The Exploratorium is an electrifying science museum located along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. It features over 600 interactive exhibits that allow visitors to experience scientific wonders such as touching a tornado and capturing images of their own shadow. The museum offers themed adults-only nighttime parties with cocktail bars, providing a unique and educational nightlife experience. Additionally, visitors can enjoy After Dark access to all 650 interactive exhibits.
I had such a fun time at the Exploratorium! It’s not your typical museum — everything is hands-on and really makes you think (and play). I enjoyed exploring the many interactive exhibits and learning new things in a playful way. The views from the Bay Observatory Terrace are also a nice bonus. It’s a great spot to explore whether you’re on your own, with friends, or family. The entry price feels fair considering how much there is to see and do. Definitely one of my favorite spots in SF for a day of curiosity and fun!

If you are a science geek like me, you will love this place! The inside and outside of this place has a plethora of interactive exhibits for all ages. The hands on stations will stimulate your senses and expand your mind. A great place to learn about science, the environment, and engineering. I enjoyed all aspects of this learning place and walked out with an enlightened big smile.

We came on a Sunday afternoon. Great and fun place for children and adults. So many activities everywhere you look. Family Vibes. Live shows. Cafes. Staff available to help. Outside exhibits. Rooftop exhibit. Always recommend to others. Spend about 4 hours there but could do 5 to see more exhibits.

Very great experience since the new location has been set in 2013. Last experience was at the old location in 2007 and alot has changed. New level of floors with a great restaurant that had fast and great service. New experience on the A.I. section and also the biology and insect area was very interesting. They still have some old optical illusion rooms and its still a blast to experience every single one of 'em.

So many fun experiences to be had here. It could be pretty fun for toddlers and older Children alike ….we toured with a not quite two-year-old and he did have fun. Younger than that I think might not work.

This place is great to have fun with children, I loved it myself. The bad part is the price, is kind of made for you to get the annual membership, because the one time entrance is as expensive as the membership.

So many fun, interactive and hands-on activities! My son turned into a happy little scientist for hours. A fantastic place to spark curiosity, great for both kids and adults, definitely worth visiting a few times a year.

A very educational Museum with lots of information on the fantastic little cable cars you can get throughout San Francisco. Highly recommend you ride the Cable Cars while you're here, they're incredible fun, and a good way to see the sights too. We paid $35 on the MUNI app for unlimited rides on both Buses and Cable Cars. If you ride the Cars and are then interested in learning how they work, then visiting this FREE museum is a must!

💚 Fans infrastructure or public transportation history will be in heaven at this museum. 💚 Visitors are able to fully view the mechanics, in operation, powering the cable car lines throughout the city. 💚 The museum is full of displays and historic photos. Many with the sole purpose of explaining how the cable cars operate. 💚 Great gift shop! 💚 FREE admission!

If you hate interesting in learning first hand how the cable cars work or are in the area, the visit is worth the time. The entrance is free and the museum provides easy to understand information regarding the operation of cable cars of San Francisco. There is a nice souvenir shop in the museum too.

Great layout, free admission, neat to see how it all works. Good little gift shop, but they only took cash and we had to put back dome of the items we wanted to buy because we didn't have enough money on us.

East Bay Vivarium

Reptile store
Pet supply store
East Bay Vivarium is a specialty pet store in the Bay Area that specializes in exotic reptiles, lizards, frogs, and turtles. The store offers a wide variety of animals housed in large tanks, including impressive specimens like Lemondrop, a 15-foot albino reticulated python. Customers can enjoy browsing the diverse selection of reptiles and even have the opportunity to handle some of the snakes.
The East Bay Vivarium is one of the largest Reptile pet shops in the United States. The number of animals that they have is large, but several years ago they used to have a lot more. It’s still a great place to go to look around and see what they have, and to get advice from the people who work there, most of whom have a lot of reptile experience. Their prices on feeders are good and they have both live and frozen. They also carry a decent selection of amphibians, and a few vertebrates. If you’re looking for a used cage, they often have several of them for sale at very reasonable prices.
Steve T — Google review
This place was a great collection of reptiles. It was interesting to watch a python eat a rabbit. The store could use some updating, but otherwise it was a cool experience.
Steven C — Google review
This place is so awesome. I board my tortoise here when I go out of town. They’re always available and ready to take great care of him. Their animals are so healthy and well cared for. I bought my tortoise here a few years ago and they told me exactly what he needs to keep him healthy and happy. They’re always happy to see him and comment on how healthy he is. I love this place so much!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Exceptional Service and Care - Ian Goes Above and Beyond! I recently had my snake shipped from Berkeley to St. Louis, and the service I received from Ian at Berkeley Vivarium was absolutely outstanding. From start to finish, Ian demonstrated a level of care and professionalism that exceeded all my expectations. The attention to detail in packaging my snake was meticulous - I could tell Ian truly understands how to ensure safe transport for these delicate animals. What impressed me most was his proactive communication throughout the entire process. He kept me informed every step of the way about timing and logistics. Ian's dedication to my snake's wellbeing was evident when he made the difficult decision to delay shipping twice - once due to excessive heat and again because of potential Fourth of July travel delays. This kind of thoughtful consideration shows he prioritizes animal welfare over quick transactions. The daily updates and clear communication made what could have been a stressful experience completely manageable. Ian's expertise and genuine care for the animals is remarkable. If I could give ten stars, I would! Thank you Ian, and thank you Berkeley Vivarium for employing someone who truly cares about what they do. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this business to any reptile enthusiast.

This is a quality shop! They offer a plethora of knowledge! One of the staff was giving a new owner of a snake invaluable information on husbandry, and being frank about it which honestly is needed in this field is needed (but done politely). All in all i would give a 5 star if the prices of some of the specimens were not as expensive (i understand they're p&l in this industry is tight at times). Honestly a 4.9 does them well. Do not hesitate to shop here !

We’ve purchased 3 tarantulas over the past 10 years. Typically Michael helps us & he has a wealth of knowledge. We’ve been to the store many times in between purchases, and each time staff have been friendly, well-informed, and they take time to answer questions & educate. Animals are relaxed, with good weight, and healthy appearance. Habitats are always clean with appropriate items in habitats. Truly a well-run business and educational center. Highly recommend.

State park
Nature & Parks
McLaughlin Eastshore State Seashore is a scenic coastal refuge located in Berkeley, offering panoramic views of the Bay. The area features tidal marshes, beaches, and trails that are perfect for bird-watching and observing small animals like squirrels. Away from the urban districts of Berkeley, it provides a relaxing escape with its stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Visitors can enjoy beachcombing along the shoreline and may even catch live music performances at certain times.
Loved the trail. Pretty quiet on Saturday. Moved to the next parking spot near seabreeze. Clean and enjoyable with water. Picnic friendly.

That's a nice place to chill with friends for 🅿️ free parking, but their restrooms didn't open when I went on weekdays. Also, it's kind of windy there, but I could see the view of San Francisco, and a lot of people go sailing on the ocean.
Daniela S — Google review
Great views of both the Bay and Golden gate bridge on a clear day! There are some homeless folks every once and awhile but they are harmless. Nice spot to go for a run along the water or to fly a kite. Also a dog park near.

This park is good for strolling, 🐦 observation and views. It does not really have a beach, but the meadow restoration has made it good for birdwatching, and it has flat terrain so that it's an easy hike. I found the scenery beautiful, and saw some good birds while I was there, and some water birds. It was a pleasant experience.

With as populated as the Bay Area is, it can be more challenging than some might think to get a taste of nature without leaving the city. This takes me the Emeryville/Berkeley area where I had the opportunity in visiting "McLaughlin Eastshore State Park". There is no actual street address here but it is where University Ave. & W. Frontage Rd. meet. It is also about 1/2 mile from I-80 so it is quite easy to get to when traveling my car. I had come here during the evening of Saturday 6/23/2022 at around 7:45pm. The weather was a comfortable 64°F while being crystal clear with no clouds in sight as well as no Bay Area fog for that matter. What makes this state park convenient is that they offer a sizable parking lot (which is free of charge) as well as several trash bins and a few porta potties within a mere 50 yards from the bay water and trails. The hours of operation are from 5am to 10pm seven days a week. Since this is a protected open space preserve area, the park actually extends 8.5 miles along the East Bay shoreline from the Bay Bridge to Richmond, This includes tidelands along the waterfronts of Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, Albany, and Richmond. Since I-80 is a very heavily traveled highway, you can witness joggers, cyclists, and walkers exercising from a distance if you look close enough. Since I arrive right before dusk to check out the sunset, I luckily parked a stones throw from the water, rocks, and sandy beach area. Since this area stretches a very long distance, it never seems super crowded as opposed to a way more densely popular park or bike trail. And if you arrive during the time I did, you can witness some of the most awesome sunsets in all of the Bay Area. With the good things about this park, you also need to consider the not-so good things as well. On any given day, you will spot quite a few homeless people (in tents, sitting in cars, and even just sleeping on the streets). It is the grim reality of many that hit hard times. But for the most part, many people here are courteous and keep to themselves. I felt safe during my visit and was able to soak in some of that fresh bay air while enjoying a perfect sunset. With that said and done, I am going to give "McLaughlin Eastshore State Park" an above average four-star rating.
Donovan H — Google review
A beautiful Bayside location with a view of all 3 bridges. Clean, safe, and with friendly squirrels who will take food from your hand! 💕🐿

Besides there being a lot of traffic right next to the path this is such a nice walk. Little beaches to pop down into. Beautiful views of the Bay, parking at different spots up and down the path. Not great for off leash walks with your dog, in my opinion.

Cesar Chavez Park, situated within the Berkeley Marina, spans 90 acres and offers breathtaking views of the bay area. The park features wheelchair-accessible hiking trails, an undeveloped wildlife sanctuary, and a range of recreational activities such as off-leash dog areas, picnic spots, and BBQ areas. Visitors can also enjoy kite flying in the park's high winds or take part in various water sports at the nearby marina.
Absolutely one of the Crown Jewels of the bay - almost literally. Climb over sweeping hills to see the water of the bay unfurl around you, with the city and the GG bridge in the distance. I go here for my dog - I believe it is the largest open leash acreage in the Bay Area. Yes, perhaps it used it be a dump. It’s now lovely, and feels so freeing to tromp through. Great dogs go here, I never worry about who we’ll encounter. The wind can be very strong, so bring a windbreaker. The other perk, of course, are the kite flyers.

If you need to breathe fresh air this is the place, Wind almost always, so take your jacket and enjoy, the place is peaceful and beautiful, close to the end in the scenic view almost always have 2...3 snakes, but they are friendly if you don't disturb or try something not smart, stay at least 3...5 feet away

Absolutely beautiful spot with incredible views of the San Francisco skyline. Just a short drive from the city, but it feels like a peaceful escape into nature. Wide open trails, fresh ocean air, and plenty of space to relax or walk. Perfect for a quiet hike, a scenic picnic, or just clearing your mind. Highly recommend for anyone looking to recharge and enjoy some of the best views the Bay Area has to offer.

