Izmir

Izmir is a city on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Known as Smyrna in antiquity, it was founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Today, its expansive archaeological sites include the Roman Agora of Smyrna, now an open-air museum. The hilltop Kadifekale, or Velvet Castle, built during Alexander’s reign, overlooks the city.

Market
Neighborhoods
Kemeraltı Bazaar is a historical district in Izmir, stretching from the ancient Agora to Konak Square. It's a lively area with local shops, eateries, workshops, mosques, and more. The bazaar offers traditional Turkish handicrafts, ceramics, carpets, leather products and more in its indoor and outdoor spaces. The bustling market is the heart of Izmir's shopping scene with modern business centers, shops, cinemas and cafeterias catering to all kinds of shoppers.
We visited Kemeraltı Bazaar on a Saturday — it was quite crowded but had a lively and authentic atmosphere. The bazaar is extensive and offers almost everything: clothing, accessories, fixtures, sweets, butchers, restaurants, and more. A great place to experience local culture and shop for a wide variety of items in İzmir.

This place is huge. One can find anything from printing service to suits and souvenirs. Of course there are a lot of restaurants and cafes. There is no need to visit every corner of it. Maybe just casually stroll and see where one is lead to.
Kev — Google review
Beautiful place, lots of stores to buy just about anything. Some are cheap and others expensive. Cool experience seeing the historical building and having a tasty Turkish coffee in the middle of the market. It’s closed on sundays. Free to walk around

A great place to walk around. We tried the mussels and rice. They were excellent. We also did the pickle juice which was also excellent. Lots and lots of interesting shops.

Unique bazaar as there is no goods and shops for tourists. Most of famous bazaar in Turkey is full of shops for tourist with expensive price. But here, most of customers are Izmir people. I like this bazaar. Merchants are friendly and kind! Visit here and feel some authentic turkey bazaar vibe!
Mothusi — Google review
Kemeralti bazaar is quite a busy place. You can find hundreds of things to buy from there as the prices are reasonably low. Make sure you have enough space in your suitcase before visiting the bazaar because there are too many souvenirs to buy. There are beautiful bags with Turkish embroidery patterns and praying beads and countless teas and coffees. There are numerous cafes to have a quick bite but they are all super busy. This bazaar is a must visit place.

Shopping mall
Konak Pier is a historic seaside building located in Izmir, originally designed by Gustave Eiffel. It has been repurposed into an upscale shopping, dining, and cinema complex. The pier houses boutique shops, high-end restaurants with white linen tablecloths, and a movie theater. Visitors can also find English books at the bookstore and enjoy pleasant outdoor seating at cafes like Starbucks while watching the seagulls on the water.
This is a great place. Security check to get in, and then a hub of cafe culture, whilst also being an active ferry port. Very pretty place.
Owen-Rhys H — Google review
Cool concept and interesting that it was designed by Eiffel but it was a bit of a let down since it was not air conditioned in the main mall hallway so stifling hot (100+F day) and the only access to the waterfront was through restaurants. Many shops are vacant but the clothing ones seemed very nice.
Mari S — Google review
I stepped here thinking that I will get a ticket for boat. However its something else. Visiting Konak Pier was one of those experiences that perfectly combined history, sea views, and modern comfort. I loved how this historic building — originally designed by Gustave Eiffel — has been transformed into a chic waterfront mall. As soon as I stepped in, the blend of iron arches, glass ceilings, and sea breeze gave it a unique charm. You don’t feel like you’re in a typical shopping mall — it feels more like a stylish coastal arcade. I spent 20 min here browsing the small but elegant mix of shops, grabbing a latte at one of the cafés overlooking the Aegean. There are multiple cosmetic shops, many restaurants, and movie theatre. All movies were in Turkish, so I didnt plan to experience watching movie here. The restaurants here — especially those with outdoor terraces — serve good food variety with unbeatable views. Prices are slightly higher than in the city center, but the ambiance makes up for it. There is KFC also inside. At a corner you will find museum of illusion. It’s a perfect place to shop a little, eat slowly, and unwind by the sea.

