The Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini is an ancient Buddhist shrine and archaeological site that holds great spiritual significance. It marks the exact spot where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha, who later became Buddha. The temple enshrines this sacred location, with a marker stone encased in glass and a sandstone carving depicting the birth of Buddha.
Mayadevi Temple is a sacred religious and historical place which is the main attraction of Lumbini. Emperor Ashoka of India erected a Pillar in 249 BC in which the Brahmi Script writing on analysis confirmed that Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini. Later in 19th century Khadga Samsher Rana and Anton Fuhrer, a German archeologist, further excavated the ruins of temple and the town that was dated back to 3rd century BC. Inside the temple there is a footstep of Gautam Buddha and marker stone confirming the site of birth of Buddha. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple. A pond is located beside the temple formed from two naturally occurring well (इनार) where it is believed that Mayadevi took bath after giving birth to Siddhartha Gautam. Ticket is mandatory for visit to all Nepali and Foreign nationals except if you are native resident of Rupandehi district. It is quite busy on weekend and during Buddha Jayanti. Avoid visiting Lumbini on summer as the heat is unbearable.

Visiting the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini is a deeply spiritual and peaceful experience. The temple, marking the birthplace of Lord Buddha, radiates serenity and historical significance. The ancient ruins, sacred marker stone, and tranquil Puskarini pond create an atmosphere of reverence and reflection. Surrounded by monasteries built by different nations, the site beautifully represents global unity through Buddhism. The well-preserved architecture and informative displays make it both a cultural and spiritual destination. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Maya Devi Temple is a must-visit for anyone seeking peace, history, and enlightenment in one place.

Maya Devi Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple situated at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini, Nepal. It is the main temple at Lumbini, a site traditionally considered the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. The temple stands adjacent to a sacred pool (known as pushkarani) and a sacred garden. The archaeological remains at the site were previously dated to the third-century BCE brick buildings constructed by Ashoka. A sixth-century BCE timber shrine was discovered in 2013.

Historical landmark
The Ashoka Pillar, a remarkable historical monument located in Lumbini, Nepal, is steeped in the rich legacy of Buddhism. Erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC during his visit to this sacred site, it stands as a tribute to his newfound faith. Originally adorned with a horse idol that has since crumbled over time, the pillar now features a circular disc atop its polished sandstone structure, which rises an impressive 6.7 meters high.
Historical and amazing. I visited it for the first time in 2008, a legacy from King Ashoka.
Carlo C — Google review
This seemingly 2000+ year old pillar is one of the highlights of Lumbini. It is very simple, but the history alone makes it incredibly impressive. Sure there are some doubts about when this pillar was built as well as the authenticity of the inscriptions, but there is no doubt this pillar is historic and well worth visiting
Gunnar C — Google review
Lumbini has a number of older temples, including the Mayadevi Temple, and various new temples, funded by Buddhist organisations from various countries, have been completed or are still under construction. Many monuments, monasteries and a museum, and the Lumbini International Research Institute are also within the holy site. Also, there is the Puskarini, or Holy Pond, where the Buddha's mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he had his first bath. At other sites near Lumbini, earlier Buddhas were, according to tradition, born, then achieved ultimate Enlightenment and finally relinquished their earthly forms. Lumbini was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997 In 1896, General Khadga Samsher Rana and Alois Anton Führer discovered a great stone pillar at Rupandehi, according to the crucial historical records made by the ancient Chinese monk-pilgrim Xuanzang in the 7th century CE and by another ancient Chinese monk-pilgrim Faxian in the early 5th century CE. The Brahmi inscription on the pillar gives evidence that Ashoka, emperor of the Maurya Empire, visited the place in 3rd-century BCE and identified it as the birth-place of the Buddha. The inscription was translated by Paranavitana:

This is Ashoka Pillar...One of the important attraction in premises of Lumbini...situated outside of mayadevi temple... The Ashoka Pillar in Lumbini is one of the 3rd Century stone pillars built under the reign of Emperor Ashoka. It was erected as a mark of respect by Ashoka after he visited Lord Buddha's place of birth and decided to accept Buddhism.

