Wildlife park
Nature & Parks
Destination for up-close viewing of snow monkeys in a secluded park accessible by long, scenic walk.
Slide 1 of 8
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stow Monkey Park is such a wonderful experience! The walk up to the park is beautiful — a shaded path along a peaceful stream surrounded by tall trees, which makes the journey as enjoyable as the destination. The entrance fee is very reasonable at just 800 yen. The park is well maintained, with public restroom and a free drinking water machine available, plus a nice little gift shop. Watching the monkeys up close in their natural setting was absolutely incredible — truly an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend!
Came here because of samsara! Knew it would be a magical place and it truly was. Forewarning, you can't guarantee that you'll see any monkeys. I got there and was told only 1 monkey is out. Got there and spent 15mins looking for him, to find he was hiding behind me and not in the bath! Lol Even without the monkeys it's a lovely spot with stunning views and really nice warm water! If you have any disabilities or struggle walking I'd reconsider. My old man has COPD and struggled to get there (we parked in the car park) otherwise it's just a good climb of stairs. Not much else there, I believe there used to be a restaurant and hotel. But looks closed down. Parking was cheap. Plenty of spots.
Second visit to park, both in November but many years apart........first time the monkeys did not come down from the mountain - mating season we were told !!! The visit of 17th November 2025 was especially enjoyable with a very large number of monkeys roaming around in the park and using the hot pool. It was particularly fortunate to be with the monkeys considering they had been absent from the park for several days before our visit. The 30 minute easy walk through the forest to the park was also a memorable experience. Anyone visiting Nagano should make a visit a priority.
Mixed feelings about this place. Firstly, the area itself is gorgeous. The walk to the park through the forest and past the geyser are beautiful. But the monkey park operation is quite small. I can see how this place would be packed instantly. Secondly, nothing much about any of this can be considered wild or natural. The hot spring pool there is man-made. And they lure the monkeys over with food via daily feeding sessions. That being said, we did manage to see 2 monkeys in the early morning who were just passing through (no food offered and not in the hot spring), so I will call that a win. But set expectations properly.
Look at these little pricks, they’ve got everything! The attention, the hot water baths, 2 meals a day from the park’s authority, free meds and on top of that, they tried to steal my camera. Despite all, they’re so lovable, I forgave them! The habitat of the snow monkeys is located at a 15-minute taxi ride from Yudanaka, followed by an enjoyable 30-minute walk through the woods on a well-maintained hilly gravel path to Jigokudani Yaen-Koen. Once out of the taxi and walking towards the park from the road, don’t miss the geysers here and there; they may surprise you anyways as they burst sporadically. Whenever you hear a drum-like sound, it’s only one of the adult monkeys running their 200-lbs or so (90 kg) down the hills, but don’t be scared as they are quite sociable. Do mind your pockets and accessories though, because they have some surprising pick-pocket skills and they’re not shy about them. As for the smaller ones, they run like crazy and play joyfully. One took my shoulder as a prop when jumping between 2 fences. When the big ones come out of the water, take a few steps back from them, because they skillfully shake-off the water on tourists; it seems to amuse them. Have fun and cheers!
Super cool! Unfortunately they don’t come out often in the autumn. I recommend winter! They posted a schedule to show the history of when monkeys have come over the last two months. We got lucky we saw 2 but apparently at peak you’d see 150 but still so worth it!
It’s not cold enough yet for the monkeys to go in the water so there is a chance you won’t see monkeys swimming or any monkeys at all. I have been told that in the start of december it starts getting cold enough. But it looks still very nice if there are some monkeys. Price is 800 yen. The walk takes about 30/40 minutes but it’s not a hard walk.
It was very nice to see the wildlife in their own environment! We had considered going to the zoo with our kid but this little walk in the mountains was so enjoyable. We almost didn’t get to see any monkeys but then just as we were about to leave, a few came down to say Konnichiwa! We feel very lucky!