Konak Pier is a shopping and dining center located in a historic building overlooking the ruins of the old port. The place has been beautifully transformed into a charming tourist destination that houses restaurants and commercial markets.
Tuhami M — Google review
We visited the pier to access a restaurant, so I'm not sure what to actually give the pier as a score. Mark, part of our party, has challenged my 5-star reviews, so I'm awarding 4-stars. Very good wc, and you can walk to the far end to look out over the sea. Lovely views. A useful flyover walkway takes you back over the main coastal road to town.
Patrick M — Google review
I loved the place and was amazed by its history and interior, I love the idea of that the stores inside kept the original design and its history as it is believed that the building was built by Gustave Eiffel. They have the best starbucks with the amazing view of the sea
Interiors A — Google review
Pier designed by Gustave Eiffel, now a large indoor mall with some nice open-air terraces. The space itself is well-designed. There are some nice restaurants within, as well as some fast good options like Burger King and KFC. However, many of the interior stores, and even some of the exterior stores are currently closed making for a pretty underwhelming experience to walk around in. Nonetheless, you can get magnificent views of the sunset from here!

Great location. Close to the metro station and just a few minutes walk from the centre of Izmir. Nice boutique style shops and a great selection of restaurants, everything from seafood to burger! Worth a visit!

The İzmir Historical Elevator Building, also known as Tarihi Asansor or Historical Elevator Tower, is a charming historical tower located in the Karatas neighborhood of Izmir. Built in 1907 by Nesim Levi Bayraklioglu, it was designed to provide a practical solution for navigating the steep cliffs that separated the upper and lower parts of the hilly area of the city.
Surprisingly there was no queue at the entrance as there was some protests going on in the city. The view is so nice. If you are not going to sit at the cafe/restaurant 10 minutes is enough to take photos and see around.
Issilay — Google review
Lovely place! The view is something — for two lira, you can use the super cool binoculars, and the restaurant / bar seems to be owned by the government so prices are rather accessible. The little basket of fried things we ordered was not good, but having a cold beer under the hot Aegean sun overlooking tone water like that is not to be missed. We went down via the stairs and up via the Elevator — one can really understand why it was built 😅
Líriel — Google review
A View of Izmir You Can’t Miss! Asansör is one of Izmir’s most unique and charming landmarks. Built in 1907 to connect two neighborhoods separated by a steep hill, it was originally a practical solution for residents—but today it’s become a must-visit attraction. The restored elevator takes you up effortlessly, and within seconds you’re rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of Izmir, the coastline, and the Aegean Sea. At the top, there’s a lovely terrace where you can enjoy a coffee or meal while soaking in the scenery, especially magical at sunset when the city lights begin to sparkle. The surrounding neighborhood, Dario Moreno Street, adds even more charm with its colorful houses, quaint cafés, and lively yet cozy atmosphere. Asansör is more than just an elevator—it’s a blend of history, culture, and stunning vistas all in one spot. A perfect stop to experience Izmir’s beauty from above. 🌟 Travel Tip: Go in the late afternoon, stay for sunset, and then explore the nearby streets for a truly memorable evening.

The İzmir Historical Elevator Building is a charming landmark that blends nostalgia with sweeping views of the city and the Aegean Sea. Built to connect two steep streets, it still serves its original purpose while offering visitors a unique experience. The ride is free, the view from the top is stunning, and the café upstairs is a lovely spot to pause and take it all in. It is a beautiful reminder of İzmir’s layered history and thoughtful urban design. Definitely worth a visit, especially around sunset.

More than a century history with the sponsor by a philanthropist. It has become a hotspot among tourists. The lift is free to use and it has a nice view from the stairs to the Aegean Sea. The cafe on top is a good place to sit and relax.

