Bodies of Water
Lake Yamanaka, the largest of the five lakes located east of Mount Fuji, offers a picturesque setting for lakeside walks, bike rides, and various water activities. With its rich natural surroundings, it attracts tourists throughout the year to witness cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and snowy landscapes in winter. The area features numerous facilities including accommodations like inns and hotels, souvenir shops, camping grounds, a flower park, and excursion cruises.
This is a bit out of the way from other four lakes and quite a challenge bicycle ride from Gawaguchiko station, but it’s quite worth it. The bike path along the lake side is well maintained and less car traffic. There are many restaurants and cafes to take a break. Swans are very beautiful and they can be easily spotted.

First thing first, for those who has the need to go to toilet often, if you are coming here by joining open trip from Tokyo, then the first thing you can do is go to the toilet first or you will spend your time in waiting line because another participants will go too. They only have 2/3 rooms for female (it should be 2, iirc). After that, you can freely roaming around the lake. The lake, is the prettiest lake I've ever seen. It looks like a crysta navy blue. I was lucky to experience where the color of the lake and sky were same. I really recommend you to visit this first in the morning. You can find the open trip who puts this location as their first destination of the tour (I used the package tour from Trip, this is not an endorsement). If you are lucky, you can see swans here! They got one of the prettiest swans I've ever encounter. And if you are lucky again, you can see Mt.Fuji from here too! It was really a wonderful experience. *the swan cruise looks really elegant but I don't know how to hop inside. But it was unlikely to hop due to tour time limit.

Views of Mt Fuji all along this lake is so beautiful on a clear day! Walking along one side of the shore looking at Fujisan is very relaxing.

Lake Yamanaka is a calm and scenic spot that’s perfect for a relaxing visit. The area is peaceful, with well-kept walking and cycling paths around the lake, and it offers a variety of outdoor activities like boating, fishing, and picnicking. If you’re lucky and the weather is clear, the view of Mount Fuji from the lake is absolutely breathtaking. But keep in mind—it’s often cloudy, and Fuji can be completely hidden. Early mornings tend to give you the best chance of a clear view. Even without seeing Fuji, the lake and surrounding nature are beautiful and worth the visit. A great place to unwind and enjoy a quieter side of the Fuji Five Lakes.

The first time I came here was for the fireworks on August 1st, 2025. I arrived around 2 PM and it was already crowded, haha. I ended up just wandering around the whole time. Mt. Fuji was covered by clouds, but it still looked beautiful🤍

It was fun feeding the birds and taking a ride around the lake. We didn’t get to see Mt. Fuji though because of the weather.

Nestled to the north of Lake Yamanakako, Nagaike Water Park is a hidden gem for those seeking breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. This picturesque spot offers free parking and is an ideal location for photographers and nature lovers alike. With its serene atmosphere, visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the lake's edge while capturing stunning shots of the iconic mountain, especially during sunset when the Diamond Fuji phenomenon graces the horizon.
An absolutely breathtaking view! Walk along the lake and enjoy the weather and the beautiful view of Mount Fuji. We went in January, it was a bit cold, we had to bundle up but the fresh air was worth it.

The best view for mt Fuji around the lake. Free carpark next to the park. Don’t miss the paths to lakeside and try your luck capturing Sakasa Fuji (Fuji mirrored by the lake surface).

We spent our early Saturday at Nagaike Water Park and had an absolute blast! It’s the perfect spot for a fun day out with the family. The splash areas were clean, well-maintained, and just the right size for kids to enjoy safely. There was plenty of shade and grassy areas to set up a picnic, and the whole place had a relaxed, family-friendly vibe. The water was refreshing, and the park layout made it easy to keep an eye on the little ones while still enjoying the scenery. We’ll definitely be back this spot is a gem for warm-weather weekends!

If is superb location for sunset and flower too. It is located just slightly pass Nagaike-iriguchi. The venue was awesome too compare to the usual park that everyone else goes. Slight feedback for those traveling by bus, Kindly travel back before 5pm because when the sun goes down transportation is not as easy at night unless you are fit to travel by foot

Nagaike Water Park near Lake Yamanaka was one of the best Fuji spots of our trip. Calm place, free parking and a crazy clear view of Mount Fuji right in front of you, with the reflection on the lake when the weather is good. We went early in the morning and it was super quiet, just a few people walking, taking photos and enjoying the fresh air. If you’re around Yamanakako, this is the perfect stop to breathe, shoot some photos and just sit down facing Fuji for a while.