A lot of parking spots. 99% of times is windy, it's better to bring extra layer when visiting. People walk their dogs over the place and hills. Views are amazing. No playground for kids. There are mobile restrooms around. Also picnic tables locate around the park as well.

Breakfast restaurant
Oceanview Diner, located in Berkeley, is a beloved neighborhood spot known for its delicious breakfast offerings. The diner serves up classic breakfast dishes with a unique twist, such as their popular soufflé pancakes available in flavors like banana rum and strawberry. After undergoing an ownership change and becoming a worker-owned business, the diner has continued to thrive and is cherished by locals and visitors alike.
It was a great experience all around! The staff was super nice and welcoming, we went with our dog and they even gave him a treat. They've got a good variety of options and we were all pretty satisfied. Would recommend the potato pancakes and the chicken sandwich with pepper (the bread was so fresh it was still warm!!) Plus the drinks were pretty big
Maria E — Google review
Went in on a Saturday for brunch with friends. They were very busy and did not take reservations. We sat after our full party had arrived. It was my first time here and I felt it was just okay. They didn't have a lot of options on the menu. I ordered the bagel plate and shared it with a friend who ordered the potato cakes. The bagel was good ( hard to mess up a bagel!) but the potatoes were bland. We also stopped at the bakery attached to the restaurant. I got cookies and brownies for the family. We all had the same opinions of very dry and not good for the pastries.
Naomi A — Google review
When Bette's announced that they were closing we were crestfallen.....and then Bette's announced that its staff would be opening again as The Oceanview and we were relieved. The food here is solid if a little overpriced. But that's fine: it's worth it and the clientele in the area can support the place longterm. I mean, Bette's was Bette's for _decades_ and you don't remain if your food isn't up to par. Especially on 4th street. The service can be a little slow but it's understandable; I've never seen them underwhelmed. The menu is generous and Darryl treats each dish like he invented it. Which might actually be the case, but no matter. We've never been disappointed. Just _go_.

New to Oakland and this is the only place I’ve eaten twice in the two weeks. The best pancakes I’ve ever eaten, both times. It’s hard to describe how fluffy these are. Staff super friendly. Coffee constantly filled. Real syrup. I don’t want to eat breakfast anywhere else.

Great location in the middle of a great little part of Berkeley. Old diner vibes with good food to match. It met expectations and was definitely a place that I would try again. The salmon hash was great and the biscuit. Oh the biscuit. Somehow the biscuit stayed nice and hot throughout our time there.

Haven't been here in years, and was not disappointed. Just as good as I recalled, or better. Yummy eggs, oh, so! soft, just perfect! Delicious latte. Friendly folks all around. Not cheap, but well worth it. No one should start the day with a disappointing breakfast!

Bar
Nestled in the vibrant Fourth Street shopping district, Iyasare offers a delightful culinary journey through inventive dishes inspired by northeast Japan. This modern eatery, led by executive chef Shotaro Kamio, showcases Tohoku's rich flavors with shareable plates like bacon mochi and ocean umami. The tempura selection is particularly noteworthy, featuring crispy delicacies such as cumuli delicata and togarashi brussels sprouts that are sure to satisfy your cravings.
Enjoy the food here! I’m not a big fan of Ramen, but the one I had was so good. The Empire was also very tasty. We asked them to add prawns in it. The server was very nice and the aura was calm. I believe it was Michelin star rated a few years ago.
Katrina M — Google review
Great service and nice ambience. Food was pretty good! Very fresh, but perhaps could use some more attention to detail. Wasabi was not hand ground. Soy sauce was rather generic. Tempura was over-fried. Scallops were also a bit over done. Wagyu skewers were perfect though! Quality of sashimi was also very good. Overall not a bad choice for Japanese in this area.
Jay S — Google review
Solid 5! Delicious food. Great service. Lovely decor. We shared a salad and tempura for lunch and both items were delicious with wonderful flavors. They have a large bar selection and personable staff. Reservations recommended. It was a bit loud indoors.
Bay W — Google review
Iyasare has been my gastronomical 'happy place' on Fourth Street in Berkeley for years now. The staff embody authentic hospitality from the moment you arrive. When it comes to consummate customer service, elevated and artful Japanese food and specialty cocktails, Iyasare are at the top of their game!
Anya S — Google review
The vegetable tempura was inedible. The waitress suggested it. Maybe because it was a to go order. First time I’ve been this disappointed. Whatever oil they used seemed off and/or left in too long. Soggy. It was over salty and could barely see a veggie. Mostly batter. 🙁. This tempura looks nothing like the picture on website which is filled with of veggies! Hoping for a better meal next time to go or it in restaurant.
Franny F — Google review
I absolutely LOVE this place! It's a place I meet with my mother a few times a year as she also loves this place. The food has always been amazing. Some items do change but there are staple items that remain in the menu that I order each time I visit. It may sound simple but I do love these miso Cesar salad. I also love and have to get the Kakiage Tempura with black tiger shrimp. This is a must get item. Get it without the shrimp if you cannot eat shellfish, it is still amazing. It comes with togarashi, seaweed and match to flavor it up more if wanted. The poppo yaki is another item I always order. The marinated squid is tender and delicious! Another item I like that is very simple but tasty is the agadashi tofu. From there many other items get ordered. Ikura rolls, uni, and tuna belly. They offer different ramen bowls and each is flavorful and filling. The Suzuki yaki (sea bass) is very moist. My wife tends to get the donburi bowls which are beautifully out together and fresh seafood. I usually end the meal with an order of the unagi but the desert change and are also delicious. This is a must visit restaurant. It is pricey but the quality and service is worth it. The atmosphere is vibrant and ambiance is electric. They offer bar seating, indoor and outdoor seating. Reservations are needed.

A little pricey for what it was tbh. But the standout dish was the bacon wrapped mochi. Id go back for that. The sashimi was pretty good, and tempura super crispy. The vegan pavlova was not bad. The food is overall quite good.

Restaurant
The Berkeley Boathouse is a nautical-themed waterfront venue located at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton Berkeley Marina. It offers stunning views of the San Francisco skyline on the East Bay side, making it an ideal spot to enjoy California cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients. The menu features a variety of dishes, from Boathouse Benedict to Korean glazed chicken wings and Wagyu burgers.
Dined here while staying at the adjoining hotel. The location and ambiance are spectacular. Great view of the marina from any table in the restaurant, as well as a large outdoor patio. They also have a nice bar area that would be great for socializing. A strange thing happened with our server, who had a spell of dizziness and lost her balance. She said she thought it was because she’s diabetic and had eaten candy. She seemed a little dazed for the whole service. The food was excellent. We had asked for the driver scallops on the side, with the fettuccini Alfredo. We were surprised by the serving size of this pasta dish. The flatbread was nice but probably unremarkable. And the beet salad was excellent.

When you stay at the Iconic DoubleTree by Hilton Berkeley Marina, you'll be on the waterfront enyoing stunning views of the San Francisco skyline while dining at The Berkeley Boathouse Restaurant. Breakfast, lunch, coctels and dinner is served in a lovely ambience, the blue chiminea inside and the right choice of music. The food is taste, exotic and there's a great variaty. Service is excelente, and very friendly happy people work there. Also is amazing to see the sun setting on the Golden Gate, just steps away from the Cesar Chavez Park where you can take peacefull walks, and actually come across a habitat for The Western Burrowing Owls, one of the most endearing and beloved of bird species.

The Berkeley Boathouse is one of the Bay Areas hidden gems. Beautiful atmosphere. Wonderful staff. Customer service was a 10 out of 10. Short wait time for seating. Everything we ordered, including the drinks, came out in a timely manner and tasted great.

We enjoyed all our food and drinks. Service was absolutely spectacular!!! Roger and the staff were so kind, genuine, and prompt. Definitely plan on coming here again, anyone in Berkeley should stop by!

I had the Christmas eve dinner. There was no wine pairing, but the lamb chops were tender and juicy. I had a flight with my dinner of which the pour is very generous. They also made me a special apple cider cocktail.
Heather T — Google review
I really like this place, but the service is a little slow sometimes. My biggest pet peeve is that they don't clean the lounging chairs by the fireplace very well. Last night, one of them was missing and screw! Come on, now...the views are beautiful, and it's such a cozy, quiet place - there's no reason not to be on top of this. $300 worth of steam cleaning and hardware would go a long way.

Good restaurant connected to the Double Tree Hotel. The service was awesome, the decor felt a little worn down. Overall not a bad experience.

Nature & Parks
Tilden Regional Park, spanning over 2,000 acres, is a picturesque natural retreat nestled between the Berkeley Hills and the San Pablo Ridge. The park offers an array of recreational activities including hiking and biking along its extensive trail network, a visit to the Regional Parks Botanic Garden showcasing California native plants, and swimming at Lake Anza during late spring and summer.
Great place to hike, picnic, and swim. There is $5 charge for using the beach. You can hole around the lake. Parking is free.
Ravi R — Google review
Tilden Regional Park is one of my favorite places in the Bay Area and a park that never feels the same twice. Tucked into the Berkeley Hills, it is a world of its own with forests, meadows, lakes, ridges, and open spaces that make you forget you are so close to the city. Every visit feels like a new adventure, whether I am walking quiet trails under the trees, looking out at sweeping views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, or spending the day around the lakes and picnic areas with family and friends. One of the highlights for me is Lake Anza. The trail around the lake is peaceful, and on warm days people swim at the small beach or set up picnics nearby. The Tilden Merry-Go-Round is another classic, a beautiful carousel from the early 1900s that still brings joy to kids and adults alike. The Little Farm is also special, with goats, cows, chickens, and pigs that you can visit and even feed. Families love it, and it adds to the park’s charm and variety. The Botanic Garden is another gem, showcasing native California plants in a way that feels like a walk across the whole state. Beyond that, the park has golf courses, campgrounds, BBQ and picnic areas, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. It is a place with something for everyone, no matter what kind of day you want to have. For me, Tilden is more than just a park. It is a place to recharge, to connect with nature, and to make memories. Whether I am hiking the ridge trails, feeding the animals at the Little Farm, or just sitting by Lake Anza watching the light on the water, Tilden always leaves me feeling grounded and grateful. It is one of the true treasures of the Bay Area and a place I will always return to.
Siare K — Google review
It's a beautiful experience. Today it was raining so the trail was muddy. I crossed the bridge but turned back toward the parking area after viewing the lake.
Jamie F — Google review
A magical place to visit. From the trails and wooden bridges near the Little Farm, the Little Farm itself, the Visitor Center that gives you a rundown of all wildlife and history of the nearby area, while also having activities for little ones on specific days! My favorite are the trails around Lake Anza personally. You can sit and just truly appreciate the beauty of the entire area on a nearby bench and just take life in. My fiancée abd I ended up coming here to when we had to process the passing of a loved one, which was one of the most difficult times on our lives, and i beleive being in nature truly helped us grieve and let out all that we had been holding in. Its a very peaceful place. Whenever I have a stressful week, I find myself coming here to unwind and relax. You can book a site for parties here as well which is really fun to do too if you're planning a birthday or baby shower or something and want to BBQ. This will always be one of my favorite spots in the East Bay.

