Garden
Nestled on the edge of the bustling Thamel district, the Garden of Dreams is a serene escape that transports you back to 1920. Originally designed for field marshal Kaiser Shumsher in an elegant English Edwardian style, this enchanting garden features six charming pavilions, tranquil fountains, and beautifully landscaped grounds adorned with urns and birdhouses. After falling into disrepair post-1964, it underwent a stunning restoration between 2000 and 2007 with support from Austria.
f you’re in Kathmandu and looking for a little break from the hustle and bustle, the Garden of Dreams is basically the city’s answer to a mini paradise. It’s a beautifully maintained garden with lush greenery, charming fountains, and enough tranquility to make you forget you're in the middle of a vibrant city. Seriously, it's like stepping into a different world where the sound of traffic is replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves. Yes, you do have to pay an entrance fee, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. For what you get – a serene escape, clean spaces, and a well-maintained garden – it's a small price to pay. Plus, the extra fee is totally justified by the delightful experience of being able to kick back and enjoy the surroundings without the usual Kathmandu chaos. The garden also has a café where you can grab a drink or bite to eat. Now, fair warning, it's on the pricier side (for Kathmandu standards), but I guess you’re paying for the peaceful vibes and the fact that you're sitting in the only place that feels this calm and relaxed in the city. Still, it’s a lovely spot to sip on something cool or enjoy a snack. For those looking for a productive escape, this could be the perfect place to study or read a book – it's quiet enough to concentrate, and the surrounding beauty might just inspire you. It’s a good spot for both relaxing and getting some serious work done. All in all, a hidden gem in Kathmandu that’s definitely worth checking out!

Gardens of Dreams is a beautiful and peaceful place with lovely gardens and a relaxing atmosphere. The greenery and fountains make it a perfect spot for photography and unwinding. However, I found the staff to be quite rude, which was disappointing. Despite that, the garden itself is well-maintained and definitely worth a visit for anyone who loves nature and tranquility.

“Gardens of Dream” is a beautifully crafted experience that blends atmosphere, imagination, and serenity. Whether you’re exploring its lush landscapes or following its gentle narrative, the world feels immersive and thoughtfully designed. The visuals are rich and calming, and the overall tone encourages reflection and curiosity. While its pace may feel slow for those seeking action, it excels at delivering a soothing, dream-like escape. A lovely choice for anyone who enjoys tranquil, aesthetically driven winderful experiences.

The Garden of Dreams Its beauty is unmatched, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. it's a convenient retreat for anyone seeking solace amidst nature's splendor. The tranquil ambiance, coupled with its fascinating historic background, adds depth to the experience, making it not just a garden but a journey through time. this garden caters to all. Highly recommended for couples, families, and solo travelers . Don't miss dreams of garden ♥️❤️😍😃

A walled garden on a busy street, very lovely with fountains and ponds flower beds and even a maze. For me a perfect spot to enjoy a quite morning on a rainy day .. coffee shop was a bonus
Vanessa S — Google review
Ambiance is nice, but it’s quite small for a park / garden for me. And it’s surrounded with buildings, so air isn’t really fresh but understood given that Kathmandu is really populated and polluted. Air is not too refreshing here. Wanted to get out to get some fresh air cause I felt suffocated in the room with no windows. They have a cafe and restaurant. Foods were not too good too, can’t taste the cheese in the pizza, so I asked for more grated cheese but still the same, it seems like the cheese has no taste at all. Their ceasar salad is good, but the carrot soup is kinda sweet. Would have been nicer if it’s pure carrot. I asked if we can ask for a food delivery but they did not allow it. Service is good but they could have served better.
Beverly V — Google review
The location is nice to spend some time with friends. There are coffee shops inside and it's alright, but I thought the garden itself would be much bigger.
Arian A — Google review
It’s was calm and peaceful garden, one cafe inside, but no activity. You can seat and relax. 400 NPR seems pretty high for this. Do not expect toilet paper in the washrooms 😜

