Nature & Parks
State park
Calderon Park, located in the heart of Cuenca, is a small landscaped square surrounded by government buildings and two churches. The park features a monument to Abdon Calderon, a hero of the city's independence, as well as eight tall pines brought from Chile and planted by President Luis Cordero. Visitors can take a few minutes to rest and admire the city's majestic architecture while enjoying the shade of large trees.
Absolutely beautiful. A nice place to sit and enjoy the city of Cuenca. Make sure to cross the street to visit the church and admire its architecture. You can climb the stairs to the top terrace by the access door in the small walkway alley beside the church for a small amount $.

Beautiful park, right across from age old church, nice fine dining around the park. No public toilets and all the establishments won’t let you use until you are a patron. Always some activities going on. Don’t miss it!!

A beautiful park in one of the main plazas of the city, it's very nice to sit in, very clean, and feels very safe even at night, occasionally there are musicians and artists playing or making some art. In general just a great place to rest yourself while roaming the city.

Catholic cathedral
Catholic church
The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción, also known as the Cuenca Cathedral, is a remarkable landmark in Cuenca, Ecuador. This grand Catholic church was built over 80 years starting in 1886 and can accommodate more than 9,000 worshippers. With its stunning Romanesque-revival architecture featuring three blue and white domes, the cathedral stands out in the historic city center.
Wow, wow, wow! This cathedral makes other cathedrals pale in comparison. It's scale and grandeur totally blew me away. It's impressive both in the day and at night, although I'd recommend visiting in the day, as you can enter. And it opens at 7am, so there's really no excuse not to. It has distinctive blue stripes domes which are even painted blue inside too. The grand entrance, which remains closed until major events is jaw dropping. The front is relatively flat and basic, but beautiful nonetheless. But the real draw is when you enter. It's absolutely enormous and it's decorated so beautifully with incredible marble. It's also free to enter, unlike many similar places, but you are asked not to take photos and videos during services, out of respect. Likewise, you're asked to dress appropriately, so please, no flip flops and short shorts. There's also an interesting scale model of the building inside.
Hidden F — Google review
This Cathedral is definitely a feast for the eyes, both inside and out! There are plenty of paintings and carvings to admire, and you can walk up several floors to see the lovely view from the roof also. Definitely recommend a visit.

What an incredibly beautiful place just amazing to walk in and observe the detail and the Beautiful interior of this historic structure in the heart of Cuenca. You can go in there and just sit and look around for hours at the beauty and consume the spiritual presence of this Grand Cathedral. It kind of reminds you of Notre Dame an absolute must go to when you're in Cuenca.
S.T. R — Google review
This grand church has beautiful art everywhere. Then we took the stairs for the views on top, and they were impressive. We were surrounded by several points of interest we've visited during our vacation.
Dan P — Google review
This is a beautiful cathedral and apparently the largest in South America. It is the most iconic landmark in Cuenca and a great photo opportunity from inside and out. Having been to Cuenca multiple times, I have now photographed this place from multiple spots across the city. And for a small fee, you can climb to the top and get great views of the downtown area of Cuenca.
Brian S — Google review
This an absolute nice place is very big you have the chance to go to the rooftop of the church that’s how they called for that you have to pay $2,75
Cristian E — Google review
Big cathedral that was only open during mass. Many people attend mass of all ages. It was a holiday weekend, so there were hundreds of people. The nearby park and flower market 🌺🌹🌺 are a draw too. Vendors sell religious articles on the steps of the cathedral.
Peterson T — Google review
It’s the most recognizable structure of Cuenca, one of UNESCO-designated World Heritage Centers👏👏👏. This building is one of many architectural treasures of the city, but this one is not an old colonial structure. It’s a modern edifice constructed from the mid-1880s to mid-1960s. It’s a predominant Neo-Romanesque with Spanish Baroque influence, conceived by the German architect Johannes Baptista Stiehle who also built San Alfonso Basílica of Cuenca and the Buga Basilica in Colombia. The arches, both interior and exterior, are very Romanesque/Byzantine. The most notable feature are the Renaissance-designed blue/white domes made of tiles imported from the former Czechoslovakia. The building is mostly Ecuadorian marble 😎😎😎 but the floor marble apparently are Italian. The main entrance door has a dramatic arch entrance, the door itself is a very thick heavy metal (bronze?) and highly decorated. It leads to a high altar, with all the usual catholic idols. The altar is a theatrical Spanish Baroque design. 😎 It is made wood with highly carved and spiraling Solomonic columns. 😎 The canopy of the altar has been carved to resemble the canopy of the Peter’s Basilica of Vatican. 😎 The entire altar including the columns layered in gold. The side naves are exact replicas of the central nave. They have several altars, each dedicated to a catholic saint, one of whom was an Ecuadorian Hermano Miguel. The building is actually unfinished. *** The two side towers are less than half the original design. The “shortened” towers are the base of the original design. *** This was apparently due to a miscalculation😊, the base cannot support whatever would have been built on top of them. NOT TO MISS::: At the front end of the left nave, before the presbytery, + 😎😎😎 there’s an original wooden model of the design, which includes the architect’s original idea for the high towers that were not built. + On the wall is a memorial to the architect Johannes Baptista Stiehle.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Plaza San Francisco in Cuenca, Ecuador has a rich history dating back to 1558 when it became municipal property. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes such as being the city's first market and a hub for public transportation. Today, the plaza is surrounded by a diverse array of local crafts and regional goods. Visitors can capture stunning views of the cathedral from this vantage point and explore the interior for more photographic opportunities with its stained glass windows and intricate details.
It’s a large pedestrian square with nicely built vendor huts of various merchandise. On one side, within the buildings, are stores selling quality alpaca clothing, scarves, and blankets. Amongst these stores are also great sources of hand embroidery. The square itself is a center of activity. This Christmas season, it’s the location of a very tall, well decorated tree. It has dancing lights, very pleasing in the evenings.

It's a European style, touristy square with nice architecture, lots of vendors (pancho, street food, souvenir), a flower market, surrounded by busy traffic.
Estela Z — Google review
Lots if vendors, mainly clothes also souvenirs. Nice restaurants nearby. Full of colours with women dressed in their outfits. Nice place to look around for a few hours. Don't forget to look for entrance between 2 stalls, because it leads to a courtyard with various little shops where the people there do their own work and sell it. You find jewelry, music instruments and more, all handmade.

