Himeji Castle, also known as Shirasagi-jo (White Egret Castle), is an iconic fortress with a white facade, towers, moats, and cherry trees. Its history dates back to the 14th century when the first castle was established on the site. The present-day castle was initiated by warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1581 and later expanded and remodeled to attain its grand scale.
This place is definitely worth the visit. Far different and more authentic than other castles that we have visited in Japan, the White Crane Castle remains largely in its original form. It is stunningly beautiful, and very well preserved. I strongly recommend taking the option for the limited access additional tour, where you get to see some other areas of the castle. The adjoining gardens were also very nice. Highly recommend going early, as this is a very popular location. Also - strongly recommend booking online to avoid the lineups.

It is one of the most visited monuments in the country. But entry was surprisingly smooth even without any advance booking. There are non named ticket counters, where you can buy tickets easily. I bought the combo ticket of the castle and the Kokoen garden. The parts to cover are the main keep, the west bailey and the Sannomaru plaza. The main keep is the iconic structure and was largely used for defense. There are descriptions available in the castle which makes it easier to understand. Sannomaru plaza is where you can take a clear close up picture of the main keep. Do not miss the west bailey or nishinomaru. This is a group of buildings and gardens which served as the residence of Senhime, the daughter of a Shogun.

Himeji Castle was amazing. It is best to visit in the morning getting as much natural light as possible. It is possible to do a trip to Himeji as well as going further to Hiroshima on the same day using the Shinkansen. Be warn it will be an early morning to do both trips in a day. From Himeji Train Station it is an easy 10-15 minute walk to the castle grounds. There are many shops and places to grab a quick breakfast or lunch depending what time of the day you arrive. Wear comfortable shoes since it's a gradual incline to the main castle keep. Be very aware you will have to climb steep staircases once inside the castle. We recommend bringing portable rechargeable fans, because you will sweat climbing the stairs. The views are very beautiful from the top. This excursion can be done in under 4 hours from the train station, up to the castle, and back to go to the next destination.

Amazing historic castle. Do not miss this one- very beautiful and the grounds are just as pretty. I went right at opening and there were no crowds but as I was leaving it was starting to get busier so go earlier to avoid them. Spend the extra 50 yen when buying your ticket online to get access to the gardens as it’s well maintained and beautiful, with koi fish in many of the ponds! One of the highlights of my Japan trip.

★★★★★ | An Absolute Masterpiece and Must-See Himeji Castle is not just a castle; it is the castle. Often referred to as the "White Heron" for its brilliant, elegant appearance, it is a stunning and awe-inspiring sight from the moment you exit the station and see it towering over the city. Unlike many reconstructed castles in Japan, Himeji is the real deal—an original 17th-century structure that has survived wars, earthquakes, and the passage of time. The main keep is a magnificent labyrinth of wooden stairs, ancient floors, and complex defensive features. Climbing to the top is a journey through history itself. You can feel the craftsmanship in the massive wooden beams and see the strategic design in the rifle ports and stone-dropping windows. The view from the summit over Himeji city is the reward for the climb, offering a commander's perspective of the land. The extensive grounds and multiple baileys are equally impressive, showcasing a sophisticated multi-layered defense system. The combination of the main keep with the nearby Kōko-en Garden creates a perfect half-day or full-day cultural experience that is unparalleled.
ANIKET K — Google review
This is an amazing site, but not for everyone. As you leave the station it looms over the city as you take the 20 minute walk as the view changes ever so slightly as you approach. Once inside it is a straight forward path through to the main keep, with several spots where you can roam a bit and take some pictures. The inside of castle is beautiful with a focus on the post and beam architecture. There are some smaller historical displays and helpful staff, but the interior highlight is the structure. This is where things may get off base for some. The passage through castle is a relatively straight path with little chance for deviation. Went early in fall at opening so the path was nice, but as it becomes crowded it would feel like trudging through a slow line. Beware the stairs up are VERY steep and they get worse as you go up. The tread height is also higher than normal. For many with bad knees etc it will not get easier and they are just as steep going down. Almost like a ladder at some points. The garden was only 50 yen more and was pretty, but it also followed a set path that took away from the serenity of a garden that I love. If you have time and there are no crowds I would do it. I wouldn’t make a special trip just for the garden. Also, there is a nice shoten gai parallel to main road that is worth taking back to station.
Kevin C — Google review
A most impressive castle. There are 6 floors to the building. The history is really interesting and the views are impressive from the top. However, the castle has some steep stairs and the crowds were really intense in the castle itself. It’s designed to be a one way path up and another path down. At some point there were so many people they blocked entry so that those from the top floors can leave from both sets of stairs.
Jonathan D — Google review
I went there early in the morning, to take some nice photos. It was nice castle, but I loved the gardens more cause it was peaceful calming and not a lot of people. Did a tea ceremony it was enjoyable learnt how to drink match in traditional way. I went on a boat which was front of the castle cost about 1500yen per adult.

Museums
The Himeji City Museum of Art, situated near the iconic Himeji Castle, has been a cultural hub since its establishment in 1983. The museum showcases an extensive collection of both local and international art, including works by renowned Japanese and Western artists. Housed in a charming brick building with a view of the castle, the museum offers visitors access to over 3,700 pieces of art. Its mission is to promote art appreciation within the community through curated exhibitions and art libraries.
The Museum of Art is well worth a visit. If you would like a beautiful photo opportunity of Himeji Castle at night, visit the small walking path behind the Himeji City Museum of Art where tall thick tree trunks are scattered near the castle wall. It's worth a visit.

210¥ per an adult. A great art musuem and a place to cool down. The little cafe had juice and a donut! Took me 30 minutes to get through the first floor and have a snack. The 2nd floor was closed.
Yuuki A — Google review
Decent permanent and temporary exhibit. Primarily came for the TeamLab exhibit and it was ok--the one in Odaiba is definitely a lot better. The art permanent exhibit is ok, there were a couple cool paintings. Place is pretty small, probably at most a one hour visit.
Nicholas P — Google review
Nice place. The permanent exhibit is small, but also low cost. The limited time exhibit was interesting. The statue outside was my favorite part.
Josh B — Google review
Quite interesting that they got a collection of French impressionist here
Bang T — Google review
A nice little art museum, it took me about 45 minutes to see all of it, including the special exhibit which is the longest segment by far, so not the most expansive collection. There is no info in English except for a blurb about the permanent gallery which explains where it came from. Otherwise titles are in their original language and any info in the piece/artist is in Japanese. Definitely a museum for those who are really interested in art as there is nothing so incredible in the normal collection that you need to see.
Zane H — Google review
The museum was small - only two galleries on one floor. There was a cafe outside - it was quite cozy.
Roy C — Google review
It's a nice place for a short visit on the way back from Himeji castle and nearby gardens, and it's not as crowded as the aforementioned nearby places. In fact, I was there alone for most of those approximately 30 minutes I've spent there. It was also a good place to hide from heat since I was in Himeji in August, and outside temperature was over 35°C that day.

Historical landmark
Koko-en Gardens, located near Himeji Castle in Japan, is a collection of nine themed traditional Japanese gardens. These gardens were built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Himeji municipality. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil vibe as they stroll through the 3.5-hectare area featuring water features and seasonal plants. The garden also includes a tea house where traditional Japanese tea ceremonies are held earlier in the day.
Very beautiful garden. It was clearly well taken care of. There is a clear discipline in how it is kept clean and plants pruned. It was really beautiful to understand the different gardens and how each was styled. It was quite big as well with 12~ gardens to visit. We spent so much time there that we even lacked time to do the boat tour around the castle.
Jeff W — Google review
Much more pleasant and peaceful than inside the castle. Don’t miss it. There’s a tea house inside but it’s currently closed. Maybe bring or apply before coming some bug repellent, otherwise you’ll probably get bitten. Our tickets to the castle included the entrance to the gardens, and I believe most do.
André M — Google review
We visited the garden on a saturday in autumn right after we went to himeji castle. Just like the castle, the garden felt extremely crowded. Most of the flowers and ponds in the garden are nicely arranged and well maintained. However, due to it not being one open garden but it being separated into multiple smaller "compartments", we didn't get the calm, serene feeling we usually got at other gardens and parks in japan.
Lea F — Google review
Very beautiful garden that is easy to navigate and even has a recommend route to finish efficiently. Lots of wonderful fall foliage at this time and lots of ponds and small streams. There is the option for a combo ticket with himeji castle, so I recommend that option so you can hit both on the same trip
Brandon S — Google review
Marvelous gardens near Himeji-jo castle. Several separate Gardens linked together with great landscapes, glimpses of Hinegi castle on the distance and lovely water features with a vast variety of koo fish connected by walkway stones. Theybalso had an impressive ichibana exhibit when we visited.
Joe B — Google review
Kokoen garden entry is beside the Himeji castle entry. You can buy combo ticket for the garden and the castle. It is a relatively newly established garden. It is a beautiful garden divided into various gardens. You can walk around exploring the various gardens.
Chhanda B — Google review
While Himeji Castle is of course impressive and worth seeing, for me the real highlight was Kōko-en Garden right next to it. It’s beautifully designed, with different sections that each have their own character — ponds, small waterfalls, and perfectly kept greenery everywhere. Peaceful, scenic, and a perfect place to slow down after visiting the castle.
Christoph P — Google review
I have been to Himeji Castle 4 times, and I had never been to Koko-en. This time I made the effort to explore the gardens and I was impressed. I took one of my favourite photos here, with a golden Koi causing the water to glisten in the sun.

