The Usa Jingu Shinto Shrine, constructed in the early 8th century, is a remarkable site that boasts an impressive collection of cultural relics. The well-maintained gardens and shrines are breathtaking, and visitors can witness captivating performances on site. Despite some construction work being underway during my visit, it was still a delightful experience to explore the serene surroundings and indulge in local snacks from vendors outside the gates.
Unique shrine enshrined within the cave by the sea.
Alex W — Google review
A beautiful and magnificent temple, serene and shaded, with an atmosphere that evokes the temple’s former glory in the past.
PoOm — Google review
Its a shrine with sprawling grounds comprising temples, ponds and fixtures. The environment is quiet and peaceful. Our guide shared that couting couples would come to the shrine for their dates too. We spent around 1-1/2 hours walking around and exploring after seeing the main shrine and camphor tree.
Mark Y — Google review
This is a very beautiful Shinto shrine. I would argue the most beautiful I've ever been to. This shrine is ranked 2nd in importance after Ise Jingu near Nagoya. I've visited there as well, however, I'd rate this as more physically beautiful. Both the nature and the architecture are stunning. The main shrine itself was under construction, though everywhere else was still visible. A number of sights stood out to me, such as the covered bridge over the river , the bridges in the pond, and the huge torii gates. I noticed an interesting tradition here that stood out to me. You clap four times while praying, unlike the usual two. There's also a spot with 3 shrines lined up in order left to right, and the tradition is to pray at each one in order.
Nathan F — Google review
A beautiful shrine with an atmosphere like Ise Jingu.
Bethany J — Google review
Such a lovely shrine! It’s the second most prestigious shrine after Ise Shrine in Mie. Part of it was under construction, but it was still nice to walk around the quiet area and snack at the places lined up outside the gates. Not as spacious as Ise Shrine, but still definitely worth a visit
Maya S — Google review
Went for new year, was busy but no real queuing or waiting like you get at other shrines on new year's day. Very beautiful shrine, feels like you're stepping back hundreds of years into traditional Japan.
Andrew M — Google review
Usa-jingu in Oita is believed to be the first Shinto shrine in Japan in which Hachiman-ji, the god of military power, was enshrined. A Buddhist temple called Miroku-ji is also built next to it, which makes it the first shrine-temple ever. The main hall and the Kujaku Monkei are designated amongst Japan's National Treasures. When visiting, be sure to place your hands on the large camphor tree there to wish for success.

Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari, located between Beppu and Yufuin, offers a thrilling safari experience where visitors can drive through the vast park in secure jungle buses to see exotic animals like lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants, and more up close. The park also features interactive zones where guests can touch kangaroos and ride horses.
Visiting the Kyushu Wildlife Park African Safari was an absolutely thrilling experience! The drive-through safari allowed us to see majestic lions, elephants, giraffes, and more, up close from our car that it felt like a real African adventure! The highlight was the caged bus tour where we got to feed the lions, elephants, deer and more. It was an exhilarating and rare opportunity, especially for kids! But the surprises didn’t end there. The park’s interactive zone let us get up close with friendly horses, fluffy rabbits, and tiny hamsters. Those are definitely my kids’ favorite. The animals looked well-cared for, and the park was clean and well-organized. Totally worth it for families and animal lovers.
Sorlo S — Google review
Amazing safari experience! We usually steer clear of such attractions, but here the animals looked relaxed and well-kept. Driving the full route in our own car was more than enough, so the feeding bus felt unnecessary (we even got a refund). Our kids (10 and 8 yo) loved it.
Boaz G — Google review
It was my first time visiting an open-concept zoo like this, and I truly enjoyed it! The safari is very spacious, and the animals look so much more at ease in the wide, open areas. Highly recommend joining the Jungle Bus feeding experience, you get to see the animals up close!
Silvia K — Google review
Wow wow wow! You can get really up close to the animals while being in the comfort of your car and at your own pace. Animals are well taken care of and there is ample space for them. Such an environment is more natural than being in zoos. Saw a lot of animals with their cubs and calves. 🥰 We spent about 2 hours including the safari and a smaller section where you can feed miniature horses, kangaroos and pet guinea pigs. This place closes at 4pm so I would suggest arriving before 2pm.
Susan K — Google review
Very exciting, went with my kid. Advice is to arrive early to lineup for the official jungle bus. I arrive at 9 and got the jungle bus spot at noon. It’s a very unique experience.
Stephen C — Google review
Amazing experience and highly recommended! You can either take the park's Safari bus, or drive your own car into the enclosures and see the animals up close. There are lions, bears, giraffes and many other kinds of animals. The Safari bus is very popular, so you will need to arrive early to get a seat. You can get to feed the animals on the safari bus. Otherwise, just drive through in your own vehicle, which is just as fun and you can move along at your own pace. A must to visit for all visitors to Fukuoka/Beppu/Kyushu!
Cheong N — Google review
As part of our Day Tour trip, we arrived at the Wildlife Park in a Tour Bus. It was a exciting experience driving-through the park in our Bus allowing us to move around in the Bus seeing and taking photos of the animals. A stop-over at the Park’s interactive zone with rabbits and hamster added to the fun of the trip.
James W — Google review
Park opens at 9am. Queue outside the park with cars starts earlier. Self-drive starts at 9:30am. Drive up close to the animals present. Saw the giraffe, elephant, lion, tiger, cheetah, zebra, deer, etc. After the drive, do consider heading to the miniature horses (which you can feed by buying carrots for a fee using tongs), the cat saloon (entry for adults 500 yen, children below 4 free) or the dog saloon (entry 500 yen, children below 4 not allowed).