Restaurant
Tiesto's Cafe Restaurant, run by Chef Juan Carlos Solano, offers a memorable dining experience with its hearty Ecuadorean and Andean dishes. The restaurant is housed in a grand colonial building and is named after the traditional clay pot used in Andean culture. Known for its fine dining using local ingredients, Tiestos boasts an assortment of 20 homemade sauces to accompany its dishes.
What a fantastic restaurant and by far our favourite food in Ecuador so far. Started with a tasty chorizo-based starter, and it was delicious. In fact, even before the started, a basket of bread with a selection of pickles and chutney was provided. Hard not to eat them all, as they were so full of flavour. For our main, we went for the chicken macadamia dish, served with rice, potatoes, semolina and more. Just amazing. Our waiter was extremely friendly, and as our Spanish is developing, he spoke good English with us. Overall, we cannot recommend this restaurant more highly!
Adam C — Google review
Tiesto’s has a big reputation in Cuenca, so we were excited to finally try it. And while the food mostly lived up to the hype, the overall experience had some definite downsides. What we loved: 1. The flavors. When the food was good, it was really good. The beef? Cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. 2. The interactive service. The waitstaff made us try different sauces and explained everything, which made the meal feel more special. 3. The decor. The restaurant has a charming, traditional feel that we absolutely loved. It adds to the experience. What we didn’t love: 1. Waiting 30 minutes in the rain. Even with a reservation, we were left standing outside, and the door person wasn’t exactly welcoming. That kind of start sets a bad tone. 2. The pork was a disaster. Dry, overcooked, and so tough it got stuck in our teeth. 3. The soup was barely there. It tasted good, but the portion was tiny. 4. The family-style ordering. With a group of 17, this was a logistical nightmare. Very few personal dishes meant a lot of back-and-forth trying to accommodate everyone’s preferences. Would we go back? Maybe, but not with a big group. If you’re after great flavors and don’t mind some logistical headaches, it’s worth a visit. Just hope for good weather and order the beef.

From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I knew I was in for an exceptional dining experience. The ambiance and warm hospitality of the staff immediately set the stage for what was to come. The menu showcased a diverse array of delectable options, all crafted from locally - sourced ingredients and carefully prepared with great attention to detail. The presentation each dish was a work of art that perfectly complemented with the exquisite combination of flavours. The attentive service (Sebastian) throughout the evening was unparalleled, consistently going above and beyond to ensure our meal was nothing short of exceptional. My experience was further elevated by the passionate and talented Chef Juan Carlos. Not only he created an array of mouthwatering dishes with exquisite flavours, but he also took the time to share his knowledge and expertise with us. What truly left a lasting impression, however, was the chef's incredible talent for turning desserts into edible art pieces. The chef's dedication to their craft and desire to share his passion, made my visit truly exceptional. As an Ecuadorian , I felt so proud to find a world-class fine dinging experience in the beautiful Cuenca!

This restaurant was an experience, It highlights ecuadorian cooking and different skills and flavors that mesh well. We had a waiter - who at first felt like he was trying to sell us a used car - but for some reason we accepted his recommendations and we were blown away. The different meats in different types of sauces - the fish was amazing. Having the shared plates genius. Showing us how to eat them as well. The chimmicurri is sooo good!!! excellent presentation and really fun!

This is not just a restaurant. Tiesto's is an Experience. It is not cheap, but it is worth every penny. The atmosphere is 100% Ecuadorian. It is cozy and intimate, simple yet elegant and Juan Carlos Solano is always there to welcome you with a huge smile. The staff are genuinely happy to see and welcome you. We only order the tasing menu (about $99 for 2), and that is where the magic of Tiesto's happen. The dishes keep coming, and each one is better that the one before it. Cuenca is my home for 2 years so far, and Tiesto's is the best eatery the city has top offer. Do yourself and your family a favor, and go to Tiesto's. You will never regret or forget the experience.

Wow! This is a truly delightful experience from start to finish. The waiter will guide you through what to order and how to change the taste of the various dishes by adding hints of the spiced salsas and flavored sause condiments. He even went around our table instructing us to put things on our spoons while he added a hint of different flavorings from small bowls on the table. Go here hungry because this is a multiple course meal (I may have lost count of the dishes!). The chef and owner is a big personalities, and he visits his patrons talking to each table. If you ask, you can watch and film him creating artful dessert plates.

If go go to Cuenca this is a must, the food is delicious, service exelent and prices are cheap for what you get! The owner who is also the chef welcomes you and interacts with customers which to me is a plus! We went for one of the tasting menu and everything was great. At the end the chef gave us a couple drinks for free which where perfect to digest all the food we ate. I will for sure go back on my next visit to Cuenca :)

Flea & Street Markets
Nestled in the heart of Cuenca, Mercado 9 de Octubre is a vibrant and lively market that captures the essence of local culture. Open daily, this bustling hub offers an impressive array of fresh produce, meats, and cheeses alongside tantalizing street food options like slow-roasted pork. The atmosphere is electric with the sounds and sights of everyday life, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.
A global traveler’s delightful walk through and produce shopping in a wet market. As I always do, a visit to an open public market is a pleasure to gain appreciation of local culture and norms. This is probably the most organized market in Cuenca. The Mercado has a huge open plaza that it shares with a hotel. The market itself is not only the one inside a big while pavilion but also vendors on streets along the plaza….This illustrates the entrepreneurial spirit of Cuencanos 😎😎😎😎😎. The array of produce inside and outside of the market pavilion displays an amazing spectrum of colors that are most pleasing to see😎😎😎. The market pavilion is clean and orderly 👏👏👏 - fruits and produce on the main level - meats and fish on the lower level, and - a food court on the upper level. It’s truly a one-stop shopping for farm products.— Great place to practice one’s price-bargaining skills 😊.

This market is big enough to bring you amazement but small enough to not take all day. It really is just a spot to but food too cook or on the 3rd floor to eat. I can say if you eat Pig go to the 3rd floor and have some of the roasted pig. It is the best I have ever had. I even tried it in other spots around Ecuador and this place just has it down right. Of course food by American standard is inexpensive and it seems to be just about the right price for the area. I have read people calling it dirty. I don't agree at all . The place is old so some stuff is worn out but nothing was dirty and even the meat market didn't smell bad. That is definitely not the case everywhere.

Raimipampa is a must-visit spot in Cuenca, perfectly located on the main square. It's a well-established restaurant with a strong presence on Google Maps. The overall experience was good, reflecting the higher quality of life in Cuenca. We tried traditional dishes like Mote Sucio, featuring eggs, potatoes, and corn—authentic and decently prepared, though not extraordinary. The service was excellent, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. However, the prices were on the higher side for Ecuador, but the portions were generous. A solid choice for those wanting a taste of local cuisine in a prime location.

A delightful lunch in an Cuenca dining institution😎😎😎. Located in Parque Calderon, it’s a popular place to locals dating back to 1930s. The menu is rather longish but manageable, there are some pictures of what seems to be popular fares. Food served is more of the POPULAR ANDEAN FARES rather than coastal Ecuador food. 👍 The warm table toast with house sauces is a nice touch. 👍👍👍 👍👍the Ensalada Fresca is MOST DELIGHTFUL: a rather large platter of lovely greens and veggies with sautéed mushrooms in a very pleasing light and light drizzle of balsamic, topped with grated Parmesan. 👍👍👍👍👍 the Trucha Frita is surprisingly very good. Deep fried whole trout, VERY CRISPY SKIN and WITHOUT AN HINT OF OIL. PERFECTLY COOKED, Very flavorful without the need of sauces. Served with a lovely house salad, fresh red onions and avocados. The fries are crisp fresh cut potatoes that are themselves seasoned. OVERALL A LOVELY LUNCHEON. Service is quite good. The eatery is an unassuming but quite welcoming place😎. It is a well lit dining room with a mezzanine. It has minimalistic yet pleasant decor (the framed photos look like old mementos from the 1900s).

It’s at very convenient location after visiting the cathedral. It looks old inside as we found this restaurant may founded in 1910 from a wall picture. The food is of gorgeous amount and fresh. Just not that easy to accept the flavor as foreigner. But ok to take a try the local food. The washroom is very smelly, the one thing really disliked it.