Mt. Shosha, located on the edge of Himeji City, is a 371-meter-high mountain housing the ancient Engyō-ji temple complex. Visitors can reach the mountaintop via a scenic walk or by taking the Shoshazan Ropeway, which offers breathtaking views and departs every 20 minutes from Mount Shosha Ropeway bus stop.
Absolutely loved walking the entire area! It's beautiful nature, shrines, temples, paths, and great way to spend a day!!
Yuuki A — Google review
Nice walk. You will find 3 halls the Daikodo (Great Lecture Hall) with the Jogyodö (Circumambulatory Hall), the Jikido (Refectory) before reaching here and The last samurai was acted here especially in the Jikido (Refectory). Historically, the Jikido was a residential space where monks studied, slept, and took their meals.
Home K — Google review
Mount Shosha is home to the Engyoji temple complex. The mountain and the temple is reachable via the mount Shosha ropeway. The Engyoji temple complex is huge and spread out over the mount Shosha. The places to cover are Mani den, jogyodo, jikido, daikodo. However, except Maniden, many of the buildings are not really open. Also to reach Maniden, which is the main shrine, you have to walk around fifteen twenty minutes from the ropeway station. There are shuttle buses available not at intervals. If you are fit, i would suggest to just walk up. The area is huge and not many people visit, so the place is beautiful and peaceful. I just wish more of the buildings were open for public.
Chhanda B — Google review
One of my favourite visits in the area for its nice green area and tranquility. Also liked the views from cable car access. Had a snack at the small cafe opposite the edifice, which was nice.
Amar — Google review
Gorgeous mountain with incredible sights. Well worth the visit and short hike
Conn M — Google review
This was an amazing experience. I took the bus from the Himeji Station, then the ropeway to the top. I expected it to be full of people, but there was only a small number visiting. Many were older Japanese who seemed Buddhist as they were praying and getting books signed by the monks there. It was so peaceful and felt quite spiritual. The cedars are very attractive and many of them are quite old - about 800 years. I was there for about 2 hours but could easily have stayed longer.
Mary H — Google review
Mt shosha Take bus no. 8 from Himeiji station for approximately 34 minutes to the ropeway station. The single-way bus fee was 280 yen. The cable car arrives every 15 minutes. We arrived around 3.23pm and realised that going to the temple might be pointless because the walk from the Ropeway Station to Engyoji Temple takes about 25 minutes. They recommend allowing two hours to explore Engyoji temple from the station at the top of Mt. Shosha. At 5 p.m., the last cable car will depart from Mt Shosha's summit. Therefore, we decided to abort the mission and leave sadly :(

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History is an engaging destination for history enthusiasts and families alike. Situated near Himeji Castle, the museum offers a comprehensive exploration of local history, featuring exhibits on Himeji Castle and the Hyogo region's heritage. Visitors can immerse themselves in the past through small-scale models, floor plans, and displays showcasing famous temples and statues. Additionally, the museum boasts a children's play area and a 3D cinema room for an interactive experience.
A perfect choice to visit if you're heading to Himeji. For adults, it's 200 JPY/person for entrance for paid floor(2nd floor). 1st floor is free to visit. (However, I strongly recommend you to visit 2nd floor as well.) It has a wide collection of Hyogo prefectural historic stuff which is mainly focused on architecture and entertainment(matsuri, etc.). However, there aren't enough english materials for foreign traveller, so you might not understand of texts in there well. Despite such things, still, it's worth to visit. Overall tour time will probably be about 60 to 90 minutes.

Himeji City Aquarium, situated in Tegarayama Central Park, offers a delightful experience for travelers interested in marine life. 600 yen for 2 levels of aquatic animals and even interactive areas where fish nibble your hand. Also gives access to the monorail museum level and an outdoor rose garden with a beautiful seating area. Near a castle park and the botanical gardens which admits adults for 250 yen each.

The Himeji City Museum of Literature is a sleek and ultramodern building that features interactive exhibits on Japanese novelists and the history of Himeji Castle. The museum offers an observatory on the fifth floor, providing a stunning view of the castle from atop Mount Otoko. Designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, the minimalist structure seamlessly integrates concrete and glass with natural elements.
Went for the Hana to Yume exhibition. It was a really nice exhibition over three rooms. The entrance fee was reasonable and it was easy to get to the museum by public transportation.
Ivy A — Google review
For non-Japanese speakers, this museum is only interesting for the architecture of Tadao Ando. We walked through the path, took a couple of pictures of the building and went right to Boukeitei, the adjacent traditional house which is free to visit.
Fernando H — Google review
No translations are available, so this museum is a complete waste of time for non-Japanese speaking tourists. The only interesting exhibit I saw was the temporary special exhibition, which requires a separate ticket. There’s a small Japanese-style home, but it’s not worth a trip. Worst of all, the building itself looks like a prison. (July 2019)

Engyoji, a large Buddhist temple complex founded in 966, is situated on the mountaintop of Mount Shosha, surrounded by lush forest. The area offers a serene hiking trail and boasts impressive temple structures dating back over 1000 years. Known as the 'Hieizan of the West,' Engyoji features numerous halls and pagodas amidst verdant greenery.
A temple complex on top of Mount Shosha. To reach the mountain top, you could either hike the mountain or ride the cable car. I chose the cable car (highly recommended), but there is still 15-20 minutes of inclined walking from the ropeway to the temple through a path surrounded by the forest. My corporate slave joints are complaining but my eyes and lungs are full of gratitude. I went in late spring so there was no cherry blossoms or autumn leaves. However, the green foliage also felt so rewarding. The temple has a wooden stage which is like a balcony, similar to Kiyomizu-dera. There were not many visitors as well, making it perfect for a calm retreat. We could also explore the areas surrounding the main temple building.

Engyoji Buddhist Temple is a must visit to see a glimpse of Japan's history and culture. Its massive wooden temples are living masterpieces. Tom Cruise's Last Samurai was also filmed here. This is situated on a mountain, ride a cable car then a 700m uphill trek with a difficulty of 5-6. A service coaster is available at the entrance for older people to get to the main temple.

The most magical place I've ever been to. You take the ropeway up to the stop. You can either take a bus or hike your way up. I would recommend to walk your way down after taking the bus up. This place is so serene and calming.
Reem Q — Google review
The Engyoji temple is a significant Buddhist temple located on Mount Shosha in Himeji. The temple complex is huge but main parts to cover are the Maniden, Jogyodo, Daikodo, Jikido. You can dedicate an ema for wish fulfilment at Maniden. The Maniden can be reached via a walk up the mountain from the ropeway station. The walk up is around fifteen minutes and has many Kannon statues on the way. Or you can take a shuttle but it comes at some intervals. Majority of the important places to visit are located within five to ten minutes of walk. But also except for Mani den, many of the buildings are not open for public.

Take bus 10 from Himeji Bus station to Ropeway stop to Engyoji Temple. Scenic view of Himeji along the ropeway up to the temple. Entrance ticket price is 500 yen. I suggest walking up to Maniden and Daikodo-Jikodo-Jogyodo (Scenes of the Last Samurai movie by Tom Cruise) and taking the bus back to the ropeway (500 yen for both ways or one way. You can make paymemt by cash at the entrance or while boarding the bus). Nice place to spend a morning walk. It can get hot and warm in the later part of the day in summer so prepare to drink more water and wear a hat. Check the timing of the ropeway and bus back to Himeji station. You could also inform the driver if you would like to visit Kokoen Garden or Hemiji Castle as there is a bus stop outside Kokoen Garden. This route is better as after visiting the castle, you will be nearer to Himeji main station and can get a late lunch along the streets.

The cable car ride up to Engyō-ji was great, and I really enjoyed the nature and peaceful atmosphere once there. The temple complex is beautiful and feels wonderfully calm — a nice contrast to the busy city below. Only downside was that Google’s route planning for the way back wasn’t the best, but the visit itself was absolutely worth it.

Wonderful despite the rain. Took the bus to the ropeway. Gondola takes 4 min. Paid 1000 yen (500 for temple and 500 for shuttle). You could walk 20 min instead of using the shuttle. You will need to remove your shoes to enter temples. Overall, it was nice and glad we had a guide.

This temple is what I imagine from Japan, more than amazing buildings and rebuilt shrines and castles like a lot of other temples is a true marvel this huge temple complex is maintained so beautifully natural. A must go if you visit Himeji

Taiyō Park in Himeji is a large theme park featuring replicas of famous global landmarks and castles. Visitors can explore over 70 miniature replicas of stone monuments from around the world, including the Great Wall of China. The park also boasts a German-inspired replica castle with various 3D images for fun photo opportunities. Created by a philanthropist, the park aims to provide an opportunity for people with travel difficulties to experience iconic attractions from different parts of the world without leaving Japan.
Now hear this – the castle is the ONLY place in this park you should visit! Me and my friends were treated to 4 floors of awful 'art' and I must be honest – it was so extremely funny! We couldn't stop laughing through the first two floors after coming out of the elevator on the 7th floor. I mean there was a room with a chest filled with folium in one corner and a random tree stump in the other - hilarious. Definitely do this if you have a sense of humour. The other part of the park with the smaller landmarks is not really worth going.
Marko M — Google review
The area and replicas are good. However, the place lacks maintenance except for a few major objects. Moreover, the area itself is quite difficult to reach; there are no train lines nearby and the location and timing of bus stops is not clear. I went on a Sunday and yet there were hardly a few people around; which shows that accessibility is a major deterring factor in enjoying this place.
Haikener K — Google review
I came here around 3 PM when it was sunny, so the scenery was beautiful. However, the castle was built nearly 20 years ago, and the rooms inside that are used for taking photos are no longer very nice. But you’re free to walk around without being watched by the staff, which makes the atmosphere very relaxing.