Kumano Magaibutsu is a remarkable site featuring two large Buddhist relief sculptures carved into a cliff during the late Heian or early Kamakura period. These impressive 6m and 8m figures of the Dainichi Buddha and Fudo-o-o are Japan's largest of this type. Accessible via stone stairs, which according to legend were built overnight by an ogre, reaching the carvings requires some effort but offers a rewarding experience. The 11.
The carvings in the side of a mountain are pretty amazing to look at. The stone stairs are very uneven and pretty steep, but also really cool to walk on. There is a fee (¥300) to enter. Recommend grabbing a walking stick at the ticket window. It comes in handy when coming down the uneven stones. It takes about 15-20 min to walk one way to the top.
Iwakuni F — Google review
11.5km trek around the peninsula and a nice Buddha face carved into a cliff face? Better than Mount rushmore. I don't want to rush and I want more! It's quite cool that after years of weathering the face is still looking dapper. One star off because the trek wasn't too friendly if you aren't fit, like me after eating all that ramen. Please press like if you liked this review.
Jonathan L — Google review
The upper part of the staircase is like a random stone pile up, which is a little hard to climb up. You should get a walking pole at the entrance.
Hashizaki S — Google review
The steep stone walkway is no joke! Don’t be brave and just listen to the advise and use a walking stick which is free and available from the ticket office.
Stamford — Google review
Buddhas in the cliff face. A unique and stunning place, with an enjoyable walk up to the top

Komezuka is a picturesque 50-meter high volcanic cone that offers walking trails in its vicinity. The lush green grass covering the 80-meter-high slopes changes color with the seasons, making for a mesmerizing sight. The summit dip resembles a perfectly round ball and seems out of place in the caldera. Legend has it that Kengo Ryumei was formed by stacking harvested rice, creating a depression at the top by giving rice to the poor.

Higashi Shiiya Falls is a picturesque natural attraction located in Yamato, Kumamoto on Kyushu Island. The 85m-high waterfall is surrounded by cliffs and offers a stunning sight, especially when crowned by a rainbow as the water crashes down onto the rocks. Visitors can enjoy a nice walking trail to reach the falls, but should be cautious of slippery paths and wear sensible shoes.
Beautiful experience. A very short, easy walk (just a little slippery in places if wet). You walk through a tunnel of green with streams of sun seeping through illuminating the path. The cool mist freshens a you walk through to an opening where you see the flowing waters cascading to a still pool. You will find opportunities for publication-worthy photos from every angle.
Jyson L — Google review
Beautiful landmark, short distance at foot from the parking lot but really enjoyable nonetheless.
Théo D — Google review
One of the nicest waterfalls I’ve seen in Japan. Walk is easy but slippery. Water is beautiful and chilly. There was one other couple when we were there. Can’t recommend enough.
טום כ — Google review
Another hidden gem, very worth the visit if you are in the area for the safari anyways, glad we went. Slippery path for scenic hidden waterfall, so be careful, but blown away by how zen and secluded it feels. Wish we stayed a bit longer, a bit scary as very unpopulated
Philip L — Google review
It is a waterfall within a waterfall. I truly enjoyed the hike with my wife. not too long. We are both retirees. It is however quite slippery especially when we need to walk across a waterfall towards the 85m waterfall. Wow.
Joh H — Google review
It's a short but challenging walk to the fall. It's slippery w moss and rocks along the way. I would recommend proper shoes instead of sneakers. White sneakers is definitely not recommended! But otherwise, an excellent trek and view of the fall :)
Joanne T — Google review
Spectacular! Tall waterfall that is accessible. If you dare to brave the cold, you can even swim in the pool. We had our lunch at the resting area / parking. Parking fee is ¥300. Beautiful cherry blossoms in the the vicinity of the waterfall. Nice! 😉
Shirley N — Google review
Awesome waterfall. Have been there many times. Its always fun to go with friends. Parking and toilets are available. The main waterfall is in a 5 minute walking distance from the parking. Definitely recommend to go visit. Need to drive there as no buses ply to the waterfall, plus the drive is pleasant and full of beautiful scenery. Taking a few snacks and doing a simple dry picnic is also a good idea.