I recently visited Raymipampa Restaurante and tried their Plato Típico. It was a hearty and flavorful dish featuring tender pork, savory black sausage, white corn cooked with egg, a potato patty, and a refreshing salad. The portion was generous, and every element was well-seasoned, capturing the rich, traditional flavors of Ecuador. To accompany the meal, I had a refreshing Pilsner, a smooth and crisp Ecuadorian beer that paired perfectly with the savory components of the dish. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. Raymipampa is a fantastic spot for anyone looking to experience authentic Ecuadorian cuisine in a cozy setting. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors!

The location for this restaurant is great, right next to cathedral with great view of the central square. Foods are yummy but a bit salty. The garlic bread is delicious! Looking to sip some delicious cocktails on a rooftop with a view of the cathedral? This international chain provides exactly what you’d need for a nightcap. The servers were very friendly as well, and weren’t bothered that we were just there for drinks (it was 10 p.m. after all). The entrance to the rooftop bar is inside a clothing store, giving it a speakeasy vibe. The cocktails were delicious— and I absolutely loved the “Jengibrazo”, a twist on the classic canelazo. The Andes Negroni was a hit as well for those Negroni lovers. The food menu had a lot of sushi options. Would have loved to tried some if we had another night in Cuenca.

We were recommended to come here and we weren’t disappointed! We ordered two medium pizzas, which are very generously portioned , so perhaps one would have been enough to share . The pizzas were absolutely delicious. The bases were the best we’ve had , light and perfectly cooked . A wonderful experience, we would definitely recommend coming here.

Great place with an extensive menu of pasta, pizza and other items. The pizza was well prepared with a nicely cooked crust, and we had a nice shrimp appetizer. Great meal, only drawback was no whisky 🤣

Actual (4.5 stars, rounded up to a five because there is something for everyone that is quality and affordable) Atmosphere is central to the historic area and always bustling it seems. A little chilly but still sat outside as the energy was great and the restaurant didn't pretend to be a gimmick or something they were not. Service was awesome! They didn't mistreat my Guayaquil family at all :) Food: Bake Ziti and BBQ pollo (don't hate please haha) / Margherita pizza. First, the Bake Ziti; I am sure they made their own meat sauce and it was quite delicious but they must freeze it because it came out watery almost like a soup. They are lucky it was so delicious, but unfortunately not full points. The noodles were cooked to perfection and seasoned altogether very well. The breadstick provided was delicious and left me wanting more. Pizza(s); we asked for half and half in case the bbq wasn't good but it was! I am very picky about pizzas since I spent a large amount of my youth working in pizzerias and the dough did not disappoint. It was great! However, you could see some age in the inside of the cooked dough which is an indicator that the dough might have started to age likely from preparing it the day before (it is a common practice for busy places). I don't think they freeze the dough but definitely refrigerated so it maintained a nice freshness despite it starting to age. I really liked the dough which is very important. There was no red sauce on the pizza but the cheese and toppings were great and fresh. Complementary to the meal, we had a boiled wine (mulled wine without the cinnamon bits) and it was really good! I didn't care for the sugared rim, though. And the house red wine is very good and a generous amount. I want to try all the dishes, but I can't because I'll get fat. Thank you for the excellent experience in Cuenca!

We ordered a vegetarian pizza, it had literally three mushrooms , three broccolis and a lot of tomato slices covered the whole thing !! I don't know if they are cheap when it comes to ingredients or inexperienced with simple food like a pizza!! How could it go wrong !!

We picked this place out of location and convenience after a long day on the bus, but it turned out to be really good food and generous portions. I think the prices were fair and the service was great!

Found this place by accident, was a little skeptical since we arrived hungry at 1045p, we wondered if we’d get good food and for sure we did. We had the chicken milanesa and the chicken spaghetti. Both were delicious, portions were decent and so were the prices. Oh and can’t forget the fruit juices, they too were fresh and tasty. We’ll be back.

We have visited this bar restaurant for many years. The food quality is amazing and the service great. The plates/dishes are well served that you may split for 2 such as the chaulafan. We recommend the trucha frita and the tomate de árbol juice. Definitely will will go back soon.

My family and I had dinner in this famous restaurant. I had the caldo de gallina soup and it tasted terrible. It didn't have a good flavor. The dessert was ok. It was so delicious. In the middle of my dish I found a hair and I wanted to throw it, but I couldn't because I had a pain in my arms. So overall it was so terrible and bad.

Shopping mall
El Vergel Centro Comercial is a low-key indoor-outdoor mall that has been open since 1981, offering a variety of small shops and a popular supermarket. Located in the El Vergel/Stadium barrio, it provides a convenient shopping experience with its well-stocked grocery store and friendly staff. The area also boasts grand old homes on quiet streets with large yards and mature trees, making it an ideal place for close-in living.
An upscale Supermarket with well stocked shelves and friendly helpful employees. Shopping around will yield less upscale pricing. Still a nice store!!

Small shopping mall with lots of good stuff to buy. Supermaxi grocery store is the anchor here. The surrounding neighborhood is overflowing with good restaurants. Regular taxi service is just outside. Very safe area. Day or night.

What a great place!! Although my Spanish is still quite sparse, the young lady at the customer service desk was very friendly and helpful. The selection is great. American products are obviously more pricey than in the States but you can find comparable local brands that cost less.

Nice selection of stores, upstairs and downstairs, with a good selection of personal products for both men and women as well as things for the home and appliances. Upstairs you will find a completely remodeled Supermaxi that looks like a US supermarket and carries many US products. I'm a regular shopper at this place.

Hat shop
When exploring Cuenca, a visit to the Museo del Sombrero De Paja Toquilla is an absolute must! Nestled on Calle Larga near Padre Aguirre, this charming museum features a striking giant Panama hat adorning its entrance. The space serves as both a workshop and showroom for Rafael Paredes & Hijos, one of the oldest and largest Panama hat makers in the area.
If you're in Cuenca, Ecuador, and in need of a handmade Panama hat, look no further. This was a very cool store with a great selection of styles and quality. They have a nice rooftop coffee shop with a wonderful view as well.
Ed W — Google review
I have to stop going... I've too many hats now! Lol While you're waiting for them to create, mend, clean, or just because ... go upstairs, have a beer, and enjoy the view
Christopher — Google review
Came to tour this museum as part of the stop on the walking tour. Got to learn the real history of the Panama hats and a demo on how to create the shape of the hat. The top floor offers a coffee shop with a nice view. To my surprise, I ended up purchasing a hat after the tour. Do note that your entrance fee gets deducted from your hat purchase.
Cindy W — Google review
Great activity to do in Cuenca. It takes around 40 minutes and you get to learn a lot about the Toquillas hat. Thanks a lot to Sebastian for the good tour.
Diego P — Google review
This was my least favourite "Panama" hat experience in Cuenca. The location is great, but it's not much of a museum about Panama hats as such (more about the particular people who owned the factory). It seems like it's mainly a shop, for which I would give it a higher review because there's a broad range of very good hats at different prices and you can watch them being made.
Emiel S — Google review
Great place to visit. The hats are beautiful. You can see the stages of making the hat with explanation from the staff. We loved it. Don't miss it.
Mélissa S — Google review
Don't expect a typical museum when going here. It's more of a hat store with some exhibitions related to the classic "panama" hat. Apart from that, the service is great, you get to see how they make hats and it has a nice cafe on a terrace with great view
Sergio P — Google review
For a minimal fee you get a guided explanation of the family business and get to learn about these traditional hats. Well worth a visit.

