Park
National reserve
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a stunning park that boasts 40 miles of lakeshore and 100 miles of trails weaving through a northern hardwood forest. The area features the impressive Spray Falls, where Spray Creek cascades over rugged cliffs into Lake Superior. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as camping, kayaking, and hiking while taking in the breathtaking sights of dunes, waterfalls, sparkling inland lakes and streams, towering sandstone cliffs, and unique rock formations.
As someone who’s lived in Los Angeles for 11 years, I can vouch that, at least in the summer, you won’t be able to tell the difference between Lake Superior and the Pacific Ocean. Whole area has pristine turquoise blue water and something for everyone. Long trails for serious hikers, easy viewing platforms for families or those doing a sightseeing road trip, and incredible beaches too. I drove up Miners Castle Road to miners falls and and also hiked around miners beach and mosquito beach, honestly you can skip the falls unless you have small children, there are many other better and less crowded falls in the area and in the UP in general. Don’t skip miners beach! Incredible place, please go!

Simply gorgeous. The ice cave. My last view of scenery before I go. The park is beautiful though my tears I had a hard time to see. But go and enjoy. Enjoy for me as well for I am going soon. GOD wants it this way. Good bye to you who look at this site.

I absolutely fell in love with this place. I wish I can come here all the time. I mean, such a beautiful place. I took my daughters 3 & 5 and they did a fantastic job hiking the UP with us. We drove 6 house away to hike here and it was all worth it. Sadly it was a chili day so we didn’t get to go swimming that would have been awesome the water was so clear I just wanted to hop in. The hike wasn’t too bad. I definitely would love to come here again during the summer not in the end of August.
Mariah C — Google review
The Chapel Rock / Mosquito lake loop is possibly the best hike in Michigan for beautiful, panoramic views. Only two other hikes ( that I'm aware of) can come close to this for sheer beauty: The Escarpment trail at Lake of the Clouds and the Empire Bluffs trail at Sleeping Bear. I would suggest bringing Bear spray on this hike, along with a first aid kit. ( I saw a bear!) The trail conditions are treacherous at times, especially the hikes in and out to the coast. But, once you get to the cliffs, it is almost a dreamlike walk. Be mindful of your whereabouts, as you can literally walk off any given cliff. Trail condition are better along the cliffs. The parking lot was overflowing with vehicles in late August, and I had to park about a quarter of a mile down the road and begin the 11 mile loop. Oddly enough, the trails were virtually empty, until you get to the campgrounds and cliffs. My return hike past beautiful Mosquito Lake ( I think we could do with a more majestic name!) was about a 2 hour solo trek and I did not encounter a single person until I approached the parking lot. You can definitely feel isolated out there, and don't plan on having internet service anywhere in the area. Happy trails!
MikeHgl — Google review
We hiked the 10 mile loop- it was beautiful. Make sure to pack a lunch and lots of water. The trail is well taken care of and the directions are pretty clear. This is my second time back- and I think everyone who lives in Michigan should hike it at least once.
Ashley — Google review
Chapel Falls, Rock (a tree on a rock!), and Beach...all beautiful but the trail is difficult for anyone with mobility issues (81 yo mother with foot drop/brace). She managed to do the full 6.3 mi loop but was much more than we planned. Got to falls and thought we made it this far..lets see the view, rock, etc. Limited signage along trail cause confusion in spots and zero trail markers, only maybe 3 signs on entire trail. Note that trail to left for Chapel beach is far easier than to the right. Took us 6 hrs to complete (incl some beach time)..maybe half for anyone at a better speed. Definitely gorgeous and the beach offers a great spot to take a dip
M B — Google review
Was a lovely adventure ! My boyfriend and I did the 10 (turned into 12) mile Chapel Loop hike & it was gorgeous & so worth it. One of my favorite places to visit. So glad I checked this off my bucket list. Definitely wear good shoes!! I would recommend starting by heading towards Mosquito falls as thats where the most elevation gain was (better to get it out of the way at the start of a 10+ mile hike than at the end when you're more tired!

Gorgeous views are a reality, not a filter. We did the free guided geology tour at Miners Castle Rock. There is a ranger station there, and the kids also earned their ranger badges, and we got our national park passport stamp at Munising Falls Visitor Center. We paid a $25 daily car fee there.

Bodies of Water
Tahquamenon Falls, located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is a must-see natural wonder. It consists of two powerful waterfalls - the Upper and Lower falls - known for their unusual brown tinge due to cedar tannins in the water. The falls are situated in Tahquamenon Falls State Park, the second largest park in Michigan.
Beautiful day here ! Beware of the shuttle - it’s literally a minivan and fits six people today. So just an fyi if your trying to shuttle one way and there are already people waiting for it. No one mentioned this to us . Otherwise had a perfect day ! Lunch at brewery was delicious !
Erica P — Google review
There are alot of stairs!!! Elderly and handicapped, please be fore warned. You either need a parks permit or purchase a day pass. I believe it was $11 per vehicle and was good for as many parks as you chose to visit, that day! Great views. But 1 section was closed for maintenance when we went. But was still very enjoyable and a workout all in one. And I even appreciated and applauded the effort put in to build the whole walk way setup. That would not be an east task! I believe it's also referred to as root beer falls because of the color of the water due to the minerals being leeched into the water from the trees.
Here G — Google review
Love it.. it's quite beautiful. Big change stair to the platform to the falls is closer so, you can't get that close. But, can't wait for the construction to be done for the new 1
Shantae B — Google review
The Park Service is currently building a wheelchair accessible platform at the base of the falls. I can't wait for it to be finished!
John H — Google review
Beautiful tannin stained waterfall in Eastern UP. Easily accessible. Upper Falls and Lower Falls each have their own entrance off of 123, or you can hike the 5 miles one way and make a day of it. Each park has food, a gift shop and bathrooms; state park pass required and can be purchased at the gate. The lower falls allow you to get up close to explore, which is good and bad bc many social trails have developed on the island due to increased traffic. Definitely bring the bug spray or wear long sleeves/pants for the mosquitoes. Highly recommend a stop to explore these falls!
Angela W — Google review
So beautiful! The trials were easy to walk and the area was very clean. The gift shop was super cute as well

My favorite place in the UP!!! All of these falls are so breathtaking and beautiful!! I love that they built the new bridge to cross at the lower falls!

It was an amazing experience. I was waiting just a little waterfall but when I saw it, I loved it. Just visit it you won’t be disappointed.

Bodies of Water
Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as The Big Spring, is a stunning natural wonder located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This impressive freshwater spring features clear turquoise water and offers visitors a unique experience with a pulley-raft ride across its 200-foot length. Surrounded by lush greenery and rich historical significance, Kitch-iti-kipi is not only a geological marvel but also a canvas of cultural stories from the region.
We had wanted to go here for awhile. This is such an amazing place to visit. It is a State Park so you'll have to pay for admission but it's well worth it. The line was long but it goes fast and you're mainly in the shade. The raft is totally cool and gives you the view of a lifetime. Was surprised at the gift shop and the selection they had.
Will M — Google review
What to see: The 45 degrees Fahrenheit 40 feet deep water is so clear that you can see the bottom, along with fish like trout and perch. Sand tumbles up from the bottom, creating a mesmerizing effect. For the best views, you ride a self-operated (human powered) observation raft across the spring. No swimming nor fishing allowed to protect the spring. Well worth going 60 miles out of your way to go see. So beautiful, so relaxing!
Howard S — Google review
Super beautiful lake but it is very packed with tourists. If you're looking for more remote views, this isn't the spot for you. Its a quick stop and go kind of thing. I don't think I was there longer than 15 minutes. Cute gift shop.
Brenna D — Google review
On our road trip around the Great Lakes from Philly, we made a stop at this incredible spot — and don’t ask me to pronounce the name! Located inside Palms Book State Park, this natural spring was one of the most unique and beautiful places we visited. The water is crystal clear all the way to the bottom, and you can easily see fish swimming below. You hop onto a self-operated raft that you pull across the water to the middle of the spring, where there’s an opening in the center to look straight down. It gives you a perfect view of the vibrant underwater world — it’s honestly mesmerizing. It’s a quick stop, but totally worth it. And the best part? It’s dog-friendly! Definitely add this to your list if you’re exploring the Upper Peninsula.
Damian R — Google review
An amazing place!! You need a parks permit or buy a day permit to enter. It is handicap accessible for the full experience. Best seen on a sunny day. I believe it is a 12 acre lake that is 45 ft deep and stays 45° year round. And you can see the bottom like it is right below you.
Here G — Google review
Absolutely beautiful!! Prettiest thing I’ve seen so far in the wild!!! It’s mesmerizing!! It will capture you and will you stare and watch. Don’t drop your phone. There is a raft, that takes you across the water, and brings you back. Do you can see the bottom of it. The fish are absolutely huge down. And yes, you can see all the way to the bottom of the lake!!! Like I said … absolutely mesmerizing!!
Devon B — Google review
Do not skip this place! It is worth an extra drive wherever you are on the peninsula. Absolutely charming, beautiful green and blue colors in the water, a fascinating spring and the raft itself is cool - super quiet and environmentally friendly. Fee is $11 (for an out-of-state vehicle) and you wait in line to get on the raft. They have a huge gift shop there as well.
JitkaKac — Google review
It's definitely a tourist stop, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth seeing! The water is unbelievable and the hand pulled ride out to the middle of the spring is fun and educational and very pretty with that unearthly aqua water color. Seeing the water coming up through the bottom with enough force to blow the same around is very cool. I do recommend 👍🏼

