Historical landmark
Plaza Sotomayor is a bustling square in Valparaiso, flanked by the Chilean navy headquarters and a central memorial honoring naval heroes. The surrounding area includes the commercial quarter with its port works, warehouses, banks, and shopping center. Adjacent to the bay are administrative buildings grouped around the plaza. The lower part of the city also features the cathedral, parks, boulevards, theaters, cafes, and colonial buildings like the church of La Matriz.
Plaza Sotomayor is a nice place to walk around, see the monument, and enjoy the old buildings nearby. Everything is close, the port, the pier, and some good cafés where you can relax and have a coffee. It can get a bit crowded, so keep an eye on your things. Overall, a nice and interesting spot to visit in the city.
Khumoyun A — Google review
Busy square surrounded by some interesting, historic buildings. Popular place to meet for guided walks. Beware, keep safe, being local advice.

Plaza Santa Maya is a must-visit walk through spot in Valparaíso! It’s beautifully nestled among some important historical buildings and sits right at the base of a couple of the city’s iconic cable cars. From here, you can walk along the waterfront, hop on a boat, or just take in the view. When I visited on a Saturday, there was a charming little craft fair happening, adding even more color and life to the plaza. It’s picturesque, full of character, and a perfect place to snap some great photos. Definitely a gemstone of Valparaíso. Follow me on TikTok for more travel finds! Sage0.x

The city center.. beautiful old colonial building around the plaza. Use the funicular ride to go up the hill. Nice area to explore. Mall are around the plaza, with foodcourt and toilet. Its quite crowded on the afternoon and a nice place to hang around.
Reyner G — Google review
Plaza Sotomayor is the main square of Valparaíso and a great starting point to explore the city. It’s home to the impressive blue Naval Headquarters building and the Monument to the Heroes of Iquique, which honors Chilean sailors. Surrounded by historic architecture and close to the port, the plaza combines history, culture, and daily local life. A must-see landmark before taking the funiculars up to the colorful hills.
Vakhtang J — Google review
Was ok but no where to park and the plaza is not like the typical plazas we’ve visited where you can grab a bench and relax. It was in the middle of two busy, busy streets.
Kevin F — Google review
When the artisanal market "Victoria Porteña" is there you can see some of the best local art made by porteños themselves such as fine stone jewellery, silk-screen printing, wood-cut printing, wooden puzzles, knitted clothing among others. You can also get great food in the local restaurants around the plaza and visit Muelle Prat for a boat ride. Recently, works have been announced for this place by the city so it could be closed in the near future

Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion are bohemian neighborhoods in Valparaiso, Chile, offering a relaxed atmosphere for daytime strolls and unforgettable sunsets. The area is filled with lively cafes, public squares, and historic cobbled streets that blend timeless charms with contemporary creativity.
I had a wonderful time exploring Cerro Alegre in Valparaíso. This vibrant hillside neighborhood is known for its colorful street art, charming architecture, and winding alleyways. The mix of murals and old buildings gives it a unique character, reflecting Valparaíso's artistic and bohemian spirit. Historically, the area became popular in the late 19th century as European immigrants settled here, shaping its eclectic style. Tours usually bring people here but you can just stroll around yourselves. Also one of the safer areas in town.

This beautiful hill located in Valparaiso offers unique architecture that isn't typically seen in other cities around the world, and offers incredible street art that can be seen while walking through most streets, hidden alleys and winding staircases. A must-see for anyone visiting Chile.

We ordered tuna and beef steak. The tuna was excellent. Respect to the chef because the beef steak was prepared according to art but the quality of the meat was good for a goulash. The wine was wonderful.

Cerro Concepcion, a historic hill in Valparaiso, boasts the iconic Ascensor Concepcion funicular dating back to 1883. This popular attraction climbs 69 meters at a 45-degree gradient from Carreno to Paseo Gervasoni. The area is home to Museo El Mirador de Lukas and two significant churches: Iglesia Anglicana San Pablo and Iglesia Luterana.
Absolutely fantastic neighborhood where every single twist and turn leads to absolutely amazing scenery. From the beautiful and meticulously painted start art to the painted fronts of residential buildings and the lovely shops scattered throughout the area. This place is a must see in the port city. All located within the historic quarter and designated as a UNESCO world heritage site which ensures this place remains beautiful for many years to come.

One of the most beautiful places in Chile! I found this place on a Google search as I was looking for a day trip from Santiago. It's about 2 hrs away but a pretty drive in the fall. The town is built on a hill and is a major port of the country. The old buildings are so colorful and pretty! There are lots of good seafood restaurants in the area. Very nice area to walk around. The roads are narrow and tough for cars. Some good viewpoints of the ocean and city as well. Need to come back to explore more!!
Jason F — Google review
This hill is one of the most touristy parts of Valpo so you definitely should check it out, but you can skip the restaurants up there because you're paying for prime real estate instead of the food. It's certainly very colorful and you have to walk through it if you are on a walking tour.

