Or rather... the Rathskeller... which makes much more sense since Turner Hall is the hall and the restaurant is the bar. The Rathskeller is the bar/eatery famously known as Minnesota's oldest bar, which makes it historic, and the eatery was once held exclusive to members who paid an annual membership fee. At one time, you had to have this membership or come with someone who did in order to eat here. Sadly, most of our friends who had membership have since passed so had it not opened to the general public without membership, I may not have had the option to dine here again on return. So this review is much more about the Rathskeller than it is about Turner Hall and their hall facilities, which we also did enjoy as part of their 2024 July 4th celebration. You can see some shots of these in the photos. Every time I come back to New Ulm Turner Hall and a meal at the Rathskeller is a must. Years ago on one of my first visits I had a burger and now no trip is complete unless I have another. Their burger is somewhere between a classic patty and a smash burger where a smash burger is too thin and the regular patty does not have enough surface for enough sear goodness. On top of that, they understand that the bun matters as much as the meat and condiments and pair it with quality bread. One thing to note, that it seems in MN, a California burger means with lettuce and tomato where in CA, that means add avocado so make sure you specify if you want tomato and lettuce. My wife ordered the Walleye. She loved it and was happy to have ordered it since it is one of MN's state fishes. An item we don't often see in our home state. You should also know the Rathskeller serves it in 2 options: grilled or battered. If you do not specify you will get battered by default. This is more of a crumb than a batter coating. My wife wanted grilled, didn't specify and got it battered and still thought it was good. In addition to these items I also had the coleslaw and cheese cubes. Both were quite good. If you love German Potato salad, note that they do not have it on the menu on the regular and typically make it for special occasions. I do recommend Turner Hall's Rathskeller dining. Go there and try the burger. It may not be the best burger you ever had, but it is one of the better burgers I have had and maybe it will be for you, too!

Came here on a Thursday to scope out a good campout for Vikings games, which this probably isn't quite it for that. Turner Hall does deliver a nice rustic atmosphere though. I find it odd that I'm saying this, but this place needs the crowd to look and feel the environment it's offering. Believe me, I love quiet, but this historic platform missing even a few patrons and bar flies seemed ironic as to how it made it this far. My buddy got a Reuben which, in both our opinions, is the best in town. Chunks of corned beef cut right off the brisket and plenty of sauer kraut. I got the bleu burger that tasted great. The burger was a little short on the bleu cheese aspect. I will certainly come back as I am interested in what more there is to offer and see this place in a more crowded light.

It is a local favorite and I do love my beer and brats. A few notes from this most recent visit: I don't know if the knives aren't sharp or the ribs are too tender but the knives couldn't cut them. Ribs tasted good regardless. But even when I tried to saw the ribs apart the knives just sort of smashed them instead of cutting through them. The pretzel is good but a bit salty. Found myself having to brush off as much salt as I could to keep it from overwhelming the bread. Otherwise, a good overall experience. Also, make sure you get a Schell's beer with your meal. It is a must in New Ulm.

We told her we would bring back the whole salad and get our full refund back and would like a full refund back on just the salad from our order. If she knew real customer service she would have made this right And said come back and we will make you a new one or tomorrow. Well apparently they were out of homemade Croutons and the other part of the chicken took off some where else. We never ate or touched the salad. WOW the best I can do is write this review and hope knowone experiences this ever at this place. We never complain or right reviews but wow I could tell she was smiling through the phone the way she was talking and didn’t care about customer service at all!! We have been to many Green Mill restaurants and this by far the worst!!!! You do not get what you actually pay for!!!!!!!

With that said, my foodie sister who has visited New Ulm frequently insisted that we have a sitting at the Applebee's here. My sister insists that the New Ulm offering is better than the Bay Area ones but not being a frequenter of the ones at home I had little to compare to. With that said, it was a classic American food adventure with no particular item being outstanding. In other words, I don't think you will be wowed or disappointed if you choose to stop in. Also consider too that this is based on the collection of plates we ordered which you can see in the photos. There may be something that is truly wowing and it may be worth the effort to find it by stopping in yourself. Their were 2 bathrooms available to use that were unisex! There was an employee cleaning one of the bathrooms & the other was unused. I was going to use the available bathroom & the employee stopped me and asked me to wait until he was done cleaning the bathroom he was in and I could use that one because he needed to go straight to the other bathroom & clean that one. I world have been in and out of the other bathroom before he even finished cleaning the one he was currently cleaning. I obliged & and waited, but was really taken back by his strange request. He was the sweetest and most patient person and honestly, the best customer service person I’ve had in the food service industry. He let me order a basic taco and some oles. But, the last two times (including today) I did the same thing. I came ~20 minutes and this older woman said that they don’t have any meat made until lunch time. I don’t know if this was a fluke where the other gentleman had meat or what the circumstances were but god was she rude. This woman has the absolute worst attitude and yelled at me through the speaker for wanting a meat taco. I then proceeded to say that it was posted on the menu and asked what they have on the menu that’s actually available. She said the breakfast food. It’s very vague and I asked for clarification, she wouldn’t give it. It’s sad that all the younger staff have great customer service skills, including some at opening time but this older lady has no respect for customers. If you are going to be yelling at people through an intercom and have an attitude, DO NOT WORK IN THE FOOD SERVICE. With having to get her twice and be treated like that, I don’t think I’ll be coming back to this location again. As I see other reviews, it looks like she’s ruined this location for others too.