Great Indian King Asoka placed mile stone pillar where Gautam Buddha had born. The pillars of Ashoka are a series of columns dispersed throughout the Indian subcontinent, erected or at least inscribed with edicts by the Mauryan king Ashoka during his reign from c.  268 to 232 BC. Ashoka used the expression Dhaṃmathaṃbhā (Dharma stambha), i.e. "pillars of the Dharma" to describe his own pillars. These pillars constitute important monuments of the architecture of India, most of them exhibiting the characteristic Mauryan polish. Of the pillars erected by Ashoka, twenty still survive including those with inscriptions of his edicts. Only a few with animal capitals survive of which seven complete specimens are known. Two pillars were relocated by Firuz Shah Tughlaq to Delhi. Several pillars were relocated later by Mughal Empire rulers, the animal capitals being removed. Averaging between 12 and 15 m (40 and 50 ft) in height, and weighing up to 50 tons each, the pillars were dragged, sometimes

Even the monument can mark the birthplace of the Buddha the earliest and best evidence.

The Great Drigung Kagyu Lotus Stupa, also known as the German Temple, is a significant religious site in Lumbini. Built by the German Tara Foundation, it features a hollow crown with a glass covering that reveals a Buddha statue inside. The temple boasts beautiful gardens maintained by skilled gardeners and houses stunning sculptures depicting the life of Buddha. Inside, visitors can admire hundreds of decorative paintings in the Tibetan Buddhist style that narrate stories about Buddha and Buddhism.
I visited The Great Drigung Kagyu Lotus Stupa on 10th November 2022, and it was a truly memorable experience. This stupa, located in Lumbini, is an architectural marvel and a serene spiritual haven. The design is stunning, with intricate details and vibrant colors that make it stand out beautifully against the peaceful backdrop of its surroundings. As soon as I entered the stupa complex, I was enveloped in a sense of calm and tranquility. The atmosphere is incredibly peaceful, making it a perfect place for meditation and reflection. The stupa’s interior is equally impressive, with beautiful murals and statues that depict the rich traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Each element inside the stupa is thoughtfully designed to enhance the spiritual experience. The surrounding gardens are meticulously maintained, providing a serene environment where you can sit and soak in the peaceful ambiance. Overall, The Great Drigung Kagyu Lotus Stupa is a must-visit for anyone in Lumbini. It offers a perfect blend of stunning architecture, spiritual depth, and serene natural beauty. Great Drigung Lotus Stupa is one of the most religiously important Stupas in Lumbini and was built by the German Tara Foundation. The building contains a hollow crown partly covered in glass which reveals the Buddha statue inside. The historical significance of this building goes back centuries when the construction of this building was under the supervision and guidance of the Rinpoches. This Stupa is definitely worth a visit when in Lumbini. The domed ceiling of the Stupa is covered with Buddhist murals. The gold, wood and carvings represent the beliefs and teachings of Buddha that spreads the message of peace and non-violence. Each year, this Supa sees a great number of congregations at Great Dridung Lotus Stupa where the Highness himself visits the place to spread the message of unity and peace. Relaxation & Peace

Good food, but service is not to expectation. I read reviews and visited this restaurant, read service was bad and indeed it was. Restaurant design is good but staff need to show more respect while dealing with customers. Another point, nasty toilet! Male toilet is stinking dirty. The architectural design is good but if the place is stinking, what’s the use? Please remind staff to clean it time to time.

The food was delicious and fresh, however the service was terrible. When we entered to the restaurant was empty which made us think that the service would be fast. Unfortunately, my partner and I spent more than 30 minutes waiting for a simple Coke, which we also had to order again. Same with my tea, it took 45 minutes to arrive. I think the team has a lot to improve in terms of speed and quality of customer service. The dishes have a logical order and it is not possible that the salad is the last dish to arrive at the table or you have to insist that they remember to bring you at least the drinks.

This was probably my favorite of the various "national" monasteries, and not just because I lived in Cambodia. This temple was huge, well-maintained, visually impressive, and quite representative of the modern temple you will find throughout Cambodia. It felt like I was back in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. Moreover, it felt like one of the more open and approachable of the temples, with people everywhere and monks performing religious services right in front of you. Definitely worth a visit.

