Neighborhoods
Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion are bohemian neighborhoods in Valparaiso, Chile, offering a relaxed atmosphere for daytime strolls and unforgettable sunsets. The area is filled with lively cafes, public squares, and historic cobbled streets that blend timeless charms with contemporary creativity.
I had a wonderful time exploring Cerro Alegre in Valparaíso. This vibrant hillside neighborhood is known for its colorful street art, charming architecture, and winding alleyways. The mix of murals and old buildings gives it a unique character, reflecting Valparaíso's artistic and bohemian spirit. Historically, the area became popular in the late 19th century as European immigrants settled here, shaping its eclectic style. Tours usually bring people here but you can just stroll around yourselves. Also one of the safer areas in town.

This beautiful hill located in Valparaiso offers unique architecture that isn't typically seen in other cities around the world, and offers incredible street art that can be seen while walking through most streets, hidden alleys and winding staircases. A must-see for anyone visiting Chile.
Freddy C — Google review
We ordered tuna and beef steak. The tuna was excellent. Respect to the chef because the beef steak was prepared according to art but the quality of the meat was good for a goulash. The wine was wonderful.

Historical landmark
Plaza Sotomayor is a bustling square in Valparaiso, flanked by the Chilean navy headquarters and a central memorial honoring naval heroes. The surrounding area includes the commercial quarter with its port works, warehouses, banks, and shopping center. Adjacent to the bay are administrative buildings grouped around the plaza. The lower part of the city also features the cathedral, parks, boulevards, theaters, cafes, and colonial buildings like the church of La Matriz.
Plaza Sotomayor is a nice place to walk around, see the monument, and enjoy the old buildings nearby. Everything is close, the port, the pier, and some good cafés where you can relax and have a coffee. It can get a bit crowded, so keep an eye on your things. Overall, a nice and interesting spot to visit in the city.
Khumoyun A — Google review
Busy square surrounded by some interesting, historic buildings. Popular place to meet for guided walks. Beware, keep safe, being local advice.
MARK R — Google review
Plaza Santa Maya is a must-visit walk through spot in Valparaíso! It’s beautifully nestled among some important historical buildings and sits right at the base of a couple of the city’s iconic cable cars. From here, you can walk along the waterfront, hop on a boat, or just take in the view. When I visited on a Saturday, there was a charming little craft fair happening, adding even more color and life to the plaza. It’s picturesque, full of character, and a perfect place to snap some great photos. Definitely a gemstone of Valparaíso. Follow me on TikTok for more travel finds! Sage0.x

The city center.. beautiful old colonial building around the plaza. Use the funicular ride to go up the hill. Nice area to explore. Mall are around the plaza, with foodcourt and toilet. Its quite crowded on the afternoon and a nice place to hang around.
Reyner G — Google review
Plaza Sotomayor is the main square of Valparaíso and a great starting point to explore the city. It’s home to the impressive blue Naval Headquarters building and the Monument to the Heroes of Iquique, which honors Chilean sailors. Surrounded by historic architecture and close to the port, the plaza combines history, culture, and daily local life. A must-see landmark before taking the funiculars up to the colorful hills.
Vakhtang J — Google review
Was ok but no where to park and the plaza is not like the typical plazas we’ve visited where you can grab a bench and relax. It was in the middle of two busy, busy streets.
Kevin F — Google review
When the artisanal market "Victoria Porteña" is there you can see some of the best local art made by porteños themselves such as fine stone jewellery, silk-screen printing, wood-cut printing, wooden puzzles, knitted clothing among others. You can also get great food in the local restaurants around the plaza and visit Muelle Prat for a boat ride. Recently, works have been announced for this place by the city so it could be closed in the near future

La Sebastiana, located in Valparaiso, is a house with a rich history. Originally built for Sebastian Callao and later finished by the renowned poet Pablo Neruda, it became one of three homes owned by him. This red and blue house was declared a National Monument in 2011 and now operates as a museum showcasing Neruda's world through various collectibles.
La Sebastiana de Valparaíso, what an experience, a whole Universe inside, a legacy for Valparaíso and for all Chile ! As an architect, I admit I had no expectations regarding the visit of Pablo Neruda's house. Despite the fact that so reviews here for this amazing landmark of Valparaíso are moderate, I will share my impressions after an impressive immersion into an intimate universe of Pablo Neruda's life. A balance between the architecture of Gaudi's residencial's work is suitable for everyone. The house itself is talking about daily routine of Neruda, as well as an entire atmosphere of his circle of friends, jokes, moments of joy and happiness around the table or near the chimney in living room. Colours and textures, windows and doors, floors and ceilings, ceramics and furniture, everything is made with love for life! If is worth the effort to get here for a visit? Every minute of it! You will be be highly rewarded with great feelings and sensations, of course, if you are that kind of traditional traveler, with respect for the past and for the mankind heritage!

Plaza Echaurren is a unique spot that offers a glimpse into the city's social history. It's known for its colorful and vibrant atmosphere, making it a must-visit for those seeking an authentic local experience. However, visitors are advised to exercise caution, especially at night, and be mindful of their belongings. The place holds a fascinating history and is famous for the hats hanging behind the bar, said to be collected from unsuspecting patrons who doze off while enjoying their drinks.
Very eclectic and full of life.