Waterfalls
Tahquamenon Falls State Park, located in Paradise, is a popular destination known for its stunning waterfalls, woodland hikes, and year-round activities. The park features the impressive Upper Falls, one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, plunging 50 feet into the Tahquamenon River. Additionally, visitors can explore the picturesque Lower Falls with its smaller yet equally beautiful cascades.
My friend and I hiked both the upper and lower falls. We went to the different parking lots and didn’t walk from one to the other. (Although we found out there is a shuttle so you can hike the 4 miles and get a ride back.) The boardwalks are nice and allow for a safe stroll. The steps to the bottom are also safe and sturdy. The falls are impressive and it was a nice excursion. And it wasn’t crowded which was nice.
Megan M — Google review
This was our first trip in the UP and we heard and read so many great things about this park and it lived up to the hype. This is a beautifully maintained park. The pathways are free of debris and easy to walk. This is coming from two people who didn't think they'd be able to walk the whole Lower Falls, let alone the Upper Falls too. The Lower Falls is about a 2-mile walk in total. The Upper Falls felt a little less than that. We had a gorgeous day to walk these paths. I would recommend getting to either one of these fairly early as parking fills up. The lower falls seems to have more parking than the upper but once you get there, you'll be glad you went, especially if you love nature.
Erik L — Google review
A beautifully relaxing space in nature. The state has done a phenomenal job of blending human access and convenience with nature. Easy access wooden walkways to the falls. Great spots to overlook the falls, rent and launch kayaks, or access swim spots on the river. The visitor center has lots of great shopping and snacks that help support the park. We are so glad we decided to veer off our original mapped road trip to add this park as a stop. Well worth the extra mileage and time. Plan on spending at least an hour if not more.
Tanya T — Google review
Beautiful park. The areas near the falls are easy to get to. The top falls has 181 steps down and back up if you want to view it from the Gorge, so be aware. We hiked the 4.5 miles from the bottom to the top falls. There are a lot of ups and downs, roots, soggy areas. If you are out of shape, I would avoid it and drive from the bottom falls to the top after visiting each. If you can hike it, it is beautiful. Round trip was 11 miles of walking. Be sure to plan for the 2.5 hours each way. I wouldn't want to do it in the dark. There is a private shuttle that can take you from one parking lot to the other, $ 20.00 for first person and $5.00 for others in your group. They have limited availability do read the signs and contact them. Gift shops are at the top and bottom falls.
Seth A — Google review
Awesome scenery! Short and easy walk to the waterfalls. Handicap friendly. They have food, beer, ice cream, restrooms, and a few shops. Something for everyone. I'm glad we made the 2.5 drive from Escanaba. It was a little busy when we went with the fall colors. You won't be disappointed.
Craig K — Google review
This is an amazing space. Lots of waterfalls. Rocks can be super slick though. Almost fell myself and watched a number of others fall down. Looked painful. Be careful. Plenty of hiking available. You can wade ino the falls at various points. It feels great to feel the water rushing past your feet.
Gerid ( — Google review
Went with my disabled 20 year old son and my teenage daughter. We went on a Tuesday and it was amazing! They could have used more van disabled spots (we have a side lift) but luckily did find a spot without issue. We were able to walk all around the lower falls and around the little island even though it was not paved. Absolutely impressed with how our day trip went! Highly recommend. They even had family bathrooms (an adult changing cable would have been super convenient)!
Sandy R — Google review
Beautiful spot, a must see, people from all over the country and the world were there today. Have to see the upper and lower (pst...the upper is best for all things.) I can't wait to go back after the construction on the upper bridge and restaurant area. Beautiful views.

The Soo Locks is an impressive engineering marvel that allows ships of various sizes to traverse between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Dating back to the mid-1800s, these gravity-fed locks lift and lower 1,000-foot freighters as well as smaller vessels over a 21-foot drop. Visitors can observe this slow-motion action from a covered observation platform and explore the area's maritime history at the Visitors Center.
Our first experience going through locks. The crew was so informative. I had no idea there were so many locks in the US even after seeing the Panama Canal earlier this year. This is smaller scale but equally vital to commerce and industry. Our Captain took us up the Canada side and back (down) on the US side. We'll visit again and do this tour again.
Fred P — Google review
This was a great experience. The park does not allow any weapons! Leave your pocket knives in the car. Public restroom. The locks are very interesting. My family and 2 other families traveling had a great time. The ice-cream right across the street is amazing and very affordable. Walking strawberries are great but expensive.
Jeremy T — Google review
This may be one of the coolest things Ice seen. Its just amazing watching the big ships move through the lock. There's a a nice viewing platform. A lovely park. And the visitor center is very interesting. Definitely want to come back, 2 hours just isn't enough to enjoy the area and I want to take the boat tour.
Cecily B — Google review
Fascinating experience. You float through a lock upstream, rising 22', tour the St Mary's River a bit, and then head back through a Canadian lock. No passport required. We rode on the Original Soo Locks Boat Tours. Well worth the price!
Scott H — Google review
The Soo Locks are a set of parallel locks, operated and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and they enable ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The locks are located on the St. Marys River between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, between the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan and the Canadian province of Ontario. They bypass the rapids of the river, where the water falls 21 ft (6.4 m). The locks pass an average of 10,000 ships per year. The Soo Locks has a nice visitor center, which provides historical information, as well as current workload and performance statistics. It's well worth spending 25 minutes visiting all the exhibits. A three-level observation deck allows visitors a close-up of the locks in operation.
Howard S — Google review
Was a amazing experience, we got there on a busy day and loved seeing so many ships come thru and 3 - 1000 footers in one day. Waiting to see when the 3rd lock gets done. Definitely will be going back once it's done.
Will M — Google review
Definitely worth the trip. Watched three boats go through on a rainy afternoon. The viewing platform (under roof) is awesome and the historical visitor’s center has great info and visuals to view. Staff was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and engaging.
Paul D — Google review
Took the very informative boat tour. I highly recommend the boat trip since you not only see the 1000 ft ships go thru, we went thru the locks too... so I got the full picture of how the locks work.

Mackinac Island, located in Lake Huron's Straits of Mackinac, is a popular vacation destination known for its rich history and picturesque surroundings. The island, which prohibits most vehicles, offers visitors a unique experience with its stunning arch rock formations and world-famous fudge shops. With a deep historical significance to the Anishinaabe people, the island was once an important spot for fishing and gatherings.
What a great place to visit, lots of beautiful things to see. No cars allowed, the only way around the island is by foot, bicycle or horse. Over 80% of the island is state park. Of course, the main street by the ferry dock is crammed with stores selling souvenirs and such.
Gerry O — Google review
Mackinac Island is definitely a beautiful and unique place with its charming streets, horse carriages, and scenic views. It’s worth experiencing at least once. That being said, it can get very crowded, which makes it less enjoyable for people like me who prefer quieter spots. Also, visiting on a hot sunny day can be overwhelming. Overall, I’d say it’s a great one-time visit, but not somewhere I’d return often.
Aishwarya R — Google review
What a romantic little island. We took a carriage ride around the island and every place we stopped was picture perfect. I felt like I was in a different country.

This really is a town out of time. I recommend a tour of the fort and the cherry cobbler at the tea room. Book a carriage ride around the island and enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants.

What a great escape nice that no cars allowed on the island ,tons of bikes to rent or bring your own we took the horse & buggy ride around part of the island. Lots of shopping, but the fudge is another story we stayed at the KOA in Mackinaw City. Nice clean park differently going back hopefully the next year or 2 . You won't be disappointed

Gorgeous island set back in time where motorized vehicles arent allowed. We highly recommend the horse carriage ride around the island where you can get off & back on at destinations. You can also walk, bike, take a personalized carriage ride/tour, drive your own carriage or motorized scooters. The Secret Garden is a must see!! Sit in a rocking chair on the porch of the Grand Hotel and enjoy the stunning views! Eat at the Chuck Wagon. (Limited seating) Visit Fort Mackinac during one of the event times, cannon firing or artillery) Enjoy views & Lake Breeze. Butterfly House! Forge/Blacksmith. Fudge!

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is a historic lakefront complex located in Paradise, at the very northeastern point of the Upper Peninsula. It features a maritime museum, a working lighthouse, and a seasonal guesthouse. The museum showcases the commitment and sacrifice of sailors on the Great Lakes through artifacts, videos, and exhibits. Whitefish Point Lighthouse, one of Lake Superior's most beloved lighthouses, is also part of this complex.
I have been to the museum twice. I enjoyed it both times. The staff is always incredibly friendly which is a bonus. It's a gorgeous location as well. There is lots to read and learn and multiple artifacts. My personal favorite is seeing the inside of the lighthouse dwellings with their old time dishes and furniture, etcetera. There is also a nice deck overlooking lake Superior. They have a film you can watch on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Unfortunately I always tear up when I watch it but it is very interesting.
Eve K — Google review
All in all a great place to visit, but it's probably not going to take you 3hrs to tour the grounds. Nice 20 minute video on the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which i recommend you watch. Some really good points of interest, some things not so much. The drive is somewhat long and there is only one way in and one way out. The buildings are close so walking should not be an issue. You may encounter a large amount of mosquitos,so prepare for that. Great view of the sandy beach ship graveyard. There are a lot of interesting artifacts and stories in the buildings, so be ready to read a lot. Was not too crowded so much of reading should be in view. It's a pleasant visit but I'll let you be the judge 🤔
Freddy J — Google review
We lucked out on an early October weekend with temps in the 80's at Whitefish Point's Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. One fee gets you into the museum, along with several other buildings on site. There is a wonderful gift shop which helps sustain the museum, so your $$ are well spent. Buildings are in wonderful condition, given that they sit right on Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay. They now offering a wonderful viewing deck of Lake Superior, which is totally accessible to all. You can still kick off your shoes, wander on the beach, and even dip your toes into Lake Superior. Parking is ample.
Terri G — Google review
Great place, many buildings to explore, inside and out, but we only had 40 minutes. They charge $15 per person. All the staff in buildings 1, 3 were enthusiastic and helpful, but they were in a hurry to close up in buildings 2 & 4. Didn't get to go in anymore buildings. I recommend 3 hours. Then afterwards, you can explore the beach and wildlife nature preserve...make it a whole day visit.
Darlene O — Google review
This is a must visit if you're interested in the Great Lakes as well as the Legendary Edmund Fitzgerald. The displays were amazing and informative. Loved learning more about a few of the many shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. Plus everything else with the lighthouse and beach makes this worth the drive and price of admission.
Will M — Google review
Very informative and interesting attraction. You have a museum, living quarters of lighthouse keeper, 15 minute movie about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and a gift shop. There are two observation decks, one on the beach of lake Superior and one for bird watchers. Plenty of parking (free) and clean restrooms. Staff very friendly and there to answer your questions. FYI, if driving ensure you have full tank of gas as gas stations are far & few and gas cost about 30 to 50 cent more in the area. Minimal construction so expect delays during high traffic times. Definitely worth the visit. If you buy tickets inadvance there is virtually no WIFI to pull them up on your phone but they can use your name to pull up tickets you purchased on line. Tickets can be purchased on site as well

This was a wonderful experience. We were on our 15th anniversary vacation. You can go into different museums and walk down to the beach of Lake Superior. You get to learn about the Fitzgerald sinking, get to see how they lived, and learn about the Coast Guard from the day. Very interesting and fun place to visit. Don't forget to visit the gift shop!
Michelle G — Google review
I visit this location EVERY time I visit the U.P. The museum contains a plethora of shipwreck history as well as artifacts found from some of the wreckage. The lighthouse keeper's residence is a highly recommended place to walk through. It is reportedly haunted so it's possible to have a paranormal experience. Be sure to walk out on the Whitefish Point beach. Walk a bit to the west and up toward the dune you will find a weathered memorial with about four photos of some of the crewmen from the Edmund Fitzgerald. The beach is also great for rock picking, but you are not allowed to take driftwood or use metal detectors so be sure to respect the rules. The staff is very friendly and informative. The gift shop has lots of gift and souvenir items as well as books about local history, Michigan haunting, etc.

