Points of Interest & Landmarks
Caleta Portales is a beautiful sandy beach with stunning sunset views and plenty of restaurants and cafes to enjoy. In addition, there is a fish market nearby that attracts sea lions for food scraps.
Honestly, we pulled up to this spot on our tour, and I thought, "Oh, a fish market. Okay." We were shown a couple of seals way off in the distance, and, well, let's just say I wasn't exactly blown away. I was thinking, "Is that it?" Then, out of absolute nowhere, it happened. It was like a scene from a nature documentary, but right in front of us! Suddenly, a whole army of seals started marching up the beach. I mean, marching. They were coming from everywhere, just surging onto the sand, all headed towards the discarded fish from the market. My jaw literally dropped. It was incredible! We were so close, we could hear them snorting and jostling each other. The sheer number of them, and how quickly they appeared, was just mind-blowing. It went from "meh" to "HOLY COW!" in a matter of seconds. It was one of those travel moments you never forget. You go somewhere thinking it's just a quick stop, and then you witness something truly amazing. I was completely and utterly surprised, and I'm so glad we got to see it. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
Piyush P — Google review
Super fun! Lots of pelicans and super chonky sea lions who get fed fish all day! Fish shops are fun to visit
Brett S — Google review
The beach at Playa Caleta Portales was disappointing. It was very crowded, making it hard to relax or find a peaceful spot. The cleanliness is a big issue—trash was scattered everywhere, and there didn’t seem to be enough bins. The water didn’t look very clean either, which was off-putting. There were also limited facilities, and the ones available weren’t well-maintained. Overall, it felt neglected and not worth the visit. Definitely needs better care and attention.
Alex B — Google review
Very dirty and the boardwalk isn’t safe at all. Missing planks. Be careful where you walk. We did get to see sea lions though, so obviously still worth it
Danielle P — Google review
in total i saw three sea lions, not a lot the market and the area around smells really really strong and looks dirty the beach view was pretty nice if u really have nothing to do in valparaiso, come by, otherwise don’t waste your time to come here extra
Inktrap — Google review
Nice beach to see the sunset. Easy to get there by public transport and cars. There are many sea food restaurants in front of the beach. Also you may find some vendors on the beach selling Chilean sweets, drinks, ice cream, etc. Always keep an eye on your belongings.
Moises V — Google review
You can't swim but is beautiful just to be in the beach
Isidora J — Google review
SEA LIONS!!! Go early afternoon when the fisherman are cleaning their catches and they will go nuts. The $1.50 ceviche by the beach is to die for. Tons of gulls and also a very pretty beach. The piers are nice. Maybe 100 commercial fishing boats used from here, and we found it very interesting to watch the fisherman launch and retrieve them using the crane at the end of the pier. The restaurants are good, parking is easy, and it's like 5 minutes from valparaiiso. We went twice.

Muelle Prat is a vibrant waterfront promenade at the heart of Valparaiso's port area. It offers a lively atmosphere with fishermen bringing in their catch, street vendors selling Chilean snacks, and artists capturing scenic bay views. Visitors can take boat tours from the pier to see the city's colorful hillside constructions and historic buildings.
Muelle Prat is a very busy waterfront which has souvenirs, fishing, private and group tours of the bay on boat, and the aquarium. There is a sign painted that shows the prices for a group tour and a private tour. It was 5000 pesos/person when I went in June 2025. Best to go when there is a crowd to be able to get on a group tour.

Must visit places. Historical place to see and worth visiting once in a lifetime.
Adathottil J — Google review
A piece of history, still untouched! A totally must do! Learn a bit about Chilean history and one of it's most important heroes. On the port you can go around the bay in one of the of the passenger boats and take amazing pics of the bay and the cargo ship. Several souvenir shops with a variety of items for you to take to family and friends. "El bote Salvavidas" great restaurant with a great variety of Chilean and International dishes at water's edge with a truly amazing view of the port. On same aerea you can also find the newest addition to this picturesque site "Valparaiso Aquarium" although small still gives a good idea of the fish and shellfish of Valparaiso and Chilean ocean habitat. Very affordable entrance fee and each small group with their own Aquarium tourguide ( with heavy Venezuelan accent , obvious reflection of the changes of times and how diverse Chile has become regarding it's ethnicity)

This is a spot that it’s a must, you will see the real movement in a big port and the typical chilean port attitude “la picardia porteña” in Valparaiso. Take a boat ride per 30 minutes to be near to the big ships and buy handicrafts here. But be careful about thieves in this zone.
Viaja G — Google review
If you are looking the best place to see the local boats, here it is! A sailor and local place! I would definitely recommend this place. You can ask for tours also and check for restaurants.