During the week it feels empty and gives off a deserted vibe. Cool to see the replicas from all around the world!

Taiyo Park in Himeji is a must-visit attraction for those exploring the area. Rated 4/5, this park offers a unique blend of nature and culture, featuring replicas of famous structures from around the world. It's an excellent place for photography enthusiasts and families looking to enjoy a day out amidst beautiful surroundings. The park is conveniently accessible by bus from Himeji Station, making it a straightforward trip. However, it's worth noting that the return bus schedule is less frequent, often requiring a wait of about an hour to get back to the station. While the park is stunning and offers an enjoyable experience, some of the structures show signs of neglect, with maintenance not being as frequent as it should be. Despite this, the overall charm and the variety of attractions make Taiyo Park a worthwhile visit. Whether you're marveling at the replicas or enjoying a peaceful stroll through the scenic landscapes, this park provides a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just be sure to plan your return trip accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.

It feels like a total scam to me.It kept saying that it’s a historical building. But the time you arrived, you’ll find out it turns out to be a normally modern building covered by the castle appearance. And then when you go inside the castle expecting to know the history of the castle, it turns out to be a total joke. In the castle you can only see the fake Euro exhibits such as throne and swords that look like they borrowed from some stage theaters. For the tourists not yet fell into the trap, I highly not recommend you to come here.
Ian H — Google review
Interesting place to visit. You have a castle; inside is a variety of 3D painted rooms which you can take photos of. Have fun and be creative. Theme changes depending on the season. Then if you take a short bus ride, you will find a copy of statues, art of different culture such as mexican gods, temples, chinese army and so on. Again, quite a creative place, well made replicas. The food is average. I reckon eat somewhere else first before coming.

So glad I dragged my Japanese friend here. This place is crazy. We never made it to the castle (and didn't know we were supposed to purchase a ticket) but had a blast wandering through all the sculpture gradens. By turns surreal, kitschy, macabre, beautiful, and disturbing. Well worth a visit if you're in Himeiji and already saw the castle!

Nestled in a rural setting just north of the city, Japan Toy Museum is a renowned attraction known for its beautiful castle and extensive collection of toys. Housed in six traditional warehouses with tasteful folkcraft interiors, the museum showcases over 80,000 toys and dolls from various eras and over 150 countries. Originally the residence of famous toy collector Shigeyoshi Inoue, it now boasts an impressive collection dating back to the 1960s.
A nice cosy place where you can learn about the evolution of traditional Japanese toys. We were lucky enough to have the founder giving us a live demonstration of how some of the traditional toys like spinning tops work. It was fun getting hands on with some of the traditional toys, reminding us of simpler times. We were in time to catch the Christmas Special Exhibition. Some toys from around the world were also housed in another building. It was a unique experience and admission fee was 600yen/ adult. Although a little far off from the city, the trip was enriching and well worth it. More awed to read the brochure about how the founder converted his own home into a museum in order to showcase his private collection of toys! Truly a testament of how following your passion can sometimes lead to building remarkable things! We visited during the winter and the kerosene burners became overwhelming after a while. Otherwise, it was a most pleasant trip and I would like to contribute some traditional Singaporean toys if I get the chance.

A real gem, toys from all over Japan and the world. Toys made in occupied Japan and sent to USA on display. Also handmade kites were outstanding. Special seasonal displays are a nice plus. 15 minute walk from the station through quiet neighborhood to get there.

We visited this toy museum during a day trip to Himeji while our cruise ship was docked at Kobe port and loved it! The town was so serene and peaceful and it was really novel and interesting to learn about history through toys. It was also really fun to play with some with some of them and explore the cute little gift shop. The staff were also really kind, gifting us with some origami as a parting gift and the owner even drove us back to the train station.

Amazing! I can't recommend this place enough. It's the collection of one person. We met him and he showed us how to use some of the toys. The price is very cheap and we got a memorable experience that felt honest, Interactive and personal and got to see an impressive collection of toys and dolls from all over the world. The museum shop is also cool and isn't too expensive. Go there if you have the time, definitely worth it.

Very happy that I chose to visit this museum. I was going to see other museums in the area but they were closed (maybe because of bad weather?). But the toy museum was open and was a fantastic display. They have areas where children can play with some classic japan toys. It was surprising to see some toys that made their way to the American market as well, transformers, furby, robo dog, and of course pokemon. More than toys they have exquisite dolls and handicraft on display. I think everyone will find something interesting here. Skip the nintendo museum and come here instead if you want real Japanese culture.
Jay F — Google review
Fantastic medium sized museum of toys from around Japan and other countries as well. The focus is on handmade toys so fans of handicrafts will also enjoy the exhibits. Explanations are mostly limited to country of origin and are provided in Japanese and English. Photos are allowed. A variety of wooden toys are available to play with but most of the items are behind glass. Despite the name, the museum is a labor of love by one man who built the collection with donated items over the past 50 years! I worry about the future of this collection as he is now in his 80s. Visit soon! There's also a membership program to help with the upkeep. I came by car as it's a fair distance from Himeji or Kobe but it is possible to visit but public transportation if you have time to spare.

Nestled in the northern part of Himeji city near Mt. Hiromine, Hiromine Shrine boasts a rich history dating back to 733 when it was established by scholar Makibi Kibi. The shrine is dedicated to Susanowo-no-mikoto, the first God in Japanese culture. Visitors can enjoy a serene atmosphere and take in panoramic views from Himeji Castle to the Seto Inland Sea.
I think for a small city the shinto shrines and temples are top notch. 👍 The tourists in and around the shrine should be happy and proud of all the updates, repairs, and additions to the shrines. (。☬0☬。) The renovation of Kuroda Kanbei shrine is outstanding. ( ´◡‿ゝ◡`) The reason it is the main head of the Gozu Tenno shrine is awesome.👍 And I can't forget to mention Tagawa Shrine that's north from this place near the nature preserve. (ʘᴗʘ✿) What a great attraction for the area. ⛩️😗 You better recommend visiting the Nine Stars and all the other shrines throughout the city like Hiromine Jinja Zuishimo, Hakueyama, Hiromine Jinja Jusha-jo, Kibi Shrine, Ara Shrine, and Engyoji. All with updated areas.🎍🙏🧘‍♀️🧖‍♀️ The view can be captured perfectly at the mountain. ⛰️😤💕

(Translated by Google) It is a shrine with many things to see. A very large shrine, many shrines, and the main shrine of Gozu Tenno. He is also associated with the famous tactician Kuroda Kanbei. Also, you can visit Kusei Pilgrimage, which is not available at other shrines. It was my first time to visit the shrine properly and it is a wonderful shrine. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach the tower gate by visiting Tenso-sha Shrine, which goes up to the right from the torii gate in the parking lot. But it's a difficult road to walk. I took the paved road home, but it took about the same amount of time. In this case, the correct answer might be to head for the main shrine first and then go via Tensosha Shrine later. Behind the main shrine, there are many set shrines for Kusei pilgrimage, and further back there is Iwaza and two other set shrines. It's about 10 minutes from the main shrine, but you'll have to walk a bit on a mountain path. This is the main shrine of Gozu Tenno, which is quite large compared to other countries in Japan, and has a unique way of worshiping. This is a shrine that we highly recommend visiting. The main hall at the back, a nationally designated important cultural property, is one of the largest in Japan and is a syncretic Shinto-Buddhist building in the style of the mid-Muromachi period, with shrines and Buddhist altars alternating. The main deity is Susanoo-no-Mikoto (Gozu Tenno), and it was founded in 733 by the Minister of the Right, Kibi no Makibi. It was revered as the guardian deity of Banshu. The front worship hall was built in the Momoyama period and is 10 ken in length. Behind the main hall are nine rare holes where the gods of the nine stars, from Ichihaku Suisei to Kyushi Kasei, reside. In the worship hall, people give thanks to the gods for their daily blessings, then go around to the back of the main hall and whisper prayers to the guardian deity in the hole of their destiny star three times for what they want to be granted. During the Edo period, this was also the main entrance, or Otemonguchi gate. At the time, it was a triple-story gate and was the most dignified and secure of the castle's gates. However, it was demolished during the Meiji period. Subsequently, a plan was made to restore the turrets and other structures around Himeji Castle's Sannomaru, and this gate was rebuilt in 1938 as part of that effort. Rather than making it triple-story, it was rebuilt in the Korean-style with higher eaves at the site of the former central gate to allow military vehicles to pass more easily. Seeing it in person, it was so impressive that I could have easily believed it had been there since the Edo period. Furthermore, above the gate there is a design of the ``Paulownia Crest'' which is the origin of the name, and the paulownia crest is quite formal, and now there is no trace of a small stone wall, and there is really no remains. All three gates were requisitioned by the Ministry of War in 1874 (Meiji 7) and became military facilities, and the wooden gates that were inconvenient for passing were removed, leaving almost no trace of them.

Otokoyama Hachimangu Shrine is a small Shinto shrine located around 10-15 minutes' walk from Himeji Castle, in Minamiyashio Park. The shrine offers excellent views of the castle and the city below from its garden at the highest point, reached by climbing a steep flight of stone steps.
Best view of Himeji Castle, but be prepared to climb a lot of stairs! The effort is well worth it, though, as the panoramic vistas from the top are truly stunning. There’s a shrine mid way, didn’t take pictures.

