Around supper time it starts to quite down. The camp sites are pretty much on top of each other with no privacy whatsoever. In the off season it's not too bad as the campground is not so full. The Ranger we talked to was lovely, she answered a bunch of questions and was pleasant to talk to. The trails are marked VERY good and are well maintained. The bathroom was closed for the season, but the vault toilets were clean and stocked.

The Stone cabin is very small with 1 queen mattress and a twin trundle bed along with a coffee table and 3 chairs. The Coffee tree cabin is the traditional 2 sets of twin over queen bunk beds set up. The campground was quiet, and peaceful. The only negative is the cleanliness of the showers and bathrooms. The women's bathroom was not cleaned the entire weekend so we didn't take showers the 2nd night.

So this review is much more about the Rathskeller than it is about Turner Hall and their hall facilities, which we also did enjoy as part of their 2024 July 4th celebration. You can see some shots of these in the photos. Every time I come back to New Ulm Turner Hall and a meal at the Rathskeller is a must. Years ago on one of my first visits I had a burger and now no trip is complete unless I have another. Their burger is somewhere between a classic patty and a smash burger where a smash burger is too thin and the regular patty does not have enough surface for enough sear goodness. On top of that, they understand that the bun matters as much as the meat and condiments and pair it with quality bread. One thing to note, that it seems in MN, a California burger means with lettuce and tomato where in CA, that means add avocado so make sure you specify if you want tomato and lettuce. My wife ordered the Walleye. She loved it and was happy to have ordered it since it is one of MN's state fishes. An item we don't often see in our home state. You should also know the Rathskeller serves it in 2 options: grilled or battered. If you do not specify you will get battered by default. This is more of a crumb than a batter coating. My wife wanted grilled, didn't specify and got it battered and still thought it was good. In addition to these items I also had the coleslaw and cheese cubes. Both were quite good. If you love German Potato salad, note that they do not have it on the menu on the regular and typically make it for special occasions. I do recommend Turner Hall's Rathskeller dining. Go there and try the burger. It may not be the best burger you ever had, but it is one of the better burgers I have had and maybe it will be for you, too!

Came here on a Thursday to scope out a good campout for Vikings games, which this probably isn't quite it for that. Turner Hall does deliver a nice rustic atmosphere though. Believe me, I love quiet, but this historic platform missing even a few patrons and bar flies seemed ironic as to how it made it this far. My buddy got a Reuben which, in both our opinions, is the best in town. Chunks of corned beef cut right off the brisket and plenty of sauer kraut. I got the bleu burger that tasted great. The burger was a little short on the bleu cheese aspect. I will certainly come back as I am interested in what more there is to offer and see this place in a more crowded light.

They were running a prime rib steak special this Saturday evening, which caught the attention of all three of my dinner companions. I opted for the St. Louis full rack of ribs. Salad and soup were delivered fast. My bride had the vegetable beef soup and was expecting the usual style, which I think most of us are accustomed. She was not impressed with the variation she received. One large thin slice of beef with broccoli and mushrooms in a weak broth. Buyer beware; you might want to stick to the salad. When our main course was delivered I could tell instantly there might be some disappointment in the, dare I call it, prime steak. Now, this is an area of contention for me. If you're going to put prime rib on your menu make sure its "prime". Offering a choice grade of meat saying its prime, but its really only a so called "prime cut" is disingenuous and always disappointing. The steak served was tough with no visible marbling and very weak au jus. I'd rather get real prime and pay for real prime. Now for the Ribs, flavorless, coated with an anemic sauce that looked more like a mask than a compliment. I struggled to eat two small parts of it. I did take home the rest of it, doctored it up with seasoning and a good glaze, that made it palatable. The baked potatoes were on point, fresh and delicious. Based on my friends previous experience with a steak off the regular menu, I'm hazzarding a guess that maybe their standard fare of steak and walleye might tell a completely different story.

But... as any true donut connoisseur knows, you cannot judge a shop based on baked goods that are hours old, so this was not a condemning experience. The next morning, my wife and I headed back to Backerei to get fresher donuts and selected an assortment of 4, one of which was an apple turnover. Took it home and had another tasting. Good stuff!! My wife preferred the Apple turnover of the lot expressing it was one of the best she has ever had. I personally noted how 'chewy' the dough was, a characteristic I noted in my previous visit and why i was interested in coming back. To me, this is relatively unique in terms of dough consistency I don't find in many other donuts. Every item we chose was good. I can only imagine how much better they would have been if we came even earlier. Most donuts fresh would taste great as it is hard to find a bad fresh donut, but the Backerei donut has a character. I recommend it but please try and get it as close to opening time as possible or you may walk away unsatisfied.

I fixed that this round. Tours are held 3-4 times a day and cost $10 and can be purchased on the day 1 hour before the tours begin. The tour starts at the museum space behind the gift shop and Tom went though the history of Schell and the family. The museum is accessible without cost but you wont get Tom's narrative. It then moves on to parts of the brewery for an inside look at the mechanics and processes. It ends with a visit to their lower tasting room where you get to sample a flight of Schell's beers along with more history and background for each brew. For those who do not drink, there's Schell's 1919 Root Beer good for all ages. It concludes with a gift glass and a Schell's drink token good for a full pour. In other words, you get far more than your money's worth. A few things to consider: - Tom is a great storyteller and the tour history is deep but parts will stay in place for a good period of time so the tour is not constantly in motion - There are some spots where background noise may interfere with your ability to hear the guide, especially in factory or if you are outside and there is background work being done - Parts of the tour are quite brew technical and you are warned in advance about this - The tour does not include the house and the garden (at least ours did not) - The tour does not actually cover the museum although we were in it for the first part - There is enough beer in the tasting section to obtain a decent buzz. Consume your volume judiciously. The site itself has public access the awesome tap room and bar with food options such as very nicely priced pizzas and a wide selection of brew on tap along with mixed drinks. You have access to the garden and a view of the home as well. A gift shop and the general external facing grounds. A beautiful property. Schell's is the 2nd oldest family run brewery in the US and is one of New Ulm's biggest attractions. If you live in New Ulm or visiting, this is a woirthwhi8le experience and the tour is optional but worth it for the tasting finisher alone. And I got an awesome sweater on clearance. Nothing beats a functional souvenir! If I ever get to build a personal billiards room I will also need to get a Schell's neon sign, but note that they do not sell these. If you want one you will need to source one or have it custom built as they are no longer produced.