Nestled not far from the vibrant streets of Thamel, the Narayanhiti Royal Palace stands as a testament to Nepal's regal history. Once the residence of monarchs, this stunning palace has transformed into a museum following a significant political upheaval. Visitors can marvel at its impressive architecture and explore an array of exquisite royal artifacts, including ornate furniture and captivating paintings that narrate tales of yesteryears.
Narayanhiti Palace Palace is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Kathmandu and interested in Nepal’s rich history. Once the royal palace of the Shah dynasty, it was turned into a public museum after the monarchy ended in 2008. The complex is well-preserved, giving a real glimpse into royal life. Inside, the lavish halls, elegant throne room, and preserved artifacts showcase the luxury and power of Nepal’s former kings. The audio guide (available for a small extra fee) is very informative and well worth it. Photography is not allowed inside, which can be disappointing for some, but it helps maintain the palace’s sanctity and historical value. The grounds outside are clean and peaceful with beautiful gardens and fountains — a great place to stroll and take pictures. Located in the heart of Kathmandu, it’s easy to reach by taxi or even on foot from Thamel. Entry fees are affordable for Nepali visitors, though a bit higher for foreigners. Plan at least 1-2 hours to explore properly. Overall, Narayanhiti Palace Museum is a fascinating stop for travelers looking to understand Nepal’s royal heritage and political transformation.
Reezon S — Google review
Have you seen these parts of the former royal palace? Of course, everyone says, "Wow, nice place." But no one sees these integral parts of the museum. Let's have a look at some of the pictures that remind us of an abandoned place of MAHARAJAS. This is an underrated or hidden truth in the heart of Kathmandu City. We need to talk about this side as well. That's why it's three stars only.
Ramesh B — Google review
I recently visited the Narayan Hiti Museum and was absolutely fascinated by the rich history and grandeur preserved within these palace walls. The museum beautifully showcases the legacy of Nepal’s monarchy, offering a rare and intimate look into the royal lifestyle. From royal reception halls to the King’s private chambers, every room tells a story. What truly struck me was the solemn atmosphere around the tragic Royal Massacre site—preserved exactly as it was. It felt surreal and emotional. I’ve also shared some photos, opening hours, and ticket fees info to help fellow travelers plan better. Highlights: • Intricate architecture & vintage interiors • Detailed exhibits about the monarchy • Well-maintained and peaceful • Great place for history lovers and curious explorers Highly recommend setting aside at least 1.5 to 2 hours for the full experience. This place is not just a museum—it’s a journey through Nepal’s modern history.
Nabin P — Google review
It is very fascinating place to visit. It has very hidden history of royal family and their history. We must visit. Only problem is there is nothing accessible for wheelchair in side the museum but out side gardens are very nice. There is not allowed to take the photo. I recommend you to visit once.
Moti — Google review
A beautiful palace left as it was under the royal family. The pictures of visiting Heads of State are very interesting. Very poignant when you go through the personal residence and garden of King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, and their three children. No mobiles allowed in the Palace, and obviously, no pictures can be taken.
Mala — Google review
Narayanhiti Palace Museum is one of Kathmandu’s most fascinating historical sites. Once the royal residence of Nepal’s kings, it now stands as a museum that offers a deep insight into the country’s monarchy and political transformation. The palace’s architecture beautifully blends traditional Nepali design with modern elements, and visitors can explore lavish halls, reception rooms, and personal quarters preserved from the royal era. The museum also presents detailed exhibits about Nepal’s royal history, including the tragic 2001 royal massacre. Though photography is restricted inside, the experience feels authentic and reflective. Located near Thamel, it’s easy to reach and well worth a couple of hours for anyone interested in Nepal’s rich past. ⭐ Rating: 4.5/5 — A must-visit for history lovers and anyone curious about Nepal’s royal heritage.
Parneel S — Google review
The Narayanhiti Palace Museum in Kathmandu is a fascinating place that offers a unique glimpse into Nepal’s royal past and political history. Once the residence of Nepal’s Shah monarchy, the palace was converted into a museum after the monarchy was abolished in 2008. The palace’s architecture beautifully blends Western and traditional Nepali styles, with spacious courtyards, elegant gardens, and intricate woodwork. Inside, the museum houses 52 rooms, each named after a district of Nepal, showcasing royal chambers, meeting rooms, and ceremonial halls. The exhibits include portraits, royal artifacts, gifts from foreign dignitaries, and detailed accounts of significant events, including the tragic 2001 royal massacre. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained exhibits and the informative guided tours, which provide deep insights into the country’s transition from monarchy to republic. However, photography is not allowed inside to protect the artifacts, and all personal items must be left at the entrance. The museum is conveniently located in central Kathmandu and is accessible to tourists interested in history and culture. It is open most days except Wednesdays, and it’s advisable to allocate 1.5 to 2 hours for a thorough visit. Overall, the Narayanhiti Palace Museum is a must-visit for those wanting to understand Nepal’s rich history and royal heritage. It offers an educational and moving experience that connects visitors to Nepal’s past in a meaningful way.

Nestled along the serene banks of the Bagmati River, Pashupatinath Temple stands as a revered symbol of Hindu spirituality and culture. This iconic temple, rebuilt in the 15th century, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features stunning pagoda-style architecture adorned with gilt roofing and intricately carved silver doors. A Sacred and Soulful Place – Pashupatinath Temple Pashupatinath Temple is truly a holy and spiritual place, especially for us Nepalese. As a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, this temple holds a very special place in my heart. I make it a point to visit every year, whenever I get the chance. The atmosphere is peaceful yet powerful, and it carries deep meaning for every Hindu who visits. The ancient architecture, the sacred river, the chants, and the overall energy make this temple not just a religious site, but a place where you feel spiritually connected. It’s a blessing to have such a divine place in Nepal.

The golden-roofed temple, traditional wood carvings, and the holy Bagmati River create a powerful and peaceful atmosphere. The chants, incense, and sacred atmosphere made us feel deeply connected to Lord Shiva. A place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. 🙏🕉️

Very nice temple of lord shiva. Vibe is also very positive. Temple area is very vast and clean. From main gate to temple you will have to walk more. There is also time for temple to open so please see to it before reaching there or you will have to wait. At the backside of the temple, there is a river where dead peoples rituals is done.

This is a must do in Kathmandu. A large temple complex on the banks of the river. What is incredible is that you get to see locals cremating family members on the banks of the river in traditional Hindu style; both moving and fascinating. You are allowed to take photos and this is a daily event. It costs 1000 NRP to enter the temple for foreigners. You will probably be approached by a guide, which I would recommend, but agree a price up front. We paid 20 USD, but you can pay in NPR.