The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients to create beautifully presented dishes that showcase the vibrant flavors of Ecuador. Highly recommended! The food was spectacular — we tried everything from starter to main dish and dessert, and every course was absolutely delicious. Our server Alejandra truly elevated our experience with her attention to detail, thoughtful recommendations, kindness, and professionalism. The atmosphere was wonderful, and every employee greeted us warmly with top-notch attention. One of our best dining experiences!

El Mercado is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere that perfectly blends rustic charm with modern touches. The service was exceptional — friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about every dish. The food was the real star of the show. Every plate was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. You can really tell that the ingredients are fresh and that the chefs put care into every detail. The grilled octopus or the fritada was out of this world, and the cocktails were perfectly crafted to complement the meal. Whether you’re coming for a casual lunch, a date night, or a special celebration, El Mercado delivers a memorable experience every time. Highly recommend — can’t wait to go back!

Elegant dining in Cuenca, highly recommended by a famous model from Guayaquil. Everything was exquisite, 5 5-star experience; however, I deducted 1 star for the extremely long delay between the main course, which created discontent among the group. Lomo El Mercado was spectacularly cooked to perfection $24.90, an incredible value.
Garrett H — Google review
I ate here 3 times during my 5 days visit in Cuenca. The foods, their presentation and the environment are all good. So is the service and the wine. I’m taking out one star from the food because of the duck paella I had during my last dinner there. Although the dish was great in term of flavor and texture, the few thin slices of duck is really disproportionately little compared to the rice. It made me feel dissatisfied at the end, a shame.

A Culinary Gem in Cuenca! El Mercado is an absolute must visit! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm, attentive service and an atmosphere that beautifully blends rustic charm with modern elegance. The food? Simply exquisite. Traditional Ecuadorian dishes are elevated to a whole new level each bite is a celebration of flavor, quality, and creativity. You can truly taste the love and craftsmanship behind every plate. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, dining at El Mercado is an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!

It’s a well appointed restaurant 😎😎😎 as I remember from several years ago…. As such I have high expectations….. BUT SILLY AND SERIOUS MISTAKES dampens the dining experience🫤🫤🫤. 🫤🫤🫤 The waiter pushed for cold refrigerated red wine. I insisted an ambient temperature bottled be opened. RED WINE MUST NEVER BE SERVED CHILLED. 🫤🫤🫤🫤🫤 THERE’s EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF GARNISHES in both the starters and main entrees. GARNISHES SHOULD ALSO UPLIFT FLAVOR OF THE DISH. They are NOT a filler NOR a simple decor NOR otherwise dampen/detract the primary flavors. INDEED, *** The Pulpo (Octopus) appetizer comes with EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF CREAMED CORN. The octopus should be king NOT the side attraction. *** The Sweetbreads (Mollejas Croquetas) again comes with TOO MUCH WHITE CARROT PURÉE. The sweetbreads should be star!!! WORST ARE THE LEMON SAUCE DROPS THAT ARE EXTREMELY SOUR 🤬🤬🤬. It kills the flavor of the sweetbreads. *** The Frito Cerdo 😎 is a nice twist of preparing pork ribs. BUT THE AVOCADO PURÉE IS NOT APPROPRIATE. It does NOT add anything, in fact it dulls the flavors of the ribs. It should be clear to anyone that BOTH pork and avocado are naturally fat/oil-containing… THEREFORE A GARNISH PURÉE should balance and uplift the fat of the pork!!! Pork goes well with fruit…so why not consider a SMALL AMOUNT of fruit compote like figs, orange or cranberry???? The MENU looks well planned… BUT AGAIN the cook needs to know BALANCE and WHICH OF INGREDIENTS should be king!!! The selection of wines by the glass are quite good and reasonably priced👍. But the rest of wines are overpriced at 200% to more than 1000% overpriced… None of the wines at vintages that warrant those exorbitant prices.

Bridges
Puente Roto, also known as Broken Bridge, is a popular riverside walkway in the historical center of Cuenca. It is lined with lawns, restaurants, and cultural sites such as the Pumapungo Museum and the Museum of Aboriginal Cultures. The bridge itself is an icon of Cuenca's history and offers a perfect spot for taking pictures. Despite being partially destroyed by river flooding, it has become a top attraction in the city.
One of many bridges in Central Cuenca that gained notoriety a a restored “broken incomplete” structure. Originally built in the mid-1800s, it connected the upper and lower areas of the city separated by Tomebamba River. A century later in 1950, the river flooded, taking away half of the bridge. Structural support was later added to the standing structure to what remains today. It became a landmark upon Cuenca’s designation as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A ( — Google review
It is a bridge structure that 2/3 of it was taken down by the river Tomebamba. What is left of the structure is well maintained and it's a good place to take photos.
Alvaro V — Google review
A very nice stone bridge that used to cross the river. The river took it down twice and it was rebuilt. However, the third time the river took it down, they decided not to rebuild the crossing. Now it sits there unfinished as a reminder of the power of the river when it rises
Jim J — Google review
A nice place to visit to get a little history. The bridge, although never rebuilt, is accessible up to the point it 'breaks'. Worth a visit for photo op.
La P — Google review
It's a bridge but very beautiful spot to take pictures on a Sunny day with the family or friends. Take in the view and breathe in the fresh air its surreal. I went there to take asthetic pictures. You can walk down the stairs and reach the boardwalk to a small river diving the two sides. There is a church nearby and a few restuarants and tourist atractions.

The Broken Bridge is a unique site to see from under as well as on top. There is no cost and it is right next to the river so it is peaceful.

Strategically located in the Historic Center of Cuenca, this establishment boasts an attractive ambiance and a diverse selection of dishes.
Great place for ramen and good juice. I ordered coconut lemonade and it was delicious. Also I asked about their special ramen and it was different from others that I've tasted before because it was thick and white. Like a mushroom soup but with the seafood and avocado 🤤

They have the best sushi wraps I've ever had. They also cater to food allergies and my daughter can actually eat here! The owner is very friendly. They deliver. They have outdoor seating. Highly recommend!

Fancy new place, lots of attentive staff members, a good choice of different rolls and bowls on the menu. The portions are quite big, the vegetables fresh and tasty, though the quality of the fish didn't quite covince me (that's the missed 5th star) for what it cost. The veggie-options are remarkably cheaper, and really nice! Altogether a recommended place to eat in a good atmosphere!
Ricarda M — Google review
A combo lunch for 8$ and it was actually filling. Really great space and the flavors were good I loved the fries!