What a fantastic outdoor space, a little oasis right near the city. Saw a bunch of critters, large and small. Met the king of the forest, some surly squirrels, two cows, a couple of very sleepy pigs, and the ambassador of Pack Rat Trail. We’re soooo lucky to have these outdoor spaces so closeby! Great place for kids to learn about animals and a cool network of beginner friendly trails with a variety of flora. Remember to respect the wildlife while we visit their homes.

Nature & Parks
Indian Rock Park, located in the Northbrae area of Berkeley, is a renowned rock park offering stunning views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The park features climbing areas suitable for beginners and offers a glimpse into its historical significance as a training ground for environmentalist David Brower during World War II. The titular rock dominates the landscape, providing easily accessible scenic views and serving as a popular spot for sunset viewing.
A wonderful spot to hang out in I came here several times both with friends and alone. There are some climbers around trying their best to climb the back of the rock while most normal people climb the front to get an awesome view of the bay area. People are friendly and start up conversations with you. The sunset here is amazing.
Horace G — Google review
If you can hike up the big rock, you can get some overlooking views of Berkeley and farther if the sky is clear. The climb is doable without using your hands but not recomended for someone that does not have steady ballance. Some paths on the rock have irregular steps carved into it but they are not 100% of the path. Sometimes people bring their dog up the rock and I've seen a mix that were on and off leash. Nice place to reflect on your thoughts or get a view above the trees if you don't mind potentially some kids playing on the rock too.
Christian C — Google review
Climb up the rocks and you’re rewarded with one of the best panoramic views of the Bay. Golden Gate Bridge, SF skyline, and the hills all in one shot. A perfect spot for sunset, a quick climb, or just catching your breath above the city. Small park, huge payoff.

Vinh T — Google review
I went to boulder here with some friends and we all loved the place. Super unique location in a neighborhood and it offers amazing views of the bay and SF. If you are climbing, don’t forget to visit Mortar park down the road which is more shady with trees.
Brighten ( — Google review
Good boulders, good vibes Probably the easiest approach I've ever had to get to real rocks. I think the grades are slightly soft or maybe I got stronger? I visited on a Sunday with beautiful weather and the place was packed -- which means more crash pads and more pep squad, but may be lacking some of the peaceful wilderness that some may be looking for when outdoor climbing. No idea where restrooms are
Emily Z — Google review
What a gem! Super cool area tucked into a residential area. We visited close to sunset on a Sunday and the top of the rock was speckled with small groups enjoying the view. And what a view! Perfect view of the SF skyline and the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges. There are steps carved most of the way up and down and lots of folks climbing and scrambling everywhere else. Great for all ages!
Anne W — Google review
Beautiful and amazing. ❤️ Please be careful when going up the rock steps but when you get to the top it is breathtaking to see Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, the famous SF bridge, so much all in one place. Up there I was totally high on life feeling hopeful and grateful, grounded in the present and looking to the future. Please check it out and for the sake of this beautiful rock if you see any trash or garbage pick it up and toss in the near by bins. I had a chance to do that and immediately felt a connection with this special rock and Mother Earth. Together we can 💪❤️💪

The Berkeley Rose Garden, established in 1933 as a Civil Works Administration project, is renowned for its vast collection of rose bushes and its unique terraced amphitheater layout made of natural stone. Nestled within a canyon, the garden offers breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. This picturesque setting makes it a popular choice for outdoor weddings and events due to its serene beauty.
All roses in bloom, no dogs allowed inside rose garden, but plenty of walkways, trails, picnic areas/tables, seating areas to sit with your dogs and have a lunch. There is also a tunnel that crosses the road that leads to another park where you can walk with your dog... Clean public bathrooms.

What a gorgeous assembly of beautiful blooms! I have been visiting this garden for over a decade and it delights me every time. The well-tended plants are so healthy, radiantly so. There are benches for sitting and gazing into the sea of flowers, and walkable pathways throughout the garden. The views are stunning and photo opportunities abound. The garden is accessible to the public via gates near the tennis courts; street parking nearby is available—just ensure you check the signage. :)

Amphitheater
Concerts & Shows
Concert hall
Nestled within the scenic campus of UC Berkeley, the Greek Theatre, officially known as the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre, is a stunning outdoor amphitheater that has been captivating audiences since its inception in 1903. With a capacity of 8,500 seats, this iconic venue hosts an eclectic mix of events ranging from concerts featuring renowned pop and rock artists to cultural festivals like The Berkeley Jazz Festival.
By far my favorite venue to check out. No bad seat. The views, the sound, and the amazing weather just so perfect. Love the Mumford show - have seen them a half dozen of times and this one by far was the best. Clean and friendly staff. Parked at a local hotel and walked through the city. It was it wasn’t a bad walk. So many places the eat or to grab a drink.
Danny D — Google review
Incredible venue -- feels small but isn't. The acoustics were perfect for an amphitheater. Also, easy to grab a nice dinner then walk to the show from one of Berkeley's great restaurants.
Steve H — Google review
What a venue! Recently saw Modest Mouse & The Flaming Lips here and didn’t know what to expect with the venue since it was my first time. It is stellar! The weather, the views (of the stage and the surroundings) - it was magical. They also empty water bottles you can refill yourself and you can bring a small backpack with light food items. You can also bring seat pads and blankets. Check their FAQs for all the details. A ‘must go’ venue for sure.
Drew M — Google review
This venue is one-of-a-kind as you feel like you’re basically in Europe. “The Greek” is absolutely an achitectural gem. While it rained most of the time I was there, witnessing an incredible sunset for a minute just made me smile. Good acoustics for a music concert. Really had a great time here.
E L — Google review
The Greek is a great venue, maybe my favorite in the whole Bay Area. It’s very well maintained and managed by tons of friendly staffers. The sound is amazing from anywhere. There are great food and drinks options where the lines never get too long. I would recommend bringing form seating pads for the concrete seats and/or blankets if you’re up in the lawn section. It can get chilly after the sun goes down, so bring layers.
Josh L — Google review
Beautiful venue. Amazing view. Clean and easy to get around. Saw Counting Crows there last week and Atmosphere a few years ago. Both amazing. One of my favorite places to see a show.
Michean C — Google review
GREAT VENUE!!! You can't beat the view we had even with cheap general admission grass section tickets... which is tiered so it's not just a grassy sloping hillside. Billy Idol rocked the Greek Theater's roof off of this open-air venue. And the opening act Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are always fun! The food was rather good compared to a lot of similar venues... I had a tasty beef brisket sandwich and my wife had a beef hotdog on a brioche bun, along with tater tots and jalapeno cheese nachos. The tasty local beer was ice cold for me and a perfect Margarita for her. Though she's not a "rocker" type like me, she really enjoyed the music that took her back to her teenage years! What a great time... highly recommend this venue! Traffic getting in and out was a little nuts so plan for that..... maybe go ahead of time and grab some food to eat in Berkeley... in our case we carpooled with friends so timing did not allow for the extra curricular fun. If it wasn't a Sunday night, we likely would have stuck around in the area and took advantage of what Berkeley's got to offer!
Laszlo L — Google review
A freaking GREAT concert venue!! They have all types of bands and musicians. It has gorgeous architecture in the Berkeley Hills. Right there at the top of Hearst street on the University of. California campus. From the Greek you can see the Campanile Clock Tower and incredible sunsets over the trees. General seating is at the upper level on the grass. First come, first serve reserving a spot. It’s at an angle which can get sort of uncomfortable over the course of the show. And of course your blankets will get stepped on as people dance and walk around. I don’t think they allow lawn chairs. Mid level are big step. BRING A SEAT CUSHION or your butt will hate you. But it’s totally cool looking. The way the seats curve in a semi circle around the arena. And of course people in front of you want to lay back after awhile so that’s a little weird. Haven’t sat here in a while but I think these are reserved seats. Lowest level is called pit level. The absolute best area IMO. Plastic folding chairs are reserved seating. It is kind of right shoulder to shoulder but so what. It’s a party down there! You’re pretty dang close and can see everything really well. I personally like 8 rows back or your neck will suffer. Music can be loud down there. Lots of restrooms. Lots of food and drink huts. And even at least one water refilling station. Entry and exit are a breeze. My only gripe is the merch area is too small. I know all the good places to park around here. Or use a garage but getting out afterwards is a hassle. Several hot dog cart vendors after most shows. Looking forward to my next concert here!

Ajanta is a fantastic Indian restaurant with delicious food and attentive service. The owner takes pride in the history of the hotel and it's been around for 30 years, so you know it's going to be good. Come here often and you're guaranteed to enjoy your experience!
Came here with my friend for lunch. The lunch special is an amazing value and the portions were huge! The owner was very attentive and taught me something new about how to enjoy the food with the sides. Great music and quaint for lunch. It's rare to get such a great value from a lunch special! We even needed a box. I will definitely be coming back for dinner as well.

First time been here, we really like the food, very delicious, rich of flavor, we tried chef’s tasting menu, which covers many favorite dishes. Talked to the owner who has been there for 30 years, he mentioned two chefs who have been worked there 26 and 28 years. Not easy to run a good business for such a long time.
Xiaofeng H — Google review
I’ve been to many Indian restaurants and I’ve even been to India so I know what good Indian food should taste like. Unfortunately, the food here was not good, and the service wasn’t any better. The flavors were off and didn’t feel authentic. Very disappointing overall.
Sasi T — Google review
The maitre d' was quite helpful in understanding the various dishes. We were there on a Friday night but still got plenty of attention from the maitre d' and the rest of the wait staff. The restaurant was not too noisy, so conversations were easy to understand. We started with the papadam which came with a mint-cilantro sauce. We also split an appetizer of tandoori scallops. The papadam was very fresh and crispy but a little too salty. The scallops were under cooked (as usual, but we had asked that they be cooked more towards "medium"). The sauce accompanying the scallops was very bland, having almost no taste at all. We got a glass of the Edelzwicker wine, which is a not-too-sweet blend of riesling, gewurz and pinot gris. That is a good complement to the spicy entrees. Our main entrees were Chicken Tikka Masala & the Chicken Biriyani. We had asked for a mild version of the biriyani but it was still pretty peppery. The raita helped lower the spice heat though. The chicken tikka masala was milder but the chicken itself was a little bit dry. The plain naan was very fresh and was a good way to get the last bits of the masala sauce.

Had a table for 5, family reunion. We each ordered different dishes, and all were tasty. There are vegan & vegetarian choices as well as chicken & seafood. Beer & wine were available with generous pour, and reasonable prices. Service was helpful and attentive. Easy parking if you are lucky like we were. Decor was interesting and appealing.