A great spot to take photos or videos of Mount Fuji. There are small benches with roof so you can rest and enjoy the breathtaking view. I stumbled upon the area while cycling around Yamanaka lake.

Overall a good camping with some indoor places for kids to play on case of rain for example. The camping spots are okay. The one we got was wide but only made of stones which is not ideal to lay a tent comfortably, and not good to put tent pegs in. Very clean bathrooms and showers.

Almost didn’t pay the entrance ticket to go in but we were glad we did. We didn’t spend long there. We went off season but the flowers were still blooming and capture many nice shots. It wasn’t crowded when we were there so we could sit down and chill.

Oshino Hakkai is a picturesque village located in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, between Yamanaka Lake and Kawaguchi Lake. The village features eight ponds known as the "eight seas of Nunye," which are fed by melted snow water from Mount Fuji. This natural filtration process results in cool and pure spring water that has been revered for over 1,200 years.
A very special indeed museum village which is an UNESCO World Heritage site. The village has 8 ponds which are considered sacred to the pilgrims who go to visit Fujisan. On a perfect day you can see the best views of Mount Fuji from the village. There is no entrance fee to visit the ponds and the village. Also a great Market is at the entrance to the village on the right side. Against a fee of 300 Yen we visited also the Hannokibayashi Folklore Museum. I personally recommend 2 hours for the visit. If you are coming by car a lot of parking spaces are near the entrance ( 200 - 300 meters by foot ). On the road from the parking spots to the main village entrance are a lot of tasty foos stalls. We ate some tasty fried baby octopuses, some Wagyu Skewers and some super tasty donuts. Jump over if you are in the region. It worth it.

This place was beautiful and amazing to visit and experience. Even though it was a cloudy day, the spring waters were clear and beautiful. This place stays crowded, but you can escape that. Many places to try snacks and foods. The souvenir shops had a lot of good items. You can purchase fruits and many local foods. Their are walkable areas to enjoy some quietness. If you can book a group tour, it's better.

Oshino Hakkai is a beautiful and serene village area known for its crystal-clear spring ponds fed by Mt. Fuji’s snowmelt. The entire place feels calm and refreshing, with traditional thatched-roof houses and charming bridges adding to the scenic appeal. The ponds are incredibly clear, offering amazing reflections and views of the aquatic plants beneath. There are also small shops and snack stalls around, making it a pleasant place to walk, explore, and enjoy local flavors. A peaceful and picturesque stop that perfectly complements any Mt. Fuji or Lake Yamanaka trip.

A wonderful Japanese village with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji! The small village itself has a lot to offer with its great soba restaurants and the beautifully clear streams and ponds. You can see huge trout swimming around, and you can even order them as a snack at the next restaurant. I’m deducting a small star only because of the many tourists, but the village lives off them, so it’s all good. Highly recommended!

The village is enchanting and beautiful. It was crowded even at 9 am in the morning. The tranquility of the ponds and their crystal clear waters are amazing. Don't miss a visit to this enchanting village. There is also a small market with tax free that offers a variety of typical and touristic gifts.

Meh... too many tourists. Bus loads! The place is too small to accommodate so many visitors. Overrated. There are many other alternatives in the area. Come only if you Xtra time or if you didnt plan your itinerary carefully and don't know where else to go. Me? I walked around for 10mins and left.

Beautiful place but very crowded with tourists. It’s better to visit early morning. Very comfortable to walk with your pet there. There is souvenir shop and food seller, I’ll recommend to try their mugwort rice cake and japanese peach tea.

Very cute village and lots of vendors. However, some Chinese tourists were acting absolutely crazy over the water fountain to taste the spring water. They brought 5L water bottles to fill up the water and did not follow the line as they didn’t want to wait their turn. In that sense, the experience was terrible but nothing against the village. It’s quaint and beautiful.

