You can walk the entire perimeter of Mackinac Island—it’s a scenic 8-mile loop. This car-free route offers stunning views of Lake Huron, the Mackinac Bridge, and the island’s historic sites. The trail is mostly flat and paved, making it accessible for walkers of all levels. Definitely grab bug spray if you’re walking around Mackinac Island—especially during spring and summer! The island’s lush forests and proximity to water mean mosquitoes and biting insects can be pretty active in the warmer months. A good bug spray will keep you comfortable and let you fully enjoy the trails and scenic walks without pesky bites.
Beautiful, interesting rock formation with gray history! Definitely worth the walk up the steps or take a horse & buggy tour - it is one of the stops! Beautiful views of the lake & surrounding foliage! The nature info center is new & holds lots of great info about the rock & island!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 — A Must-See Natural Wonder on Mackinac Island Arch Rock is one of the most iconic and breathtaking sights on Mackinac Island. This massive natural limestone arch rises about 150 feet above Lake Huron, offering absolutely stunning views of the shoreline, water, and surrounding forest. The formation itself is incredible — shaped naturally over thousands of years — and it's hard not to be amazed by its size and how perfectly it's framed by the scenery. It’s especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light filters through the trees and the water glows beneath. You can reach it easily by bike, horse-drawn carriage, or a scenic hike. The viewing platform is well-maintained and provides spectacular photo opportunities. There's also historical signage explaining the geology and Native American legends connected to the site. Whether you’re into nature, photography, or just taking in amazing views, Arch Rock is an absolute must-visit. It’s one of the highlights of Mackinac Island — beautiful, peaceful, and unforgettable.
This view was absolutely stunning!!! A must see! I've wanted to see this for years & it didn't disappoint. Restrooms available nearby. You can climb steps to a higher point but this view is from the carriage ride tour around the island where we got off for pictures & to take in the scenery of the vask landscape. Beautiful!! Cost nothing to view arc rock as you can take a long walk there for free or rent a bicycle, horse taxi or the horse carriage.
The views of the rock formations and water are absolutely breathtaking. Fall is a perfect season to visit this place. I explored the island on a bike I rented right at the ferry port. To reach Arch Rock, I parked my bike and climbed about 200 steps to the top—it was well worth it!
Arch rock is so awesome, definitely make sure you see it if you are on Mackinac! The arch itself is so pretty, and there’s an overlook that is a tiny bit t higher up above the arch that’s perfect for pictures! Do the staircase up if you can, it’s about 10 minutes (if that) up a steep stair case but the views through the trees are so pretty, plus there’s a good amount of chipmunks on the way!
The Arch rock is one of a kind experience. Never gets old. I loved it the same way I saw for the first time 20 years ago. Can be enjoyed by all the ages alike.
The Arch Rock is Awesome to see when on Mackinac Island the tour guide said as the years come and go the Arch Rock will eventually will be no more because of erosion so if you are on the the Island it is for a great site to vist.

Somewhat expensive ticket, but the views from the fort are some of the best on the island! We went in only an hour before close, so there were few other visitors about, but we got to see the last rifle demonstration and cannon salute. Great interactive exhibits and informational videos. Worth a visit!
Fort Mackinac was a neat experience throwing you back to a period of time in history getting to see the houses & living quarters of members of the Military. We even got to see artillery fired. People are dressed up for the time period. Beautiful views. Dog friendly. Restrooms available. Concessions available. Views and fresh cool Lake breeze was enjoyable. We purchased a carriage ride package that included the butterfly house, Fort & Art Museum. Id recommend that but there was no wait & we got off a 2 horse carriage & got back on a 3 horse carriage that took us to tour the grand hotel/secret garden. Recommend! They spend a million dollars on flowers for the Secret Garden every yr!
Beyond the beautiful views and history, the Tea Room offers delicious food and drink options. After we ordered the Chicken Salad w/cherries sandwich and chips, they were happy to split it for the two of us on separate plates. Friendly staff and as mentioned the view from their veranda seating overlooking the harbor made our afternoon visit.
Highly recommend! I didnt plan on doing this and impulsively bought tickets on the island. Glad we did. Very cool history and plenty to look at. Unfortunately the barracks were closed for renovation but everything else was open. We watched the cannon demonstration and they gave some interesting history before firing it. The views from the fort are unbelievable too
Fun and educational place. We went here as part of the wagon tour. Spent about 40 minutes and didn't see everything, so could have spent more time exploring. The rifle demonstration was pretty cool!