Nestled along the route to Usa City, Michi-no-eki Innai is a charming roadside station that offers travelers a delightful pit stop. Although I was eager to see the giant salamander rumored to be housed here, I learned it had sadly passed on. Instead, I marveled at its impressive stuffed replica on display.
I love the place
Tamtam T — Google review
USA City writes in Japanese “USA”. There is a quite splendid USA shrine in the country nearby. Moreover, the large salamander of a natural monument is bred in the station on this road, and it is possible to watch it. The parking lot is also spacious and easy to use. In addition, there are many old stone bridges in this district, and it is still used in the current service.

Lots of food, hot and cold drinks. Clean toilets and food court.
Steven P — Google review
(Translated by Google) Even though it was just after 12:00 in the middle of Golden Week, there was no food such as bento boxes anymore. There were a lot of customers inside the station - the parking lot was full and there were a lot of bikers - it's certainly a popular roadside station. As someone who finally got there after being too hungry,... I had no choice but to buy a bag of peanut mochi and some tea. No, this is surprisingly good. Peanut mochi will fill your stomach. Next time I would like to have this as a souvenir. The restrooms were clean even though there were a lot of people there, and the staff at the store were kind enough to see me crying because I didn't have my lunch box. Thank you very much. Also, the tea from Watanabeen in Shimoge, Ajimu-cho, Usa City was very delicious! The best tea I've bought recently, 80g 1080 yen There were a lot of fresh foods, but it was getting hot so I couldn't buy them because I had a long way to go home.I'm sorry, but they were shiny green onions for a little over 100 yen. Really interesting museum on northern Kyushu’s history. Beautiful layout. The permanent exhibition as of July 2023 is focused on the religious history of the area from the Stone Age to about the 19th century. Lots of great information on Buddhist and Shinto practice in the area, with a focus on the spread of Buddhism and historical worship. English signage for the majority of the museum either posted on walls or in the free guide. Most of the translations are very good. Staff is very helpful, but don’t expect English speakers. There are two projection presentations done at certain times while in the museum, check the schedule in the entrance hall for the one on the main Buddha statue. There is also a small library under the observation lobby. We were the only ones there when we went on Saturday afternoon. You can’t get there by public transit, but the taxi from Usa Jingu was ¥770.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but the actual statue is quite large and impressive. Going further in, you'll find a variety of exhibits organized by theme. There were many exhibits, and they were quite impressive. Please note that photography is prohibited within some exhibits. The museum also has an exhibition lobby, a library, and a coloring area, making it a well-equipped museum. It's definitely worth the admission fee. I highly recommend visiting. There was also a wide selection of related works, and I was able to learn about the historical background of ancient swords in Kyushu and Oita. I also viewed the permanent exhibition. The Great Hall of Fukiji Temple is the oldest wooden building in Kyushu. It has a life-size reproduction of its original appearance, and the dazzling seated Amida Buddha statue is captivating. There were also other impressive exhibits, such as a replica of a rock-carved Buddha and a model of Usa Shrine. Through the exhibits and explanatory texts, I learned about the history of "prayer" that lives on in this region. Since I spent time on the special exhibition, I had to rush through the permanent exhibition. Still, the impact of the exhibits and the explanations were both amazing, and I'd like to return at a more leisurely pace. (Translated by Google) Visited on 2025.03.09. I happened to be passing by so I stopped by. It's probably crowded during the season, but today there was no one there and the teahouse was closed. I felt like I had it all to myself and was able to take a leisurely stroll. The river surface, flowing thinly and smoothly over the bedrock and sparkling in the sunlight, was a charming sight. When it gets a little warmer, I want to go for a walk in the stream. Jigoku Onsen Seifusou is a sophisticated hot spring inn located in Aso, Kumamoto. The inn offers communal indoor and outdoor baths, a restaurant, and cooking classes. It is known for its modern system and mixed bathing that is popular among young people. The open-air mixed bath features a 48-degree sulfur spring and a smooth mud bath. Both men and women are required to wear bathing suits, making it accessible for all visitors.
MUST VISIT!!! We visited the day-use public onsen. Works till 5pm. Crazy place, you sit outside in boiling volcanic waters, soil is shaking under you, you breathe fresh forest air and enjoy surroundings, deep yourself into a cold bath afterwards and repeat a few times! There are 2 facilities: common for men and women where they give you a swimming outfit for a small fee and a separate gender bath, we could not visit unfortunately. If you go up the hill from the onsen with your car, you can see wild deers :)
Kirill S — Google review
Amazing experience at this historic onsen that has been rebuilt. The bath is very special, with volcanic clay coming with the water, though the clay level is much less now than in some of the pictures during my visit. The highlight of the stay is our terrific Hanare room, the detached room. It is so spacious and luxurious and feels like such a wonderful and relaxing cabin to escape from the city. The meals were terrific and some of the best I have ever had in Japan and in the world. The Yamakudo dinner with the Aso aka ushi skewers were phenomenal and I have never tasted beef this good. The breakfast was also very complete and splendid and both meals were absolute experiences. The owner chef and his team were very welcoming, kind, and did their best to speak with us considering our limited Japanese. We felt very welcome and kindly treated at all times, and this is one of the best experiences we have ever had in a ryokan. Top recommended!
Skyy S — Google review
Absolutely loved staying here. The ryokan is a nice juxtaposition between the new and old. It is a 200 year old ryokan that was destroyed 7 years ago and was completely rebuild. The light wood is new and the dark wood is salvaged from the old structure. There is a single sex onsen and a mixed gender onsen. Both are open aired. The water composition is very good and the temperature is hot. pH is 2.8. You can smell a faint hint of sulfur in the air. It doesn’t smell bad. Just of boiled eggs. The food was really good. We had duck hotpot for dinner and it was delicious. The rice is the nicest I have ever eaten. Cooked in charcoal and every grain is delicious. Breakfast was also yummy especially the French toast with fermented Japanese butter which made it taste like Gorgonzola.

