Bodies of Water
Tahquamenon Falls, located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is a must-see natural wonder. It consists of two powerful waterfalls - the Upper and Lower falls - known for their unusual brown tinge due to cedar tannins in the water. The falls are situated in Tahquamenon Falls State Park, the second largest park in Michigan.
Beautiful day here ! Beware of the shuttle - it’s literally a minivan and fits six people today. So just an fyi if your trying to shuttle one way and there are already people waiting for it. No one mentioned this to us . Otherwise had a perfect day ! Lunch at brewery was delicious !

There are alot of stairs!!! Elderly and handicapped, please be fore warned. You either need a parks permit or purchase a day pass. I believe it was $11 per vehicle and was good for as many parks as you chose to visit, that day! Great views. But 1 section was closed for maintenance when we went. But was still very enjoyable and a workout all in one. And I even appreciated and applauded the effort put in to build the whole walk way setup. That would not be an east task! I believe it's also referred to as root beer falls because of the color of the water due to the minerals being leeched into the water from the trees.
Here G — Google review
Love it.. it's quite beautiful. Big change stair to the platform to the falls is closer so, you can't get that close. But, can't wait for the construction to be done for the new 1
Shantae B — Google review
The Park Service is currently building a wheelchair accessible platform at the base of the falls. I can't wait for it to be finished!
John H — Google review
Beautiful tannin stained waterfall in Eastern UP. Easily accessible. Upper Falls and Lower Falls each have their own entrance off of 123, or you can hike the 5 miles one way and make a day of it. Each park has food, a gift shop and bathrooms; state park pass required and can be purchased at the gate. The lower falls allow you to get up close to explore, which is good and bad bc many social trails have developed on the island due to increased traffic. Definitely bring the bug spray or wear long sleeves/pants for the mosquitoes. Highly recommend a stop to explore these falls!
Angela W — Google review
So beautiful! The trials were easy to walk and the area was very clean. The gift shop was super cute as well
Chanel Y — Google review
My favorite place in the UP!!! All of these falls are so breathtaking and beautiful!! I love that they built the new bridge to cross at the lower falls!

Short walk from the parking lot definitely worth it. Very nice and glad we went. Bring bug spray

State park
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Michigan's largest state park, is a haven for nature enthusiasts seeking vast wilderness and remote lakes. The park offers opportunities to spot black bears and provides a sense of solitude in the backcountry. Divided into three main scenic areas, visitors can explore Lake of the Clouds with its stunning overlook and hike along the Escarpment Trail.
It's one of the most beautiful parks! There's so much to do & see, with lots of places to camp. I advise you to go to their website and reserve your spot as far in advance as possible because they fill up fast!
Don A — Google review
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is definitely one of the best state parks I have visited in the United States. The section I visited contained four different waterfalls that were all amazing sights to see. The suspension bridge over the most northern waterfall is wonderful. The river opens up to Lake Superior and makes for beautiful views and amazing hikes.
B A — Google review
Incredible hiking with Lake of the Clouds being the obvious highlight, I recommend parking at the small government peak parking “lot” by the main park entrance and doing the 2ish miles (mostly uphill) to the peak, best views/pics from that side, over driving to the touristy photo spot. Highly recommend going here in general, regardless of whatever trail you choose, it’s a gorgeous area, Pure Michigan!!

Our trip to the Porkies was planned for September 21st, 2025, for a 5-day 31 MI backpacking loop. We made Backcountry camping site reservations online ($20 per night for a site for up to 6), which took a little getting used to, but was pretty easy. Check in on a Sunday morning at the visitor center was very a good experience, a beautiful Visitor Center and a smooth process to turn a reservations into permits. We started out along m107 at the Government Peak Trailhead and walked the Escarpment Trail, a little of the Lake Superior Trail, Little Carp, river Trail, North Mirror Lake Trail, and the Government Peak trail. towards Lake of the clouds. There were several beautiful overlooks of the Lake of the clouds area where we could see the tips of the trees starting to change color and it was beautiful. The trails we chose took us along rivers with waterfalls, Lake superior, Lake of the clouds, and Mirror Lake Trails were well marked and easy to follow. There are plenty of steep up and downs, but we found those we're tiring but not that. There are large sections of Muddy marshy area so be ready, and River Crossings, so be ready to get your feet wet. Based on what we saw, the park is well kept. There are many more trails to explore, and the area around Lake Superior is quite beautiful. I highly recommended. Actually, I probably shouldn't be telling you all of this! If the park becomes more popular, reservations may be harder to get:-) do check out the website, because they do have cabins near the road and near the lake available for rent as well as cabins and Yurts in the backcountry. There are several places for swimming access to Lake Superior. Good luck and enjoy.
Keith B — Google review
One of the most beautiful state parks I’ve ever been to in my home state of Michigan! The lady at the visitor center was so friendly and so knowledgeable, she guided us to areas that would have the best view for us , as we weren’t walking any of the trails. We spent the entire day seeing Lake of the Clouds, several waterfalls and enjoying the beauty of all the color in the state park ! We were able to stop multiple times and walk along Lake Superior and find some stones as well ! It was truly an amazing day spent here !
Michelle L — Google review
Absolutely beautiful! Seeing the sunrise and sunset on Superior is breathtaking. The stars are so clear and beautiful. This is a must see on the bucket list!
Vickie W — Google review
Roads well maintained and staff was friendly. Camped out one night on the Big Carp Trail and it was easy to obtain a permit. Lake of the Clouds was worth a visit and easy to access with a ramp and couple steps.
Missy M — Google review
We hiked the Presque Isle River trail on the western side of the Park. There is a good boardwalk on the western side of the river with viewing platforms at each of the waterfalls. It is worth the drive there and I would highly recommend it.

Island
Mackinac Island, located in Lake Huron's Straits of Mackinac, is a popular vacation destination known for its rich history and picturesque surroundings. The island, which prohibits most vehicles, offers visitors a unique experience with its stunning arch rock formations and world-famous fudge shops. With a deep historical significance to the Anishinaabe people, the island was once an important spot for fishing and gatherings.
What a great place to visit, lots of beautiful things to see. No cars allowed, the only way around the island is by foot, bicycle or horse. Over 80% of the island is state park. Of course, the main street by the ferry dock is crammed with stores selling souvenirs and such.
Gerry O — Google review
Mackinac Island is definitely a beautiful and unique place with its charming streets, horse carriages, and scenic views. It’s worth experiencing at least once. That being said, it can get very crowded, which makes it less enjoyable for people like me who prefer quieter spots. Also, visiting on a hot sunny day can be overwhelming. Overall, I’d say it’s a great one-time visit, but not somewhere I’d return often.
Aishwarya R — Google review
What a romantic little island. We took a carriage ride around the island and every place we stopped was picture perfect. I felt like I was in a different country.
Adriana — Google review
This really is a town out of time. I recommend a tour of the fort and the cherry cobbler at the tea room. Book a carriage ride around the island and enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants.
Bill P — Google review
We love visiting Mackinac Island. Great restaurants, fudge & Ice cream. Love our walks around the Island, lots to see. Definitely worth the visit. Will come again.
Rosie H — Google review
What a great escape nice that no cars allowed on the island ,tons of bikes to rent or bring your own we took the horse & buggy ride around part of the island. Lots of shopping, but the fudge is another story we stayed at the KOA in Mackinaw City. Nice clean park differently going back hopefully the next year or 2 . You won't be disappointed
Keith C — Google review
Gorgeous island set back in time where motorized vehicles arent allowed. We highly recommend the horse carriage ride around the island where you can get off & back on at destinations. You can also walk, bike, take a personalized carriage ride/tour, drive your own carriage or motorized scooters. The Secret Garden is a must see!! Sit in a rocking chair on the porch of the Grand Hotel and enjoy the stunning views! Eat at the Chuck Wagon. (Limited seating) Visit Fort Mackinac during one of the event times, cannon firing or artillery) Enjoy views & Lake Breeze. Butterfly House! Forge/Blacksmith. Fudge!
Dayna K — Google review
Mackinac Island is like stepping back in time, with no cars and plenty of charm. From biking around the scenic views to indulging in famous fudge, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway. The island’s natural beauty and history make it unforgettable.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park, located in Paradise, is a popular destination known for its stunning waterfalls, woodland hikes, and year-round activities. The park features the impressive Upper Falls, one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, plunging 50 feet into the Tahquamenon River. Additionally, visitors can explore the picturesque Lower Falls with its smaller yet equally beautiful cascades.
My friend and I hiked both the upper and lower falls. We went to the different parking lots and didn’t walk from one to the other. (Although we found out there is a shuttle so you can hike the 4 miles and get a ride back.) The boardwalks are nice and allow for a safe stroll. The steps to the bottom are also safe and sturdy. The falls are impressive and it was a nice excursion. And it wasn’t crowded which was nice.
Megan M — Google review
This was our first trip in the UP and we heard and read so many great things about this park and it lived up to the hype. This is a beautifully maintained park. The pathways are free of debris and easy to walk. This is coming from two people who didn't think they'd be able to walk the whole Lower Falls, let alone the Upper Falls too. The Lower Falls is about a 2-mile walk in total. The Upper Falls felt a little less than that. We had a gorgeous day to walk these paths. I would recommend getting to either one of these fairly early as parking fills up. The lower falls seems to have more parking than the upper but once you get there, you'll be glad you went, especially if you love nature.
Erik L — Google review
A beautifully relaxing space in nature. The state has done a phenomenal job of blending human access and convenience with nature. Easy access wooden walkways to the falls. Great spots to overlook the falls, rent and launch kayaks, or access swim spots on the river. The visitor center has lots of great shopping and snacks that help support the park. We are so glad we decided to veer off our original mapped road trip to add this park as a stop. Well worth the extra mileage and time. Plan on spending at least an hour if not more.
Tanya T — Google review
Worth the trip, but be prepared to do a little walking. I believe the lower falls are better than the upper falls. Lower falls have a 3/4 + mile walking path with several observation points for photos and viewing the falls. Upper falls have some observation points but some are under construction and are closed. Plenty of parking, restrooms available and a gift shops with some food options. There is a cost to enter the park unless you have the annual pass. Expect some delays as they are paving the roads in the area. Also ensure you have plenty of fuel in your vehicle, limited number of gas stations in the area and gas is 35 to 50 cents higher then national average.
David I — Google review
Beautiful park. The areas near the falls are easy to get to. The top falls has 181 steps down and back up if you want to view it from the Gorge, so be aware. We hiked the 4.5 miles from the bottom to the top falls. There are a lot of ups and downs, roots, soggy areas. If you are out of shape, I would avoid it and drive from the bottom falls to the top after visiting each. If you can hike it, it is beautiful. Round trip was 11 miles of walking. Be sure to plan for the 2.5 hours each way. I wouldn't want to do it in the dark. There is a private shuttle that can take you from one parking lot to the other, $ 20.00 for first person and $5.00 for others in your group. They have limited availability do read the signs and contact them. Gift shops are at the top and bottom falls.
Seth A — Google review
The upper falls were amazing and easy to reach a good view point even in a wheel chair. In the photos and videos you can not really tell how large and powerful the falls really are. There are steps to the gorge view, which will give you a wider view of the falls, however this view is farther from the falls. With it 181 steps to reach the gorge, if you decide not to tackle the steps you will not really miss anything. There is also a 4 mile path between the falls if you are up for a hike.
Debra C — Google review
Awesome scenery! Short and easy walk to the waterfalls. Handicap friendly. They have food, beer, ice cream, restrooms, and a few shops. Something for everyone. I'm glad we made the 2.5 drive from Escanaba. It was a little busy when we went with the fall colors. You won't be disappointed.
Craig K — Google review
Went with my disabled 20 year old son and my teenage daughter. We went on a Tuesday and it was amazing! They could have used more van disabled spots (we have a side lift) but luckily did find a spot without issue. We were able to walk all around the lower falls and around the little island even though it was not paved. Absolutely impressed with how our day trip went! Highly recommend. They even had family bathrooms (an adult changing cable would have been super convenient)!