Captain S — Google review
Walk this Neighbourhood. Valparaíso is not a beautiful city, but a rather badly maintained mix of architecture, while having the typical chaos and rowdiness of a traditional port city. Nevertheless the Cerro Concepción thrives in this, allowing the liberty of art and alternative lifestyles to express themselves here. Most houses are covered in graffiti art (or not so art), making for a pleasant walk along its narrow streets and many photo opportunities.
Pedro P — Google review
Nice hill, plenty of little restaurants, there are some public terraces with bay view and lot of streets that go around rustic places. This is a very old city with history all around.

La Sebastiana, located in Valparaiso, is a house with a rich history. Originally built for Sebastian Callao and later finished by the renowned poet Pablo Neruda, it became one of three homes owned by him. This red and blue house was declared a National Monument in 2011 and now operates as a museum showcasing Neruda's world through various collectibles.
La Sebastiana de Valparaíso, what an experience, a whole Universe inside, a legacy for Valparaíso and for all Chile ! As an architect, I admit I had no expectations regarding the visit of Pablo Neruda's house. Despite the fact that so reviews here for this amazing landmark of Valparaíso are moderate, I will share my impressions after an impressive immersion into an intimate universe of Pablo Neruda's life. A balance between the architecture of Gaudi's residencial's work is suitable for everyone. The house itself is talking about daily routine of Neruda, as well as an entire atmosphere of his circle of friends, jokes, moments of joy and happiness around the table or near the chimney in living room. Colours and textures, windows and doors, floors and ceilings, ceramics and furniture, everything is made with love for life! If is worth the effort to get here for a visit? Every minute of it! You will be be highly rewarded with great feelings and sensations, of course, if you are that kind of traditional traveler, with respect for the past and for the mankind heritage!

Wonderful place! The People working at the lift were super lovely! I can’t believe this structure still works by human force. The spot itself is amazing. There are lots of restaurants around with the best views of Valparaiso. 🫶

Ascensor Reina Victoria is a super fun little funicular railway in the heart of Valparaíso, Chile! It’s definitely worth visiting if you’re in this city as it’s a fun experience and provides great views. It is extremely old (built in 1902) but it still runs great. The area has a playground for children, seats, and streetlights, and it’s quite inexpensive to ride the funicular. It’s also in a great walking area for you to explore all the shops, restaurants, and street art! Definitely put this on your list of saved places!

Interesting maritime museum that provided me with more information about Chile. The price is 4,000 pesos for foreigners. There is much information about the formation of Chile as an independent country, the military, and the famous wars with Peru, the Spanish Empire, and Bolivia, as well as the golden age of the city of Valparaíso. It’s a must-see while you’re in Valparaiso.

This is a very interesting museum of the history of the Chilean navy and maritime activities dating back to the 1600s. Beautiful grounds and is still an active naval facility. Easiest to Uber here but we walked. The funicular nearby does not run any longer.

Alt though the street art was pretty, the area was very dodgy. Not a lot of people an no police or security…We got robbed and threatened with a knife..
Johan H — Google review
Valparaíso City was disappointing during my visit. The streets felt unsafe, especially at night, with little police presence. Cleanliness is a major issue—there's trash in many areas, and some parts smell bad. The city’s infrastructure looks run-down with poor sidewalks and broken roads, making it hard to walk around comfortably. While the colorful buildings and murals are beautiful, they’re overshadowed by the city’s neglect. It has potential, but it needs a lot of improvement to feel welcoming.

Super cool street art in a residential part of Valparaiso. We loved the vibrant works which genuinely transforms the city’s streets into canvas. Highly recommended for art enthusiasts as some of these could be exhibited anywhere in the world. We visited late afternoon for great photos.

There are still some nice murals to see but the whole place feels kinda abandoned by artists and visitors now. A big let down was that the Funicular was running and didn't look like it was going to be running anytime soon. From the plaza Victoria you have to walk up stairs. Hopefully in the near future there can be more investments in the area to make it a nice place again.
Blair P — Google review

the region is pretty nice and you get good views going up/down the hills but the museum itself is very lame and there’s nothing to see honestly. wouldn’t recommend/come back

Similar to Graffiti museum in Toronto. Houses in a hill painted with graffiti of different styles (from political to crazy graffiti). Didn't know it was the hole neighborhood, so we just walked 2 or 3 streets. Also has a really beautiful view of the sea.

Great collection of street art along the stairs and on the street in the hills of Valparaiso. La Sebastiana Museo de Pablo Neruda is a hilltop house museum in Valparaiso, Chile, showcasing the personal effects of the renowned poet. Visitors can explore all three levels of Neruda's former residence and admire the city views and harbor below. The museum offers an inside look at his historic 1950s style and sources of inspiration. It is a must-visit for those interested in Latin American literature and provides a unique insight into the life of Pablo Neruda.
Awesome visit. The museum/house is kept in its original state so using the guide takes you a bit back in time and feel the energy that Pablo Neruda and his friends brought to the home.