A really nice osen deep into the mountains. The private rooms smell rich of wood which is beautiful. 2nd night the owner cooked in front of us and shared his experiences alongside his amazing dinner course. They have private women and men’s public onsen. Private Onsen is also in the rooms. For mixed onsen ladies and men wear coverings which makes the experience much nicer. It consists of hot, warm and cold onsen it’s great for joints and very relaxing. If you can drive I would highly recommend this onsen

Heaven in the middle of paradise. Screams class everywhere. Food is awesome; pvt rooms offered, and chalets are superbly thought out. Simple and very elegantly done. Each one has it's own private hot spring bath. Japanese breakfast is a wonderful experience.

(Translated by Google) This is the Yokozuna Futabayama Memorial Museum in Usa City, Oita Prefecture. It's beautiful and easy to understand. Yokozuna Futabayama held the title of Yokozuna from 1938 to 1945, winning a record 12 makuuchi championships (when there were two tournaments per year), and winning 69 consecutive matches from 1936 to 1939 (including a five-tournament undefeated streak). At the time, he gained national popularity beyond the realm of professional sumo. I think it's no exaggeration to say that up until the Showa era, he was the most respected figure in the sumo world. I've been watching sumo regularly since around 1970, and up until the mid-Heisei era, there were still people alive who had seen Futabayama during his active career, so whenever he was mentioned on TV or in magazines, everyone would praise him. I got the impression that he was respected and almost deified. As for Futabayama's record, since there are now six tournaments per year, if you simply multiply that by three, you get 36 wins. Hakuho has now won 45 tournaments, surpassing Futabayama. Hakuho's record for consecutive wins is 63, so Futabayama still holds the record (though Hakuho also managed four consecutive undefeated tournaments). Before the war, the Osaka and Nagoya tournaments were considered "semi-basho," and if you include these, Futabayama had a winning streak of 87 from 1937 to 1938. If you're interested in sumo at Futaba no Sato, we recommend a visit. The facility is closed on the third Monday of every month (if the third Monday falls on a national holiday, it will be closed the following day instead). It's also closed over the New Year period, so please check. Ryuganji is a hidden gem that surprises visitors with its serene and sacred atmosphere. The hall houses three remarkable Buddha statues, carved from a single tree, exuding an indescribable aura. Despite some neglect in the temple at the foot of the mountain, Ryuganji remains an essential site for those seeking tranquility and spiritual connection.