I was the youngest patron in this establishment (41F, single). The portion sizes are great! The food isn't authentic 🇮🇳, but it's pretty good. Lamb Biryani was good but a bit dry. Sabzi Rangarang was good. It's a bit pricey. Not super crowded spot, might return.

I was in the neighborhood so I stopped by for lunch. I had Salad and Tandoori Salmon. The salad was organic, it was light and delicious and not laden with too much ranch or fat. The tandoor salmon was really moist, delicious and served sizzling. Tandoori salmon came with basmati rice and aloo palak saag. That saag was light yet flavorful. Overall a very nice meal. I think it is a must try if you are in the area.

Hot dog restaurant
Korean restaurant
Seoul Hotdog in Berkeley offers a variety of Korean-style corn dogs with different crunchy toppings like potatoes and hot cheetos. The hotdogs come with various fillings and sauce options, but some customers wish there was mayo available. The place is known for its great prices and excellent customer service, making visitors feel at home. While the only downside is the limited opening hours, the overall experience of enjoying these unique corn dogs is highly recommended.
These hotdogs are great, although they are different, they have no bun, instead, they are covered with different crunchy toppings like potatoes. Some of them has less sausage to accommodate for cheese. Then there are the sauce you can add on top, mustard and others. The only drawback here is the lack of mayo. There is a banana drink that is typical Korean and taste like banana., that is recommended if you don't have problems with high sugar drinks. The main problem here was that there was no diet coke.
Sebastian B — Google review
Korean street food tucked away in a small space across from the Berkeley campus. Korean corn dogs are not as sweet as the American version since they don't use cornmeal. the crunchy potato cube coating is not greasy. One corndog is enough for a quick lunch Give it a try if you've never had one

I’ve never had these before today. Let me just tell you!!!!! The best corn dogs I’ve ever had in my life! So many varieties, great prices and the best customer service I’ve had in a long time. The owners and employees are very helpful, so caring and make you feel like you’re home away from home. Like literally, I could cry because they were so nice! I will be returning often! Please support this local Berkeley business! You won’t regret it. Plenty of easy parking nearby! Did I mention great prices? Your kids will love it too! My daughter and I are obsessed now! They made our dream of having Korean corn dogs that we’ve seen in the shows we watch, come to life and it was so worth it!!!!

Amazing environment and delicious Korean Hotdogs, I tried #9 for me and my family and we all loved it I recommend it. The place had friendly workers and a very good vibe from everyone. The wait was approximately 3-5 minutes and there is seating everywhere.

I love Korean corn dogs and this place does it well. You can choose your filling and outside which varies with original, potato, hot cheetos and more. I tried the three cheese with hot cheetos. Super crunchy and the cheese pull was epic. They have a few sauce options too. They offer to roll your corn dog in sugar which was a nice salty and sweet contrast. I wish there was more kick/hot from the cheetos but overall so good!
Tiffany P — Google review
What an authentic Korean snack! The batter is nice and thin, so fluffy! What is great about the Hotdog is you can hardly taste oily even though it is deep fried. It is so addictive! Sriracha and mustard bumps up the flavor!
JEONGBUM S — Google review
A must try if in the Berkeley area. These corn dogs are a rare gem in the Bay Area. Although by description they don’t seem like much (a Korean-ized corn dog), they immensely exceeded my expectations. I ordered the sweet potato covered dog and agreed when asked if I wanted to coat it in sugar (because why not??). The outside was perfectly fried, and surprisingly not greasy at all. I’d describe it as the closest cousin to a funnel cake only meatier (meteor?🥲), the texture of the surrounding dough is airy but crispy on the outside. The hot dog inside is not particularly anything special but it shines through in its own ordinarily wonderful way. Will definitely come again! 😊
Abigail C — Google review
We came here for mid-afternoon bite per my daughter's recommendation. We got #2 order (Mozza& Sausage). It was very tasty. The batter is just right. I would recommend it everyone. My only regret is that I did not choose spice batter option. Save it for next time I am at Berkeley. Go Bears!

Jewish restaurant
Saul's Restaurant & Delicatessen in Berkeley is a beloved institution offering traditional Jewish comfort food since 1986. The restaurant is known for its New York deli experience, serving up classic dishes like pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup. Chef Peter Levitt, formerly of Chez Panisse and Oliveto, has set the tone at Saul's with a blend of old-school preparation and contemporary California influence, using locally-grown seasonal ingredients to create a secular Jewish menu.
I love Saul's and have been going regularly for over 30 years. There is nothing like a neighborhood diner and Saul's has the best diner vibes whether you're there for the breakfast bustle, outdoor sunny California lunch, or a cozy dinner. Go for the pastrami ruben but also go for the vegetarian dishes. I think I've eaten everything on the menu. It's all good, especially the pickle plate.
Sara R — Google review
The food’s pretty grub. And the service is very good. Courteous and fast. The pastrami is awesome though a few pieces can be a little dry. But the half sando, half soup is a nice meal. Add a couple bucks if you want the famous matzo ball soup. Comes with slaw inside so remember to tell them to put it on the side if you’re not into wet pastrami sandwiches. The patty melt is tasty but dang, super oily. The whole thing turns out wet cuz of the grease. Caramelized onions tip the scales for this one. Comes with side of slaw or potato salad. I haven’t drank here but they have a full bar. Also some nice pastries. Gets very busy in the weekends but weekdays are cool. Be prepared to spend more than you think. But it’s a good meal and in a good atmosphere. Nice area of town to walk around before or after you feast. Parking is generally available. Meters in front but I usually look on the side streets there they have two hour free parking.

Lovely outdoor seating and a menu full of interesting choices. I absolutely loved the "Malawach" – such a unique and flavorful dish! I also had a cream cheese bagel with chive spread and veggies, which was filling and tasty. My husband wasn’t too impressed with his "chicken schnitzel" sandwich, though. All in all, a pretty solid spot that I’d be happy to return to.

Bringing a date to Saul’s for a first visit I had complete confidence in the dining experience, and I was more than satisfied. If anything they have dialed the service up. Fun and tasty, attentive but not intrusive. A bowl of their soup can be a meal but we got a cup each, plenty of room for the rich, tasty sandwiches after. Our pairings: matzo and a reuben on rye, lentil and roast beef royale (not pictured.) All good but reuben is the best. I have it with the top notch potato salad, and got the house made celery soda, amazing as in years past. We came late and they were out of a few desserts so instead of cheesecake we tried the chocolate layer cake. On a whim I added a pot of hot mint tea and it was the perfect finish to a perfect dinner. I would say “will return,” but we already did, for brunch the next day. (Try the Malawach, a flaky Yemeni flatbread!)

Can’t believe this is my first time here! I wanna say this is the best affordable pan-Mediterranean food I’ve had in the bay. Huge menu for vegetarian options. It was the week Diane Keaton passed away and they put her pictures on the bathroom door which was super sweet.

A few vegan options More vegetation options are available. Pita Yuba and fries. Instead of the normal falafel option this was a nice change of pace. Could have done without french fries in the sandwich. A decent sandwich and fries helped fill up the belly. Surprised to find at least a few vegan options for sandwiches and appetizers. Ate outside but the yellow jackets weren't much fun for many tables. Able to finish without getting bitten. Plenty of seating spaces inside and outside and busy for Friday lunch hours.

Good place for a get together. We made reservations well in advance as it was a Jewish holiday and they texted me with reminders. Service was attentive and food was really very good. Price was high for breakfast but it was a special meal. I liked the corned beef hash with egg on top and the bagels and lox. Great shopping nearby in Walnut Square.

A friend was in town and really wanted to go to Sauls. She was craving the falafel and I had never been so we decided to give it a try. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. My friend did get the falafel plate and I got the half Sando and soup combo. Because I hadn't had matzo ball soup in a long time I decided to go the upcharge and get the matzo with my half Ruben Sando. The pastrami sandwich with acme rye bread was delicious and the soup was good, but do expect to pay a pricy penny for a small portion. The food is tasty but the portions are a bit small. $24.78 (before tip) for half a Sando, a small cup of soup and an espresso. My friends falafel plate looked delicious and fresh. It's like a diner style inside with booths all around. I'm glad I got to try the place out!

Japanese restaurant
Nestled in the heart of East Bay, Kiraku is a vibrant izakaya-style eatery that brings the essence of Japanese tapas to life. With a focus on locally sourced ingredients, this bustling restaurant exudes an inviting charm reminiscent of a jazz performance—always evolving and introducing new specials.
I love this place so much, have been here for years and their food never fails to impress me. Definitely check for reservations ahead of time if you can because it gets busy. Kiraku is definitely one of the best izakaya spots in the Bay Area with a wide range of dishes and fresh seasonal ingredients. You can’t go wrong from their tempuras, to sushi, to skewers. Highly recommend bringing a friend so you can maximize trying different dishes. Prices are a bit higher, but well worth it.
Joanne Y — Google review
The hostess asked us in the beginning if it it our first time to here. She told us the minimum charge per person is $30 after I reply “yes”. It is totally fine for me because I read many good reviews about this restaurant on yelp and little red note. The space is very limited and the hostess required every customer to sit in the table that she managed. It is totally fine for me also. This is my first time to this place. There was no any picture of food on the menu. How did I know which one was popular and how big was the portion? Also, the menu has too many Japanese loanwords as keywords without pictures, it was hard to understand. Then, I figured out that checked the doordash menu and selected the popular dishes because they uploaded all pictures to doordash. I showed my doordash list to the first waitress. She said the menus for dine in and to go were different. She made me totally confused. I said I had no idea on the dine in menu because there were too much japanese. She said not only japanese but english. Come on! Do you mean “Don”and “Hamachi”are English. I said please just order for us. Then, she said she would give us more time and left. If I did not use the hot towels, I would just leave. You can just pointed out the dishes on DoorDash and told us which dish that we selected were unavailable for dine in instead waiting for us. And, when I asked for help” please order for us”, you can just ordered for us based on your waitress experience. Please do not be lazy to use your brain. Please learn from Nippon Curry. Then, I ordered the same dishes with the second young waitress. She just pointed the dishes and confirmed with us. We got the dishes quickly, and the second young lady was the only one person to add water and keep attentive on our area. One more thing, the hostess told us the minimum charge per person was $30, but no one told us the service charge (18%) was mandatory. $110 including mandatory service charge, sales tax, and 4 small portion dishes are ridiculous because the service was poor and the space was limited!!!! I just want to pay the tips to the second young lady. It is very suck to have a dinner in this place!!!!!!!

Hidden gem with soul - this is where Japanese food feels right. Every dish at Kiraku is crafted with care, precision, and that rare sense of warmth that’s hard to find outside Japan. But what truly sets this place apart isn’t just the taste - it’s the consistency. Year after year, the quality doesn’t fade. It actually improves. The staff? Always kind. Always attentive. The atmosphere? Casual but cozy, like your favorite local spot back home. If you’re new to the Bay Area or just hunting for a place that gets Japanese food right, start here. Kiraku isn’t just a restaurant. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back before you’ve even left.