Incredible experience! The tickets were $17 which granted you access to the main fort along with other historic buildings in the town. The fort had multiple demonstrations and events throughout the day and all the staff were very knowledgeable about the fort's history.
Great fort. Live gun firing and cannon firing. Probably one of the best forts we have been too. Displays were very well done. Nice movie too. Cute lil Cafe and era impersonators too. Very friendly and ready to answer questions. Gift shop was onsite too. Be sure you can walk stairs. Like 30 stairs up. Not wheelchair friendly
Nicely restored fort from early in American history. Reenactors were very knowledgeable and comfortable answering questions. Watched several demonstrations and all were well done. Be advised path from park up the side of the hill is VERY steep.

Had an amazing experience. My wife and I went because we were already up there however we did not expect to enjoy it as much as we did. But, be sure to bring water it is a hike.
You have to take a cruise to see them, but it was well worth the $50. Kayakers were plentiful for those who are more adventurous.
Such a beautiful place to visit. Love hiking down to the beach and driving down to see the waterfall
Absolutely beautiful place from the secluded beach to the picturesque horizon. It’s an easy 3 mile hike back there. Took me an hour with my brisk walk. Since it’s so far back it’s barely occupied. Brand new outhouses too!
A must-see when visiting the upper peninsula. Make sure you make time to hike and kayak this area. We made a point of traveling back to Saginaw via the upper peninsula so that our grandson could enjoy this view.
Excellent view from boat tour. Friendly Captain and staff. Snacks and drinks available.
One of the best place to visit in Michigan. If you planning to visit picture Rock you need to take a 2 hour boat tour and make sure you buy your tickets in advance.
The boat to pictured rock was the highlight of our trip up north! The captain, Jaydan, was entertaining and informative. Bruce was top-notch in local lore! Jaydan also knew how to get the boat into one of the openings in the Rock wall. I'm so glad we went on this trip!

It's a pretty island with a nice bicycle path all the way around - allow at least an hour and enjoy the scenery. There are some nice hiking trails too. It's pretty touristy even during the week and prices reflect that. There are plenty of bike hire places, there are also horse and carriage tours.
Lovely place to spend a day or two. My Recomendation is if you can take your own bikes 🚲 in order to look around the island. It’s beautiful!!! They rent bikes in the island but it gets pricey. $18 an hour summer 2025. Wear sunscreen and bug repellent. It’s going to be a great experience to create lovely memories.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 — Magical Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride Around Mackinac Island & Stunning State Park We had an amazing experience exploring Mackinac Island on a horse-drawn carriage ride that took us all around the island. This classic, leisurely ride was the perfect way to see the island’s charming streets, historic sites, and breathtaking natural beauty without the noise of cars—since the island is car-free. Our knowledgeable driver shared interesting stories about the island’s history, landmarks, and unique features as we passed iconic spots like Arch Rock, Fort Holmes, and the stunning shoreline of Mackinac Island State Park. The park covers over 80% of the island and is filled with peaceful trails, towering trees, and panoramic views of Lake Huron. The gentle clip-clop of the horses’ hooves combined with the fresh lake air and scenic vistas created an unforgettable experience. It’s truly a relaxing and immersive way to appreciate the island’s charm, natural beauty, and rich history. If you’re visiting Mackinac Island, I highly recommend the horse-drawn carriage tour for a clear, informative, and magical way to see everything the island has to offer.
I had the best time exploring the island. It was a bit warm the day we went and my parents had to get me a cart to ride in after walking 5 miles I was so tired. I loved seeing all the horses and other dogs. I would love to go back when it a bit cooler outside.
An amazing and beautiful park that winds through the island. Spacious views of the beautiful shoreline and captivating natural wonders like arch rock will treat you along the 8+ mile loop around the island.