(Translated by Google) There is an Okunoin temple that is considered one of Japan's three major Nageire-do halls (the entire hall is built into a natural rock cave). It is said that the buildings other than the inner temple were destroyed by the Christian feudal lord Otomo Sorin. The path to Okunoin is a series of somewhat steep stairs, but I think it will take about 10 to 15 minutes each way. You can go up to the inner temple by opening the side door, and when you sit on the throne, you will see the wooden (single carved) figures of Fudo Myoo, Amida Nyorai, and Yakushi Nyorai. It was very beautiful. I think it's a place worth seeing, with the Nageire Hall and the wooden Buddha statue, so I'd like many people to visit. It is a breathtaking water fall in Fukino, Usa which is a one and half hour drive from Oita. The road to the waterfall from the mainroad is narrow and little bit tricky. So you need to be very careful with your driving. Once you enter tge parking lot you will see that why it is worth all the trouble to get there. We went there on a weekend and were quite a few people there. There is a fine resting area and well maintained restrooms in the parking lot. No need to buy tickets to enter. It is a short walk from the parking lot to the waterfall. On the way to the waterfall you will find some child friendly natural pools. It is the most beautiful waterfall i have visited in Oita. There is a side walk where you cango behind the waterfall. There are some places that are slippery but altogether it is a safe walk. I wouldn't recommend swimming in the pool because for me it seemed that some areas are too deep. But there are some places down the stream. If one wants to get in the water.

Although the river is covered with rocks, you can see potholes created by the flow of time, giving it a sense of authenticity. There was also a storefront, which could be seen from the middle height of the bridge. The Doburoku Festival began in 710, and is famous for serving worshipers with Doburoku, which is said to be an elixir of eternal life and longevity. Touya events in Kunisaki are events in which specific families called ``Shinmoto'' take turns in the role of ``Touya'' and are involved in the management of rituals, rather than leaving everything to the Shinto priests. This ritual organization retains a strong historical aspect dating back to the Middle Ages, and is a rare ritual organization even in Japan. The shrine is up the stone steps from the torii gate, and on the way there is a statue of the Nio, which is a symbol of Kunisaki shrines. Once you pass through the torii gate, you will see the guardian dogs and Nio statues that protect the enshrined deity, and then go up the stone steps to reach the worship hall. There are many guardian dogs dedicated to the temple grounds. Judging from its origin, it appears to be a shrine that has prospered and been maintained under the blessings of many feudal lords and other powerful people. (Translated by Google) This shrine is known for its Doburoku Festival, one of Japan's most unusual festivals, which has continued for over 1,300 years since 710. It is a festival in which shrine parishioners offer doburoku, made by parishioners, to the gods in hopes of a good harvest and good health.During the festival, worshipers also offer them to the gods. Doburoku is only allowed to be brewed in a few places in Japan, and it's said to be the only one in Kyushu. It's such a sake shrine, but the deities enshrined are Qiongiki no Mikoto and Sarutahiko Okami. Anyway, it's quiet when there's no festival. It even feels like a sacred atmosphere. If you want to visit the shrine, I recommend going on a day other than the festival. Nature & Parks
Wama Seaside Park is a coastal area where visitors can enjoy clam digging and collecting mate shellfish. The park offers parking spaces, but it's recommended to find street parking due to limited availability. Entrance fees are 700 yen for adults and 300 yen for children, with additional fees for renting tools like hoes and rakes. Visitors can explore the coast to find clams of various sizes, with more opportunities further out. However, exceeding the allowed amount may incur extra charges.