Centrally located in the Historic Cebter of Cuenca. Beautiful space, fun, fast and friendly staff (they speak English too) and nice variety of dishes. Definitely recommended. I got the Mini Zuzu Mix Burrito (excellent and with lots of fish inside), Woke Up tartare which was super delicious and also large for a sushi place and the Big Bang Poke bowl which I made spicy and it was DELICIOUS and super fresh. Very normal prices too, I must add and they accept credit cards.
Stavros V — Google review
The premise of this restaurant is the sushi burrito which is basically a foto maki (fat sushi roll). If I paid $10 for a basic sushi roll in the US I would think that was a little expensive, but this is Ecuador. The ingredients were basic and lacking flavor with rediculous amounts of celary. It's expensive and it's not a novel concept. The poke bowel and the burrito had the exact same ingredients in. First time last time.
James H — Google review
Nice place too eat, but abit confusing as to how too make a purchase of the food. Personale is cold and not attentive, needs better customer service training.
James P — Google review
Rice in the sushi rolls was extremely overcooked and mushy. See photos attached (it doesn’t even look like rice because it’s so overcooked). Fish quality is subpar. Everything is overpriced ($40 for 2 rolls, 1 order of sashimi, 1 order of edamame, 2 small beers). They forgot and made my rolls with cream cheese when I asked them for no cheese, so I had to wait for them to remake my rolls. If you are in Cuenca and want sushi, do yourself a favor and go to Origami down the street, where the fish is of high grade and delicious (for comparison, at Origami we had 2 miso soups, 1 tuna tataki, 1 order of salmon nigiri, 1 order of tuna nigiri, 1 sushi combo comprised of 22 pieces and 2 large beers and spent $60).

Golden Prague Pub in Cuenca is a delightful brewpub that captures the essence of Czech beer culture. The ambiance is relaxed and inviting, with friendly staff who enhance the experience. While the music may not be everyone's cup of tea, the atmosphere remains enjoyable.

Great spot, excellent staff and wide variety of beer. The imperial lager was the highlight of the beers and so was the porter. Potatoe crisps were way SALTY and the bread could be more toasted but it was pleasant.

An interesting cross of sports bar and brew pub, with a family slant. Quite a few TV’s playing the soccer match, a kiddie play area, and a ping pong table. They have a number of craft beers, and I tried the honey lager, which was very good. My wife had a white wine, not too many choices for vino. For dinner, my wife had a pulled pork hamburger, and I had ravioli with ricotta. Both were nicely presented and tasty. For dessert, we had a postre that was a suave bizcocho soaked in chocolate with vanilla ice cream. Totally over the top but very good. It’s an open air sort of place, so if the weather is cool, bring a sweater. There is a small outside seating area.
Mark B — Google review
The name tells the whole story...except it doesn’t. This is a beer hall apparently owned and operated by the eponymous Czech brewery. Cavernous inside, and offering basically four or five different beers on tap of its own production, this place also offers pretty good pub food. I found everything on offer to be of good quality, but neither the beers nor the food amazed me. However, the classic Czech/German beer hall layout inside was a pleasant surprise.
Reginald W — Google review
Huge space with Czech beer and cuisine. I found it a bit less impressive than their pubs in Guayaquil and Galapagos, despite it being the central one. The goulash for example is pork, not beef and is not very good with a lot of pork fat. I went for the lunch menu once and there was only one person doing everything, so everything took ages. Seems the owners are caring about all their other pubs but somehow forgot about their main one.

This restaurant is a great place to go for Indian food. The dishes are delicious, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Prices are very reasonable, and the variety of dishes on the menu is good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good Indian meal.
We loved our meal here, when we asked what could be made vegan the waiter was so helpful in explaining what we could have (which was most the vegetarian options!) and they even made us a vegan garlic naan bread. You can tell each dish is cooked fresh, the flavours were incredible. Would highly recommend to anyone staying in Cuenca to visit this restaurant!

A FOODIE’S DELIGHTFUL FIND OF SOUTH INDIAN CUISINE in Cuenca 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗. *** Indeed, South Indian cooking is much less frequent outside the subcontinent, compared to the more ubiquitous Punjabi North Indian. This place, very unassuming, exudes the delightful flavors of light and tangy curries, fragrant spices, lovely red chilies and dry-curried lamb and chicken 👏👏👏👏👏 plus IndoChinese dishes. (They have additional beef dishes, which are of course not found in traditional Hindu eateries). The menu is rather large, but navigable. 👏Large vegetarian section. 👏Large selections of fish, chicken, lamb and beef WITHOUT coconut milk or creamy yogurts like Punjabi/North Indian. As expected, there is not a Tandoori that is typical Punjabi. 🤗🤗🤗 The Kerala Paratha is very pleasantly slightly gummy for a rice flour bread. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 The Eggplant Masala is a wonderful South Indian twist of the Northern Baingan Bharta. *** chunks of eggplant (aubergines instead of the Asian eggplant) in a VERY LIGHT & TANGY curry sauce…. Lovely slight tamarind flavor. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 Lamb Roast is a most delectable dish of hand-shredded roasted lamb cooked is very fragrant spices. ORDERED MEDIUM HEAT, the red chilies are so moderate of capsicum that lifts up the flavors…..WOW…. 🍺🍺🍺 a surprise is the Ecuadorian lager, Pilsener, pairs so well with food. It cleanses and cools the palate with each gulp, ready for the bite👏👏👏👏👏. THIS IS THE SORT OF EATERY THAT MERITS RETURN VISITS TO SAVOR MORE DISHES 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍. Service is very good. It’s a small cozy eatery (about 20 people capacity), yet quite pleasant 👍.

Excellent curry taste but very less chicken, I have to finish half of my bread with only the curry sauce and no chicken. Also, I ordered 2 items and none of them were available. I was advice for the bread but not the main dish so they just decided for me and served me a different meat! The guy felt sorry but didn’t offer any solution nor commercial gesture.

We were visiting from the USA and had a craving for i Indian food. We found this place while exploring a big festival going on near one of the parks. When we entered the restaurant, there was no other diners, but by the time we left, it was really filling up. The Samosa and the curries were terrific as was the lemon rice. The food was so good that we may come back before we finish our vacation.

This restaurant is a heaven for vegans and vegetarians! They also sell meat dishes. There’s something for everybody! Great prices, great service, great location. The owner speaks good English and has a nice story about the history of this restaurant. I love this place! I recommend you try their food

Great place to eat! We were craving Indian food and this restaurant hit the spot. With delicious curries at a good price you can’t go wrong. The service was good and the host spoke excellent English and Spanish. We enjoyed our dinner and would return if we had more nights here.

Sunrise Cafe is a charming breakfast and lunch spot located just a block away from the condo. It's popular among locals and expats for its delicious and reasonably priced meals. The menu offers a variety of options, including the Cubano breakfast with poached eggs, Cuban black beans, rice, grilled onions, sliced avocado, biscuit, jam, butter, and coffee. The American breakfast features hash browns, bacon, eggs, and a perfectly prepared biscuit.
I love coming here regularly. The staff are the best and the food is such a good deal. They have really good specials each day for lunch and breakfast. Also the food is very filling, I usually still have half my plate left to take home.
Killian L — Google review
Sunrise Cafe was recommended to us by an expat; so we took our kids there. The staff was great and offered us a room because of our kids. I could tell this place was catered mostly to expats because they greeted us in English and the menu was mainly American dishes. There were many expats dining at the time. The food looked great but was just missing seasoning; it tasted blend like food in the US. I would advised the cook to add a little more spices like garlic and herbs to make the taste pop. They have BBQ and cornbread on Saturdays, but I wonder if I’m going to be disappointed due to lack of taste.