Small ski resort but amazing snow quality, weekend are always crowded. There is free Wifi at the end of the chair lift.
Lifts are very outdated and there is only a small beginner slope. If you progress up the mountain and or want to explore other connected resorts, then you really must be at least intermediate level to enjoy this. Only one way down from the Hotel side of the resort if you aren’t ready for black diamond, which is an intermediate tight road full of snow boarders that have chopped it to pieces by mid morning. I don’t intend to come back but would stay in other areas of Okashiga Kogen
Beautiful resort! Definitely coming back. Best skiing in my life
Weather wasn't the best when we skied there (freezing cold and snowing heavily). Lifts are slow and old. Not many runs for beginners and some green runs are quite difficult. There is a Gondola to escape the weather and a few restaurants to choose from. Not an easy traverse to Yakebitaiyama
Excellent undiscovered and uncrowded resort with a variety of runs good for families with small kids. One huge complaint: most ski hills have the ashtray smoking pit right beside the entrance, these guys went one step further and connected the furnace intake to the smoking room so it pumps all the second hand smoke in to the restaurant and ski shop. Effin brilliant.
Nice selection of slopes und connection to rest of Shiga Kogen resort. The lifts are very outdated
You can rent snowshoes for 1000 yen and walk through the forest where there’s a road covered in snow. It was a beautiful experience.
So this is more a review of the mountain area itself. Overall awesome area to go to when visiting Shiga Kogen for boarding/skiing. It's definitely worth the short walk from Gondola 1. Highly recommend taking glade runs as the powder in the trees was awesome. I also took a lesson from the international ski school at the resort and really got a lot from it.

Experience is soo amazing!!🤩 The thrill was so exciting!! If your from the top of hill you can slide for almost 10~15 minutes or even more even if your fast. The snow slides are connected to each other. There’s a place called Skyland Station(a 10-minute ride up to the top of the hill) it’s soooo high!! It was exciting but I was soooo afraid of it 😳 😱 😆 !!! Just an aerophobia 😂 ,anyways it’s a FREE ride just use your card. You will also get a FREE 500Yen drinks 🍹 up in Skyland Station while experience the top of the mountains 😊 If your expert enough you can try the snow slide ( skiing) from Skyland station below. It’s very dangerous for me but you can try if you are expert enough!! Please be careful and enjoy!!! Yes ob course, there is a card uses for lifts, and they also provide night snow slides (skiing) but up to 9 pm only. From the top of Skyland Station there is still another snow slides up hill 😂 I though it was the end but still you can ride lifts and slide uphill 😂 I never expected that. They also provide foods for dinner and breakfast maybe additional around 2000~3000yen/day if I remember it correctly. Make sure to bring a copy of your covid certificate so you can get a discount. The rest of it 😉 Have a great day ahead!!!
Decent slopes with wide areas for dodging all of the snowboarders relaxing (???) on the slopes. However, the upper and lower areas of the mountain are split by an unbearably slow gondola ride that only operates once every 20 minutes. Plus, the only slopes connecting the upper and lower areas are three "advanced skiers only" areas (US equiv.: double or triple black diamond) that are too steep for most avid skiers/boarders. There are plenty of food options around the slopes, which is very nice, but expect resort prices (e.g., a Japanese pint will be ~¥1000)
Not a very large mountain resort but still fun. All of the runs are connected so you're able to ride from the top all the way down to the carpark if you want. Decent powder at the top even though it was quite sunny today. Rental boards/skis are not allowed on the runs right under the Sora Cafe (think it's due to bushland/trees) and you'll need a helmet if you plan to ride there. Not a lot of English speakers or signs outside of the hotels but we were able to get by. Most places (hotel, rentals, restaurants, ski passes) take card but the Yamazaki convenience store nearby doesn't (they do accept PayPay though). Take a shuttle from Yudanaka (free) or Iiyama (reserve ahead of time) to get here.
decent slopes for beginners and intermediate. the walk to the first ski lift is quite far and uphill
The slopes and snow conditions are decent. There are 4 beginner slopes, however due to a long holiday, it's a little busy. The view from the top is stunning (have to take a Gondola 🚠), and with the freezing temps, I warmly recommended the SORA terrace's Cafe Mocha ☕
Taking the Gondola to the top was a wonderful experience. We skied here during mid February, snow on the lower slopes can become hard and very slippery on sunny day but snow on the top mountain was steadily soft, powder and thick. There was more fun to either ski or snowboard among the forest which could only be found on the top!!
Not a very big mountain, but lots of fun regardless. The hardest course is called Kiotoshi and is only accessible from the peak and the staff require you to be wearing a helmet, so come prepared. They have lots of restaurants and cafes scattered around the mountain as well.
Apart from shredding in powdery snow, you can ride a gondola going to Sora Terrace and get good food with good refreshments with the best view.