Depending on the time of year, long-eared owls can be seen lurking, so those with good eyesight can spot them. The beach is shallow, the visibility is good, the soil and sand are soft, and the entire park area is fenced, so it's unlikely that you'll get lost or wander off. Points to note There is a possibility of injury due to a lot of floating debris. Snakes are rarely seen. Basically, you can't handle fire. The park is a bit athletic, so it's dangerous at heights, but I think it can be prevented if someone is there with an adult. There are no trash cans, so you basically have to take your food home with you. If you include the beach, park, and clam hunting, it's quite a large park. We are not sure if camping is possible, but please contact Usa City Hall. You may not be able to catch many clams, so if you go there, I think it's better to go for the mate shells (you'll need smooth salt and a special digging tool that allows you to clearly see the hole when digging). 佐田京石, also known as Sada Megaliths, is a significant site located on Mt. Yonegami in Japan. The area is home to a world heritage-level megalithic culture and features huge stones with a strong presence. It is believed to hold important power and is associated with the three goddesses and the three stars of Orion. The site offers a serene atmosphere with clean restrooms and ample parking facilities for visitors.

If it were a large regional ritual site, later generations would probably build a shrine there and it would become the object of worship for the shrine. It does not have a sacred area like Omoto Shrine, and my impression is that it is a small-scale ritual site that was lost as stories were passed down. I also climbed Mt. Yonegami, and in the central area there are lots of megaliths of this size. The pillars are just erected from whatever was available on site, so I don't think it was that difficult to make. I feel a little embarrassed to make a big fuss about everything and talk about it in the same league as the world-famous stone circles. There are many similar megalithic worship sites in Oita, so I recommend you visit the others as well. (Translated by Google) There are many large holes like the one in the photo above in the hilly area at an altitude of around 40m. This hole is called a horizontal hole grave, and it is believed that the body of the deceased was placed in this hole at the time. There are a total of 49 horizontal tombs. Originally, only 46 were found, but an investigation by the Board of Education conducted from 2006 to 2007 found three more, bringing the total to 49. Because of their large number, the locals call them ``Hyakketsu'' (Hyakketsu). According to P. 337 of "Shinkyo Chiku Fudoki" (written by Koji Yamauchi), it is said to be "a tomb built during the Kofun period, approximately 1400 years ago." 1400 years ago means around 600 AD. According to the explanation on the information board, there is the Kanai-zuka ruins on the north side of the Hyakuru Yokoana tomb group, and it is said that the Kanai-zuka ruins were built from the late 6th century to the early 7th century (550-650), and the Hyakuru tombs are also estimated to have been built during this period. The period between 200 and 600 AD is considered to be the Kofun period, so the Hyakuru Yokoana tombs and the Kankyozuka ruins can be said to date from the end of the Kofun period. In addition to the two ruins mentioned above, there is another one, the Uenoharu Yokoana Tomb Group, in the Yamakuni River basin. It appears that this Yamakuni River basin has been a suitable place for human habitation since the Kofun period. More than 1,600 grave goods were found in the Hyakuru Yokoana Tomb Group. Originally, these holes were blocked by earth and sand, but excavations conducted from 2006 to 2007 apparently restored them to such beautiful condition (Reference: "Shinkyo Chikufudoki (written by Koji Yamauchi)", p. 337) There is a parking lot where several cars can be parked on the northernmost side of the hill where the Hyakuru Yokoana Tomb Group is located. The size of the hole in the side tomb becomes smaller as you go south from the place near this parking lot. The northernmost hole is the largest of all the side tombs, and an adult can fit into it by bending down a little.