Estivant Pines Wilderness Nature Sanctuary, located in Keweenaw County, Michigan, spans 570 acres and is home to one of the last remaining old-growth white pine forests in the Midwest. The sanctuary offers hiking trails ranging from 1 to 2.5 miles through the ancient forest, where hikers can marvel at white pines that are over 600 years old and reach heights of 130 to 150 feet.
Beautiful place for a forest walk almost as close to the end of the peninsula as you can get. We walked/meandered one loop while it was lightly raining and it took about 45 minutes. The trail is well groomed and marked. There are two loops and the centre path of the joined loops is the most accessible and easiest walking. Plenty of parking available but that could have been because of the weather.
Brandy S — Google review
Beautiful hike that was well worth the little drive from Copper Harbor. There are two trails so you can choose from different lengths. All were well marked with signage and had a variety of trees. We did all loops and it took about an hour total. Great wildlife too, as we saw a fox when we first arrived. There is a vault toilet that was well kept at the trailhead.
Abbey M — Google review
Awesome little stop! Hike is definitely accessible and family friendly. I do recommend doing the Cathedral loop with families, small children, or these needing an easier path. The trail on the left can have some steep spots.
Paige E — Google review
Although a little sign said 'E Pines", I don't think we found the right trail! Someone needs to update Google maps or post accurate directions. We met several people on the deer trail we were following and they also commented about the location and difficulty finding it.
BL — Google review
Great hiking, trail a little rough due to trees down, but totally dueable. About 2 miles.
Tammy L — Google review
Great little trail, not far from Copper Harbor. The dirt roads to get there are a bit bumpy but worth it
S M — Google review
Awesome area with some huuuge pines. Not only are the pine trees big, but so are some of the birch trees. Well maintained trail and overall a great outdoor area and mission.
Benjamin G — Google review
For those who us who seek peace and refuge within nature, Estivant Pines offers that peace. In this wondrous place I found a specific location that was visibly alive yet which emitted no noise. I could only hear my heartbeat and just the faintest intermittent hum. This was truly the most peaceful place I have ever been in my life. Walking among these towering giants that have been presiding over these woods for hundreds of years was humbling. Encountering the rocky areas was very interesting, I instantly felt aware of these areas having local significance throughout history and could only imagine what had taken place there. Estivant Pines is best recommended after spending at least a day in the KP/UP and all of its moving water and noise. The contrast between the beautiful beaches and the silent forest with no noise to be heard at the right spot, is diabolical. This area was recommended by a friendly local from Calumet.

Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan is a 323-acre peninsula that extends into Lake Superior. It's a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering wooded trails, lakeside cliffs, picnic facilities, and a concert bandshell. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, swimming, picnicking, and nature observation. The park also features the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse and provides opportunities to watch freighters heading to the ore docks.
We visited on a very rainy, cold day but despite the weather, it was still a stunning place. Everything is well kept with restrooms and picnic areas throughout. The many trails throughout the park lead to great views. We stayed about an hour and a half, but you could easily spend a half day here if you did more trails and overlooks.

AMAZING VIEWS!!! We live by Lake Michigan and although it can be choppy and the waves are pretty rough, it does not compare to the power of Lake Superior! But the VIEWS are what is so awesome! Wonderful walking path to view all this beauty! If you go out to see the Black Rocks, BE SURE to wear appropriate shoes!!! Very rough terrain to reach them, but worth it if you are physically able. I would definitely come back here when in the area:)
Kathy T — Google review
Absolutely spectacular! We always have our furbabies with us so we don’t stay for long but each time we come we discover something new and magical. Visitors beware there are certain hours the road is closed to vehicles to allow for bike and foot traffic, also that dogs are not allowed outside of the vehicle. An absolute joy to visit!
Elizabeth P — Google review
Beautiful! For those not from the area, its located in Marquette which is a very cute town. Its the perfect mix of trails and downtown. The trails are very easy, not intense so good for beginner hikers. Beautiful views of the lake and the black rocks are very cool!
Rachael H — Google review
Beautiful views of the lake and black rocks. A good mix of more fun and challenging hiking paths, as well as easier and serene ones through the woods. You can also drive through a one way that loops around the peninsula if you wish or walk along the road for a more direct path to the black rocks on foot. If you take some of the harder trails, be careful particularly on the side of some of the hills. Some are quite steep on the side of the path.
Ben — Google review
Stopped in over the Labor Day Weekend, my wife wanted to check out the Black Rocks. I knew nothing about them until we walked out and saw a large number of people jumping off into the water. We were not suited to indulge at this time, but it looked to be fun. Also, walked the breakwall near the ore dock. This looks like a great place to spend summer time when in the area again.

Mountains
Sugarloaf Mountain, located in Marquette, offers breathtaking vistas of Lake Superior and other landmarks such as the Superior Dome, Upper Ore Dock, Wetmore Landing, Little Presque Isle, and Hogsback Mountain. The hike to the top is relatively quick and easy with two trail options: an easier route around the mountain and a more challenging trail involving rock scrambling. The peak stands at approximately 1000 feet above sea level and features three observation platforms for soaking in the panoramic views.
Aside from the stairways there are other ways you can take from the parking lot to climb up if you wanted to go a different route or find a place for bouldering. It’s a beautiful little mountain with a pretty view🌄
Sereta F — Google review
I’m in love with this place! This is a 30min hike one way. I have done it 3 times. It has iconic views, the hike is totally worth it! This last time I went for the sunrise. The photos don’t do justice. For a good sunrise, be there 30 minutes before sunrise! They have two ways to go, easy and hard ( hard way is shorter) just follow the hike path and signs. Doable for kids ( I would say 7 yrs and up) it does require to climb a bit of stairs.
Patricia D — Google review
Such a great day! Easy to find, excellent free parking and pit toilet available. Choices on how strenuous you want to be on your way to the top. Gorgeous hike awaits! Walkable for all ages, enjoy canopies of trees, wooden stairs with handrails and informative signs along the way. Then you reach the top and it should take your breath away! So worth it! Various wood deck platforms, facing different directions provide safe viewing and unforgettable vistas! Trust me, it’s special.
Lynnann M — Google review
Short, easy hike (if you are good with stairs) to a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding area! We went just as the rain had stopped and caught the fog rolling in off the water- super neat.
Sarah J — Google review
Beautiful views from the top of the mountain. Be sure to pack a good amount of water. They have an easier path and a more challenging path up and down the mountain. The easier path is less steep but also takes much longer to climb. If you take the more difficult path be sure to watch your step. Either way, it's a fun hike up, and you're sure to have a good time.
Ben — Google review
A must stop if you can climb stairs. Fantastic views in every direction. Great place to view God's beautiful creation! I could have stayed there looking for hours.
Steve A — Google review
This is such an incredible experience! The view is just beautiful when you make it to the top. Its well worth the 300 step you have to walk to get up there, just take your time, you will not be disappointed!

Absolutely stunning views from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain! 🌅 The hike is short and easy, and the lookout deck offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Superior and the colorful fall trees. The sunset here was magical — peaceful, quiet, and worth every step. A perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature’s beauty. 🌲💛 Golden hour over Lake Superior 💛 10-17-25

The Eben Ice Caves, located in Eben Junction, offer a unique natural wonder in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The 2.3-mile round trip hike to the ice caves is best suited for those who enjoy snowshoeing and are prepared for intermediate level difficulty. Visitors can stay at a beautiful house overlooking the Au Train River while exploring this stunning winter attraction. During the winter months, visitors can traverse through the snow and explore the breathtaking ice formations within the caves.
Huge parking area with bathrooms. Ice spikes are a must. The 1 mile trail to the caves is beautiful. When you get closer there are hills up snd down. I also used hiking poles to help. What a site to see!
Christy Z — Google review
The ice caves are beautiful. We went in the morning. There weren't many people. Plenty of parking. It's about a mile hike to the cave. We were there for about an hour and it began to get crowded when we left. Make sure you have ice spikes or you'll struggle. There are hills you have to climb to get to the caves plus the ice at the caves.

Great winter hike, but WEAR ICE CLEATS. Mile hike from our parking spot to the ice cave. Last 100 ft were the trickiest steep and slippery. $5 parking "donation" as it's on private property as I understand. It was great fun

The hike itself is relatively easy, but during icy conditions, it can be slippery, so I highly recommend grabbing a pair of affordable ice cleats from Amazon or a local store—they make all the difference! Once you arrive, the caves are a breathtaking natural wonder, with sparkling icicles and frozen formations that make for incredible photos. It's a great spot for families, couples, or anyone looking to experience Michigan's winter beauty.

