Lovely stop. Walking through this beautiful house was breathtaking and eye opening. Lots to see and enjoy. Marble tubs for both salt and fresh water is a over the top crazy indulgence in life. Marble House – Newport, RI
Visiting Marble House was an absolutely amazing experience! The mansion is breathtaking inside and out — a true glimpse into the Gilded Age with its stunning architecture, opulent interiors, and rich history.
My husband and I really enjoyed walking through each room, taking in the detail, and imagining what life must have been like during that era. The grounds are just as beautiful, with peaceful spots to sit and admire the view.
The tour was well-organized, informative, and allowed us to move at our own pace, which made the experience even more enjoyable. It’s definitely a must-see when in Newport, and we left feeling like we’d stepped back in time.
Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates history, design, and a truly unique cultural experience.

Kingcote is one of the older Mansions that was slated to be knocked down and was rescued from the 1950-1960 (town decision?). Great woodwork and a lot of original artifacts. Grounds have a European Fernleaf Beech Tree thats very rare in US, by my experience. Doesnt seem prone to Beech tree diseases. Part of Newport Mansion Preservation and worth getting 2 person memebership that also allows a guest. No private tours for Kingscote typically (rare).

The Isaac Bell House is now open for about one month. If you are a Newport Mansions member, you may have to book your free tickets through the member portal. I have been a member for years, and the changes after COVID include restrictive dates and rules to see certain houses. Prior to 2020, visitors didn't have to book a tour for the Isaac Bell House -- they could just show up. Now, the process is cumbersome. I have a member plus individual membership. We got the tour, but were told we couldn't use the bathroom until every single person from the previous tour left the house, and that specific tour had started late because there were late people. Lovely house with minimal furnishings. The tour highlights the architecture and the wood paneling. Can you look at the second and fifth pictures and tell me there is no bulge in the roof? I was told there is no bulge, that there is a sun shadow.

The Isaac Bell House is an extraordinary historic house and a major place of interest in Newport Rhode Island.
In September of 2018, I brought and treated my wife and myself for a guided tour of the Isaac Bell House when celebrating our honeymoon in Newport, Rhode Island!!!
Designed by the renowned architectural firm, Mckim Mead & White during America’s Gilded Age, the house served as a summer residence for Isaac Bell Jr, a successful cotton broker & investor.
Today, the Isaac Bell House is a historic house museum, offering guided tours to the public, and due to its rich heritage and well designed architectural features, has been listed on the National Register Of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark.
During our guided tour, my wife and I learned much about the history of the Isaac Bell House and were very impressed with the use of the Shingle Style Architecture on its exterior. We also liked the wall-paneling and wooden floor which is featured in the house’s interior.
The Isaac Bell House is an outstanding architectural & historic landmark, and my wife and I very much enjoyed our guided tour experience!!!

We had a tour led by Phillip. He was extremely knowledgeable, and kept the tour very interesting as he shared his knowledge of the house, its unique architecture, and its history of owners. If you are an architecture lover and want to hear great stories, this is the place to go. Up there with the big 4 of the Newport Mansions, even if it is so different and not as "grand."

The Isaac Bell House is a historic house and National Historic Landmark at 70 Perry Street (at its corner with Bellevue Avenue) in Newport, Rhode Island. Also known as Edna Villa, it is one of the outstanding examples of Shingle Style architecture in the United States. It was designed by McKim, Mead, and White, and built during the Gilded Age, when Newport was the summer resort of choice for America's wealthiest families.
Isaac Bell Jr. was a successful cotton broker and investor, and the brother-in-law of James Gordon Bennett Jr., publisher of the New York Herald. Bell hired the New York architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White (Charles Follen McKim, William R. Mead, and Stanford White) to design his summer cottage. Known in Newport for designing Newport Casino, and later in Boston for designing Boston Public Library, they also designed the famous Pennsylvania Station in New York. Construction took place between 1881 and 1883.
The Shingle Style was pioneered by Henry Hobson Richardson in his design for the William Watts Sherman House, also in Newport. This style of Victorian architecture was popular in the late nineteenth century and named after the extensive use of wooden shingles on the exterior. The Isaac Bell House exemplifies the style through its unpainted wood shingles, simple window & trim details, and multiple porches. It combines elements of the English Arts and Crafts movement philosophy, colonial American detailing, and features a Japanese-inspired open floor plan and bamboo-style porch columns. Interior features include inglenook fireplaces, natural rattan wall coverings, wall paneling and narrow-band wooden floors.
The building's history includes being split up into apartments and serving as a nursing home. With the help of Carol Chiles Ballard, the house was bought in 1994 by the Preservation Society of Newport County, which won awards for its restoration, and which now operates it as a house museum.The Isaac Bell House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1997.

