessa A — Google review
We've always come for fish and chips as our treat when we visit Padstow several times a year, but today was indeed the last time. The fish was absolutely appalling, thin, over cooked and beyond dry, the batter was burnt and rock hard. £42 for two portions of cod and chips which went into the bin. Sorry Rick but your fish chef is shockingly bad. After a lovely day in Padstow, it was let down by the poor quality of fish and its cooking.

Located in Padstow, the National Lobster Hatchery is a conservation center that offers tours of its nursery and educational activities. Visitors also have the opportunity to adopt a hatchling. The hatchery plays a crucial role in preserving Cornwall's coastal heritage and supporting local communities through its lobster stock enhancement program. By visiting the hatchery, guests can learn about the importance of protecting lobster populations and contribute to this essential conservation work.
informative and enjoyable, loved seeing the babies. staff were very friendly and had loads of information to share with us about the mums with eggs. they have a cute little gift shop with magnets, toys etc etc. fair price. £8 for an adult and return all year, we are not from the area but visit a couple times a year so to be able to come next time for free is a winner!
Lauren P — Google review
If you're visiting on holiday the £24 family access is quite a lot for what's there. We were done in about 45 min including letting the kids colour and do the word searches etc upstairs. However you can visit as much as you like for 12m so it does offer good value in that respect. My kids enjoyed the activity area and watching the boats so you could return to kill an hour or so fairly often if you were local. The staff were really friendly and knowledgeable and spent ages answering questions, plus the view from the first floor across the estuary is beautiful. You can see a lot of thought has been put into making it more of an attraction. If you can find a place with leaflets for days out, you'll likely find a voucher which definitely makes it better value for money.
Hayley T — Google review
We visited for the first time this half term. It’s rather small but really informative and educational and the volunteers are so passionate and we learnt a lot we didn’t know about lobsters 🦞, definitely recommend as it’s a little gem of a place to learn all about them! We will definitely visit again on our next trip to Cornwall, easily accessible from the parking directly opposite and then we went into padstow for ice cream after
Elizabeth R — Google review
Loved it, very informative, a little shorter than anticipated but not sure how it could be extended. Nice to see what they do, how they help lobsters and a history of how they've done it. I'd recommend it. Not too expensive. (Gutted the gift shop didn't have any pens- I like to collect pens from everywhere I visit)
Craig G — Google review
A surprisingly interesting place. A small but perfectly formed experience. We took the grandchildren and unexpectedly stayed for over two hours. It was fascinating to learn about lobsters and the important work of the Hatchery. Friendly and helpful staff. Great to see the lobsters, especially the baby ones. Informative film too.
Charlotte H — Google review
The hatchery is located in Padstow by the harbourside. It relys totally on funding from visitors to the centre and so I would encourage anyone to go and visit and support this brilliant project. The centre is small but there are lots of tanks with sea creatures to view, lots of very interrelated information about lobsters that I never knew about and upstairs you can watch a very clever film about lobsters and the young ones have an area where they can get active with colouring etc. I visited as part of my Lobster release course with Scuba Ry Divers and I will definitely return. Well worth a visit to support a worthy cause
Julie M — Google review
It's a nice place to look around but in my opinion it's a little pricey. Fair enough once you pay the first time you can go back for free for a year but I don't think that there is enough there for a return journey. It's a good place to bring the kids and they can learn all about lobsters and even see baby ones.

Extremely interesting, fun and informative. So good that I had to go twice! Great for kids and adults alike, friendly staff and a little shop too.

Rick Stein, a renowned chef, opened his flagship restaurant in Padstow in 1975. Overlooking the Camel estuary, the stylish waterside venue offers modern fish and seafood menus. The restaurant boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and a zinc-topped seafood bar, serving top-quality fresh seafood simply cooked. Additionally, Rick Stein's establishment is known for its international reputation for serving the freshest fish and shellfish.
I was not disappointed after waiting a long time to eat here. Living in Australia means I dont get to Cornwall often. Beautiful setting and nice atmosphere friendly, professional staff and wonderful food. Not a huge menu, but delicious and beautifully presented. Lots of tables and not too close, busy but not full on the night i was there. Their take on a Pina Colada was both surprising and delicious.

Nice location for a restaurant. Enjoyed my meal. Wonderful staff. Couldn't be friendlier or more eager to help us. The menu didn't wow me...nothing on it that I hadn't had elsewhere BUT what I did choose was cooked beautifully. The dishes took their time coming out which is always a good sign. All being freshly prepared. I would happily return .