Mercado El Cardonal

Market

Mercado El Cardonal is a bustling historic market in Valparaiso, offering a vibrant array of locally sourced fruits, vegetables, and seafood. Housed in a charming building reflecting the city's European influences, it provides an authentic glimpse into daily life in Chile. The market is known for its chaotic and photogenic atmosphere, with vendors selling goods at cheaper prices than other parts of Valparaiso.
Cute little market with tons of fruits and vegetables both indoors and outdoors. Prices are all more or less the same at every stall but look around for quality items.

good place to try local cuisine. a little short open. luckily we got food even after most places were closed. :)

Great place for an affordable delicious typical Valparaíso meal. If you are living or staying in Valparaíso for a while this is the perfect place to get fresh veggies and fruit. Inside you can also find cheese, goat cheese, nuts and dried fruits
Javiera M — Google review

Frank H — Google review
Be very wary of the restaurants on the 2nd floor. The food is okay but they will make you feel really uncomfortable and pressure you into their restaurants and try to make you order something expensive, especially if you look like a tourist and speak limited Spanish.
Carina E — Google review
There are some good restaurants here with delisious traditional dishes, but are hidden on the first floor, the groundfloor is amarket. You must go with a local to find the good ones, otherwise if u don't know which is the good restaurant you can get stomach sick
Tintero M — Google review
It is a good market with a variety of vegetables and fruits. Also a big display of groceries and things for the daily use in your home. The reason I gave 4 stars was because they don't let you choose your products (fruits and vegetables), and if you confronted them about it, they react very violently. We are the customers, hence we have the right to choose our own products.
Carlcosta — Google review
I love bustling markets and this one did not dissapoint. Tons of fruits and vegetables and spices. If you walk here from the main tourist areas you can take a path to see the giant four season murals.

Park
Quinta Vergara is a stunning park in Vina del Mar, featuring a Venetian Gothic palace, an art museum, and an impressive amphitheater where performances are held. The park is located to the south, surrounded by the city's traditional mansions and a commercial district centered on Plaza Vergara. Every January, classical music concerts take place in the huge outdoor amphitheater within Parque Quinta Vergara.
Impressively beautiful park! The palace is gorgeous and the animal-shaped hedges are very cute.

Beautiful park surrounding the palace and venue. There are a couple of hiking trails following a stream of water with a beautiful urban wetland restored and protected by organized neighbors
Javiera M — Google review
It is a beautiful and serene place. The theatre is huge and I would love to be here during the Viña del Mar festival. It is one of the biggest events they say. There were so many different and unique things being sold here. I wanted to purchase everything. The best part was the peaceful and green garden where people sat and enjoyed with their loved ones.
Jagmohan M — Google review
Beautiful place to visit. They offer free tours in several languages. I recommend it to everyone! There are always special exhibits and the one I saw was stunning!

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the vibrant city of Viña del Mar, the Museo de Arqueología e Historia Francisco Fonck is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and culture lovers alike. This charming museum features an impressive collection of artifacts that highlight local heritage, including a striking 500-year-old Moai statue from Easter Island, which stands sentinel at its entrance.
Excellent museum! Superior displays of Pacific and American indigenous cultures. Good descriptions, some in English. A couple of the electronic displays were out of order, but that didn’t detract from the overall experience. No description or story with the trophy heads. As a major attraction to the museum that would have been a plus. Upstairs they have a very nice natural history display. Kids will enjoy all the creatures. It’s a small museum, but packed with excitement.
Paul — Google review
I didn't go inside the museum but this review is for the original Easter Island statue that is majestically exhibited outside the museum. Since childhood I have been intrigued by Easter Island and its world renowned sculptures. It was wonderful to actually see an original statue albeit not on Easter Island but appropriately in front of a Museum showcasing the archeological wonders of Chile.
Peter K — Google review
This is a smallish museum in an old and quaint building. The building itself has wonderful wood stair with its balusters and banisters. The displays of the artifacts on the first floor are marvelous and take you through the archaeological regions of Chile. On the second floor you will find displays of wildlife. If you are nearby, you should visit. F Y I you should Park a couple of blocks away.
Raymond A — Google review
We came to see the Moai (Easter Island stone statue) who guards this museum. Loved all the creative artifacts from cultures throughout Chile and South America. There are some interesting stuffed and preserved animals whichsre worth a look. :) The $4.50 entrance fee well worth it!
LS S — Google review
This is a magic place where you can find one of the most known legacies of the mankind, of course, located in Chile, at its nature,, even not in the original site. An authentic Statue from Rapa Nui Island( old Chilean name) Easter Island is the main guard of the Museum. In the left side of the Entrance, it is exposed a second piece of stone, a magnificent model, sculpture 10000 years old. The building itself is a heritage landmark, very suitable for its actual function and destination.
Flavius — Google review
Nice displays but small rooms that get crowded when tour busses arrive. It was a great place to visit before we went to Easter Island.