Kathmandu Durbar Square is a captivating landmark nestled in the heart of old Kathmandu, specifically at Basantapur. This ancient royal complex showcases an impressive array of palaces, temples, and courtyards that date back to the Malla period. Visitors are greeted by iconic structures such as the Hanuman Dhoka Royal Palace, which served as the seat of royalty, and Kumari Ghar, home to the Living Goddess.
Basantapur Durbar Square is one of the most famous and must-visit places in Kathmandu. I went there last weekend, and honestly, it’s way more beautiful than I expected. The moment you enter, you can feel the old-time vibes — the palaces, temples, and carved wooden windows show off Nepal’s amazing history and culture. Walking around, you’ll notice every corner has something interesting, from small shrines to huge statues. The place is always full of life. There are tourists taking photos, locals hanging out, street performers doing small shows, and tiny shops selling handicrafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. I spent some time just sitting on the steps, sipping tea, and watching people go by — it was surprisingly relaxing. The sunset view is magical. The golden light hits the old buildings and makes the whole square look like a painting. I also tried some street food nearby — momo and chatpate — while exploring, which made the visit even better. The vibe is lively but not overwhelming, and you can easily spend 2–3 hours just walking, clicking photos, and enjoying the atmosphere. If you are in Kathmandu, you can’t miss Basantapur Durbar Square. It’s a perfect mix of history, culture, and fun, and every visit leaves you wanting to come back again!

Visiting Kathmandu Durbar Square was a truly unforgettable experience. The place is filled with history, culture, and stunning traditional architecture. Walking through the ancient temples, courtyards, and palaces made me feel connected to Nepal’s rich heritage. The atmosphere was lively, with locals, visitors, and street vendors adding to the charm. It’s a perfect spot to explore the beauty of old Kathmandu and appreciate the craftsmanship of the past.

Kathmandu Durbar Square is a living reminder of Nepal’s rich royal past. As you walk through the narrow, vibrant lanes to reach this square, you’ll be transported to a different era. You’ll feel the sense of antiquity as soon as you enter. The palaces, temples, and carved woodwork showcase Nepal’s amazing history and culture. The first thing that strikes you is the stunning architecture. The square is a collection of temples, shrines, courtyards, and palaces. At its core is the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, which was once the residence of the kings of Kathmandu. Although much of it is now used as a museum. Another attraction is the Kumari Ghar—the abode of the living goddess Kumari, where a young girl is worshipped as the embodiment of divine power. Another attraction is the Taleju Temple, the tallest structure in the square. Although only Hindus can enter. Nearby is a huge statue of Kalbhairav, a fearsome form of Lord Shiva. Even today, devotees come here to pray. Although several temples were damaged in the 2015 earthquake, craftsmen are still rebuilding the temples as perfectly as possible. If you are visiting Kathmandu, then Kathmandu Durbar Square should not be missed. It is a perfect blend of history and culture. Whether you are a history buff, a photographer, a culture lover, or just a curious traveler, Kathmandu Durbar Square has something for everyone.
Bhaskar M — Google review
A very beautiful place. It's rich in Nepal's modern and past history. I highly recommend hiring a guide; they'll tell you about each temple and statue. It'll take about an hour or a little more to see all the temples and listen to the history. I was accompanied by a guide named Uddab, who speaks excellent English and has a very engaging story.
Oleksandr M — Google review
Vibrant industry see when you are in Kathmandu even for a couple of hours! If you would like to enjoy the view of the entire square, just walk up to one of the many roop top cafés and restaurants overlooking Durbar Square!

What a fascinating place. Went by night and again by day. Spent nearly 4 hours exploring the square. Recommend the museum albeit small. Several structures damaged by the 2015 earthquake are now open to the public but the scars are still very visible. Also recommend the small baoli/water catchment near by.

The place was very crowded when we visited on weekends so just be prepared to expect that. I would have enjoyed it more if I went on weekdays. The place was very beautiful and totally different from visiting other landmarks. You'd truly appreciate mankind and even get amazed how these architectures were built without modern technologies help and a thousand years back. Every detail of the architecture made me in awe of how crazy people used to build before. Definitely will give you a different perspective in life. Have lots of nearby restaurants and cafes so that you can enjoy the view while having a chill from inside the establishments. Had no trouble parking since they have a designated parking area for motorcycles, and a nearby private parking area for four-wheelers.

Visitors can explore this complex and witness the temple of the Living Goddess.
Very interesting place. It's great for tourists to learn about the reincarnation of a deity. Kumari will come or for 7 seconds inside here, and NO photos are allowed. You stand around a small area and wait for the signal from the 1st floor. This is a must-visit place for anyone coming to Kathmandu.

The Missus wanted to see the “living goddess “ so we went. We had to pay for the pass to the complete area even though we had already been there and seen everything except for the young goddess. We arrived as she was giving an appearance. They don’t let anyone in during this time so we had to wait about 40 minutes before she made her next appearance. There’s absolutely no pictures of her allowed to be taken. She looks like a young preteen who is bored with the routine. She looked around at us for a couple of minutes with no expression on her face then left the upper window. There were very many people in attendance to see her. Everyone has to be absolutely quiet. There was a class of students that came in while we were there, and they were very well behaved.

Beautiful building. But the highlight is definitely seeing the living goddess. Ask at the information desks at what time you could see her. It’s quite beautiful as everybody goes silent and she appears and look at the crowd. Just a couple of minutes but it is worth the experience. Ask someone also how she gets chosen, it’s a very interesting story.