Nature & Parks
Izmir Wildlife Park is a large zoo featuring animals from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It's a popular destination for animal enthusiasts as it houses 2,700 animals from 134 different species. The park offers free admission and provides opportunities to observe wild animals, predators, and various bird species.
Great zoo! The kids absolutely loved it. We visited it in winter, so - no wait. You can pay by card at the gate - no special tickets are required.
Dmitri P — Google review
Visiting Izmir Wildlife Park felt like stepping into a vast forest full of life! The park is incredibly large, home to all kinds of animals from around the world, living in spacious, natural environments. I spent around three hours exploring different areas, walking through beautiful green landscapes and capturing amazing photos. From majestic lions to playful monkeys, colorful birds, and even exotic reptiles, every corner had something fascinating to see. The peaceful atmosphere and the sound of nature made the experience even more special. If you love wildlife and enjoy being surrounded by nature, Izmir Wildlife Park is a must-visit! It’s the perfect place to relax, learn about animals, and take stunning photos.
Samira S — Google review
A large and interesting zoo. Very easy payment system (no need to stand in a huge queue for a ticket). Beautiful well-kept territory, large enclosures for animals. Great variety (tigers, lions, hippos, zebras, elephants, giraffes, crocodiles, snakes, parrots and much more). Lots of information about animals. A very playful and charming elephant. Peacocks and other charming animals can meet freely on the territory. I would like the toilets to be cleaner. Planes fly over the zoo very often, as a visitor it is very noisy, I don’t know about the animals... apparently they are used to such noise. There are trash cans everywhere, but people do not see them and throw trash on the territory, I suggest to fine such people.
Victoria D — Google review
The zoo is very good, it has so many different animals, with many peacocks that you can see randomly around the park. It also has a nice restaurant that isn't very overpriced and is good to grab a snack. It's very recommended to have a cap when it's sunny as there isn't a lot of shade on the routes there.
Youssef K — Google review
The animals are in a huge area, there are many different kinds of animals. There are also several playgrounds for children, which I think is a very good idea. The entrance fee was 80 lira, but I think it's free for children under 6. We loved it.
Macza R — Google review
It was nice but small 30 min max compare to zoo price was too expensive and trying to scam on website cheaper than normal
Andrei M — Google review
I don't know why, but before visiting here I didn't have high hopes for it. It completely shocked me. One of the best wildlife parks/zoos I've ever been to. Stunning surroundings with natural nature and green trees. The animals were all well looked after and had plenty of space as thought they were in their natural habitats. Very well kept and clean. Plenty of toilets situated around the park. 2 cafes to stop for a drink or bite to eat. Would definitely come back again and would recommend to all ages. We had an amazing day out here. 10/10 Adults 20 lira children 10 lira

Excellent place to spend a weekend. Especially great for kids where you will find animals not in cages but roaming freely. Facility is well kept and clean. Entrance fee is about average. You need good weather to visit to make it enjoyable.

Turkish restaurant
Tavacı Recep Usta in Alsancak, Izmir is a popular spot for those who love traditional Turkish cuisine. The restaurant offers a warm and inviting atmosphere where guests can enjoy a variety of dishes including succulent lamb, beef specialties, and skewered meats. With its rich menu and central location, Tavacı Recep Usta is an ideal choice for a satisfying meal with friends or family.
This restaurant is worth a detour to Izmir. The food here is fantastic and an experience on every bite. This is the chance to eat at a Michelin rated restaurant at an "affordable price" in comparison to US/Europe prices. This is a busy restaurant, so expect this to work a bit like a factory... Rush rush rush.
Diogo L — Google review
Listed in the Michelin guide and one of the most famous restaurants in the city, you can find tasty grilled meats here and lots of delicious sides. Ambience is excellent too.
Ryan H — Google review
Beautiful food and the warmest Turkish hospitality! The lamb was unforgettable, so tender it melts in your mouth. The restaurant has such a lovely vibe, especially around golden hour. We walked in on a Sunday evening without a reservation and were seated with no problem. Just a heads up, the menu doesn’t show prices. P.S.: The picture shows Recep Usta Sarma Kebab, which also extremly savory

Definitely the best restaurant I’ve been so far in Izmir. The one, that makes you think: why should I dine somewhere else? The food is excellent! Although some members of the staff speak only Turkish, the are always very kind and are supported by their colleagues. Unfortunately this time I forgot to make the picture of the food, but I can assure you that it was worth coming in.

Really enjoyed having dinner here’s superb service, top quality food, cosy dining vibe and decent deco on the wall. Truly michelle star restaurant!
Северное С — Google review
Although I don’t like the taste of the “kuyruk yağı”( smelly animal fat) they use for multiple menu options including their complimentary eggplant dolma and içli köfte, they absolutely deserve to be Michelin star restaurant! Thanks for great experience!
IN C — Google review
Great food, but quite expensive! They bring you a bunch of complimentary starters and dessert - we liked the spread but it may not be to everyone’s liking. It is absolutely massive and packed, and the staff do their best to keep up. Not a big fan of all the cats roaming around, given that this is quite a high end restaurant.

Very popular, nice place. Food is overrated. Not special. So you pay for atmosphere. The meat on my plate was chewy, nothing special. Ordered some other dishes for sharing no special taste. Just regular from sensory experience.

