It was late by the time we finished and we were both hungry and in need of lunch. A quick Google search showed that this place was still open though it was just before 3:00pm. Too many places stop serving lunch by 2:00pm. We dropped by and were welcomed. We opted for the 2 course lunch menu with a glass of excellent Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot (included). The prawns and steak tartare were excellent and we shared it. The steak was divine and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the home made béarnaise though the steak was so good that it wasn’t needed. My husband enjoyed his home made chimichurri sauce. We were too full to have dessert. We will definitely be back next time we visit Bendigo.

Sadly, our latest visit was deeply disappointing. The female manager’s service was unprofessional. We ordered two medium-rare steaks, but one was overcooked. While she did agree to replace it, she said “It’s also the lighting here, I can’t really see” and the steak’s thickness hence why it’s overcooked. When paying, we found we’d been charged for a different, more expensive dish—about $100 more—than what we ordered. The manager implied it was on our end that did not noticing the size of the steak, the name when they served, and only after discussion, we both agreed to meet in the half way, $60 discount was applied, but leaving us confused and uncomfortable. On the positive side, the male staff member (pictured in our second photo) was very professional and saved part of our experience. Although the meat quality is excellent, two negative encounters with the manager have put us off returning or recommending Woodhouse to friends.

The sign of a great restaurant is one that you don’t want to leave. The staff kinda feel like family by the end of your 3 hours of eating and you just wish they had a sofa for you to collapse on for that food coma we all fell into. Masons was simply wonderful. The menu is designed for sharing. Starting with tapas and then there are small plates and large plates to share. This suited us as we were not looking for a large meal. We ordered some tapas, and somehow, we were now hungry for more. The sourdough bread and whipped butter with black sea salt were to die for. The best bread I have had in a long time. Each plate we ordered was in small proportions, appealing and delicious. They say you eat with your eyes. The plates here were certainly eye appealing and delicious, they were delectable. We asked for a local chardonnay, but unfortunately, there wasn't a local chardonnay on the menu. We ordered one from Macedon, which did not disappoint. The wait staff were friendly and attentive, and nothing was too much for them. This was a great find and should we need to visit Bendigo again we will return.

Amy, Kate and all of the staff made our day absolutely spectacular, from setting up on the day, to helping us make decisions, nothing was too much of a hassle. Food was great, I ended up sharing a three meats & sides platter with the wife. The Burnt ends were really good and same with the Lamb shoulder, the Brisket was okay but id try something else next visit. The sides were great as well being perfectly golden and cooked through. We arrived mid-afternoon and were pleased to find the kitchen still open. We ordered what sounded like a charcuterie/ cheese board, expecting something like a ploughman’s lunch. The plate arrived with mortadella slices that tasted exactly like devon, two pickled chillies, a tiny chunk of cheese, several thick slabs of salami, one egg - cut in half and smothered in mayonnaise (what the heck?), and rice crackers that looked and tasted like communion wafers. The highlight of the dish was the delicious chutney, to be fair, the only thing that belonged on the plate. It was the strangest and most disappointing meal I have ever paid for. Nothing went together apart from the chutney and cheese. It is a real shame because the staff and setting were faultless, but the food was simply dreadful. The last time my family of four visited this venue it was operated by a different cafe which was really great. There were no menus, the barmaid apologized as said she was busy and had not had a chance to take them out. Husband ordered the steak, I had the plant-based burger. I came for brunch on a sunny Sunday afternoon. We were seated in the window and had our coffee and food orders taken straight away. The place was busy with people seated outside the front and in the courtyard out the back. There were plenty of staff to attend to everyone and we received our coffees relatively quickly. The coffees and food were very well presented and fantastic quality. The prices are also very reasonable. Highly recommended!