Experience was good, we had to wait there for at least half and hour and we got darshan of kumari for just 10-15 seconds , building was incredibly craved , we can't go upstairs , we can watch Devi from a warandah, she comes in a window for few seconds.

Kumari Ghar, also known as the House of the Living Goddess, is a small but significant palace located in Kathmandu Durbar Square, Nepal. This ornate, three-story structure is the residence of the Kumari, a young girl believed to be the living embodiment of the Hindu goddess Taleju. The tradition of the Kumari, a centuries-old practice, is deeply rooted in Nepalese culture, where the chosen girl, usually from the Newar Shakya caste, is worshipped as a goddess until she reaches puberty. The Kumari Ghar itself is a striking example of traditional Newari architecture, with its intricately carved wooden windows and doors, and a richly decorated courtyard. The building was constructed in 1757 by King Jaya Prakash Malla and has since been the residence of the Kumari. The most famous of the windows is the one from which the Kumari occasionally appears to give blessings to visitors and devotees, a rare and sacred moment for those who witness it. While the interior of Kumari Ghar is not accessible to the public, the exterior and the courtyard can be viewed by visitors. The living goddess is rarely seen, except during special religious festivals, such as Indra Jatra, when she is carried through the streets in a ceremonial procession. Despite the fascinating cultural significance of the Kumari Ghar, some visitors might find the experience less engaging due to the restricted access and the heavily touristic atmosphere around the Durbar Square area. Nonetheless, Kumari Ghar remains a unique and culturally rich site that offers a glimpse into one of Nepal's most intriguing traditions.

As much as natural disasters are unavoidable so is the rebuilding process for historical monuments(in some cases), but even after seven years, it seems rebuilding has not been 100% achieved. But at least it feels good to see Kasthamandap being rebuilt. Standing admirably and representing Kathmandu. Respect to those artisan woodworkers and Craftsman🙏.

The greatest blessings is to accept things as it is. you have no super power to change things. The energy that kasthamandap had before has been created in new form. It's amazing to see the kasthamandap standing tall after the great earthquake. It has many historical importance that I can't describe here. Whenever whoever visits Nepal, they should definitely visit this place and for the information (it's easier, you get whatever you need in information desk). Many jatras and festivals happens in this place. It has been recorded in UNESCO heritage site too. So feel it when you travel here. Many things are in reconstruction phase, hope to see it's beautiful version after the work is done. Once is not enough so visit frequently.

Going by its local name, the Kasthamandap in Kathmandu roughly translates as a wood-covered shelter. Three stories make up the temple's structure. This temple has held the status of a revered pagoda in the city from antiquity. Thousands of pilgrims travel to this Kathmandu attraction to venerate the famed Gorakhnath holy statue, which is housed in this sacred place. This temple's most notable characteristic is that it was originally constructed in the classic pagoda style. This tourist destination in Kathmandu is also well-known for other characteristics, such as the fact that the entire shrine was constructed from the wood of a single tree.

This is ancient Mandap, said to be construed by wood (Kastha) from a huge single tree. Name of the city where Kasthamandap is named as Kathmandu. The place is in heart of Kathmandu Valley at durbar square.
Shital R — Google review
This building is on the outskirts of Durbar Square in a very busy area. The building is relatively simple and quite inconspicuous so anyone would be forgiven for not noticing it. That would be a shame though because it has about 1400 years of history as a public shelter. It is worth stopping by to see local people lazing about and resting during the day, in the same place and much in the same way they did for the last 1400 years.

The air is filled with the scent of incense, the sound of chanting, and the flutter of prayer flags. There are also lovely rooftop cafés nearby where you can sit, sip tea, and take it all in from above. Highly recommend making time for this if you’re ever in Kathmandu.

Patan Museum, situated in the northernmost building complex of Patan Durbar Square, is housed in an 18th-century royal palace. Its purpose is to preserve and exhibit traditional religious art, culture, and iconography related to Hinduism and Buddhism. The museum features a stunning courtyard known as Keshav Narayan Chok, named after a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
A Journey Through Time in the Heart of Patan Visited last Saturday and wow—Patan Durbar Square truly feels like stepping into a living museum! Every brick, every carving tells a story. The Patan Museum was the highlight for me—beautifully curated, peaceful, and rich with Newari art and history. It’s a place where you don’t just see culture, you feel it. The intricate woodwork, ancient courtyards, and spiritual energy make it a must-visit for anyone who loves history, photography, or just wants a break from the modern chaos. Sharing some snapshots I took—they barely do justice, but I hope they inspire someone else to explore this gem. Highly recommend going early in the morning for that golden light and fewer crowds!

Each part of the visit added a new layer to our understanding of the area's historical and cultural importance. The experience was well-organized, and we truly appreciated the effort put into ensuring that we learned as much as possible. It was more than just a visit—it was a learning journey that left us with a deeper appreciation for Nepal’s history and craftsmanship. Highly recommended for students, researchers, or anyone interested in history, art, and architecture. A truly memorable and educational experience!

