Unique shrine enshrined within the cave by the sea.
A beautiful and magnificent temple, serene and shaded, with an atmosphere that evokes the temple’s former glory in the past.
Its a shrine with sprawling grounds comprising temples, ponds and fixtures. The environment is quiet and peaceful. Our guide shared that couting couples would come to the shrine for their dates too. We spent around 1-1/2 hours walking around and exploring after seeing the main shrine and camphor tree.
This is a very beautiful Shinto shrine. I would argue the most beautiful I've ever been to. This shrine is ranked 2nd in importance after Ise Jingu near Nagoya. I've visited there as well, however, I'd rate this as more physically beautiful. Both the nature and the architecture are stunning. The main shrine itself was under construction, though everywhere else was still visible. A number of sights stood out to me, such as the covered bridge over the river , the bridges in the pond, and the huge torii gates. I noticed an interesting tradition here that stood out to me. You clap four times while praying, unlike the usual two. There's also a spot with 3 shrines lined up in order left to right, and the tradition is to pray at each one in order.
A beautiful shrine with an atmosphere like Ise Jingu.
Such a lovely shrine! It’s the second most prestigious shrine after Ise Shrine in Mie. Part of it was under construction, but it was still nice to walk around the quiet area and snack at the places lined up outside the gates. Not as spacious as Ise Shrine, but still definitely worth a visit
Went for new year, was busy but no real queuing or waiting like you get at other shrines on new year's day. Very beautiful shrine, feels like you're stepping back hundreds of years into traditional Japan.
Usa-jingu in Oita is believed to be the first Shinto shrine in Japan in which Hachiman-ji, the god of military power, was enshrined. A Buddhist temple called Miroku-ji is also built next to it, which makes it the first shrine-temple ever. The main hall and the Kujaku Monkei are designated amongst Japan's National Treasures. When visiting, be sure to place your hands on the large camphor tree there to wish for success.

Slide 1 of 8
Visiting the Kyushu Wildlife Park African Safari was an absolutely thrilling experience! The drive-through safari allowed us to see majestic lions, elephants, giraffes, and more, up close from our car that it felt like a real African adventure! The highlight was the caged bus tour where we got to feed the lions, elephants, deer and more. It was an exhilarating and rare opportunity, especially for kids! But the surprises didn’t end there. The park’s interactive zone let us get up close with friendly horses, fluffy rabbits, and tiny hamsters. Those are definitely my kids’ favorite. The animals looked well-cared for, and the park was clean and well-organized. Totally worth it for families and animal lovers.
Amazing safari experience! We usually steer clear of such attractions, but here the animals looked relaxed and well-kept. Driving the full route in our own car was more than enough, so the feeding bus felt unnecessary (we even got a refund). Our kids (10 and 8 yo) loved it.
It was my first time visiting an open-concept zoo like this, and I truly enjoyed it! The safari is very spacious, and the animals look so much more at ease in the wide, open areas. Highly recommend joining the Jungle Bus feeding experience, you get to see the animals up close!
Wow wow wow! You can get really up close to the animals while being in the comfort of your car and at your own pace. Animals are well taken care of and there is ample space for them. Such an environment is more natural than being in zoos. Saw a lot of animals with their cubs and calves. 🥰 We spent about 2 hours including the safari and a smaller section where you can feed miniature horses, kangaroos and pet guinea pigs. This place closes at 4pm so I would suggest arriving before 2pm.
Very exciting, went with my kid. Advice is to arrive early to lineup for the official jungle bus. I arrive at 9 and got the jungle bus spot at noon. It’s a very unique experience.
Amazing experience and highly recommended! You can either take the park's Safari bus, or drive your own car into the enclosures and see the animals up close. There are lions, bears, giraffes and many other kinds of animals. The Safari bus is very popular, so you will need to arrive early to get a seat. You can get to feed the animals on the safari bus. Otherwise, just drive through in your own vehicle, which is just as fun and you can move along at your own pace. A must to visit for all visitors to Fukuoka/Beppu/Kyushu!
As part of our Day Tour trip, we arrived at the Wildlife Park in a Tour Bus. It was a exciting experience driving-through the park in our Bus allowing us to move around in the Bus seeing and taking photos of the animals. A stop-over at the Park’s interactive zone with rabbits and hamster added to the fun of the trip.
Park opens at 9am. Queue outside the park with cars starts earlier. Self-drive starts at 9:30am. Drive up close to the animals present. Saw the giraffe, elephant, lion, tiger, cheetah, zebra, deer, etc. After the drive, do consider heading to the miniature horses (which you can feed by buying carrots for a fee using tongs), the cat saloon (entry for adults 500 yen, children below 4 free) or the dog saloon (entry 500 yen, children below 4 not allowed).