Truly my best dining experience ever. The food was absolute perfection and there were options for everyone. The omakase sampler, shrimp tempura, beef tataki, and corn tempura were definitely standouts. The yuzu sake was one of the best drinks I’ve ever had. Celebrated my birthday here and when you order dessert they will sing for you.

Food was ideal for me. I had the abalone with creamed spinach, the carbonara, and clam miso. The waitresses clearly work very hard to tend to everyone. The chefs make sure the meals are up to par. It does take a long time to be seated which is worth noting if you’re traveling from afar. However, after eating the food I am glad I waited. To be candid it was a 2 hour wait, but this goes to show how in demand the food is. Furthermore, they prep the food fast and as soon as one table leaves someone takes that spot so they restaurant should not be blamed for the long wait.

Potato Croquette: Perfectly crispy outside, soft and creamy inside -- ultimate comfort bite. Grilled Angus Beef Tongue: Tender with a smoky char, brightened by a squeeze of lemon. Mini Kaisen Don: Fresh, flavorful seafood with just the right rice-to-topping ratio. Sashimi Sampler: Generous cuts, melt-in-your-mouth freshness. Overall, a go-to for authentic Japanese small plates. It has that cozy, intimate izakaya feel with warm lighting, lively but not overwhelming. The staff is friendly, attentive, and great with recommendations; dishes came out at a good pace. Expect about 30 minutes to 1 hour wait time during peak dinner hours.
Anny — Google review
I’m looking for great food. Kiraku is very hard to book, but I think it’s a bit overhyped compared to its price. I’m surprised how many good reviews it got on Google map. The seafood is good, but not worth the value. The otoro is not the creamy texture that its price should be. The salmon roe is too salty. Other food like grilled skewers including unagi skews, pork belly skews are ok but not excellent. Talking about Japanese food, people always have an illusion that it must be good. With very expensive pricing, I do not think it is good in taste as rintaro in SF, and both are overpriced even given the pricing level in the Bay Area nowadays. A mediocre restaurant in Japan can outbeat it. The food level also cannot catch up NYC or some Izakayas in Boston.

Surprisingly full on a Tues night. Took me maybe 15-20 mins for a one person table. When I ordered, I was told that I didn’t order enough and that there is a $30 minimum for a walk in. I realized that I actually did order $30 but decided to add one anyway- the smoked unagi because o usually like unagi. But it was inedible. I had to return it after one bite due to way too much smokiness. I was told I was the first one complaining and got charged anyway. With a bill of nearly $50, I don’t feel satisfied at all. I wish I went somewhere else. The rice ball was great though. Uniquely cooked and good flavor.

The Oakland Museum of California is a modern building that houses artifacts and interactive displays focusing on the state's art, history, and science. It features a world-class collection and contemporary exhibitions, making it a standout in the thriving art scene of Oakland. The museum offers visitors a diverse experience with its comprehensive exploration of early 20th-century international photography to late 20th-century documentary work.
So much to see! The museum is separated in 3 sections, history, art, and science. There's sections explicitly for children engagement (fun for adults too!) Also free programing on Friday evening that included dance lessons and a free concert! The art exhibition showed a wide variety of art and artists. It also provided so much insight to the culture of the area, how it was shaped and what it impacted. I can't wait to visit again!

Loved the layout—weaving through the cultural history of California on the second floor, natural history on the first floor, and diverse art on the third floor. Enjoyed it more than MoMa. Definitely worth the trip to Oakland from SF! Note that they officially closed their doors at 4:45, not 5.

I lived in Oakland in the 70s and went to Laney College and it was so wonderful to go back to Laney and then go to OCMA. The current exhibition is stellar. Blacks Spaces: Reclaim & Remain. The other exhibitions and the permanent collection is also amazing.

If you’ve ever craved a crash course in California’s land wrangling told with more drama than a wildfire in a windstorm..... step right into OMCA. Marvel at dioramas where pioneers politely “settle” land, while California’s original residents are busy surviving both history and the latest exhibit revamp. And don’t miss the immersive maps they prove that, despite freeway grids and Instagram, it’s still Mother Nature’s world. Ever wonder how a gold rush, lots of treaties (read: broken promises), and a high-speed train of settlers instantly turned lush Native landscapes into “real estate opportunities?" OMCA’s exhibits spill the beans and the gold dust.

One great way to have a cultural Sunday! A lot to see on history of California from when Spanish discovered this land till Silicon valley garages that gave birth to tech hub that is SF Bay Area! 1st Sunday of each month is free and there are paid special exhibitions as well! The brutalist architecture of the museum has an intriguing contrast with the landscape design of the place! Lovely outdoor & courtyards & live music nights along with a cafe makes it a perfect to-go place for the community!

Amoeba Music is a paradise for indie music enthusiasts, offering free live shows and an extensive collection of new releases and vintage hits. It's a must-visit spot for music lovers, with an eclectic stock that caters to diverse tastes. The store is described as a miracle, offering a wide range of music, entertainment, memorabilia, and audio supplies.
I’ve been to the Amoeba store in SF before, but this was my first visit to the one in Berkeley. As expected, they had everything I could ask for in terms of vinyl. Awesome inventory of many different music types, rarities, box sets, etc. I was very happy with their selection of underground/indie artists, jazz and classic rock. I could shop here for hours given their selection. I was happy with my finds! Support your local record stores!

Come on by to Amoeba Music a vegan business. Make sure you are prepared to leave your bag at the door as it is their store policy. Will update with photos. This is a place for eclectic preferences. Also this is the location where Food Not Bombs FNB distributes free meals every weekday from 3pm to 4pm. I will share my finds as soon as I go back.
Soy W — Google review
This is a cross-review for both SF and Berkeley Amoeba locations. You'll benefit most from this review if you're looking to sell classic and/or rare records. I rarely leave reviews but the discrepancy between the two locations bears distinctions which I believe others could benefit from. I've been collecting records for years and have dozens of rarities with similar appraisal value. When I brought 7 of these to the SF locations, I was quoted 250/170 as per store credit/cash value. However, when I brought 10 comparable and 6 identical records to the Berkeley location, pertaining to the genre preferred by the current locale-based generation, as opposed to the more various nature brought to SF, I was quoted 130/90, substantially lower than quoted in SF. All unopened, 180g custom color, limited edition with artwork and liner notes. It's a tricky situation for newcomers; in SF, you'll be working with a Robert Christgau-like appraiser who will treat you like a jerk, but will give you a very fair price. In Berkeley, there's a younger ginger goatee guy who will act like your best friend, but will quote you substantially lower, most likely due to the fact that they're dealing with college kids most of the time. The quality is great either way, but if you're looking for the most bang for your buck, hit up the Haight location, deal with the stern attitude, and you'll come away happier than if you went to Berkeley. Both locations are dope if you're looking to merely purchase a record, but it feels like the SF spot is more conducive to the benefits of sellers as well as the passion of buyers, whereas Berkeley feels more like they're squeezed economically so you won't get as fantastic of a deal. Does feel like the Berkeley folks will talk ish behind your back more than SF; the Haight location was hella professional, if not for the attitude. Berkeley felt a bit more duplicitous with the chuckling between employees while appraising my wares, while the SF guy was clearly focused on the appraisal. It was kinda tough chilling in Berkeley pretending to look at posters, thinking that the employees had admiration for my records only to discover they didn't think they were worth as much as the SF appraiser in the Haight. Makes me wish the Amoeba GM took more of an active role in day-to-day operations. At this spot, you'll have to endure long lines of parents and/or students looking to expand horizons or placate their offspring, but it can be worth it for certain deals, if one avoids the obvious monetization strategy built upon the UC Berkeley crowd. I'm down to deal with the typical record store vibe established in the 60s, but the trip to the Berkeley spot was barely worth the effort, esp compared to the bump I felt when I worked with the SF folks. Kinda sours me on hitting up Berkeley at all, but still glad to contribute some aural love to the fine folks residing therein!

If you know what they sell, you probably already know where they are. This place is a treasure trove of vintage music.

My last visit from Reno was perfect. 2 employees helped me find exactly what I was looking for. And one overheard me talking to my wife about a search and then walked up to me with the lp. 7 lps and 3 cds later the checkout person was also a delight.

Great little park. Nice big open field (closed in the winter), Public restrooms, basketball and tennis courts, baseball field, picnic tables, and playground. Some off leash dogs who are not always under voice command, so if you have a reactive dog, beware of the hoomans who like to let the pooches run up to leashed dogs (you know the type, rules don't apply to them). There are ill trained children/toddlers who do the same. Nice park, just be aware of the selfish folx.

Monterey Market is a beloved sustainable produce market in Berkeley that offers an impressive selection of seasonal, organic fruits and vegetables sourced from local farms. The market is known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse array of fresh produce, specialty items, and culinary delights. With a strong commitment to quality and community, it has become a favorite destination for food enthusiasts in the area. Visitors can expect to find an extensive variety of mushrooms, colorful fruits, vegetables, herbs, and vegan-friendly options.
I absolutely love Monterey Market! As a former chef, I’m particular about the quality of produce—and this place never disappoints. Their selection of fruits and vegetables is not only diverse but also incredibly fresh and always in season. The way they display their produce is truly beautiful and inviting, almost like a farmer’s market meets fine dining. It brings back memories of the quality ingredients I once worked with in professional kitchens. A true gem for anyone who values fresh, vibrant ingredients.

Beautiful, farm-fresh produce market celebrating the bounty of near lands. Well-priced. A friendly, roadside farm stand feel, but stocked at the level of a large grocery. Excellent option (on a food corner) in North Berkeley.

I wish I knew sooner about this place and not waste time on trader Joe or Safeway. The produce section is the best u can get in area. They also have European, Asian and vegan products. I would recommend this place to everyone.💛💛💛

This is my favorite grocery store in the world, and, happily, it’s just a mile from our house. The quality, variety, and affordability of the produce here is off the charts. I don’t know how they do it, but you can buy purple and yellow cauliflower 365 days of the year, artichokes, dozens of types of greens, dozens of varieties of the most delicious apples you have ever tasted. I don’t understand how they manage to fit it all into one small, beautiful store. If you live in Berkeley, Albany, or El Cerrito, I encourage you to shop here. If you are visiting, come check it out as a wonder of local, organic, nourishing food. I wish only that every neighborhood had a store like this.

Elaine C — Google review
If I could give 10 stars, I would. In a market filled with greedy, exorbitant, pretend-good stores like Bi-rite and Rainbow, Monterey shines light in what it means to operate a high quality store with good produce at reasonable prices. It returned my hope that good food can exist in America and it shows that it is possible for a store to provide an exceptional quality to customers if the owners are not greedy capitalists. Visiting it borders a spiritual experience not because the produce is insanely good, because this is the baseline in other countries, but because it achieves that in the U.S. where this feels out of reach everywhere else. Thank you, Monterey, for proving it is possible, standing with integrity, and being a small hub where you can connect with great food once again. 10/10 ⭐️
Krasimir K — Google review
One of the things I truly appreciate about this business is that every season is like a great little surprise box: heirloom tomatoes I've never heard of, rare mushrooms, and all kinds of greens. Also, even with all this variety of quality, the prices aren't nuts. This has become my go-to place as oppose to the usual chain items.

