The hotel is prime location, can walk to all major attractions. It ticked all my boxes, very clean, great bedding, great bed, good amenities, good wifi coverage, near parking, quietness and lovely breakfast! Looks the part. Might be an OK hotel. But we just dropped in for a meal. Was willing to accept the typical plastic pub menu on this occasion. Ordered Sausage&Mash. Simple. The Stables has a great location, easily accessible with plenty of parking. A spacious hostelry with plenty of seating options, dog friendly and big picture window views with adjustable blinds when the sun shines brightly. Every part of the meal was delicious, chicken succulent with cheese melted to perfection , salad with tasty dressing, the ridiculously garlicky dip (the BEST garlic dip weve ever tasted imo!) And the chips were the nicest weve eaten for a while. Very generous portions too! For both meals, 1 large chardonnay and a pint of Madrid it came to £52. Reasonable imo. Partner wants to eat there every day of our holiday now!

It is in probably the best location in Whitby. Don’t get me wrong the food is not bad, the breakfast is especially good, but the location and the staff are even better We stayed one night and dropping off your cases took some planning as it is at the end of a pedestrianised zone. Room was spotlessy clean and the view was beautiful. Spent a few hours in the pub Saturday night to listen to the live music. Was a great atmosphere im there. I enjoyed the steak and sweet potato fries and my wife enjoyed her fish. High chairs were a pain to get in and out of, but worth it for the view. It is very misleading in the description given. There are 4 cots in a secluded area behind the pub, each with a picnic table. However the bed and sofa bed are poor quality, extremely low and VERY uncomfortable. There is no privacy for changing etc and one toilet and one shower between all 4 cots..... absolutely intolerable. Neither were very clean and the only sink is in the toilet cistern. Imagine cleaning your teeth in that. Especially as you are sharing with complete strangers. The breakfast was nice, with a reasonable choice. However, although staff are polite, they are not particularly welcoming. There is no way I could recommend staying here unless the owners have plans to substantially improve what they offer.

The toilets and showers are close by, and shared. That was the only down side. I did notice drains and water were in place for a future upgrade, and this would significantly improve the already comfortable accommodation. The food was really good. The breakfast was top notch, made with locally sourced food. The pub itself had a nice vibe, with a mixture very friendly local people, and overnight guests. There was a good selection of beers, ciders, and lagers. The staff were busily going about their duties, but available when needed. There is a cinder path close by that leads in to Whitby, and if you're fit enough, it's about a 40 minute walk. I liked the place and would stay again. Thanks for a pleasant weekend.

If you want a concierge, 24 hour reception, gym, turndown service and a nail bar, this isn't the place for you... in fact Whitby isn't really your place! I've just enjoyed my second stay at the Jet Black Jewel and, as a creature of habit I've stayed in the same room - The Hand of Glory - both times. This is one of the cheapest rooms but it's spacious and very well appointed. There's everything that you need - and it's all good quality, a really comfortable bed (the pillows also deserve a mention), TV with loads of channels, fridge, great (and free) WiFi. The bathroom doesn't have a bath but it does have a fantastic walk-in shower. If I have one gripe it would be the heating in the room, it can be quite warm - but this is probably down to me, as working this sort of thing out has never been my strong point! As I'm not really one for a breakfast - and due to an itinerary outside of my control - I have yet to eat in the Café bar and meet the Jet Black team to thank them (another reason why I'm writing this review) but I have heard the food is great - which taking the room into account, doesn't surprise me at all! Based in the town centre, it’s a great base to explore the town and surrounding area. The rooms are large, clean and modern with quirky decor that isn’t too OTT. We loved the staff-less check in and out, made it really simple to come and go as we pleased. The parking pass made it easy to park on street nearby, we were never more than 100m from the hotel. Will 100% be staying again the next time we’re in the area.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Had breakfast on the morning we left. It is up quite a steep hill so if you're walking from town be prepared for that although it's not a particularly long hill but if you want to go to the Captain Cook Statue and whale bone arch it's an easy walk up a fairly moderate hill and is much easier to get to from the hotel than getting up to it from the town. Parking is a bit of a nightmare and we did struggle to find a place to park and that was further up the hill and around the corner, about a 5 minute walk.