Great Sunday brunch! Excellent food. It was a very busy Sunday morning and the restaurant probably had too few servers to accommodate the crunch of people. Service was slow. Didn't get a coffee refill until we were about to leave. Not big on atmosphere but the food makes up for any minor issues.
Cathleen B — Google review
Excellent spot for expats — everyone speaks English and the atmosphere is welcoming. The daily specials are amazing: instead of the usual big pile of rice with a tiny bit of protein you get at some places, you get a generous portion of meat with a big bowl of soup and a side. Fresh-squeezed lemonade is what I order but they have many beverage options, and you even get a small desert with the lunch special. Big portions, great quality, and very affordable. I could honestly eat here every day!

Great place for breakfast and lunch and expat meeting place. The service is excellent and the food is tasty and well priced. Had the Saturday BBQ special today. Absolutely delicious. Service is great as well. I have been doing the Saturday BBQ for several weeks now. Consistently the same great taste.

Bringing the American Diner concept to Cuenca and Ecuador is a laudable idea… BUT THIS PLACE FAILS TO DELIVER MISERABLY👎👎👎👎👎. IT IS OVERRATED for an overall dismal food quality. There are 2 pictorial menus, one for Breakfast and another for lunch. Each picture has a list of ingredients of the food listing. It’s tedious but navigable menus. 👎 Whilst apparently freshly made, the coffee is flavorless. It appears it’s filtered drip Coffee, the WORST WAY TO MAKE COFFEE as it removes all the natural flavors and micronutrients of coffee. 😑😑😑 Paradise Omelette is prettier than it looks. 👍 the Omelette is quite good, the folded stuffing is rich…..BUT 👎👎👎👎👎 the Hash Browns is TASTELESS, lacking even the natural flavor of potatoes… NOTE Ecuador is chuck full of very flavorful varieties of potatoes…. One suspects, this hash browns comes from a pre-processed bag. MORE SERIOUSLY, the Hash Browns is VERY SOGGY. It means it is cooked with a lid on it, which will bring about water condensation that drops into the potatoes…. Hash browns SHOULD be crisp, NEVER soggy if prepared properly. 👎👎👎👎👎 Fish & Chips::: again prettier than it tastes 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 The Fish is a VERY SMALL UNSEASONED PIECE . It is COATED WITH VERY THICK AND VERY OILY TASTELESS BATTER. The batter is supposed to be beer batter, not a hint of it! 👎👎👎👎👎 the Tartar sauce is UNPLEASANTLY SUGAR SWEET WITH AN ARTIFICIAL YELLOWISH COLOR. 👍 the bright spot of this dish is the fresh very well prepared coleslaw The potato fries is also crisp and seasoned… BUT DON’T CALL CHIPS. Chips are fresh rough cuts of potatoes. Here, the fries are the usual strips of almost identical cuts… indicating pre-processed fries. SERVICE HOWEVER IS GOOD. The eatery has vibe of a Diner… unfortunately the food is dismal overall…

Comfortable atmosphere, very very friendly employees and the food was excellent! I had simple fare, two eggs over easy with hash browns and a fresh baked biscuit served with preserves. On Wednesdays for lunch, he makes the most amazing onion rings and coleslaw!

[I was going through all of my G.Maps reviews and was surprised If given Sunrise 4 stars. I must've been cranky, because this place is Excellent. I think I was cranky because I couldn't get food that day, they were so busy. I'll leave my old review, but just know this place is one of my favorites. Cheers]. Good place, good food, lots of gringos. Was going here a lot, my only advice is don't go on Sunday. For the last month I've been going three times a week, but made the mistake of going on a Sunday. Just way too crowded. I figured, well, I'll just get food to go then, and stood there for 20 minutes, and couldn't even order take out. It's kind of frustrating when you go all week, tip well, and Sunday rolls around you can't even get a simple take out order. Just way too busy, but any other day is usually worth it.

Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like El Paraíso Park. Not quite as popular as Mirador de Turi, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

El Paraíso Park, located in Cuenca, is the city's largest and most popular urban park. The well-manicured riverbanks are adorned with seesaws and slides for children to enjoy. Visitors can stroll along Calle Larga, where they will find restaurants, art galleries, and bars.
This park is perfect, peaceful with man made lake and a river running around the park full of beautiful trees, flowers, plants, different kinds of birds are found here. There are benches you can sit to enjoy the view. There are several kiddie play areas, an exercise equipment area, There is a soccer/football field. Several swings, there are vendors that sell snacks, ice creams. There is a juice stand and other easy food shops the open 11am at the center of the park close to the restroom area. There are no napkins/ tissue in the restroom so be sure to bring your own. There are people here running ,jogging, exercising, walking. Lots of lovers found in this park. People eating on the ground while watching the river or lake. Some people having a picnic. Very nice place to unwind, feel the fresh air on your face and hear the running river.

Cuenca’s most popular urban park. The grounds are very well manicured: the lawns mowed smooth, blooming flower beds, trees with good canopies provide shade and are also blooming.😎😎😎 The focal point is man made lake fed by a tributary from the adjacent Rio Tomebamba. The level of the lake control by a loch. 👏👏👏Lots of birds. There’s an attractive clock as well, and several children’s playgrounds. Nice shelters are strategically built around the park.

The biggest park in Cuenca, it is ideal to come and visit with family and spend an amazing day. You can play sports such as soccer and volleyball, do yoga, play in the swings, do a picnic, and many more activities.
Fiorella B — Google review
Beautiful serene, peaceful place! Quite a large park the biggest in Quenca if not mistaken. Pet friendly and eco conscious with a program where you can take veggie scraps and yard waste in return for free compost- win-win!
G G — Google review
Parque Paraíso just east of the historic center of Cuenca, and situated between the two beautiful central rivers of the city, the Tomebamba and the Yanuncay, has a little bit of something for everybody. It has a lovely lake with ducks and other waterfowl for children and adults alike, playground equipment, beautiful old trees, broad grassy areas, exercise equipment for children and adults alike, and much much more. Expansive enough to “stretch out” and lose yourself in its peacefulness, it is nonetheless not so wild that one, other than a small child, would get lost. A great addition, if not a cornerstone to the city’s extensive system of beautifully maintained parks.

Pumapungo Museum and Archaeological Park in Cuenca offers a comprehensive exploration of the region's indigenous heritage. The museum features indoor exhibits showcasing archaeological artifacts, reconstructed indigenous dwellings, and ceremonial items that provide insight into the daily lives and customs of Cuenca's ancestral inhabitants.
A surprisingly good experience. The park and its ruins are small, but they have been recently trying to showcase the indigenous community and the Incan ruins pretty well. I was pleasantly surprised.

A very nice museum with exhibits mainly covering the original people of Cuenca and history of the Inkas and the Spanish. There are also exhibits on the various native people through the country. The museum grounds are located on ancient ruins with a large park with nature, llamas and other exhibits. I highly recommend this interesting museum when in Cuenca.
JMQZ — Google review
I really like how they set up the inside, with several traditional huts or homes of the natives. Unfortunately there was only one section with good English translations, but I could translate with my phone. I was disappointed that the outside architectural ruins had no explanations. They should really put something there to make it more meaningful to us!