Restaurant
Restaurante Bote Salvavidas is located in the busy port of Valparaiso, with a beautiful view over the harbour. The menu features seafood from the nearby fishing village, including salmon with prawn sauce. The restaurant has been in operation for more than 60 years and offers excellent service and food.
Excellent food and service. We the “congrio grillado” which was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended. Great service and delicious dessert (leche asada)
James — Google review
Bote Salvavidas is the only restaurant directly adjacent to the port, making it a busy spot for locals and tourists. It closes at five in the afternoon every day catering to a lunch crowd. During the weekends it is recommended you book a table or be ready to wait in line for twenty minutes to half an hour. The seating processes for walk-ins is excruciatingly slow due to the COVID restrictions and the need to register every person that enters the restaurant. The menu is simple and caters to grilled and fried fish with classics including caldillo de congrio and machas parmesanas. The interior is large with a row of tables next to a balcony offering great views of the port. The service is efficient, friendly but frenetic. There is a need to turn over as many tables as possible. The caldillo de congrio (12,750 pesos) was good but lacked seasoning, while the grilled salmon (10,990 pesos) was aided by a choice of sauces from the menu.
Alain P — Google review
I had a nice lunch here with a Kuntzmann beer. A convenient location that is bustling from boating activity straight over the balcony

Restorán Capri is a popular spot in Valparaiso, known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant offers a variety of Chilean dishes, including fresh seafood platters and local specialties like seafood stew and crab. Visitors can enjoy live music while savoring their meals, creating a festive dining experience. The cozy environment makes it a favorite among locals for lunch or dinner. Guests also appreciate the complimentary bread with sofrito that accompanies every table's meal.
Authentic Chilean restaurant! Great ambience and excellent service and hospitality by Mr. Joaquin . To top it all food was delicious and fantastic

Last day in Valparaiso for AKN, but he could not miss the opportunity to go to a Restaurant called ‘Capri’ since he is Italian. Good vibes but not average service. While our volunteer was choosing the plate, one waiter came and approached him saying ‘Try to listen to what I say to the table behind, so I don’t need to repeat it twice’. It never happened before that AKN had to do something like this. Good food anyway

Best place to be if you want where all the locals go. The place is always packed with locals grabbing a bite, with local musicians playing songs about Valparaiso - with great food and ambience. We got pastel de jaiba (crab cake, DONT MISS IT), caldo de mariscos (seafood soup - not in the picture), and the palta reina (avocado salad). Amazing quality and very generous servings.
Stella Y — Google review
An excellent restaurant to stop by if you are craving authentic Chilean food in Valparaiso! I go the cheese empanada (highly recommend) and the avocado shrimp salad which paired well. My friend got the salmon with fries and rice and it was delicious as well. The ambiance of the interior was also very warm and welcoming. The Chilean music they played was also Chilean and a nice welcome to Chile’s culture!
Mariel C — Google review
Stumbled into this place on a cold rainy day and received a warm welcome. Some musicians were singing and serenading the crowd and it was so festive. We ate the seafood platter that had two portions of a lot of different sea food - ceviche, mussels, prawns, crab cakes and more. It was really fresh and delicious. The drinks were also nice. Overall, a good option to eat in Valpo if you're around Plaza Sotomayor :)
Chica N — Google review
Very cozy and home environment. If u r looking for place where locals go for lunch/dinner, Capri is the place to be. Has a lot of local dishes that tastes pretty fresh. I ordered the seafood stew which was exquisite with fresh mussels and fish. My companion ordered the crab which was a little salty to her liking but still had great flavour. Every table gets a complimentary bowl of bread with sofrito.
Derek X — Google review
Overpriced. My dish was bland and looked nothing like the photos posted by previous guests (was their normal cook on vacation?). The owner came buy and asked how I like things. When I told him the dish wasn't very good, he countered that they have some of the best seafood in town and walked away! The only part I liked about the place was the service. Great waiters- very friendly and helpful.