I love Yokoteyama! Despite the slow ski lifts, the view from the lifts is insane! Once you get to the top of the mountain, the view is amazing on all four sides! There are mountains as far as the eye can see, and you might even get to see a sea of clouds! The crumpet shop inside is also amazing, so don’t miss a chance to enjoy those!
Here is the top of Mt. Yokote, easy to get the top by lift and or elevator. It’s fantastic to view Japanese Alps fro the top of Yokote, absolutely exclusive view.
view is wide open and spectacular. Cafe is cozy.
Beautiful and cozy place. Loved the views
(Translated by Google) This cafe is located on the second floor of the lift station. They serve CRUMPET, which looks like a pancake, but is actually a crispy bread dish with sauce and cream cheese on top. It was incredibly delicious, but they sold out by 2 PM (just in time). There's a decent amount of seating, but it can get full depending on the time of day. It takes a while for food to be served, but it's definitely worth a try. Unfortunately, the clouds obscured the view, but the wind was strong and I could see Yokoteyama Drive-In through the gaps, which was beautiful! This is Yakibitaiyama Snow Resort located at the northern end of the Shiga Kogen Central Area and the largest in the Shiga Kogen. When I visit Shiga Kogen by car, I sometimes get confused about where to park. It's quite difficult to find the car park even trying to use Google Maps. Here the Yakibitaiyama has a couple of large car parks which are free and easy to use. I visited on 2nd April 2023, it was cold enough in the early morning and the snow surface was in good condition. People enjoy the cherry blossoms and warm spring at the foot of the mountains but we can enjoy skiing at here in Shiga Kogen! Revisited on 24 Feb 2024, it was snowy last night and the snow covered the icy slopes, well it's a very difficult condition but enjoyed anyway. Also enjoyed other snow resorts connected by trails from Yakibitaiya.
Great skiing - lots of snow; no lift lines; not many people on the trails Only downside was the quad lift out of service so we couldn't ski the West side at all Cheaper to buy tickets from Skiosk or online than on-site (which is a bit odd?)
Terrible. I've been anticipating to visit for 1 year and only 2 green slopes and chairlifts are open today. Snow is too icy, there is not intention to use the snow cannons. I paid for the full price for the ski pass but I can use less than half the chairlifts; 2 out the 15 ski slopes. Don't visit.
Nice skiing. Not a lot of people. And very few foreigners.
Loved it, combined with Okushiga it makes a nice resort with a lot of variety. Nothing fancy, pure local skiing.
At Mount Yakebitai, the gondola takes you from the Prince Hotel to the top (abt 7 min). From the top, you can ski down with beautiful scenery (abt 10-20 min)
Short runs, slow lifts, green runs crowded with bus loads of ski school students. The region has had no investment for decades. There are much better areas to ski in Japan.
Powder world you can get the first track in the morning.

Nice sake! Taste all the sake, it's worth it!
The sakes were good and we bought a few bottles to take home but the tasting experience was interesting. We walked in the building and saw several employees sitting in a room but no one walked out to greet us. So we walked around inside the building and eventually found out that the tastings are self-service using a vending machine that takes 100 yen coins. We tried 3 of the sakes that were available for tasting then rang a bell to get an employee’s attention so we could buy a few bottles. Not much of a brewery/tasting experience but we enjoyed the sakes we bought.
We stoped by the brewery as part of a tour of Shibu onsen. The inside has some amazing woodwork and a little museum. We were able to try some sake and purchase some beers to take home. The staff was very helpful. I think the only thing that might make the experience somewhat better is having an area to sit and relax while you taste sake or drink the beer you purchase.
We drove to the building but wasn’t sure if it was the right place. It’s an traditional, authentic Japanese building. They offer two beer on tap which you need to pay and a self serving sake tasting. There is also a gallery upstairs. The lady was able to speak English and extremely helpful. We ended buying a few bottles of sake and beer.
Good to go if you have some time to spare. Many kinds of sake available for free testing, and there are English information sheets to explain the differences in raw material or brewing method of each type of sake. Beer is also available on tap. Price of the liquor is reasonable, and sake is sold in 300ml/720ml/1800ml bottles. You can buy some interesting beer glasses. Level 2 is a small art gallery with interesting exhibits
No tastings available at the brewery although they are very helpful with describing the various sakes if you want to buy a bottle. Small museum upstairs which is lovely, but nothing in English.
One of the best sake & craftbeer brewery in Japan. You can try sake from bottle or beer from tap (of course they're in good condition locally!!) then buy them. It's quite far from city, but worth visiting. Cash only.
Simple brewery as self service non guided. Free entry. Very nice but very small. Done in 15 mins.