Set within the historic Patan Durbar Square—a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lalitpur—the museum occupies the intricately restored Malla-era royal palace, built in 1734 and updated extensively after the 2015 earthquake . The architecture is a beautiful example of traditional Newar woodwork and design, with carved windows, ornate courtyards, and the recently opened Sundari Chowk featuring the 17th‑century royal bath, Tusha Hiti, complete with stone and gilt imagery of Hindu gods and Nāgas . Boasting over 1,100 artifacts, about 200 are on permanent display, including cast bronze sculptures and gilt copper repoussé works that reflect centuries of Hindu and Buddhist devotion and artistry . The collection spans from the medieval Malla period through later eras, offering both iconic statues and explanatory captions that connect graphics to meaning.

I visited the Patan Museum, and from the moment I entered, the atmosphere felt rich with history. Located in the old Malla royal palace, the architecture alone is worth the visit intricate wood carvings, traditional Newari brickwork, and serene courtyards that reflect centuries of craftsmanship. The restoration has been done with great care, preserving the authenticity while making the space easy to explore. The galleries display an impressive collection of artifacts, focusing on Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Bronze statues, gilt-copper repoussé works, and ancient religious iconography are arranged in a way that tells a clear story of Nepal’s spiritual and artistic heritage. Informative descriptions accompany each piece, offering context without overwhelming the visitor. Sundari Chowk, with its detailed woodwork and the historic royal bath, stands as a reminder of the palace’s grandeur. Every corner of the museum feels thoughtfully maintained, with a quiet, meditative atmosphere that contrasts with the bustling streets outside. Time moves slowly inside the museum. Courtyards open into shaded galleries, and each turn reveals another detail of craftsmanship or history. By the time I stepped back into Patan Durbar Square, it felt like I had experienced a preserved fragment of Nepal’s past in the heart of a living city.

Patan Museum is a famous museum in Lalitpur, Nepal, located inside the beautiful Patan Durbar Square. The museum is set in an old royal palace of the Malla kings and is one of the best places to learn about Nepali art and culture. It was officially opened in 1997 with support from Austria and today it is respected as one of the finest museums in South Asia. The museum mainly shows art related to Hinduism and Buddhism. Visitors can see old statues made of bronze, copper, and wood, along with many religious objects. Each display has clear explanations that help people understand the history and meaning behind the artwork. This makes the museum very educational for both students and tourists. The building of the museum itself is also very special. The traditional Newar-style architecture, with carved wooden windows, brick walls, and open courtyards, makes the museum look like a piece of art. There is also a peaceful garden and a small café where visitors can relax. Patan Museum is not only a place to see beautiful objects but also a place to connect with Nepal’s past. It is an important destination for anyone who wants to explore the country’s rich culture and traditions.

Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, also known as the Golden Temple, is a centuries-old Newa Buddhist monastery constructed around 1409. Despite its nickname, the temple's golden luster comes from polished gilded copper rather than pure gold. The main courtyard houses ornate brass statues and other elements plated in gold, offering a rich historical and cultural experience for visitors. It is important to note that leather clothing is not permitted inside the temple.
Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, commonly known as the Golden Temple, is a remarkable 12th-century Buddhist monastery situated in the heart of Patan, Nepal. Despite its modest size, the temple's opulent gilt facade and intricate Newari craftsmanship make it a standout landmark in the Kathmandu Valley. Upon entering the temple's courtyard, visitors are greeted by two large brass guardian elephants, leading to a lavish shrine adorned with a silver and golden chaitya. The courtyard is rich with artifacts, including brass monkeys holding jackfruits and large bronze Bodhisattvas, each piece reflecting the meticulous artistry of the Newar artisans. The main shrine houses a silver image of Shakyamuni Buddha, locally known as Kwabaju, which is adorned with drapes and ornaments, leaving only the face visible. The temple is an active place of worship, with monks performing rituals and chanting prayers, creating an atmosphere of peace and reverence. A unique aspect of the temple's tradition is that the principal priest, or Bapacha, is always a boy under the age of twelve, who serves for one month. This practice adds to the temple's distinctive cultural heritage. Visitors are encouraged to explore the temple's upper floors, where additional chapels and a prayer hall with an image of an eight-armed Amoghapasa can be found. It's important to note that leather items are not permitted inside the temple, and modest dress is appreciated. In summary, Hiranya Varna Mahavihar offers a profound glimpse into Nepal's rich cultural and religious tapestry. Its stunning architecture, intricate details, and serene ambiance make it a must-visit destination for those seeking to experience the spiritual and historical essence of Patan.

Tourists beware. A random man came up to us and started to give us a free guide without introducing himself. He was very enthusiastic and we naively thought he worked at the temple and was giving us a friendly free tour. NOPE! He stopped midway through the tour and asked us for a tip to continue the tour and to bring us to a nearby Thangka shop. It felt like an awkward moment so we tipped him (not much), and he finished the tour and dropped us off at a Thangka shop and VANISHED without saying goodbye. From my experience, many temples in other places (ie. Taiwan) have free tours. So I guess I had that in mind when visiting the Nepali temples. It’s partially our fault for not doing more research on what to expect. We definitely think any type of service should be paid, but then they should say how much upfront. It’s not professional to stop mid-tour and ask for specific amount of money to continue. It’s the lack of transparency that makes it feel like a scam. We arrived, paid ticket fee, and instantly the guy led us around without introducing who he was and why he was doing it. We naively thought he worked for the temple. 😐😵‍💫

Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, popular as 'The Golden Temple' is a historic and artistic Buddhist temple located in Patan Durbar Square, Nepal. History: The temple dates back to the 12th century and is a fine example of the unique local architecture and craftsmanship featuring a three-tiered pagoda-style structure with gilded statues and intricate carvings. Sacred Space: Inside the temple, there's a central courtyard with a shrine dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha. You'll also find beautiful prayer wheels and other sacred artifacts. On the first floor you'll find more stautes dedicated to Tara, Manjushree and other deities. Devotees chant melodious prayers in the evening. Monastic Traditions: The temple is still an active monastery and home to various traditional rituals and ceremonies. Every evening, the young monk engages in a special ritual followed by a circumambulation of the durbar square. Ease of Access: It is located a short walk from the heart of Patan Durbar Square, on the way to the Banglamukhi temple, making it a must-visit for those exploring the cultural and historical heritage of the Kathmandu Valley.