Hamburger restaurant
La Joya Sanguches is a delightful establishment that offers live music, an inviting atmosphere in the evenings, and ample seating. The prices are fair and reflect the quality of the food and drinks. What sets this place apart is its unique location, which showcases the owner's dedication to revitalizing Valparaiso's less-traveled streets. Their burgers are truly exceptional, with imaginative combinations that are both mouthwatering and structurally sound. The Passion fruit sauce option is particularly outstanding.
Highly recommended beer when is available, however you have to go with the vision that they are not used to foreigners or having empathy for people who get dizzy or who cannot climb stairs... I recommend tasting the trio-burger which is a sampling of three
CuCoach D — Google review
I’ll just start with the food is very presentable but not in any way tasty. Feel free to look at my other 230 reviews to know i don’t trash restaurants on here for fun. I give completely honest reviews. The vibe is good, the service is ok if you count your server leaving before your food gets out. The food is a train wreck. Imagine really good looking burgers just not being good. Imagine being told bacon and cheddar on your fries to have a sloppy plate of pulled pork which I assume came out of a crock pot and basically mashed potatoes. Imagine going to the pizza place next door when you leave because you were so unsatisfied but didn’t want to be disrespectful. There’s better places to go, there has to be. I wish i could steer you in the right direction.
Danny — Google review
We went here 2 nights during our stay and it say we were disappointed would be an understatement. The first night we had ordered a chicken burger and a beef burger to then be told they were out of chicken. About 10 minutes later they then told us that they also didn’t have the onion rings for the beef burger. We then came back the other night to also be told that another item was sold out despite us being one of the first tables of the night. Now onto the food, the beef burger was nice however you get very few chips and the chicken we had ordered on the second night had come out raw. We weren’t given any apologies and nothing was said after they took away our food so we had to ask if we could leave or if we had to pay for the drinks. Decided to go to the pizza place on the other nights which is much better and definitely worth the price

5 stars well-deserved. Burgers are one of a kind - creative, delicious and not falling apart. Fries are good as well. The roof top terrace is cosy and the friendliness and service idea of the staff great. Recommended.

Liked it! There was live music, great environment at night and enough tables (we arrived at 9pm). Probably one of the best burgers I've tried so far. The one with Passion fruit sauce was incredible 🤤 The music was a bit too loud to my taste but the place has a good vibe and a nice terrace. I'd definitely come back. Staff was attentive and welcoming :)

The sandwiches / burgers are good and creative, good ingredients and nicely done. the place is clean and comfortable. They took a long time in processing orders if you are in a big group, we had an issue with desserts. We made a dessert choice when we arrived and 2 hours later they would not bring it. Once we had asked them twice about desserts because we had to leave, they confessed they did not have more of those desserts and request that we choose something else from the menu. Once we made new choices, again taking long to respond on their side, the lady that was in charge brought the originally ordered desserts in a very rude way and did not apologise. We had to cancel the new orders ourselves with the waiter who was also very confused at this point. Unnecessary bad service for a place like this with such potential.

Expatriates residing in the western region decided to venture to the renowned establishment situated conveniently close by. This popular venue consistently attracts a large crowd, which is an encouraging indication of its quality. They opted for the classic burger and accompanying fried potatoes, and were pleased with their choice. The bread utilized was exceptionally flavorful, while the meat exhibited freshness and proper cooking techniques, resulting in an overall enjoyable taste experience. The meal also remained satisfying even when taken away for consumption elsewhere.
This place is great, the gin is awesome and lots of fantastic vegan options. Don't miss the patatas bravas (just ask for the romesco sauce) they even have vegan croquettes!

I was maybe a little old for the music, but the vibe was excellent, the "Amanostyle" gin cocktail awesome, and the food generous (if you're on your own, opt for Bravitas, not Bravas 😉!!!

Another amazing restaurant in the heart of Viña. The sheer number of different gin & tonics to try would keep me coming back for months! So far I've tried one with basil and one with rosemary, both excellent. And the special Chilean tonic water they use is particularly refreshing. Beer aficionados will love the large variety of beers on tap. When my husband couldn't decide what beer to choose, the waiter ran off and came back a few minutes later with six tiny glasses of beers he could try before making a final decision. As if that weren't enough, they have more than 20 burgers with everything from cheddar, brie and blue cheese to arugula, fried eggs and even pastel de choclo on top. The wait staff are wonderful, the bartenders top notch and the ambience fun and bustling. The only thing that would improve this place would be if they had gluten free buns for their burgers.

We are expats living in the ponientes area and we decided to try this famous place that is pretty close to tus. It is always crowded and that was already a good sign. We ordered the classic burger to go and fried potatoes. The bread they use is very tasty, the meat was fresh and cook well and the taste overall was very good. It traveled well and we enjoyed it very much. We will definitely go back. Quality Price 7/10

Wonderful! Try a different burger, I did: tuna w wasabi mayo and avocado. Only Shiso leaves were missing, otherwise perfect!