This had been a bucket list location and I was not let down. We stayed two nights eating in the restaurant and met all my expectations and more.Well worth the expense. Service was exceptional and glad to see the service charge was all given to the staff. It is a fish restaurant and the quality of the food was fantastic.Loved every minute of my stay. Stayed in estuary view room which allowed us to have a free parking space as free parking is limited. The breakfast in the morning was the best breakfast i have ever had at any hotel stay

Wow, what an experience that was totally enhanced by the charming Alex who coached a very novice sea food eater. Having never tried oysters, muscles, or crevettes, Alex walked me and my partner through the entire process of enjoying these wonderful, locally caught seafood. My personal thanks go to Alex for making my first taste of these delicacies a memorable one for all the right reasons.

Rick - your chefs are fantastic and we were grateful to being chefs for the day. Well we all are everyday, but the cooking school was fantastic and enhancing. Thank you. Tonight we've enjoyed fish and shell fish soup back in Carbis Bay with a French boule, so we've been truly been spoilt.
Alastair S — Google review
We absolutely loved our takeaway fried fish, but considering how expensive everything was, we were overall a little underwhelmed. The whelks didn't taste fresh (dried edges and incredibly chewy), and the chips were very soggy and bland. We're glad we went for the experience, but wouldn't hurry back.
Carla M — Google review
Visited Rick Stein's in Padstow for the first time over the summer. The lobster thermidor was an absolute standout - rich, creamy, and decadent. Though it sounds like a cliché, you can definitely taste the difference in quality with the produce being locally caught. The tempura soft shell crabs to start were a delight too - perfectly crispy and goes very well with the soy dipping sauce. My only criticism would be the price, a little expensive for what you get, but with excellent service and ambience, Rick Stein's is a great place for a special meal in Padstow.

Had to visit on our current holiday to Cornwall. Been a few years since last visit. Came in the late afternoon, so late lunch so found a pastie shop bought a few bits and the family had a small picnic along the harbour wall. Scenery was amazing fantastic sunny day . Even got a little pub stop done before heading off .can't wait to come back and try new shops and eateries.

Run by a passionate New Zealand native with a family history of cafes in Padstow, this cozy spot offers scrumptious breakfasts and light lunches alongside delectable sweet treats.
We stopped here for breakfast before going on one of the Sea Safari’s and so glad we tried this place! The food was amazing, I had the Harbourside Start which was the perfect size and my partner had the Full Cornish. Everything was cooked perfectly and so tasty. I also couldn’t resist a slice of the chocolate layer cake because it looked amazing and tasted even better! The service was fabulous, everyone was really friendly, it was super quick but not rushed, and there were plenty of staff but all there for a reason and it didn’t feel like too much. We’ll gladly come here again next time we’re in Padstow!

Have to say, the coffee here is some of the best I've had. We had some gorgeous food here and ther service was friendly and quick. Our only let down was that the cake we had after wasn't quite cooked in the middle so we had to leave some of it. We would still recommend it and we would return.
Richard O — Google review
The best cafe in Cornwall! Fabulous service, incredible cakes, great coffee. They even have a takeaway hatch if you're in a hurry as there is usually a wait for a table. The wait, however, is worth it! The photos are from previous years, so any prices will be out of date.

Came with a family of 4 for breakfast on a weekend, lovely cosy place with great food and coffee. This place is clearly the go-to in the village for breakfast/brunch and given the size of the place you should definitely come early for a table. Service was spectacular too and I believe 3 different ladies there checked in on us, all very attentive.

Was really busy and absolutely deserved to be so. Our pasties and cakes were amazing, my toffee popcorn cheesecake a particular treat and the colleagues were really lovely. If there's a queue then wait, it's totally worth it!!

Only real negative is the cafe has only a small seating area. You can put your name on a queue but peak summer this could be a long wait. We were lucky and only had to wait 20mins. Food, service, etc all fantastic.

Padstow Fish & Chips is a casual eatery where you can enjoy classic fish and chips, as well as other delicious options like burgers, sausages, and savory pies. The restaurant serves food quickly without any unnecessary fuss. They offer traditional British fare in a counter service style. Their menu includes freshly cooked fish fillets served with crispy fries made from potatoes, along with tasty accompaniments such as tangy tartar sauce or rich tomato ketchup.
Lovely place to eat right on the harbour with ,gorgeous views.Very busy during the day but later is a quiet time so much better to enjoy your food.