Krishna Temple, also known as Krishna Mandir, is a 3-tiered Hindu temple located in Patan Durbar Square. Built in 1637 by King Siddhinarsingh Malla, this architectural marvel features intricate stone carvings and showcases the influence of Indian temple design. It is the earliest stone temple of its kind in Nepal and withstood the 2015 earthquake.
Krishna Mandir in Patan is one of the most beautiful and spiritually rich places in the Kathmandu Valley. Located just 15 minutes' walk from my home, I visit the temple 2–3 times a week. Each visit brings a sense of peace and connection. Despite being a sacred and religious site, the area is always bustling with energy — a mix of worshippers, locals, and visitors all coming together in a truly vibrant space. Built in the 17th century during the reign of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla, the temple is a masterpiece of traditional Shikhara-style architecture, carved entirely out of stone. It holds immense importance in Hindu culture, especially for devotees of Lord Krishna. Over the years, Krishna Mandir has also become a cultural and social gathering spot — a place where people from all walks of life come not just to pray, but to connect, reflect, and enjoy the heart of Patan Durbar Square. The atmosphere is both sacred and lively — a perfect example of how tradition and community come together in daily life. Whether you're a devotee or a traveler, Krishna Mandir is a must-visit spiritual landmark in Nepal.

Central Zoo, also known as Kathmandu Zoo, is a 6-hectare zoo located in Jaulakhel. Established in 1956, it offers various attractions such as an aviary, elephant rides, and paddle boats on the lake. For children, it's an exciting opportunity to see real-life animals they've only read about or seen on TV.
I recently visited Jawlakhel Zoo and had an absolutely amazing experience, easily deserving a full 5-star rating. The zoo is well-maintained, spacious, and filled with a diverse range of animals that reflect Nepal’s unique biodiversity. What stood out the most for me—and what I loved the most—were the birds; from brilliantly colored parrots to regal peacocks and exotic waterfowl, each enclosure offered a vibrant and captivating glimpse into the avian world. The bird section felt like a tropical paradise, echoing with natural calls and surrounded by lush greenery that made it both peaceful and awe-inspiring. I also appreciated how the enclosures are designed with both the animals' comfort and the visitors' visibility in mind, allowing you to observe closely without feeling intrusive. The zoo is perfect for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking to spend a relaxing day in Kathmandu while learning about wildlife conservation. I took plenty of pictures—some of which I’ve included below—to capture the serene environment, the natural behavior of the animals, and the joy the place radiates. From playful monkeys and majestic tigers to the calm pond area where children enjoy boating, every corner of the zoo has something memorable to offer. Jawlakhel Zoo isn’t just a place to see animals—it’s a place to feel connected with nature, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

The layout offers a refreshing walk through a natural, shaded environment with a large central pond. Navigation: * Map: The map provided is simple and effective, guiding visitors on a clear main loop. * Signage: Main attractions are easy to find, though some smaller paths could use better signs. Verdict: A well-managed and clean urban zoo that offers a great natural escape. The convenience of online ticketing is a major plus.

Central Zoo is a well-kept and family-friendly place with a good variety of animals and informative displays. The enclosures are decent, and the zoo promotes conservation and education. It’s a fun, educational spot for a day out, though a few areas could use updates. Overall, a great visit!
Sagun S — Google review
For foreigners - not recommended unless no other attractions to go to. 2000 NPR for an adult foreigner is quite overpriced, considering what this zoo can offer to it's animals and visitors. Very hard to say the zoo meets animal welfare needs. Some enclosures have too many animals in a small space. The zoo is generally clean and accessible though.
Klaus C — Google review
Jwalakhel Zoo, officially known as the Central Zoo, is located in Jwalakhel, Lalitpur, Nepal, and is the country's only public zoological park. It houses a variety of native and exotic animals, providing visitors with an opportunity to glimpse Nepal's wildlife in an accessible urban setting. The zoo plays a role in education, conservation awareness, and recreation for families and tourists. However, while Jwalakhel Zoo offers a valuable experience to many, it faces criticism regarding limited space and the conditions in which some animals are kept. Zoos like this often struggle to provide the ample space and natural environments that many species require for their well-being. Personally, I am not fully supportive or a fan of zoos that do not prioritize animals’ peace and adequate living space, as animal welfare should always come first in any establishment that houses wildlife.
MK R — Google review
Central Zoo in Jawalakhel is a charming green oasis amidst the bustle of Kathmandu, offering a delightful blend of wildlife, recreation, and history. Home to over 1,200 animals of more than 100 species—including tigers, rhinos, red pandas, and even chimpanzees—this 6-hectare sanctuary is perfect for families and curious visitors alike. The zoo is not just about animals; it features lush gardens, a scenic pond for paddle boating, and child-friendly play areas, making it a wonderful spot for a relaxing afternoon. With ongoing improvements and a focus on conservation and education, Central Zoo stands as a proud landmark and a must-visit in the heart of Nepal.