The famous Chilenian poet's house. The decoration is quite playful and luxurious. From all the rooms, the view was great. You need to put your backpack in the locker, and it has to be 100-peso coin, that returns when collect your item back. 9500 pesos and the audio guide is included. I would say, 15min is just good enough? Not much to see. The view outside the house(free) is the best photo you would get!
Zara K — Google review
Excellent, must see piece of historical preservation. The self guide audio tour is very ingaging and available in several languages. Surprises on every floor. View over Valparaiso is incredible!
R B — Google review
Amazing five level home overlooking the port city of Valparaiso. It houses an eclectic collection of personal items and furniture from the mind of a Nobel prize winning author. The audio guide well constructed and provides great insight into the man and his world. The views from his office and bedroom are astonishing. It is expensive at $9.000 per ticket, but that helps with maintenance costs and crowd control. We thought it was worth it. Oh, the young men at the entrance to the home were very helpful. They spoke multiple languages.
Paul — Google review
What a fantastic house. You don't even need to be a fan of Pablo Neruda to enjoy a wander around the 5 floors of this beautiful house with some of the best views across Valparaiso and out to sea. I highly recommend a visit.

The place was fantastic to visit. You get an audio guide (free) and you get to visit the five floors of Pablo Neruda's house. Great insights on the poet's life. Don't miss it if you are in Valpo.

I recently visited the Pablo Neruda Museum and had a good time. The museum has a lot of interesting information about Neruda's life and work. The exhibits are well-organized, with personal items, photos, and manuscripts that tell his story. One of the best parts was the amazing view from the museum. The scenic location offers beautiful sights that add to the overall experience. It's a peaceful place to enjoy and reflect on Neruda's poetry. However, the ticket price felt a bit too high for what was offered. While the museum is worth visiting, the cost might be too much for some people. Despite this, I recommend it to anyone interested in literature or looking for a lovely spot to visit. Overall, it was an enjoyable and memorable visit.

Muelle Prat is a vibrant waterfront promenade at the heart of Valparaiso's port area. It offers a lively atmosphere with fishermen bringing in their catch, street vendors selling Chilean snacks, and artists capturing scenic bay views. Visitors can take boat tours from the pier to see the city's colorful hillside constructions and historic buildings.
Muelle Prat is a very busy waterfront which has souvenirs, fishing, private and group tours of the bay on boat, and the aquarium. There is a sign painted that shows the prices for a group tour and a private tour. It was 5000 pesos/person when I went in June 2025. Best to go when there is a crowd to be able to get on a group tour.

A piece of history, still untouched! A totally must do! Learn a bit about Chilean history and one of it's most important heroes. On the port you can go around the bay in one of the of the passenger boats and take amazing pics of the bay and the cargo ship. Several souvenir shops with a variety of items for you to take to family and friends. "El bote Salvavidas" great restaurant with a great variety of Chilean and International dishes at water's edge with a truly amazing view of the port. On same aerea you can also find the newest addition to this picturesque site "Valparaiso Aquarium" although small still gives a good idea of the fish and shellfish of Valparaiso and Chilean ocean habitat. Very affordable entrance fee and each small group with their own Aquarium tourguide ( with heavy Venezuelan accent , obvious reflection of the changes of times and how diverse Chile has become regarding it's ethnicity)

This is a spot that it’s a must, you will see the real movement in a big port and the typical chilean port attitude “la picardia porteña” in Valparaiso. Take a boat ride per 30 minutes to be near to the big ships and buy handicrafts here. But be careful about thieves in this zone.

Located in the Cerro Concepcion and Cerro Alegre districts, it features iconic landmarks such as Paseo Gervasoni, Paseo Atkinson, Baburizza Palace, Museum of Fine Arts of Valparaiso, and Plaza Sotomayor.
Easy walk up. You can find where to eat, souvenirs and a great view of Valparaíso and viña del mar

Great views out over the port and surrounding area. Unfortunately it has become quite rundown. It's probably best to go on a public holiday because all the little stalls along the walkway were closed. There is some nice artwork on the way to the Paseo. The Naval Marine museum dominates the top of the hill with nicely maintained lawns. There are still a few nice little cafes open most days.

Valparaiso for me, is not a destination I would return to. It’s a port city and full of colorful communities over the hills. It looked very similar to Brazilians Favelas. Some old buildings along the way, but nothing that you would be amazed by.

Good view on all the shambles of shanty town. Has plenty corners people like to piss. Since opening of the Panama Canal and the loss of importance of the harbour the city has transformed into a big favela. The elevator- how else - was permanently out of service. Not worth a visit.

Valpo Street Art Tours in Valparaiso, Chile are a popular choice for visitors eager to explore the city's vibrant street art scene. Led by a local graffiti artist and sommelier, Al Ramirez, these tours provide insight into the evolving street art gallery and the ethical considerations of this urban art form. While independent exploration is an option, joining one of Valpo Street Art's highly informative and engaging tours offers valuable background on the artwork and artists.
We enjoyed an afternoon with excellent host Javier touring a few streets and the back alleys in Valpo. The tour was smooth paced and informative, with plenty of stops to admire the newest and greatest graf in the dead centre of town.