Like dozens of other reviewers who have left their opinions and experiences- Absolutely disgusting, this is what we found underneath our awful fish, even more disgusting food. We visit Cornwall a lot, and these are by far the worst fish and chips we have ever had. Had we opened our package before we got back to our rental cottage I would have taken them back and demanded our money back, they went straight in the bin. I work with Trading Standards and environmental health teams, and I will be making an official complaint about this fish and chips shop. What a complete rip off, they are conning people out of their hard earned money. We will never go here again.
Sarah — Google review
Honestly don’t know what all these poor reviews are talking about, we had a lovely sit down meal overlooking the harbour. Delicious food, beautiful cod and although the chips looked pale, they were actually perfectly crisp and fluffy. Maybe we got lucky but all of us enjoyed our meal.
Callum P — Google review
We had 2 portions of chips to takeaway. They were fairly expensive at £4.50 a portion. Only about a third we’re edible. The rest were tiny pieces most without any potato in them! Both my husband and myself threw more away than we ate. Worst chips we have probably ever had and eat regularly in many different places
Misty — Google review
Two adult fish and chips, a kids fish and chips and sausage and chips was £58 in the restaurant. The chips were fine but the fish was terrible, a really thin piece of cod which had very thick batter which was still raw, made for a very poor tasting and oily, a very disappointing experience. The view of the harbour is nice though. A shame and a waste of money.
John L — Google review
Padstow is such a great city, don’t waste your money at this restaurant!!! The fish and chips are simply bad, but the burgers are an absolute disaster! Lukewarm, dry, and tasting like leftovers from yesterday. Especially the veggie burger is a complete mess – there are so many good alternatives out there, but this patty is by far the worst I’ve ever had. The cherry on top is that you even have to PAY extra for CHEESE on your burger?!?! They desperately need better patties, better buns, and overall a serious upgrade when it comes to the food, especially considering the high prices. The only positive thing: the staff was quite friendly
Jörn N — Google review
Chips are okay. Batter on my haddock as hard, over cooked and flat. Not airy and light. Cod was dripping in oil, made it inedible. Very over priced for the poor quality.

Not just a chip shop. We went in for breakfast overlooking the harbour and had the full Cornish breakfast with a cuppa. It was cooked to perfection. The staff were helpful and friendly, the whole place was clean and there was a nice relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

We came here on a family trip five years ago and our second visit did not disappoint! Customer service exceptional along with the food. We were also impressed with the vegetarian/vegan menu for my husband. He ordered from the vegetarian menu and we also ordered from the à la carte and set lunch menu. The latter is excellent value for three courses and a glass of white wine at £40. I ordered from here the heritage tomato salad with burrata, salmon with warm tartare sauce and blackberry pavlova. Would definitely come here again and recommend to anyone in the area. Thank you for another lovely meal and visit!

Great food and restaurant, we had the 4 course taster and it was delicious. The treacle tart was very sweet though . Only criticism was the high 12.5% service charge that was almost as much as half the main! Else would of left a tip so decided to take it off. Think you should have a choice.

The restaurant itself is beautiful and we received a warm welcome on arrival. The food service wasnt incredible, ive been for a tasting menu at a high end chefs restaurant and the experience wasnt as good as that sadly. The waiters were all friendly and polite but food wasnt explained very well on the menu or specials, no drink pairing was recommended with any of the dishes either. we all had starters and a fruits de mer in the middle of the table which came with dips and sides, it would've been lovely for the waiter on our table to offer us help with how to enjoy this platter and which dips went with which seafood, it would create more of a dining experience as it was some of the tables first time having this dish. For starter i had the sardines which came with a delicious garlic and coarsely chopped green herbs topping which was very tasty. For main i had the steak which was cooked to perfection, cooked medium rare and it just melted in my mouth. The only downside was if this restaurant wants to compete with the top restaurants there needs to be more care when presenting food to the table and the service provided during the meal, our waiter was pleasant enough and interacted with us in general about our evening just not enough about the food presented to us or how to get the most out of our meal. Maybe a taster menu level of service is more what i was expecting than general dining but having heard great things about the restaurant previously maybe we just built it up in our heads too much. I had some lovely mocktails throughout the meal, i cannot consume alcohol due to medicine i take, recommended by Daniel M our waiter which i let him suprise me with and they were excellent, easily the best part of service of the meal were these drinks. For desert i had 3 scoops of ice cream, 2 pistachio and one chocolate, the toasted pistachio biscuit that came with it was a nice touch. The ice cream sadly didnt have much flavour. It was still an enjoyable evening and we had a giggle with Daniel during our meal and he was very friendly and he wasn't the only one serving at our table of presenting our food, And on leaving the restaurant the team were excellent allowing us to take some menus home as gifts. It was just the attention to detail with the menu and service of the food that was slightly lacking for an renowned high end establishment.