(Translated by Google) I visited the shrine while walking around Himeji Castle. At the base of the shrine is Mizuo Shrine, and on the way up to Otokoyama Hachiman Shrine is Senhime Tenmangu Shrine. The stairs are not particularly steep, but they are quite steep. The view of Himeji Castle from Otokoyama Hachiman Shrine is also quite beautiful, so I thought it was worth climbing the stairs. You can get a goshuin stamp at the shrine office at the base of the shrine, but if the chief priest is not there, you can write your address and name on an envelope and enclose 1,000 yen to apply, and they will mail you the goshuin stamps of Mizuo Shrine, Otokoyama Hachiman Shrine, and Senhime Tenmangu Shrine. (Translated by Google) Otokoyama Hachimangu Shrine is a shrine located on the hillside of Mount Otoko, northwest of Himeji Castle. Its history is long, dating back to 1345, when Akamatsu Sadanori, the builder of Himeji Castle, enshrined a branch of the spirit from Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto and founded it as the castle's guardian shrine. The shrine has been deeply revered by successive lords of Himeji Castle, and there are records of renovations to the shrine buildings by Matsudaira Naonori in 1679 and Sakakibara Masakuni in 1716. Sakakibara Masakuni, in particular, is said to have dedicated gold-leaf sacred mirrors, stone lanterns, and votive plaques, making the shrine particularly magnificent. The shrine has remained affectionately known as "Otokoyama Yakujin-san" by locals since the Meiji period, and the current shrine building was rebuilt in 1990. The steep stone staircase leading from the south side of Mt. Otokoyama features 198 steps (some sources say 197). Many people use it for health training, and reaching the top leaves a sense of accomplishment. From the top of the steps, you can see Himeji Castle's main tower directly to the side. Especially during the first sunrise of the year, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the sun rising from near the tower. Additionally, from Otokoyama Water Distribution Tank Park at the summit of Mt. Otokoyama, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Himeji Castle and the city of Himeji. The temple grounds are home to historical cultural assets, including a stone torii gate said to have been donated by Sakakibara Masakuni. Yakujin Festival (February 18th-19th) Affectionately known as "Otokoyama Yakujin-san," this grand festival attracts many worshippers seeking protection from misfortune, and prayers are held throughout the night. It is said that Masakuni Sakakibara, the lord of Himeji Castle, donated and built the new shrine as a guardian deity of Himeji Castle. It's located halfway up a mountain and is surrounded by trees, giving it a sacred feel that will make you feel empowered. The water reservoir park at the top is a short distance up from the main shrine, so I think it would be a good idea to take a look at the spectacular view that includes Himeji Castle as well. The on-site restaurant serves dishes made with fermented ingredients, providing a unique culinary experience. Guided tours are offered in both Japanese and English, making it accessible to international visitors. The brewery is known for its award-winning sakes made from locally sourced rice and water.
Sake was tasty. There are tastings from a machine so there is no information that comes with the tasting but there is a brochure. Tasting are a little small for the price but still a fun experience. The grounds are open to tour and read about sake. Cashier was very nice. I bought the lemon sake and my friends bought other bottles that were tasted. It's a little off the beaten path from the tourist area but worth the trip. We went after visiting Himeji Castle.

Came here for a short tour and tasting, arranged as part of a corporate event. Unfortunately the guides/representatives spoke extremely limited English, which was the common language of most of our group. The sake was good, although I’m not an expert, and it was a nice experience overall. The shop was nice, but unfortunately I couldn’t buy as I was traveling internationally with hand luggage only.

This place is well worth the long walk from the train station. This brewery produces some fantastic sake. One can visit the premises and even take a tour in English. but the best part was to enjoy a sake-based meal in a fantastic environment. The food was delicious, and the sake ice cream to die for. In the shop section, samplers are offered, and a very nice selection can be bought directly on site. The one I have brought back home won an award in 2016, and it was superb.

I love coming to this sake factory as it's only a few minutes' walk from Tegara station on the Sanyo train line (first station after Himeji - make sure to take the train that stops at all stations). The staff are friendly and you can taste the sake and view the premises for free. I recommend going to the restaurant for a delicious lunch and ordering the flight of 3 different sake ("nomi kurabe").

Otokoyama Senhime Tenmangu is a shrine that holds special significance for young couples and those seeking marital blessings. It is dedicated to Senhime, the daughter of Shogun Hidetada and wife of Hideyori. Many visit this charming shrine to witness the first sunrise of the year, which has become increasingly popular over time. The intricate carvings on the shrine add to its allure, making it a hidden gem worth exploring.

(Translated by Google) It was built in 1623 (Genwa 9) during the early Edo period by Princess Sen (daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada, granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu). After losing her husband, Toyotomi Hideyori, in the Summer Siege of Osaka, Princess Sen remarried to Honda Tadatoki and lived in Himeji Castle. It is said that she built the shrine to pray for the prosperity of the Honda family and to enshrine the Tenjin (Sugawara no Michizane) whom she worshiped. The shrine was constructed facing east toward Himeji Castle so that Princess Sen, who lived in the Nishinomaru bailey of Himeji Castle, could offer distant worship in the mornings and evenings. Because Princess Sen prayed for happiness with her husband, Tadatoki, the shrine is said to grant blessings for successful love and marital harmony. Additionally, because the enshrined deity is Sugawara no Michizane, it is also said to grant blessings for academic success. It is said that the 10 years that Princess Sen spent in Himeji were the happiest of her life, and in keeping with this, many people come to pray for success in love. Located halfway up Mount Otoko, it also offers a great view of Himeji Castle. The current shrine building was newly constructed in 2002 (Heisei 14) and is characterized by its elegant karahafu style architecture. Enshrined within the grounds is a statue of a cow, which is said to be a messenger of Tenjin-sama, and it is said that stroking it will bring good fortune.

Miyuki Street Shopping District is a covered pedestrian shopping street located near the JR Himeji Station. It features a variety of stores, dining options, and specialty shops spread across six floors. The arcade mall offers a more relaxed shopping experience compared to other bustling streets in Japan, making it an enjoyable place to browse for essentials or pick up gifts. With its tax-free store, sweet shops, food court, and cafes, Miyuki Street provides a convenient and pleasant shopping environment for visitors.
A sprawling stretch of shops and eateries selling great food and Himeji specialties. Really cool to explore
Calvin C — Google review
This is probably the only long shopping street that is directly linked to the JR Himeji station with covered walkways and even if it rains, you can still walk there "dry". Very nice, bright and clean shopping streets with many to see, from lifestyle products like fashion to shoes, bags, drug stores, eateries, cafes, florist etc, just to name a few. Like the other shopping streets, this one is also divided into several sections. The first few sections had the most to see and most crowded (since they are near the train stations) and as you walk further down, less crowded and more quiet and low in human traffic. But the good thing is that towards to end of the shopping street, you will reach the Himeji Castle Park and with another 300-500m, you will reach the Castle! Unfortunately on the day of our visit, it was raining heavily, and we couldn't visit the Castle and also it's closed to the time when it ceased operations. So we spent our time shopping here and bought quite a lot of things. Prices were generally cheap/reasonable. This is a good place to visit and of course, shop and eat!

This area reminds me of the labyrinth-like internal structure of Himeji. By the way, there is a nameplate that reads "National Treasure Himeji Castle" in floating letters, but this nameplate was overwritten with ink on a wooden board, and only the corners did not erode and the nameplate naturally became like floating letters. Akooishi Shrine is a significant and revered Shinto site, characterized by the striking statues of the 47 legendary ronin of Ako that line its path. This sacred shrine holds immense historical significance as it was once the dwelling place of the leader of this renowned group. Its tranquil and serene atmosphere is awe-inspiring and provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to learn about this captivating story.
This was a cool shrine dedicated to the 47 ronin. It was neat learning the history of the event. Seeing statues of them on both sides as you walk into the shrine was a neat thing. My goal of getting a new shrine stamp book was also a thing i was happy I could do whole here.

Oishi jinja shrine is built on the former OISHI’s mansion and enshrines about 300 years ago Samurai Yoshitaka OISHI, the leader of Ako Gishi (the lord of Ako, Naganori ASANO’s 47 loyal servants). “Chushingura” one of the most famous Kabuki play is written to base on the episode that Ako Gishi killed the enemy instead of their lord. Paintings depicting famous scenes from “Chushingura” are on display. The treasure museum displays samurai’s swords, armors and household items. The giant tree in the garden is 350 years old.

Harima no Kuni Sōsha Shrine, located southeast of Himeji Castle, has a rich history dating back to the year 787 when the Hyozu god was moved to Onoe. The shrine's Mitsuyama-taisai festival is a significant cultural event held every 20 years since 1533, featuring rituals and traditional clothing. Visitors can admire the beautiful red torii gate and explore the large grounds with smaller torii gates.
If you come by Himeji Castle, you could detour for this little shrine asking for bless.

Also, there are aristolochia which we planted when we were elementary school. It Is the food for black butterflies. So you can see some musk swallowtails during summer time.. It is very beautiful.

Mitsuyama-taisai is a festival of cultural property in Japan. It have been held once every 20 years since 1533. Mitsuyama means "three mountains", actually you can see three big mountain-shaped objects that are capable of calling Japanese spirits during the festival. Former festival was held for 31 march to 7 April in 2013. The next will be held in 2033. If have an opportunity to come, you will be able to see rituals, people wearing traditional clothes.

The Nishinomaru Remains is an exquisitely maintained and visually pleasing garden adorned with numerous sakura trees and Japanese pine. The captivating view of the castle from this location is equally stunning, arguably surpassing the frontal perspective when captured in photographs. Additionally, two augmented reality spots are available for those equipped with the Himeji castle AR application. For a unique and unforgettable encounter, it is suggested to visit this historical landmark during nighttime special events.