An Unforgettable Experience with Valpo Street Art Tours! As a professional in the tourism industry, I can confidently say that Valpo Street Art Tours stands out from the rest. Their tours go beyond the typical tourist experience, offering a deep dive into Valparaíso’s graffiti scene and vibrant local culture. The passion for the community is evident, especially through their inspiring VSA Awareness Program. I joined the Back-To-Back-Tour in a small, intimate group of just three participants. We explored charming hidden alleys and unique local shops that I would have never discovered on my own. Our guide, Sebastian "El Seba", a Valparaíso native, took us on a fascinating journey through the city’s past and present. His enthusiasm was contagious— whether sharing stories, encouraging us to slide down an old "Laundry Slide," or simply making sure everyone had an amazing time. The hours flew by! Bonus points: Whoever designed their cheeky website—kudos! Germans supposedly lack humor, but I found myself chuckling more than once. Thanks for that! Highly recommended for anyone looking for an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience in Valparaíso!

Absolutely LOVED this tour. We’ve done a lot of walking tours in South America and this is possibly my favorite one. The tour was really interesting, the art is incredible, and the guide was the cherry on top. Lego Sebastian is an amazing guide. His knowledge on all things street art was impressive. He took his time, answering any and all questions, letting us appreciate the art, and just hung out conversing with us on Chile, history, the revolution, the people. We felt like we learned a lot about techniques and styles, but also the history and purpose of street art, and learning in a really fun, active way. Just great. Highly recommend. Do the regular city tour if you must but I’d pick this one if you have to choose. 10/10!! Thanks Lego :)

Absolutely fascinating! I learned so much from this tour and realized how much goes into these graffiti and public arts. I never realize the collaborative nature of the public arts and the tour really taught me how to appreciate them not in Valparaiso but other cities around the world since these artists travel all over the world and work with many different cities. Our guide Diego was great, cool, fun and knowledgeable. One of the best walking tour I ever took.

Nestled in the vibrant city of Viña del Mar, the Museo de Arqueología e Historia Francisco Fonck is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and culture lovers alike. This charming museum features an impressive collection of artifacts that highlight local heritage, including a striking 500-year-old Moai statue from Easter Island, which stands sentinel at its entrance.
Excellent museum! Superior displays of Pacific and American indigenous cultures. Good descriptions, some in English. A couple of the electronic displays were out of order, but that didn’t detract from the overall experience. No description or story with the trophy heads. As a major attraction to the museum that would have been a plus. Upstairs they have a very nice natural history display. Kids will enjoy all the creatures. It’s a small museum, but packed with excitement.
Paul — Google review
I didn't go inside the museum but this review is for the original Easter Island statue that is majestically exhibited outside the museum. Since childhood I have been intrigued by Easter Island and its world renowned sculptures. It was wonderful to actually see an original statue albeit not on Easter Island but appropriately in front of a Museum showcasing the archeological wonders of Chile.

This is a smallish museum in an old and quaint building. The building itself has wonderful wood stair with its balusters and banisters. The displays of the artifacts on the first floor are marvelous and take you through the archaeological regions of Chile. On the second floor you will find displays of wildlife. If you are nearby, you should visit. F Y I you should Park a couple of blocks away.

We came to see the Moai (Easter Island stone statue) who guards this museum. Loved all the creative artifacts from cultures throughout Chile and South America. There are some interesting stuffed and preserved animals whichsre worth a look. :) The $4.50 entrance fee well worth it!

This is a magic place where you can find one of the most known legacies of the mankind, of course, located in Chile, at its nature,, even not in the original site. An authentic Statue from Rapa Nui Island( old Chilean name) Easter Island is the main guard of the Museum. In the left side of the Entrance, it is exposed a second piece of stone, a magnificent model, sculpture 10000 years old. The building itself is a heritage landmark, very suitable for its actual function and destination.

Ascensor Concepcion, the oldest funicular in Valparaiso dating back to 1883, is a popular tourist attraction as well as a convenient mode of transport for locals. The rickety yet thrilling ride swiftly takes passengers up the steep hillside to Paseo Gervasoni, offering stunning views of the city and port. Visitors can also opt for a ride on Ascensor Reina Victoria, built in 1902.
For only CLP $300 (USD $0.30), save your legs and ride the Ascensor. Easy ride up to Cerro Concepcion.

If you are in Valparaiso go up one of its ascensores or elevators/ lifts. We have taken both the Ascensor Artilleria and this one. The cost is 100 pesos each way. At the top of El Peral visit the Palacio Baburizza a good museum- see my review for photos. At the top of Artilleria, the great Naval Museum and a row of souvenir shops along the Paseo 21 de mayo - I also have a review. There are places to eat or buy fast food or candy at the top of both ascensores. Photos below are for both. I set 4 photos from Artilleria, set a sunset photo from our apartment to separate, and 3 from El Peral.

Baburizza Palace, a stunning mansion from the early 1900s, is a must-see in Valparaiso. Named after Croatian businessman Pascal Baburizza, this opulent building boasts eclectic art-nouveau architecture with beautiful woodwork, balconies, and small turrets. Once home to prominent figures like Ottorino Zanelli and Pascual Baburizza, the palace now houses the Museum of Fine Arts.
A fascinating place. Palacio Baburizza gives a great glimpse into how a Chilean oligarch lived in the early 20th century, with elegance, taste, and attention to every detail. The mansion is beautifully preserved, with impressive interiors, furniture, and artwork. You can really feel the atmosphere of that era. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Chile’s history and culture.