Hoto noodle restaurant
Kosaku is a popular restaurant located in Lake Yamanaka, known for its delicious and filling dishes. The menu features specialties like pumpkin hota and jumbo prawn tempura don, served with flavorful miso soup. The restaurant offers traditional and table seating, making it suitable for various preferences. Visitors can expect a short wait during peak times due to its popularity. Additionally, the establishment provides ample parking space and follows safety measures such as providing hand sanitizer and ensuring social distancing.
I have to admit, it’s a very local taste and appreciation… the horse meat sashimi was really tasty… the soup in the pot had a unique taste but overall decent to Savour… The seats were the one that I was very uncomfortable with because my leg cramped 4 times throughout the meal… Will definitely come back again… 👍🏻👍🏻

Buta niku hoto 豚肉ほうとうwas good. Serving is big, with plenty of carbs in it, pumpkin, potato, yam… lunch was a lot more crowded but dinner was more manageable. Managed to get a seat without much waiting. Worth your time if you’re in the area 👍

Delicious traditional thick noodle houtou. The soup is very flavourful and comes with a lot of ingredients. We went for the pork version as well as the chicken, seafood and veggie option. Both were very delicious. Additionally we also ordered the mixed tempura. Wait time is around an hour to get a table. We went on a Saturday at 5.45pm. By around 7.15pm the chef put a sign at the front and the registration counter to indicate that they were not accepting any more customers presumably as they utilised their food inventory allocation for the day so come early to ensure that you are able to dine here.

They take names and pax writing to queue at entrance . Queue was super fast I waited 15mins before I get in. The restaurant is like a big canteen hall inside . Staffs are mostly elderly Japanese so they do not speak English . Service is slightly slow , I tried to raise my hand to get alert to put order but it seems not a proper way to do in Japan . 🥴 Food is ok . We were starving as this is our first meal in Mount Fuji area . I ordered the mix tempura which is 1 fish & 1 prawn . U can see how HUGE is the fish and prawn. They offer free parking behind and infront of the restaurant . When queueing outside there’s some bench and u can directly see mt. Fuji in front of u . U can take a walk at the black sand area behind the restaurant after u eat

A local restaurant by the Yamanakako lake. Very Japanese atmosphere. Sitting on the floor, eating hot udon and tempura. It's a very worthwhile experience. Plenty of parking, good service, delicious food, lots of variety, not long waiting time.

So amazing, we went at 2pm on a Thursday (22/12/22) and was seated straight away. The pumpkin hota had great flavours and tasted so healthy and wholesome, it is also very filling. For me I loved the jumbo prawn tempura don, the pickles are the perfect accompaniment to the prawns. Also each prawn was huge, I would estimate at least 70grams excluding the coating and very fresh. I loved the miso soup that came with the dish. Parking outside and there is both traditional and table seating.

Fujiyama Kitchen フジヤマキッチン offers an international menu with seasonal dishes and a selection of wines. The restaurant provides a picturesque setting with a terrace offering views of Mt. Fuji. Guests have enjoyed various sets such as mushroom and ham pasta, pesto and veggie pasta, seafood tomato cream, and beef curry. The meals are described as solid, homemade-tasting, and coupled with excellent service.
We had Set A (mushroom and ham pasta) and Set D (pesto and veggie pasta), and they were both solid. Set A felt more like it came from a restaurant, the miso, garlic sauce was perfect, the ratio of meat, mushrooms and pasta was also perfect. The pesto pasta tasted homemade, which isn't bad at all. The iced tea and salad was also excellent. We didn't stay at this hotel, but the entire complex seemed really fun and was a nice respite in the middle of the day.

We came as a family to eat for dinner and every seat was separated by thick plastic. We explained that as a family group we didn't need to be separated but they refused to remove them. We couldn't even hear each other speak. Other restaurants do not go to such extremes to separate family members. Thoroughly unsatisfactory experience.