This historical location features ruined stupas and monasteries dating back centuries, adding to its cultural significance. The pond's architectural design includes descending terraces and fine brick masonry, serving as a symbol of purification for the infant Buddha.
Actual birthplace of Lord Buddha. No photography allowed inside the main temple. Although most of it has been destroyed, you can still see the room where he was born. The Eternal Peace Flame, established in 1986 to honor the International Year of Peace, is a symbol of everlasting tranquility. Nestled at the southern end of the canal, it offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Despite being near popular tourist spots, visiting during quieter times can evoke a profound sense of calm and introspection. The flame's perpetual burning represents natural endurance and serves as a place for meditation and devotion.
The Eternal Peace Lamp- Lumbini An eternal flame is a flame, lamp or torch that burns continuously for an indefinite period. Most eternal flames are ignited and tended intentionally, but some are natural phenomena caused by natural gas leaks, peat fires and coal seam fires, all of which can be initially ignited by lightning, piezoelectricity or human activity, and all of which can burn for decades or centuries. In ancient times, human-tended eternal flames were fueled by wood or olive oil; modern examples usually use a piped supply of propane or natural gas. Eternal flames most often commemorate a person or event of national significance, or serve as a reminder of commitment to a common goal, such as international peace. RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE The eternal fire is a long-standing tradition in many cultures and religions. In ancient Iran the atar was tended by a dedicated priest and represented the concept of "divine sparks" or amesha spenta, as understood in Zoroastrianism. Period sources indicate that three "great fires" existed in the Achaemenid era of Persian history, which are collectively considered the earliest reference to the practice of creating ever-burning community fires. The eternal flame was a component of the Jewish religious rituals performed in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple in Jerusalem, where a commandment required a fire to burn continuously upon the Outer Altar. Modern Judaism continues a similar tradition by having a sanctuary lamp, the ner tamid, always lit above the ark in the synagogue. After World War II, such flames gained meaning as a reminder of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust. The Cherokee Nation maintained a fire at the seat of government until ousted by the Indian Removal Act in 1830. At that time, embers from the last great council fire were carried west to the nation's new home in the Oklahoma Territory. The flame, maintained in Oklahoma, was carried back to the last seat of the Cherokee government at Red Clay State Park in south-eastern Tennessee, to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in Cherokee, North Carolina, and to the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex in Talequah, Oklahoma. In China, it has at times been common to establish an eternally lit lamp as a visible aspect of ancestor veneration; it is set in front of a spirit tablet on the family's ancestral altar. The eternal flame commemorating American President John F. Kennedy after his assassination in 1963 is believed to be the first such memorial to honor a single, known individual (as opposed to flames commemorating one or more unknown soldiers). In the wake of the Kennedy memorial, eternal flames have been used throughout the world to honor persons of national or international significance. EXTINGUISHED FLAMES One of the three "Great Flames" of the Achaemenid Empire was extinguished during the reign of Alexander the Great to honour the death of his close friend Hephaestion in 324 BC. An eternal flame was kept burning in the inner hearth of the Temple of Delphic Apollo at Delphi in Greece until Delphi was sacked by the Roman general Sulla in 87 BC. The Hebrew Bible commands that "The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out" (Leviticus 6:13, KJV), regarding the altar of Burnt Offering in the Tabernacle, and later the altars in Solomon's Temple and the Second Temple (the latter sacked by Rome in 70 AD). Many churches (especially Catholic and Lutheran), along with Jewish synagogues, feature an eternal flame on or hung above their altars (churches) or Torah arks (synagogues). When a church is founded, the flame is passed from another church and the candles are regularly replaced to keep the original flame burning. The Sacred fire of Vesta in Ancient Rome, which burned within the Temple of Vesta on the Roman Forum, was extinguished in 394 AD. The eternal flame near the Bronze Soldier of Tallinn in Estonia was extinguished after the country gained independence from the USSR in 1991.