If your into outdoor winter adventures, this is a great spot. Moderate hike in , that could have a few slippery spots, micro spikes make the hike much easier. Here in jan and the caves still are forming, looking forward to coming again later in the season. Great parking area with restrooms. Thank you to the landowners and foundation for providing this for the public!

Be prepared for a challenging hike to caves. It is recommended to have cleats on. Worth the hike, beautiful cave formations. Highly recommended to stay on trail path. Visited on 12-29-2024.

Very interesting and beautiful! The hike back wasn't bad and very picturesque. We really enjoyed and would definitely visit again.

We love the ice caves! They're not "fully formed " yet, but still beautiful. With the new parking lot and bathrooms, it's even nicer to go there. For safety purposes, ice cleats are a must. So much natural beauty! The landowners are so generous to share this, I'm more than happy to donate a few dollars at the parking area.

Two Hearted River is an easy in-and-out trail that spans 2.8 miles and offers breathtaking views of one of Michigan's most iconic rivers. The trail leads to the mouth of the river, which served as inspiration for some of Hemingway's early writings. Nestled alongside Lake Superior's northern shoreline near Grand Marais, this picturesque location is perfect for camping, fishing, and rock hunting.
It is such a beautiful and peaceful place to camp. I have always had wonderful neighbors. Perfect place to fish, also a rock hunters dream! All rustic Two pit tolits No shower rooms Pets allowed (must be kept on leash) No playground

Incredible spot! We've been 2 years in a row. Pit toilets. Potable water. Dumpsters. THE BEST rock hounding evar! Hiking. Behind the farthest north east camp spot in the 2nd camp area is a trail up a hill. On top of this hill is a beautiful overlook with a bench. 10/10. DO NOT blindly follow Google maps out there as most of it is offroad trail. The main road is 30 miles of gravel so you have to use good judgement. Once you find your way there, that's the only road. Don't try to shortcut across 2 heart landing road to Crisp point light house unless you're 4WD and ready for action. You should go way back south and cut across a main road.

Waterfall
Nature & Parks
Nestled within the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Miners Falls is a must-visit for waterfall lovers. This breathtaking 60-foot cascade tumbles over a sandstone ledge, creating a mesmerizing sight that draws visitors year-round. The journey to the falls is made easy by a well-maintained gravel path that spans just 1.2 miles round trip, complete with wooden stairs leading down to an observation platform for an up-close view of the rushing water.
Beautiful, wooded walk through tall trees and a wide gravel path to the waterfall. Gushing waterfall when we visited with a nice, cool mist breeze. Easy-moderate hike, 1.2 miles (.6 miles to waterfall and then back to the parking area). A few hill step-downs at the start of the trail and about 50 steps to get to the lower viewing deck of the falls (which is best for viewing). There is an upper deck viewing area but the view of the entire waterfall is much more limited. Other than the 3-4 step downs at the start of the trail, it’s mostly handicap inclusive.

This is an amazing waterfall. About .6 miles to hike in. Nothing drastic. 72 steps at the end and you can walk down to the lower park. There is challenging terrain once at the bottom but you can get to the base of the falls. Beautiful and feels great!

.6 of a mile hike to miner falls but so beautiful. You’re able to go down into the falls as well.

A gorgeous waterfall with multiple viewpoints. 15 minutes from the parking lot to the falls or less. I visited on the last weekend of September around 1pm and it was pretty busy; the parking lot was full enough for cars to line the road coming up. Don’t let that deter you! Only about half of visitors or less ended up at the bottom of the falls due to the steep and rugged climb down, so I was able to get about 3 minutes uninterrupted with the falls for clear photos. The climb down involves a very steep rooted path over the rocks with a roughly 4’ wall of rock to scale when coming back up about midway (a foot step is carved in the stone but kids will definitely need help). There are two viewing platforms across from the top if you can’t make it down, but I saw a group of 7-10y/o kids and at the bottom with their parents.

Finally posting from August. Beautiful hike thru the woods. It does involve some stairs and inclines. My Apple Watch clocked it at 1.34 miles and 30minutes.

Amazing. The final 50ft descend to the waterfall is not paved. But there are ropes and roots that can be used as hand rails.

Park
Wilderness State Park in Michigan spans 10,000 acres and offers a variety of activities such as hiking trails, meadows, and shoreline access. The park is known for its dark sky preserves, providing excellent opportunities to view the Northern Lights without light pollution. Visitors can also enjoy camping at two campsites within the park. Hiking trails like the Nebo trail offer beautiful scenery and opportunities to observe wildlife such as mushrooms. The park provides a secluded and peaceful environment for outdoor enthusiasts to explore nature.
I enjoyed my stay in the Lakeshore section. It was a short walk from my campsite to the beach. During a nice bike ride, I saw the boat launch and picnic area. I was solo, but most were family campers. It felt safe and secure with staff doing regular roundabouts. Bathrooms were fine. The only downside were millions of dead fish flies in the water and shore line, but obviously that was out of our control. It was also a short drive to Mackinac City. Highly recommended!
Ashia G — Google review
There are a few hiking trails heads at the campground. My favorite was The Red Pine trail head. I've never seen so many beautiful mushrooms on a trail before. It is a true hiking trail with pine needles covering the single lane dirt path. Several board paths covered with shingles over the marshy areas. A bench to take a break about midway through. I believe bikes are allowed on all of the trails but not certain. There is a three lane dump station so our wait was short. They notified us that is was almost 10:00 while we were at out camp fire but only on Monday night. They just reminded us that quiet time was approaching. We drove to the boat launch and walked our dogs down the beach for a couple of miles. The sites are a good size with some backing up to other sites and some backing up to the woods. My site was pretty level. They have an updated playground, horseshoe court and a large open grassy field for kiddos or doggos to run around and play. They have beach wheelchairs at the beach area for public use. Check in is quick and easy. They have you wait in your vehicle and pull up and wait for your turn to go and check in.

This is a truely wonderful campground near the tip of Michigan's lower peninsula. Surrounded by views of Lake Michigan, close to the dark park and a section of the North Countey Trail. Very close to Mackinaw City and Mackinaw Island. I stayed at the group campground and it was perfect! The outhouse were very clean and well kept, there was a water pump available, and a nice sandy beach trail leading to a beautiful little beach area.

Pines campground is not as close to the water as the others but still nice and with pine trees. Easy walk to trails and the beach. Dog area on beach is kind of small but it's nice to be able to take dog to beach. Trail 3 is beautiful. Take bug spray.

This was our first time here site 309. The bathroom was a few sites away, so convenient for us. The bathroom looks to be updated. It was clean. We really appreciated the dish washing station that they had! We happened to be there when there were game force winds, cold and cloudy. We were hoping to be able to see stars but it just wasn't in the books. This area is also very convenient to many touristy areas. We ride motorcycles and were looking forward to coming back to do some nice riding.

Wilderness State Park – A Beautiful Northern Michigan Destination Wilderness State Park near Carp Lake, Michigan, offers one of the best camping experiences in the state. With perfect summer weather, cool lake breezes, and star-filled night skies, it’s a destination that feels both relaxing and refreshing. The campground is quiet, clean, and shaded by tall pines, providing a peaceful setting for tents, small RVs, and campervans like the Mini-T Campervan. Many sites are close to Lake Michigan, making it easy to enjoy the beach or walk the scenic trails that wind through dunes and forest. This park combines natural beauty, well-kept facilities, and a convenient location just west of Mackinaw City — an ideal stop for anyone exploring northern Michigan.

A wonderful place to camp and hike. Get reservations early it fills up. Hike to Waugachance Point in the spring is a rare treat. Foliage is unique and great photo Ops of flowers. Fall is ominous and desolate. An interesting contrast to spring that is bursting with color and life.

We stayed in the rustic section for the second time. This year we stayed in site 119. The photos on the booking page are not recent so I included photos to get a better perspective of current status. Our tent faced the opening to the Lake which was BEAUTIFUL. We got to see the sunset each night. A couple nights we had great neighbors who seemed to have the same thing in mind that we did - rustic camping + peace and quiet. The first two nights we had a neighbor at site 118 who kept the radio going from 7:00AM - 8:30PM daily. Another night there were a group of rowdy teens on site 120 who were partying until 2:00AM. It is nothing we could control and we were still able to enjoy our stay. These sites are directly next to the RV sites but I couldn't hear generators or anything. The nearest porta potty is probably 4x the size of what you normally see at a festival or carnival. The floor is concrete. It was really clean and staff cleaned it each weekday morning. For the most part, there isn't a smell. There is a sign that states to keep the seat down to decrease the smell so most people followed this. There is a small window that lets in light but if you have to go at night, bring a light! We went hiking on the Nebo Trail, Wikenhs Trail and Red Pine Trail. This took us little over 2 hours. The Red Pine Trail has a bench 3/4 of the way through to sit and take in the view. We did not see anyone on the trail but there were a number of vehicles parked. There were lots of interesting mushrooms. We did not see any animals besides squirrels, chipmunks and small snakes. Overall I would surely recommend to camp here!