This quirky, and fiercely independent hotel was our home from home during a weekend in Whitby. The staff are extremely friendly, the owners incredibly helpful and charming - with a cracking sense of humour. The buffet breakfast was served on antique plates in a room with a stunning view. Vegans very well catered for with advance notice. We stayed for 3 nights and it was fantastic. The hotel is gorgeously decorated throughout, with each room themed and filled with character. Breakfast delivered to our door was a lovely thing to wake up to. Our room had a bath, a comfy queen (maybe king?) bed, with a seafront view that included the harbour, the steps, and the Abbey. Parking was directly out front which was a great help. Loads of places nearby for lil bits, and a very short walk into Whitby centre. The rooms are decorated around different themes with lots of oddments bringing the character. Breakfast is a continental bag with the essentials which surpringly does you for the morning. The cocktails in the cocktail lounge is brilliant. Well worth the visit. P.s. dogs are more than welcome. Room Little Red is just for one person though. If there are two of you then you will need a bigger room.

Apartment (clean-comfy-cosy) is well furnished and equipped everything you could possibly need (kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge, oven). Cosy room with a king size bed and a lot of storages. The owners Jools and John were so friendly, welcoming and helpful. Very reasonable price. We paid an additional payment (only £5) for the parking permit. The breakfast was fantastic! definitely recommend. We felt blessed by Simon's hospitality what a lovely bloke. The room was exceptionally clean and well presented we felt we had everything we needed. Stayed here for 3 nights in March. We stayed in room 5, which we found to be spacious, very comfortable and with a well stocked tea and coffee making facilities. The favourable reviews for this B&B are between 3 and 6 years old (apart from one very recent one), something we had not fully appreciated when we made the booking. The room was a good size and well appointed. The bathroom similar. The shower was a mixer tap design so could take a short while to get perfect. Meals were provided. From an excellent breakfast with numerous options through a superb packed lunch to a 3 course dinner with hot drinks afterwards. Guided walks are led by volunteer leaders and evening entertainment is provided. There is a bar and an excellent drying room. If you want to guide yourself( self guided) the price of accommodation is slightly lower. These holidays are excellent for single people due to the friendly way people eat, walk and interact. I can imagine a very different place in the rain. The grand old country house has some colourful decor so looks dated in the public rooms but they are warm and reasonably comfortable. Bedrooms I believe range from perfectly adequate clean and comfortable to well equipped rooms with bathtubs. Food was a good choice and well cooked three course meal which you chose in the day before your dinner. Sandwiches are supplied with plenty of choice these you select day before. We booked our long weekend stay at the Arches as it included a cooked breakfast as well cerial and toast orange juice tea or coffee, and permit parking very near to the pavilion on the West Cliffe. Our en-suite double 2nd floor with shower room was very clean and the bed was comfy with plenty of hot water. Sarah who cooked all breakfasts and Adrian who checked us in. Dave who I booked with was the owner Sarah said as we hadn't seen him. The cooked breakfast was awesome and Sarah was very friendly and found time to talk to all guests who spoke to her. The rooms were not entered during our stay, but anything you needed was there if you wanted it. We had no issues with not having our room cleaned or making our own bed as covid was still around so we were also pleased to use the hand sanitizer supplied. Should you need a West Cliffe guest house with parking permit and awesome breakfast check this place out as we were more than glad we did. John & Sue Norfolk

Highgate House is not the case. What a fantastic place to stay,from the first minute to the last. High quality room which was immaculate, it seemed like we were the first to stay there, that's how clean and well presented it was, absolutely spotless. The host's were welcoming without being pushy and thoughtful in giving info where to park and eat etc. We have been coming to Whitby for over 20 years and know our way around but what two genuine and nice people and a great advert for Whitby. Two glasses of bubbly on arrival was a unexpected touch,the breakfast delivered to the room was of the highest standard in food and presentation. Some photos on websites are embellished to give a false impression of places. With Highgate House this isn't true,the room are of a superb quality and standard and even better in real life. I'm so glad I've found this place and have pencilled in a return visit this year. If you're looking for the best place to stay in Whitby,this is at the top of the tree. Until a few years ago I worked away and stayed in all kinds of b&bs, hotel's and country houses for 13 years. If my company booking me here I'd never go to work!! Worth every penny and I'd recommend this place to anybody. This is the only place we'll be staying at in future. It'll not disappoint you,just book it and enjoy the experience.