An epitome of world peace and harmony, The Eternal Peace Flame is located in the lumbini gardens in between the mayadevi temple and world peace pagoda. In the backdrop of the flame along the straight line there is a small lake with the cruising boats and view of world peace pagoda ( visible on clear sunny days ) Best visited in evening. The marble top on which eternal flame is glowing has became black and dirty, replenishment needs to be done. Throwing of coins and currency notes is strictly prohibited here.

HUGE difference in the emotions one might feel when surrounded by thousands of tourists, in the noisy and chaotic environment VERSUS when you’re there in the evening, no one seems to be around, your heart and mind have never been so calm and it feels like you just took the first breath of your life. All your life you were suffocating without even realizing it but now you can finally breathe. If you know, you know.

Dhamma Janani Vipassana Meditation Centre, located in the serene Lumbini garden, offers a transformative experience through Vipassana meditation. Practicing meditation at the birthplace of Buddha is considered a significant part of a Lumbini trip. The center provides an ideal environment for self-reflection and inner peace, surrounded by lush greenery that enhances the calming atmosphere.
I took my first Vipassana Meditation course here in June 2025. I had a wonderful experience. The center is located within the Lumbini Development Trust area in Lumbini, Nepal. The place is calm and serene, surrounded by trees. It is perfect for people taking the course for the first time. The center has huge meditation hall with fan and AC. I loved the food they provided us during the course. Each day there was a different variety of vegetarian dish for breakfast and lunch. For first time students, they provide fruits for snacks. Since we have to reside in the center for 11 nights, I would suggest others to bring your own bedsheet, pillow cover and sleeping bag for better experience. All the rooms have fan, mosquito net and attached bathroom. Please be mindful of the snakes in the area. We saw snake on the 7th day of the course. I am grateful for the days spent in this Vipassana center. May all beings be happy !!!

Lumbini Peace Garden, also known as Lumbini Sacred Garden or Lumbini Park, is a significant destination for those interested in exploring the cultural, archaeological, and religious aspects of Nepal, particularly Buddhism. The park features numerous stupas, meditation grounds, temples, and courtyards that offer visitors a meaningful experience and an opportunity for introspection. As the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the serene environment surrounding Lumbini Peace Garden provides a tranquil setting for reflection.
Visit before 5 pm as it closes earlier as construction work is going on there. Mesmerising view. Plan to visit in Morning better pictures and pleasent view. Sunset view is not that good. The nearest airport to Lumbini, Gautam Buddha Airport in Bhairahawa, is currently undergoing expansion. The airport expansion attracted investors and hoteliers, and a series of new hotels are being constructed in and around Lumbini, hoping to cash in on the expected international tourist boom once the airport expansion work is going on.

This garden is surrounded by a small, presumably manmade lake. There is a large seated Buddha statue in the middle along with some trees. It is surrounded on all sides by temples and monasteries. I'd say alone this probably isn't worth visiting, but it is in the epicenter of so many monasteries and temples that are worth seeing. During my visit to Lumbini, Nepal in 2018, I had the incredible opportunity to stay at the Korean Temple. It was an experience that I will cherish forever. The accommodation was simple yet comfortable, with dorm-style rooms that cost only 5 USD per night. The price was incredibly affordable, and it included both breakfast and lunch, which was a great bonus. One of the most memorable aspects of my stay was waking up at 5 in the morning to meditate with the monks. It was a serene and peaceful experience that helped me connect with my inner self and find a sense of calm. After the meditation, a delicious breakfast was served, providing the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The temple offered bike rentals for just 2 USD per day, which was an excellent way to discover the surrounding area. I took advantage of this and rode around to visit the other nearby temples, including the Chinese and Japanese temples. It was fascinating to see the different architectural styles and learn about the various Buddhist cultures represented in Lumbini. Although there were mosquitoes present, the beds were equipped with covers, providing adequate protection. However, I would still recommend bringing some anti-mosquito cream to ensure a comfortable stay. One of the best things about staying at the Korean Temple was the tranquil atmosphere. It was quiet and peaceful, and not very crowded, allowing for a truly immersive and reflective experience. The vegetarian food served was diverse and plentiful, with enough variety to keep me satisfied throughout my stay. Overall, I highly recommend staying at the Korean Temple in Lumbini and taking the time to visit the other temples in the area. It was an enriching and memorable experience that I will always treasure. The combination of affordable accommodation, delicious food, and the opportunity to connect with Buddhism in such a profound way made it an unforgettable journey.