Bodies of Water
Dead River Falls, located just outside Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. The half-mile trail along the Dead River offers stunning views of multiple waterfalls cascading into sparkling pools. While the trek is not overly challenging, hikers should be cautious of the deceptively strong river currents. The falls are active throughout most of the year and provide ample opportunities for photography and relaxation.
So you park in what looks like the power plant lot. You walk up a rather steep gravel hill. There's a wood sign off to the left indicating the trail to the falls. We only walked to the first water fall. It was picturesque and very peaceful. We saw others with beach towels and blankets. Apparently if you keep walking up and around in the tail, there's a spot where people jump off the rocks, into the falls. I think they said there are 4 sets of waterfalls? Lots of tree roots and a very steep trail. Would highly recommend NOT wearing flip flops! Lots of parking space available. We got a few mosquito bites a long the way. There was one porta potty on site ( but no toilet paper when we were there on a Thursday)
Heather K — Google review
This was an amazing hike! It is a little strenuous but totally worth it! Along our hike we had to have seen four or five very large waterfalls. The trail was covered West lots of roots which honestly helped climb the Hills. If you're looking for a somewhat challenging hike and beautiful scenery I highly recommend this!
Brandy S — Google review
Beautiful spot, it's not too far away from the parking lot however that hill you have to walk up can be brutal on your legs but it's worth it once you get to the top. There's 3 waterfalls Incase you go the wrong way and just see the one. Very nice place and relaxing. A few signs along the way so you know where you're going. The porta potty was very nasty with poop smeared everywhere. (Where did they even wash their hands???)
Thomas S — Google review
Really enjoyed the multiple layers of falls. Path starts with a steep walk up a gravel road, then down some stairs. first fall is at the bottom of.the stairs. After that it's a worn dirt path with elevation changes and roots. There is one part you walk across a bridge made of logs, not horrible but you need some balance and agility for sure.
Brian S — Google review
Great hike, 3.5 km in and out, a good 1 hr. Lots roots to navigate. Where log is across stream, depending on the time of year go up stream and cross on rocks lol
Ali L — Google review
Amazing hike. Beautiful and so freakin' relaxing. It is like a hidden gem. It's a clear path but not regular terrain. There are lots of tree roots, fallen trees, path takes you near cliffs but it is seriously amazing. Don't recommend it for those who walk with canes or poor balance or young kids. Also, when you arrive, you will see a porta potty and a yellow gate. It doesn't look like the beginning of a trail. But continue on. The falls are beautiful. Sit down on the rocks, dip your feet in the water & enjoy nature.
Chriss D — Google review
Definitely needed my hiking boots on this one. All if the falls along the river were beautiful

Hogback Mountain offers an adventurous hiking experience with a challenging trail that leads to breathtaking views of the Huron Mountains and Lake Superior. The hike, which is around 2 miles long with a 600-foot elevation gain, includes some steep hills, rocky steps, and obstacles to navigate. The last half mile involves scrambling up a rocky face rather than a typical hike.
Came up here during a storm (which was scary to say the least) but after the rain and thunder past the Hogback left an absolutely breathtaking Vista of Marquette and Lake Superior. We watched as clouds rolled by and the fog passed over the bay.

Awesome trail. Not for out of shape people. There are other easier trails nearby also. Be sure to have your phone GPS on as the trail marking is a little unclear. Also you need to pay for a recreation pass, either a day for $9 or annual for $17 resident / $34 for out of state resident.

What a great hike. Roughly 60 minutes, maybe 🤔 2ish miles. Couple steeper hills and or rock steps and roots. Need to be able to maintain your breathing as some parts require climbing and stepping over obstacles. Mostly because your climbing a mountain ...right. 😄 good wore trail most the way. Always a few cut throughs but main route is preferable of ease. So I say intermediate level for sure. Great hike though and very much worth the views. Been up there a few times over the years. Always a must for me when the chance arises. Great family outing. It is more popular these days so often enough their will be others along the trail. Which was beneficial for the one couple we ran into that were kinda going the wrong direction . They asked for help and I pointed them in the right direction as I headed up the same way. With a dog they made it as well.

Beautiful view, very last part of the trail has a high slope. Hiked this in the winter. The trail is traveled by hikers and bikers so unless it just snowed a lot snowshoes aren't needed. Yak tracks or something of that nature are needed or very helpful for the last part.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a stunning park that boasts 40 miles of lakeshore and 100 miles of trails weaving through a northern hardwood forest. The area features the impressive Spray Falls, where Spray Creek cascades over rugged cliffs into Lake Superior. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as camping, kayaking, and hiking while taking in the breathtaking sights of dunes, waterfalls, sparkling inland lakes and streams, towering sandstone cliffs, and unique rock formations.
As someone who’s lived in Los Angeles for 11 years, I can vouch that, at least in the summer, you won’t be able to tell the difference between Lake Superior and the Pacific Ocean. Whole area has pristine turquoise blue water and something for everyone. Long trails for serious hikers, easy viewing platforms for families or those doing a sightseeing road trip, and incredible beaches too. I drove up Miners Castle Road to miners falls and and also hiked around miners beach and mosquito beach, honestly you can skip the falls unless you have small children, there are many other better and less crowded falls in the area and in the UP in general. Don’t skip miners beach! Incredible place, please go!

The Chapel Rock / Mosquito lake loop is possibly the best hike in Michigan for beautiful, panoramic views. Only two other hikes ( that I'm aware of) can come close to this for sheer beauty: The Escarpment trail at Lake of the Clouds and the Empire Bluffs trail at Sleeping Bear. I would suggest bringing Bear spray on this hike, along with a first aid kit. ( I saw a bear!) The trail conditions are treacherous at times, especially the hikes in and out to the coast. But, once you get to the cliffs, it is almost a dreamlike walk. Be mindful of your whereabouts, as you can literally walk off any given cliff. Trail condition are better along the cliffs. The parking lot was overflowing with vehicles in late August, and I had to park about a quarter of a mile down the road and begin the 11 mile loop. Oddly enough, the trails were virtually empty, until you get to the campgrounds and cliffs. My return hike past beautiful Mosquito Lake ( I think we could do with a more majestic name!) was about a 2 hour solo trek and I did not encounter a single person until I approached the parking lot. You can definitely feel isolated out there, and don't plan on having internet service anywhere in the area. Happy trails!

Chapel Falls, Rock (a tree on a rock!), and Beach...all beautiful but the trail is difficult for anyone with mobility issues (81 yo mother with foot drop/brace). She managed to do the full 6.3 mi loop but was much more than we planned. Got to falls and thought we made it this far..lets see the view, rock, etc. Limited signage along trail cause confusion in spots and zero trail markers, only maybe 3 signs on entire trail. Note that trail to left for Chapel beach is far easier than to the right. Took us 6 hrs to complete (incl some beach time)..maybe half for anyone at a better speed. Definitely gorgeous and the beach offers a great spot to take a dip

Was a lovely adventure ! My boyfriend and I did the 10 (turned into 12) mile Chapel Loop hike & it was gorgeous & so worth it. One of my favorite places to visit. So glad I checked this off my bucket list. Definitely wear good shoes!! I would recommend starting by heading towards Mosquito falls as thats where the most elevation gain was (better to get it out of the way at the start of a 10+ mile hike than at the end when you're more tired!

Nestled within the picturesque Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Lake of the Clouds Overlook offers visitors a breathtaking view of Lake Superior's stunning shoreline. The park itself is a sprawling 60,000-acre expanse of unspoiled natural beauty, featuring scenic rivers, virgin hardwood forests, and pristine lakes. In addition to the captivating overlook, visitors can explore historic sites like Nonesuch Mine ruins and old-growth forests that showcase Michigan's rich history.
Lake of the Clouds Overlook is absolutely stunning—hands down one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring views in the entire Midwest. Perched high in the heart of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, this spot offers an unbeatable panorama of the glacial lake nestled between lush, rolling hills that seem to stretch on forever. Getting there is easy and totally worth the detour. There’s a short, well-maintained paved trail from the parking area that leads straight to the main overlook, making it super accessible for everyone—including wheelchairs and strollers. It’s one of the few places with true ADA-compliant access to such a jaw-dropping natural vista, and that alone makes it special. The walk is quick—maybe 5 minutes—but you’ll want to take your time because the surrounding scenery is just as beautiful. Interpretive signs along the way add some context about the geology and history of the area, which makes the experience even richer. Once you reach the overlook, prepare to be blown away. Whether you're catching the morning mist, the golden glow of sunset, or the vibrant foliage in fall, it’s absolutely picture-perfect. You’ll want to bring a camera—and maybe even a chair or snack so you can sit and soak it all in. This is a must-stop if you're anywhere near the Upper Peninsula. It's family-friendly, senior-friendly, and just plain beautiful. If you're road-tripping through the area, put Lake of the Clouds at the top of your list.

Breathtaking wide views! One of the most gorgeous lake & forest overlooks I've seen. A short boardwalk trail through the woods. There was a DNR employee showing animal furs that we could touch. Very informative! Large parking area. They say it gets super packed in the fall. If you skip the Visitor center, you can pay the fee at the booth along the way.

Great lookout. Worth the $11. Bring cash! There was a line up of people trying to figure out what to do. Unfortunately, most people don't have cash on hand. It is worth the admission. Easy trails and wheel chair accessible for great views.

The best time to visit Lake of the Clouds is definitely in the fall when the leaves are changing colors. The views are absolutely breathtaking! It was a little chilly when I went, but totally worth it. There are several hiking trails around the area that give you different perspectives of the lake, and each one is beautiful in its own way. The lookout point is easy to access and offers one of the best panoramic views I’ve ever seen in Michigan. It’s peaceful, clean, and perfect for taking photos or just relaxing and soaking in nature. Highly recommend bringing a jacket, some snacks, and extra time to explore because you’ll want to stay longer than planned!

Nice little hike to get to the lookout area. Beautiful views for miles. The shorter path had a fairly long climb but the longer one is a boardwalk so it is an easier hike from parking. The views were spectacular. It is definitely worth a stop.

Fantastic view! Main viewing platform is a short distance from the parking lot. While there are great views for the lake of the clouds, wheel chair accessablity is available until the very top. It offers stunning views of the lake, surrounding forest, and an old-school red lighthouse. This free and family-friendly spot is perfect for leisurely strolls, capturing breathtaking scenery, and catching mesmerizing sunsets. The boardwalk features concrete walkways and wooden pathways developed by the Manistique DDA but has some areas blocked off due to lake erosion.
This is a nice place to enjoy the view of the Lake Michigan shoreline. It's an easy, flat walk of almost 2 miles one way. The water was quite low when we went this time, so the shoreline was very marshy, but that is not always the case.
Martha — Google review
Boardwalk was nice, although some of the concrete was falling off/missing on the sides making parts a little narrower. You definitely must watch your step! You cannot avoid the sand to get to the light house.

The lighthouse and rustic beach were pretty. Everything else was closed after 6pm. There were only a few little shops and 1 restaurant. It's ok.

Worth the stop and walk to the Lighthouse. It was a nice evening not too many people. Beautiful views and easy parking access.