We visited Hunter house during the week. Reservations are timed and have to make reservations online early. Tours are limited to eight people total. Our tour guide was Lauren Armstrong and she was excellent! She had an enormous amount of information not only about the house and the owners, but also about Newport in the 1700s to current times. She took time to explain each of the owners connection to the house along with their histories. The tour lasted approximately an hour and a half that went by very quickly. We all came away with a much better understanding of Newport’s place during the early days of our nation as well as what life was like back then. Hunter House does not have the size or opulence of the mansions on Bellevue Avenue but what it does have is a wealth of history and information about Newport and it’s people. Our group was very impressed with the quality and information given on the tour. We all gave it a 10 out of 10.

It was awesome to walk through and see a piece of Newport history and to catch a glimpse into the lives of a historic, wealthy Newport family and their service staff.
The house is beautiful even though a few rooms were under construction. It's amazing even though it's a bit more "simple" than the nearby Breakers and other ultra gilded mansions around.
Worth the tour if you have a day to spare. I'd recommend this ( and the other mansions) as part of a self guided tour to save hundreds vs the cost of an on ship cruise excursion. You can see more, do it at your own pace, and save. Easy access from port and a nice 10 minute walk to the other mansions. Having recently started watching The Gilded Age, it felt surreal to walk through the real-life settings and made the visit feel even more personal. Rich or poor it's nice to have money! Loved touring all the gilded age homes. Should have a package deal to see all the homes that are open. Currently you can purchase the Breakers plus 2. Parking was adequate however bathroom facilities were lacking for females. There was ALWAYS a line. I liked being able to have the self guided tour on my phone. Maybe something should be said about bringing personal ear buds. We ended up going to Walmart and buying some because we did not bring them from home. While the live tours were informative, they also created access issues—visitors often couldn’t get in unless they were lucky enough to join a scheduled group. Visited Chateau-Sur-Mer on Saturday, 6/31/25. Arrived a few minutes before it opened, and were the only ones there, besides one other person. This tour was self-guided, which we generally prefer, so that we can proceed at our own pace. At the info desk, they checked our tickets, which we had purchased online and printed out at home. There, we also obtained a printed copy of the tour narrative- we like this better than getting the app and wearing headphones.
Each room has sign, so that you can then read the corresponding history and architectural details. It was fascinating to see and to imagine how the occupants lived, and to take in the decor that was popular at the time. If you have any questions, the attendants are are helpful and well informed.We spent about forty five minutes in the house.
We then spent an equal amount of time wandering the lovely, well-maintained grounds. Most of the trees are labeled as to type, which I appreciated. If you've never done so, I suggest spending a few moments under one of the weeping beech trees. We also saw the croquet pitch and the moon gate.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable visit.

This is a great mansion to tour. This one was built in 1855 and significantly understated compared to The Breakers.
Still a very impressive place and the woodwork is exceptional. There are several rooms (Library and Dining) that feature fantastic wood carvings from a 19th century Italian woodcarver. According to an employee there, there are only 5 rooms in the U.S. still preserving this woodcarver’s work and 2 of the rooms are in this mansion.

Touro Synagogue is an awesome place to visit! I went in for the tour and the history here is really awesome! The tour guide was very knowledgeable. It was an awesome fact to learn that both Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy visited this synagogue. There is a small fee of $14 for the tour but it is well worth it!

The sanctuary is beautiful, and the docents provide a fascinating overview of the history of Jews in Newport. This is a very bright, historic church with some interesting details and features! Pew boxes, original flooring, pulpit, altar, and windows all tell an intriguing story. And the church is still used for services to this day.
The volunteer/staff on hand was very friendly and knew so much about the history of the church and congregation.

We took the Colonial Newport Walking Tour as a shore excursion on our Silver Shadow Cruise. Ken, our guide, gave us a lot of information on Newport and Rhode Island’s early history. I wasn't able to go inside of the church; however, while touring the Newport area on foot, I passed by Trinity Church and enjoyed strolling through the small cemetery and reading the history and headstones. There is much for photographers, architects, and history buffs to enjoy. The grounds are lush with greenery and shaded by either the trees or the church itself, depending upon the time of day. It's a lovely spot to take a moment to collect yourself, breathe, and reflect before continuing on your way.

We had a beautiful family picnic at Fort Adams State Park and absolutely loved it! The open green space was perfect for the kids to run around and fly kites, and the ocean views made the whole experience feel so peaceful and refreshing.

Take the guided tour! Wow. We took the 330pm tour and had Tony as our tour guide. It was so worth it. Tony was funny, knowledgeable, engaging, and entertaining! My son and I lead ghost tours in the OBX and we love taking tours when we travel. Tony was by far one of the best guides we have had. You can feel the history here. The revolution! I've been inside the fort on Halloween and you can imagine firing cannons at British ships.
This Memorial Day, to honor our troops, they had boots on the ground for fallen soldiers. Very moving! The wall of the fort has been off limits for years but was open this day and was even better than down below, in the tunnels.
This is also the home of the Newport Jazz and Folk festival every summer which I highly recommend!

Scotch eggs were about as flavorful and perfectly cooked as you can expect. Clam chowder was excellent. We also ordered endive salad blackened sword fish and beef Wellington.