Road Trip Great Lakes Loop (From Philly) Stop: Mackinac Island, Michigan One of the most unique and memorable stops on our Great Lakes road trip was Mackinac Island. To get there, you take a ferry—no cars are allowed on the island, which immediately gives it a distinctive, charming feel. It’s like stepping back in time… at least until you see the Starbucks. Unfortunately, that was the first thing I noticed when I arrived, and it felt a little out of place. It’s the only national chain I noticed, but even one feels like too many in a place that thrives on its small-town character and local businesses. It just detracted a bit from the authenticity of the island. That aside, the island offers a lot: you can explore on foot, rent a bike, or enjoy a carriage ride pulled by horses. The pace is slower, and that’s part of the appeal. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, and historic sites to visit, and it’s easy to spend a whole day—or several—just wandering. A highlight for many is the Grand Hotel, made famous by the film Somewhere in Time. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth checking out for the architecture and views alone. In short, Mackinac Island is a beautiful and fascinating place—rich in history and scenery. I just hope future development stays in harmony with what makes it so special in the first place. Almost forgot to mention, they are dog friendly.
Quaint island, overall not too much going on- did the bike riding which was very fun, beaches are rocky and literally wasn't able to walk on them without shoes. Fudge was honestly --- fudge, nothing special. Def would not spend more than a day here, can't imagine being here at night- even less to do i can imagine! Also boat ride over was cool but can't imagine people pay more to go under a bridge? And a longer route. Arch was beautiful, nice little walk upstairs, water around island is nice and clear, 8.2 mi bike ride around all island. Overall checked off the box of places to go but can't see going back this far just for the island.
Awesome! Could end the review with just that. Last year we biked around the island and this year chose to walk/hike more of the interior, including the state park. From the fort, to Arch Rock, to Tranquil Bluff Trail, to point overlook, we saw very few people once we left Arch Rock. We had a picnic in the shade on the grounds below the fort, walked through the Grand Hotel secret gardens, walked along the lakeshore boardwalk and rock beach and finished with our purchase of 3 pounds of chocolate. 8 miles with some moderate terrain on the trail but all so worth it. Arrived at 8:30 am to the ferry and back on by 3:30 pm to avoid the large July 4 crowds. And we did all of this with 2 dogs.

My friend and I hiked both the upper and lower falls. We went to the different parking lots and didn’t walk from one to the other. (Although we found out there is a shuttle so you can hike the 4 miles and get a ride back.) The boardwalks are nice and allow for a safe stroll. The steps to the bottom are also safe and sturdy. The falls are impressive and it was a nice excursion. And it wasn’t crowded which was nice.
This was our first trip in the UP and we heard and read so many great things about this park and it lived up to the hype. This is a beautifully maintained park. The pathways are free of debris and easy to walk. This is coming from two people who didn't think they'd be able to walk the whole Lower Falls, let alone the Upper Falls too. The Lower Falls is about a 2-mile walk in total. The Upper Falls felt a little less than that. We had a gorgeous day to walk these paths. I would recommend getting to either one of these fairly early as parking fills up. The lower falls seems to have more parking than the upper but once you get there, you'll be glad you went, especially if you love nature.
A beautifully relaxing space in nature. The state has done a phenomenal job of blending human access and convenience with nature. Easy access wooden walkways to the falls. Great spots to overlook the falls, rent and launch kayaks, or access swim spots on the river. The visitor center has lots of great shopping and snacks that help support the park. We are so glad we decided to veer off our original mapped road trip to add this park as a stop. Well worth the extra mileage and time. Plan on spending at least an hour if not more.
Beautiful park. The areas near the falls are easy to get to. The top falls has 181 steps down and back up if you want to view it from the Gorge, so be aware. We hiked the 4.5 miles from the bottom to the top falls. There are a lot of ups and downs, roots, soggy areas. If you are out of shape, I would avoid it and drive from the bottom falls to the top after visiting each. If you can hike it, it is beautiful. Round trip was 11 miles of walking. Be sure to plan for the 2.5 hours each way. I wouldn't want to do it in the dark. There is a private shuttle that can take you from one parking lot to the other, $ 20.00 for first person and $5.00 for others in your group. They have limited availability do read the signs and contact them. Gift shops are at the top and bottom falls.
We had a wonderful time hiking the trails and viewing all the different waterfalls. Many people think there are just two but the lower is actually made up of four and lots of cascades. Between the two different areas you should plan to spend 4 to 5 hours there. We would highly recommend spending part of a day here.
Awesome scenery! Short and easy walk to the waterfalls. Handicap friendly. They have food, beer, ice cream, restrooms, and a few shops. Something for everyone. I'm glad we made the 2.5 drive from Escanaba. It was a little busy when we went with the fall colors. You won't be disappointed.
This is an amazing space. Lots of waterfalls. Rocks can be super slick though. Almost fell myself and watched a number of others fall down. Looked painful. Be careful. Plenty of hiking available. You can wade ino the falls at various points. It feels great to feel the water rushing past your feet.
Beautiful spot, a must see, people from all over the country and the world were there today. Have to see the upper and lower (pst...the upper is best for all things.) I can't wait to go back after the construction on the upper bridge and restaurant area. Beautiful views.

Our first experience going through locks. The crew was so informative. I had no idea there were so many locks in the US even after seeing the Panama Canal earlier this year. This is smaller scale but equally vital to commerce and industry. Our Captain took us up the Canada side and back (down) on the US side. We'll visit again and do this tour again.
This was a great experience. The park does not allow any weapons! Leave your pocket knives in the car. Public restroom. The locks are very interesting. My family and 2 other families traveling had a great time. The ice-cream right across the street is amazing and very affordable. Walking strawberries are great but expensive.
This may be one of the coolest things Ice seen. Its just amazing watching the big ships move through the lock. There's a a nice viewing platform. A lovely park. And the visitor center is very interesting. Definitely want to come back, 2 hours just isn't enough to enjoy the area and I want to take the boat tour.
Fascinating experience. You float through a lock upstream, rising 22', tour the St Mary's River a bit, and then head back through a Canadian lock. No passport required. We rode on the Original Soo Locks Boat Tours. Well worth the price!
The Soo Locks are a set of parallel locks, operated and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and they enable ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The locks are located on the St. Marys River between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, between the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan and the Canadian province of Ontario. They bypass the rapids of the river, where the water falls 21 ft (6.4 m). The locks pass an average of 10,000 ships per year. The Soo Locks has a nice visitor center, which provides historical information, as well as current workload and performance statistics. It's well worth spending 25 minutes visiting all the exhibits. A three-level observation deck allows visitors a close-up of the locks in operation.
Was a amazing experience, we got there on a busy day and loved seeing so many ships come thru and 3 - 1000 footers in one day. Waiting to see when the 3rd lock gets done. Definitely will be going back once it's done.
Beautiful marvel of engineering. Great seeing the boats go through, up close, really makes you appreciate their size and cargo tonnage. Definitely worth a stop to check out!
Definitely worth the trip. Watched three boats go through on a rainy afternoon. The viewing platform (under roof) is awesome and the historical visitor’s center has great info and visuals to view. Staff was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and engaging.

These guys, and I mean everyone from parking lot attendant to ticket takers to boat crew, make it happen. On time and very dependable and friendly. That was the start(and end) of a great day to Mackinac island.
Fine as far as ferries go. Next time I'll buy the ticket for the faster crossing. The slower boat is hella noisy and has trouble with high seas. Not to mention it's open air and can get very cold.
The Arnold Transit ferry ride to and from Mackinac Island was smooth. From ticket purchase to boarding to the friendly staff that provided understandable instructions and assistance with photos. We enjoyed the view of the lake from the top deck, the ferry's capacity was full yet we didn't feel cramped. Suggested over the other options in town.
The boat is very clean and the ride is very relaxing. I just didn't think they should charge such an outrageous rate for the boat ride. Is one would go down at least a little in price the others would follow. We've always enjoyed the island, but not sure we would do the boat ride and island again.
Arnold Transit Company offers such a smooth and scenic ride to Mackinac Island! The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, making the entire boarding process easy and stress-free. I really appreciated their attention to detail with luggage and bikes. the boat itself was clean and comfortable. What makes Arnold stand out is its relaxed, classic vibe—it feels like part of the Mackinac Island experience itself, not just a way to get there. Prices are reasonable, and the crossing is peaceful and enjoyable. Highly recommend Arnold Transit if you’re looking for excellent service and a memorable trip! The wait for the ferry was about 30 min. The ride itself is also 30 min. Overall it was great. Do check them out.
The ferry ride was really good! It was not only comfortable but also very affordable. They charged just $22 for a round trip, while most other ferries cost over $30. Even though it was cheaper, the experience was smooth, enjoyable, and definitely worth it. Great value for money!
