Ich bin vom Stadtzentrum etwa eine Stunde hoch und 45 min runter gelaufen. Stückchenweise ist der Weg ein bisschen anstrengend, aber man schafft es entspannt. Direkt am Ausblick ist das Klo, sodass es dort stinkt. Der Rest des Berges ist mit Bäumen umgeben und bietet keinen Ausblick. Dafür gibt es Grillplätze, Spielplätze, Rutschen und Verkaufsstände (Snacks und Getränke). Die Gebäude sind leider nicht ganz so gut in Schuss und sind teilweise vermüllt.
Der Ausflug lohnt sich für die schöne Aussicht!

I really enjoyed my stay at Kasa Kiwi. The location is great, right near the park, and the owners are incredibly helpful. I also feel very safe that the front door is fully locked. The bar upstairs is convenient and really fun, and they always end music by 10-11pm at the latest so you're never being kept up super late. I like that the beds are open (not bunks) and the rooms are huge and well ventilated so they never get that stinky hostel smell.
Downsides: only 2 toilets for all the dormitories. When the hostel was full, it really sucked to wait for the bathrooms. Also some of the rooms are very noisy as they face the street. No common area besides the bar (but honestly the hostel room is really comfortable to hang out in since it is so large compared to most hostels) Be aware: lots of trekkers getting up at 4 or 5am for hikes as well!

We stayed here for 3 nights in a private double and had a fanatic stay! The rooftop view and bar is perfect for sunrise / sunset views and also to chill during the day. It has a great kitchen and is close to the main square. Tom is so, so helpful and available for anything you need. What I was so impressed about was the warm welcome and the huge amount of usual information they provide for hiking and tours. Tom will help you arrange any guided hike or tour but also give you all the details you need if you want to do hikes and day trips alone, without paying for a guide / tour. They are so honest and it is was so refreshing to stay somewhere that generally wants you to enjoy your time and is not focused on trying to sell you extra services. We will absolutely stay at Kasa Kiwi anytime we come to Xela.

We came here for the bakery initially which was full of products sweet and savoury. It was great to see the bakers making the bread fresh through the glass window. The cafe, however is a different story. Staff are miserable, uninterested and borderline rude. The coffee is weak and watery and they don’t even allow you to use their WiFi even though there is WiFi listed there. Wouldn’t bother with the cafe at all there are much better cafes in the area.

My partner and I had both the vegetarian (4) and chicken (4) samosas (I think the vegetarian ones were better due to keeping moisture a bit better). We got only 1 entrée the Tikka Masala (pictured half the plate) it was enough to fill the both of us and it was very well presented with really balanced flavors. We drank a mango Lassi which they said was a Indian specialty and it is definitely a different combo of flavors than we were used to but very very refreshing.

Definitely recommend this museum to anyone visiting Xela. It is run by local women who are very passionate about sharing their knowledge. We received a detailed and informative talk about the history of the region which was eye opening. The collection of traditional Mayan clothing is impressive and beautiful.

What a wonderful museum! But first some caveats: the place is being run by a tiny little nonprofit that gets no government support. You must call or WhatsApp to Raquel, the nice lady who will guide you through, and it will all be in Spanish. They don't have electricity in the building, so in the darker rooms she will use a flashlight (and you can help with the light on your phone).
Having said all that, the collection of traditional clothing from the region is outstanding. And nobody has EVER done as good a job connecting these contemporary costumes (which the people really are wearing every day in their lives) with drawings from the original Maya codices going back 2000 years.
The entrance and tour was Q50 each and we were there over an hour--plan accordingly. If you have an interest in the traditional clothing of Guatemala, it is not to be missed.

This could and should be a great museum of Xela's history centered around the railroad. As of Feb 2025 there is nothing to see but an empty building. You can walk in and see people sleeping on the floor of what presumably was once the train hall. There is a stage with lights for concerts or events. But no exhibits at all. The adjoining memory museum has a torn awning and broken locked door. The upper floors appear to be rented as office and co-working spaces. Everything I learned about Xela's history had to come from the Internet. So sad.
