This was a nice hostel, in a good location. Check in and out was easy, receptionist was
kind and welcoming! The wooden bunks/pods
were comfy, I was in a lower one, and there wasn't really any airflow with the curtain closed. It was a bit dusty in there as well. The shower was nice and hot, you have to press the button every 10 seconds but it wasn't too much of an inconvenience & probably helps save water too!
A very new hostel, I think, as of 2024. I was pleased to find everything very clean, and the smell of new wood still upon the bunks. Having worked at a couple hostels and having set them up, I know a little of what goes into making them, and I think this hostel has been a labor of love. The veneer on everything has the polish of newness, but in many places there are design flaws evident, such as the gap in the shower doors which gets everything outside them wet. Many spaces in this hostel seem just a little too small to be comfortable. Hallways, showers, bathrooms. There’s not much room to turn around in. The basement common area, however, is spacious. It includes a kitchen, bathrooms, and generous sitting area. The design is modish and there are a couple pieces of very nice furniture. Unfortunately, it’s all closed from 11pm to 7am so there is no space here for those who work at night. I stayed only one night so I may not have a broad experience of the hostel, but the thing which I found the most incomprehensible was the annoying rap song that was playing on high volume on repeat the entire time throughout the common area, with no option of volume control, only insistent repetition. There was locker space available in-room, and breakfast available for a price. Certainly a place one feels secure, and good value for the price.
So, let's be real. This was the cheapest accomodation that I could find. So, if you are travelling on a budget, this place probably came up. It's a double edged sword all round. The first thing to point out is that the service is fantatstic and the facilities well equipped. It had a large functioning kitchen and all the usual perks like an abundance of free pasta and rice. The space is kept clean and there is a fun little common area that keeps on letting Girl's Aloud's song "sound of the underground" pop into my head. The staff is friendly and can speak english.
The location is where it starts to get a bit wonky. Yes, it is very easily accessible from the train station. But I will also say that I have yet to struggle getting anywhere in Montpellier with public transport so you could probably just have taken a tram or a bus to another area. But ok, it's not difficult to find. But what is also not difficult to find is the nightclub right outside it. Hostel sleeping always comes with odd snore and person kicking a chair in the middle of the night. This place comes with bass and drunk couples arguing at 4 in the morning. (The club, la panama, opens at 12am and closes at around 6am ladies and gents). Our room, very cramped but clean, overlooked the club and boy. Two nights of music I don't even like.
Speaking about the rooms, I also have to point out, it's cramped. I stayed in the 8 sleeper, females only, and when we were all there struggling to decide where our bags, ourselves and our towels needed to be, it was rough. My roommates were still conscientious but at the end of the day, we all start to feel claustrophobic in our coffin like beds and stuffy atmosphere. And the rooms are not well ventilated. They do have AC, but I had the top, middle bunk of 8 and I never felt so much as a breeze. The second night I tried to ramp the AC all the way up to max and it still wasn't enough to infiltrate my bunk. I should also add, I am tall and it was quite an act to get in and out of my bed. I hate to be blunt. Don't choose this if you have a high BMI. Some of the beds require you to squeeze into a passageway medieval pheastants had to crawl through.
All and all though, I left with fond memories and the knowledge that I could not afford any better. The sad thing is that, I have paid less for more. More space, more air, more silence. But, I've also had worse.