Sliver Pizzeria is a socially conscious pie parlor located in a funky space. They showcase specialty pizzas, offer a full bar, and host live bands. Customers rave about the delicious pizza and salad of the day, with particular praise for the unique green sauce that takes the pizza-eating experience to another level. The restaurant is known for its great vegan pizza and offers only one type of pizza per day, which changes daily.
Sliver is nice to have every once in while. Slices are small, but make up for it by being very rich (I.e. fatty) and can fill you up. The green sauce is hard to resist and will have your mouth smell like garlicky oil all day.

I was up on Telegraph looking for Weasel Rimrubber's lost dog Splatter, the hair lipped albino water dog from Portugal. I thought I saw him duck into Sliver Pizzeria, but when I saw that dog...it had 4 legs, and Splatter only has 3 ..So I decided to have a couple of slices and pass out photos of Splatter and mention the reward and the fact that he only understands Portuguese. It was my 1st time at Sliver Pizzeria, and the pizza was Amazing! 5 ☆☆☆☆☆!

Running errands the other day on Telegraph Ave, my partner and I decided to eat at Sliver. We ordered a half pizza bc we were inbetween lunch and dinner and just needed a snack. But the half comes with two extra slivers. It was so good and the service was excellent too! Our pizza was ready in 5 minutes and they included the green sauce and limes. They also had three TVs showing baseball, basketball and football, kind of the same sports vibe it had when it was located on Center Street. If you like Cheeseboard, you will love Sliver!

Fox News on repeat at this "pizza with a social conscience" place... The irony. We asked the employees to switch the channel as the Fox News segment was actively spewing false information, and they said no. Didn't even want to engage. We mentioned that we felt disrespected and disturbed watching this segment and they just shrugged and ignored us. Photo proof provided. Great food, dishonest messaging about their so called "mission".

The pizza and salad if the day were both delicious, though I was surprised there was no sauce under the cheese. The green sauce on top of the cheese was great, I just wish I knew I could get more at the sauce bar before I had finished! The bathroom situation is a little underwhelming, but I'm grateful for any customer bathroom on Telegraph. There was a trash can holding open the Men's door so I walked by some guy as he did his business 😅 But again, glad there ARE bathrooms.

GIOIA Pizzeria is a cozy North Berkeley spot known for its NY-style slices with innovative Californian-style toppings. The crackly slices draw loyal locals and teenagers, offering options like the salty Acciughe with Sicilian anchovies and Calabrian chiles, or the rich Julian featuring Calabrese sausage and melted mozzarella on nutty kale. The menu is simple but diverse, catering to every mood.
. I visited Gioia Pizza in Berkeley based on a friend’s recommendation, and it did not disappoint! Their pizza was absolutely delicious with fresh ingredients and a perfect crust. The perfect harmony of chewy dough and flavorful toppings! But tomato paste was so lumpy, kind of overpowering! Hope things will be better the next time.

If anyone is giving this place less than 5 stars - for California? - then they need to sit on their hands. Is Gioia better than some NY, Boston, or Hartford pizza joints? No. But, for the west coast our pizza slices were awesome. The sauce was thick but not too sweet, they didn't overload the cheese, and yes - you could taste the salt that needed to be there. For the most part, our crusts were just right. We were VERY happy we serendipitously stopped to have some pie!!!

This spot has been saved on my bookmarks for a while. Luckily I had a training nearby and had a chance to try it. The space is small with some seating right in front of this business. The lines can rack up during lunch so far ready. They're fairly quick with the order. A co-worker in front of me recommended their avacado salad and Julian pizza. Both were delicious! The total came out to -$23 plus tip, which seems to be an average for lunch these days. The pizza had a perfectly cooked thin crust. The dough was so sparkly doughy and stretchy with the right amount of firmness on the bottom of the crust. The toppings (kale, sausage, mozerlla cheese, garlic..)Jwent well together too with a fair amount dispersed on the slice. The salad was filling. I probably didn't need to get the pizza. It was well balanced with farro, avacado, golden raisins, and almond. The vinaigrette was also a nice balance (you don't need much). Go check them out! "High on Food. High on Life."- thefoodhigh IG/Tiktok: @thefoodhigh

This is a margherita pizza? With unmelted cubes of cheese (maybe mozzarella?) and garlic marinara sauce. The only explanation from the shop keeper after I opened the cold box and showed him was “we ran out of basil,” as he walked away to continue chatting with co-worker. Not recommended. Unacceptable business transaction. Not worth the $45 we paid. Not worth $1. Is this a day old plain cheese pizza with some random cubed cheese added on top and marinara garlic dipping sauce poured on?

Gioia is low-key that spot if you’re craving East Coast vibes with West Coast energy. The crust? Straight-up feral—in the best way. It’s light, just thick enough to keep the slice from folding like a lawn chair, and hits you with this tangy, long-fermented sourness that makes your brain go “skrrt.” The amount of char they’re getting from a gas-fired brick oven is actually bananas. It’s not soft or doughy—it’s crisp, crunchy, and totally serving. Flavor-wise, it’s giving New York slice science: crust, sauce, cheese all in balance. But the toppings? That’s where Gioia flexes hard. There’s a roasted mushroom slice that tastes like a Druid made it. Asparagus with almond pesto, ricotta, and mint that’s full goblin-core. You’ll also catch kale with sausage, pickled jalapeño with red onion, and that fire Ezzo pepperoni that crisps up like tiny grease chalices of joy. It’s bougie but in a “yes chef” way. Slice size? More California chill than New York challenge. You’ll probably crush four and still be thinking about grabbing a fifth. For comparison, two slices at Arinell’s or Arthur Mac’s is a full meal on a budget—this place is more “treat yourself” energy. Definitely more coins per slice, but the quality’s no cap. Now the vibes? Gioia keeps it moving. The staff’s got that “be ready or be gone” energy. Not rude, just quick with it—like, don’t be the NPC holding up the line. No tables, no seating, just pure grab-n-ghost action. Honestly, it adds to the lore. You’re not here to vibe, you’re here to eat and dip. TL;DR: The crust slaps, the toppings go hard, the staff is on turbo mode, and the whole thing feels like a speedrun of pizza greatness. Gioia’s is (at least in North Berkeley) HIM.

Legendary NY pizza right here in Berkeley. I have a different but equal love for all of their slices. Always friendly service. Bonus points for the working Strauss soft serve machine!
Andy M — Google review
I’ve been a loyal customer at this pizza place for many years — long before it became as popular and crowded as it is today. Unfortunately, the atmosphere and service have changed drastically. The ladies at the counter often seem unhappy to be there — no smiles, no greetings, and no thank-yous — which really takes away from what used to feel like a friendly neighborhood spot. On top of that, the pizza by the slice has become inconsistent. Some slices are noticeably smaller than others, yet all are priced the same at $6 something per slice (plus tips), which doesn’t feel fair or worth it when portions vary so much. Even worse, during my last visit, I found a noticeable chunk of sand or grit baked into my Julian pizza. That was extremely disappointing. I truly hope management takes these issues seriously. This used to be one of my favorite places, and now I don’t feel like walking in there again.

Berkeley Bowl West Cafe is a hidden gem that offers a delightful breakfast menu until 11 am. Their breakfast burrito, complete with hash browns inside, is a steal at just $7. In addition to this unique offering, they also serve acai bowls, Mochi muffins, and donuts from Third Culture. The staff are known for their exceptional service.
Vibe is awful when it’s busy. The barista can’t make a good espresso drink. She served me a scalding hot cappuccino that looked awful. Never going back. The entire store is a frustrating experience, no wonder the cafe is just as bad.

I love being able to get a snack before going in to shop. The cafe employees are so friendly, and the pop ups they started doing post pandemic is fun and brings an exciting variety of cuisines. The only fly in the ointment is that they recently started playing annoying pop music over their PA system, making it feel like Im at a Walmart instead of the best grocery store in the world. Please stop playing the corporate chain store music.

This cafe is a treasure. Breakfast till 11am!! Their breakfast burrito comes with hash browns inside. Hash. Browns. Inside. And it’s only $7. In case you’re still reading and not driving to this cafe, then grab your keys and go. They have açaí bowls, Mochi muffins and donuts from Third Culture and the staff and amazing.

This morning, I picked up 4 jars of coffee for a professional meeting. The order was supposed to be ready at 8:30 a.m., but it was actually ready at 8:45 a.m. I didn't mind the 15-minute delay, but the woman in charge of our order was extremely disrespectful and rude. One of the cardboard coffee boxes was covered with coffee, so I asked her to replace it. She reluctantly did so. Throughout the interaction, she never smiled or used polite phrases like "hi," "thank you," or "please." My colleague, who was with me, was so shocked by her behavior that she told the employee her attitude was disrespectful. The employee did not respond or apologize. She kept her hoodie on her head the entire time. This will be the last time I order from here.

Izakaya restaurant
Bar
Ippuku is a Japanese izakaya in Berkeley that offers an authentic dining experience with its wood-clad environment and traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant specializes in yakitori, offering a variety of skewered chicken dishes cooked over binchotan. In addition to yakitori, Ippuku also serves comforting bowls of ramen and has an extensive selection of sake, shochu, Japanese whisky, and beer.
This is truly my favorite Japanese restaurant in town! It’s a bit far from where I live, but every visit is worth it. There’s usually a wait, but the food is so good that I never mind. They have a hidden raw chicken menu, and it’s one of my favorite things to order. Every dish is delicious. The staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and perfect for a date night. Five stars from me. Everything is just so good. Highly recommend.
Olivia — Google review
Food was okay, but as other reviews said, it’s very dark inside, especially as we sat in the little booth across the bar area. Overall an authentic izakaya experience. Would recommend small groups to dine there.
R H — Google review
The atmosphere is super cool with traditional izakaya place. However, the food should be better with more seasonal to taste with the wine. A bit pricey!
Quang T — Google review
Great seasonal dishes with occasional misses, on-point ambience, slightly pricey House pickles are good, crunchy, not too acidic, and offer different textures. Good side to order when you order more than one fried item. Winter oden has a good broth that's mellow and easy on the stomach, but at $20 I may as well just make my own. Fried maitake is a great vegetarian choice with texture, flavor, and aroma. Yakitori set is cooked well, but was under seasoned this time. Tare flavor was too light; it didn't even come off as well salted. Sweet potato would be a great dessert if they could just bring it last.

This place has been in my to-go list forever but it fell short for me. I got to try a few things including the skewers, squid fried rice, wings, porridge, and only standout was the wings. Love the vibe tho!

