We stopped for lunch on a visit to the town, it was not too busy and is dog friendly. They have a few areas, down stairs, upstairs that also had a bar and restrooms and they have a little glass room area. We had a small dog and there were also other dogs, we were able to sit in the glass room which gave us a beautiful view of the streets. We had 2 pizzas between 4 people and they were absolutely amazing, by far the best I have had and the flavours in these pizzas were incredible! I would definitely recommend for dinner or lunch and would 100% go back again. The staff were very friendly and made the experience really amazing. They loved dogs which made it such a dog friendly restaurant. As you walk in, you can also see the pasta being hand made! If you like, you can also see Paul Ainsworth’s cookbook.

We managed to get a table for lunch by some careful juggling by the lovely front of house chap. The food was devine - I scooped out every bit of my truffle mayonnaise I had with the arancini as it was too good to leave. However everyone one of our dishes were just superb and the three of us were sharing each other’s picks just to get a taste of the lovely dishes. No room for pud so we’ll shave that treat for next time. I also had one of the best americanos I’ve ever had. Prices were very reasonable and at a level that sits just below treat level so more frequent trips are very much on the cards. However, there some little things that also set this place above others. Tables that could seat four were set for two so you didn’t feel like you were taking up seats from others. Service was discreet but very friendly. The head of house asking how our starters were after they had been cleaned away but he knew who had what. Another touch was the baby changing table in the gents - still a rarity these days. The place also wasn’t cramped. There was obviously a greater concern over patron’s experiences rather than cramming tables in to make more money. Well done Mr Ainsworth, many could learn from you. We’ll be back.

A treat after the previous day’s downpour! We’d booked lunch to celebrate a belated Mother’s Day and our mum’s birthday. Everyone was impressed. The food arrived promptly, was full of flavour, and the portions were generous. The burgers were so well stacked, they turned into a fun little eating challenge! Those who chose the fish said it was fresh, and the mussels were an absolute delight, tasty and plentiful. There was a great range of drinks, and the service was spot on. My husband had the Catch of the day and chips which ended up being a cod-like fish - it was very nice and fresh. I had the special - soft shell crab chilli burger and it was very tasty, but a bit scary to look at! (I expected a patty not a whole crab!). The reason for 4/5 stars was it felt more like very good pub fish and chips and not the sea-side slightly greasy fish and chips I was hoping for, but might be personal preference. The unlimited chips was great although my husband and I shared his chips and didn’t want seconds.

So, this was a treat from my wife and son for my birthday. I fish a lot, both here and abroad, and I cook my catch regularly, so I know what I'm talking about. The fish were supposedly hake, lemon sole, pouting and whiting. The only one with any sort of flavour was what they identified as whiting (I think they may have been muddled up as it tasted more like sole). The 3 other fish were very very bland, with any flavour they did have being totally masked by the huge amount of batter. To make matters worse, the batter held onto the oil / beef dripping so much that everything was incredibly greasy. There was barely any fish when compared to the amount of batter. Price - if it had been the best fish and chips of my life I could accept the high price tag . . . . . . but it wasn't. I've had better fresh fish with huge flavour and larger portions at half the price back home in Kent. For somewhere that has good local ingredients from a company that is supposedly renowned for fish cookery, it was very poor. It needs the boss (Rick) to drop in unannounced and do some quality control. And ask himself if he's happy putting his name to the product. I know I wouldn't be ! Save your money, walk round to the harbour and get fish and chips there. Twice the quality and quantity at half the price.