The palace of Nishinomaru has long since been reduced to ashes, with only the corridors and turrets surrounding the palace remaining, hence the name "Nishinomaru Ruins." You can visit this before visiting Himeji Castle. I've found that tour groups tend to have less time to come here, so it's relatively less crowded, making it a very leisurely stroll to see Senhime's private dressing room and the sleeping quarters for the maids. I highly recommend it as a must-see itinerary. The bridge leads to an adventure at the castle and is lined with food stalls selling various Japanese foods and souvenirs. Visitors can also enjoy a different ambiance at nightfall, capturing a totally different feel compared to daytime visits.

It’s free to see and walk on at the moment. In case you want to read up(you will this detail there too) Otemon Gate and Sakuramon Bridge Otemon Gate is the main entrance to Himeji Castle. It was once a much different structure: a pair of fortified gateways separated by an inner courtyard and topped by imposing guardhouses. The original gate buildings were dismantled during the Meiji era (1868-1912), when the castle served as a base for the Imperial Japanese Army, which needed a wider passage that could accommodate modern vehicles. The current gate dates to 1937. It was built in the koraimon style, with a pair of auxiliary roofs extending at right angles from the gate's inner side to cover the open doors. Although koraimon literally means "Korean gate," the design has little connection to the Korean peninsula, and the term was likely used to suggest an exotic style. The gate faces Sakuramon Bridge, which crosses the moat. The bridge was rebuilt in 2007 based on drawings of the original structure from the Edo period (1603-1867).

The access to Himeji Castle. A newer bridge that's very busy. On the weekends there's a flea market in the parking lot adjacent to the bridge. On the way out there were actors dressed as samurai for photo ops. I did not check the price. The castle itself is astonishing. That's one of the 12 originals still remaining, it isn't excellent experience of 400 years ago. Very, very popular. I arrived at 8:45 and the castle opened at 9:00. They provided a canopy for the waiting line.

Okiku Well, also known as Okiku Ido, is a famous site linked to the haunting ghost story "Banshu Sarayashiki." Visitors often toss coins into the well while paying their respects or making wishes.

The Azuki Museum is a modern museum located in a lush green setting, showcasing the culture and history of red azuki beans in Japan. The museum offers free guided tours and paid experiences where visitors can make sweets using local azuki beans. It also features outdoor art installations that enhance the scenic beauty of the surrounding World Heritage site and Japanese National Treasure Himeji Castle.
There are different levels to loving Japan. When you can appreciate a museum like this one, you are truly in love with Hinomoto. Each aspect of Japanese food has devoted perfectionists whose passion is nurturing & knowing that ingredient; such as the particular grain of rice or the specific soya bean. For this museum, it is the beloved azuki bean. I've only taken two school groups here, the first did not appreciate it, but the second were able to, as they saw it through my twin sons' eyes, who are half Japanese & are curious about all aspects of their heritage.
Aaron L — Google review
Opening hours are frustratingly unclear, the doors actually close at 4pm which would have been nice to know before walking across the city for an hour. Other Japanese businesses disclose this in the Google listing, so there's no excuse.
Michael H — Google review
Be careful ‼️The museum closes at 17:00 but you can only enter the museum until 16:00 and I mean it. If you arrive at 16:02 it is already to late to enter. We even took a taxi to make it on time but there was traffic. Quite disappointed but I suppose that after all the rule is the rule. Guess, I'll never know the history behind azuki beans. So please keep in mind that you should be on time and enjoy the museum in my stead.

The food and interactive cooking stuff you can do are interesting. The only expensive thing to be careful is the display room. It is expensive.

(Translated by Google) This is a corporate museum dedicated to Gozasho and Azuki beans. Most visitors arrive by car, and while there is a reasonable amount of parking, it seems rare to see anyone arriving by Shinki Bus or walking from JR or Yamaden Station. However, JR Himeji Station is 1.5 km away, JR Higashi-Himeji Station is 1 km away, and it's a 5-minute walk from the convention venue, Acrie Himeji (a great place to stop by after an event). If you're confident in your walking, you can probably walk there from the train station, and there's also a bus stop right next to the museum. ※ Himeji Station South Exit (Shinkansen side) ~ Koaho Kita (approximately 1 bus per hour during the day) Also, from the Medical Center bus stop about 300m north, ※ Himeji Station North Exit (Oshiro/Sanden Station side) ~ Kita-Harima Himeji General Medical Center ~ JR Higashi-Himeji Station (Sanyo Line regular stop) / Aho Depot (approximately 2-4 buses per hour during the day) In terms of eco-friendliness and traffic safety, it is preferable to use local buses Fare payments and increased usage will also help protect local transportation Shinki Bus "Shiro no Machi 2-day ticket" is available from Himeji Station ~ ¥ The unlimited rides are available for 250 sections, so Himeji Station to Koaho Kita, Kitaharima Himeji General Medical Center, Higashihimeji Station, and Aboshako bus stops are included in the unlimited rides section. It's perfect for a one-day trip to the Shoshazan Ropeway, Himeji Castle, (the Aquarie Himeji event), and the Azuki Museum. *Please note that there are no signs or announcements at the Shinki Bus bus stop indicating that it is the closest bus stop to the Azuki Museum, so it seems like they are missing out on customers, which is a shame. I would definitely recommend coming by train or bus. If you know you can get there by public transportation, even people without a driver's license or those who have returned their license can go there with peace of mind, but there is little advertising, so it seems like they are missing out on tourists. It is also next to the Himeji Taxi Office, so it seems like it would be easy to use a taxi. The entrance fee of ¥1,200 seems expensive at first glance, but there is a certain consideration, such as the disability discount (including mental disabilities) which is half price for the person with the disability certificate and free for the caregiver, so if you go as a pair, it is effectively 1/4. It may be an unexpected hidden gem for sightseeing in Himeji. (Translated by Google) I visited the Azuki Museum in Himeji City. The admission fee was a bold 1,200 yen, but the cafeteria on the second floor was only open to visitors. The first floor had exhibits that would be perfect for a children's field trip. I was impressed by a chart comparing the global production of azuki beans and other grains. The exhibition room explaining the process from germination to harvest featured a huge green pod displayed like an artwork, which was fascinating. The video playing on the screen in the first floor viewing area was about the evolution of Chinese civilization rather than the origins of azuki beans, so it was long and monotonous, so I didn't need to watch it. The screen on the second floor also focused more on traditional Japanese culture rather than on azuki beans, so I felt there was no need to watch it. I ate in the cafeteria on the second floor. Apart from the udon noodles, the dishes were all azuki bean-based. The azuki bean porridge in particular takes a while to prepare, so I recommend ordering well in advance. The azuki bean tempura tempura added a nice accent and was delicious. Both the red bean soft serve and the red bean parfait tasted just as I expected and were enjoyable. Also, two parent-child pairs who were not paying attention to their children were eating at the same time and running around the cafeteria, making a lot of noise. The waitresses in the cafeteria seemed to be part-time women, and I thought it might have been difficult for them to speak to them given their position. Daiwa Roynet Hotel Himeji is a modern hotel located in the heart of Himeji, offering clean and convenient accommodations. It's an ideal choice for visitors planning to explore the nearby Himeji Castle and enjoy the local cuisine. The hotel features a fitness center, private parking, and a restaurant, providing guests with city views. While it boasts a great location and new facilities, some guests have noted that the bedding is quite firm.
Large room compared to similarly priced option in Japan (ignoring Tokio and Osaka), very clean, comfy bed, nice bath with separate shower/bath room. You have three washing machines which are clean an new, bag of clothes wash and dry for 500 Yen. Breakfast is good, I do not share the negative experience of other guests. Friendly and English speaking staff. Less than 10 min from the station, surrounded by shopping streets incl many restaurants, whatever you are looking for, better leave the premises, there is much better than the options in 1F. Castle is just a short walk as well.

Great stay at this location, staff were friendly, parking is 1200 yen per day, cheaper than major cities but a bit more than nearby coin parking. The parking is via car elevator type which o personally dislike but the staff here is super quick and the elevator is quick too, so it's as good as car elevator goes. The room had a super amazing view of himeji castle. It is a bit dated, minor damages in the room, but overall it's clean, spacious and comfy (good aircon).

The rooms were ok, the central location is very good. But the breakfast was by far and away the worst of the whole holiday in every respect and the third worst we have had in three extended holidays in Japan. Just so there is no confusion: we appreciate Japanese breakfast much more than ‘Western’ breakfast, but nothing was right here.

The staffs are friendly as well as helpful and speak good English. You could check in, check out and exchange money (bills to coins) with the machine on the loungue floor. The room is clean and spacious (you could even see the Himeji Castle from the window). I highly recommend the hotel if you want to stay in Himeji.

Average hotel. Very small rooms. Nowhere to hang towels. Breakfast quite poor overall. Staff polite. Location perfect. If price point and location are key, this hotel is OK.

Close to Himeji station (JR, Sanyo, and Shinkansen lines), close to tons of food establishments. Clean rooms, comfortable bed, modern, spotless bathroom, and friendly staff. Would 100% recommend staying here for anyone in the Himeji area!

Hotel seems premium, would love an onsen, everything was modern, staff were friendly and helpful, would stay here again, my only gripe would be air conditioning is centrally controlled, takes several hours to cool the room.

The shrine offers a great view of the sea through its torii gate and is popular among visitors seeking matchmaking charms.