Ignore any average reviews … this is the real deal. We enjoyed the 50 year 4 course menu and every selection was fresh and perfect. The service was outstanding thanks to our waiter Daniel. We are hoteliers of 40 years, trust me this is wonderful, and highly recommended.

The seafood was fresh and delicious. We had the "Share by Two" seafood platter, which came with a generous portion. They also offered a special four-course menu to celebrate their 50th anniversary — excellent value and a great way to sample a variety of dishes, all of which were beautifully prepared and tasted great. The only downside was the slightly long wait between courses and a few minor mistakes on our order during the meal. Aside from that, everything else was perfect.

Fantastic food served by wonderful staff in a relaxed atmosphere. My wife and I enjoyed a 4 course Sunday lunch as part of a 2 day package at the hotel. The food was absolutely amazing- fresh, tasty and simply bursting with flavour. The service was exceptional- friendly staff, perfect timing and well presented. Would highly recommend.

an absolutely exquisite dining experience, the freshness of the seafood served here is unparalleled and worth the price. the staff are lovely, welcoming, attentive, and exceptionally skilled at filleting the fish besides your table which was extraordinary to watch. the octopus starter is the softest, freshest, most creamy octopus i’ve ever tasted. i recommend the ‘fruits de mer’ which is a selection of fresh shellfish served on ice - it was absolutely delicious. pair it with rick steins white wine recommendation! the decor in the place is pleasant with a selection of interesting artwork. we will definitely be coming back!

Paul Ainsworth at No.6 What an amazing dining experience from the team at Paul Ainsworth at No.6, starting with cocktails and nibbles at the beautiful CiCi Bar. The dinner was simply outstanding — how this isn’t ⭐️⭐️ is anyone’s guess. It’s pure world-class. We chose the tasting menu, which on this visit was very fish and shellfish-led — we were in heaven! There’s now also the option of a two- or three-course à la carte menu if you prefer. Every dish was flawless, from the soup and scones right through to the desserts — my photos don’t even do it justice. Service was attentive without being stuffy; the team were friendly, enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about what they do. I’ve been lucky enough to dine at No.6 three or four times now, and it just keeps getting better. This was simply an unforgettable experience.

We had the most incredible evening at Paul Ainsworth at No.6 in Padstow. The food was outstanding—creative, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. Every course was a highlight. A huge thank you to the team for the thoughtful birthday touches, which made the celebration feel extra special. The sommelier’s wine knowledge was exceptional, with perfect pairings that enhanced every dish. Service was warm, attentive, and genuinely caring from start to finish. A memorable experience in every way—we can’t wait to return.

We went for experience one (on the menu), and what an experience it was! We went for Anniversary, and I must say it did not disappoint. Everything was perfect - the attention to detail, the service and most importantly the delicious food. Thanks for an amazing experience in itself, dining with you! Hard to see how we top this next year 😅.

Paul Ainsworth’s flagship restaurant, No. 6, is a truly exceptional dining experience. From the moment you walk in you are cared for. The staff are professional with the right touch or casual so it doesn’t feel stuffy. The food is some of the best I’ve had. The dishes are unique, thought out, beautiful, and bloody delicious. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. One of the few truly exceptional meals I’ve ever had.

This was an excellent meal and I feel it is one of the best one-star restaurants in the country - a few of the courses felt like they would be at home in a top two-star restaurant! The opening course with the pea soup and cheddar scone is fabulous and they serve the best butter I have ever tasted to go alongside it. The turbot dish is also particularly good and the pastry section is something else - the Valhrona chocolate dessert is one of the best I have had. The wine and hospitality was very good as well; Oli and Loren looked after me and they did an amazing job and their enthusiasm was palpable. I highly recommend eating here.

A fantastic meal in a restaurant that 100% deserves its Michelin star. From the amuse bouche to the petit four, everything was a wonder of depth of flavour and texture. Elliot who served us a number of dishes was the epitome of professionalism and friendliness. Highly recommended for a special meal.