If you specify the route directly to ``Ryogo Rice Terraces'' as your destination, you will enter the side road after passing ``Kifune Shrine (Plains)''. This road passes from Gokuraku-ji Temple to Ayo-no-taki and heads towards Ryogo Rice Terraces, but it is a very narrow road that does not allow you to separate from the rice terraces at all along the way. If an oncoming vehicle comes, it will be fatal. If you specify ``Yo Onsen'' as a waypoint, you can head to ``Ryogo Rice Terraces'' via another route that can be separated. By the way, if you want to go to Yo-no-taki, please note that you will need to specify the route on Google Maps so that you can head to the Yo-no-taki parking lot beyond Yo Onsen. [Review] *This is the normal review* [Visit date, on-site access] Well, I stopped by on November 16, 2022. In the above-mentioned access, we directly specified the Ryogo rice terraces, so we had a very difficult time getting there. Please be careful as this is a really deadly road. When you arrive, you will find a public rest area and restroom downstairs. There are roads on both sides of the rest area that lead up to the rice terraces. There is only one parking space in the middle of the road where you can make a U-turn. Be sure to park there and enjoy the rice terraces. If you go too far, you will have a hard time because there is no place to make a U-turn. *There is no guide to the parking space, so if you think you can make a U-turn here, that's the parking space. [Landscape/Ryoaikawa Bridge] This is a very quiet rice terrace in the mountains. Although the location was not the best in terms of the time and date I visited, I think it is a good rice terrace. It is approximately 4ha in size and consists of approximately 120 rice terraces. It was selected as one of Japan's top 100 rice terraces in 1999. A river flows between the two villages, and terraced rice fields spread out on the steep slopes on both sides. Although the population of both villages is declining and aging, they continue to cultivate rice using traditional hanging methods to preserve the landscape. The stone bridge ``Ryoai River Bridge'' spans the river that flows through the rice terraces, and it seems to be one of the famous spots. The Ryoai River Bridge is located a little above the rest area, and you can walk up it from the rest area. Next time I would like to visit during the Instagram-worthy period.

When I went, a rotten tree had broken and was covering the road, and although my car was able to pass, the antenna on its roof was hit and broken. I'm not sure if it's worth going. I think it's much easier and more pleasant to go to Uchinari Rice Terraces. The road running through the rice terraces is also very narrow, and there are only a few places where you can turn, so I recommend checking carefully. Looking at Google Maps, the Ryogo Rice Terraces Rest Area appears to be well maintained, but overall it cannot be said to be in good condition. The beautiful scenery has been preserved for a long time. However, as depopulation has progressed in recent years, it has become difficult to make a living on rice and wheat, and many young people have left the countryside, and abandoned farmland can now be seen here and there, overgrown with grass. When you stand here, you can see the original scenery of Japan, and at the same time you can see the reality. Historical landmark
Shimoichi Magaibutsu, also known as the breast immobility, is a collection of Buddha statues dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Located within walking distance of Ajimu's Family Travel Village, it offers visitors the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll and admire these remarkable ancient carvings.
(Translated by Google) When you turn the Y-shaped curve on the northwest side of Prefectural Route 42, you will find the parking lot for both Shimoichi Hyakuana and Shimoichi Magaibutsu. If you follow the signboard and go down the stairs, you can see the Magaibutsu. Shimoichi Magaibutsu is a Magaibutsu from the early Muromachi period located in Shimoichi, Ajimu-cho, Usa City, Oita Prefecture, and is designated as a historic site of Oita Prefecture. This Magaibutsu is made up of 10 Buddha statues carved into the rock wall that extends from Shimoichi Hyakuana, and enshrines Fudo Myoo and others. The height of the statue is 0.7 to 2 meters, and it is thought to have been created in the first half of the Muromachi period, as it uses a half-carving technique. Locally, it is considered one of the ``Seven Wonders of Ajimu'', and there is a legend that when a mother after giving birth offered porridge to the Fudo Myoo statue and ate the leftovers, milk began to flow, and it is also called ``Nyufudo'' or ``Imafudo''. The car needs to turn a little away from the Shinkai River and go past the Ajimu Soft-shelled Turtle Center along the river. There is also a parking space under Route 42. The Magaibutsu statue is located in front of the torii gate, and there are about 10 statues in total, centering around Fudo Myoo. Although it is close to the road, it is in relatively good condition and the face of the statue can be identified. Although it is a shallow carving method called half-carving, the shape remains firmly. However, even though there are such wonderful cultural assets, trees and plants have been left largely untouched. I don't think it would have been this bad if the city government had done more to protect it. It is unfortunate that there is no concept of preserving cultural properties. I would like Usa City to take a little more care of its cultural assets. Buddhist temple
Takasukannondo, also known as the Buzen Province Thirty-Three Kannon Sacred Sites Third Temple, is a unique and picturesque temple located in Beppu City. The temple is enshrined with Kannon statues and features a suspension bridge that leads to a magnificent cliff-side temple. The area is frequented by local residents and visitors alike, offering a glimpse into the local culture and traditions.

And the view from the hall is spectacular. Here, I'll find peace of mind, reflect on myself, and deepen my sense of compassion. Further along the walking trail, I'll find Yakushiji Temple, the hand-carved tunnel, and the group of tunnel tombs. There's a large hornet's nest at Yakushiji Temple, but it appears to have disappeared, so don't worry.
