Very disappointed so we phoned reception who quickly sent up a cleaner. We were not happy with this so they did upgrade us to a better room and a few drinks vouchers. Breakfast was brilliant- can’t fault it, but would appreciate more options for a halal diet. Spa - we did the included Cottonmill spa on day 1 and that was sufficient. I think it’s quite an expensive upgrade to do the Club, but we went ahead and this was definitely worth it! We had spa treatments which were brilliant & attended a class as well. Tastefully decorated rooms, delicious breakfast, wonderful spa, friendly staff, lovely grounds. REALLY good gym. The entire property is lovely. Really easy to get to from London using the train, and a nice 30 min walk from the station or a short bus. Only note is that there's two spas inside the property, the more luxury one is paid for (over £100) OR you need to book the expensive suites to get access to it. The open to all spa is nice enough (like a normal hotel spa). I didn't get to visit the more luxury one.

Myself and my daughter went for afternoon tea. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond, especially Quentin, who couldn't have done enough for us. Absolutely amazing. So will post here! I am writing to formally raise a complaint regarding my recent stay at Sopwell House, which I booked as a surprise for my partner’s birthday. While your staff were consistently warm, welcoming, and attentive, the overall experience fell far below expectations — particularly given the cost of £900 for one night (over £1,300 including food and drinks). Booking & Communication I made the booking online the day before our stay. The only niggle is the car park situation as you need to pull up beside the hotel, get an access pass for the car park and then drive round to the car park round the houses. The staff were really friendly and the building is beautiful and very in keeping with the art deco age. The hotel smells gorgeous when you enter and the bar area is so pretty. The bathroom is great with a huge shower/bath. The room we had, had all the needed amenities. Would definitely stay again if in the area. About 15 minutes drive from the Warner Brothers Studio Tours, so the perfect hotel stay close to the magic!

Overall a fine stay but with a couple of niggles. No mirror over dressing table so you have to block passage at end of bed with chair so you can use big mirror by tea and coffee tray. Very noticeable scuffs on wall below TV and hole in wall at side of bed. Also large damp patch on ceiling just outside bathroom and again on ceiling above bed. Takes away from the general appearance. Super, comfy huge bed and general cleanliness good. Breakfast very nice with great waiting staff. Overall a nice place to stay to explore St Albans. Room 210 just needs some attention.

They don't have fridges in the room, often the temperature control in the room is an issue as it tends to be always cold. Sometimes it has to be done by the main system. Floors quite noisy and can hear heavy feet from other people's room. Quite annoying at early times of the day. Breakfast is by timings and is the main reason I'm giving it a 2star. I should have had a table for when I arrived but it was full and then other people were waiting as well. The food and the drinks are never replenished towards the end. I have gone down for breakfast 1:15 before closing and the yogurts, granola or fresh fruit corner of glass bottles is completely empty and not replenished through the whole remainder of breakfast. Orange juice/water, empty as well and not replenished, maybe one out of the four bottles had some water and this is not the first time. Lots of parking. Didn’t eat here because there were so many other good food options around St Albans. The service was good, the bar staff were great. Due to the hotel’s age there was no elevator so had to carry all bags upstairs. It’s a nice building with Great Lake and gardens. It was cold outside, even snowed however the bedroom was so hot. The cleaners turn the radiators full on and even the air conditioning until was pumping out hot air. The bed and pillows were comfortable if not amazing. The bathroom had been modernized but didn’t have a hand rail for a hand towel. We will come back when we visit St Albans again but will figure out a way to cool the room!!!

Rocation wasn't communicated clearly beforehand. Something like this really should have been spoken about over the phone. Not written at the bottom of a confirmation email a day before the event. I completely missed this communication and only saw this when a member of your staff said it was emailed to me. It was such a anti climax arriving to simply be shoved in a pokey room to the side. Upon arrival noone actually greeted us and took us to a seat. I spoke to reception who gestured to enter the Cedar room where no staff were. This really isnt the type of service expected from this type of place. The overall level of disorganisation and service was very poor. I think we had three different people speak to us at the table, all seemed clueless and unsure of what we were actually there for. It all felt bizarre and felt awkward. Having also done several afternoon tea experiences I can say the sandwiches were no were near up to the standard I would expect. In fact, I would almost say the bread was stale or close to turning. Nothing about it felt fresh. Overall the experience was completely underwhelming and there is far better out there. As it happened, parking was free so I didn't need to worry about the ticket but a sign at the barrier saying this would've been appreciated (especially in a world of private parking enforcement companies using ANPR). Parking was readily available and no need to fight for spaces though. Overall, a very nice stay and I cannot fault the hotel experience at all. It is so clean and tidy and a good fair price to enter here. At some points you are able to get up close to the ruins , the rocks and stones used in constructing this wonderful building. There are benches around this place so you can sit and relax, It takes you back to a different time than we know today and makes you think about how life really was then. There is still some new discoveries here which i never knew about and they are still working of different parts of this site including having just unearthed a row of shops which i found wonderful to see. There is also a underground shrine that looks lovely but you can't go down there just can look from the top. Really enjoyed this visit and made a great day out in St Albans.

I was given a card several times after walking between the bot n the room door, which I was unable to open. I was unable to find anyone to assist us. Eventually we located a cleaner who called the manager. She came and tried multiple fixes but eventually we moved rooms. The manager was really good but restrained by poor company systems. She provided us with a complimentary drink! In the evening we tried some bites, the halloumi fries were a rip off (none eaten in the photo!) and the bar staff were elusive and unfriendly. Basically an awful Hotel run by a pleasant young manager (in the picture). Breakfast was budget quality as you'd expect. Service rating lifted by the manager and dropped by the other staff.

Subsequently there were lots of unknown people including local drunks gathered outside of the front of the hotel doing god knows what until late in to the night ….. it was unnerving at best and had I been on my own I don’t think I would have stayed. I get the impression it may be being utilised by the council for temporary housing in addition to paying guests. The construction of the hotel is cheap and flimsy. You can hear the guests above you every time they walk across the floor and you hear every guest walking down the corridor. The rooms are extremely small, as are the bathrooms. When sat on the toilet, the sink touches your arm. The fan in the bathroom is on all the time and is very noisy in the middle of the night (sounds like an old fridge). The curtains are cheap and do not block light. Someone had stolen the batteries out of our tv remote and we could not find anyone to resolve the issue. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable and not the greatest. I recognise this is a cheaper option but honestly I would pay the extra and stay at the Premier Inn (we had the dog with us so it wasn’t an option). This is the third awful experience I’ve had at a Travel Lodge and it will be the last booking I ever make with them.

I saw lots of people with pushchairs and wheelchairs, they had plenty of room to look at each stall and move around. Lots of variety with the stall holders, who were all lovely and very friendly.
