Unfortunately, our first impression of the hotel was not the most welcoming. The staff member who received us at check-in had a noticeably cold attitude, which immediately set a negative tone for the stay. He didn’t offer any upgrade options—not even paid ones—which made us feel like he simply didn’t care. On top of that, he took about 10 minutes to process something without offering any explanation. My wife eventually had to sit down while we waited in silence, only to realize later that he couldn’t find our registration paperwork—but again, this was never communicated to us.
Another surprising detail was that no credit card was requested at check-in. This meant that any charges made to the room had to be paid in full at the time of check-out, which further complicated and prolonged the already inefficient process.
The hotel itself is massive and undeniably beautiful, but it is poorly signposted. It’s surprisingly easy to get lost or waste time just trying to find your way around. For a resort of this scale and caliber, better signage and guest orientation should be a priority.
As for the food, I’d rate it a 7 out of 10 overall. While some restaurants stood out in a positive way—especially the steakhouse, which offered a genuinely enjoyable dining experience—others were underwhelming. The buffets, in particular, lacked elegant presentation, and the food wasn’t displayed with the level of care or visual appeal you’d expect from a resort of this category.
The casino is relatively small and seems to cater mostly to high rollers. When we were informed that the minimum bet for roulette was $25, we kindly mentioned—very respectfully—that this seemed rather high, especially for a location like this. For comparison, even cruise ship casinos have $10 minimums, and in Puerto Rico’s top hotels, minimum bets are as low as $2. Instead of acknowledging the feedback, the employee gave us a look of disapproval, as if our input didn’t matter at all.
We absolutely loved the adults-only pool—it was one of the highlights of our stay. However, the nearest towel station was a long walk away. You had to walk 7–8 minutes each way just to get towels, which was a real inconvenience in a space designed for leisure and comfort. We even suggested to the towel station staff that towel stations should be placed closer to every pool, but once again, the employee looked at us in a dismissive way, making us feel that our feedback was not welcome.
To end the stay, the check-out process was frustrating and poorly managed. We waited in line for about 30 minutes, along with more than 20 other guests, and only two staff members were assisting. Because the hotel doesn’t take a credit card in advance, all incidental charges had to be settled on the spot, which slowed things down even more. We had transportation arranged as part of our JetBlue Vacations package, and we nearly missed it because of the delay. The driver had to wait longer than usual and was forced to delay the rest of his route.
Unfortunately, I have to say that I wouldn’t return to this property under normal circumstances. I would only consider it as a last resort if no other options were available. Just a month earlier, we stayed at Paradisus Palma Real, and although it’s a much smaller property, the overall experience was significantly better. The service there was outstanding—something Lopesan Costa Bávaro still has a long way to achieve.