Looking for an affordable, peaceful, and unique experience in Lumbini? The Nepal Lumbini Korean Temple (Dae Sung Suk Ga Sa) is an amazing place to stay if you’re visiting the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Here’s why I loved my stay: I walked in without call or booking. And i got my room. They have many rooms. Most days have plenty of rooms available, but in rare occasions they have big ceremonies (rare!), the temple might be fully booked. No worries, though—there are other temples, monasteries, or guesthouses nearby to crash at! What You Get 🏠 Cost: Just 500 NPR per night (~$3.70)! 🎉 Payment Method: Cash 💵 Free Wifi (pretty good connection) 💡 What’s Included: 3 Korean meals a day 🥢✨ (healthy, satisfying, and sprinkled with a little Nepalese options!) Dorm Rooms: Separate for men & women (4 or 5 beds in each room) I only had 1 another person for 3 nights Bed, pillow, and a thick blanket are provided (though not sure how often they’re washed 😅) Towels aren’t provided, so bring your own! 🛁 Amenities: Multiple toilets 🚻 and laundry hanging areas for your clothes 🧺. No hot water for showers 🚿 (cold shower warriors, unite! I hate cold more than anyone I know but somehow i adapted). Strong water pressure 💦. Soap and toilet paper provided in the kitchen! 🧼🧻 And they’re super affordable if you need extra. Spiritual Perks 🕉️ 🕊️ Morning Puja: 4:30 AM – 5:30 AM (so peaceful—it’s worth waking up early for!). ✨ Evening Prayer: 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM (the lotus lamps and monks’ chanting? Magical). 📿 Highly encouraged to join—it’s such a calming and grounding experience. The Vibes 🧘‍♀️ The whole place is super peaceful, perfect for a digital detox or some soul-searching. The monks are very quiet (don’t expect “Hi!” or eye contact 👀), but their serene energy makes you feel calm. The staff? Quite, trustworthy, and peaceful. They keep the place running smoothly. 🛖 Rooms are often very empty, so it’s great if you enjoy your space. I had just one roommate for 3 nights, and another dorm had only 1-2 people during my stay. Perfect for introverts! 🙌 💡 1. Super Affordable: At less than $4 a night with 3 meals, it’s a steal! 💰 2. Wonderful meditation center for Vipassana in the Mahasi Sayadaw Tradition. The two teachers are deeply expert and guides you in the practice step by step, with utmost precision. Suitable expecially for long retreat, so the practice can have the time for developing. Last but not least, tha accomodations are nice and the food is good, so the mind can relax.

Bodhi Institute is located in the East monastic zone of Lumbini, near the sacred garden. The institute's strategic location makes it easily accessible to a large number of visitors. The site features ancient ruins, a pillar of Ashoka, and a Bodhi tree adorned with prayer flags where monks gather. The development work includes the installation of a water well, construction of fences, and temporary shelters for workers and supervisors.
We are pleased to announce that initial work has already begun. The Lumbini Development Trust and the Government of Nepal have kindly granted CEBA 80x80 m a plot of land to build the peace institute in the East monastic zone of the master plan of the Buddha's bithplace. The site is very strategically located to serve the maximum number of visitors. A water well has been installed, the fence construction is under way and temporary shelters for workers and project supervisors are being built. The proposed Dhamma Center, with its purity of intention,is a great opportunity to participate in the great meritorious act of honoring the Birth of the Bodhisattva at Lumbini Garden. The benefits that the Dhamma Center will bring by helping visitors in their practice and introducing New practitioners to the path of peace will indeed be limitless. The World Peace Pagoda in Lumbini is a magnificent symbol of peace and unity, built by Japanese Buddhists at a cost of $1 million. This impressive white stupa stands 48 meters high and features golden statues of Buddha in various poses. Adjacent to the Lumbini Crane Sanctuary, it offers stunning views across the wetlands. The pagoda's tranquil ambiance, surrounded by lush gardens and scenic ponds, makes it an ideal place for meditation and reflection.
Located in the northern side of Lumbini complex, the stupa was built by Japanese Buddhists symbolizing peace and harmony. It has a vibrant golden Buddha statue and there are stairs to climb to different levels to take a complete circle of the stupa and observe the surrounding.