A painful memory was when we were forced to walk barefoot in a big circle for a long time during a winter morning assembly in about 10 centimeters of snow. It still remains in my ``head.'' Destination for up-close viewing of snow monkeys in a secluded park accessible by long, scenic walk.

Delightfully quiet and beautiful. There was no one there except us and the snow.
Quiet, not a lot going on in the area outside of the skiing season! But we enjoyed the walk around while there in late April - very peaceful
(Translated by Google) On the outskirts of Shibu Onsen, or rather in a place overlooking the hot spring, you will find Onsenji Temple. The name of the temple feels perfectly suited to this location. Legend has it that during the Sengoku period, Takeda Shingen came here to heal his wounds after the Battle of Kawanakajima. As it is on high ground, the views are also amazing. If you are staying at Shibu Onsen, we recommend visiting Onsenji Temple in the mornings and evenings to watch the sunset and sunrise. It was built about 700 years ago, so it was a building with a lot of history and style. Anyway, how many stories are there about Shingen's hot springs in Yamanashi and Nagano? Am I the only one who feels like there isn't much value in Shingen's hidden hot springs all over the place? Well, coming here hasn't changed anything in me, but I'm happy to have come to a place related to hot springs. 3 stars.

The statue and shrine are in a quiet peaceful area full of cherry blossoms. Pay 100 yen to ring the huge World Peace Bell
This Buddhist temple has seen better days but was a lovely find in the hills above the ryokan neighborhood. We sadly visited during November and so the cherry blossom trees were not in bloom but as you can see form other people's pictures it would make for quite the sight to come up the temple stairs. Inside the staff will take you on a tour that includes beating a drum that drives away evil spirits as well as a series of bowls you ring in progressive order until you come to the main temple in the base of the statue. The staff were exuberant and did not lot the language barrier deter them from taking you along on the tour.
The Buddhist statue is worth a look if you are close by. Not as spectacular as the temples but still worth a look.
It is a beautiful place to visit and if you're keen do the walk and visit all three statues
Very peaceful and completely empty when we visited close to Christmas. Loved the huge cast bronze bell. Access to the Buddha base was locked, which was fine. Clean toilets. Nice outlook over Yamanouchi.
Peaceful , quiet place.
If you have time after visiting the monkey park, I suggest taking a stroll to see the grounds. You can avoid the steps by taking a left at the end of the block and enjoy the stroll up next to an apple orchard!
This is actually a replica of the original statue that stood here. During World War II, the original statue was melted down, and the metal was used to make bullets and weapons. This happened to lots of bronze statues throughout Japan during that time. It was rebuilt later on.

We visited the Time Izakaya and had a great dinner in a very relaxed atmosphere. The food was like home made and very delicious.
Not challenging at all. Even the black seems like a beginner can ski on. It took 5 minutes to get up the mountain and 2 minutes down. I am not impressed with the mountain but the view from the top is absolutely beautiful.
This is Ichinose "Diamond" Snow Resort. There are 3 areas in Ichinose Snow Resort. The Diamond is a small area and has a few gentle slopes, recommended for beginners and or kids for practice.
Great place to practice those carv wish the course would be longer
Awesome snow, great restaurant options and friendly staff
Great slopes and fast lift lines
Nice place to snowboard. Wide area.
Many beginners Go slow to avoid them