Prices in Whitby vary quite a lot depending on what you want, we generally use the B&B as a place to sleep and that's about it. So for this reason we go for economy over amenities. This place is basic but clean, the host is very friendly and gives good advice about the local area. Yes you will be disappointed if you expect luxury, but if like us you need somewhere to sleep and shower then this place is perfect. Plenty of bars,pubs, restaurants, cafes, and other attractions near by. Close to the beach and Whitby pavilion, parking space available if you get lucky. The room we had was No6, this is on the top floor which won't suit everyone as its up lots of stairs. The bed was comfy, a normal double which was fun for us as we have a much bigger bed at home. The shower is very small but works fine and is nice and hot, anyone over 6ft could find it a bit awkward and I couldn't get the temperature to reduce much so that might be an issue for small children. Tea and coffee is available in the room, and it has a small flat screen tv which is plenty good enough for when in the room. Breakfast is served in the usual format of the front of the B&B, lots of choice of cereal and fruit juice. English breakfast is offered which is the usual fare, or the host will provide poached eggs if requested. Toast is provided and the host will happily supply more if you need that. We really enjoyed our stay here, not a luxury B&B or hotel, but very friendly, clean and comfortable. And above all great value for money. Perfect base to explore Whitby.

We arrived wet and muddy with an even muddier dog and Lucy could not have been more accommodating - right down to tumbling some of our wet things! The rooms were immaculate and so comfortable and homey. The bathrooms were fantastic and the shower had great water pressure. We went for dinner round the corner at sneaton Castle - also fantastic Breakfast was quick, delicious and just what we needed. Can't recommend this enough and will absolutely return if ever in whitby again.

Nice decor, rooms very spacious, tea and coffee in the room. Not to mention the lovely biscuits from Bothams ( could have eaten a box of these ). The bed was comfy, room was lovely clean and fresh. Great nights sleep, woke in the morning to a lovely view across the fields and a slight noise of sheep. We had a very nice greeting in the morning with a little bit of humour, which is nice a some make you feel like they just want rid of you.Then came the best bit ( breakfast ), now for me this can make or break a return trip. We’ll be returning. You have to try the full English, all local produce and delivered in a timely manner. You should always expect a slight wait when it’s being cooked fresh but I thought this was quite quick. The wife had porridge (the proper stuff) with a bit of honey. You can tell they pride there selves on the service they give and I actually think they enjoy delivering a good service and this they do 5 stars plus. We will definitely be returning sooner rather than later. A massive well done and keep up the good work, you deserve every star.

Felt incredibly welcome throughout our visit at this immaculate and comfortable guest house. My partner and son’s dietary needs were catered for so we were all able to enjoy a wonderful breakfast each morning. If your going get a 1st or 2nd floor room .£5 for 2 days parking and we got directly outside of hotel well worth paying for .

We have enjoyed the glamour and adventure of Whitby Goth Weekends for nearly ten years. Never before have we experienced the luxury of being able to park in a bespoke, off road, private space just outside where we were staying. Ruth met us on arrival exuding charm, kindness and hospitality. It was a lovely greeting. I had no problem fitting my 5-door Toyota onto the drive. We then proceeded to offload our considerable wardrobe of glamorous costumes. This took some time as we were so enthralled by the beauty of Mount House. We had the whole of the first floor to ourselves; a gorgeous bedroom of huge proportions and a second bedroom along the corridor which became our dressing room. The spacious rain shower bathroom was superb and the second toilet, a useful feature. The whole of the splendid first floor faces the most iconic view of Whitby that everyone “in the know” craves…The Abbey, St Mary’s Church and Whitby’s most cherished and alluring thoroughfare, The 199 Steps. We glutted ourselves from dawn to dusk on the spectacular views from our four sash windows. In Mount House, Ruth has created the most enchanting ambience with exceptional attention to detail, both practical for guests’ comfort and delight as well as artistic and a reflection of Ruth’s interests, skills and talents. We were fascinated by a myriad of captivating objets d’art throughout the house. I loved the authentic, polished wooden floors, especially the creaky wooden staircase! We revelled in the many exotic and tantalising perfumes and scents throughout this beautiful Georgian home. I must now mention, as have other reviewers before me, that Ruth has a passion for paleontology and has translated this interest into a fascinating creative art, producing enchanting, spiral, fossil-shaped soaps. I called it her Soap Opera! We purchased several of these dainty, gorgeously boxed soaps to give as gifts to cherished friends. Ruth is frequently highly praised for her delicious breakfasts. Not only did we enjoy scrumptious breakfasts each day in Ruth’s homely kitchen, but it allowed us to get to know Ruth better and we enjoyed exchanging Life experiences. Ruth was a nonpareil communicator both online, before our stay and during, which greatly contributed to and enhanced our visit. In fact when we tore ourselves away from beautiful Mount House to promenade the streets of Whitby, we truly missed Ruth’s company!