Worth the cheap entry fee. Not my fave art but it a beautiful space and interior and one of the docents, Matilde? Miranda? is LOVELY. We had a wonderful conversation as I wandered the spacious museum. I went soon after it opened about 10:30am but would recommend going later as the AM fog obliterates any views from the palace and windows. The fog lifts early afternoon. English explanation at the entry but not thought out. Very nice on-site café as well with good empanadas and carrot cake cookies! Friendly staff and I was happy I could charge my phone.

Superb art museum located in an early 20th century art nouveau styled mansion. The home is beautiful and the quality of the paintings is astounding. The collection originates mostly from Europe, but has plenty of Chilean works as well. Nice cafe and clean bathroom, too. This is a must see visit in Valparaiso.

Amazing art museum and the palacio itself! Beautiful works, well kept. Much better than national art museum in Santiago! Take it slow and wander around to explore all the nooks. Permanent exhibition is large and is only 3000 pesos, and the temporary exhibition in the basement is free.

Free entry on Sunday. The Museum is in a historic mansion and is adjacent to Mirador Paseo Yugoslavo and is easily reached via the Ascensor El Persal. There are street performers and the area is designated a local artisans market area. The art in the museum is focused on native Chilean artists and has many works that reflect the early years of Valparaiso.
Ross M — Google review
Very beautiful art gallery, prices are fair. I think it's a about 4000 Pesos for foreigners and less than 1000 for locals. The oil paintings where astonishing and varied in size. I marveled for over one hour in incredulity. There's also many explanations in Spanish. The gallery features some European artists as well as many Chilean ones. The bathroom could be cleaner and the locks on the doors repaired. I had to hold the door shut while doing my business. Also the tours with a large group of people were a little annoying as you could sometimes not enter a room because it was thus crowded. I therefore suggest minimizing the size of the group. However, definitely worth a visit if you're in Valparaíso.

Officially, the museum was open at 2.10pm, but the staff obviously didn't feel like working and simply didn't let people in, claiming it wouldn't open until 3pm. Everyone should therefore think twice about going there. But it seems typical for Chile...

Be very wary of the restaurants on the 2nd floor. The food is okay but they will make you feel really uncomfortable and pressure you into their restaurants and try to make you order something expensive, especially if you look like a tourist and speak limited Spanish.

There are some good restaurants here with delisious traditional dishes, but are hidden on the first floor, the groundfloor is amarket. You must go with a local to find the good ones, otherwise if u don't know which is the good restaurant you can get stomach sick

It is a good market with a variety of vegetables and fruits. Also a big display of groceries and things for the daily use in your home. The reason I gave 4 stars was because they don't let you choose your products (fruits and vegetables), and if you confronted them about it, they react very violently. We are the customers, hence we have the right to choose our own products.

It's an amazing hostel, with great facilities, well equipped kitchen, spacious bathrooms and beautiful terrace. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the internal design of the place. There are lockers for safety and electric sockets close to the bed. The location is very good, close to the big supermarket and the centre. Very much recommended!!

Very greedy owner who overcharges at public holidays. In reply to the owner: thanks for replying. It’s not my responsibility if my comments impact your staff, it’s yours. I requested to change my booking from two nights to one, which you accepted but barely reduced the overall price. The fact is the rate you charged for one night, even accounting for the public holidays, was inflated. $160 USD and the curtains reach the floor to cover the window? Yes, you may be able to charge that much when it’s popular in the city, but it is also greedy to do so, and obviously I’m going to rate the property according to how much I paid for it.

Great location up on Calle Ecuador, close to bars, restaurants and fruit/veggie markets. You can reach everything on foot and discover the bohemian beauty of Valpo while doing so. Great breakfast with homemade bread and jam, fruit and cereal. Just find breakfast time a tad late (9-11am). I usually went to explore and see the sunrise before breakfast already. Beds are really cozy and warm (June 23). Haven't slept better in all Chile. Finally one proper comforter instead of 5 blankets stacked onto each other and still not cutting it. Laundry service fast and cheap. Wifi was a tad unstable, usually during hours when most people were in the hostel. Great terrace. Just know that most people smoke and the terrace is the only place it's allowed. So I, who really can't stand cigarette smoke, had to flee a couple of times. Still, all in all, great place!
Ronja E — Google review
This is a beautiful and very clean hostel with comfortable beds. The rooms are a bit odd, however - mine had a double bed with a couple sleeping in it and me and another guest in bunk beds in the corner. It felt like we were intruding on someone else's private room. I'd recommend maybe one room with double beds for couples and another room with bunk beds like a proper dorm. Nico was friendly and gave good advice. There is a WhatsApp number to message with questions (as reception rarely has someone on it) but it never got answered when I used it which was frustrating. There is a small kitchen to cook in and this is also where breakfast is served, Unfortunately it often gets overcrowded, especially at breakfast time which is unusually late at 9.30am. I would recommend broadening this time so guests come over more time to avoid the aforementioned overcrowding. The breakfast itself is disappointing - bread with jam and some cereal. There was fruit (cherries and peaches) but most of it had gone off at had mould on it, and this was not replaced in the three days I was there. This is usually a budget hostel but as I paid around £70 for three nights over NY Eve (triple the usual price) I expected more. On N Y Day whoever was working forgot to get up and prepare a breakfast - I understand it is new year's day and staff might be hungover but it could have been prepared the night before. There is a small oven to toast the bed but it does not work properly (I would recommend buying a toaster!). Bathrooms were beautiful - some of the nicest I have seen in a hostel, and clean. However they often lacked toilet paper and/or were being cleaned at the same time so it was not always possible to use one when needed. The hostel is a short walk from many bars. On a side-note, be warned - Valpo is unfortunately a very dirty city full of dog poop, broken glass and graffiti and it also smells really bad. It seems to have gone downhill and been neglected since the 2019 riots etc. There is some amazing street art amongst the filth however. This is the pickpocketing capital of Chile so be careful with your belongings too!

