Nice boardwalk portions of the trail; the grassy and gravel trails were also great. Saw some waterfowl, but no Gator sightings. There are many scenes of Spanish moss covered trees and bullrushes on the water's edge. We saw many people of all ages enjoying the scenery as well. If you are looking for a place to spend some leisurely walks with scenery, this should be on your list to visit. Dog friendly and some bicycling is available.

Someone or their child is going to get hurt because people still try to play on the playground & enjoy the Riverwalk. Let's do more Augusta before we loose even more funds to our city. On a whim, I decided to stop in anyway when I was passing by. I am very glad that I did. I was able to catch the 1 pm tour and it was the most informative tour of a plantation that I have ever been on. The ranger who gave the tour was fantastic! They have so much factual information on this place. The knowledge was incredible. The tour is 1 1/2 hours long and packed with real accounts of the history up to present day. Caution: we went in July. There is no air in the house so if you can't handle heat wait till cooler months to tour. They do offer hand fans to use but it still was really hot and you will "sweat your booty off".

The mansion is beautiful and I definitely recommend the tours. After that, we got our park stamp at the office. The office was well-kept and there were 2 rangers inside. Then, we left the office to walk the trail, even though it was raining. The trail is open and very easy to follow, with beautiful views throughout. We saw a velvet ant, which is a bright-red beautiful wingless wasp, however they can sting, so be careful. Then, we kept walking to the pond and saw a large dragonfly which I quickly caught just to get a picture, then released it. The pond was beautiful and the best part of it was the thousands of tiny frogs hopping around it, everywhere! They were no longer than 1 inch long and there were seriously thousands of them. Overall, this place is a great place for anyone - history fans, nature lovers, hikers, entomologists... anyone!

As for me and my family, we frequent the splashpad that sits directly across from the playground. There is plenty of space for children to explore and roam safely with lots of benches or shaded areas on the grass to settle in and keep an eye on the kids. This place is especially great for toddlers. With it being shaded the plastic doesn't get overly heated in the summer, and with the splashpad nearby the kids can cool off in the water. There's also a small and large side to the splash pad keeping the tiny tots safe from the excited bigger kids. I love that my son and I can enjoy the serene walk and then finish the day off at the park and splashpad!

I was very pleasantly surprised. The trail is totally paved and can easily fit four people across. Very scenic with a few creeks that I saw and also had a tunnel and a bridge. Trail is mostly shaded so you have protection against the sun for the most part. About 1 mile in, there is a street adjacent to the trail that makes for a great uphill challenge. I ran 4 miles in and 4 back but the trail was still going after 4. Again, great trail, there were many people out and everyone was very nice and encouraging. Will visit again when I'm in the area. Took my son to a free educational event here and explored the grounds while I waited for him. The building was well kept and was great for the educational program we were there for. The staff was friendly and attentive. The parking was perfect for the size of the place and the event we were there for. The property was what you would expect for being wetlands. There is a wooden boardwalk/trail that circles through the wetlands. It is truly wetlands, so you can expect bugs, insects, and wildlife of various degrees. Including possibly encountering a poisonous or venomous creature. While I didn't encounter anything that dangerous on my first visit, I did see some spiders that could be unsettling for some. Keep an eye out for all kinds of life, even on the boardwalk. That being said, this is a great little place for adults and kids to learn a little about this type of habitat. I would easily recommend to others and will be returning again for classes and simply to see the habitat at different times of the year and during different weather patterns.

Do NOT try to walk across the dam; you might die as many have before (an old timer's warning), but from an angler's, kayak, or canoe-ist perspective, the canal offers a nice gentle paddle down into Augusta proper, plus there's the chance you might see an alligator along the way. During the summer you will find the logs lined with turtles and shallows with hunting cranes. Lovers can bring their locks to attached to the main headgate fence as so many others have done. The "ancient" tech of the old lock, once an important route around the falls (part of the Southern Piedmont "Fall Line") used to connect Augusta, farmers, and cotton / produce markets ranging from Atlanta to Savannah. The Canal has a history of powering Augusta's once mighty textile mills, which, after decades of being shut down, are coming back to life as mixed use properties, including Cyberwarfare training centers, engineering outfits, etc. During the summer it can get really hot & muggy; therefore the best time to tour the park is late late afternoon or early morning in hot weather. Expect a profusion of flowers in the spring, and don't be surprised to see a few deer down in the hollow between the canal and Savannah river. You might even spot a few old shacks "down in thar" - what remains of old fishermen's shacks and homeless living quarters until the city drove all the poor out. There IS a major big "shack" right near the canal, but don't be misled: it is a mansion compared to what folks used to live in down there up until about 15, 20 years ago. Part of the city "cleaning up the area" is, of course, to get rid of the poor people & roust them out. Bring your walking shoes & camera. You can rent kayaks, take a tour boat from Augusta's Sibley's mill area, but do not swim. Be aware that if you go down to the RIVER you are taking you life in your own hands. Plenty of people have drowned out there, including some friends, due to slipping on the rocks. The water is more dangerous than it looks. There is a very nice pavilion available for rentals & wedding & events, the old lock keeper's structures have been re-renovated, there are parks for the children, and a cooling off area with mists down by the bridge that crosses the canal. Keep yer eyes out for snakes if you go in the woods, and check for ticks when you come out. You can pick up a dozen in a minute down there in the swamp areas. There's good fishing down the river, and on the canal, mostly bottom fishing, but other things that swim. Nice place to visit & learn or just enjoy yourself during a family outing, or if you're a photographer/biologist like me, plenty of plenty to do and see.