At the top end of the Lumbini Sanskriti complex, this stupa shines in dazzling white, a contribution from Japanese Buddhists. After removing your shoes, you can walk around the stupa. We went on a blazingly hot day and there is no cover - take water and an umbrella. I would have hoped for more information and explanation to understand the context, that's the missing star.

What a lovely place to admire and visit in order to meditate or reflect on what matters for you! It is one od the most important World Peace Pagodas built worldwide. Its location at Lumbini, Buddha's birthplace, makes this monument unique.

The Lumbini Peace Pagoda is at the opposite end of the complex from Buddha’s birthplace. It’s constructed by a Japanese mission to create 108 similar peace pagodas. I think there are 84 or 88 already built. There’s another one in Pokhara. The grounds are peaceful and there’s a beautiful lotus pond. A gardener asked if I wanted some flower seeds, so I was all about it. Marigolds, poppies, and another red flower. Try to grow flowers from the Peace Pagoda? Yes, please.

Buddha Chowk is located in Bhairahawa Bazaar. From here, Bhairahawa Airport is 3 kilometers away and Lumbini (where Gautam Buddha was born) is 19 kilometers away. If you turn right from here, you will reach Bhairahawa Airport and Lumbini, while if you go straight for 3-4 kilometers, you will reach the Nepal-India border, which is also known as the Sunauli border. Kathmandu is 275 kilometers away from here.

A Perfect Spot for Family Fun! Red Sun Fun Park is a fantastic place to spend the day with family and friends. The rides are fun and well-maintained, especially the water zone which is refreshing and clean. The staff are friendly and helpful, and there’s a good variety of activities for both kids and adults. The park is spacious, and hygiene is well taken care of. Food options are also available inside at reasonable prices. The location is easy to reach via Taulihawa Road, and parking was convenient. Highly recommend visiting if you're in or around Siddharthanagar!

The Niglihawa Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC, is a remarkable historical monument that commemorates his pilgrimage to Lumbini. This pillar not only highlights the significance of the site but also sheds light on the spread of Buddhism throughout history. Visitors can marvel at its impressive preservation and explore nearby attractions like the Lumbini Museum, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts detailing Buddha's life and the development of Buddhism.

A Asohka's pillar, managed a person. I think the explanation in front of the pillar is not enough to expect the exact time.
Star C — Google review
The Niglihawa Ashoka Pillar, located in the Kapilvastu, Nepal, is a significant archaeological and Buddhist heritage monument, the pillar consists of two broken parts that lie close to the water’s edge. This monument marks the birthplace of Kanakamuni Buddha, according to Buddhist tradition and historical records. Emperor Ashoka visited this place in around 249 BC, enlarged the stupa at the site, and erected the inscribed pillar in the twentieth year of his reign. The inscription, written in Brahmi script in Pali language, explicitly records these events: Ashoka’s pilgrimage, the stupa renovation, and the erection of the pillar. In the 19th century, the pillar was rediscovered by archaeologist Alois Anton Führer, who documented the broken pieces and their inscriptions. To protect the fragile remains from environmental damage, a small protective pavilion was constructed by the Lumbini Development Trust in 2018. Despite its fragmentary condition, the Niglihawa Ashoka Pillar is an invaluable relic: it not only commemorates Ashoka’s devotion to Buddhism but also highlights the deep historical and spiritual significance of the Kapilvastu region.

These pillars are named as Nigali Sagar Ashoka Pillar. It has been suggested that the original base of the these Pillar fragments is the base of pillar of Ashoka discovered in Gotihawa. Gotihawa is believed to be birthplace of Kakusandha Buddha, ancient buddha prior to Siddhartha Gautama.