Nice museum with few exhibitions to customers. I was expecting to know more about ecuatorian history. It has a beautiful view of the city. It could be more attractive for tourists
Cecilia Q — Google review
We were greeted warmly and encouraged to sign in by sharing demographic information through an easy-to-follow kiosk. The museum is clearly interested in knowing which countries visitors represent and whether they belong to minority populations like LGBTQ. A thoughtful touch. Oddly, though, they didn’t seem equally interested in receiving feedback from visitors. I would’ve happily taken time at a kiosk to share everything I appreciated—and there’s quite a lot to like—along with suggestions for improving the visitor experience. The museum features both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Among the permanent exhibits are: Sala Nacional de Etnografía Sala de Arqueología: Pumapunku, Mundos de la Memoria Current temporary exhibits included: Ritualidades y Espiritualidades Textiles del Ecuador Hacienda Azuaya y Crianza The ethnography room made a point of stating that curators consulted with Indigenous communities to ensure respectful, culturally accurate presentations. However, I didn’t see much that distinguished it from typical ethnographic displays elsewhere. Two things in particular stood out as problematic: 1. Most artifacts lacked specific labeling. Instead of detailed descriptions, we were given vague summaries. 2. The human models—particularly those representing African-Ecuadorians and Indigenous people—were jarringly unnatural and grotesque. It felt like a missed opportunity to offer dignity through thoughtful representation. One of the strongest parts of the museum was the exhibit on the history of Cuenca and its surrounding regions, tracing human habitation back to 9000 BCE. The timeline was well done—clear and detailed—and included bold claims I hadn’t encountered before. For example, it suggested that maize was first hybridized in the Ecuadorian Andes around 9000 BCE. I’d always understood the origins of corn to be in what is now Mexico, so this caught my attention. Similarly strong claims were made about chocolate. The museum seems to be involved in original research, but it was difficult to tell what was well-substantiated and what was speculative. Another fascinating, if unsettling, area featured a collection of nearly 10 shrunken heads. The explanatory panels made an effort to place these artifacts in their cultural and spiritual context—ritual practices tied to restoring balance in a community. The final text noted that the practice is now banned in Ecuador. While many visitors were fascinated by the detailed preservation of the heads, I found it deeply unsettling. Several people wondered aloud, “How did they shrink the heads?” If you’re curious about that, you’ll need to ask Google or ChatGPT. By contrast, the temporary exhibits were excellent—well-curated, rich in detail, and socially relevant. Displays addressed issues like legal and illegal adoption, gender-based violence, and addiction. These exhibitions did more than inform; they invited reflection and response. And then there are the outdoor spaces. Stunning. A breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively. You’ll find beautifully kept gardens, paths that weave past archaeological remains, and views of Inca terraces towering above the landscape. There’s also a remarkable collection of live birds, many of them rescues. Parrots, raptors, and other native species are housed in spacious, thoughtful enclosures, offering an intimate and often moving experience of Ecuador’s biodiversity. These grounds alone are worth the visit. In short: Museo Pumapungo is a fascinating mix of the excellent and the uneven. With more detailed labeling, improved representations in the ethnography section, and ways for visitors to share feedback, it could become a truly world-class museum. Still, I’m very glad we went.

Nestled in the heart of Cuenca's Historic Center, Plaza de las Flores is a picturesque square renowned for its vibrant flower market. Beautiful. And a wide range of fresh cut flowers and plants for the home.

Central Cuenca’s flower market on a small square in front of the Iglesia de Carmen Asunción, which cannot / must not be mistaken for the larger Cuenca Cathedral with the blue domes. — Many of photos posted here are for the cathedral and must be deleted. The flower square is a Cuenca institution. It’s radiant floral colors brighten the square even in cloudy/ rainy day.😎😎😎. The fragrance of roses are very distinctly pleasant👏👏👏. This is simply a great small place to just admire all the flowers and be immersed in the colors!!!

Small but colourful with a dazzling assortment of flowers available at very reasonable prices. Example, my Wife wanted roses, we asked how much for a bunch (1 Dozen) the lady said $5.00 USD. We paid, brought them home, opened the package and there were 2 dozen roses there. I will get my wife roses every day at these prices. Worth a visit if you're in Cuenca, just for the experience.

The Old Cathedral of Cuenca, also known as El Sagrario, is a historic Catholic temple dating back to the 16th century. Originally built in 1557, the same year the city was founded, it was later elevated to cathedral status in 1787. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing religious artwork. The cathedral holds significant historical importance, having been visited by the French Geodesic Mission in the 1700s for scientific exploration.
Great place to come and contemplate Cuenca's history and worship. There are some beautiful paintings and carvings, and most displays have English translations. You can also walk down into two crypts, now empty.

Excellent place to explore and learn a out the Old cathedral. Walking inside was an experience that's worth the visit. You can also climb the stairs to the top of the observation level. Family friendly atmosphere with a wonderful view of the Park and El Centro. Definitely recommend while in Cuenca Ecuador.

I highly recommend the $3 tour inside the Old Cathedral. My tour guide presented fascinating information not only about the history of the cathedral but also interesting information about Cuenca. Through the admittance fee you’ll gain access to places most people wouldn’t think about. Enjoy walking up the spiral staircase to see the pipe organ up close or walk below to discover where many church members found their resting place starting back in the late 1500s. This church is often overlooked because of the newer and bigger cathedral across the street. But don’t miss this wonderful tour. And don’t forget to tip your tour guide.

On one side of the square, you'll find an older white cathedral from Spanish colonial times. It is said that many of the stones within the church's foundation were taken from the Cañari/Incan ruins nearby - before people realized they were destroying ancient history. The Antigua Cathedral is now a small museum, which costs a couple dollars to enter. They also host concerts, including free symphony concerts by the University. Parque San Sebastián is a charming green plaza adorned with palm trees, flower beds, and a central fountain. The park's construction dates back to the 19th century and it serves as a serene retreat amidst the bustling downtown of Quenca.
Peaceful park , lots of food, and shops. Ramen is great and the gourmet shop has a lot of US products. Nice place to just sit and take it all in.

It’s an urban park by the San Sebastián Church on one end and the Cuenca MOMA on the other. There are benches to rest one’s weary legs. An attraction of the square seems to be the flock of pigeons that don’t fly away, awaiting for people to feed them. It looks very quiet, few trees provide canopy BUT there’s noticeable complete absence of flowers or flower beds. There’s a fountain but there’s no water. As such, the square looks very drab. The whole area is paved with hard wearing titles, which makes the place heat up under an intense sun.

Jodoco Belgian Bistro is a charming spot known for its locally brewed Belgian beers, including double, triple, and quadruple varieties. The menu offers a diverse selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that are tasty but on the pricier side. In addition to the delicious beer, there's also a great variety of local craft beers and imports available. Visitors can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere while savoring authentic Belgian-style beers with a nice color and flavorful balance of malt and hops.
Fantastic spot. Relaxed, clean, service was excellent, not too crowded. Beer selection is second to none in Cuenca. Had a filet mignon and a couple of sides recently, and it was cooked to perfection. I've gone there many times, and it's always excellent.