A free beautiful peaceful walk along the lake shoreline that ends at a lighthouse. Has plenty of free parking and picnic tables. I highly recommend stopping here for a walk.

This is free and a great place for families too! It's not a terrible walk out to the lighthouse. It's very peaceful and beautiful! It's a breakwater lighthouse. There were a few boats in the harbor fishing. It was a great place to collect rocks and driftwood. There is a boardwalk and a nice beach area. You have to walk a pier/break wall to reach the lighthouse. It's worth the walk. It is very pretty. Their were a couple of porta bathrooms on the premises also. It was very peaceful and beautiful. Check this place out. I hope you find it as wonderful as we do.
Troy Z — Google review
My wife and I stopped to walk to the pier and lighthouse. The walk was about 1.5 miles from where we parked. The walk to the lighthouse was very pleasant along the shoreline. The bugs were buggy along the way, mostly at the creek inlets. There was a portajon for relief if needed.

Nature preserve
Sylvania Wilderness, located near Watersmeet, Michigan, is a part of the National Wilderness Preservation System and offers an exceptional experience for camping, fishing, hiking, canoeing, and skiing. This 18,327-acre wilderness area boasts 34 pristine lakes surrounded by century-old forests. With no noise pollution or modern amenities like bathrooms or drive-thru food outlets, it provides a serene and undisturbed natural environment.
We wanted to explore a new place to hike that would give access to lakes and the colors of fall. Sylvania did not disappoint. We went on a cooler fall day, mostly cloudy. As of October 1, the check in center appears to be closed. It is normally a daily fee area of $5 but there are no envelopes anywhere to be found so I’m not sure what to make if that. There is a campground with one loop open at this point sites 1-13 and numerous backpacking campsites along the many miles of trails. Right now these are first come first serve but are by reservation only during peak season. For hiking, I recommend downloading a map as the trails are not marked all that clearly but leads to a wilderness feel. I recommend driving past the check in station down a short drive and you will come to a split. To the left a short ways down is parking at one of the trailheads that leads to miles of trails and backpacking sites. The campground is to the right. Taking a left or right and driving as far as one can go will lead to boat launches on either end. I believe there is a beach past the campground at Clark Lake. From what I could tell, Crooked Lake is only taking drop in boats like kayaks and canoes due to invasive species concerns. We had a great time exploring it woods, taking detours to see several lakes abs we plan to be back next summer to camp here.

Sylvania is a true gem for outdoors lovers - so much so I'm not sure I want to rave about it, but I will. It's unspoiled, serene, and absolutely gorgeous. Bring your canoe and unplug from the modern world.
Deanna S — Google review
For anyone who's into hiking vast stretches of pristine forest, Sylvania competes with the Porkies as the best I've seen in Michigan. Much of the hike around Clark Lake is through old growth Hemlock--Sugar Maple--Yellow Birch forest, which is always an awesome experience. This forest contains the largest Yellow Birch that I've seen, a few of which must be 3-4 feet in diameter What makes Sylvania even more special, one area in which it surpasses the Porkies, is in its collection of White Pines on the eastern shore of Clark Lake. Several of these must be at least 150 feet tall. They certainly rivaled those in Hartwick Pines, but have the added benefit of being part of a long hike through old growth rather than just a small remnant section. Only drawback is that for some reason, they couldn't give change for a 20 on the $5 entrance fee and only took cash or check. But a hike here is easily worth $20 if that's all you have--just offer to pay the next three people's entrance with the change!
Brett M — Google review
~$5.00 for day use/beach area. Tranquil, peaceful beach with all sand bottom, crystal clear Clark Lake. If you are anywhere near Sylvania Wilderness, I would recommend visiting. Even if you just drive through, you will have beautiful scenery. There are no motorized boats allowed, so all the lakes are kept pristine, and there is a pack in/pack out policy. Whether you are camping, canoeing, kayaking, or just going to the beach, it is well worth the experience.
Nick K — Google review
Nice area, plenty of parking. Wish there was more signage at the trail head for how far the trail went or where they connect.

Made my very first visit to the Sylvania Wilderness this past week. Brought a kayak along, but only had time to spend a day here (could spend a week !). I put in on Crooked Lake. Very much has a Boundary Waters feeling. Easy to "get lost" if ya don't want to be around people. Scenery is fantastic and water is clear !! Had a GREAT time !!
Randy B — Google review
I love kayaking, swimming, and hiking at Sylvania! It's a beautiful wilderness and is always so peaceful. The water, beaches, and the woods are all so clean! Make sure to steer clear of the island on Clark Lake where loons are nesting to give the little fellas some space. The Neature Walk guy and his friend Rodney would think that all of the nature at Sylvania is pretty neat!
Justin S — Google review
Our group has traveled to the Sylvania Wilderness since 2011. I think of it as the BWCA, only a lot closer and a lot easier to manage, especially for newbies. Campsites are primitive with a fire pit, and rustic bathrooms. A good water filtration device is helpful! Fishing is very good. Mosquitoes are plentiful as well - so be warned! It's a beautiful wilderness experience, with limited intrusions from civilization. June 18, 2023: Another camping/fishing trip - another great experience! New pics added of camping, fishing, sunsets.

Sand Point Marsh is a tranquil and picturesque destination located between the Munising Falls Visitor Center and the Sand Point Marsh Trail. The wooden boardwalk offers a peaceful walk through dense vegetation, providing opportunities to spot wildlife such as red squirrels and herons. Visitors can enjoy the exotic flowers and scenic views of the marsh, with easy access to Lake Superior just feet away.
Was recommended to visit this trail and was not disappointed. It is a wooden boardwalk through a marsh with really nice views. The walkway is large enough for a stroller, there are a few portions that have dipped creating an uneven walkway but it’s still very manageable. It’s very relaxing, not far from the road but the road has very low traffic.
Robert P — Google review
Nice quick loop to do around the marsh. The boardwalk is really nice and the plant life is interesting.
Griffin M — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous at golden hour in July - quick and easy loop trail with plenty of lookout spots, informative signs, and great views. Supremely excellent birding spot! The boardwalk is almost entirely flat but it is not completely smooth, it dips to the side at one point. It is not dangerous but may be a bit challenging for those with strollers, wheelchairs, or walkers looking for a perfectly flat and smooth surface. But otherwise I CANNOT recommend it enough!
Kate B — Google review
Really nice, peaceful walk on the boardwalk through the marsh. Vegetation is pretty densely packed alongside in some places, as if the wooden structure is just a month or two away from disappearing altogether. Only saw some red squirrels and a heron, but according to signs throughout, there's a lot more that can be seen if you're lucky/patient enough.
Ryan M — Google review
For an inland boardwalk trail, this was well done with info boards and a diverse walk within trees, wetland, and mixed vegetation. I bit of a change from other areas along the lake. Across the parking lot from the beach.
Paul S — Google review
What I found most intriguing about this marsh were these exotic looking flowers sort of resembling the common houseplant called the Peace Lily. In addition to that, the lake with all of the trees in the background made for some undoubtedly picturesque scenery.
N D — Google review
Excellent for birding. Nice boardwalk. Saw an Alder Flycatcher (lifer for me), Common Yellowthroat, Black and White Warbler, Chickdees, woodpeckers, Red-breasted Nuthatch and more. No mosquitoes or flies (late July).

Munising Falls is a popular attraction at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, featuring a 50-foot waterfall cascading over a sandstone cliff. The paved trail leading to the falls offers easy access and is suitable for all visitors. There are viewing platforms along the way that provide different perspectives of the falls. In winter, the area transforms with beautiful ice formations, creating a unique experience for visitors.
Not only is it a pretty waterfall in a very picturesque setting that is worth a visit in any season. But it also happens to be one of the easiest ones to access during the winter months. Finally made it to the Pictured Rock National Lakeshore during a winter of significant snowfall and was really taken aback by the snow depth. This winter it is a snow lovers paradise and haven to Lake Superior ice fishers for sure. As well as cross country skiers, or snow shoe enthusiasts and not to mention the ice climbers. If you love winter this would be the place for you.

Really can't rate this. We took the time to go, only to discover the trail to the falls was damaged and we could not go. I did like that it said no pets allowed on the other trail. It gets old dodging dog poop that people are too irresponsible to clean up.
BL W — Google review
The falls is closed due to path damage as of 9/16/25. The ranger station visit is necessary however to get the pass for the rest of the park. Call ahead for more info.
D.S. C — Google review
There's a very short walk to the falls and there are multiple viewing platforms. There is a large parking lot here and there is a building with restrooms. The visitor's center is just a trailer with a window for now as it is a temp building while they are preparing a permanent one. The rangers are friendly and you can stamp your national parks passport book here. If you don't have a pass for Pictured Rocks, this should be your first stop in the park.

The 800 ft trail will take you to a juncture where you can view the waterfall on the lower by a boardwalk or take the stairs to view the upper part of the falls. There is a large parking lot by the visitor center. Keep in mind this is part of the National Park System and you will need to purchase a park pass.

Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as The Big Spring, is a stunning natural wonder located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This impressive freshwater spring features clear turquoise water and offers visitors a unique experience with a pulley-raft ride across its 200-foot length. Surrounded by lush greenery and rich historical significance, Kitch-iti-kipi is not only a geological marvel but also a canvas of cultural stories from the region.
We had wanted to go here for awhile. This is such an amazing place to visit. It is a State Park so you'll have to pay for admission but it's well worth it. The line was long but it goes fast and you're mainly in the shade. The raft is totally cool and gives you the view of a lifetime. Was surprised at the gift shop and the selection they had.

What to see: The 45 degrees Fahrenheit 40 feet deep water is so clear that you can see the bottom, along with fish like trout and perch. Sand tumbles up from the bottom, creating a mesmerizing effect. For the best views, you ride a self-operated (human powered) observation raft across the spring. No swimming nor fishing allowed to protect the spring. Well worth going 60 miles out of your way to go see. So beautiful, so relaxing!

Super beautiful lake but it is very packed with tourists. If you're looking for more remote views, this isn't the spot for you. Its a quick stop and go kind of thing. I don't think I was there longer than 15 minutes. Cute gift shop.