Fish restaurant
Located in the heart of Izmir, İzmir Deniz Restaurant has been a popular choice since its establishment in 1981. The restaurant offers a variety of seafood dishes including fish, calamari, shrimp, octopus and sardines as well as soups. The menu reflects the diverse marine ecosystem with locally-caught fish and other aquatic delicacies. In addition to seafood, there are options catering to broader tastes.
We asked our hotel where to have dinner, and they recommended Deniz Restaurant — and we’re so glad they did! The location is fantastic, right by the sea, offering a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere. But what impressed me the most was the staff. The team looking after our table was incredibly attentive and highly professional — they truly elevated our dining experience. The mezes were delicious, especially the samphire (sea beans) — absolutely amazing. And the fried calamari was top-notch. I highly recommend this place!
S Y — Google review
Went there because of their reviews, worth it, especially their calamari was very fresh, their meze was fresh too. The only issue was their bread, would expect a newly baked bread. The staff are very attentive and the atmosphere is nice for an hour or two.
Tanya H — Google review
I have searched for the best fish restaurants in Izmir and this restaurant kept showing on top list so i gave it a try. To be honest the food in Izmir is more expensive than Istanbul we paid almost 150$ for 2 adults 2 kids and we left hungry. They only had 3-4 types of fish to choose from for a fish restaurant. Many varieties on the menu we asked for they said they did not have. A common thing among restaurants in Izmir is that they charge for couvre ( which is basically the use of utensils and plates) such a weird concept in my opinion and never seen it before. Would not recommend it for sure.
Zee B — Google review
İzmir Sea View Restaurant / If you're looking for a seafood restaurant with a stunning view, İzmir Deniz Restaurant stands out as one of the most beautifully located spots along the İzmir coastline. Especially at sunset, the sea glows in golden hues, creating a perfect setting for a romantic meal or a peaceful dinner with friends. The restaurant offers a refined ambiance and is popular among locals—always a good sign of authenticity. The service was attentive, and the environment was calm and sophisticated. While the sunset view is truly unforgettable and the setting feels upscale, there were some aspects that felt slightly underwhelming considering the price point. #IzmirSeaView #DenizRestaurant #SunsetDinner

I saw this place from a famous YouTuber video, as a tourist in Izmir I wanted to get a taste of Ege cuisine and Im glad I came to this restaurant the food quality and options were great and thanks to everyone in kitchen, however there are some things that really piss me off, first thing was Service, it was slow and highly biased, there were hidden charges which Are Illegal in Turkey like servis fee and charging 200+(7$)for just bringing water and plain bread, overall; the place the food and the atmosphere were great but at this price point and with all these added costs I recommend another place.
Pouya S — Google review
DO NOT EAT HERE The most disrespectful experience we have ever had. They bring several items to the table, which you do not order at the start, don’t communicate what they are for or that they are part of some “surcharge” they will apply to the bill at the end of your dinner, which is claimed to be “water, bread, olive” charge. We did not consume any of the items places on our table. We then didn’t have one of our meals delivered at all, but they put it on our bill, and service was woefully slow and I had to get up and pour my own wine. They didn’t even apologise for not bringing a meal to us but still tried to charge us for it. We questioned the charges at the end, which is where we were told about the “bread, olive, water” charge and for the meal we didn’t even receive. The waiters argued with us about the extra charge and wouldn’t let us pay until we paid it. This is appalling service for a restaurant with the reviews it has, and for somewhere our hotel recommended us to visit.
Y H — Google review
Honestly one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. The food was bland, poorly cooked, and felt like zero care went into it. For the prices they charge, the quality is shocking. There are far better places nearby; save your time and money and go elsewhere.Hands down one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. We paid nearly 17000 lira for food that was bland, poorly cooked, and served with zero care. The service was slow and dismissive, like we were inconveniencing them by even being there. For that kind of money, you’d expect quality, but instead it felt like a complete scam

Italian restaurant
Ristorante Pizzeria Venedik is a popular Italian restaurant in Izmir, known for its delicious pizza, pasta, and desserts. Since 1979, it has been a top choice for pizza lovers. The restaurant's cozy Venetian decor and traditional Italian dishes attract diners from all over.
I've visited this place twice. While the prices are a bit high, the food is excellent. Their specialty is pizza, but I personally love the Linguine Gamberi pasta. They give complimentary limoncello
Shirly C — Google review
Cool place, nice atmosphere. I ate lasagna, it was average not very good but still tasty. The soup was also nice but the tomato soup is not in turkish style but more like Italian kind. Pizzas were good. They offered us three lovely shots at the end which was very kind 🙋🏽‍♂️ also, it is a bit expensive but very chic inside! 🤓