Hotel Monterey Himeji is a stylish city hotel conveniently located directly connected to JR Himeji Station. It has garnered high praise from both visitors and locals for its refined accommodations, including spacious rooms with picturesque views of Himeji Castle. The hotel's Italian restaurant and bar offer a chic dining experience, while guests can also enjoy communal bathhouses on-site.
Unfortunately, there is nothing to complain about this hotel. Great location, great service (there are still people at the counter). The room was amazing, by Japanese standards the size of the room, the bathroom and the bed was luxurious and the 2 of us almost lost ourselves:) nice view from the window. The hotel has its own baths - perfect for relaxation, men also have a sauna, women a steam room. If we ever go around again, we will definitely be happy to stop by again.

We booked a room for three, and it is spacious by Japanese standards. The room is also clean and dry. The front desk lady spoke good English, and was very nice throughout our stay. They also let us store our luggage after checkout.
Howie — Google review
The rooms are exceptionally clean, the facility security is very good and safe. The bed mattress is not too firm and not too soft. The breakfast buffet has a large variety of food japanese and western. The breakfast buffet room is very comfortable and a wonderful view from 14th floor. However, the coffee was too strong and the coffee machine for cafe latte only produces at most half of a small coffee cup. Both machines barely make enough cafe latte so one needs to run it twice. Overall, this hotel is fantastic because close to bus, train, restaurants, and shopping.
Akinoshimo — Google review
We had a comfortable stay and appreciated the closeness to the Shinkansen and bus to the castle. It was nice to have crockery mugs and some tea and coffee supplied. We didn’t use the pyjamas and would have preferred a yakata to wear to the public bath on the 4th floor. We were disappointed that tattoos are not allowed and no talking in the hot baths/sauna. The layout was strange because people sat in the hot pool facing the people washing themselves.

Perfect hotel located just next to the train station yet we were not able to hear anything. The price was also not bad for a twin room. The staff were kind and able to speak english assuring a quick check-in. We were also able to get much earlier than the expected 16.00 time. The rooms are nice and decent size for japan, but the toilet is a bit on the smaller size for westerners.

Absolutely stunning hotel, feels very premium. This is probably the most beautiful place I have stayed in my 1 week trip in Japan 👍 The staff are very proficient with English, this is helpful if you don't know Japanese. The room I stayed in overlooks Himeji station, its nice to be able to see what the rush hour looks like in a foreign country. The hotel is only 5 minutes walk from the station. The have impressive interior designs, video on demand for 1000 yen and many amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The TV is also modern and supports screen sharing my phone. Internet is fast, there's also a shared public bath. The have vending machine (beer included), washing machine, ice machine, dryer, the list goes on but I am gonna stop here. I highly recommend staying at this hotel even if it costs a little more, I did not regret splurging at the final destination of my trip😁 Stayed for a night on 1 Apr 2025
De O — Google review
Rooms were spacious and beds were comfortable. It is located right in front of Himeji station, so there was no problem getting there with a heavy luggage. There were sufficient signage from the station to get one from the north exit to the hotel. The reception may not be fluent in English but that was not a problem since the standard hotel instructions which was issued were multilingual. Abit of a shame that there was not much of a view to be had, but at least the in-house onsen and laundry option made up for it
Lo J — Google review
Got a tatami room which was nice, clean and quiet despite being right next to the station. Convenient location. Didn't like the motion detector light in the toilet room, have to wear an eyemask to pee in the middle of the night else get blasted by light. Everything else pretty solid typical Japanese hotel room.

Easy walking distance to the castle. Adequate buffet with very friendly staff. Very much enjoyed my stay.

Amazing option in Himeji. Great location. I stayed for one night in early May. One of the best Hotels I stayed in Japan. The hotel included amenities at reception and washing machines on the second floor. You can have unlimited coffee and drinks from 2PM to 8PM. They also offered optional breakfast. Offers great value for the money. Excellent facilities for the money. Rooms are small like the European rooms, but I was already use to this. Breakfast buffet is uniquely Japanese and delicious! Evening between 9:30pm-11:00 pm they offer free hot ramen that’s delicious. It’s not instant ramen. A chef makes it fresh. The staff is outstanding! Very helpful. Very patient with me in spite of my poor Japanese. Laundry and dryers are available. Washng machine is free. Dryers are coin-operated. I want to give special mention to the female front desk staff person who worked Saturday, October 19, 2024. She greeted me and confirmed my room for breakfast and then later she covered the front desk around 2pm that day. She was beautiful, yet humble and professional. She was very intelligent and resourceful and well groomed. She helped prepare my Shūgi-bukuro for a wedding that I had to attend that day. She translated my English greetings into Japanese and wrote it in beautiful calligraphy in the money envelope for me. She then helped wrap the money gift and special envelope. She took her time and was very detailed. She also helped me and my wife provide a place to get dressed for the wedding. She prepared a special floor covering so that we did not have to step on the bathroom floor and get our feet dirty while changing clothes. She made Dormy Inn a very special place for me. Her co-workers were just as helpful.

The facilities seems pretty old. Onsen was great but the initial room I was assigned to for one person at the end of the hallway was really pathetic, it’s all covered by dues and the complimentary little jelly thing is expired for almost a month. The room has some mechanical noise so I got to switch to another room, it was an upgrade. The twin room was much much better, no dust, has a bathtub etc. I guess you get what you paid for but a room covered by dust was still quite unpleasant and deliver an eerie feeling. Nevertheless, the staff were wonderful. The complimentary ramen at the nice was okay.

A very basic Dormy Inn, even by Dormy standard. The hotel does not look old, but it's not well maintained. The worn-out chair in the room (see photo) gives the hotel a much older feel, at least for me.

Compare to other Dormy Inn, this Dormy Inn is a little small, so is the lounge area for onsen, and the room. Other than that, the service is really good, and it has the soul of Dormy Inn perfectly.

Very good hotel to stay at for a night. Bring earplugs, though, the neighbor's shower was crazy noisy as was the 24/7 fan in the bathroom (and the biker gang at night lol). The onsen was lovely and I had it all to myself at midnight. I appreciate them using a pin code to enter the women's bath. Everything was perfectly clean. The bed was nice and big. Super comfy desk chair! I'd have loved to try the breakfast but gimme a break: 8:40am closing time. I'm on vacation xD. Check out time is 11am, though, that's a relief in Japan.

There is a FamilyMart right opposite to the hotel. And a seven eleven near by. The receptionist is very nice and helpful. Although their english is not fluent, they have a translator machine and makes communication much more easier. We arrived early, and they are more than welcome to help our luggage storage. After the hot spring, they provided free sou sauce ramen. Not a big portion, but we bought some food from the convenient store near by and enjoy with the ramen, which was delicious. The hotel is not very near to the Himeji Castle. It takes around 30 minutes to walk there through the main street. It was ok cause there are many to see at the main street. We went to the castle by taxi, with less then 2000yen within 10 minutes. Would highly recommend this hotel.

I ussually love staying at dormy inns however this one must be one of their older hotels. The toilet & bidet were very outdated & their wasn't much room to sit on the toilet, the ceiling in the room seemed low in places and I hit my head in the bathroom on the lower section. The fridge in our room kept freezing our drinks & food. The free ramen, ice cream & morning probiotic drinks are always a win. Also loved the open air onsen on the roof of the hotel. The hotel is in a good location close to Himeji station & castle so it does have that going for it.

I stayed at the Comfort Hotel Himeji, a cozy hotel situated in a tall building, located not far from Himeji Train Station. The room and bathroom were quite tiny, but they were super clean and tidy, making for a comfortable stay. Despite the compact size of the rooms, the hotel provided a welcoming and efficient environment.

We arrived a little early. However, the hotel staff were more than happy to store our luggage for free while we went out for a few hours. The room was very clean and well organised. The amenities were good. The complimentary breakfast was good, and had a good variety. Location-wise, the hotel was a walkable distance to Himeji station, the shops and Himeji Castle. It was great that there was a 7-Eleven right next to it.

Pleasant stay at Comfort Hotel Himeji. The friendly staff were welcoming and made sure you know your way around. The staff employed have good service etiquette and always go the extra mile to make you feel comfortable. On my most recent visit, I was feeling particularly nauseous/jetlagged and vomited at the breakfast table. Although I didn't make a mess, a young female service staff immediately gave me some plastic bags and a bunch of serviettes in case I vomited again. An older female service always made sure that the water dispenser was kept clean and dry in the mornings. Truly 5-star service from Comfort Hotel! The complimentary breakfast was one of the best! Loved the smoothies which were made with authentic ingredients and not overly sweet. There was also a very basic spread of continental breads and Japanese sides and salads. Great way to get some fibre into your system in the morning. I made sure to take photos of my daily breakfast spread everytime I am here. The stir fry burdock and beef slice breakfast side is a real gem! おいしい Although the rooms were a little small and the elevated toilet takes a little bit of getting used to, the stellar service, 24-hour hot drink dispenser, accessibility to amenities and attractions made up for it.

Nestled in the serene landscape of Harima Province, Taiunzan Kagaku-ji is a significant Zen temple that holds deep historical roots as the family shrine for the Ako domain's feudal lords, including the Asano, Nagai, and Mori families. A highlight of this sacred site is the Shioya So-mon gate, which has been relocated from Ako Castle and stands as a cultural treasure of Ako City.
Very great shrine.

There are the tomb of Naganori ASANO, the lord of Ako and his faithful 47 retainers in this temple. About 300 years ago, Naganori ASANO, the lord of Ako, drew his sword and attacked Yoshichika KIRA, a high government official, at Edo Castle (Supreme Leader’s palace). It is said that the cause was that KIRA had insulted ASANO. The magistrate sentenced ASANO to death without enough deliberation, but KIRA was found innocent. And a year later, Ako Gishi (ASANO's 47 retainers) broke into KIRA's mansion and took revenge by killing him. The magistrate ordered 47 retainers to commit suicide. They can’t be judged under current laws. They were praised for risking their lives to settle the score for their former lord, The play “Chushingra” based on this episode became a huge hit and remains widely known as one of the most representative works of 18th century Japan.