On our road trip around the Great Lakes from Philly, we made a stop at this incredible spot — and don’t ask me to pronounce the name! Located inside Palms Book State Park, this natural spring was one of the most unique and beautiful places we visited. The water is crystal clear all the way to the bottom, and you can easily see fish swimming below. You hop onto a self-operated raft that you pull across the water to the middle of the spring, where there’s an opening in the center to look straight down. It gives you a perfect view of the vibrant underwater world — it’s honestly mesmerizing. It’s a quick stop, but totally worth it. And the best part? It’s dog-friendly! Definitely add this to your list if you’re exploring the Upper Peninsula.

An amazing place!! You need a parks permit or buy a day permit to enter. It is handicap accessible for the full experience. Best seen on a sunny day. I believe it is a 12 acre lake that is 45 ft deep and stays 45° year round. And you can see the bottom like it is right below you.

Absolutely beautiful!! Prettiest thing I’ve seen so far in the wild!!! It’s mesmerizing!! It will capture you and will you stare and watch. Don’t drop your phone. There is a raft, that takes you across the water, and brings you back. Do you can see the bottom of it. The fish are absolutely huge down. And yes, you can see all the way to the bottom of the lake!!! Like I said … absolutely mesmerizing!!

Do not skip this place! It is worth an extra drive wherever you are on the peninsula. Absolutely charming, beautiful green and blue colors in the water, a fascinating spring and the raft itself is cool - super quiet and environmentally friendly. Fee is $11 (for an out-of-state vehicle) and you wait in line to get on the raft. They have a huge gift shop there as well.

It's definitely a tourist stop, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth seeing! The water is unbelievable and the hand pulled ride out to the middle of the spring is fun and educational and very pretty with that unearthly aqua water color. Seeing the water coming up through the bottom with enough force to blow the same around is very cool. I do recommend 👍🏼

Very nice to visit, not far from the parking lot. 300 ft walk upwards but do-able. Hiked up with a 30lb baby attached to me so not bad lol. Gorgeous spot with a view of the lake and the Porcupine Mountains. The viewing area is at the end of a 7-mile drive that is quite scenic. The path to the overlook is short, paved and fairly steep. At the top, you can enjoy the views from a flatter viewing area on the right, or the more adventurous can climb some rocks for a nice view.

Log Slide Overlook in a word...Wow. Had previously foolishly put this stop on the back burner as well just how great does a log slide sound? However it's one of my favorite views of Lake Superior that ive recently seen. I could just imagine how amazing a sunrise would be to take in at this location. I've been to Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes and while yes the views there of Lake Michigan are great. I think however I'd have to say between log slide overlook, and Grand Sable Dunes I truly believe Pictured Rocks is more picturesque overall. I know Lower Peninsula Michiganders love to love Lake Michigan but only one Great Lake can be Superior. And it can't be beat.

350 foot walk from the parking lot with a couple benches along the way. Apparently there used to be an overlook platform that no longer exists. The last 30 feet is a path up a sand dune in loose sand where, at the top, you can just see what was the top of the log chute. Interesting interpretive signs along the way. The view at the Twelvemile Beach Overlook is better and an easier access. Nice picnic area here though.

I debated even making this stop and my kids complained about making them walk but it was a short little stroll to some absolutely amazing views! You can climb the dune down to the lake and back if you’re feeling like a workout! Old logging equipment on the walk way down was neat to check out. Plenty of parking available at the trailhead.

Path to see dunes is a very easy walk and not far from parking lot. Fayette Historic State Park is situated on the shores of Big Bay de Noc, near Snail Shell Harbor in Southern Upper Peninsula. It features a well-preserved 19th-century townsite that was once a bustling industrial community founded by Fayette Brown in the 1860s. The park offers visitors the opportunity to explore historic town sites, campgrounds, and scenic viewpoints from towering limestone cliffs above the harbor.
My family has been going to Fayette since I was a young kid. It's one of my favourite places. Everything about it is great. The scenery, the history, the park staff, everything is just fantastic. It does require a lot of hiking so if walking isn't your thing or if it is hard for you keep that in mind before going. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is one of the least explored treasures in the US and personally I hope it stays that way. The UP has managed to stay a little wild and a little rough and it is all the better for it. Even though this state park is well visited you still feel as if you may be one of the first people to explore it. The staff have done an excellent job of preserving the history of the place without making it look manufactured. If you're looking for photo ops, you can't find a better place. There isn't a bad angle here. Improvements have been made recently to the visitors center and many of the displays. The bathrooms are clean and there are water stations throughout the park. It may be out in the middle of nowhere but it is definitely worth the drive. Pack a lunch, make it a picnic, you'll have a great time.
Brandon S — Google review
First time visiting the UP and this was one of our recommendations to visit. Very interesting story with a very interactive feeling. You can enter into almost everything and see exactly how it was preserved. The limestone cliff sides are also beautiful especially if you can kayak or get up close. You can get kayak rentals for $30 ea. For 24 hours. Ask at the park entrance.

Very interesting history. I think it's strange it never took off as a town and it was made into a historical park. Neat place and if I had more time would have stayed longer to explore. I'd say you could easily spend 2-3 hours here.

We brought our 18, 15, and 8 year old kids and everyone enjoyed the area and history. The sights, both natural and man made, are beautiful and interesting. It was a bright, hot, sunny day and no one was begging to go home early or leave to get food. 😅 In fact, they were eager to go building to building and made sure they saw every placard. I'd go again in a heartbeat. They've done an amazing job preserving the site and presenting it in an interesting and engaging way.

Amazing state park! This is one of the coolest state parks I’ve been too in Michigan. It has so much history and the DNR have done a great job keeping up on this park. It was so cool to walk around and see how they used to live and work. There are signs everywhere that tell you the history of the building or even the history of the buildings that used to be there. I 100% recommend coming here and if you do make sure you stop in the gift shop and see the scale model of what the busy town used to be like in its heyday!

The old town was such a fun piece of history. It was so cool to imagine what it had been like and the different residences as you walked around. This is a good afternoon and the ice cream in the visitors ce territorial was such a good price you cannot go wrong coming to this one. Great hikes out on the ridge as well.

I absolutely love this place! I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's amazing, historical and well managed. And dogs allowed!!!! My dog had a blast. We saw some deer too. If you love history and want a place fun for the whole family, come here!

Amazing! I had no idea this park existed until a friend told me about it. Worth the 15 mile drive off US 2. The views are great and the old buildings are pretty cool too! Excellent visitors center with clean restrooms and a nice gift shop that also sells snacks. Perfect spot for a history enthusiast! This place is also kid friendly. Lots of space to move around and learn about the past.

Straits State Park is a picturesque waterfront park located at the northern base of the Mackinac Bridge. It offers stunning views of Lake Huron, the iconic Mackinac Bridge, and even Mackinac Island. The park features a small beach along Lake Huron and provides 270 campsites across three areas for camping enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, playgrounds, and scenic bridge views while taking in the beauty of Michigan's natural landscape.
I really loved this campground for its proximity to so many beautiful places, overall layout, spacious sites and cleanliness. The only downside is that the beach which is within walking distance isn't great for a "beach day", imo. We were totally okay with that though. There are several beaches within driving distance. Would recommend!
Samantha J — Google review
The campsites were nicely sized and clean with large, safe, slightly elevated fire pits. It was nice having electricity, as a tent camper it isn't always an option. The bathhouses were very clean and dry, and I like how there was a large utility sink outside so people could wash dishes or anything else. There were a few different trails to take, which were nice and not muddy or overgrown. The beach is very rocky, but that view that close to the Mackinaw Bridge is unforgettable. I will definitely be returning to this park in the future!

Camping in a Boreal Forest - Loved it! Great individual sites. Nice small town feel - could ride bikes into town & almost anywhere. Plenty of trails for hiking. The two Great Lakes of Huron & Michigan made it feel like a coastal town on the ocean. Highly recommend it.

Underrated park, it’s worth the stop! Awesome views of the bridge from the beach and also from atop a hill, they have a wooden staircase leading up to the viewing platform (bring a quarter if you want to use it) and some plaques describing the bridge’s history. There’s a sizable campground, parking for tourists to snap pics, and even some (very) short woodsy hiking trails.
Arthur H — Google review
Purely MAGICAL and a must see! This was on my bucket list to see the view of the bridge and that was breathtaking, however, everywhere around there is simply gorgeous. The campground along the beach is amazing and I would stay there for weeks and weeks!

We are all the way from Idaho, this was THE BEST campsite I have ever stayed at. So beautiful, so clean! Full bathrooms and showers! And plenty of them to go around. AMAZING views of Mighty Mac! When back in the UP again, will definitely be staying again!!

Sometimes Mother Nature is all the therapy you need! Steep hills and thick terrain can make hiking or bike riding a bit more challenging at Straits State Park but the views are worth it. Rustic camp sites along the shore of clear Lake Huron with the mighty Mackinac Bridge are truly priceless! If you’re about the lifestyle, you will love it! Peaceful and quiet! Only downsides are some sites are unleveled and prone to flooding and bathrooms are not throughout. Overall a must see!

Nice campground set up nicely for all kinds of campers from tents to big rigs. Electric only. Sanitation dump station and also fresh water fill. Bathrooms and showers are nice. Right on the lake looking at the Mackinaw Bridge.

Seney National Wildlife Refuge is a vast wilderness with wetlands and pine forests, providing a home for migratory birds and the famous Strangmoor Bog. Visitors can enjoy encounters with various wildlife such as moose, deer, swans, turtles, ducks, bald eagles, and muskrats. The refuge offers activities like marsh drives, biking trails, nature trails through wetlands and meadows. Additionally, visitors can indulge in paddling, hunting, fishing and birding opportunities.
One of our favorite places to visit when in the U.P. Don't go expecting to see deer, bear, and moose. But if you go with hopes to see some cool birds and possibly a muskrat, beaver, and many other small animals - you'll likely be pleasantly surprised. The visitor center is very informative. Take the driving loop slow, like the sign says. It's a stunning drive, especially in the fall (don't go too late or you'll miss the birds!). Free to visit, but donations are welcome.
Nick W — Google review
Beautiful and well maintained two-tracks. Seen lots of different birds and if you look into the cattails you will see the Canadian geese with their babies. Seen a few deer and a beaver.