Couldn't have bern more pleased. They picked me up from.my motel and returned me after. Boat was clean. Price was reasonable [$33? R/T] Not much of a line- I got on both times I wanted.
Definitely recommend. All the staff members are super nice. Very safe. Vary gentle. Used this boat about 5 times this summer. Highly recommend

I have been to the museum twice. I enjoyed it both times. The staff is always incredibly friendly which is a bonus. It's a gorgeous location as well. There is lots to read and learn and multiple artifacts. My personal favorite is seeing the inside of the lighthouse dwellings with their old time dishes and furniture, etcetera. There is also a nice deck overlooking lake Superior. They have a film you can watch on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Unfortunately I always tear up when I watch it but it is very interesting.
All in all a great place to visit, but it's probably not going to take you 3hrs to tour the grounds. Nice 20 minute video on the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which i recommend you watch. Some really good points of interest, some things not so much. The drive is somewhat long and there is only one way in and one way out. The buildings are close so walking should not be an issue. You may encounter a large amount of mosquitos,so prepare for that. Great view of the sandy beach ship graveyard. There are a lot of interesting artifacts and stories in the buildings, so be ready to read a lot. Was not too crowded so much of reading should be in view. It's a pleasant visit but I'll let you be the judge 🤔
We lucked out on an early October weekend with temps in the 80's at Whitefish Point's Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. One fee gets you into the museum, along with several other buildings on site. There is a wonderful gift shop which helps sustain the museum, so your $$ are well spent. Buildings are in wonderful condition, given that they sit right on Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay. They now offering a wonderful viewing deck of Lake Superior, which is totally accessible to all. You can still kick off your shoes, wander on the beach, and even dip your toes into Lake Superior. Parking is ample.
Great place, many buildings to explore, inside and out, but we only had 40 minutes. They charge $15 per person. All the staff in buildings 1, 3 were enthusiastic and helpful, but they were in a hurry to close up in buildings 2 & 4. Didn't get to go in anymore buildings. I recommend 3 hours. Then afterwards, you can explore the beach and wildlife nature preserve...make it a whole day visit.
This is a must visit if you're interested in the Great Lakes as well as the Legendary Edmund Fitzgerald. The displays were amazing and informative. Loved learning more about a few of the many shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. Plus everything else with the lighthouse and beach makes this worth the drive and price of admission.
Very informative and interesting attraction. You have a museum, living quarters of lighthouse keeper, 15 minute movie about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and a gift shop. There are two observation decks, one on the beach of lake Superior and one for bird watchers. Plenty of parking (free) and clean restrooms. Staff very friendly and there to answer your questions. FYI, if driving ensure you have full tank of gas as gas stations are far & few and gas cost about 30 to 50 cent more in the area. Minimal construction so expect delays during high traffic times. Definitely worth the visit. If you buy tickets inadvance there is virtually no WIFI to pull them up on your phone but they can use your name to pull up tickets you purchased on line. Tickets can be purchased on site as well
This has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The day was over class, and there was light precipitation in the air, which seemed absolutely apropos for the solemnity of the history. The museum was laid out extremely well, artifacts were incredibleto view in the additional buildings on the grounds where incredibly interesting.
This was a wonderful experience. We were on our 15th anniversary vacation. You can go into different museums and walk down to the beach of Lake Superior. You get to learn about the Fitzgerald sinking, get to see how they lived, and learn about the Coast Guard from the day. Very interesting and fun place to visit. Don't forget to visit the gift shop!

We visited on a very rainy, cold day but despite the weather, it was still a stunning place. Everything is well kept with restrooms and picnic areas throughout. The many trails throughout the park lead to great views. We stayed about an hour and a half, but you could easily spend a half day here if you did more trails and overlooks.
AMAZING VIEWS!!! We live by Lake Michigan and although it can be choppy and the waves are pretty rough, it does not compare to the power of Lake Superior! But the VIEWS are what is so awesome! Wonderful walking path to view all this beauty! If you go out to see the Black Rocks, BE SURE to wear appropriate shoes!!! Very rough terrain to reach them, but worth it if you are physically able. I would definitely come back here when in the area:)
Absolutely spectacular! We always have our furbabies with us so we don’t stay for long but each time we come we discover something new and magical. Visitors beware there are certain hours the road is closed to vehicles to allow for bike and foot traffic, also that dogs are not allowed outside of the vehicle. An absolute joy to visit!