(Translated by Google) A popular restaurant on the shores of Lake Yamanaka, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. We stopped in for lunch after a sightseeing tour of Lake Yamanaka. There were three lunch options. Pork, chicken, and beef. I chose the Yamanashi Prefecture Shingen chicken curry. I waited leisurely while sipping a local beer. There was a comfortable terrace seating area, although there was no view of Lake Yamanaka. It felt great. Today's soup was cold. It was delicious. The food looked promising as well. The curry came with vegetables on top of rice. Let's start. Spicy and delicious. It's been a while since I've had such authentic, delicious curry. Because it's a restaurant in a tourist area, I didn't have high expectations, but it was delicious. My companion had the Koshu wine beef hamburger steak. For pork, he had the Fujizakura pork and cabbage Japanese-style peperoncino. Both were delicious. Although not on the lunch menu, the carbonara was rich and delicious. The Oshino eggs are delicious. The atmosphere was great and the food was delicious, so I was very satisfied. Traditional Japanese Restaurant serving the local meals. The Hoto, a soup with pumpkin and meat, which was delicious (we added hand made noodles) we also tried some Horse meat which is a regional delicacy. Servers were lovely and we managed to get there early just after opening so got to sit in the in ground seat not on the floor cushion. But either way wouldn’t matter for this absolutely delightful traditional experience!

We loved the food and the servers here. Such timely and kind people, a little Japanese goes a long way when you make an effort in a small town like this, even with lots of tourists. The hoto dishes are so comforting after a cold or rainy day and lots of choices to add extras. Self-service tea was a real nice plus.

I did enjoy the curry hoto noodles very much. I am a Westerner so not an expert, but I preferred the ramen noodles and the yakisoba that I've had on this trip to these thicker noodles. I thought the appetizers were very small, while hoto noodles bowl was very large. The prices were a little higher here than the other restaurants I visited. The staff were very polite I understand that my perspective is Western, but I do not like sitting on the floor. It is uncomfortable on my knees. Perhaps I need to do some yoga? I also was a little embarrassed to take my shoes off as I had just been hiking a lot and I felt that my socks were smelly. I really appreciated that there was a menu in English as well as in Japanese.

For English Speakers. They have English menu and the food is delicious! They are known for the Hoto, wide noodle soup. They have variety kinds and it's definitely worth it. If you don't want that they have tempura or Soba noodles as well. They only have one kids menu item but the kids enjoyed what they got. Overall a great place to stop to enjoy the view of the lake and take a break to get some good lunch.

Food ist ok. Still we will not go there again. Be aware of old dishes, you might get food poisoning. When my Partner (Japanese) ask the staff lady about this. When you first enter you must use the electronic system to receive a ticket when to sit, this is in Japanese. You pick the number of people in the party, number of children’s seat, then terrace seating, inside seating or either. There is an English menu but it down not have the entire menu in it. The main dishes came out before the appetizer. The atmosphere is OK but it looks like it hasn’t been updated since 1996 when it opened. The food was delicious except for the pizza, too soft dough. If I. The area it is worth the time to give it a try.

Had lunch here. Food is decent, service decent and atmosphere decent. Mango berry juice was quite good, and the spaghettis are below expectation. There are definitely nicer restaurants in the area. Waited half hour to get a seat, but the shop was half empty, with empty tables and uncleared tables. Operationally I think they could have done a lot better by seating the customers more efficiently. The service can definitely be better if they had more staff to clear the tables and take orders from the customers. Being understaffed, they might have intentionally delayed seating customers so that orders can come in slower.

We had a long drive from Takayama. Was glad that the restaurant is one of the few that was still open at 7ish 8pm. The bowl of tomato garlic pasta was so comforting in the cold dark night! The swordfish was well cooked. We enjoy the eggplant that was well cooked with a generous topping of cheese. Highly recommended if you need a hearty meal in this cold :)

The food just OK. The carbonara pasta better than the margarita pizza. The service was pretty bad. We were waiting for more than 1h. People who arrived later they got first even though there were numbered tickets at the door. There were so many mosquitos around falling down in the drinks and food The service is too young - part-time jobs - and not very experienced: they forget to bring you stuff, dropping the dishes, etc

A nice and cosy Italian establishment serving good food and drinks. We were vegetarians and had fries, margherita and tiramisu. Nothing to complain! It was a great oasis on a rainy evening.

Very unique Italian restaurant on the banks of Lake Yamanaka. They have wonderful sea food and pizza. Their pasta (spaghetti) is a must try too. They accept cash and card. Try sitting outdoors on evenings, the view is so blissful. Their fruit juices are decent. They also have vegan wine! I know. Actually I don’t know what it means.