Sengakuji Temple is not really worth seeing unless you are interested in Ako Roshi. Kagaku-ji Temple is the family temple of the Asano clan, the lord of the Ako domain, and the bodies of the first and second generation are buried here, but the third generation, Takumi Asano, committed a crime in Edo and had his stomach cut in Edo, so his body is buried at Sengaku-ji. The same is true of the 47 samurai who killed Kira Kaminosuke in the name of revenge. Some time after the Asano clan's reform, the Mori clan, who became the lord of the Ako domain, also made Kagakuji a family temple, but there are no great treasures related to it. (Translated by Google) We stayed here for a two-day, one-night family trip. This time, we especially wanted to relax, so although there was a large public bath on the premises, we chose a room with a bath in the room. It was very quiet, and when we opened the sliding doors, we could see the ocean in its entirety. The ocean in front of us was tidal, so it was wide enough for people to walk, and even at high tide, it only came up to an adult's knees. The open-air bath in the room had a very open feeling and felt amazing. The food was also sumptuous, using local seafood. And best of all, the futon was so comfortable that I fell asleep without realizing it, and when I woke up I wasn't tired at all. The staff were also very warm, easy to talk to, and comfortable. We brought our baby, and there was a baby plan, and diapers and body shampoo were provided. There was also a fluffy futon, which seemed to make him very happy. The next morning, we went to the large public bath, and the view of the ocean from the third floor was also exceptional, which was great! We will definitely use it again. I stayed in a detached building, but the building was old. The hot spring was soft and just the right amount of warmth! However, the response was not good. I had told them that I would come by car, but there was no parking lot. The food was laid out with a bang, and there were times when there were no explanations. I didn't think the price matched the value. (Translated by Google) Thank you for taking care of two families (4 people). I wasn't able to use the public bath due to the cold wave, but thanks to that! I felt like I had gained something by taking a bath in my room. The room was clean and the view from the window (sunset) was great. When I say it's the best, I'm very satisfied with the deliciousness and quantity of the food. It was an inn that I would like to visit again. This time I'm planning on doing it in the spring. Lastly, I was surprised to see that most inns wear yukata, but here they wear samue! If I wear a yukata, it will always come off, so I was able to sleep soundly at night thanks to the Samue. Japanese-style business hotel
Nestled in the heart of Himeji, JR CLEMENT INN HIMEJI offers a perfect blend of convenience and comfort for travelers. Just a short drive from iconic attractions like Himeji Castle and Setonaikai National Park, this hotel is ideally situated within the bustling business district. Guests can enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi and access to various amenities, including a restaurant and vending machines. The rooms are spacious enough to accommodate larger luggage while maintaining cleanliness that guests appreciate.
I had a great stay here. Himeji was a nice area and it was a short walk to the station. There are some lovely restaurants around. The staff were lovely. The room was perhaps a bit small but nothing to really complain about. It was very clean. They had all the amenities I required. They allowed me to store my luggage for a while after check out too which I appreciate.

Stayed here for one night with plans to catch an early train. It’s incredibly convenient - about 5 minutes from the JR ticket gates. Rooms are in good condition and spotlessly clean, staff were helpful and friendly, and there’s a coffee machine in reception which is always handy! Oh, and there’s a local sento about a block away if you want one. A really good business hotel.

I stayed 6 nights. The service is excellent. I asked the hotel staff to book a shared taxi for my Bitchu Takahashi Castle trip and they not hesitated to do so. The heater turned off on 1st April but the weather was still too cold for me and the hotel provided a portable heater. Thank you! The location is very closed to Himeji station and there are many convenient store & restaurants & shopping mall nearby. The room is clean and big enough to open my 24" luggage. Many selections of amentities to choose. Elevetor is fast. Breakfast is very delicious including udon from Shikoku. There is the happy hour during 6-9 pm. Eventhough I'm not a drinker, I enjoy the time. Will be my 1st choice when I visit Kansai next time.

(Translated by Google) It's located right next to the south exit of Himeji Station. The rooms are compact but convenient. Amenities are plentiful, including bath salts and shoe desiccants. Although we didn't use it, there is a welcome drink corner on the first floor where you can drink alcohol and soft drinks for free. They also offer ochazuke (rice with green tea) service. There is also a coffee and tea corner. Check-out is also quite late at 11:00. My only concerns are that the air conditioning only adjusts the airflow, not the temperature, and there is a smell from the drain pipes in the bathroom. Shironoshita Guesthouse is an informal accommodation option in Himeji, Hyogo. It offers simple dorms and private rooms with a kitchenette and laundry facilities. The owner is known for being very nice, and the rooms are well-maintained. The location is convenient, providing easy access to attractions and restaurants. Guests can also get good recommendations from the owner for local places of interest, including a small but popular okonomiyaki restaurant.
Best lodging experience ever! I am completely blown away by the incredible level of service shown by the owner! This place is spotless and incredibly nice! The owner is the nicest person I have met in Japan so far. He went completely out of his way to help us any way he could. The location was ideal. It was only a few minutes walk from the train station. I wish we were staying here our entire trip! This is the best accommodation we have had in Japan, and it was a fraction of the price! It even includes breakfast. I could not be happier!

The BEST BEST BEST experience I’ve had in Japan so far! I would absolutely love to come back in the future and will be recommending this place to all my friends and family. The hospitality was truly unmatched. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed with a cup of tea at check-in. The hosts were incredibly kind, the wife even took the time to personally show us to our room and give a detailed tour of the floor, including how to set up the futon properly. Everything was spotlessly clean!! The washrooms, sinks, rooms, and sheets all looked and felt brand new. It was clear that a lot of care goes into maintaining the space. Truly a memorable stay!

I really loved my experience staying here for two nights while in himeji! Tomo-san is very welcoming and the place was very comfortable. I opted for my own room, which had everything I needed. I'm already used to a futon mattress at home, but there is extra cushions if you need it. I also got the breakfast option, which is the standard kind of western style breakfast, but the toast is so good! It's got some kind of butter/sugar topping and it's pretty addicting! In the evening it's pretty quiet being a residential area and I heard no noises from the other guests; perfect for anyone who needs that peace and quiet for a good night's sleep. So if you're someone who likes to travel a little on the more budget side and likes to meet fellow travelers, definitely stay here while in himeji!

The people are incredibly kind and helpful. I actually can't overstate this. I accidentally left my passport on the bullet train from Fukuyama Station to Himeji Station and didn't realize it until we were checking in. The owner was nice enough to DRIVE me and my father TO HIMEJI STATION in order to help us find it by acting as an interpreter for us. I mean, he gave up his time with his kid and wife to help us find it. Me and my father could not thank him enough. Again, the people are incredibly kind and helpful. 20/5 stars

This place is truly spotlessly clean! Thank you so much for your caring attention into it. The house is amazingly cozy and homely, I felt immediately at home and comfortable. I love the wooden & white interior combination that gives it a modern and bright vibe. The second floor corridor has a really nice cozy feeling to it. I love all the details of the house design, it makes me want to take my time and enjoy, like in the wash basin corner or the bathroom. Overall, the house feels really conducive for me, I wish it was my own home. I had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay in the mixed dorm room (minus the snoring and extended shuffling of things at night by a male roommate). Thank you for this reassuring temporary home experience!

Miki Museum, located near the World Cultural Heritage Himeji Castle, has been open since June 2008. The museum aims to enrich the culture of the Harima region by showcasing a collection of about 800 pieces of porcelain and approximately 200 paintings by renowned artists. Visitors can enjoy works by various artists on display, with special exhibitions on the third floor and fixed displays by Seiji Togo and Koichi Nabatame on the fourth floor.

I had toured Himeji Castle a few hours earlier, so seeing Himeji Castle from the rooftop was a bit different from seeing it up close. I was happy to be able to capture both the mountain and Himeji Castle in the photo at the same time. Coupled with the pleasant receptionist's story, it's an art museum with the best value for money. I would like you to see Himeji Castle as seen from the rooftop. Very close to the train station & main touristic attractions (only 15 minutes walk from the castle) 🏯 I stayed in the women's only dormitory and it was marvellous. There were 2 towels, one sheet mask given (🥹 so nice) and in the shower room shampoo/conditioner/body soap. The place feels very spacious and the beds are comfortable. There is a nice common room, two fridges, a boiler, coffee and tea. There are even toothbrushes if you forget yours :) I also met lovely people there. There is also a kettle with free coffee and tea, as well as a small common lounge area to relax in or eat. The staff are kind and welcoming, and the overall atmosphere is pleasant.

And many shower facilities as well as toilets. They give you a one free towel. Theyve got shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in their bathroom. Maybe they were different in the past, but theyve definietly changed now. Dont mind their bad reviews, if you come to Himeji, make sure to stay here for a night. Recommended.