Ajimu oita japan 🇯🇵 The best delicious wine 🍷 Let’s kanpai 🥂
The only disappointing part was that there was no free wine tasting. Be sure to climb up to the highest point above the vineyards to get a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains.
Wine tasting is free. But the wines on offer were not at all to my taste. And the prices listed were higher than what they deserve.
(Translated by Google) Unlike before, tasting now costs 1,000 yen per person, but there's no limit on the number of samples you can try, so you can relax on a bench outside and compare different wines. They also sell brandy-flavored soft serve ice cream, which is also delicious. One suggestion: I'd like them to sell coffee and other drinks to drivers so they don't have to waste time. The waiting time is quite long.
(Translated by Google) This is my favorite winery in Kyushu. I almost always attend the new wine festival and barrel opening. All of the wines are delicious, but more than anything, the air here is pleasant. If you visit early in the morning, it's even more refreshing than during the day, and you'll be soothed by the beautiful songs of the wild birds. The historic glassware on display in the barrel storehouse is gorgeous and beautiful, and it's fun just to look at it. While the paid tastings are fun, the brandy soft serve ice cream sold at the shop is a recommended dessert that you should definitely try. Beautiful experience. A very short, easy walk (just a little slippery in places if wet). You walk through a tunnel of green with streams of sun seeping through illuminating the path. The cool mist freshens a you walk through to an opening where you see the flowing waters cascading to a still pool. You will find opportunities for publication-worthy photos from every angle.
Beautiful landmark, short distance at foot from the parking lot but really enjoyable nonetheless.
One of the nicest waterfalls I’ve seen in Japan. Walk is easy but slippery. Water is beautiful and chilly. There was one other couple when we were there. Can’t recommend enough.
Another hidden gem, very worth the visit if you are in the area for the safari anyways, glad we went. Slippery path for scenic hidden waterfall, so be careful, but blown away by how zen and secluded it feels. Wish we stayed a bit longer, a bit scary as very unpopulated
It is a waterfall within a waterfall. I truly enjoyed the hike with my wife. not too long. We are both retirees. It is however quite slippery especially when we need to walk across a waterfall towards the 85m waterfall. Wow.
It's a short but challenging walk to the fall. It's slippery w moss and rocks along the way. I would recommend proper shoes instead of sneakers. White sneakers is definitely not recommended! But otherwise, an excellent trek and view of the fall :)
Spectacular! Tall waterfall that is accessible. If you dare to brave the cold, you can even swim in the pool. We had our lunch at the resting area / parking. Parking fee is ¥300. Beautiful cherry blossoms in the the vicinity of the waterfall. Nice! 😉
Awesome waterfall. Have been there many times. Its always fun to go with friends. Parking and toilets are available. The main waterfall is in a 5 minute walking distance from the parking. Definitely recommend to go visit. Need to drive there as no buses ply to the waterfall, plus the drive is pleasant and full of beautiful scenery. Taking a few snacks and doing a simple dry picnic is also a good idea.

USA City writes in Japanese “USA”. There is a quite splendid USA shrine in the country nearby. Moreover, the large salamander of a natural monument is bred in the station on this road, and it is possible to watch it. The parking lot is also spacious and easy to use. In addition, there are many old stone bridges in this district, and it is still used in the current service.
The views are great and also the food.
Lots of food, hot and cold drinks. Clean toilets and food court.
(Translated by Google) Even though it was just after 12:00 in the middle of Golden Week, there was no food such as bento boxes anymore. There were a lot of customers inside the station - the parking lot was full and there were a lot of bikers - it's certainly a popular roadside station. As someone who finally got there after being too hungry,... I had no choice but to buy a bag of peanut mochi and some tea. No, this is surprisingly good. Peanut mochi will fill your stomach. Next time I would like to have this as a souvenir. The restrooms were clean even though there were a lot of people there, and the staff at the store were kind enough to see me crying because I didn't have my lunch box. Thank you very much. Also, the tea from Watanabeen in Shimoge, Ajimu-cho, Usa City was very delicious! The best tea I've bought recently, 80g 1080 yen There were a lot of fresh foods, but it was getting hot so I couldn't buy them because I had a long way to go home.I'm sorry, but they were shiny green onions for a little over 100 yen. Really interesting museum on northern Kyushu’s history. Beautiful layout. The permanent exhibition as of July 2023 is focused on the religious history of the area from the Stone Age to about the 19th century. Lots of great information on Buddhist and Shinto practice in the area, with a focus on the spread of Buddhism and historical worship. English signage for the majority of the museum either posted on walls or in the free guide. Most of the translations are very good. Staff is very helpful, but don’t expect English speakers. There are two projection presentations done at certain times while in the museum, check the schedule in the entrance hall for the one on the main Buddha statue. There is also a small library under the observation lobby. We were the only ones there when we went on Saturday afternoon. You can’t get there by public transit, but the taxi from Usa Jingu was ¥770.

