The architecture and experience are gorgeous and one of a kind. There was construction happening above the reception area which woke us up around 8am, but the [beautiful] church bells go off even earlier so it didn’t really bother us. The view from the roof is worth every penny! My wife enjoyed her massage, and we both enjoyed the cenote experience (FYI it’s cold water). Also, be advised there are no elevators. Some people are shocked when they discover that. The roof is three stairwells up. Overall amazing experience and we would most definitely come back. Thank you Otro!

What a find. They are right in the center of Centro, within walking distance to dozens of exceptional restaurants, museums, craft stores, markets, street food, and many historic sites and churches. Our guide for the day actually recommend this location for something that represented Oaxaca food on a high end scale. What a ballsy move for a chef to present a dish based on just tomatoes and beets, but on closer inspection it’s not just a simple tomato salad, it’s 14 varieties of endemic tomatoes of Oaxaca. If people don’t appreciate how complex this dish is (and how the back can easily goof up such a simple dish), then they shouldn’t be dining in this restaurant. The yellow mole was understated and beautiful with the delicious chickpeas. The squash dish was delicate and still had depth at the same time with its puréed base. Alex was our server and he was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable in answering our questions. The whole restaurant was very comfortable and we felt very relaxed with the hospitality. After dinner we had the privilege to get a tour of the back kitchen and after viewing the various rooms, and reading some of the reviews, I’d have to say that people who write shallow google reviews of this place do not understand the work involved in keeping a kitchen this pristine. Rich in flavor for sure! It's traditional to eat the squash and tamale with tortilla. We did one, but we getting rather full and wanted to be able to complete the meal. We likely ordered too much food, but really wanted to sample each section. But worth mentioning is my pre-dinner cocktail. Likely my favorite cocktail I had the entire week I was in Oaxaca, and I had a lot of cocktails. This was the Pina-Coco. I can't even describe how delicious this was. It wasn't sweet or tart. It was like a craft cocktail version of the traditional frozen pina colada. I don't typically like coconut, but it seemed like a festive choice. The private room was very large which gave us space to spread out which was nice. Also a very large bed. The room only has one window which looks in to the courtyard which we couldn't really open, so keep that in mind. We were only really there at night so it didn't bother us, but I can understand it would be a bigger issue for some. Due to the courtyard design of the building noise echo's very badly. It was consistently noisy throughout the day and night. Staff walkie talkies were unnecessarily loud at 6am. If you're a light sleeper this place isn't for you, even with a private room. Also a shame that the rooftop was closed throughout our stay. As our room didn't have a window it would have been nice to be able to relax somewhere nicer than the courtyard. From the gorgeous courtyard, to the huge and beautifully designed room (we had the two bedroom family suite), to the amazingly attentive and lovely staff, we were treated like celebrities staying at a nearly private compound. The Ortenxia team was absolutely lovely, super welcoming and spreading great vibes. They provided us great recommendations of local places to go eat, have drinks and listen to music. They were also really flexible which we truly appreciated. The hotel is new, with exquisite room designs, comfortable sheets and delightful eco-friendly products. The location is perfect, on a quiet charming street fronting the old city aqueduct, within 10-20’ walking distance of literally all the best coffee shops, restaurants, markets and monuments of Oaxaca. We highly recommend and look forward to coming back!