Essential to visit alongside your pictured rocks trip! Bird-watching paradise, even from your car. The Robinson Rd trails were also great, highly recommend a mountain bike. Seeing an otter and beaver in the daytime was incredible, would love to go back at dawn or dusk to see even more. Could easily spend a few days exploring the whole preserve, can’t wait to get back.

What an absolute hidden gem. If you're even a little bit interested in birdwatching, this must make it onto your U.P. itinerary. I stopped into the temporary visitor center and was greeted by a trio of friendly and very knowledgable gentlemen who gave me the rundown on where to go and what to expect and sent me with a bunch of really nice maps, postcards and a book about the refuge. I hadn't been here in decades and I definitely won't wait so long next time. This is a fantastic place for birding if you are traveling with kids or people with limited mobility.

Horse flies and deer flies are out in force!! We were afraid to get out of the truck. There were 100's swarming around the truck as we drove thru the refuge. But the scenery and wildlife was beautiful!

Very pretty boardwalk/forest hiking area. You get a mix of a forest trail with roots and rocks, mixed with some boardwalk hiking and regular sights of the lake on both sides of the peninsula. Great for scenic views of the water and a more-challenging-than-a-paved-trail hiking experience.

Beautiful Scenic Stop at Hunter’s Point Hunter’s Point in Copper Harbor is absolutely worth a visit! A short, easy walk takes you to stunning views of Lake Superior and the rugged shoreline. The area is peaceful and surrounded by beautiful forest roads, perfect for a relaxed drive. Easy to get in and out of your site. Nice new bathrooms and showers and even a place to wash dishes with hot water! Just remember to bring what you need. Grocery stores (Newberry) are not close by and the closest gas station was 4.99 a gallon.

We came for a hike, first time here. If you are looking for camping, this is a great place! However, if you are coming for hiking, you have to venture quite a ways from the park to get away from infrastructure, noise, and debris. The park is uniquely situated between Muskallonge lake and Lake Superior, it is a beautiful area. The park also is amidst the North Country National Scenic Trail, the hiking route of the Iron Belle Trail, and the Lake Superior East Water Trail. So plenty of good hiking, just not the loop around the campground.

Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse, located in Gulliver near Lake Superior, was originally built to guide ships carrying iron ore out of Escanaba. The lighthouse now serves as a community park and offers stunning views of the shoreline. Visitors can explore the well-kept grounds, take pictures from the top of the lighthouse, and enjoy walks along pristine beaches.
Really cool lighthouse on Lake Michigan perfect location to watch a gorgeous sunrise. I realize most lower peninsula michiganders associate Lake Michigan with sunsets however if you make you way into the U.P. you'll find that many beaches are also suited for sunrises. One of the most memorable sunrises to date for me. Partly due to the almost six hour drive to get there. But also just so happened to be standing on a Lake Michigan ice shelf watching the waves crash into the feet thick ice as the sun put on quite the display amplified by the clouds made the trip well worth it. Would be interested in seeing the beach in the fall once the leaves changed colors. There was significant snow along the southern shores of the U.P. my best guess would be 2 or 3 feet. We also went to Munising which is on the shore of Lake Superior and they probably had closer to 5 feet of snow on the ground was so amazing to see so much snow.

I love lighthouses! While we did not partake in the inside tour bc we had our dogs, we did explore the grounds. There are a couple paths/trails that lead to the lake and are well cared for. The gift shop had a large array of merchandise and was nicely kept. Restrooms were nice, however no where to wash hands or hand sanitizer provided.

The lighthouse is incredible inside and out! The climb to the top of the lighthouse tower is a must do. The view is spectacular. Well worth the entrance fee of $8 per adult. Don't miss this little known attraction in Guliver, Michigan!
Cheryl M — Google review
This was a fun, albeit not fancy, place to visit. The stairs up the lighthouse are small and it does get a bit tricky towards the top. Fear of heights or smaller spaces may make this rough for some. The house ‘museum’ is nicely kept and fun to walk around. The other ‘museum’ buildings are Dusty, very mildew smelling and a bit tough to stand. The gift shop is cute with some unique affordable items. The road leading to the lighthouse is dirt but it’s very easy to navigate. Worth your time.

Marquette Mountain Resort is a versatile facility that offers skiing and snowboarding in the winter, as well as biking and private events in the summer. It is known for being one of the most popular downhill ski destinations in the Midwest, featuring 15 trails with striking views of Lake Superior. Additionally, it serves as a hub for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with miles of groomed trails available for enthusiasts.
Snowboarding for years and this was my first time here. Overall a great place, lift lines are reasonable, runs are fun and well maintained. The Mountain Muffin is a great sandwich. Prices are comparable to other ski hills in the area. Parking can be a task, crossing the highway is super dangerous. Most trucks and even the snowplows seemingly don't slow down at all. Van and outdoor chairs got covered in flying plow debris from over 30 feet away. Views of Lake Superior from the top. Indy Pass worked great.

I skied Marquette Mountain yesterday after a day at Boho. I needed the therapy and got it! This hill is one of the finest in the Midwest for views, staff and runs. I was uniquely blessed with the finest snow and silky powder I have skied in about 20 years! The staff is so friendly and accommodating. The runs were a pure delight. What a cool vibe. Thank you.

Better skiing than expected! Some of the runs were pretty steep, and several had some small cliffs and large boulders to navigate around. Some good longer trails. Beautiful views of lake Superior too. Fun, quirky vibe to the resort with a couple metal artworks around. Lots of stuff to do in the area and less than an hour from pictured rocks. Definitely worth a visit!

This laid-back gem of a mountain bike mecca deserves 11 stars! The downhill mountain biking has everything to get your adrenaline going. From flowy green and blue runs, to uber technical double black diamonds there is something for everyone! The staff is super chill and inviting. And there is a great little restaurant on mountain for your mid day refuel. The bartender recommended the Sesame crusted tuna stack and it was delicious, the perfect food to keep my energy the last 4 hrs. 20 laps in and I'm absolutely exhausted, but can't stop smiling. Bravo, keep up the amazing vibe!

Review: Mount Marquette – A Diamond in the Rough Mount Marquette is often described as a "diamond in the rough," and after being a season pass holder for the past three years, I couldn’t agree more. This hill has incredible potential, with a great variety of terrain and natural beauty. Unfortunately, its operations often fall short of what it could be—and should be. There are areas where the resort excels, but others where it consistently struggles. What Mount Marquette truly needs is a general manager who understands the ski industry—someone who skis the mountain regularly, engages with guests and staff, and leads by example. Here are a few major issues that need attention: Slope Preparation: Grass should be cut before the snow flies to ensure a clean snowpack. Proper grooming is essential—when it’s wet, groom at night to flatten it, and again in the morning to break up frozen corduroy for a skiable surface. Snowmaking Operations: Snowmaking should not happen during peak times, especially near lift loading zones. It's frustrating and dangerous when snow guns are blasting while guests are trying to load and unload. Additionally, the snowpack by the lifts should always be level or higher than the loading zone—this has been an issue, particularly with the triple chair, for three seasons. Lift Operations & Safety: Lift operators must understand that their top priority is guest safety. I’ve witnessed distracted operators—texting or flirting—while chairs knock over kids who have fallen, or failing to assist skiers struggling to unload. This is unacceptable and dangerous. Snowmaking Capacity: While it’s great that the resort has invested in new snow guns, either the equipment is undersized or the water pressure is inadequate. At my previous home resort, Nubs Nob, they could blanket the hill in 30+ inches overnight. Mount Marquette has more snow guns but takes over a week to achieve the same result. Something’s not right. Final Thought: If the management team—especially the GM—were regularly skiing the hill in different gear (to go unnoticed), they’d get a much clearer picture of what's working and what's not. First-hand experience would drive the improvements this mountain so badly needs. Mount Marquette has everything it needs to be an outstanding resort. With better leadership and attention to detail, it could finally live up to its potential.

Au Train Falls is a picturesque waterfall located on the Au Train River, featuring both upper and lower falls. The upper falls drop nearly 40 feet and are best seen in the spring when water flows consistently, while the lower falls drop 10 feet. Visitors can enjoy an easy 1-mile round trip walk to reach an observation deck overlooking the falls. The area offers ample parking, restroom facilities, and trails for exploration.
Au Train Falls are located on the Au Train River just south of the Cleveland Cliffs basin on M94. The Upper Falls drop about 40’ and the lower falls around 10’. In dry years the falls are just a trickle, but in spring they flow hard. Signage making it easy to find and there is parking at the first turn for the upper falls and at the end for the lower. The walk down to the upper falls can be a bit slick so watch your footing. The lower falls are easily accessed by walking passed the gate and down the gravel road. Take M94 west for 12 miles, turn right onto AuTrain Forest Lake Road. Turn on first right (Power Dam Rd.) into parking lot.

Chapel Falls is a stunning 60-foot waterfall nestled within a lush forest, accessible via a scenic 1.5-mile hiking trail that promises adventure and breathtaking views. Located in the Munising area, this gem is perfect for those looking to capture Instagram-worthy moments amidst nature's beauty. The journey begins at the same trailhead as Mosquito Falls; however, hikers should veer right to follow an easy-to-navigate path leading directly to Chapel Falls.
This is a nice walk to the falls. There is some elevation gain, but nothing extreme. If the trail is muddy or water puddles, you will get your shoes wet. There are several viewpoints once you reach the falls. You can cross the bridge and continue over to Chapel Rock, which extends your distance some. It is about 1.5 miles one way to get to the falls. It is a beautiful hike.
Donna S — Google review
Very scenic, beautiful area to hike. 1.6 miles to falls; 1.6 back out. Trail is very well maintained in all areas except one set of steps. 168 foot elevation gain in an easy ascent. A couple spots are muddy for July but not slippery and were easily side-stepped. Falls views had a little tree blockage in the field of vision. As many reviews on various platforms have stated, bug repellent is a must, and coming early is the way to go if you want to get an actual parking spot. And, can-in-the-ground no-flush toilets are at the parking area but no other facilities are on the path. There are also no benches or seats along the way. As someone who needs to be careful with temperature and humidity, the 9am temperature today was in the mid 60s with medium humidity but I never needed my neckfan. A great way to spend a morning!