Cafe
Papermoon is a charming rustic-chic cafe and home goods shop adorned with dried flowers, offering an array of delectable cakes and pies. It's a popular spot in the neighborhood, often bustling with eager customers even before opening time. The parking lot fills up quickly, indicating its widespread appeal. The menu features various mouthwatering options such as lemon custard, pumpkin pudding, sour cherry, and banana chocolate pies.
Has the best chocolate cake and macadamia custard tart ever! The cake was so decadent and served with fresh cream! Everything perfectly balanced. The liqueur frosting was strong though but I loved that.. The vibes were immaculate. This is a gorgeous place for some fresh pastries!

Came on a cold Saturday around 12. There was a wait of almost an hour with more than 10 groups ahead of us. I searched for cafes around Yamanakako but I wasn't planning to come here. However, we came because the bike rental owner? At sansui recommended the apple pies here. As he said it was so popular and he was right. When it was our turn to order, it was sold out. I hope they can make more of the apple pie especially on busy days because it is popular. Had the apricot cheese cake and the pear almond pie instead, which are not bad at all. The coffee was great though I wasn't expecting the latte to be served in a "bowl" not a cup. Their blend coffee is unexpectedly good. On cold days like today, i recommend to sit indoors because only 2 tables outside have heaters. They also have a small boutique with random items to check out while waiting. Lots of car parking space. And bikes can be parked near the entrance. Kids under the age of 10 are not allowed in the store :)

This is a quiet and cozy cafe located a bit far away from busy tourist areas along Lake Yamanaka. The cheese cake is delicious, but it's a pity that the apple pie was sold out when we arrived.

Atmospheric cafe with delicious deserts. They have nice outdoor terrace with Lake Yamanaka view. The parking is free of charge with plenty of space. They don’t allow kids under 10 which is great and ensures visitors can spend their time in relaxed and quiet settings.

They allow dogs that bark loudly on the terrace, but children under 10 years old aren’t welcomed in the shop. I suppose that’s the privilege of being a well-known spot in a popular holiday resort area — you can afford to be exclusive, and people will still come in droves. I was recommended this place on social media as a must-visit for cakes at Yamanakako. The cake itself was fairly average, but the waitress who served us came across as rather passive-aggressive. Instead of making us feel welcomed, it felt more like she was showing us how not to enjoy our time there. The unspoken message seemed to be: have your cake, pay up, and get out as quickly as possible so the next group of customers can come in and hand over their money. Very disappointing. If anyone asks me for recommendations in the future, I’ll have to tell them not to visit here at all, given the concept of this store. That said, I genuinely wish the shop the best with its current business strategy.

Sunday: I walked over with my 5 year old and saw the No Kids under 10 sign. I sent her back to our cottage and waited in line to ask for takeaway pie. “No takeaway today, so sorry.” Monday: Husband and I decide to alternate taking turns getting pie alone and minding children. I wait in line and ask if they have takeaway today. Not today. I ask what day they would have takeaway. Some internal discussion and the answer, “Tomorrow will have takeaway.” Husband suggests I order 4 slices of pie and claim I can’t finish and ask for a box. I order 1 slice to eat there and propose to bring back some of its packable. Pie is not packable, all drowned in melted ice cream. Tuesday: Our last day in the area, I invent an excuse to keep us in the area until Papermoon opens at 11am. I wait in line and confirm takeaway is possible today. My turn comes, I am asked for my order. Apple pie? “No Apple pie takeaway.” They do give me 4 slices of the dark cherry pie though. My kids enjoyed them! But if I’d known, I would have tried the Apple pie when I came by myself on Monday. Pie was very delicious though!! Glad I got to have 2 slices.

Cute little cafe, I enjoy the no children under 10 policy to keep the atmosphere quiet & calm, it is a vibe. Tea was amazing, bought some to take home with me!

Cakes and pies are decadent and delicious. Coffee’s not too strong though. Caffe latte’s creamy. Staff is friendly and polite. This is probably why there’s a long queue of people waiting to get a table. However, it’s a shame they don’t allow kids under 10 years old. So, it’s not friendly to families with small children.