Unusual 3-story pagoda dedicated to Bhimsen, the famously strong god of trade & business.
Dedicated to Bhimsen, the god of trade among the Newars - the historical inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley and the 8th largest ethnic group in Nepal. The monument is of uncertain age but was rebuilt in 1682 by Shrinivas Malla (r. 1661-85) following a fire. Later reconstructions took place in 1934, following the great earthquake, and again in 1967. Although the temple was significantly damaged (though not leveled) in the April 2015 earthquake, it reopened in early 2022 after a thoroughgoing reconstruction that retained much material from its pre-earthquake form. Like all Bhimsen temples, its ground floor plan is rectangular, with Bhimsen himself residing on the first floor (i.e., one floor above ground level). According to Michael Hutt, the temple is managed by the Kapali-Jogi, a Newar caste of Shaiva renouncers who perform services such as death rituals and religious music for community members. The shrine to Bhimsen, which they maintain, is strictly off-limits to foreigners, who are barred from entering the sanctum via its steep staircase (see image 62), but visitors are otherwise welcome to approach the building's exterior from all angles.

An ancient temple of Bhimsen Maharaj, The God of wisdom and good fortune. Stands tall at the patan Durbar square. It is one of the biggest temple in the surrounding. Massive and majestic.
Jenson — Google review
The post-earthquake renovation has reinstated the previous glory. Whether it's day or night, this temple has always been a beautiful sight. The fruit and sundry vendors in front of the temple adds to the temple's charm.
Sachi M — Google review
This is the northernmost temple in Patan Durbar Square. It has three levels with quite a bit of gold leaf on it. You probably will have little choice but to walk by this if you're visiting from Kathmandu based on its location, but that's a good thing. It is a beautiful temple with a lot of history that was rebuilt nicely after the 2015 earthquake. Definitely recommended.

The temple consists of three storeys and is dedicated to Bheema, one of the five Pandavas from Mahabharata, who was known for his strength and bravery. The Taleju Bell, also known as the Big Bell, is an ancient and massive cast iron bell installed north of Chyasi Deval (Octagonal Krishna Mandir) in Nepal. It is named after its proximity to the Taleju temple, which was considered the family goddess of the Mall royal family.
A historic place well known as Patan Durbar Square was once a palace and frontiers with temples and horseyards. Today, preservation with some modification has been done and is best to visit and experience the ancient architecture, sculptures, ancient wooden arts, etc.
Dipendra S — Google review
Taleju bell or Big bell is installed north of chyasi deval (Octagonal Krishna Mandir). This bell is also called Taleju bell because it is installed in the vicinity of Taleju temple. Taleju was considered to be the family goddess or Kuldevi of the then Mall royal family. The big bell made from cast iron is hanging between two stout pillars & was placed by King Vishnu Malla in 1736 after the earlier bell donated in 1703 was moved to the Rato Machhindranath Temple. During that time, this bell used to be rung in order to signal incoming invaders, and to make royal and other important announcements. Another idea for its construction was that Petitioners (citizens) could ring the bell to alert the king to their grievances.
Khagendra B — Google review
A big bell to alert the locals big events or disasters. Related to the past of protecting the area. Nice place to visit and hang out or taking photos in sunny day, and the sunset.
LH V — Google review
When the kings ruled over Nepal, grievances were not solved through a toll free, customer care number. Rather, it was solved with the Taleju Bell. Of course, there weren’t any phones back then so the rulers found out new, unique ways to hear their disciples. The bell, which is ancient and huge hangs between two stout pillars, providing access to be rung.

I’ve visited this gallery a few times before, but my recent experience was extremely disappointing. My friend and I were simply clicking a selfie outside the gallery when a staff member shouted at us in an unprofessional and hostile manner. Inside the museum, another staff member followed us around, constantly giving unnecessary inputs and eavesdropping on our conversation as if we were about to steal something. Followed us as if we were suspects rather than visitors. This unprofessional, intrusive behaviour made the entire experience uncomfortable and unpleasant. Sadly, I won’t be coming here again.

I visited this gallery to see an exhibition and I did not know what to expect but it was a pleasant surprise. The gallery is small but well-designed and all the artworks are displayed in a way that enhances their beauty. There are paintings as well as sculptures based on Newari traditions and culture. I really enjoyed visiting this gallery. I also saw some sculptures that I had not see anywhere else. For example, the sculptures of Annapurna and Avalokiteshvara were unique and I could not find anything similar on Google. It was a great experience. You can visit their Instagram page to see if there are exhibitions. Highly recommended.

We were looking for something interesting to do towards the end of our trip and I found the BodhiSattva Gallery. It looked interesting so I reached out to them. They provide a free tour that was very informative. I kept thinking to myself how I wished we would have done this before we did any city tours that involved symbolic images of Hinduism and Buddhism. It would have given greater perspective to our trip in Nepal. I would recommend anyone interested in learning more depth about the Newari Art to visit this fabulous gallery before exploring the city and cultural sites. Siddhartha had many interesting stories about his father's role in bringing more respect to the artists. We were able to meet his mother as well and they are a very educated and humble family. I felt nothing but respect for what they are doing to educate people about Newari art.