Historic Sites
Fayette Historic State Park is situated on the shores of Big Bay de Noc, near Snail Shell Harbor in Southern Upper Peninsula. It features a well-preserved 19th-century townsite that was once a bustling industrial community founded by Fayette Brown in the 1860s. The park offers visitors the opportunity to explore historic town sites, campgrounds, and scenic viewpoints from towering limestone cliffs above the harbor.
My family has been going to Fayette since I was a young kid. It's one of my favourite places. Everything about it is great. The scenery, the history, the park staff, everything is just fantastic. It does require a lot of hiking so if walking isn't your thing or if it is hard for you keep that in mind before going. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is one of the least explored treasures in the US and personally I hope it stays that way. The UP has managed to stay a little wild and a little rough and it is all the better for it. Even though this state park is well visited you still feel as if you may be one of the first people to explore it. The staff have done an excellent job of preserving the history of the place without making it look manufactured. If you're looking for photo ops, you can't find a better place. There isn't a bad angle here. Improvements have been made recently to the visitors center and many of the displays. The bathrooms are clean and there are water stations throughout the park. It may be out in the middle of nowhere but it is definitely worth the drive. Pack a lunch, make it a picnic, you'll have a great time.

First time visiting the UP and this was one of our recommendations to visit. Very interesting story with a very interactive feeling. You can enter into almost everything and see exactly how it was preserved. The limestone cliff sides are also beautiful especially if you can kayak or get up close. You can get kayak rentals for $30 ea. For 24 hours. Ask at the park entrance.

Very interesting history. I think it's strange it never took off as a town and it was made into a historical park. Neat place and if I had more time would have stayed longer to explore. I'd say you could easily spend 2-3 hours here.

We brought our 18, 15, and 8 year old kids and everyone enjoyed the area and history. The sights, both natural and man made, are beautiful and interesting. It was a bright, hot, sunny day and no one was begging to go home early or leave to get food. 😅 In fact, they were eager to go building to building and made sure they saw every placard. I'd go again in a heartbeat. They've done an amazing job preserving the site and presenting it in an interesting and engaging way.

Amazing state park! This is one of the coolest state parks I’ve been too in Michigan. It has so much history and the DNR have done a great job keeping up on this park. It was so cool to walk around and see how they used to live and work. There are signs everywhere that tell you the history of the building or even the history of the buildings that used to be there. I 100% recommend coming here and if you do make sure you stop in the gift shop and see the scale model of what the busy town used to be like in its heyday!
Nathan W — Google review
The old town was such a fun piece of history. It was so cool to imagine what it had been like and the different residences as you walked around. This is a good afternoon and the ice cream in the visitors ce territorial was such a good price you cannot go wrong coming to this one. Great hikes out on the ridge as well.

I absolutely love this place! I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's amazing, historical and well managed. And dogs allowed!!!! My dog had a blast. We saw some deer too. If you love history and want a place fun for the whole family, come here!
Mickey A — Google review
This was our first time exploring this State Park. Might i say wow!!!!! The views are quite spectacular!!! The historical aspect of the place is intriguing. The buildings that remain from this time gone by are very interesting. They tell a story of hard-working people just trying to survive and make a living. Most buildings are open for viewing. Currently, part of their parking lot is under construction, so while there still is ample parking, i would suggest getting there early. Park opens at 9 a.m. and you will need a recreation pass to get in. Day pass is $11, and yearly is around $40. While all pathways are generally easy walking, they do have some elevation to it and may not be suitable for everyone , especially those who experience walking difficulties. Overall, an experience worth checking out if you get the chance!!!! I would very much recommend visiting 👍👍

Seney National Wildlife Refuge is a vast wilderness with wetlands and pine forests, providing a home for migratory birds and the famous Strangmoor Bog. Visitors can enjoy encounters with various wildlife such as moose, deer, swans, turtles, ducks, bald eagles, and muskrats. The refuge offers activities like marsh drives, biking trails, nature trails through wetlands and meadows. Additionally, visitors can indulge in paddling, hunting, fishing and birding opportunities.
One of our favorite places to visit when in the U.P. Don't go expecting to see deer, bear, and moose. But if you go with hopes to see some cool birds and possibly a muskrat, beaver, and many other small animals - you'll likely be pleasantly surprised. The visitor center is very informative. Take the driving loop slow, like the sign says. It's a stunning drive, especially in the fall (don't go too late or you'll miss the birds!). Free to visit, but donations are welcome.

Beautiful and well maintained two-tracks. Seen lots of different birds and if you look into the cattails you will see the Canadian geese with their babies. Seen a few deer and a beaver.

Essential to visit alongside your pictured rocks trip! Bird-watching paradise, even from your car. The Robinson Rd trails were also great, highly recommend a mountain bike. Seeing an otter and beaver in the daytime was incredible, would love to go back at dawn or dusk to see even more. Could easily spend a few days exploring the whole preserve, can’t wait to get back.

What an absolute hidden gem. If you're even a little bit interested in birdwatching, this must make it onto your U.P. itinerary. I stopped into the temporary visitor center and was greeted by a trio of friendly and very knowledgable gentlemen who gave me the rundown on where to go and what to expect and sent me with a bunch of really nice maps, postcards and a book about the refuge. I hadn't been here in decades and I definitely won't wait so long next time. This is a fantastic place for birding if you are traveling with kids or people with limited mobility.

Horse flies and deer flies are out in force!! We were afraid to get out of the truck. There were 100's swarming around the truck as we drove thru the refuge. But the scenery and wildlife was beautiful!

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Michigan's largest state park, is a haven for nature enthusiasts seeking vast wilderness and remote lakes. The park offers opportunities to spot black bears and provides a sense of solitude in the backcountry. Divided into three main scenic areas, visitors can explore Lake of the Clouds with its stunning overlook and hike along the Escarpment Trail.
It's one of the most beautiful parks! There's so much to do & see, with lots of places to camp. I advise you to go to their website and reserve your spot as far in advance as possible because they fill up fast!

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is definitely one of the best state parks I have visited in the United States. The section I visited contained four different waterfalls that were all amazing sights to see. The suspension bridge over the most northern waterfall is wonderful. The river opens up to Lake Superior and makes for beautiful views and amazing hikes.
B A — Google review
Incredible hiking with Lake of the Clouds being the obvious highlight, I recommend parking at the small government peak parking “lot” by the main park entrance and doing the 2ish miles (mostly uphill) to the peak, best views/pics from that side, over driving to the touristy photo spot. Highly recommend going here in general, regardless of whatever trail you choose, it’s a gorgeous area, Pure Michigan!!

Our trip to the Porkies was planned for September 21st, 2025, for a 5-day 31 MI backpacking loop. We made Backcountry camping site reservations online ($20 per night for a site for up to 6), which took a little getting used to, but was pretty easy. Check in on a Sunday morning at the visitor center was very a good experience, a beautiful Visitor Center and a smooth process to turn a reservations into permits. We started out along m107 at the Government Peak Trailhead and walked the Escarpment Trail, a little of the Lake Superior Trail, Little Carp, river Trail, North Mirror Lake Trail, and the Government Peak trail. towards Lake of the clouds. There were several beautiful overlooks of the Lake of the clouds area where we could see the tips of the trees starting to change color and it was beautiful. The trails we chose took us along rivers with waterfalls, Lake superior, Lake of the clouds, and Mirror Lake Trails were well marked and easy to follow. There are plenty of steep up and downs, but we found those we're tiring but not that. There are large sections of Muddy marshy area so be ready, and River Crossings, so be ready to get your feet wet. Based on what we saw, the park is well kept. There are many more trails to explore, and the area around Lake Superior is quite beautiful. I highly recommended. Actually, I probably shouldn't be telling you all of this! If the park becomes more popular, reservations may be harder to get:-) do check out the website, because they do have cabins near the road and near the lake available for rent as well as cabins and Yurts in the backcountry. There are several places for swimming access to Lake Superior. Good luck and enjoy.

One of the most beautiful state parks I’ve ever been to in my home state of Michigan! The lady at the visitor center was so friendly and so knowledgeable, she guided us to areas that would have the best view for us , as we weren’t walking any of the trails. We spent the entire day seeing Lake of the Clouds, several waterfalls and enjoying the beauty of all the color in the state park ! We were able to stop multiple times and walk along Lake Superior and find some stones as well ! It was truly an amazing day spent here !

Roads well maintained and staff was friendly. Camped out one night on the Big Carp Trail and it was easy to obtain a permit. Lake of the Clouds was worth a visit and easy to access with a ramp and couple steps.

We hiked the Presque Isle River trail on the western side of the Park. There is a good boardwalk on the western side of the river with viewing platforms at each of the waterfalls. It is worth the drive there and I would highly recommend it.

What a marvelous, beautiful, and authentically wild place to visit! So much culture, history, and unique aspects of society live here harmonious with nature. The people were so kind and genuine as we traveled (early season tourists). We explored everything on the west, north, and south sides of the peninsula. I saw so many things I've only read about in a book - it was fantastic LIVING it! (Do NOT forget the bug spray!) Rain will not deter your trip to this majestic part of the US. If early season travelers, be prepared for cold nights.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is a scenic and historical treasure. The beauty of the north woods and Lake Superior shoreline is reason enough to make the Keweenaw country a destination attraction, and the copper mining history of the Houghton-Hancock-Calumet area is a major bonus. This free 37-acre park is open to visitors seven days a week and showcases Lakenen's whimsical and satirical creations.
I think the last time I was here was around 25 years ago, and there is so much more here than my last visit! If you love junkyard art, this place is a must-see! He's really built this place into something spectacular. It's free to enter, and takes around an hour and a half if you're hiking it (I wasn't actually paying attention to the time, so I'm making an educated guess. You can drive through, too, if you can't or just don't want to walk). I recommend getting out and walking it, though, if you're able. There is a playground area, shelters, picnic tables, several porta-potties, and a decent amount of parking. There were quite a lot of vehicles in the lot when we arrived, but I had no issues getting a parking spot. Besides the sculptures, there's also a lovely pond with beautiful flowers, a nature trail with a boardwalk (and hidden things to find along the way), a big area to rest and have something to eat, a playground area, small concert venue, and some nice memorials, including one for the Edmund Fitzgerald. There is a small souvenir shop, as well (I don't believe there were any snacks, though). There's so much history here, some seriousness mixed in with silly zany craziness, and tons of beauty. What a great legacy! If you're visiting the UP for waterfalls, rock hunting, fishing, relaxation, or whatever, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary!

This place is AMAZING! I highly recommend a visit to anyone in the area. You can walk or drive the trail while looking at such unique pieces of art that are welded, painted, and anything else you can think of! New stuff is added from time to time so it always seems like there is something new to see. There’s also a bog walk. Did I mention it’s free (but donate!!!) and very kid friendly. We had the best time and I love that the artist is local. Amazing time, thank you so much!

Absolutely amazing! At least a hundred sculptures. What this guy can do with metal that he repurposes is unbelievable! You can drive or walk. We walked. Probably 1 mi worth of walking to see all the sculptures. You just can't imagine his creativity until you see it! A must stop!! Open 24 hours. No fee.
Bruce W — Google review
This free exhibit is definitely a unique experience. I would have given it 5 stars, but quite a few left-sided political pieces have been added. Many of us are tired of having political views shoved at us. But that is their freedom of speech. The art itself is unique and we enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the art tributes to our military.

Self-guided, free tour 24/7! Donations always appreciated. Every time I go, there are new displays and I’m certain I miss areas from backtracking…cool place to stop at on your way through!

We parked and walked through the sculpture park. There are a bunch of unique creations throughout the Upper Peninsula woods. These are some wild, unique and unusual art! It’s near Marquette and just off the highway. It’s free but there are donations spots to help the park. They also had a gift and refreshment stand. We might have gotten carried away with the number of pictures we took. Lakenenland is a must do stop if you’re in the area.

Isle Royale National Park is a remote archipelago in Lake Superior, near the Canadian border. Established in 1940, it encompasses Isle Royale and numerous small islets. The park's secluded setting offers pristine wilderness with thick forests, rugged ridges, and scenic shorelines. It's known for its abundant moose and timber wolf populations. Visitors can enjoy hiking, kayaking, and scuba diving in the surrounding waters.
Our 45th National Park. They say it the least visited one in the southern 48 states. There are limited ways to get here- ferry or seaplane. We booked a ferry 5 months ahead, for an ease of mind. Captain and crew were very friendly and helpful. We were lucky with no rain weather. But if it was rainy many people would get wet, as the main room on the ferry can’t fit all the passengers. I do recommend having layers, I had rain cover for backpack just in case, plus rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof boots/shoes. Weather is truly unpredictable here. We did 2 small hikes- Nature trail and Grace creek overlook. That’s pretty much what you can do in 4 hours on the island from Washington harbour. They have a nice restroom, a visitor center and a cafe near the port.

Have hiked end to end twice. A wide range of experiences from tranquility to misery can change your outlook on life and make you appreciate the amenities we have at home. Experience raw wilderness unspoiled by humans, dark sky stargazing, gorgeous sunsets, and brisk swimming in Lake Superior. It can also be a rewarding social experience meeting friendly folks at the campgrounds.

Our family just got back from a 3 day trip on this amazing island. The island offers great amenities when close to the harbors but seclusion when you hike. The campgrounds were beautiful and clean. This was one of my favorite trips that our family has done. I am looking forward to going back!!!

Least visited park in the lower 48 but the most re-visited. You can do a day trip, but this park deserves an immersive wilderness experience. Spent almost five days here and not a moment felt wasted.
Isaac H — Google review
Beautiful island. If you are looking to walk the Greenstone Ridge Tr. do so in the fall or early in the summer before all the plants grow too high as they can become quite a pain to walk through when hiking one end of the island to the other. Careful of leeches in Hatchet Lake, and Lake Desor is home to some Wolf activity so keep a look out for some cool sightings near the lake. MAKE SURE to travel from Rock Harbor to Windigo when crossing the island due to the elevation gain, if you start in Windigo it is nothing but uphill for many miles. Lastly, BRING BUG SPRAY, otherwise you'll be eaten alive before you even start your hike(s).
Jack V — Google review
The Lodge has a million-dollar view! There were many challenges with a runny bathtub and a bathroom window that wouldn't open. For the cost of the room - 253.00 a night - I expected daily cleaning and prompt correction of the plumbing issue. Neither occurred. I was able to get garbage emptied and towels replaced. I am allergic to gluten, and I was counting on the many gf options that were on the menu. Unfortunately, there was a gap in planning over the 4th of July Holiday and many items on the limited menu ran out. I was given the wrong pizza and spent 2 hours of our precious time on the island screaming in the bathroom. I have given Aramark two opportunities to make this right and I was only told there would be retraining. Isle Royale is one of the most expensive parks to visit. It is as beautiful, if not more so, than Acadia. I do expect more value for the cost.
C A — Google review
The ferry ride over was insane!! 90% of the passengers were puking, coffee machines were flying around, fans flying, and imagine the bathroom situation. They were reporting 14 foot waves. BUT 10/10 recommend for the “experience” 😂 The ride back off the island was uneventful. We took the ferry from Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor where we started our hike. Rangers were very informative and there were so many more options at the camp store than I would have thought. We had a wolf encounter while at the Rock Harbor Shelter, we had to shoo him away from taking our food bag, Mid breakfast.
Kara V — Google review
A Hauntingly Beautiful Visit to Isle Royale. But Poor Timing and Unsettling News We unknowingly chose an unfortunate time to visit Isle Royale National Park. Persistent fog blanketed the island, causing the cancellation of all boat tours and water activities, except for the main ferry service. Even the seaplane, which usually offers a scenic and efficient way to arrive or depart, was repeatedly delayed due to the low visibility. Despite the weather, we still managed to explore some of the island’s beautiful trails. Hikes like Suzy’s Cave and the Scoville Point Trail offered stunning, if moody, views of the landscape. The rain and haze transformed the scenery into something more mysterious and brooding, an atmosphere that gave the park a haunting kind of charm, though it made certain parts feel more isolated and eerie than serene. Adding to that sense of unease, we later learned, days after we had already left, that two bodies were discovered at a remote campsite on the very same day we were in the park. The news wasn’t mentioned or made known to any visitors during our stay, which made the discovery all the more unsettling in hindsight. Overall, Isle Royale remains a unique and rugged destination, but the timing of our trip, coupled with the weather and the tragic news, made for a strange and somber experience. I’d love to return one day under clearer skies and calmer circumstances to truly appreciate all the park has to offer.

Wonderful walking path to view all this beauty! If you go out to see the Black Rocks, BE SURE to wear appropriate shoes!!! Very rough terrain to reach them, but worth it if you are physically able. I would definitely come back here when in the area:)

Absolutely spectacular! We always have our furbabies with us so we don’t stay for long but each time we come we discover something new and magical. Visitors beware there are certain hours the road is closed to vehicles to allow for bike and foot traffic, also that dogs are not allowed outside of the vehicle. An absolute joy to visit!

Beautiful! For those not from the area, its located in Marquette which is a very cute town. Its the perfect mix of trails and downtown. The trails are very easy, not intense so good for beginner hikers. Beautiful views of the lake and the black rocks are very cool!
Rachael H — Google review
Beautiful views of the lake and black rocks. A good mix of more fun and challenging hiking paths, as well as easier and serene ones through the woods. You can also drive through a one way that loops around the peninsula if you wish or walk along the road for a more direct path to the black rocks on foot. If you take some of the harder trails, be careful particularly on the side of some of the hills. Some are quite steep on the side of the path.

Stopped in over the Labor Day Weekend, my wife wanted to check out the Black Rocks. I knew nothing about them until we walked out and saw a large number of people jumping off into the water. We were not suited to indulge at this time, but it looked to be fun. Also, walked the breakwall near the ore dock. This looks like a great place to spend summer time when in the area again.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Superior, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is Michigan's largest state park and a true gem for nature lovers. Spanning an impressive 60,000 acres, this pristine wilderness boasts towering old-growth forests and breathtaking cliff-top views. With over 90 miles of hiking trails winding through its rugged terrain, adventurers can explore everything from serene waterfalls to rustic cabins.
What a gorgeous park. Lake of the clouds is absolutely gorgeous. Pretty views from lookout. There are quite a few hikes in the park. Some have small parking lots so take this into consideration. The Escarpment Trail, is just over 8 miles and 1653ft elevation gained. Super pretty views. There are seven waterfalls to check out. A lot of wildlife to encounter. Camping there - The campground is split into two loops. The east loop is a generator-friendly side, while the west loop is generator-free. Time recommended in park - three days two nights.

The views are stunning. There are so many ways to experience the mountains. You could be here for days & not see everything.

Oldest hardwood forest in North America! The roads are easy to navigate, clearly marked. The lake in the clouds was breathtaking and worth the trip. Vistas galore with many other tourists unfortunately. I highly recommend Porupune mountains

Breathtaking views of Lake of the Clouds after just a short hike from the access point.
Kathryn B — Google review
As an avid hiker from southeastern Michigan, I've been wanting to hike the Porcupines for years. I did the Government Peak--Connector Line--Big Carp River--Escarpment trail loop, which took about 7 hours and was a real beatdown because the Escarpment Trail, which I did last, had the toughest terrain. But it was totally worth it. I'm into seeing big trees and old growth forest and the Porcupines have one of the largest remaining stretches of old growth Hemlock forest in the country. This forest has a dark, epic feel, unlike other kind of forest in the eastern US. And here, you can hike through it for hours on end, which is a really special experience. Lake of the Clouds is as beautiful as everyone says it is and made for an especially satisfying 'big reveal' after 5 hours of hiking and a final big climb up a hill. But as pretty as it is, for me, the real highlight was the miles of hiking through primeval forest. There aren't many places where you can do that, especially in the eastern US.

Quincy Mine, located in Hancock, MI, is a former mineral extraction plant that offers museum exhibits and an underground ride to a mine shaft. It provides a close-up look at the history of copper mining in the Keweenaw Peninsula area. Visitors can take a tour that starts and ends in the Shaft No. 2 hoist house, where they are provided with hard hats for safety. The tour includes a brief introductory video and a visit to the hoist housed in the building.
Did the 5pm tour. Julia was our guide. She had a positive attitude and was very passionate and knowledgeable about rocks and the history of mining in Michigan. My husband and kids enjoyed the tour. Learning about and seeing the tools miners used was fascinating. Would recommend a tour for adults and kids. Bathrooms at the facility and a nice gift shop. I found some beautiful earrings that I bought. Bring a jacket or something its cold in the mine.
Rebecca M — Google review
Great experience! Our tour guide was very educational! He was very interactive with the group and had a great personality. Above ground was very interesting and underground was eye opening. Tour takes about 2 1/2 hours total. Wearing a thick hoodie or a jacket is ideal because it’s around 40ish degrees down there and dark. The gift shop is nice BUT the mineral museum has better options for rocks/minerals.
Melissa — Google review
Our tour guide Julie was terrific. She shared an incredible amount of information with enthusiasm for 2+ hours. We gained a greater understanding of the hard life of miners. Well worth the ticket price!
Barbara V — Google review
5/5 stars would totally recommend! Our tour guide was Julia and she was just a gem! She was so sweet and had so much knowledge in speaking along the tour! I have lived in Michigan my whole life and had no idea that all this history lies within copper harbor! This tour is great for all ages! Very interesting and informational! Very good price for all you get to learn and see!
Kirstin M — Google review
We had a great time with our family touring the grounds and tourist areas of the mine. The guided tour was very informative; ask lots of questions! I wish we could really see what they were looking for still in the mine walls! After hearing the mine is 9000 feet deep, it is almost disappointing to only get to go 300 feet deep (though everything else is flooded). It is hard to imagine the true scale of what was happening. Cool place. Worth a visit.
Jeff R — Google review
Well worth the trip They offer much more than we could do but we walked the grounds. Many ruins that were soo interesting. Just us, no other people. It was free. Easy to walk. Train cars, buildings, all kinds of old mining things used back in the day for the process. My husband took more pictures than I did, I was just enjoying the area. Great gift shop where we purchased a great flash lite for hunting up perlite stones. (good price, cheaper than Amazon, same flashlite) I would go back…
Roxanne K — Google review
Made reservations online highly recommended. Interesting place to visit to learn about the history of copper mining in the area. Learn about steam hoists, adducts, and what it was like working in the mine. Complete with the sights and sounds of a copper mine. Worth the visit. We were on the last tour of the day by the time we got out the shaft house and visitor center was closed. So we had to come back and visit a second day. Recommend being there an hour or two ahead of time if you want to explore the grounds outside the mine. Or spend that much time afterwards.
Robert S — Google review
We visited the Quincy Mine this summer with our family, the seize of the group was about twelve visitors. We had an amazing experience. Our guide Tim made the history of the mine come alive with fascinating stories and insights. The tram ride and underground tour were impressive and gave a real sense of the miners’ world.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, offers a glimpse into the region's history and natural beauty. The park features a well-preserved 1844 fort and one of the first lighthouses on Lake Superior. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about life in the mid-1800s during the copper rush. The campground provides modern amenities for both tents and RVs, making it an ideal base for exploring the area.
Beautifully restored 1800s fort with historical displays. We did a self guided tour. Could probably have stayed for 2 hours. Bought a day pass ($11) to park across the road where there was a rocky beach on Lake Superior and a small waterfall.
Brittney M — Google review
Beautiful interesting walk about the lake and forts. It cost $11 daily pass. There is a little store and bathrooms. Dog friendly. Great info and how its presented. Walking through the fort buildings allowed for real feels on how they lived in the 1800s. Easy to follow and read info. Pretty views.

Historic State Park - Interesting Historic Site by the Lake Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is a great stop to explore Michigan’s early military history. The restored buildings and displays make it easy to imagine life on the frontier in the 1840s. An insider fact: the fort was built not for battle, but mainly to keep order among miners during the Copper Rush — and by the time it was finished, most soldiers were no longer needed. Beautiful lake views and a peaceful setting make it well worth a visit.
Manuela ( — Google review
Beautiful State Park, a jewel! Very quiet and friendly. Camp hosts are very kind and were offering free coffee and hot chocolate! Quite easy to bike to Copper Harbor to catch boat ride to Isle Royale. Use trail, much nicer than on the road shoulder. Many spots across east campground to get fresh water. Our site 3 was level and nice, just in front of the lake. Some sites are very small and uneven (eg the 20s row). Laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers. Close to the historical fort, can easily walk there and there is a store to buy essential goods and gears. Firewood available at the entrance but pricy at 7$ the small bundle. Don’t count on the campground wifi, quite weak and not reliable. Bring your starlink!
Patrick T — Google review
We went here and left with an appreciation of how challenging it must have been to maintain a fort in the harsh conditions the UP can bring in that era. The buildings had a lot of neat displays that were informative! When we went, there was no one else there and it was peaceful exploration for the fam!
K M — Google review
Nice historical park, takes about 1-2 hours to go through the entire place. Most buildings are open and all are in well cared for condition. Gift shop with snacks and bathrooms available. Dog friendly grounds as well, not allowed in buildings. Plenty of parking. Park is free to visit with day pass.

Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, offers a picturesque shoreline and abundant opportunities for fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. The Keweenaw Peninsula's northern location creates a unique climate that results in stunning fall colors from late September to mid-October. Rockhounds can appreciate various specimens such as agates and Michigan's state gemstone Chlorastolite around Isle Royale and Manitou Islands.

The cleanest fresh lake left mostly thanks to Canada, if it was only in America it would be polluted like the rest. If you love the ocean but live in the Midwest driving to the ocean may not be always feasible. I'd suggest that the Great Lakes are a very adequate substitute. And the Mother of all Great Lakes would have to be Lake Superior it's vastness and beauty is mesmerizing. Every time I've been there with my kids they cannot wait to come back to see it again. Truly fun for the whole family.

A huge huge lake, but one that is absolutely gorgeous. It is like a sea in itself. The lake has a weather forecast of its own and can be dangerous when the weather is not fair. It has a number of beaches along side and the park office will guide you for all the activities you can do here. It is recommended to here with some experience for any of the water activities. There are some fantastic view points and the drive around is a must do!

Very nice to visit, not far from the parking lot. 300 ft walk upwards but do-able. Hiked up with a 30lb baby attached to me so not bad lol. The board walk is also great to walk little longer but more to see! They even put up binoculars for people who have red-green color blindness to enjoy a more vibrant view. I thought it was awesome.

Gorgeous spot with a view of the lake and the Porcupine Mountains. The viewing area is at the end of a 7-mile drive that is quite scenic. The path to the overlook is short, paved and fairly steep. At the top, you can enjoy the views from a flatter viewing area on the right, or the more adventurous can climb some rocks for a nice view.

The Eben Ice Caves, located in Eben Junction, offer a unique natural wonder in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The 2.3-mile round trip hike to the ice caves is best suited for those who enjoy snowshoeing and are prepared for intermediate level difficulty. Visitors can stay at a beautiful house overlooking the Au Train River while exploring this stunning winter attraction. During the winter months, visitors can traverse through the snow and explore the breathtaking ice formations within the caves.
Huge parking area with bathrooms. Ice spikes are a must. The 1 mile trail to the caves is beautiful. When you get closer there are hills up snd down. I also used hiking poles to help. What a site to see!

The ice caves are beautiful. We went in the morning. There weren't many people. Plenty of parking. It's about a mile hike to the cave. We were there for about an hour and it began to get crowded when we left. Make sure you have ice spikes or you'll struggle. There are hills you have to climb to get to the caves plus the ice at the caves.

Great winter hike, but WEAR ICE CLEATS. Mile hike from our parking spot to the ice cave. Last 100 ft were the trickiest steep and slippery. $5 parking "donation" as it's on private property as I understand. It was great fun

A Must-Visit Winter Adventure! The Eben Ice Caves in Michigan are absolutely stunning and worth every step of the half-mile hike to get there. The hike itself is relatively easy, but during icy conditions, it can be slippery, so I highly recommend grabbing a pair of affordable ice cleats from Amazon or a local store—they make all the difference! Once you arrive, the caves are a breathtaking natural wonder, with sparkling icicles and frozen formations that make for incredible photos. It's a great spot for families, couples, or anyone looking to experience Michigan's winter beauty.

If your into outdoor winter adventures, this is a great spot. Moderate hike in , that could have a few slippery spots, micro spikes make the hike much easier. Our senior tour bus came here to see the ski jump and enjoy our pasty dinner in the memorial pavilion. What a sight to behold. Isle Royale is a remote island in the Great Lakes, part of a national park accessible by ferry. It's known for its camping options and lack of permanent residents. Rockhounds can find Michigan's official gemstone, the chlorastrolite or Isle Royale Greenstone here. The island offers 36 campgrounds and well-marked trails for backpacking, with options for enclosed shelters or tent sites at Windigo.
An absolutely life-changing experience. If you are questioning whether or not to come here and are on the fence, definitely visit Isle Royale. I stayed at Three Mile, Daisy Farms, Mcargoe Cove, West Chickenbone, and Moskey Basin. If I had to rank them, it would be 1. Moskey Basin- absolutely beautiful and super cool rock formations, and a sandy beach. 2-Daisy farms-very large, nice dock. Water super clear and blue, and campsites were nice 3-Mcargoe Cove-super friendly people, boat access, and a beaver dam across the cove! 4- Three mile- nice dock, clean latrine, and only 3 miles from Rock Harbor. 5-West Chickenbone-Very mosquitoey, and campsites were hard to navigate. It was a long, confusing hike and we weren't sure where to go in order to get to the campsite. Still a good one, but backcountry so no water access except chickenbone lake, which I am not sure if it has algae blooms. My experience with Isle Royale was amazing and if you get a group of people together, it is super fun.
Stina — Google review
Well my scouts had to choose between Yellowstone and Isle Royale for a summer trip (with the flooding, I'm glad they picked here). I took ages 9-16 out. We opted for a ferry ride out and back. We we spent 5 nights on the Isle. Backpacked to different campsites everyday. The trails are well marked (we hiked 32 miles of the island, with a lot more to go). The locations of all campsites are also well marked. At Windigo, there are 2 different options for sleeping. There are enclosed shelters or tent sites. We chose a shelter for our final night since it is right on the inlet. We were able to see several moose walking the waters at sunset. Red Fox also visited our site. The cove has a spectacular view. Even though the water was chilly, the scouts were out splashing around, having a great time. While hiking, we ran across very few people on the trails. Very few hikers and the park being so remote, were huge parts of the peacefulness and quietness that we all enjoyed. The rangers were all fantastic and the employees at the shop were also friendly. The shop does have some supplies, but they only get shipments every 4 weeks. So if you are planning on being there just overnight or several nights be prepared, they may not have what you need. You must be able to filter your water, chemically treat it, or boil it. Only windigo and the northern port have potable water. Cell service is basically non existent. Every now and then, I had an American signal. Other times I picked up a Canadian signal. I am definitely going back. Wether it is with more scouts or by myself.
Derek A — Google review
Isle Royale is a beautiful park. It's very remote and the further you get from the boat dock, the more dense the forest gets. Lots of vocal wildlife including moose. I went here for a day trip, which meant about 4 hours on the island between the ferry rides. There are plenty of easy hikes in the area, but also long ones if you plan for overnight camping.
Zachariah R — Google review
Secluded park with lots of moose and wildlife. Most dense forest I have ever been too. There was about half the people doing long trip hiking and the other half like me visited for a half day. This park is a ferry ride away and is carry in and carry out so you really need to plan advance to visit and stay here. I enjoyed the park immensely though.
M L — Google review
Isle Royal is my favorite place. We stayed for 3 days at the cabin. We were lucky to see many animals during our stay. Next time I would love to stay much longer.
Yulia F — Google review
Isle Royale is Michigan’s only national park and also the least visited national park in the country. That alone makes it worth the visit if you want to avoid crowds. Backpacking the island is not for beginners, but the terrain is easy with few technical areas. We had spectacular weather while we were backpacking. We went in early July a few years ago and only had the mosquitos to deal with along a couple trails and some camp sites near the water. I’d strongly recommend taking the seaplane to make the most of your trip.

Oswald’s Bear Ranch, located in Newberry, is a renowned family-friendly attraction in the Upper Peninsula. It is home to over 40 rescued North American black bears living in four large enclosed habitats. The ranch's commitment to conservation efforts for the bears has earned it high praise from conservationists. Visitors can explore the 240-acre woodland area and even have their photos taken with adorable bear cubs.
During our road trip around the Great Lakes, we stopped at Oswald Bear Ranch and I’m glad we did. It’s a cute little place with a very friendly staff that makes you feel welcome right away. We got to learn a little about bears, which was both fun and educational, and of course couldn’t resist doing the photo op where you actually get to pet a bear. 🐻 It’s a unique experience you don’t come across every day, and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Highly recommend for families, animal lovers, or anyone looking for a memorable stop along their trip.

This is absolutely a must do in the UP. Not only is the baby bear adorable if you do choose to take photos with one, but feeding apples to the adult bears was a joy! A few things to keep in mind. We visited in September of 2025. The admission price ($40 for the car), the baby bear photo ($10) and the apples ($4 per bag, you want several bags!) all only accept cash. But the gift ship does take cards and it was a great gift shop. Lots of choices for clothing and other items and reasonably priced.
Michelle J — Google review
My husband and I visited the ranch 3 days ago for the first time. It was a one of a kind experience! One of my favorite things we did and we will definitely be back! Feeding the bears was so cool and feeding/petting the cub was a dream. The staff was super friendly, all of the bears are adorable. Thank you!
Jenna S — Google review
Oswald's Bear Ranch was incredible. When you get there you can buy some apples to feed the bears. The bears definitely know when you have the apples and would sit up looking extra cute so you would throw them more apples. At set times throughout the day, they have it set so you can go in a certain pen and feed one of the cubs and get your pictures taken with the bear. The cub we fed was 8 months old and was already incredibly strong! I highly recommend visiting the bear ranch! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there.
Bobbie W — Google review
The bears were so much fun to watch and feed! The kids had a blast tossing apples to them. While getting pictures with the cub, the handlers were great and took loads of pictures for us! Overall, great stop if you are an animal lover🙂

It has always been my dream to see a wild bear. My husband surprised me with this place. We were on our honeymoon. The owners have an awesome set up at the sanctuary you can definitely tell ALL bears are happy and taken care off stuff was super friendly. You even get to feed a baby bear. The staff walk you thru it and stay with you and make sure your 100% safe. I hate we live 7 hours away. But if your EVER up in the Upper Peninsula definitely stop here !!!
Kaylynn N — Google review
$30 per car $4 per bag of apples to feed bears $10 to take a group photo, on someone's phone from your group, with one of the cubs Fun experience with more bears than you realize. Easily walkable but might be tough for elderly or some handicapped. Has a gift shop.
Here G — Google review
Always so great to see the bears up close and in a very natural setting. Take time to walk the long way around their enclosures - about a half mile but well worth it to see how much space they have and get a glimpse of some of their dens. Feed them apples, watch them take a swim in their pond, and see the yound males wrestle around and play. Their new souvenir shop is AMAZING, too!

Waterfall
Nature & Parks
Nestled within the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Miners Falls is a must-visit for waterfall lovers. This breathtaking 60-foot cascade tumbles over a sandstone ledge, creating a mesmerizing sight that draws visitors year-round. The journey to the falls is made easy by a well-maintained gravel path that spans just 1.2 miles round trip, complete with wooden stairs leading down to an observation platform for an up-close view of the rushing water.
Beautiful, wooded walk through tall trees and a wide gravel path to the waterfall. Gushing waterfall when we visited with a nice, cool mist breeze. Easy-moderate hike, 1.2 miles (.6 miles to waterfall and then back to the parking area). A few hill step-downs at the start of the trail and about 50 steps to get to the lower viewing deck of the falls (which is best for viewing). There is an upper deck viewing area but the view of the entire waterfall is much more limited. Other than the 3-4 step downs at the start of the trail, it’s mostly handicap inclusive.

This is an amazing waterfall. About .6 miles to hike in. Nothing drastic. 72 steps at the end and you can walk down to the lower park. There is challenging terrain once at the bottom but you can get to the base of the falls. Beautiful and feels great!
Gerid ( — Google review
.6 of a mile hike to miner falls but so beautiful. You’re able to go down into the falls as well.
Amanda S — Google review
A gorgeous waterfall with multiple viewpoints. 15 minutes from the parking lot to the falls or less. I visited on the last weekend of September around 1pm and it was pretty busy; the parking lot was full enough for cars to line the road coming up. Don’t let that deter you! Only about half of visitors or less ended up at the bottom of the falls due to the steep and rugged climb down, so I was able to get about 3 minutes uninterrupted with the falls for clear photos. The climb down involves a very steep rooted path over the rocks with a roughly 4’ wall of rock to scale when coming back up about midway (a foot step is carved in the stone but kids will definitely need help). There are two viewing platforms across from the top if you can’t make it down, but I saw a group of 7-10y/o kids and at the bottom with their parents.

Finally posting from August. Beautiful hike thru the woods. It does involve some stairs and inclines. My Apple Watch clocked it at 1.34 miles and 30minutes.

Sugarloaf Mountain, located in Marquette, offers breathtaking vistas of Lake Superior and other landmarks such as the Superior Dome, Upper Ore Dock, Wetmore Landing, Little Presque Isle, and Hogsback Mountain. The hike to the top is relatively quick and easy with two trail options: an easier route around the mountain and a more challenging trail involving rock scrambling. The peak stands at approximately 1000 feet above sea level and features three observation platforms for soaking in the panoramic views.
Aside from the stairways there are other ways you can take from the parking lot to climb up if you wanted to go a different route or find a place for bouldering. It’s a beautiful little mountain with a pretty view🌄

I’m in love with this place! This is a 30min hike one way. I have done it 3 times. It has iconic views, the hike is totally worth it! This last time I went for the sunrise. The photos don’t do justice. For a good sunrise, be there 30 minutes before sunrise! They have two ways to go, easy and hard ( hard way is shorter) just follow the hike path and signs. Doable for kids ( I would say 7 yrs and up) it does require to climb a bit of stairs.
Patricia D — Google review
Such a great day! Easy to find, excellent free parking and pit toilet available. Choices on how strenuous you want to be on your way to the top. Gorgeous hike awaits! Walkable for all ages, enjoy canopies of trees, wooden stairs with handrails and informative signs along the way. Then you reach the top and it should take your breath away! So worth it! Various wood deck platforms, facing different directions provide safe viewing and unforgettable vistas! Trust me, it’s special.

Short, easy hike (if you are good with stairs) to a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding area! We went just as the rain had stopped and caught the fog rolling in off the water- super neat.

Beautiful views from the top of the mountain. Be sure to pack a good amount of water. They have an easier path and a more challenging path up and down the mountain. The easier path is less steep but also takes much longer to climb. If you take the more difficult path be sure to watch your step. Either way, it's a fun hike up, and you're sure to have a good time.

The Museum of Ojibwa Culture at Old Mission Saint-Ignace is a seasonal city museum located in a 19th-century mission church near Lake Huron. It offers visitors an immersive experience into the history and culture of the Ojibwa, Huron, and other tribes who inhabited the region. The museum features a replica of a Huron longhouse, exhibits, videos, sculpture gardens, and unique craft items for sale.
Google is inaccurately stating that this is closed. It is not. They even have big signs that say "Open" outside of the museum. This is a nice, small museum. It has a lot of information packed inside. There's a gift shop with great items. My kids liked the little kids' coloring area. The people working there are friendly.
Melissa D — Google review
Stopping in to check this out was a smart decision! There is no charge to walk the grounds and go through the building, but there is a donation box. I suggest dropping a couple of $20's in the box. Supporting any museum is a good cause in my book. The gift shop area is full of locally handmade items such as dream catchers, knives, jewelry, etc. The ladies behind the counter were very friendly and helpful. The artistry and craftsmanship of the items for sale are amazing! It was well worth stopping by and spending some time here!
Michelle A — Google review
I can't say enough about how exceptional this cultural museum is. I was there for hours and could have stayed longer. The information and resources available are wonderful. The book shop selections are extensive. The outdoor gardens and sculpture park are great. I especially liked the medicine wheel garden. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well.

Excellent educational opportunity to learn about both the Ojibwa culture/history and some information about Father Maquette. The indoor exhibits way back need better lighting but the other displays and videos were very very good. The store across the street (on the lake shoreline) has some great views and is stuffed with tshirts and trinkets etc. including a large selection of moccasins.
Allen S — Google review
Excellent museum. Very clean, great displays, a lot of native history and friendly staff. No admission price but accept donations to keep the museum open.
Yvonne E — Google review
The Museum of Ojibwa Culture is both enlightening and somber. The museum is donation based, self-guided, has some videos to watch, and includes interesting artifacts. It is small but teaches quite a bit. The outside has informational plaques, buildings, metal artwork that explains traditions and several gardens. The first time I went, I wondered why I never learned about this in school. As an adult, I knew the information, but this museum told the story of the Ojibway people in a factual way that I had never heard before. It made me get curious and ask more questions. Later while co-teaching a 7th grade social studies class, we spent 3 days on all things “Indian”; Trail of Tears and the Indian Removal Act. I can see how I might not remember content from my own 7th grade social studies class. The self-guided aspect of the inside museum and the grounds allows for reflection. Each time I visit, I find something new to learn. This space is wheelchair accessible for the museum. The outside buildings and gardens are spread out without a path.
Renee B — Google review
A good look at what was taken and who was lifted after the genocide of MANY first Nation peoples. None of the atrocious things like cutting out the tongue of any speaking their native language - how many buried at this museum? Left with a heavy heart.

Interesting stop on the way to our destination. Cost of admission to the park was $8-11. The glass bottomed boat is a flat raft operated by pulling the boat across using rope and pulley system. $11 per car....neat to see the clear water. Be nice if the boat had instructions for time limit as it is manual power, so how long are we able to stay out over the hole before we have to return to dock?

The park features a diverse range of animals including badgers, cougars, river otters, porcupines, reindeer, Siberian tigers, African lions and more.

Interacting with the animals being able to feed some while you have beautiful birds wondering around with you. Some thing special.

Estivant Pines Wilderness Nature Sanctuary, located in Keweenaw County, Michigan, spans 570 acres and is home to one of the last remaining old-growth white pine forests in the Midwest. The sanctuary offers hiking trails ranging from 1 to 2.5 miles through the ancient forest, where hikers can marvel at white pines that are over 600 years old and reach heights of 130 to 150 feet.
Beautiful place for a forest walk almost as close to the end of the peninsula as you can get. We walked/meandered one loop while it was lightly raining and it took about 45 minutes. The trail is well groomed and marked. There are two loops and the centre path of the joined loops is the most accessible and easiest walking. Plenty of parking available but that could have been because of the weather.
Brandy S — Google review
Beautiful hike that was well worth the little drive from Copper Harbor. There are two trails so you can choose from different lengths. All were well marked with signage and had a variety of trees. We did all loops and it took about an hour total. Great wildlife too, as we saw a fox when we first arrived. There is a vault toilet that was well kept at the trailhead.

Awesome little stop! Hike is definitely accessible and family friendly. I do recommend doing the Cathedral loop with families, small children, or these needing an easier path. The trail on the left can have some steep spots.

Although a little sign said 'E Pines", I don't think we found the right trail! Someone needs to update Google maps or post accurate directions. We met several people on the deer trail we were following and they also commented about the location and difficulty finding it.

Awesome area with some huuuge pines. Not only are the pine trees big, but so are some of the birch trees. Well maintained trail and overall a great outdoor area and mission.
Benjamin G — Google review
For those who us who seek peace and refuge within nature, Estivant Pines offers that peace. In this wondrous place I found a specific location that was visibly alive yet which emitted no noise. I could only hear my heartbeat and just the faintest intermittent hum. This was truly the most peaceful place I have ever been in my life. Walking among these towering giants that have been presiding over these woods for hundreds of years was humbling. Encountering the rocky areas was very interesting, I instantly felt aware of these areas having local significance throughout history and could only imagine what had taken place there. Estivant Pines is best recommended after spending at least a day in the KP/UP and all of its moving water and noise. The contrast between the beautiful beaches and the silent forest with no noise to be heard at the right spot, is diabolical. This area was recommended by a friendly local from Calumet.

This was a fun, albeit not fancy, place to visit. The stairs up the lighthouse are small and it does get a bit tricky towards the top. Fear of heights or smaller spaces may make this rough for some. The house ‘museum’ is nicely kept and fun to walk around. The other ‘museum’ buildings are Dusty, very mildew smelling and a bit tough to stand. The gift shop is cute with some unique affordable items. The road leading to the lighthouse is dirt but it’s very easy to navigate. Worth your time.

Northern Sun Winery and Vineyards, located in Bark River, is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts exploring the natural beauty of the Central U.P. This picturesque estate offers a selection of thirteen wines made from carefully selected, 100% estate-grown grapes. The winery's beautiful vine gazebo provides a serene setting to overlook the vineyard while enjoying their nicely crafted wines. Visitors can also opt to sit inside the building and taste away.
What a beautiful location with an outside wine tasting area where you are surrounded by the vineyard. Melissa explained to us how they are an estate vineyard and all of their varieties are grown there. All the wines are made there as well. My husband and I tasted six or seven of the different wines before choosing to purchase quite a few bottles to take on our travels with us. Highly recommend this sweet vineyard. Also if you are familiar with the harvest host program, know that they are members of that as well.

The first time we went, we parked our car and were greeted by this big white dog. He started barking at us, and lead us right to the front door of the tasting room. Talk about service! They have a beautiful vine gazebo to sit and overlook the vineyard in, or sit inside the building and taste away. If you're in Escanaba, take a short trip outside town and check them out.

I rarely post reviews but I must for this one! I had the best experience at this winery, perhaps the best in all of Michigan so far. The wine is amazingly flavorful, the atmosphere is welcoming and cozy, and they have the friendliest dog outside! Highly recommend for any wine lover. Even bought 3 bottles all for myself to enjoy later!

Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours in Munising provides a unique experience for visitors to explore the shipwrecks of Lake Superior. With three cruise options, guests can witness historic shipwrecks like the Herman H. Hettler and the East Channel Lighthouse while admiring the sights of Grand Island. The 2-hour tour offers a glimpse into American shipping history, showcasing a fully intact wooden sailing ship from before the Civil War and two different shipwreck sites.
Wonderful tour! An absolute MUST SEE/DO when you are in the area! Captain and crew are very knowledgeable, funny and give great info throughout the whole tour! It's incredible how close to the shipwrecks they are taking you. This was my second time going on this tour to show my kids. And I was just as amazed!

Very friendly staff, amazing view of a shipwreck, gorgeous scenery & wildlife. Our tour was cut in 1/2 due to windy conditions but we still felt like we saw all the stuff we were hoping to see and the tour company refunded us 1/2 the ticket price which I thought was amazing! Definitely recommend.

It's a two hour boat trip and we got to see three shipwrecks, though I went on this when I was younger and saw more. I do believe it just depends on what shipwrecks are available due to lake superior changing, or something like that. There were a few things you got to see other then the ship wrecks and that was the caves and coves, a gravel mine outcove, a pair of eagles in their nest, and a few lighthouses. The caption, she was very informative. Spoke a lot about the Grand Island and the area around (their history), spoke of other ship wrecks, and how some light houses work. Its a family run business and the entire crew is great, super friendly! They are very informative and funny. If you have questions you can ask, some other people did. Not me-social anxiety ✌️ If you think you might get sea sick this might not be the best for you considering you have to look down in these compartments to see the shipwrecks and sea sick + looking down is a no go. They probably dont want to clean up your lunch off the viewing glass. There are two levels, the upper level that is uncovered and the lower level, cocered, where the compartments are. Both are nice and clean. Snacks and drinks are available for a price, nothing is free these days folks. Except the bathrooms. Those were clean and free. :) I'd probably go again in a few years so i do recommend it!

My boyfriend and I took my son on a tour for his birthday! The day was literally perfect!! It was so nice out.. we loved the captain and narrator. Some pics we took and scout got 😂

This was the best! A lot of seating, snacks and sodas for purchase on the boat. The skipper was skilled and got us great views over the wrecks. Viewing was organized as each level took turns! Imagine that! Lol ~ there were also beautiful views of some of the lesser pictured rocks and knowledgeable narration. Dress in layers!!!

Fun Experience on the Glass Bottom Shipwreck tour. The tour was not just any regular Boat tour, the tour guides are very interactive and hilarious with providing information to customers. I highly recommend going on. Especially when there is a little windy weather that makes the experience of the boat ride fun.
Jeremiah V — Google review
My husband and I went on the tour in late September. During the tour you stop at two shipwrecks; the first of which is the intact Bermuda. The glass bottom boat was about 6 ft above the tallest point on the Bermuda so you get up close and personal. Captain Kate gave us a smooth ride and we got a detailed back story of each of the sites. In addition to the wrecks, they took us close to Grand Island to look at the scenery, waterfalls, and some bald eagles.

A Must-Do in Munising! The Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tour was hands down one of the highlights of our trip to the Upper Peninsula! From start to finish, the experience was both fascinating and beautifully executed. The crew was knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about sharing the maritime history of Lake Superior. We got an up-close view of two incredible shipwrecks, both resting peacefully beneath the crystal-clear water. The first was a wooden schooner still remarkably intact—you could clearly see the deck, ribs, and even parts of the mast through the glass viewing wells. The second wreck was larger and even more dramatic, with twisted metal and wooden beams sprawled across the lakebed. The clarity of the water made it feel like we were floating right above history. One of the unexpected highlights was cruising past the abandoned East Channel Lighthouse on Grand Island. It looked like something straight out of a movie—rustic, weathered, and perched hauntingly on the shoreline. The guide shared stories about its history and the role it played in guiding ships through these treacherous waters. It added so much atmosphere to the trip. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a cool, unique way to experience Lake Superior, this tour is 100% worth it. Great for families, couples, or solo travelers.

Arch Rock is a stunning natural limestone formation located in an island state park, offering breathtaking views of the Straits of Mackinac. Visitors can access this picturesque arch by hiking or biking along scenic trails that wind through the park's lush forests and along the beautiful shoreline. The island also offers opportunities for horseback riding and exploring other notable landmarks such as Sugar Loaf and Fort Holmes, providing a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and natural beauty.
You can walk the entire perimeter of Mackinac Island—it’s a scenic 8-mile loop. This car-free route offers stunning views of Lake Huron, the Mackinac Bridge, and the island’s historic sites. The trail is mostly flat and paved, making it accessible for walkers of all levels. Definitely grab bug spray if you’re walking around Mackinac Island—especially during spring and summer! The island’s lush forests and proximity to water mean mosquitoes and biting insects can be pretty active in the warmer months. A good bug spray will keep you comfortable and let you fully enjoy the trails and scenic walks without pesky bites.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 — A Must-See Natural Wonder on Mackinac Island Arch Rock is one of the most iconic and breathtaking sights on Mackinac Island. This massive natural limestone arch rises about 150 feet above Lake Huron, offering absolutely stunning views of the shoreline, water, and surrounding forest. The formation itself is incredible — shaped naturally over thousands of years — and it's hard not to be amazed by its size and how perfectly it's framed by the scenery. It’s especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light filters through the trees and the water glows beneath. You can reach it easily by bike, horse-drawn carriage, or a scenic hike. The viewing platform is well-maintained and provides spectacular photo opportunities. There's also historical signage explaining the geology and Native American legends connected to the site. Whether you’re into nature, photography, or just taking in amazing views, Arch Rock is an absolute must-visit. It’s one of the highlights of Mackinac Island — beautiful, peaceful, and unforgettable.