It’s a nice hike to Chapel Falls but it’s worth the hike. Make sure to not to turn back, keep going to see Chapel Rock. It’s confusing there and not marked. We then made the mistake of turning back after Chapel Rock when we could of just continued in the loop to Mosquito Falls. Also, parking is bad! Go early!

This is a great hike. Its a very easy trail, nice and wide plus only 1 short area with an incline. The falls are awesome and some areas you can stomp around in and explore. I would highly recommend this on you UP Tour. Road into falls is a bit rough, lots of pot holes and parking is crowded but we didn't encounter that many people on the hike.

Mosquito Falls and Chapel Falls via Chapel loop in Munising, Mi. Parking lot fills up by about 9:00am. The road in is rough. Start the hike going clockwise. You will hike through the woods a few miles and then it opens up to the stunning Pictured Rocks Lakeshore. About 7 miles in you can walk down to the beach. The whole hike is 11.2 miles. Definitely bring water and a snack. Take all the little out trails to the shoreline. You are hiking near cliffs so don’t bring children.

Its a 1.4 milke hike to the falls from the Chapel basin parking lot. Its an easy trail. Path was bit muddy. Hike trail is well marked and was filled with fall colors . You can continue the trail for another 1.8 mile to view Chapel rocks,a must visit !!! Water volume was quite good. You can view falls from 3 angels / view points We visited during Oct 11th best time to enjoy the falls with fall colors! There is a restroom at the start of the trail near the parking lot.

With the walk from the car added in, this ended up being a 8 mile loop for us. The chapel falls portion is a little longer than the other section, beautiful tree canopy on this section as well. Beach is well worth the trip. If you do the chapel falls section first, follow the trail just above the beach to find the return loop on the other side, which has a marker that says chapel parking. Great hike all around, not to be missed!

Mostly my bad for not paying attention closer to the route but as soon as we got off the main road I wasn’t sure what we were in for. My CRV handled this rough terrain like a champ.. although there were many times I questioned if she’d make it with large holes on the dirt road. I saw a few smaller compact cars have to turn around as they weren’t able to make it. GPS might take you to the wrong area but there is decent signage when you land where the GPS brings you to keep going. We saw chapel falls and it was just over a 3 mile hike round trip. It was beautiful and the views of this powerful waterfall was worth it. We were on a time constraint so we did not get to see mosquito falls but it looked like it was a shorter hike. Bathrooms on site before the trails.

Eagle River Falls is a picturesque waterfall located on the south side of Michigan 26, easily accessible from the parking lot with just a short walk. The falls consist of upper and lower sections, with the most significant drop measuring about 60 feet. A viewing platform provides a stunning vantage point over the falls' flow. Additionally, there's a pedestrian bridge offering an excellent view of the falls when passing through Eagle River on State Highway M-26.
Pictures do not do this place justice! Must see in person! I would definitely come back again. Parking right next to falls and bridge. Easy, short walk.

Beautiful!!! Close to the road, easy to get to, loved it!

Spectacular falls! One of my favorites in the UP. Right off the side of the road. Can see it from the bridge. Very peaceful.
Nicole S — Google review
Very cool waterfalls with cascades and small ponds. The bridge is high above the water.

Beautiful falls, right off the road. There’s a short walking path that leads to the dam. Gorgeous photo opportunities.

Magnificent falls. Water coming down from all angles. Quite the site to see. On one side the falls and the other a gorgeous bridge structure. This is definitely worth the stop. Easy parking too.

Mostly covered by snow currently, but still cool! Can only imagine how beautiful it is once things thaw out more. Right by the road. No hike required.

Another magnificent falls that has virtually no walk to see. A cool bridge behind the falls facing lake superior.

Lake
Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, offers a picturesque shoreline and abundant opportunities for fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. The Keweenaw Peninsula's northern location creates a unique climate that results in stunning fall colors from late September to mid-October. Rockhounds can appreciate various specimens such as agates and Michigan's state gemstone Chlorastolite around Isle Royale and Manitou Islands.
I am the Great Pirate Captain Bob! The Apostle Islands are my holy ground and the sea caves are where you wont find me! The cold blue waters of Lake Superior are unrivaled but her beauty and blessing are with those who respect her. She has the power to sink you instantly or show you purity in yourself and fresh water. Never forget The Lake is The Boss!

This lake was depressing k was expecting better tasting water but no! It tasted like fish 😡😡😡😡😡

I live by the lake and would not have it any other way. Lake Superior is beautiful even though she's always cold. Lake Superior also has lots of nice beaches with agates.

The cleanest fresh lake left mostly thanks to Canada, if it was only in America it would be polluted like the rest. Thank you Canada 🙏 FYI lake water is not safe for drinking, after reading another review, people need to know the difference between drinking water and not drinking water. Would you drink your pool water or bath water? I sure hope not!

my family lives up north and I get to spend time with them at the lake throughout the year. It’s one of my favorite places to explore and be in nature. Beautiful views and tranquility here

If you love the ocean but live in the Midwest driving to the ocean may not be always feasible. I'd suggest that the Great Lakes are a very adequate substitute. And the Mother of all Great Lakes would have to be Lake Superior it's vastness and beauty is mesmerizing. Every time I've been there with my kids they cannot wait to come back to see it again. Truly fun for the whole family.

A huge huge lake, but one that is absolutely gorgeous. It is like a sea in itself. The lake has a weather forecast of its own and can be dangerous when the weather is not fair. It has a number of beaches along side and the park office will guide you for all the activities you can do here. It is recommended to here with some experience for any of the water activities. There are some fantastic view points and the drive around is a must do!

Scenic spot
Mosquito Falls is a picturesque spot near Munising Falls, offering a beautiful loop trail that leads to the beach. The 3-mile loop takes you past several stunning waterfalls, scenic bridges, and surprises along side trails. The highlight of the hike is reaching the beach at Mosquito Beach after exploring Chapel Falls, Rock & Beach, Grand Portal Point, and Lover's Leap.
My family and I loved the Mosquito falls loop. If you follow the loop and go left first, you walk 3 miles to the beach, but you see all the falls first. We chose this, and I don’t regret it. As beautiful and fun as it is to explore the wilderness and many mossy falls and beautiful scenic bridges, ( also if you see a side trail? Follow it.. there’s probably something pretty and surprising just off the trail ) The beach though… was the best part in my opinion! We spent most the day scaling caves, and at tour boats, but the drop off of the shale rock beach looks scary. So we only stayed in the 3 foot deep water. But the beach has boulders to the left, caves to the right.. it’s just so cool! Then by the end of the day, you’re tuckered out, and it’s only a 1.9 mile walk back to the parking lot. Which was like 15-20 minutes ( if you have rambunctious 14 yr olds trying to play wizard warriors with every god made walking stick! ) The trail back IS muddy! So it’s definitely fun for the kids, and your damp towels will be to line your car seats with for sure. But it was worth every minute! Also.. I didn’t get bit by mosquitos, but I also wear purfume. So idk if that helped? And I do have poison sumac or something.. but I’m 89% positive I got it the walk just before leaving for Munising. Because I never really rubbed against leaves much there. The trail is very well kept. My trails at home are a bit more rugged. So I think it just showed the day after this walk coincidentally.

You’ll past by it on the trail. It’s small but a beautiful part of nature.
Trent N — Google review
The trail here starts at the chapel falls trailhead and diverges to the left. There is a 4.5 loop that you can do from here to mosquito beach and back. The views are absolutely amazing, and the forest is quiet and peaceful. The trail is very muddy and is very confusingly marked in places, especially near the beach itself (you have to follow the chapel falls loop across the river then immediately diverge to the right, which is the only place where they actually mark that it's the path back to the parking lot. The road may be difficult for lower profile vehicles, though I did see a lot of sedans there.
Andrew M — Google review
Wonderful 7 mile there and back trail to Mosquito Beach will take you right along the Mosquito River and right past Mosquito Falls. This trailhead shares the same location as the trailhead to Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock, and Chapel Beach. I prefer the trail to Mosquito Beach as it is pretty much under a tree canopy throughout the entire trail. Bug spray is a must during insect season of course.
Keith G — Google review
I THINK we saw the falls? Did the loop from Chappel Falls, my phone tracked ~11 miles rt to the parking area. Not from this area we now know WHY it is called mosquito falls. Before and then reaching the Falls coming in from the shoreline we started getting attacked by black flies and mosquitoes we were covered in deet and picardin and it had no effect. We had to move without viewing or be attacked!. Also the signage is horrible on the loop trail especially coming from the beach area. There are many offshoots to campgrounds and boardrd up privies and the trails have been rubbed off of the signs. When we finally got to the first falls crossing it was very steep and mud coated. The second crossing had a bridge out and you had to repel down a rope to cross. See pic. (There was no warning sign at the beginning of this trail or from a ranger. No turning back as we were 9 miles into this now). Once across, there was no signage to guide you to the correct trail. Paths lead in both directions. Same with the next crossing, we had to double back as we missed a sharp turn but a path also went straight along the rivers edge. We finally came to a sign (for those coming in the opposite direction) where the falls and beach trails parted but nothing confirming the parking lot direction. The last .3 mile was a sprint in a sandy/muddy stream up hill to the parking lot. The views along this loop were stunning and we don't regret doing it, however had we known the condition of this trail (especially the out bridge) 2 would not have done the miles. We are both 60+ in "average" condition.

This was the last sort of highlight on the loop we did that included Chapel Falls, Rock, & Beach; Grand Portal Point; Lover's Leap; and Mosquito Beach. Bit of a letdown after seeing all those spectacular points. The hike to the falls (and, indeed, another 1.5 miles past them) isn't too strenuous. You go up and down a little in places, but it's more significantly up- or downhill the last half-mile as you get closer to Superior. On the plus side, we were hiking away from the lake, and the first little stream we crossed in the vicinity (it isn't named on Google Maps or the NPS "Park Tiles" map, and doesn't even appear on the NPS brochure map) had what seemed like an even more disappointing falls, so seeing the actual thing a quarter-mile later was slightly less of a letdown than we initially thought it to be.

fantastic trail out to this pretty waterfall... the hike is great with what is essentially tree-vine staircases for a pathway in many spots