Now you probably thinking “he’s crazy, this place sounds really disappointing,” However the pasta dish I had was one of my favourite dishes I had all holiday. It was delicious and had some long Italian name I can’t remember but I do know it was the only pasta dish with three chillies. Someone else also enjoyed a creamy gnocchi. 2 members of my family had a pizza and they were disappointed. Apparently the dough was not nice and the toppings felt like they had been frozen for an age. It overlooked the Padstow bay. I wish I could describe it in one worrd but it's more than just one thing it sells bottles of wine, sparkling wine and champagne. It also has a small seating area inside and outside to the front where you can have a glass or two of what you fancy. They also serve platers of food to go with the drink of your choice. The service is great and the owner not only has a fantastic choice of wine champagne and beers he has lots of knowledge of all he sells to. We had a couple of glasses of champagne with a plater of cheese and it was that good and that relaxing we had a bottle of champagne and spent the afternoon there just watching the world go by. On the Sunday when handed the bill at the end of the evening, I noticed the bill was excessive. They had added to our bill the previous round of drinks that had already been paid for. The following morning at breakfast, talking about the events of the previous day, I relayed my experience at Ruby's the night before. My Daughter said she had paid for the last round of drinks on the Saturday evening and they done exactly the same to her. They had added on previous rounds of drink that had already been paid for. The food service wasnt incredible, ive been for a tasting menu at a high end chefs restaurant and the experience wasnt as good as that sadly. The waiters were all friendly and polite but food wasnt explained very well on the menu or specials, no drink pairing was recommended with any of the dishes either. we all had starters and a fruits de mer in the middle of the table which came with dips and sides, it would've been lovely for the waiter on our table to offer us help with how to enjoy this platter and which dips went with which seafood, it would create more of a dining experience as it was some of the tables first time having this dish. For starter i had the sardines which came with a delicious garlic and coarsely chopped green herbs topping which was very tasty. For main i had the steak which was cooked to perfection, cooked medium rare and it just melted in my mouth. The only downside was if this restaurant wants to compete with the top restaurants there needs to be more care when presenting food to the table and the service provided during the meal, our waiter was pleasant enough and interacted with us in general about our evening just not enough about the food presented to us or how to get the most out of our meal. Maybe a taster menu level of service is more what i was expecting than general dining but having heard great things about the restaurant previously maybe we just built it up in our heads too much. I had some lovely mocktails throughout the meal, i cannot consume alcohol due to medicine i take, recommended by Daniel M our waiter which i let him suprise me with and they were excellent, easily the best part of service of the meal were these drinks. For desert i had 3 scoops of ice cream, 2 pistachio and one chocolate, the toasted pistachio biscuit that came with it was a nice touch. The ice cream sadly didnt have much flavour. Never terrible but always average and I'd rather support local family businesses like Chip Ahoy. Today I wish I would have gone to Rip off Rick's and got a meal that was actually edible. To start with the missus ordered over the phone 2 fish and 2 chips with 2 curry's and a mushy peas. We went and collected and headed down to the harbour wall to enjoy. Only we didn't enjoy because as soon as we opened the bag we realised there was a fish and chips missing. Whilst looking at the 1 portion of fish and chips i decided I'd rather not go back for another because what was presented to us looked dreadful. The fish was the worst excuse of a thing I've ever seen. It was 70% batter. The batter was greasy, and rock solid. The tiny piece of fish under the brown concrete exterior was dry and overcooked. Thankfully it was about the size of a sardine so our suffering wasn't prolonged. The chips were absolutely terrible. They were not particularly flavoured, had no salt and vinegar and had less life in them than my late Nan (former Mayor of Truro) and she's been dead about 15 years. The curry sauces were okay, actually better than Rick's and a much better portion. However I'm not sure why the person packing didn't question why we would need 2 big pots of sauce for 1 portion of fish and chips. Personally I would have clarified if we had ordered 1 or 2 fish and chips. The mushy peas were the best thing out of the bunch and even they were a 7/10. The fish was so bad I threw some of the batter on the floor to a nearby bird. The batter bounced about 17 times and the bird had a nibble and left it 🤣 So with that being said it appears Padstow has no good fish and chips shop which is a real shame with it being a Cornish harbour town. You'd think there would be an abundance of high quality chippy's with beautiful fresh fish. You've got Rip off Rick's which is decent-ish but terrible value for money. Then Chip Ahoy which has just served me the most pathetic fish and chips meal of all time Then some other place that's rated 2.1 star on Google. Glad I got a tuna sandwich from Tesco on my drive home to fill the void. I think the sandwich had more fish on it than my serving from Chip Ahoy and it was certainly moister and more enjoyable to eat.

The decoration inside is modern and stylish. We had the 2 course Sunday lunch prawn cocktail was lovely and fresh. Our waitress Sienna was attentive and well timed, helped us choose the right dish and was nice and friendly. The food was superb, packed with flavour (we recommend the shepherd pie!) and there was a compact but perfect choice of wines to compliment. We came for an elevated pub grub experience and that’s what we got.