Alexander L — Google review
It's a historic place, but it could be dangerous.
Alexander G — Google review
Public square very colorful. It's a must if you're looking for the local experience. If you are a tourist you should not visit at night and always be careful with your possesions.
Javiera M — Google review
Very dirty place with strange people, drunk and drug addicts. Walk by fast, don't talk to anyone and pay special attention at nights, because the same addicts are robbing you over and over again. Still one of the oldest places in Valparaiso and nothing ever happened to me, but anyways not my favorite place in the city 😂
Daniel — Google review
Impressive buildings which reminds me when I went to La Habana. Very classic. This part of town will take you back to the city origins, when Valparaíso was nothing but a port, a church, a square and some stores. I mean there's not much to do here, honestly there's a couples of cafes, some stores and that's it however the place is full of history, you can see in the locals eyes, in the way they live, etc. There are ruins of old buildings that once were full of life. Abandoned brothels, markets really get you in sync with that forgotten Valparaíso. So, yes this area is poetic and nostalgic for the porteños, always reminding them those good old times when Valpo was the pearl of the Pacific. One piece of advice for tourists: when visting these type of places always carry your belongings close to you. Travel light at al times since these places are well known for muggings and thefts. You'll be fine as long as you don't draw too much attention. I've been there a lot of time and the best thing to do is just feel the place and act normal, a couple of pics here and there and keep going. It's a pity to end a review like this but that the way it is.
Lucas P — Google review
Cafe shop located in the cultural center in Valparaiso. It's got coffee and sandwiches. The food and coffee is mediocre, but definitely stop and grab some water if you're on a tour.
Lily E — Google review
It may look like a great sightseeing place, but be careful. It's a very sketchy area. Dirty, dangeours and unsafe. Avoid plaza Echaurren.

Baburizza Palace, a stunning mansion from the early 1900s, is a must-see in Valparaiso. Named after Croatian businessman Pascal Baburizza, this opulent building boasts eclectic art-nouveau architecture with beautiful woodwork, balconies, and small turrets. Once home to prominent figures like Ottorino Zanelli and Pascual Baburizza, the palace now houses the Museum of Fine Arts.
A fascinating place. Palacio Baburizza gives a great glimpse into how a Chilean oligarch lived in the early 20th century, with elegance, taste, and attention to every detail. The mansion is beautifully preserved, with impressive interiors, furniture, and artwork. You can really feel the atmosphere of that era. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Chile’s history and culture.
Khumoyun A — Google review
Worth the cheap entry fee. Not my fave art but it a beautiful space and interior and one of the docents, Matilde? Miranda? is LOVELY. We had a wonderful conversation as I wandered the spacious museum. I went soon after it opened about 10:30am but would recommend going later as the AM fog obliterates any views from the palace and windows. The fog lifts early afternoon. English explanation at the entry but not thought out. Very nice on-site café as well with good empanadas and carrot cake cookies! Friendly staff and I was happy I could charge my phone.
Jennifer S — Google review
Superb art museum located in an early 20th century art nouveau styled mansion. The home is beautiful and the quality of the paintings is astounding. The collection originates mostly from Europe, but has plenty of Chilean works as well. Nice cafe and clean bathroom, too. This is a must see visit in Valparaiso.
Paul — Google review
Amazing art museum and the palacio itself! Beautiful works, well kept. Much better than national art museum in Santiago! Take it slow and wander around to explore all the nooks. Permanent exhibition is large and is only 3000 pesos, and the temporary exhibition in the basement is free.
Maria E — Google review
Free entry on Sunday. The Museum is in a historic mansion and is adjacent to Mirador Paseo Yugoslavo and is easily reached via the Ascensor El Persal. There are street performers and the area is designated a local artisans market area. The art in the museum is focused on native Chilean artists and has many works that reflect the early years of Valparaiso.
Ross M — Google review
Very beautiful art gallery, prices are fair. I think it's a about 4000 Pesos for foreigners and less than 1000 for locals. The oil paintings where astonishing and varied in size. I marveled for over one hour in incredulity. There's also many explanations in Spanish. The gallery features some European artists as well as many Chilean ones. The bathroom could be cleaner and the locks on the doors repaired. I had to hold the door shut while doing my business. Also the tours with a large group of people were a little annoying as you could sometimes not enter a room because it was thus crowded. I therefore suggest minimizing the size of the group. However, definitely worth a visit if you're in Valparaíso.
- - — Google review
Officially, the museum was open at 2.10pm, but the staff obviously didn't feel like working and simply didn't let people in, claiming it wouldn't open until 3pm. Everyone should therefore think twice about going there. But it seems typical for Chile...
Christian L — Google review
Beautiful old mansion overlooking the city that has been turned into a fine art museum. The art is has works from local and European artists, mostly French. Its quite a nice collection and is worth a visit. There are also two temporary exhibits free of charge that you can take a look. When I was there, the exhibits were photos of Chile and of tattoos.