Beautiful! For those not from the area, its located in Marquette which is a very cute town. Its the perfect mix of trails and downtown. The trails are very easy, not intense so good for beginner hikers. Beautiful views of the lake and the black rocks are very cool!
Beautiful views of the lake and black rocks. A good mix of more fun and challenging hiking paths, as well as easier and serene ones through the woods. You can also drive through a one way that loops around the peninsula if you wish or walk along the road for a more direct path to the black rocks on foot. If you take some of the harder trails, be careful particularly on the side of some of the hills. Some are quite steep on the side of the path.
Stopped in over the Labor Day Weekend, my wife wanted to check out the Black Rocks. I knew nothing about them until we walked out and saw a large number of people jumping off into the water. We were not suited to indulge at this time, but it looked to be fun. Also, walked the breakwall near the ore dock. This looks like a great place to spend summer time when in the area again.
A must see when visiting Marquette. This beautiful park situated on Lake Superior has beautiful vistas, natural forested area and waters edge areas. I highly recommend Presque Isle Park.
Large and beautiful park with multiple restrooms available throughout. Bbq grills and picnic tables at different spots. Very nice scenic walks and beach access. Sand beaches and pebble beaches. There is a spot called Black Rocks that is amazing. You can make it down to the water. Water is clear and unpolluted. Truly gorgeous.

Holy cow! What a stunning site. There are several overlooks and a nice trail that goes down to the beach area but be prepared. This place was BUSY when we were there and the trail terrain is moderately difficult depending on your experience and hiking level. Mostly steep hill climb back up from the beach.
Great view even without going on the boat or kayak tours. With the trail you can get pretty close to the edging. Obviously no one is allowed to climb or go on it . They were just finishing up on putting the rest of the fencing area going down to the point.
Such an incredible view! I highly recommend coming here and seeing the ‘painted rocks.’ A short walk for very beautiful scenery! The day we went was cloudy but it was still an amazing time.
Stunning views of Pictured Rocks formation and Lake Superior! It’s hard to believe the views are not somewhere more “tropical”. Easy access with paved walkway and wood-slatted lookout areas-handicap inclusive. A MUST SEE!!
What a fabulous view! Could not believe how clear the water was!
Such a beautiful view. It’s a must visit in the U.P
Worth the detour. Lower overlook gives the closer look of the miners castle rock.
This is a stunning overlook of Miners Castle Point! Beautiful water views, so breathtaking, you’ll never want to leave! An easy walk to both the upper and lower decks! This is a must stop on your way to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore…be sure not to skip over this one!

Not only is it a pretty waterfall in a very picturesque setting that is worth a visit in any season. But it also happens to be one of the easiest ones to access during the winter months. Finally made it to the Pictured Rock National Lakeshore during a winter of significant snowfall and was really taken aback by the snow depth. This winter it is a snow lovers paradise and haven to Lake Superior ice fishers for sure. As well as cross country skiers, or snow shoe enthusiasts and not to mention the ice climbers. If you love winter this would be the place for you.
Really can't rate this. We took the time to go, only to discover the trail to the falls was damaged and we could not go. I did like that it said no pets allowed on the other trail. It gets old dodging dog poop that people are too irresponsible to clean up.
There's a very short walk to the falls and there are multiple viewing platforms. There is a large parking lot here and there is a building with restrooms. The visitor's center is just a trailer with a window for now as it is a temp building while they are preparing a permanent one. The rangers are friendly and you can stamp your national parks passport book here. If you don't have a pass for Pictured Rocks, this should be your first stop in the park.
Located in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park, this waterfall is easily accessible via the trail from the visitor center. The 800 ft trail will take you to a juncture where you can view the waterfall on the lower by a boardwalk or take the stairs to view the upper part of the falls. There is a large parking lot by the visitor center. Keep in mind this is part of the National Park System and you will need to purchase a park pass.
Short walk to a very nice waterfall! There is stairs leading to an upper deck and then a lower deck aswell. There was a small crowd of people there even though it was raining. I definitely recommend giving this place a stop!