The atmosphere here is a bit dark, really good for girls, lovers , small group, close friends to hangout, chat in a privately place, with alcohol, you will enjoy the most of the time. The food was good, vary by your own taste, portion is small but not pricey, attentive service inside, but they may be long wait if you’re coming at the busy hours

Day 4

Off the beaten path
For day 4, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Chez Panisse. Not quite as popular as Berkeley Marina, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

A truly magical experience! Both the food and the service were top notch. The flavors were incredible and every detail was thought out. If possible, request a seat by the kitchen! We will definitely be back.

The food was fresh and not pretentious. The staff was friendly, attentive, and also not pretentious. Each course played perfectly with the last. I cleaned my plates. Don't get me started on the dessert. And we were able to tour the kitchen and even had a quick conversation with a couple of the chefs. Totally awesome! Very special restaurant for very special occasions.

Ate upstairs in the cafe, and had a lovely experience. I love the open kitchen. I love the rustic design of the restaurant. I love the mid century style lights and stained glass. The vibe is almost cabin-like. Being able to watch as bread and pizzas went into the wood-fired oven was a treat. Service was a bit relaxed and not as I had expected. Not bad, but just mediocre. I was anticipating hearing more about the food. It’s okay - they let me take home the menu. The food was simple yet abound with subtleties. The dishes spoke for themselves. They spoke of the land and the fields and the farms they came from. The Bronx grapes for dessert were a treat. Unpretentious, high-quality food in a cozy atmosphere. I could really settle into this place for awhile.

This review is coming in a week late but very necessary. I celebrated my birthday here last October 15th with my significant other. My original time slot was at 8:30am but that very morning I got a call from my doctor insisting I needed to be hospitalized soon as possible for a low platelet count. I was torn between giving up my reservation the very same day or proceeding with dinner. Chez Panisse was very accommodating and very considerate and moved my slot from 8:30 to 6:30. That may not sound like a lot but it meant the world to me. I did not want to eat hospital food on the night of my birthday and it’s so hard to get a reservation here and I can see why. I arrived at the restaurant with a happy heart and left with an even happier full stomach. The experience is like no other. The atmosphere is cozy, pristine and impeccable. The staff made me feel so welcome and respected. The entire dinner was fantastic and well prepared. Tasted like heaven. I was the happiest girl in the world. I yearn for another chance to come back to Chez Panisse~

Small cramped and crowded, they need reservations for the bottom and cafe is a hit and miss. The food had good taste , out of the western restaurants their taste is pretty good. We came for a birthday, nothing was offered which was surprising, they usually do offer small dessert. The main server didn't seem very happy to be there. He was not friendly had no welcoming vibes. When we asked what he recommended ,he just brushed over, not much enthusiasm. Will not be coming back and not recommending.
H H — Google review
The food is outstanding. The only thing is the menu being available Sundays and when you have a reservation for Monday or Tuesday, you can’t cancel if you are not fan of the menu served that day. Sadly, it was too late for me to cancel because my menu was salmon. I love salmon, I cook it many times and was disappointed to have such common fish on the menu. I think I would have been happier if they served meatloaf! Next time I’m going there, I’ll make sure to have 2 different reservations on Wednesday and after so I can cancel one of them when the menu comes out. Besides that, the good is great. Prices are high and the mandatory service charged on the check is kinda annoying. I get it why some restaurants do that, yet it’s annoying. I have had much better service at lower level restaurants. But definitely, one has to go chez panisse.
Pierre S — Google review
Went for a birthday dinner last year, and it’s just not worth it. Did the set menu with my partner, and he did the wine paring. Incredible app, and forgettable everything else. I also would’ve expected better service at a fine dining establishment such as this. Wouldn’t go back nor recommend.
Taylor G — Google review
Food was excellent. We had a party of 4 and were able to try everything on the cafe menu. It was a fun outing for a birthday. The service was lacking and a bit slow. Was thinking that it made have been because it is the cafe. I think we may have too high expectations for the service as we have eaten at a variety of nice establishments. The food definitely outweighed the dip in service.

Wonderful gem of a park to visit with family or solo. It’s got a play area for kids but plenty to explore outside of that area. Beautiful views when you walk up the hill.
Angelina C — Google review
This natural slide was definitely an unforgettable experience! As a 40-year-old, I found it honestly pretty scary — it felt quite steep and fast. My 4-year-old son, on the other hand, absolutely loved it and wanted to go again and again! While it was fun for the kids, I personally found it a bit too risky and not entirely safe. I would recommend it with caution, especially for younger children or anyone who’s not comfortable with fast, slippery surfaces.
Yekta K — Google review
Absolutely fun park to take your kids. They have different structures for different aged kids, separated by area. The grass area is plenty large for different kid parties. There is a hiking trail around the area and a concrete slide! What I didn't like was a reasonable restroom to take a toddler. It was a brick shack with a chain as a door. Single occupant.
Dave C — Google review
The park is a little off the street so it can be easy to miss. This is the spot that has the old cement slide. There’s a ton of cardboard that’s already available there to slide down with and it’s a ton of fun. The park itself is clean and there are restrooms through the tunnel toward the tennis courts on the other side of the road.

Codornices is an expansive park opposite the Berkeley Rose Garden. Great for families and all ages. There are play structures for both smaller and older children. The concrete slide is recommended for all - even brave adults who can keep their elbows and knees in! Just be sure to bring or find a sturdy piece of cardboard to prevent personal injury. The park also contains a basketball court, baseball field, picnic areas, grassy hillside, and hiking trails. The hills and dirt trails can be a bit muddy during the rainy season. You can use the tunnel to cross into the Rose Garden under Euclid St.

Very fun slide! A little scary, if I'm honest. I flew down and my daughter tumbled at the end. Tears, no long term fears. She went right back to the top! Brave kids... I loved the tunnel to the Rose garden.

Perfect place for kids and adults! There is a short trail for sightseeing or relax. Two playgrounds for kids, one is for little ones, the other is for elder kids. The kid really loves the concrete slide! Several picnic areas, big grassland, basketball courts, tennis courts, you name it. Besides, there’s a rose garden for a visit through the tunnel. The restroom of the rose garden side is quite clean with washing facilities, while the slide side without the washing facilities.

Each year, BAMPFA showcases around 20 captivating art exhibitions and nearly 400 diverse film programs that span various genres and styles.
Awesome museum! Second visit and we enjoyed it both times. One of the most comfortable museums, as it has a seating area for you to lounge, stretch out and just pause. Highly recommend!

The entrance fee is $14 but there are a lot of discounted and free categories. They also have a coat check service available. The museum is manageable, you would be able to cover all exhibitions in a short time. The wall texts sometimes provide a lot of information but sometimes they don't which is a shame because many of the well described wall text helps me understand the materials, concepts and artist interpretation. Generally the exhibition is curated well too. The gift store is small but has a lot of fun things to buy.

A good museum for contemporary art. It's big but with a lot of hopeful empty space. It didn't take me that long to finish the displays. The art is beautiful but it needs bigger names to generate more appeal to the masses. Maybe they should reduce the $14 admission fee or just make it a free entry museum. Their gift shop is nice, go check it out. There's a cafeteria but it was closed the day I was there. It's better to get there on public transportation than to hunt for parking spaces. Have a meal after the visit at one of the many nice restaurants nearby.

Visited BAMPFA for the first time and was truly impressed by the exhibits. "Routed West" featured an incredible quilt collection that highlighted the history of quilts in California, particularly among African Americans. I was also captivated by "Lee ShinJa: Drawing with Thread," which showcased the artist’s bold innovations in fiber art. It’s astonishing how she created such intricate pieces over five decades, with remarkable attention to detail. Additionally, "Matrix 287," an exhibit in one of the halls, presented anthropomorphic assemblages with fused prostheses that challenge standardized body expectations. Be sure not to miss the Art Wall at the entrance, which features impressive work by artist Stephanie Syjuco in a modern setting. You will definitely enjoy the exhibits if you’re into art and history. Definitely give it a visit if you’re around. Exhibits can be seen in an hour time.

Known for its innovative approach, Berkeley Rep often blends multimedia elements with traditional theater, creating an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

Cute little theater with great ambiance. The play was really well done and I was impressed by the effects as well as use of different media (props, lights, etc), especially for such a small stage! I saw the Far Country and it reminded me of my college trip to Angel Island and the history there. I don't want to go into too many details, but it was really intense, in a great way! I hope everyone comes away with a different viewpoint. I could smell the coffee a soon as I walked in! The snack bar was small and the courtyard had headrests and benches with space to walk around.
Krystal W — Google review
The facility is fantastic and the performance and production values are top notch. But the current production of "Swept Away" features a paper-thin plot devoid of drama or emotion, which is especially perplexing since it is loosely based on a true story that is filled with more than its share of drama and twists and turns. It is still quite enjoyable in a 'listening to an Avett Brothers cover band' type of way but could/ should have been so much more.

Cheese Board Collective Pizzeria is a renowned spot in North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto, offering a unique dining experience. This charming pizzeria and bakery serves one type of vegetarian pizza each day, accompanied by live music. The thin, sourdough crust is topped with fresh vegetables, cheeses, and herbs. The menu features California-style pizzas with fresh ingredients sourced from local farms.
A must try pizzeria! You are served a one and only (vegetarian/vegan) pizza of the day in an amazing ambience. The choice of crust and toppings is simply delicious. The pizzeria knows what they are doing, trust their choices and give it a try. P.S. don’t forget to get a side of zesty green sauce to further elevate the flavor profile.

Luckily the line was short and we got our pizza quickly and got a small Green Sauce and it was worth it! The pizza was good and greasy and the sauce helped but the grease and add some heat. The soft serve has great texture. Would definitely return again if you're looking for a great vegetarian pizza.

The Cheese Board is a Berkeley gem. The pizza was excellent — with one carefully crafted flavor offered each day. Even the vegan option was impressive and full of flavor. On this Wednesday evening, a live band added to the vibrant atmosphere, making the experience even more enjoyable. Although there was a long queue, it moved quickly and was well worth the wait.

Cheese board is simply the bests I have been going here for more than 20 years since I was a kid. They do one type of pizza per day, with rotating menu using local in-season ingredients. You can buy by the slice or a half or whole pizza. They also have a daily salad and a dipping sauce. It’s all vegetarian. I don’t live in Berkeley any more, but make sure I visit every time I come back! The crust is a chewy sourdough and the cheeses are always on point!

This is something out of the world. The guys are running this place for more than 20-30 years and serve only one type of pizza everyday. And they don’t repeat that type on the other day. You need to wait in a queue for over half an hour for your turn. But the tase is amazing and pizza really juicy and well prepared. Atmosphere is very raw with a band of some old guys playing live music of seventies. Its a must visit place and if you love pizza than this should be on your bucket list.
Vikas M — Google review
One the best pizza in the US, at least for this style. There are long lines but it moves fast. It is fast because there is not much to choose from, each day there is a single flavor of pizza. I put 4 ⭐ in atmosphere because sometimes there are bands and the music is too noisy for such a small place. Also 4 ⭐ overall because there is only one flavor per day so there are days that I can't eat there because that day they have onion. At least I can see it in advance on their website. But the pizza es very good, so I recommend it.