Craft beers are really Belgian taste. Definitely a master piece here in Cuenca. However, attention is not the best, employees could be more polite and explain the experience of tasting really good beer. Additionally, they could be more polite, service is cold and empty, could improve. Atmosphere is not bad, maybe something more is missing because outside it looks like any other beer bar from around, but is not. French fries are good enough.

Great place for tapas or a sit down meal. Nice selection of Crafted cervezas (beer) with a full menu of lunch or dinner 🍽️. Enjoy tapas while sitting outside or go inside for a sit down meal with friends or family. Good table side service - but outside of tapas be prepared to enjoy the company as entrees come out when they're ready, maybe not when you're ready for them Enjoy yourself while you wait with good company and a pint of craft beer.

As a Belgian myself, I must say that the stoofvlees with fries were really good. A little side salad would have been beneficial though. We also ordered the frikandel aka curryworst special, but that one didn’t really taste like it should. It was quite dry and had a different texture. I also advise the restaurant to have real Belgian mayonaise and ketchup to accompany the dishes, especially for the fries and frikandel special. Also we think that vol au vent should be re-added to the menu, it’s a real Belgian classic! Service was top!

I ordered a fish burger and two dark beers with cherries. The beers were very good, they are expensive but you get what you paid for. The fish burger was good but nothing special in order to deserve a five star.

Great Lunch directly on Parque Calderon. The owner, Don Colon has a wonderful personality and operates a terrific restaurant. They have daily specials and there is indoor and outdoor seating. It is located directly next to the "new catherdral" in Parque Calderon. We had lunch here a number of times during our stay in Cuenca and the food never disappointed.

Great service and incredible location. Many items to choose from for prices that are considered normal in Ecuador. The food quality is above par and the owner is also the chef. Expect great views and great portiins. Highly recommended!

Since 2018 I've been to this restaurant for the view. Good for people watching. The food is decent, the service is excruciatingly slow and the owner "Don" is rude. He will ask you a question but he's only interested in what he wants and then he walks away without conversation. If not for the awesome view he wouldn't be able to operate unless he changes his attitude.

Great service! Delicious food! Staffs speaks in fluent English! The set lunch only cost 4us per head!!!

Hotel Santa Lucia - Cuenca Ecuador

Hotel Santa Lucia is an elegant lodging option located in the heart of Cuenca's historic district. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century mansion, this charming hotel offers a nostalgic ambiance and luxurious accommodations, making it an ideal choice for couples seeking a romantic getaway. With colonial architecture and modern amenities, guests can enjoy a cozy and comfortable stay while experiencing Cuencan heritage. The hotel features two restaurants, a lounge, free parking, and friendly staff ready to provide unparalleled hospitality.
Julian was an amazing host at the restaurant, and Doña Carmita always had a smile and asked how we were doing. In general, all the front desk and housekeeping were amazing. Very friendly. Help us in anything that we need. The hotel is near everything. Walking distance for all the stores and restaurants and shops. Had a parking as not as close but very convenience. The breakfast was excellent. A little of everything and the food at the restaurant was great!

Spent 3 weeks traveling throughout Ecuador and this hotel was the worst experience we had. We enjoyed all the others, from 5 star hotels to remote lodges, all were fantastic and memorable. I should have read and believed the lower end reviews on this hotel. Our room was essentially a closet next to the kitchen with no ventilation, faint odor of mildew and a continuous stream of banging pots and pans until late into the night. There is no amount of paint, “modern” accessories or posh bath products that can disguise capitalism at its worst. This hotel is resting on long ago accolades. Service was poor bordering on hostile, food was adequate and spectacularly overpriced. Do yourself a favor and find another place to stay. We had a 4 night reservation and left after one night. If you plan on going anyway and not leaning into this review then please stay far, far away from ANY room on the first floor.

My real gripe is with the restaurant. You cannot fill the wall with French plaque accomplishments and serve subpar food. The risotto was terrible. Ecuador has excellent chocolate options, and some restaurants take pride in providing information on which brand of cacao they are using. We ordered two hot cups of coco and were really surprised to get them -in the main restaurant- from an automatic powder-and-water machine. This shouldn't even been charged. Nine dollars for this is preposterous! Don't even get me started with the room shower and toilet.

The age of the building is charming and makes it beautiful and it’s also the only thing that holds back the rooms from getting 5 stars. Mostly the shower but still great.

Loved this hotel. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are very clean and very comfortable. The breakfast is excellent, good portion fresh and high quality. The location is perfect too.. totally recommend

My favorite place to stay in Cuenca. Only thing that’s regular is breakfast. Soooo close to everything!
Jorge C — Google review
Very cool building with great sitting areas, nice rooms..clean, comfortable and sizeable. Location could not be better! Slhreat restaurant on site. About 20 rooms so quaint and quiet. Nice breakfast buffet.
Rebecca C — Google review
Very close to downtown. A quiet old house with clean and charming rooms. The breakfast is optional for $6.50 but it’s worth it. Not fancy but is a good start (coffee, fresh juice, yogurt with fruit and granola, omelets, and bread). The staff is very friendly and helpful. If you don’t have knee problems I suggest to ask for the rooms on the second floor. Otherwise the rooms on the grounds are also nice.

Tres Estrellas is a family-run restaurant in Cuenca, Ecuador, known for serving cuy (guinea pig), a local specialty. Established since 1952, it has become a favorite among both locals and visitors. The restaurant offers traditional dishes like mote pillo along with the famous guinea pig. It's located on Calle Larga and provides excellent service in a comfortable setting.
Excellently prepared Cuy, juicy and crispy, we are glad that we followed the recommendation to go to this restaurant
Alan H — Google review
Tres Estrella more than a restaurant is a unique Cuenca experience. I went there for the Guinea pig (or cuy or cuis as they know it in South America). The cuy was okay although there was little meat to it. However, the overall experience was priceless, including the cooking of the cuy and the restaurant decor. Even if you are not yet ready to eat the cuy, I would recommend to stop by Tres Estrellas and experience the place.
Jorge P — Google review
If you're in Cuenca, this is the place to try guinea pig. The place oozes charm, it's packed with locals, and every single local who heard I was going here, or had been here, talked about how it's the absolute best place to get guinea pig. Be aware, it takes an hour to prepare a guinea pig, but if you want, you can reserve one ahead.

Excellent food, vibes, and service! We got the fresh juice, lomo fino de res, coffee, and locro de papas. Everything was so good! Great prices as well. They take credit card which is a plus. Will be returning. Food was so good, I ate it before taking a photo
Aksa — Google review
Small portions that don't justify the price; it looks like they're serving it with regret, as if they're afraid of running out of food
Jean P — Google review
Our guide reccommended us this restaurant. He comes here with his family to eat traditional guinea pig. I have to say it was very tasty, not to compare with any other meat. This restaurant is popular with locals so it is well wort a visit for authentic local food. The ambiente is very nice with lots of old stuff on the walls
Michi S — Google review
The "cuy" here is delicious, and the decor is very interesting, but getting a table can be tough especially during weekends and for large groups, I usually order to go , I call it my happy meal as they pack everything in a nice box. Also there is no parking especially when there are events at the nearby theater.
Truly G — Google review
This is the only place the Guinea pig never fails, is always juicy and well cooked, plus al their dishes are delicious.
