Promenade

Scenic Walking Areas
Promenade du Peyrou, also known as the Royal Square of Peyrou, is a picturesque city square in Montpellier. It features an impressive equestrian statue of Louis XIV and offers stunning views of the city and the Arc de Triomphe. The area includes a castle-like building with Corinthian pillars designed by Henri Pitot, as well as a well-preserved Roman aqueduct.
Come for the view! Enjoy your walk and see this park; you can overlook the aqueduct at the pavilion at its eastern end. Went there early afternoon and easily found a place to sit and relax a bit. It’s a traditional park in France, don’t expect flowers but more pavement and a good view across statue towards church and city.

Walking from the place comédie, you need to go to the side of this place to enter. Very beautiful place with few people, and the view is also amazing.
S.R. W — Google review
A great spot for a short walk with a beautiful panoramic view of the city. The historic architecture adds a lot of charm, and it's a nice place to relax and do some people-watching. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Montpellier.
Deniz A — Google review
My favorite spot in Montpellier. It feels like a breath of fresh air. It is clean, has trees, and a beautiful view days and night. I went there a few times during my stay.
Lou P — Google review
This is a great place to walk around in to see some great views and some old architecture! I like running around the perimeter because there is decent shade and a good amount of space to avoid folks when running. They have some pretty cool free events here too. Its beautiful during sunset.
Cin W — Google review
Nice spot for a walk or a chill. Big trees provide a bit of a shadow on a hot day. Very calm
Magdalena Ś — Google review
Nice walk in a very cool and spacious space. I enjoyed the play of light on the elements. If you like photography on a sunny day, the shadows are re pretty intense and interesting. The area around it is also green so plenty of room to rest.

Historical landmark
Place de la Comédie is a spacious pedestrian plaza surrounded by historic buildings, offering outdoor cafe seating and street performances. The area boasts grand art nouveau architecture reminiscent of Paris, alongside medieval structures dating back to the 1500s and 1600s. Just a short distance away, modern architectural marvels like L'Arbre Blanc and Philippe Starck Cloud provide a striking contrast.
Well we arrived in Montpellier on the 26/06/25 first impressions were wow what’s a beautiful place . The buildings within the Place de la Comédie are just stunning the detail in the stone work is incredible. There’s a great vibe about this place . There’s lots of restaurants around the huge square . It’s a must to visit . There’s ample car parking at the underground car parks . This won’t be the last time we visit Montpelier there’s so much more to see .

Fantastic place and very busy, it’s gives you a lovely atmosphere of the location and town A very busy hub with a large amount of restaurants and food places. We went on a Sunday evening which was still very busy but a lot of places where closing for the end of the day around 10pm so something to bear in mind.

Place de la Comédie is the beating heart of Montpellier. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, with the Opéra Comédie and the Three Graces fountain as focal points. Always full of energy, from morning coffee crowds to evening strolls, and well-connected with the city’s tram lines. A perfect place to start exploring the old town or just to sit and people-watch.
Adriano S — Google review
What an amazing place! You will not miss it when you visit Montpellier. The architecture, the music, and the atmosphere, everything seemed so harmonious and perfect.

Such a vibrant and magical square! The views were stunning, and the atmosphere was full of life. Street artists were playing music, adding so much charm to the experience. A perfect spot to relax, people-watch, and feel the heart of Montpellier.

Beautiful place and just 5 minutes walk to train station. Trams are also next to it. Near by water fountain and area was good for pictures.

A very lively part ot Montpellier at all time, with excellent buskers near the fountain, just next to large outside seatings of fancy hidtoric cafés and Restaurants. The very diverse crowd passing by in all sort of transport device is a treat. It is worth stopping, and watching the never ending flow.

Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
Gardens
Nestled in the heart of Montpellier, France, the Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier is a captivating botanical garden that dates back to 1593. Established under the reign of King Henri IV, this historic site was initially designed for studying medicinal plants and remains closely linked to the esteemed University of Montpellier. Spanning nearly five hectares, it boasts an impressive collection of over 2,600 plant species from around the globe—ranging from medicinal herbs to exotic blooms.
Beautiful free public park with great trees, duck ponds, playgrounds and gardens. Bring a picnic or have lunch at the cafe. There are even several large sequoias! Nice job Bordeaux!
Geof A — Google review
One of the best park to visit if you are in Montpellier. The park is completely free to access, but please remember walking on the grass and having picnics and dogs and bicycles are not allowed.
Heeman — Google review
Dry. In serious need of maintenance. It might be the time of year, but the whole place was really dry and the plants looked like they were on the brink of death. The whole garden really looked like it needed a great deal of maintenance, from general grass cutting and weeding, to repairing concrete and fixing broken watering systems. All in all, unfortunately I would say it’s not really worth the time in Montpellier.
Austen U — Google review
Beautiful park in the centre of the city of Montpellier. A lot of different plants all around the world. Very well maintained park. Orangery with exotic plants. Very nice place to walk around. Very romantic and quiet. I highly recommend visiting this park while you are in Montpellier on holiday. Free entry.
Vlamis — Google review
A peaceful and charming garden — perfect if you're looking for a calm day to unwind or read a book. It's not overly manicured, which gives it a relaxed, natural vibe. Great for a quiet break from the city.
Deniz A — Google review
The gardens are free to enter. Plenty of shade on a hot summer day in August. Beautifully landscaped, although many of the plants had finished blooming at this time of year and looked withered. I've visited much nicer botanical gardens, but this one is still worth a visit and easily combined with other sights in beautiful Montpellier!
Joris V — Google review
Very cool garden in Montpellier with some unique areas that aren’t commonly seen in public gardens (such as a toxic plants sub area within). They also have a desert conditions greenhouse which is often open to the environment since this is a drier part of France. Note: Google is asking me if I should buy tickets in advance, this garden is free and open to public access. The guardhouse is just for security purposes.

Catholic cathedral
Cathedral
Montpellier Cathedral, also known as Cathedrale Saint-Pierre de Montpellier, is a Gothic-style cathedral located in the heart of Montpellier, France. The exterior showcases a mix of neoclassical and Romanesque architecture, with twin conical pillars at the entrance and a seven-storey Romanesque bell tower dating back to the 11th century.
A beautiful and well-maintained cathedral. Could easily spend more than an hour there. Be aware that they are closed for lunch. If you have time you should visit Montpellier's Faculty of Medicine which is the oldest practicing medical school in the world.
Gladys H — Google review
The cathedral was absolutely beautiful — the way the light filtered through created such a peaceful and powerful atmosphere. I genuinely felt the energy of the place. One of the highlights for me was the stunning organ, which was not only visually impressive but added to the sacred, timeless feeling of the church. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates architecture, spirituality, or just a moment of calm in the city.
Deniz A — Google review
Roman catholic church was a monastery and was rebuilt in the 17th century. A beautiful place and a national monument in Montpellier.
S.R. W — Google review
Perfectly lovely Sunday mass. Sunlight streaming through the stained glass. The organ is felt through your heart.
Diane L — Google review
Amazing internal space with some of the most spectacular colored windows we have seen. The outside is remarkable too.
R S — Google review
A beautiful example of a southern gothic style Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Peter, one of Jesus’ twelve apostles.
Edward G — Google review
Beautiful but only saw the outside.
Amanda K — Google review
It can be reached by 10-15 minutes walk from Place de la Comédie, it was a beautiful church from the outside. The main door is closed, but the huge pillar was very imposing. It is a good photo ops, as not many tourists venture here. This is a really old Gothic church with a lot of history built back in the 14th century. Try to visit here when exploring Montpellier, as it is impressive and worth visiting once.

I really enjoyed the photo exhibition on the Spanish Civil War by Antoni Campana. Recommended!
Jessica J — Google review
Incredible free art centre showcasing important work. The exhibit when I visited was of Antoni Campaña, a Spanish photographer who covered the Spanish Civil War and the following years under the Franco regime. Staff were helpful and friendly
Camden F — Google review
Beautiful public photo exhibit space. All their shows are wonderfully curated and free to the public year round. A definite plus for anyone who truly enjoys photography. A bonus for living here.
Keith P — Google review
Really enjoyed the photography gallery, it was very clean, had a video/interview with the artist to get more information about her work and in a very nice area. Arrived by tram and although up some steep stairs it was about 5 minutes away. Staff were lovely and spoke great English. Would definitely recommend.
Gabriella A — Google review
We saw two excellent exhibitions here for free. The building is spacious and had air-conditioning, which was crucial on the hot August day that we visited. At the time we visited they were presenting two photo exhibitions related to Hitler and the Jewish Ghettos. The material was obviously heavy and largely depressing, but the presentation was very good and the supplementary information was very interesting.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Montpellier Zoological Park, established in 1964 on the historic estate of Henri de Lunaret, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. With over 1100 animals from 128 species, including lions and giraffes, the zoo sits adjacent to a nature reserve along the Lez River. The lush Amazonian greenhouse, La Serre Amazonienne, offers an immersive experience with diverse plant life.
Not sure what to expect after the reviews, but the park suprised me. I would recommend going there. First of all, it has free parking and entrance! The areas for the animals are large (which is a good thing) so sometimes you need to search for them. The park is 50/50 animals and a walk area. But all well maintained. Bring drinks/water for sure, and some snacks/food. Almost everywhere you can walk in the shade, and the distance you can decide yourself following different routes.
Vincenzo — Google review
I am not a fan of zoos or aquariums, but this place felt like a true jungle for the animals. It is so peaceful and nice. Free of charge and free small parking lot in front. The walk is long but worth it!
Ana G — Google review
Free zoo! Decent variety of animals and a lovely walk through the park itself with plenty of free water refilling spots. The giraffes were a favourite. Deducting a star as parking was difficult (we had to find a side street to park at)
Paul E — Google review
hello y’all ? How you going. Today i visit the Zoo of Montpellier. It’s completely FREE to visit the park. No need to buy a ticket. It is a great & peaceful zoo to visit alone or with families / friends. Easy to find with transport. Lot of species, pretty vast area. Keep attention with your wastes every time, and respect the park. It’s a healing center too for the animals so keep focus on respect this place . Thanks you and enjoy. I post regularly on Instagram some new discover, you could follow me here. @mr.chacal
Mr C — Google review
More a big park with some animals than an actual zoo. Free entrance, so we can’t complain.
Marc W — Google review
A great place to spend a few hours surrounded by nature. The Montpellier Zoo has a wide variety of animals and large, well kept enclosures. It’s a fun and educational activity for all ages, perfect for a relaxing walk and some quiet time outdoors. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Olteanu A — Google review
For a 'free' venue it's a wonderful place to visit. The animals are limited in numbers. But appear to be well looked after. Be aware that there is no availability for refreshment in the park. There are water fountains located within the park but nothing else. A good way to spend a couple of hours wandering around the park.
Dave L — Google review
Hot and lots of animals not out or closed off enclosures. But free (even some on street parking nearby for free too if you're lucky like we were!) and no complaints here. Plenty of picnic tables and water taps to refill water bottles whilst your there. We enjoyed our couple of hours there.

Loovely place, don't miss out on the regular market/festival that is held here every Friday throughout the summer. An incredible atmosphere, the most striking thing for a Scandinavian like me is that everyone walks around with each their (real glass!) small wine glass and just enjoy life. There's a wide variety of food at the stands, crepes, seafood, grill, international, ham, etc. Wine is a given. And of course live music here and there. All in all an impressive set up and I highly recommend it.

The Faculty of Medicine has a long and illustrious history, dating back to 1220. It is one of the oldest medical schools in the Western world, and still functions today. The college is steeped in history, with its beautiful building located on one of Montpellier's most historic streets. Hundreds of students now make use of its facilities every day.
A nice historic place created in 1220, the oldest university in the world related to medicine. A beautiful building with views from the back of the university overlooking the cathedral.. it has an anatomical theater at the back and some museum exhibits. It is well worth a visit, especially if visiting the cathedral next door, I stumbled on this whilst I was waiting for the cathedral to open in the afternoon. I was not disappointed with this historic building

Stretching gracefully across the city, it's a beautiful place for a scenic walk or photo stop. The nearby Promenade du Peyrou provides a great view of the aqueduct, especially at sunset. It's well-maintained, easily accessible, and adds a unique charm to the city's landscape. Definitely worth a visit for architecture and history lovers!

La Panacée is a vibrant contemporary art space in Montpellier, offering interactive exhibitions and a bustling eatery. The museum hosts various events throughout the year, making it a popular destination for art enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy a delightful Sunday brunch featuring an array of sweet and savory dishes, complemented by hot drinks and fruit juice. On sunny days, guests can relax on the charming patio while savoring their meal.
My favourite space in Montpellier. The food is amazing and fresh. It’s the perfect spot to read or study for a couple of hours. And the museum has really good and interesting artists on display everytime im there.

I’d say this place is worth a visit, it’s free to enter too. The art is very interesting and something different to see. Modern art isn’t always for everyone but if you’re creative definitely check it out! There is a beautiful terrace courtyard where you can have drinks and food which looks very appealing, but I didn’t sample it.

Small but interesting exhibition and it's free entry. There is a cafe with some food and beverages available with indoor and outdoor seating.

We were here on a Sunday in october. Closed. You would have to look very closely on the website to know this. Reason given, the changing of exposition. Come on, you don't close three days in a row for this. Lazy snobs.

Quite quirky place. There is small art exhibition centre where known artists can show off their work. Whilst we were there we saw works by an American called Popeye. Can't really hope to really explain what he was trying to say but seemed quite deep! There is also a cafe attached as well as an indoor courtyard where you can sit on benches and enjoy the sunshine. Quite close to the centre, you can easily get there in 10 minutes or less from Place de la Comédie.

Cool place with interesting people! Nice drinks too! I really enjoy the language exchange on Wednesdays!

It's not that interesting for smaller kids. They have a fun little "treasure hunt" for the kiddos, but it's still better to go with teenagers and older...

The place is free, or at least it was on the weekend I visited it. Great spaces for art exhibitions. The art exhibitions are truly contemporary, a lot of different art genres are presented, paintings, photography, video and audio, nudes, sex content. Truly contemporary, not super large, but large enough to spend around an hour there, plus you can have a coffee, drink, cake etc. and also work on your laptop in the café inside of La Panacée, which is also very nice.

Carré Sainte Anne is a captivating cultural space located in the neighborhood of Sainte-Anne, Montpellier. Housed in a 19th-century Neo-Gothic church, this cavernous venue offers over 600m2 of exhibition space for contemporary art displays by French and international artists. Despite its unassuming exterior, the interior has been transformed into a modern gallery that hosts frequent exhibitions, creating an intriguing contrast with its historical architecture.

This place was so cool. This gothic church turned art gallery was wonderfully unique. Plus it's free so it is definitely worth a visit. They've preserved a lot of the church structure and the middle is a big open space for all different types of art exhibitions. The one I went to was very cool by L'Artiste JR which included a big beautiful tree in the middle and so many different hand scans hanging from the ceiling and from the branches of the trees as leaves. I would highly recommend coming here if you are visiting the city.

Given the fact that this a place for french fries (frites), these were actually decent, no salt at all but this is preference. The real issue was with the croquette à la Crevette (5.50€). Not sure if these are frozen pre-done products, but the quality was horrible. Sauce in side is like an unflavored white creme with the most small and tasteless shrimp. As shown in the photos. If you are going to buy overpriced french fries, sure go for it. Do avoid the other products as they are tasteless and overpriced.

The ambiance here is amazing, plenty of variety choices. You get everything from Asian, seafood, pizza, and more! Plenty of bars and it’s buzzing. Expect a crowd during peak hours and hard to find places to seat. There are also other sections aside from the hall itself, such as restaurants with exterior seatings along the riverside. Place is however a little hard to access from public transport. It’s a 10 min walk from the nearest tram stop, Pablo Picasso. But with a car, they have a large parking. Highly recommend this charming venue with your friends for a nice time.

The Fountain of the Three Graces is a renowned landmark in Montpellier, located at Palace de la Comedie. Crafted by Etienne d Antoine in 1790, it showcases a striking sculpture of the Three Graces and cherub depictions on its moss-covered base. This fountain serves as a popular meeting point and symbolizes Greek mythology's Aglaea, Thalia, and Euphrosyne.

Nestled in the vibrant Beaux-Arts district, the Irish Tavern stands as Montpellier's oldest pub, exuding a warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of traditional British pubs. This beloved spot is not just about history; it buzzes with life through live music, sports screenings, and an array of games like darts and billiards. Patrons rave about the delicious food—especially the tapas—and appreciate that special vegan options are available upon request.
I wished they would be open every day. They have lovely live music, the staff is amazing, the food is prepared with a lot of love as well. They made some specials for us, because we're vegan. The cocktail menu is just as fun, and especially the mixed rums… a gem! In terms of price and quality, it’s super profitable and above all good. Thank you for the little weekend concerts and especially the atmosphere conveyed in addition to the decor that gives the bar its name. Piracy is therefore never over. Pine Tower Square, also known as La Tour des Pins, is a well-preserved medieval tower dating back to the thirteenth century. The site features historical plaques in both French and Occitan, offering insight into the region's linguistic heritage. Nestled behind the tower is a charming public garden adorned with colorful plants and fruit-bearing trees, providing a serene retreat for visitors.
Lovely public park, great to see of you're around the area. It has colorful plants with flowers and fruits, and some benches to sit down and relax. Dogs are allowed inside on a leash.

La Tour des Pins is a medieval tower that was built during the thirteenth century and is very well preserved more than 700 years later. Behind the tower is a very good looking pubic garden. But what makes the tower particularly interesting are historical plaques in French and Occitan, the original language of the region.

Athletic Fitness Club in Montpellier offers a bright and clean space with a variety of modern machines for workouts. The gym has a pleasant atmosphere, with friendly coaches available to offer advice and create a welcoming environment. It's recommended to visit in the morning for a quieter session, as it tends to get busier in the evenings, especially with students. Members can also track their progress using the gym's app.
Top class gym. A great range of modern connected machines and space to do floor work too. You can monitor your progress using their app. A nice airy feel inside thanks to window walls and good air con. Max does all he can to make members feel at home creating a relaxed welcoming atmosphere. Having visited most gyms in Montpellier I consider this place the best and recommend it without hesitation!

(Translated by Google) Shocked by this place!!! The staff is too noisy, yes yes the staff! already that they do not enforce silence (except a few including the dyslexic person who does their job well) they also participate in these noises, and how many times I hear them playing online games behind their screens! More particularly the person with glasses in the room in front of the escalators, he came once with lots of croissants to eat at his workplace (except they told us that food is prohibited in these places) and didn't tell me don't let them work because they speak too loudly! monumental disrespect! I recommend a superior to come and supervise a few times because as they do not supervise they do as they please and too much overflow!! In addition, it is the only media library that systematically searches your bags at the entrance by overstaffed security personnel, which feels like entering a bank safe! Ultimately entering a noisy place where the rules of decorum are not even applied by the staff themselves! For their work, most of the employees (except a few including the dyslexic) should not even be paid half a minimum wage, because with the little that their work demands they respect nothing and are sometimes often much noisier in chatting among themselves that the people who come to this place... So I insist on this, some supervision by hierarchical superiors would not do any harm when we see the excesses that there are...

(Translated by Google) I didn't want to leave an opinion at the base, but in hindsight, I think the situation deserves to be denounced. On September 29, we decided to go for a drink on the rooftop with a friend. Around 11 p.m., we were told that they were closing earlier due to the lack of people (instead of 1 a.m.). Well, there was almost no one there so we understood, we were told to finish our drinks quietly and we hurried to do so (in 2 minutes...). We took our drinks back to the bar (which, incidentally, were overpriced), and we were yelled at by a very aggressive security guard for at least 5 - 10 minutes. The situation was so unpredictable that we didn't know what to say, except that we had only just been warned. We spoke calmly, he continued without any of his colleagues saying anything. We are told that it is already closed, that we will have to go elsewhere (I remind you that we had just been warned) and we are FORCED into an elevator alone with the security guard in question and one of his colleagues (very reassuring therefore). We were stunned. Is this a joke? So they close early, we don't say anything, we take our drinks back to the bar to fix the staff, they yell at us, they prevent us from leaving and on top of that we are forced into an elevator with a man who was verbally attacking us 5 minutes before??? I don't recommend this place unless you want to get mugged, in which case it's the perfect place. On était sidérées.

Park
Square Planchon is conveniently located near Montpellier's main train station and is easily accessible by several tram lines, making it a popular spot for locals and travelers alike. The square features vibrant greenery, colorful flowers, and intriguing sculptures, creating a picturesque setting for visitors to enjoy. Additionally, there is a children's park within the square, adding to its appeal as a family-friendly destination.
Nice little park across from the train station. Nice place to wait for your train if your early. Or to relax after the ride.

Nice park. With nice features (statue, rock fountain, playground). Only one entry - exit point.
G K — Google review
Situated right across the street from Montpellier's main train station and surrounded by stops of several of the city's tram lines, Square Planchon attracts a large number of people who are on the move. It also has a fair number of homeless people who use some of its benches for sleeping. The square has lush vegetation, beautiful flowers, a couple of sculptures, a children's park and is well maintained.
Georges Y — Google review
Small and busy park opposite the station. Reasonable for a little sit down to be fair. Conkers from trees end of September though... careful, they just fall on your head willy-nilly!! Tram stations handily nearby too.
Stacey 1 — Google review
It is true, “mal frequente” meaning bad people are here, so watch out. The park has an old ginkgo biloba tree and a fountain with limestone deposits and moss.
Niels F — Google review
Charming little park with a kids play-area and plenty of benches around.
Gregory D — Google review
This place can seem like the usual park in the middle of a French city, but I was amazed at how incredibly beautiful it is to look at the birds going to shower in the rock that’s in the middle of a pond. Beautiful cozy park to hang out in the sun. I would come back time and time again.
A S — Google review
Never walk here, especially in the evenings as it is a big amount of intravenous drug usage in the open there.