I had the pleasure of joining a walking tour with the wonderful guide named Gonzalo in Valparaiso. His extensive knowledge of Valparaiso's history was truly impressive. Gonzalo effortlessly answered all of our difficult questions, and his excellent command of English made communication a breeze. His friendly and educated demeanor added to the joy of exploring this beautiful city. I highly recommend his tour to anyone visiting Valparaiso; it was an absolute pleasure.

I booked this tour thinking it was the one sponsored by my hostel. We arrived and saw two companies. One was the one I booked and the other was the hostel one. I realized I booked thinking it was the hostel with local guides. When we arrived, Roxane from France, was waiting and we saw the other tour that we wanted with local guides. When we decided to go with the other group, Roxane aggressively approached us asking why we were going with the other group. She began to question us and made us feel very uncomfortable and then stormed off saying things to our guide. Very unprofessional and rude toward us. Would never book again if Roxane is a guide and you shouldn’t either.

Daniel was a wonderful guide full of pride for his home town of Valparaiso. He ran the English walking tour and spoke very well and with a depth of historical and anecdotal knowledge about the city. I learned so much and saw even more and eventually thanks to Daniel we too fell in love with this colourful port city... thanks Daniel !

Good service and tasty breakfast. We came around 12 and got a table right away although it was quite full. Coffee was great too (makes a nice break from Nescafé) but inconsistent. Second coffee was hotter and stronger. The eggs came with three toast. I ordered avocado (palta) as an extra too.

In the heart of Sotomayor Square in Valparaiso, Chile stands the Monumento a Los Heroes de Iquique, a tribute to fallen naval heroes from the battle of Iquique during the war in the Pacific. The monument is well-maintained and offers guided walking tours daily at noon for visitors to better understand its significance. It commemorates the bravery of Chilean commander Pratt and his naval operations against a Peruvian warship.
Nice monument commemorating a battle with Peru during the War of the Pacific. 77 unfortunate Chilean soldiers were killed in a fight with a numerically vastly superior Peruvian unit. Tragic. No tickets, no wait, it’s a public monument.

2020.02.22 Monument to the heroes of Iquique, Valparaiso, Chile. During the war in the Pacific, beginning May 21, 1886, this monument paid a tribute to the heroes of the naval operations of Iquique and Punta Gruesa. This Iquique hero monument is located in Valparaiso. The Iquique naval battle is a naval battle between a Chilean wooden ship and a Peruvian armored warship. Chilean commander Pratt (the statue on the monument) is about to sink on the warship. On the occasion, after jumping on the enemy ship to do the desperate struggle, the country was formidable, so cast a monument in memory.

Caleta Portales is a beautiful sandy beach with stunning sunset views and plenty of restaurants and cafes to enjoy. In addition, there is a fish market nearby that attracts sea lions for food scraps.
Honestly, we pulled up to this spot on our tour, and I thought, "Oh, a fish market. Okay." We were shown a couple of seals way off in the distance, and, well, let's just say I wasn't exactly blown away. I was thinking, "Is that it?" Then, out of absolute nowhere, it happened. It was like a scene from a nature documentary, but right in front of us! Suddenly, a whole army of seals started marching up the beach. I mean, marching. They were coming from everywhere, just surging onto the sand, all headed towards the discarded fish from the market. My jaw literally dropped. It was incredible! We were so close, we could hear them snorting and jostling each other. The sheer number of them, and how quickly they appeared, was just mind-blowing. It went from "meh" to "HOLY COW!" in a matter of seconds. It was one of those travel moments you never forget. You go somewhere thinking it's just a quick stop, and then you witness something truly amazing. I was completely and utterly surprised, and I'm so glad we got to see it. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

The beach at Playa Caleta Portales was disappointing. It was very crowded, making it hard to relax or find a peaceful spot. The cleanliness is a big issue—trash was scattered everywhere, and there didn’t seem to be enough bins. The water didn’t look very clean either, which was off-putting. There were also limited facilities, and the ones available weren’t well-maintained. Overall, it felt neglected and not worth the visit. Definitely needs better care and attention.