This view was absolutely stunning!!! A must see! I've wanted to see this for years & it didn't disappoint. Restrooms available nearby. You can climb steps to a higher point but this view is from the carriage ride tour around the island where we got off for pictures & to take in the scenery of the vask landscape. Beautiful!! Cost nothing to view arc rock as you can take a long walk there for free or rent a bicycle, horse taxi or the horse carriage.
Dayna K — Google review
The views of the rock formations and water are absolutely breathtaking. Fall is a perfect season to visit this place. I explored the island on a bike I rented right at the ferry port. To reach Arch Rock, I parked my bike and climbed about 200 steps to the top—it was well worth it!
Tarun P — Google review
Arch rock is so awesome, definitely make sure you see it if you are on Mackinac! The arch itself is so pretty, and there’s an overlook that is a tiny bit t higher up above the arch that’s perfect for pictures! Do the staircase up if you can, it’s about 10 minutes (if that) up a steep stair case but the views through the trees are so pretty, plus there’s a good amount of chipmunks on the way!
Enid C — Google review
The Arch rock is one of a kind experience. Never gets old. I loved it the same way I saw for the first time 20 years ago. Can be enjoyed by all the ages alike.

Gorgeous view of the rock and overlooking the lake. We hiked to the spot but it seems very easily accessible on both bike and by horse carriage. There is a nature center with water fountain and bathrooms as well! We went on a weekday. Although there were plenty of other visitors, it was overly packed or stuffy. There’s an area to see the rock in the background, and some stairs that lead you to a platform that overlooks the lake. Bring 2 quarters to use the binoculars if you wish! Definitely worth checking out!

The Museum Ship Valley Camp offers a unique experience to explore the life of a Great Lakes freighter in the early 20th century. The ship features over 100 exhibits, including an Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial with original lifeboats. Visitors can also explore crew quarters and view aquariums with large tanks. The preserved ship now serves as a museum and aquarium, offering an educational experience for all ages. With its rich history and extensive exhibits, the Valley Camp provides insight into maritime life on the Great Lakes.
The museum is packed with historical displays, and the ship itself is also very impressive and was a great opportunity to tour it. We were very limited on time, and wished we could have stayed longer. If you really want to see all there is to see on the ship, you probably need to plan to be there for around 3 hours. It looked like there was a guided tour option too as we saw a large group with a tour guide. We had a great time rushing around the ship trying to see as much of it as we could in the time we had!! I would go back another time.
Larissa G — Google review
cool experience, wish you could explore more of the ship. as someone with curiosity about so many things would love to see more of the engine room. also would be nice if there was guides to answer questions etc. all in all a cool experience though lot s of great artifacts, such as the edmund fitzgerald life boats.
Jacob M — Google review
What’s not to like about a museum in a ship. It’s loaded with displays, and historical artifacts, including life boats from the Edmond Fitzgerald. You can walk top side and see all the crew quarters and the helm. The Valley Camp’s length is 550 feet. Some freighters are 1000 ft today. Check out the very bottom to see the floor that warped from all the tons of cargo it carried. The museum has a lot of information about Great Lakes ships.
Rebel C — Google review
This was a fun visit for the whole family and it had ramps to most places for folks who can't do stairs. Loaded with history of shipping and the coast guard around the great lakes while at the same time touring an actual barge!
Sheila Y — Google review
I was in awe to be able to walk through an entire ship on all three levels. There is a large collection of maritime artifacts! My favorite was a lifeboat from the Edmund Fitzgerald. It gives you an eerie and somber feeling to not only touch the boat, but to see the metal of the lifeboat torn from the rough storm that claimed the ship and crew. The top deck is a bit scary if you are afraid of heights, but it is worth braving. The crew quarters are located up there and it was very interesting to see how and where a crewmen lives while aboard the ship.

We got the adventure pass which is the tour of the ship, the tower, and boat tour. Let me tell you. You need to carve out a day to do this. I am from port huron and we live in iron mountain area. We have never been to the Su so it was both our first time. Growing up on the lake you would see the Ore boats and wonder what it was like to be inside. This gave us the opportunity to see. It took about 2 hours to explore fully and the great thing is if you want to you could go as many times as you wanted that day as it is a day pass into the ship. Not only do you get to see artifacts, paintings, and the ship in person but you get to explore on your own terms and pace. Every room and space is utilized with exhibits and staff was friendly. Everyone was respectful in not touching anything. Some areas have leaks so puddles can be seen. They repaired the very top so it is slippery when walking on but it was worth it. To be that high up and to see the captains quarters. The entire experience was really cool. At times it was a little hard to breathe for me because I have asthma but let me tell you it was worth it. Wonderful experience.

Lighthouses
Crisp Point Lighthouse, located in Paradise, Michigan, is a remote early-1900s lighthouse offering panoramic views of Lake Superior from the top. Accessible via an 18-mile drive over dirt roads, it's a hidden gem in the popular vacation destination of the Upper Peninsula. The well-maintained lighthouse features a gift shop and bathrooms and offers visitors the opportunity to explore boardwalks and beachfront.
This is our favorite lighthouse! Getting to Crisp Point Lighthouse is more than half the fun! We've noticed the road continues to be improved over the 14 or 15 years we've visited. The volunteers maintain the property surrounding the lighthouse beautifully. Be prepared to take out any trash with you. Pack a snack or lunch (concessions might me limited to only water) and enjoy it on the handful of picnic tables. There's plenty of information about the history of the lighthouse and the efforts to save and restore it. You can climb and up and look out of the lighthouse most days, appreciating the view few have seen. Enjoy the miles of sandy and smooth stone beaches for miles along the more clear water. When we were there last, dozens of people and families were there enjoying the beach, lake, and rock collecting. Be sure to grab "I survived the trip to Crisp Point Lighthouse" swag, as all proceeds and donations support the nonprofit responsible for caring for this majestic lighthouse.
Adam C — Google review
The view from the top of the lighthouse is AMAZING. That said, the drive to get there is kind of tedious. Good rockpicking! It was cool and blustery when we visited but still very nice. Very secluded though. Have plenty of gas in your car. The way is pretty clearly marked, though.
Erin F — Google review
It's a heck of a drive to get there...18 miles took over an hour to travel. Suggest having AWD or 4X4. But if you can stomach the road, the beach and lighthouse are so worth it. You can even go up into the lighthouse and climb to the top for spectacular views.
Amanda M — Google review
Awesome, the road was in very good condition. The family working at the gift shop wad very helpful. Such a nice thing, hopefully they enjoyed the experience. The lighthouse and beach and walking paths were a 12 out of 10, Rain held off for us too. We were there on Saturday, July 19th... enjoy!
Lisa S — Google review
This place is absolutely amazing and magical if you can handle the drive in and out. We were not expecting such a quaint and secluded area after miles of driving on remote dirt roads. The views and beach are unbelievable and unlike the others in the area! You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for great views. The beach goes on forever and very walkable. I suggest wearing sandals on the lakeshore to protect your feet from the rocks and so your shoes don’t get wet. The boardwalk trail is friendly for people with mobility issues.
Maria S — Google review
Fantastic lighthouse. The drive back is pretty rough but able to be done in most cars as long as you have patience and take it slow. Lighthouse is free to visit and climb, please buy something at the gift shop or make a donation to help keep this beautiful spot alive. Nice beach as well.

Loved the drive to Crisp point lighthouse. The 7 mile dirt road was unexpected but lots of fun. Any vehicle can make the drive just take it slow. Enjoy a peaceful walk on the beautiful beach. Climb the lighthouse and don't forget to visit the small gift shop. The caretakers are volunteers . They are welcoming and wonderful to chat with.

Was an adventure to get to but well worth the drive and the staff that help maintain the store and lighthouse grounds are awesome. Would definitely say if your planning on taking the drive make sure you got the right vehicle to get there I recommend awd or fwd vehicles as the terrain is a bit dicy at times. But I had a great time navigating the trail there and the lighthouse looks amazing in person.

Iron Mountain Iron Mine offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of iron mining in the Upper Peninsula. Operating from 1870 to 1945, this site allows visitors to explore the techniques and tools used during that era. The tour begins with a small train ride into the mine, followed by a hike through narrow passages with low ceilings. Despite the chilly and damp conditions, visitors are provided with jackets and hard hats for safety. One of the highlights is a huge cavern within the mine.
What an unbelievably fun tour. From the picture opportunities out front, to the gift shop that offers plenty to do while waiting for the next trip, to the jewel of the attraction, the mine tour itself, this is a must see. Our tour was incredibly enhanced by the very knowledgeable tour guide, Chris. Such a fun and educational experience that our kids will remember for the rest of their lives.
Tom D — Google review
Absolutely loved the mine tour. The train to get into the mine is such a unique experience from other cave tours. A lot of history and our tour guide had great knowledge. Loved the view of the tracks from the seat in the very back. It is a bit fast paced, but they are fairly accommodating. A sweater helps as it does get chilly in the mine. Gift shop had a plethora of options and there were great picture opportunities out front. I went with my husband and my 3 year old and 7 month old. My only complaint was that there were a few semi loud machines and whistle in the beginning. I love that we got to see them in action; however, I wish we would have had a heads up so we could move my kiddos away from the machines and cover their ears for the whistle, specifically the 7 month old. They weren’t overly loud, the baby got over it quickly, just would have appreciated a heads up since we didn’t know what to expect. So if you have littles, heads up for you. Otherwise, absolutely loved it and will hopefully be able to visit again.

This is one of the best mine tours I’ve been on and I’ve been on a handful of them. I had a great conversation with the ladies in the store and they were so nice! My fiancé and I were fortunate enough to go at just the right time and we got a private tour and it was amazing. Our tour guide did a great job at explaining things!

Great experience. It's wild the temperature change once your in the mine then coming back out. The tour guide is very impressive wit his knowledge and able to capture you're attention. It's a beautiful thing to see. The gift shop has so many interesting things to look at I'd definitely consider going again.

My mom has wanted to visit for years, and we finally made it — so glad we did! The tour was fast-paced and full of fascinating info about the mine’s history and the people who worked there. Our guide was a young woman who was incredibly sweet and patient, which made the experience even better. It’s not the easiest for those with mobility issues — my mom uses a cane and was determined to do it. She made it through and absolutely loved the tour. She was so happy she finally got to experience it! Definitely bring a sweater — it’s cold as all get out down there. The gift shop was also great, with a surprisingly good selection of crystals at excellent prices. A memorable and meaningful stop!

I Went on the Mine tour at the same time as a group of geology students which made it a little extra educational. The tour guide was great, spoke very clear and projected his voice well so the whole group could hear. The tour went down into the mine by track car and you get to get out at the end of the track to see a couple different areas. Overall it was a great tour with lots of history about the Upper peninsula. Tour cost is 20$ per adult, free for 5 and under

A new family favorite! So happy I found this on a whim while looking for things to do in Iron Mountain. Our guide was amazing and I'm sad I can't remember her name. We decided to go on a hot day, so the 42° underground temp was welcomed. I wish the shop had more souvenir-type things of the area, but I get the whole rock (mining) thing. Highly recommend this place. The people working there were very friendly and chatty.