This quirky bakery specializes in vegan cinnamon rolls with a variety of frosting and toppings options. The desserts are incredible, especially the brownie and cookies. The staff is friendly and accommodating, always willing to go the extra mile for their customers. This is a great spot for anyone looking for vegan sweets!
I'm not a vegan, however I am open to trying different things. Went to Cinnaholic to have a taste. Wow. Tastes just like a regular cinnamon bun. The bun has great texture and yummy flavor. The cream cheese icing was perfect. I'm looking forward to trying some of their other flavors for sure!

We ordered online and our order was ready for pick super quick... we tried a variety of rolls, to be fair I’m not much of a sweet tooth person! But my mom is and really enjoyed her apple pecan roll. Definitely glad I got to experience cinnaholic!
Gloria M — Google review
Right now they are only doing online orders from their website for pick up or delivery services like DoorDash. I visited this place once 10 years ago and then again yesterday. Was blown away both times but this time I think I enjoyed it a lot more because we planned what we were going to order ahead of time. You can choose from their many frosting and topping choices. The possibilities are endless!! We studied their menu and ordered what we thought would be the best combo. 1 cinnamon bun with cream cheese frosting, raspberries and graham cookies and 1 cinnamon bun with raspberry frosting, blueberries and pie crumbs. They were out of some of the toppings I had seen on their online menu, maybe their toppings are seasonal or something. It was sooo delicious, we loved every bite of both! The cream cheese frosting with raspberries was probably my favourite. Definitely visit in you're in Berkeley and it's a worth a trip if you're not! Everything here is vegan!!!

The cinnamon rolls were large and delicious. My family loved it because It wasn’t too sweet. However, I wish the caramel pumpkin cheesecake roll had a little more pumpkin flavor. Also, the price is a bit expensive.
Hyunjung J — Google review
If you're in the area and there's a Cinnaholic you should definitely stop by! All of the rolls are vegan! I took some die hard Cinnabon, non-vegan friends here and they loved it. We tried a variety of rolls and enjoyed them all! The only 'gripe' my one friend had was that the brown sugar chunks on the pumpkin spice roll were huge.
Chantel ( — Google review
I got the cinnamon roll with peanut butter frosting and cookie dough as a topping and I totally loved it! It was my first time eating here and I’ll definitely come back when I have the chance! Also, I didn’t know they were vegan, which makes them even better! Cruelty free and delicious! 😋
Vanessa B — Google review
We had the cinnamon bun with marshmallow frosting and peanut butter cups on top. So delicious! Could not believe it was vegan. So decadent and rich. We also got a scoop of cookie dough with frosting and pie crumble on top. We couldn't finish it was so sinful.
Joshua ! — Google review
These are very indulgent and great to treat yourself (or a friend!) every once in a while. The cinnamon roll itself was very fluffy and came warm, and the frosting was very rich - not sickly sweet, but just about right. There are many topping and frosting flavour options, and it was initially a bit overwhelming to choose, but the staff was very nice in offering recommendations. I ended up with chai frosting, topped with pretzels and caramel sauce - super decadent and amazing!

Salvadoran restaurant
Cafe Platano in Berkeley is a welcoming spot adorned with folk art from El Salvador, offering incredible Salvadoran cuisine at reasonable prices. The extensive lunch menu features hearty combos of traditional dishes like rice, beans, tamales, and various meat options. Their famous pupusas are stuffed thick corn masa tortillas served with curtido & salsa and come in a variety of delicious fillings such as cheese, vegetables, beef, pork or chicken.
Quite a nice place. In Berkeley, as you approach the restaurant and enter, you are warmly greeted with a sweet smile from Adriana, and she kindly guides you to your table. The scene is nice as you notice all the beautiful art all around the restaurant. The menu is detailed with a few vegetarian options. Needless to say, We came for their famous Papusas! Papusas are stuffed thick corn masa tortilla served with curtido & salsa. They were all delicious, a good size, and served fresh and hot. It is not too salty with a decent amount of cheese stuff mixed well in. They did not come soggy they came fried to perfection. The Papusas we ordered were... 1 Revuelta & Frijoles 1 Revuelta 1 Chicharron 1 DE Res y Queso 1 Queso & Frijoles 1 Queso & Loroco Delicious 😋

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hands-down one of the best Salvadoran food spots we’ve ever been to—seriously! I came here with my whole family, and we all left full and happy. The food was incredibly tasty, and the entire experience from start to finish was smooth and enjoyable. We were seated right away, and our waiter was very nice and super fast. The place wasn’t crowded, which surprised us because the food was top-tier. It’s a great spot for large groups—plenty of seating, very comfortable, and we were never rushed. We loved that the drinks were refillable (huge win when you’ve got kids), and the prices were very reasonable for how much food you get. The variety of pupusas blew me away—so many options and all made fresh. My wife was especially happy with the pastelitos—they reminded her of the ones she used to get during recess back in Nicaragua. I tried one too, and yep, they were delicious. We were also given two complimentary containers of curtido and two bottles of red sauce, which we really appreciated. They didn’t charge us for either, and both were flavorful and authentic. I ordered the lemonade—lightly sweetened, super refreshing, and perfect with the meal. If you’re anywhere near here, don’t skip this place. You won’t regret it!

Been here twice and liked both experiences. The pupusas are tasty and they have a house salsa that is very spicy, which we love! Their ensalada beverage is very refreshing and great to sip after eating some of said salsa. The second time around we ordered the Fried fish. Overall had some nice flavor but was too fried and tasted more like chicharon. We'll stick to the pupusas.
Allan S — Google review
The place was packed when we got there. We went their during lunchtime, so we tried their lunch specials #3, #4, and #9. Lunch special #3 comes with 2 pupusas, plantains, casamiento, and sour cream. Lunch special #4 comes with 2 pupusas, casamiento, and chicken tamale. Lunch special #9 comes with 2 pupusas and a small tropical salad. We also tried their horchata, atol de elote, fried yucca, and chicharrones. Pupusas were good but needed a little bit more flavor, so we all pretty much used up an entire bottle of the sauce they provided us. Plantains were cooked really well. Chicharrones was delicious, too. Overall, it was a good experience.

10/10 would visit again when I'm back in the area. Authentic and delicious--my partner and I shared a lunch special and some yuca fries and it was a good portion. The yuca fries didn't come with sauce, so we tried dipping them in the tomato sauce and crema. The crema was a great impromptu sauce! Completely wiped the plate clean.

Plátano is a salvadorian restaurant with delicious Pupusas 🫓!! The Pupusas sizes are large and can fill you up. There are many other typical salvadorian plates to enjoy as well. There are plenty of seats and the restaurant size is pretty large for a space in Berkeley. Service was great and the food was yummy. Parking around this area can be a challenge, so be prepared to circle around a bit if not trying to park in the structure/garage.
Clinton T — Google review
Really delicious and authentic food. The pupusas my friend got was delicious and the ribs I got had fantastic flavor. The service here is a bit lackluster and we sat around without water for over 30 minutes and it didn't help that the entree prices are a bit high. The pupusas however are great value and quite filling.
Victor W — Google review
Very good papusas service was excellent and courteous. Loved the plantains as well. I don't recall my drinks name but it was fruity and refreshing.

Californian restaurant
Revival Bar + Kitchen is a delightful culinary gem nestled in a beautifully restored historic building, where the charm of yesteryear meets contemporary Californian cuisine. This inviting eatery emphasizes local and seasonal ingredients, showcasing the rich flavors of Northern California's farms and oceans. Guests can indulge in an array of dishes while enjoying craft cocktails in a bright and airy setting.
My husband and I went to Revival last night for dinner and it was an awesome experience from start to finish! Our server, Landis (sorry if I’m misspelling!), was so warm, friendly, and attentive. He made recommendations from the menu, checked on us often, and made our first time at Revival a real pleasant experience. We ordered some cocktails (Smooth Sailing and Trip to Trinidad), a half dozen oysters, and two specials (Denver wagyu steaks with chimichurri, broccoli, mashed potatoes, and pickled radish). Everything was delicious!!! We also ordered a pear and caramel sundae with candied nuts for dessert and it was to die for! Special shoutout to Manager Lucy for making it happen—turns out it was a seasonal dessert and they had actually switched to a strawberry rhubarb sundae, but she said they still had pears on hand and was able to make it for us anyway. Lucky us! My husband and I agreed it was the best meal we’ve had in a good long while! We really appreciated the amazing food and service and will definitely be back in the future!

Excellent pre-theatre restaurant. Quick and friendly service. Really tasty food, well prepared and presented. As appetizers, we had Kenebec potato chips, duck confit legs, and focaccia with three dips, all perfect to start. Then margarita pizza - sauce tasted out of a jar but really good base; little gem Caesar - good dressing but so-so croutons, and crispy pork belly -the star dish. All in all, great food and pretty good value. Great atmosphere.

Revival Bar & Kitchen is not a Berkeley student haunt but a fully realized California brasserie—an urbane retreat with spacious booths in dark crimson leather, antique mirrored headboards, and a long, warmly lit bar. The televisions are few; the noise is culinary. Scrawlings on butcher paper nod to its locavore ethos, while an open kitchen sends out the unmistakable sounds of real cooking. Bartenders are unfussy and quick. Fieldwork beers pour well, and the whiskey shelf is deep. What distinguishes Revival is rigorously local sourcing: Northern California meats, produce, and seafood, nearly all within a hundred-mile radius. The baby-back ribs, house-ground burger, Painted Hills steak, and wild king salmon are consistent standouts, well-prepared and seasonally attuned. Wines are chosen with intent, cocktails lean classic, and nothing feels overdesigned. It’s a restaurant that thinks like a city spot—discreetly stylish, serious about food, and just earsteps from campus and downtown. Highly recommended.

I was so hungry and exhausted. I didn't want to dine in a samll.whole.in the wall with quick food. I knew ai wanted something good. I came to the corner of the block and found Revival. I am very impressed with the presentation of the food, the warm ambiance inside. Plush seats and open space. Open bar very classy and upscale. Out server was polite, nice and informative. He was patient and offered good suggestions. I will make this my new spot.

OBSESSED! Delicious, fresh, delicate food. I could eat here everyday. The restaurant is also such a cool vibe, with rustic interiors and attentive waiters.

My favorite restaurant in Berkeley! If you’re looking for seasonal food that is creatively assembled revival is perfect. The menu definitely defines and expands upon California cuisine 🙏🏽✨✨✨⭐️

Friendly and welcoming staff, creative cocktails and excellent food. I enjoyed the Gardens of Babylon cocktail (which includes mezcal, white tequila, Douglas fir and beet), local Tomales Bay oysters and wonderful seared scallops in an apple cider reduction over mushrooms, spinach and delicate squash. Great meal.