One of my favorite sights in Patan Durbar Square. It is located inside & in the center of Sundari Chowk courtyard. While it is relatively small, the Hiti (stepwell) is a masterpiece of Newari art and architecture. Tusha Hiti features gilt bronze spout supporting an image of Laksmi-Narayan on Garuda, on its retaining walls fitted with 72 intricately carved stone or gilt metal plaques depicting Tantric deities & a miniature stone replica of Krishna Mandir sits on its main axis. Must see!

Where Tushahiti’s waters whisper the past, Sundari Chowk stands, a beauty unsurpassed.

Located inside Sundari Chowk of Patan Museum this golden sprout is just elegant. Once the Royal palace of the kings of Patan before the unification of Nepal, the palace was later turned into Patan Museum. While the museum hosts numerous artifacts and documents of the history of the settlement, Tusha Hiti and Sundari Chowk is one of the special ones. Excluding the historical importance of this place, what you see here is the example of finest artwork from the past. The sculpture, wood work, stone work, carvings etc here are masterpieces. These are some of the best works I have ever seen in the country. If you are into history, architecture and art forms, you'll very much love this place. Highly recommend!

This was created in the 17th century as the place where holy water flows in the temple. Now, it is not functioning regularly and you can not step down inside the area where the fountain is.

This is a step well constructed in 1647 by King Siddhinarsimha Malla. The fountain spout is made of gilted bronze with Laxmi Narayan on Garuda. A message miniature replica of the Krishna Mandir is also there with a stone serpent encircling the brink. Entry is included in the Durbar hall entry ticket.

Tusha Hiti The oval-shaped, slightly cusped Tusha Hiti step-well was commissioned by King Siddhinarasimha Malla, probably to perform ritual ablutions. The fountain is furnished with a gilt bronze spout supporting an image of Laksmi-Narayan on Garuda. Its retaining walls are divided into registers of niches, each of which is fitted with a tantric divinity carved in stone or gilt metal. A miniature stone replica of the Krishna Mandir sits on its main axis, and a protective serpent encircles the brink.

"Hardcore Nepal Adventures" offers thrilling experiences in Nepal, including rafting on the Trishuli River and canyoning. The guides are professional and create a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, they provide rock climbing experiences with fun and reliable instructors who speak good English. While the prices may be slightly higher than competitors, the overall experience is highly recommended. For those seeking a challenge, the three-day kayak boot camp provides an intense but rewarding experience with patient guides.
Very good agency, provided us with a fun and reliable rock climbing experience inclusive of food, drinks, snacks and such. One of our instructors spoke good English, and we were allowed to request routes and type of climbing (not just top rope) which made the adventure fun and versatile. Best agency in Kathmandu. ¨ Cons: prices are a little higher than their competitors and guides / instructors was not particularly energetic and glad, somewhat bringing down the energy. Neither of which were big issues for us, thus 5 stars despite minor flaws.

I had the exclusive chance of being the only person aboard the caving and climbing experience. As this is my 2nd time caving, I was acquainted with what's expected. However, this 2nd caving experience made me realise how much i love caving. Same goes for canyoning- tis my 2nd time. The views of the canyoning area is spectacular, one has to really resist the urge to not take pictures but to just use one's mind as a memory card to what lies in front of us. I loved the town of Bimal Nagar and i think the mood was just right- there was just me and my two guides, Ramchandra and Deepok, and i got th chance to just sit with the silence and solitude, not to mention freezing air(haha). I absolutely wanna return to Nepal and do rafting, possibly & hopefully when i've learnt to swim, under kind advice from HC owner, Sandra Krasa BK. Many thanks to Ramchandra who is such an encouraging fella and an all-round good natured & genuine human being:) This tour is highly recommended! Visited December 2013

Did the three day kayak bootcamp-really is a bootcamp. River was much stronger then I thought it would be, and I had a hard time with it. Suresh-one of the guides at HCN suggested in the future they may start at a lake to practice, I think its a great idea. Suresh and Mani were both great, I really sucked at Kayaking and they remained patient. Eventually doing a short run down the river on the third day. The camp was great-bare bones, tents and 3 meals a day. Overall I really did enjoy myself, as did my girlfriend. I was ill prepared physically for the experience but will be back next year for a second chance. Thanks Again..

Sundari Chowk, nestled within the enchanting Patan Durbar Square, is a captivating courtyard renowned for its stunning woodcarvings and intricate handicrafts. Known as Tusa Hiti in Newari, this charming space features a central waterspout surrounded by exquisite idols of various deities. As the southernmost courtyard of the Royal Palace, it offers an intimate atmosphere that enhances its beauty.
Must ensure that you visit this palace courtyard when you visit Patan. It is included when you purchase entrance ticket to Patan Durbar (1,000 NPR for visitors from other countries, 250 NPR for South Asian countries). A small courtyard but has exquisite details - highlights will be the intricately carved Tusha Hiti (stepwell) and the carvings on door frame, supporting pillars, etc. We were here yesterday and they start to lock up the place around 5:15-5:30pm. After sunset around 5:20pm, it gets dark very fast. For art/architecture enthusiast, I would suggest to set aside at least 30-45 minutes for this place alone.