Very dirty and the boardwalk isn’t safe at all. Missing planks. Be careful where you walk. We did get to see sea lions though, so obviously still worth it

SEA LIONS!!! Go early afternoon when the fisherman are cleaning their catches and they will go nuts. The $1.50 ceviche by the beach is to die for. Tons of gulls and also a very pretty beach. The piers are nice. Maybe 100 commercial fishing boats used from here, and we found it very interesting to watch the fisherman launch and retrieve them using the crane at the end of the pier. The restaurants are good, parking is easy, and it's like 5 minutes from valparaiiso. We went twice.

All of this has come together so that its immediate surroundings have been declared a Typical Zone and the Church has been declared a National Monument in 1971. With the earthquake of 2010, the Church, which already had significant deterioration, suffered new damage, including the front wall separating from the rest of the Church and the tower being left with numerous cracks. Valparaiso, situated in Valparaiso Bay between Point Concon and Point Angeles, is the principal port of Chile. The bay is well sheltered, except from N or NW'ly winds during the winter season which leaves shipping exposed, although the breakwater provides shelter for the wharves and for the small anchorage area. Winds from the third quadrant can cause problems in the afternoon for vessels berthing or sailing. The harbour is protected by a breakwater that is used primarily by the Chilean Navy. Some guys at reception were a little bit rude, and they also make you wait a lot to help you. Breakfast was expensive but a kind of all you can eat service. Also they charge you much more than announced in their web site, they use different kind of excuses such as a lower Chilean peso rate (950 instead of 980), 3% extra for credit card, and more things like that. This is mainly why I lowered so much my rate. Sorry, but you are stealing money, that's not fair play.

~Backpacking on a budget through South America~ We loved the vibe and location of the hostel. The room was good enough. A lot of locations to chill and a nice kitchen area. That said, the staff weren't so friendly and we didn't get the rule why we had to pay in dollars or with credit card. The only place during our visit in to charge extra for using local currency
Axel B — Google review
The hostel was okayish. Nothing special and a bit oversold on the pictures on Booking. The location is great and the bathroom reasonably clean. On the downside, the staff was a bit having a great time together but didn't made the guests feel so included or welcome, in my feeling at least. PAYMENT: you can either pay in USD or CLP. In CLP, they will tell you that you have to pay the VAT (19%) and that's fair it's the law. However, you can pay in USD and avoid the Vat (it's also the law). They will also tell you that their rate for USD is not great (about 5% worse than mid market) but who cares, it's still better than the 19% VAT. So, pay in USD if you have a good travel card.
Al_ _ — Google review
I booked a 7-night stay at this hostel over New Year’s for CLP 307,732.00, but my experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. I’ll admit upfront: I made the mistake of not remembering a small note about their special New Year cancellation policy when I booked months ago. However, when I canceled my reservation well in advance, I received no warning, pop-up, or reminder that I was forfeiting the entire payment. This oversight could have been prevented with better communication, but instead, I was left with no booking and no money. I reached out to the hostel, explained the situation, and made every effort to come to a fair agreement. I even requested to have my original booking reinstated, as I’ve already paid in full and wasn’t asking for anything extra. Despite my polite requests, they flat-out refused to help in any way. Their response made it clear they don’t care about their guests or the fact that this is a significant amount of money for most people. Mistakes happen, and I was more than willing to meet them halfway, but their complete lack of empathy or willingness to find a fair resolution was appalling. If you value fair treatment and customer service, avoid this hostel at all costs. They’ll take your money without a second thought, show no respect for the effort you’ve made to resolve an issue, and leave you high and dry. One star is generous, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

The location was perfect, right in the heart of the tourist area, making it easy to explore the city. Breakfast was delicious with a wide variety of options, including fresh bread, juice, and eggs. You can enjoy this on the terrace. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, taking the time to provide us with recommendations and even writing them down. Overall, we had a great stay and would recommend this B&B for its charm, views, and excellent service. The only issue with the old house was the maintenance of our bathroom window, it was quite loose and nearly fell off.

+ The terrace is fantastic. The location is the best for Valparaiso. The breakfast is good - The rooms are very shabby and need of much TLC One of the nights we stayed a member of staff was having a party passed midnight in the communal areas. One of the rooms was a bit damp and the showers were weak. No luggage room. They ask you leave your luggage I the communal area of reception

Nice location and cool staff. The place is in the heart of the street art center, uphill. Breakfast is solid, the terrace is cool. But: beacause it is a very old house (Altbau with high ceilings, it is very noisy, especially when your room is next to the kitchen at the first floor. The shared bathrooms are... well, let‘s just say, a renovation would be good. And they are next to the kitchen, so choose your bathroom time wisely. 😊 There is potential for more. Most annoying is the noise, especially in the night, because you hear everything what is going on in front of your door and at the second floor. Yes, it is a hostel. Hostels are social places and noisy. Bring the best earplugs you can buy and you will enjoy this place.