There were also other impressive exhibits, such as a replica of a rock-carved Buddha and a model of Usa Shrine. Beautifull Weiss and incredible similitud!

I only saw it briefly while passing by last summer, but hearing how this bridge was built over a hundred years ago is simply astonishing. While taking a short break at Roadside Station INNAI nearby, I read the descriptions and looked at photos of other bridges in the area. Now I’m looking forward to where I might go this summer.

There is a parking lot just past the bridge, and you can also take photos from the promenade under the bridge. The piers are long and beautiful. (Translated by Google) Usa has many stone bridges and seems to be a tourist attraction, and I've been curious about the signboard indicating this for some time. The first stone bridge I visited this time was Torii Bridge. It is said to be called the Lady of the Stone Bridge because of its five piers and its beautiful shape. There was some grass growing naturally, so I felt that it would become even more beautiful if it was removed. It was a bridge that hung right next to a modern, solid bridge, and I was able to cross it. Perhaps because there are many people visiting as tourists, there are parking lots, restrooms, signboards with explanations, and stores nearby. The parking lot is free and can accommodate about 5 cars. As a side note, this bridge seems to be the most downstream of the stone bridges worth seeing, but I was told that there was another ``Ichi-no-hashi Bridge'' about 2.5km away, so I wanted to visit there as well. It may also be a bridge that confuses visitors. (Translated by Google) This is the Yokozuna Futabayama Memorial Museum in Usa City, Oita Prefecture. It's beautiful and easy to understand. Yokozuna Futabayama held the title of Yokozuna from 1938 to 1945, winning a record 12 makuuchi championships (when there were two tournaments per year), and winning 69 consecutive matches from 1936 to 1939 (including a five-tournament undefeated streak). At the time, he gained national popularity beyond the realm of professional sumo. I think it's no exaggeration to say that up until the Showa era, he was the most respected figure in the sumo world. I've been watching sumo regularly since around 1970, and up until the mid-Heisei era, there were still people alive who had seen Futabayama during his active career, so whenever he was mentioned on TV or in magazines, everyone would praise him. I got the impression that he was respected and almost deified. As for Futabayama's record, since there are now six tournaments per year, if you simply multiply that by three, you get 36 wins. Hakuho has now won 45 tournaments, surpassing Futabayama. Hakuho's record for consecutive wins is 63, so Futabayama still holds the record (though Hakuho also managed four consecutive undefeated tournaments). Before the war, the Osaka and Nagoya tournaments were considered "semi-basho," and if you include these, Futabayama had a winning streak of 87 from 1937 to 1938. If you're interested in sumo at Futaba no Sato, we recommend a visit. The facility is closed on the third Monday of every month (if the third Monday falls on a national holiday, it will be closed the following day instead). It's also closed over the New Year period, so please check.

There are many insects and snakes on the road from the entrance to the temple to the visitor reception, and on the road to the inner sanctuary, so you will need courage if you are not good with them. Also, if you go to the back of the temple with determination to not be outdone by the exterior of the main hall, which is probably also the visitor reception, you will be greeted by a magnificent Buddha statue and will be impressed. After that, they were defeated by the Genji clan and seven Taira clan members died. The surviving Taira clan members buried their dead soldiers in the mound. The mound became the Heike Seven Tomb, and Kadowaki-no-Kaishu, while maintaining the mound, invested his own money and, at the tomb of Kiyomori in Shimonoseki, chanted sutras to transfer Kiyomori's soul into the stone, erected Kiyomori's tombstone, and buried the stone containing Kiyomori's soul under the tombstone. Tombstones for Norimori and the seven Heike clan members who died were erected. Various improvements have been made to the area around the Heike Seven Tombs, and to console the souls of the Heike clan, a Kagura hall and a rest area for worshippers have been set up, along with many photographs of worshippers and mysterious photographs.

However, this Daizenji Temple is located at the southern foot of the mountain, facing north. That's not all. Among the many Zen temples of the Rinzai sect, this is the only Soto sect temple. In addition, many of the Soto sect temples in Usa City are located at the end of Senpukuji Temple in Kunisaki, and it was opened by the fifth master of Kozanji Temple, Kigai Ryoyu, in Chofu Town, Yamaguchi Prefecture. This was in the early Edo period. At the time of the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism ordinance in the early Meiji period, a storm of anti-Buddhism protests broke out in Usa, and many valuable cultural properties related to shrines were destroyed. The statue of Jōroku Yakushi Nyorai from the main hall of Mirokuji Temple has been moved to Daizenji Temple. It was designated as a national important cultural property in March 1989 (the statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva was moved to Gokurakuji Temple). Other statues related to Usamiya Mirokuji Temple include Nikko Bosatsu, Gekko Bosatsu, Fudo Myoo, and Aizen Myoo.