I had an amazing pasta with fresh ingredients 🫠 My friends had pizza also very delicious, not heavy and a great portion for one person. 😍
Emine S — Google review
It was my second time at this pizzeria, surprisingly for Turkey, it didn’t get spoiled, even got better in my opinion. Prices are quite reasonable for this place, I really recommend trüflü burrata (my fav from now on). It was my birthday, and I didn’t like the place we chose (it was La Cigale), the staff at Venedik was very agreeable and welcoming, they even could speak English (though there was no need). The pizzeria was actually crowded, but we were sitting in a separate hall alone with my husband (gave me another special vibe). I was truly full, hopefully, I’ll try your dessert next time✨

A Michelin-listed pizza joint in the heart of İzmir. Hot, piping pizza filled to the edge with toppings is served in a casual, Italian atmosphere.
Jason L — Google review
Place where you can feel real Italian vibe. Pasta is really good, but carbonara was a little bit salty, recommend to ask for pepper. Pizza has thin, soft, tender dough. Fresh greens, good wine. Caramel dessert was not satisfying. Prices are also high (490₺ for cheese wheel). Service is little bit slowly and suspended. You every time need to attract attention of waiters. Staff speaks English a little.
Polina K — Google review
Be careful! It was okay. Nice staff and atmosfeer, the vegetarian tortellini was tasteful but a bit small. The only thing that really annoyed us that they didn't tell us the bread had to be paid: they just put it on our table but didn't bother to tell us we were going to get charged for it. This is cheating.

Staff is great although food could have an improvement. It doesn’t match with the price paid and I felt like in Switzerland. The service however, on a very positive note is incredible and they’re very friendly.

Without a doubt this place is a very nice place to chill, connect with people, and soak in the Izmir vibes. Food was just ok. Shrimps on avocado - the avocado was a bit ripe for my liking and lacked in salt. Lamb shank was good. The fried seafood overall was mediocre because frozen seafood were used for the preparation. It's European prices hence the harsher comments. The faultless part was the service - courteous staff despite our language barriers. At the end of the dinner, a generous serving of fruit was offered. 3 stars based on the food we ordered.

North Pier offers an exquisite dining experience with sophisticated flavors and impeccable presentation. The ambiance is elegant and intimate, perfect for a special night out. The restaurant prides itself on using the finest ingredients to create beloved Italian flavors with a simple cooking approach. Their wood-fired pizzas and daily handmade pastas are particularly noteworthy, complemented by freshly baked breads made from ancestral wheat flour sourced from Kastamonu.
Murano’s Kitchen in Alsancak is a lovely spot. We tried the mushroom and oyster fungi dish — earthy, well-seasoned and beautifully plated — and paired it with an Aperol Spritz that was light and refreshing. Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend for a casual evening out.

Management, if you read this, tell your staff that if they bring anything to the table that has to be charged- they have to let customers know about it (in our case, waiter poured water without asking us and then I found water in a bill). Then plz, we have chosen your afternoon tea but the price is not mentioned in a menu. We asked how much is it and waiter or a manager (guy was in a blue suit) said “let me check it”. Seriously… staff doesn’t know the prices of your lunch offer? And BTW he said it is 900 but in a bill it is 950. When the other waiter came to us and we said that we want to have afternoon tea, he said “ok! With 2 Prosecco”. But we told him plz bring the aperol, and his face was like he has never heard about even the existence of Aperol spritz. You have service charge by default included in a bill. Why? I didn’t want to leave this amount of tips. When I asked if it is possible to remove it the answer was “sorry it is already included to the whole bill”.

The seafood spaghetti was just bad. The pasta texture is not al dente at all, very mushy. It was also lack of taste. The amount of seafood was very little for 4xx ₺ It was my first time eating here and got already bad impression. The other dish was ok but the pasta was too thick.

the food was great, however medium meat was cooked well done, now i definitely know in Turkey i have to say rare to get medium, also the meat was cooked unevenly, they should tie a string to prevent that. Otherwise, one of the better restaurants I have been to in Turkey, the service is spectacular. Definitely should order the Tiramisu and Risotto was also cooked to perfection.

Loved it, food was excellent, drinks came a little late, service was exquisite! They didn't speak English though. Pricey for what it is.. but the taste and service honestly do justify the price. I've been looking for a classy Italian restaurant in Izmir for quite some time. Loved it!

Was looking for Italian options in Izmir and came across this one. Offers wide selection of food and drinks. Taste wise it was just fine. Staff was attentive but felt like over friendly as they tried to offer things without asking which was rude in my opinion. Overall atmosphere was okay but lacked Italian flare. Clean toilets available downstairs.

Really good Italian food, pretty big portions of salad and not so much of pasta, so I can recommend that collab. Good varieties of wine. Recommend to reserve a table, but need to call, they read WhatsApp rarely. Waiters speak English.