I would totally recommend! Friendly guides, plenty of interesting stories, cute dogs. Do not miss this programme if you visit Valparaíso. Also the homemade alfajores were the best I've tried. ;) /Greetings from Hungary!/

We did two tours with this company and honestly, we thought it was an amazing way to discover the city. The guides were super engaging and had so much to share. The first tour we did was the Valparaiso highlights. That one was our favorite because it focused a lot on street art and muralism. Our guide, Camilo, was really passionate about art and gave us tons of insight. So yeah, that tour was awesome. We liked it so much that we signed up for the Offbeat tour the next day, which takes you to spots where tourists don’t usually go. That was super interesting too. We had Camilo and Felipe together for that one, and both of them were fantastic. Camilo’s real gift is the way he talks about history and politics — and somehow makes it fascinating. For three hours straight, we were totally hooked. So yeah, both tours were amazing. We absolutely recommend them.

I'm so glad we explored Valparaíso with Camilo and Felipe from Tours 4 Tips. They provided local insight and perspective on history, art, politics and culture as we wandered the streets on the highlights tour. It made me want to explore the big city more! If we had more time, I would have loved to do the morning tour too as it sounded so interesting!

My wife and I recently joined the 1pm tour with Camilo. There was another family of 3 with us so it made for a very small group, which is typical during these winter months. This tour was awesome and it can be attributed to our tour guide. He's been doing this for many years and it never felt like he was just going through the motions - Camilo was enthusiastic, passionate and very knowledgeable about the city and of Chile's history. He answered all of our questions and gave us suggestions for other things to do, see and eat and provided pointers for keeping safe. We took several free walking tours during our three weeks in Chile and Peru and this one was our favorite. Highly recommended!

Did this tour in Valparaíso and Santiago. Can highly recommend it! Very nice, motivated and professional tour guides, lots of additional background information. There is a highlights tour and another one which focuses on the not so prominent places (in Valparaíso e.g. Port neighborhood and a funny rollercoaster like bus ride). If you can only do one, do this one! Our guides Jocelyn and Valentina were great!
Clem C — Google review
Felipe (and Margarita) were the best tour guides of the city! We learned so much about this city, it’s history, architecture, and street art. We greatly enjoyed the experience and got amazing recommendations from Felipe at the end of the tour. It was perfectly paced for all members of the group and we made many stops without rushing around!!

Nice beach but very busy.

We were staying in a friend's apartment for a week. Lovely walk out on the headland as well as walking along to to Algarrobo for the cafes. We even had an earth tremor - no extra charge. The beach is a bit noisy after late morning but it's all very friendly.

it is a small beach but with a lot of environment to explore, there is a forest beside and if you go trough the left side of it, you will discover a beatiful place with a huge rock in the sea, a cathedral of stone, some others you can climb, i foud a perfect spot to place my yoga mat and melt with the magic of this place, 100%

We had a little work activity over there and it was beautiful. The place is perfect for this time and weather: quiet, clean and cozy.

Amazing beach. Water is freezing though, even during summer but I got in anyway! It was irresistible. There's beauty all around it.

This is a really nice beach, the water is extremely cold but apparently that is everywhere in chile
Luisa V — Google review
Very small beach but, nice one with canopy, boating and for other beach games.

Located in the El Almendral section of Valparaiso, Arco Británico is a striking monument on Avenida Brasil. It was gifted to the city by the British Colony in 1910 to commemorate Chile's centenary of independence. Designed by French architect Alfredo Azancot, it features Italian marble and is guarded by a British Victorian Lion and four individuals who fought in the Chilean Independence War.
Donated to the town by the British in 1910 to mark the centenary of Chile's independence. The Arc was covered in marble from Italy, guarded by a British Victorian Lion and four Britons who participated in the Chilean Independence War. Visited by QE2 and Prince Charles. Now sit on Av.Brasil. All fenced and planted with roses.

If you are in the area, stop by and see. Otherwise I wouldn’t go out of my way. It’s a monument to British influence in Chile. Britain contributed to Chile’s independence from Spain. It’s close to the Valparaiso Cathedral and on the bus routes. No tickets, no wait. There is a fence around it, but the gate is open.

This is a lovely arch, but it’s not very well kept, which is a shame, as its one of the few places built by the English. If they removed the graffiti it would be really nice. The park itself is lovely. Its worth a visit if you are in Valparaiso.

At the end of the day it's just a gate.

Could become beautiful if the locals just cleaned the area

Wonderful! Let us transport back to the pre-first world war of 1910, with British imperial power, influence and arrogance at its apex........ “Lord Buckingham: I say Carothers, these chilly people aren’t so bad. Let’s make them a gift. A cricket ground perhaps? Carothers: Sir, we didn’t exactly conquer the Chileans, so they don’t play cricket. May I suggest something useful, such as a school or a hospital? Lord Buckingham: Good lord, what are you thinking about Carothers? What they really need is a damned good statue of Queen Victoria. Carothers: Sorry sir, she died a few years ago. Lord Buckingham: Very well, build a Marble Arch, with a lion, that will make the natives happy.” Chile, we love you,🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧
