Kandy Lake is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Right in the heart of the city, it offers a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle. The path around the lake is flat and easy to walk—about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace—making it a great way to soak in some nature without much effort.
One of the most fascinating things about the lake is how much wildlife you can spot. We saw monkeys swinging through the trees, huge water monitors (honestly, some of the biggest I’ve ever seen—even bigger than the ones in Thailand!), and all kinds of birds. We spotted pelicans, kingfishers, herons, and this time of year (June), there were tons of baby birds in nests—so sweet to see.
One heads-up though: there are large bats (flying foxes) hanging in the trees around the lake. They’re impressive to see, but fair warning—they do poop, and it might land on you if you’re not paying attention, so maybe don’t linger directly under the trees too long!
The lake itself was created in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of Sri Lanka, and it’s still a central part of life in Kandy. Right next to it is the famous Temple of the Tooth, so it’s easy to combine the walk with a visit to one of the country’s most important cultural sites.
Overall, Kandy Lake is a great spot to relax, take photos, and enjoy Sri Lanka’s rich mix of nature and history. Just keep an eye on the sky!

Visited the Tea Museum on a quiet morning. Was given a great explanation of the history of the museum and then left to explore on my own.
It was low season and there were only two other people there. The museum tells the story of the tea manufacturing industry in a building which housed the factory 100 years ago; it was humble presentation of history and a nice stop away from the bustling centre of Kandy.
Ticket price is 1000 Rupees which also gives you a free cup of tea on the top floor, and 10% off any purchases in the shop. Well worth a visit to explore the history of Ceylon Tea.

Not a great experience for us.
It's an old tea factory now restored as a museum. They have all the machines that is being used to make a tea donated by different tea states of Sri Lanka.
Location is nearby from the centre, situated on the top of the hill from where you can have an amazing view of tea garden.
Entrance fee is 1000 Rs which include group guided tour and a complementary tea at the restaurant.
The lady ( in 40s) which was assigned to us for the guidance had absolutely no knowledge about tea or how the process works and why do you go through the process. It seemed she was reading the script to us. We asked her few questions about didn't get any answer.
At the restaurant you can order a THALI TEA for RS1000 which comes with 7 different types of tea.
Overall you can spend 2-3 hours if you have time

Visiting this tea factory was one of the highlights of my trip! The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable — they explained every step of the tea-making process with such passion. The tour was both educational and fun, and the aroma of freshly processed tea filled the air.

This museum is conveniently located in the palace area nestled behind the temple of tooth. It was overall informative of the history of Kandy and had some great pieces with simple but informative information in a number of languages (including English). My personal highlight was some great old maps of Sri Lanka. It was very quiet when we went. It is not very large. It definitely provided lots of information however it was not exhaustive. Hidden Gem in Kandy.
Overlooked because most people go to the tooth temple but this is really a must see in Kandy. A lot of people don’t understand the history behind this building This building established during Sri Wickrama Rajasingha era was then known as “Palle Vahala” This was used as the palace where the Queens of the king lived. This building has been built according to the architectural features of Kandy period. This pallevahala building was used to deposit the various items of historical value made by Kandy Art Association established in 1832 and technicians of Matale district. This was opened for the public as a museum 1942.
This museum has over 5000 museum objects which are depicting various aspects historical and cultural events of the Kandyan period. (17-19 century A.D.)
The staff are amazing. We visited during Tourism Day and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in Sri Lanka. The staff are amazing. Highly recommended

Visited this museum with kids. We visited by walking to the back of the Kandy temple of Tooth palace along the lake edge.
It's a small museum with some 17th to 19th century Kandy kingdom era items.
This museum building itself is historic and part of the Kandy palace. The size of walls, doors frames is massive.
Next to this museum, is another museum building called "Middle Palace", which was the king and queens bedchambers. It is opened only till 4pm.
The museum consists of few large rooms. Took us less than a hour to read descriptions and see the whole.

The Kandy National Museum was not on my list but when I asked around for the War Cemetery, I was told that it prohibited visitors now and I could, instead, visit the museum.
So, there I was! I bought a ticket to visit and stepped inside. The Kandy National Museum is a treasure trove. It presents a glimpse into the past grandness.
The construction itself is a piece of the past. I could see how the Kandy National Museum prominently displayed stories unique to this area.
The Kandy National Museum is a knowledge store. It is a conduit through which the prior triumphs and the colonialist rule eras are communicated to groups.
The Kandy National Museum though will benefit from getting some cooling/ ventilation installed. All through my visit, I was sweating buckets!

A lovely church that's sitting in Kandy near the Tooth relic temple. Peaceful and simple are my words to describe it. I asked for permission before clicking pictures here and the stained glass windows have my heart.
Lot of history to the church can be found on the walls inside the church. Overall a nice visit. They even have live performances on Saturdays with three prayer rounds with live choir.
One must visit this place that's very easy to reach to and as I mentioned it's near the Tooth relic temple, one can visit both on their tour to sri Lanka..Kandy.
There's a good coffee shop too nearby, rather opposite to the church where the cars are packed. It's the best way to spend a few hours praying to the deities and then having some coffee to unwind and head to the next stop.

I used to attend St Paul's, in 1964-66, when I worked at then University of Ceylon, Peradeniya Campus. Then my father and my elder sister's family moved to Kandy. They attended St Paul's and my sister still attends, St Paul's. My father (G.S.Peter) served as a Treasurer for a long time and when he retired my B.I.L. (Michael Fernando) took over from him. Wow.. excellent evening show widdances involving mulvera Puja dance. They've all Danu, dance peacock dance.

We happened to be there on a Sunday which was quite to popular day for locals to say their prayers. Make sure you have a sarong or pants to cover legs, if not there are vendors selling them to the right of temple where you can get flower offerings as well. Sarong was about 2k rupees and a whole tray of gorgeous lotus flowers were only 1k. Foreigners must enter to the right of temple , buy a ticket from the machine which only takes cash I think it was 2k per person and then you must check your shoes. All temples are barefoot.
If you want to see the tooth it was a mental line up. Temple was nice for a walk around, we gave away some of our flowers and dud a little offering upstairs.

L’idée d’un endroit atypique et décalé nous plaisaient bien avec en plus une certaine histoire … Malheureusement ça n’a été que des déceptions, nous étions seuls pour le dîner, certes les lieux sont originaux et chargés d’histoire mais ce n’est pas propre et légèrement angoissant lorsqu’on y est seuls. La nourriture n’est pas terrible non plus pour des mets plus que moyens et à un prix exorbitant. **Very disappointing experience.**
I went to Royal Mall Restaurant specifically for the buffet, and when I asked if it was available, the staff confirmed it was. However, when I approached the buffet, I was shocked to find that many curries and all desserts were already finished. I asked the manager about refilling them, and he said they would do it "soon." Unfortunately, by the time I finished my entire meal, nothing had been refilled.
Even worse, the manager kept disappearing and was nowhere to be found when I needed help. This was a complete waste of money. The service was careless, and the buffet was not at all worth the price. I strongly **do not recommend** this place to anyone. Terrible value, poor management, and overall a useless dining experience. Avoid this restaurant.

The food selection was amazing but most of all - the staff were incredibly helpful and went over and above to provide great service. There is a supermarket, the mall, liquor shop, gym, Nations Trust bank, and a pharmacy on 1st floor. Sandagiri Mahaseya is a recent impressive addition to the many Buddhist places of worship in and around Kandy.
This temple set amidst a tea plantation on a hill in the Hantana Range about 5 kms from the Kandy city centre.
The temple can be accessed from the vehicle park by tuk through a narrow road or a bit more challenging flight of about 200 steps.
The stupa at 100 feet is the second tallest in the area and like all modern temples is hollow and houses a large inner hall supported by a single column designed as a bo tree. The inside is ornately decorated and has a beautiful statue of the Buddha.
From the large belfry on the side of the temple you can get a 180° view of the surrounding hills.

What a gem of a place. Meditation hall there for you to stop quieten down and reflect...on your journey thus far, your good fortune to be here, and what is important to you. The hall above is magic. Wooden carvings simple but impactful then drawn up the eye sees frescoes painted of Buddha's life. In the muddle a wooden stup with all the Buddha's of for directions and a centre gold stupa set inside. Another room at lower lever of this great stupa is a history of the sri lankan periods of Dharma and texts written in those periods as well as some artefacts. I heard monks chanting on their morning puju but could not find hall so listened. At the back is a monastic school and living quarters for the monks. Now this place reeks of authenticity as compared to the white Buddha on the opposite side of the hill. This is worth coming to see and feel. I entered on my own from the street, and there's roughly 115 steps, but if you are coming by tuktuk, there is road up. It's free..... unheard of in sri lanka for foreigners. Blessings to them.

My favourite temple I’ve visited in Sri Lanka so far! You can go inside the stupa, which is so stunning and colourful 🩷 we were the only ones there, it’s free to visit and it’s so CLEAN and well preserved. Located in the heart of Kandy city. Walking distance to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy City Centre and the lake. Easy access to banks, restaurants and supermarkets. This is a quite old hotel but has managed to maintain somewhat. Still running an old elevator which is kinda cool and scary at the same time. We had a pleasant and quick check in with the front office staff being quite prompt. Rooms are spacious and has that rustic look which is cool. They have a lovely swimming pool which is super for a city hotel. Breakfast buffet isn't a big spread but it hit the nail on the head with their excellent combinations. All in all really nice experience, value for money but the only downside is the limited parking. Staff is super very friendly.

The hotel was very disappointing and below avg. Yes the location was great and so was the service, but the rooms were very shoddy, not maintained, and had a wierd smell. We changed the room as well but both had the same thing. The food was bad too, the breakfast had just eggs, breads and juice. Moreover, there was a construction going on in the hotel which started early every morning and we would wake up to the noise of drilling machines. They failed to mention earlier about the constryction and this is not how one would want to wake up on a vacation specially after paying good amounts for a hotel room.

This was our second stay at W15 Hanthana Estate, and from the moment we arrived, it truly felt like visiting the home of a very close friend. Everything from the food to the ambience was perfect. The staff always go above and beyond, giving us an experience even better than the stay itself.
A special shout-out to the butlers Sheriff, Hastha, Manjula, and Lahiru. They were incredibly friendly and attentive. Sheriff, just like during our first visit, gave us the warmest welcome and even checked on us right until we checked out.
As nature lovers, my husband and I always look forward to the nature activities here and once again, Naturalist Bhanuka Ranasinghe made our stay unforgettable. During our first visit, he took us on a jeep tour that became one of our favourite memories, and we learned so much from him about leopards and wildlife.
This time, we went on a night walk and also visited the Indiana Jones movie location, which was such an exciting experience. He even arranged a beautiful morning tea setup at the rock bar; another moment we’ll never forget. Just like last time, Bhanuka explained everything with so much knowledge and patience, answering every question we asked. Honestly, he feels like a good friend to us now.
On the day we went, Bhanuka actually had another commitment related to his research. But since we had informed him in advance that we were visiting, he postponed it and joined us for all the nature activities which we appreciated so much
W15 Hanthana Estate has become one of our favourite places. We always leave with full hearts, unforgettable memories, and a strong desire to return again.

We were there to celebrate my birthday. From the beginning to the end it was wonderful experience. The bungalow manager is very polite and the staff specifically Sheriff & Manjula was taking care of everything we needed. Location is isolated from others and have no disturbances. The driveway to the house, where we had Sheriff waiting to greet us, was just a flavour of the charming and luxurious house with a superb view over the hills and valley. The ambience at the reception was nice with Koi fish at the small artificial pond they’ve made and comfortable sofas to sit. There are managers allocated to give you a tour of the place and explain the different grade of gems. It was very lovely to see the section explaining how mine workers mine the minerals and convert them to gems stones. The interiors of this section literally makes you think if you are in a mine for real. They have such a huge collection of gems and also sell these and varieties of jewels with these brilliantly studded gems. They also provide a certificate of quality when you purchase gems from them. In case you are planning to buy any gems from them, it’s better to have a budget allocated for it.

Believed to be the place where the royals used to bath during Kandy era. As per the archeological sources, there used to be an open well of natural spring waters which later was built up as a proper royal pool. The bath was built pre-Kandy Lake where there were paddy fields here. Excavated and reserved under the funds of central cultural fund in 1980s. The authorities have done an excellent job to reinstate the whole building including the wooden doors, windows and the roof to its original status. Entrance is free. Many visitors (specially the locals) don't bother to read and understand the historical value of this landmark.
Department of archeology should ideally educate and aware the visitors to Kandy or Dalada Maligawa regarding all archeological sites (including this one) in Kandy by appropriate means e.g. information billboards, videos on social media, at the railway station, entrance of Dalada Maligawa, etc.

This historical monument is the royal bath house where the spouses of Sri Wikrama Rajasinha, the last king of the Kandyan kingdom is said to have used this beautiful, perfectly preserved location for bathing purposes.
This premises is also said to have fresh water resources even before the adjacent lake was built.

This museum occupies the upper two floors of the Alut Maligawa building and contains a stunning array of gifts donated by several presidents and Buddhist leaders from across the world to the Temple of the Tooth. Letters and diary entries from the British time reveal the colonisers’ surprisingly respectful attitude to the tooth relic. More recent photographs reveal the damage caused by a truck bomb detonated by the LTTE in 1998 which caused significant damage to the temple complex.