Nestled in Otemae Park, just a short stroll from the iconic Himeji Castle, the Egret Himeji Observation Deck is a must-visit for anyone exploring this historic area. This multifaceted facility not only houses the International Exchange Center and Aimesse Hall—where various events take place—but also features an array of dining options.
(Translated by Google) Located approximately 500 meters away from Himeji Castle Free observation deck. This is the rooftop of Citizen Plaza "Egre Himeji". About 6 minutes walk from Himeji Station. We recommend walking through the arcade street ``Miyuki Dori''. You'll have a fun time walking along the shopping street while enjoying the view. When you arrive at Egre Himeji Please aim for the "central elevator" near the central entrance. This is an elevator hall with two elevators. It is easiest and quickest to take the elevator from here to the top floor. There were hardly any people on weekdays, so I was able to enjoy the view at my leisure. When coming to Himeji Castle on foot from Himeji Station, Rather than proceeding along Otemae Street, First, take a look at the observation deck on the second floor of the north exit of the station. Go through Miyuki Street to the Egre Himeji Observation Deck, After seeing Shachihoko in Shiromidai Park We recommend entering the castle via Sakuramon Bridge. Historical landmark
Nestled in the heart of Himeji Castle, the Bizenmaru (Main Bailey) Site is a captivating area steeped in history. Once home to the castle architect Ikeda Terumasa and his family, this expansive space now stands as a testament to resilience after suffering destruction from fire during the Meiji Period. Although it may seem like just an open plaza today, Bizenmaru remains one of the most frequented spots within the castle grounds.
(Translated by Google) This is a paid area square of Himeji Castle. If you follow the tour route, after touring the inside of the castle, you will arrive at this plaza when you go outside. I think this is the best place to take pictures of the castle from directly in front. It was popular because there was a stand where you could place your smartphone or camera to take selfies. You can still take photos of the castle without using it. Visited on a weekday Friday. There were benches and everyone was relaxing. The view outside the castle walls is also quite good. With the increase in inbound tourism, this kind of European-style leisurely tourism may be beginning to spread to Japan. (Translated by Google) This is the karawa called "Bizenmaru", which was also called "Gozenmaru" in the past. Originally, it was the site of the palace of Ikeda Terumasa, but it is said that after Honda Tadamasa became the lord of the castle, the palace was moved to San-no-maru. Due to its small area, it is speculated that the buildings in Quwa were quite dense at that time. During the large-scale renovation in the Showa period, drainage ditches and building remains were excavated under the stone wall of the castle tower. Even after the palace was moved to San-no-maru, there were still buildings such as a two-story turret, a long tower, and a go-opposite-sho on the south stone wall, and a platform and a turret inside the curved wagon. The Godaisho and Nagakubutsu buildings were destroyed by fire in 1882, and only part of the Bizen Gate and the Tsurugai Turret remain.

The Honmaru Palace and Nagatsubone were once located here along the stone walls, and buildings lined the grounds from the "Otaimansho" (meeting hall) to just before the Sui Shimon Gate. Unfortunately, the palace was demolished (perhaps moved to Sannomaru?), and the rest was burned down in 1882, and now it's a plaza. By the way, the name Bizenmaru comes from the fact that Ikeda Terumasa's son was given Bizen Okayama Castle, but lived here with his parents as a child. (Translated by Google) ☆The large castle tower that occupies half of the main castle tower, just south of the towering castle tower, is the large castle tower called Bizenmaru. I have always wondered why the name Bizen came from Himeji in Harima Province⁉️ It is said that when the castle was first built, there was a palace for the lord of the castle, Terumasa Ikeda, but it was a little inconvenient because it was on a hill, so after Honda Tadamasa entered the castle, he built a palace in the Sannomaru and moved there, and during the Edo period, it was used as the ``Odaidokoro'' and ``Oryori.'' "Noma" exists, The details of the palace from the Ikeda period are unknown because detailed excavations have not been carried out, and the remaining ``Odaidokoro'' and ``Oryori no Ma'' were destroyed by fire during the army garrison in 1882, along with the ``Nagatu'' on the stone wall. It's a shame that it was burnt down 😫 There are various theories about the origin of the name❗️ 1. Because Terumasa Ikeda received Bizen Province. 2. At the time, Tokugawa Ieyasu's grandson ``Ikeda Tadatsugu/Childhood name: Fujimatsumaru (mother was Ieyasu's second daughter/Tokuhime''), who lived in this palace, became the lord of 280,000 koku of Okayama in Bizen Province at the age of just 5. Because of that. ◇Aside◇ There are 33 wells in the vast Himeji Castle, 13 of which currently exist, and the deepest of these is a well that is casually surrounded by a fence in front of the Bizen Maru's toilet, and is about 30 meters deep and 6 meters deep. By the way, the depth of the well at Ikaku Yagura is about 21m. Wells are an important facility for living in castles and for siege battles. Furthermore, the deepest well in any castle in Japan is the Ninomaru Well in Marugame Castle in Sanuki Province, which is approximately 65 meters deep. Buddhist temple
As you enter the area, your eyes will be drawn to the impressive Niomon gate. This designated cultural property, known as "Enkyoji Niomon," features a three-room, one-door gate constructed during the early Edo period. Flanking the gate are Nio statues, which are considered Himeji City-designated cultural properties. Don't miss the opportunity to strike the giant bell on your left with its hanging log for a truly memorable experience.

Zuiganji, the oldest temple in the Banshu region, boasts a reconstructed main hall dating back to 1670 under the supervision of Sakakibara Tadatsugu. The temple is situated along a mountainous road accessible from a parking lot where restroom facilities are available. Due to challenging terrain, it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear for hiking. Although the main hall may not always be open to visitors, it is recommended to contact ahead of time for confirmation.

It is built in the direction of Himeji Castle's Demon Gate, so there is a large grave within the grounds of Tadatsugu Sakakibara, the lord of Himeji, who worked hard to restore Suiganji Temple. The temple itself is deserted, but it is rich in nature, and wild parrot tits fly to eat sunflower seeds in front of the eaves of the chief priest's house, so while you are getting a stamp written on them, if you place the seeds on your palm, they will come and eat them. According to temple legend, it was founded by the Korean monk Eben, and restored by Gyoki around 730 during the Tenpyo era. During the Heian period, it was a large temple with 36 temples. It was attacked and burned down by Bessho Nagaharu in 1573, and rebuilt by Hideyoshi in 1586. During the Edo period, it was rebuilt and maintained by Sakakibara Tadatsugu, the lord of Himeji, as his family temple. The main hall, Bishamonten standing statue, and tomb Karamon gate are all nationally designated important cultural properties and are carefully constructed. By the way, I found out on the way back that there was a maintained road from the mountaintop parking lot to Zuiganji, but on the way there I walked up a rough mountain path, and I was wondering what to do on the way back, but I was so worried that I was about to leave.😭 (Original)

Nestled in the historic Old Yamamoto House, located in the Aboshi district of Himeji City, visitors can step back into a time when this area thrived. Built in 1917 by the prosperous Yamamoto family, known for their ventures in kimono wholesale and banking, this stunning Japanese-Western residence showcases an eclectic facade and an elegant interior that captivates all who enter. The iconic gazebo on the third floor stands as a testament to its architectural charm.
(Translated by Google) This is a Japanese-Western house built by the Yamamoto family, who made their fortune in the kimono wholesale and banking businesses. It was built in 1917. The gazebo on the third floor is the symbol of this house, and the eclectic façade is impressive, and the interior's elegant and elaborate structure is truly astonishing. If you go on the opening day, you will be accompanied by a guide who will show you around, and you will be intrigued by the anecdotal explanations, but personally, I will be fascinated by the fantastic corridors filled with stained glass and skylights that provide soft light. When I went there, I thought of the proud look on my husband's face when I saw the stylish design of the washroom, where the walls were covered in shells made from a combination of shells. Although a lot of money must have been spent on the construction, the garden is also beautiful and it is to be expected that nothing was overlooked. However, the main attraction is probably the way it looks in proportion to this area. Aboshi was spared from the air raids, so the townscape of the past remains, and the sight of the city standing there, with its rows of tiled roofs, has subtle dynamics and gaps in the scenery, and even a faint scent that hangs in the air. Isn't it only when we get a glimpse of it that we can see its true form? So, if you take a walk around this area, not just this house, you'll be more impressed by its charm, and you'll definitely fall in love with it. Especially near dusk, the sky is strangely clear and blue, reminding me of the sky of Mikuni in Fukui Prefecture, where the streets of the past still remain. I wonder if this sky appears due to the reflection of the series of dull-colored tiled roofs. It seems to be valuable in the sense that you can get a little taste of such a different world.

Historical landmark
The Remains of Aboshi Jinya offer a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich history, which dates back to ancient times when it served as a vital hub for water transport, particularly for timber from upstream. During the Edo period, this area was under the jurisdiction of the Himeji domain but later transitioned to the control of the Kyogoku family from Tatsuno domain. Following their relocation to Marugame, ownership shifted once again to the Marugame clan.
(Translated by Google) This area of Aboshi seems to have flourished since ancient times as a key point for water transport, such as timber brought from upstream. During the Edo period, it was a territory of the Himeji domain, but it seems that somewhere along the way it became a territory of the Kyogoku family of the Tatsuno domain. Later, when the Kyogoku family was transferred to Marugame, the area came to be owned by the Marugame clan as an enclave. During the Edo period, small-scale jinya and townhouses were built using the Ibo River for water transport, but other than the restored gate, the only thing remaining is the river flowing to the west. It is now a historical museum and can be visited. It seems that they had turrets and castle-like structures, but now it only has gates and you can't even enter the inside. In the early Edo period, it was Himeji Domain territory → in 1637, it was Tatsuno Domain territory → in 1658, the feudal lord Kyogoku Takakazu was transferred to the Marugame Domain → only 28 villages (10,000 koku) in the Aboshi area remained, and it was an exclave of the Marugame Domain until the Meiji era. Therefore, a jin'ya was established and magistrates and deputies were stationed to collect rice taxes, etc. It was demolished during the Meiji Restoration and only the gate remains.