This is a short hike that is wheelchair accessible to the lower viewpoint. This was such a nice walk. It is about 800 feet from the visitor center. You can take a trail off the right that goes to an upper viewpoint. It does get crowded on the main part of the trail.
Awesome waterfall! And it's right at the visitor center. There's not many waterfalls that are this short of a walk and flat and paved the whole way. Especially being that it's less than 1/4 mile and was still flowing at the end of the summer.
It’s a short hike to see the falls. The upper trail has steps but it’s got a great view. This is a federal park so it requires a national park pass. Our veterans were free.

During our road trip around the Great Lakes, we stopped at Oswald Bear Ranch and I’m glad we did. It’s a cute little place with a very friendly staff that makes you feel welcome right away. We got to learn a little about bears, which was both fun and educational, and of course couldn’t resist doing the photo op where you actually get to pet a bear. 🐻 It’s a unique experience you don’t come across every day, and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Highly recommend for families, animal lovers, or anyone looking for a memorable stop along their trip.
This is absolutely a must do in the UP. Not only is the baby bear adorable if you do choose to take photos with one, but feeding apples to the adult bears was a joy! A few things to keep in mind. We visited in September of 2025. The admission price ($40 for the car), the baby bear photo ($10) and the apples ($4 per bag, you want several bags!) all only accept cash. But the gift ship does take cards and it was a great gift shop. Lots of choices for clothing and other items and reasonably priced.
My husband and I visited the ranch 3 days ago for the first time. It was a one of a kind experience! One of my favorite things we did and we will definitely be back! Feeding the bears was so cool and feeding/petting the cub was a dream. The staff was super friendly, all of the bears are adorable. Thank you!
Oswald's Bear Ranch was incredible. When you get there you can buy some apples to feed the bears. The bears definitely know when you have the apples and would sit up looking extra cute so you would throw them more apples. At set times throughout the day, they have it set so you can go in a certain pen and feed one of the cubs and get your pictures taken with the bear. The cub we fed was 8 months old and was already incredibly strong! I highly recommend visiting the bear ranch! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there.
The bears were so much fun to watch and feed! The kids had a blast tossing apples to them. While getting pictures with the cub, the handlers were great and took loads of pictures for us! Overall, great stop if you are an animal lover🙂
It has always been my dream to see a wild bear. My husband surprised me with this place. We were on our honeymoon. The owners have an awesome set up at the sanctuary you can definitely tell ALL bears are happy and taken care off stuff was super friendly. You even get to feed a baby bear. The staff walk you thru it and stay with you and make sure your 100% safe. I hate we live 7 hours away. But if your EVER up in the Upper Peninsula definitely stop here !!!
$30 per car $4 per bag of apples to feed bears $10 to take a group photo, on someone's phone from your group, with one of the cubs Fun experience with more bears than you realize. Easily walkable but might be tough for elderly or some handicapped. Has a gift shop.
Always so great to see the bears up close and in a very natural setting. Take time to walk the long way around their enclosures - about a half mile but well worth it to see how much space they have and get a glimpse of some of their dens. Feed them apples, watch them take a swim in their pond, and see the yound males wrestle around and play. Their new souvenir shop is AMAZING, too!

My wife talked me into going through this butterfly enclosure - and I'm glad she did. It was really quite well done. It was interesting seeing all of the many different kinds of butterflies. You are in the enclosure with them, watching them fly from one flower to the next. We were there for a butterfly release. That was interesting to see how they do the release. I wouldn't delay or rush your schedule to see the release. Just sitting in the enclosure is the good part! After the butterfly enclosure there is a following room with various walking sticks and other insects & reptiles. Apologies for the video... Little buggers move quick!
This place is so majestic and I make sure to comeback every time I am on the island! I am not a butterfly person and typically would not do something like this but for some reason this place is magical! The garden itself is so pretty and peaceful, and the butterflies are just the cherry on top. Make sure you wear bright colors or vibrant patterns, but even if you don’t the butterflies will still land on you! You can easily spend an hour in there (even tho it’s a relatively small garden) cuz it’s just so pretty:)
Shout out to Sierra for sharing some cool facts about Ziggy! Also meeting a kid where they were at/ taking their lead. Really appreciated♡
Price is a little steep, but the butterfly house is gorgeous and makes for some great photos. They give you a butterfly identification guide and the staff are present, knowledge, and happy to answer questions! Nice way to pass an hour!
The Butterfly House delivers a unique experience: to view numerous, breathtaking butterflies fluttering around a flower filled greenhouse. The attached insect museum is also interesting to browse, especially the leaf bugs.
We live in metro Detroit & hold a Detroit zoo membership which has a butterfly house: Because of this, regretfully, the past couple times to Mackinac Island we’ve neglected to visit this butterfly exhibit. Some crummy weather brought us inside; I’m happy to say The Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House is far superior to our Zoo’s. We learned the difference between male & female monarch’s and how the generations work during migration. The kids spent more time than I thought identifying species with the ID card, and using my phone to take photos of their favorites; there are just way more butterflies to see here! The insects are pretty, cool too! Very clean terrariums. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Worth the visit!
We LOVE coming here! It’s on our list every year and it’s so much fun! It’s small and intimate so interaction with the butterflies happens often if you just sit and relax. Watch your step, they like to land on the ground a lot! The staff are friendly and informative too. The insects are cool, we especially love the turtles and bees. Very fun spot, don’t miss!
So happy we stopped here! Was unplanned. Was definitely worth the $15. They had so many varieties of butterflies and they give you a handout of all the different kinds to see if you can spot them all. They also have cool bugs to look at. Very happy place!

Very nice boat to go across. We bought the tickets in advance and went straight to the dock to board. They have free parking. Some of the boats go under the bridge which was fantastic. And as you get near, you get to see the Grand Hotel in all its majesty. Wonderful ride to Mackinac and back.
Simply the best place ever to simply be able to un plug fron the everyday mess and hit the rewind button and go back just far enuff too be able to breath again and this is the best place to relax where you can hit simply hit the reset button and get you back to where you actually want to be again
These people are awesome! I don't know how they do it, but they keep everything straight, on time, and very organized. We had luggage and our bikes. They made sure our luggage got to our resort right on time, and everything is ticketed. I bought our tickets online and printed them out, so it made it very easy. If you do this, you still have to take your tickets inside and get a tag for your bike. The ride over to the island was so beautiful. When we returned, it was the same process. I told the resort we would be on the 10:30 ferry and our luggage was there at 10:30. No issues what so ever.
I am a lifelong Arnold line customer and had to figure out new logistics to Mackinac Island for the first time. I must say, we were pleasantly surprised with our service and trips to/from the Island. We took the ferry from St. Ignace (first time - always Mackinaw City) and went under the bridge on the way. It was perfect and unique. The way home was quick and easy. I miss the slow boats and teared up when I saw a few drydocked but will give the Star Line credit for a nice experience.
Easy shuttle ride to the boat. Getting tickets online was quick, I actually bought them while standing in line for the shuttle lol friendly all around
Our day started out rainy- So we had to sit inside, the staff was friendly - but no ride under the bridge due to weather but it was our ride back that was the BEST! Due to the rain the Lake was still rough and the ride scheduled to go under the bridge was iffy AGAIN. But Captain LARRY was game and he took us under the bridge. We had so much fun and enjoyed the trip - Rain and ALL!! Thanks Captain LARRY! This group will remember just how much fun you were!! Plenty of parking - come 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. If your order your tickets on-line there is a discount.
The staff were amazing, they are very professional about the COVID restrictions. When we got on the ferry at first it was nice to go on top to view the city as youre leaving, but once they got the ferry up to full speed it was a bit cold so we went to the bottom deck and had a great experience. I really like how they take you around the Mackinac Bridge on the way to the island. Awesome experience! Hope to do it again one day.
Customer service was good. Ferry came on time. We selected a time that takes you below the Mackinac bridge from St Ignace. Totally worth it. We parked on one of the overnight parking lots since we were staying on the island. Ferry from St Ignace definitely is much less crowded. On a chilly day I would advise avoiding the first rows on top, we were freezing. If you book a hotel that includes porter service they will take the luggage for you from St Ignace and a porter will take the luggage on the island from the dock to the hotel. If not they will ask you to carry it yourself till a drop off location. The 4 versus 5 star was because maybe when i shared we had luggage when buying the tickets they could have given instructions on where to drop the luggage all she said was they will take it. No they wont unless you have a hotel booked that includes porter service, you will need to take it to a drop off location. Minor thing but itd have been a 5 if not for that.
