Himeji Castle, also known as Shirasagi-jo (White Egret Castle), is an iconic fortress with a white facade, towers, moats, and cherry trees. Its history dates back to the 14th century when the first castle was established on the site. The present-day castle was initiated by warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1581 and later expanded and remodeled to attain its grand scale.
This place is definitely worth the visit. Far different and more authentic than other castles that we have visited in Japan, the White Crane Castle remains largely in its original form. It is stunningly beautiful, and very well preserved. I strongly recommend taking the option for the limited access additional tour, where you get to see some other areas of the castle. The adjoining gardens were also very nice. Highly recommend going early, as this is a very popular location. Also - strongly recommend booking online to avoid the lineups.
WayneUS N — Google review
It is one of the most visited monuments in the country. But entry was surprisingly smooth even without any advance booking. There are non named ticket counters, where you can buy tickets easily. I bought the combo ticket of the castle and the Kokoen garden. The parts to cover are the main keep, the west bailey and the Sannomaru plaza. The main keep is the iconic structure and was largely used for defense. There are descriptions available in the castle which makes it easier to understand. Sannomaru plaza is where you can take a clear close up picture of the main keep. Do not miss the west bailey or nishinomaru. This is a group of buildings and gardens which served as the residence of Senhime, the daughter of a Shogun.
Chhanda B — Google review
Himeji Castle was amazing. It is best to visit in the morning getting as much natural light as possible. It is possible to do a trip to Himeji as well as going further to Hiroshima on the same day using the Shinkansen. Be warn it will be an early morning to do both trips in a day. From Himeji Train Station it is an easy 10-15 minute walk to the castle grounds. There are many shops and places to grab a quick breakfast or lunch depending what time of the day you arrive. Wear comfortable shoes since it's a gradual incline to the main castle keep. Be very aware you will have to climb steep staircases once inside the castle. We recommend bringing portable rechargeable fans, because you will sweat climbing the stairs. The views are very beautiful from the top. This excursion can be done in under 4 hours from the train station, up to the castle, and back to go to the next destination.

Amazing historic castle. Do not miss this one- very beautiful and the grounds are just as pretty. I went right at opening and there were no crowds but as I was leaving it was starting to get busier so go earlier to avoid them. Spend the extra 50 yen when buying your ticket online to get access to the gardens as it’s well maintained and beautiful, with koi fish in many of the ponds! One of the highlights of my Japan trip.

★★★★★ | An Absolute Masterpiece and Must-See Himeji Castle is not just a castle; it is the castle. Often referred to as the "White Heron" for its brilliant, elegant appearance, it is a stunning and awe-inspiring sight from the moment you exit the station and see it towering over the city. Unlike many reconstructed castles in Japan, Himeji is the real deal—an original 17th-century structure that has survived wars, earthquakes, and the passage of time. The main keep is a magnificent labyrinth of wooden stairs, ancient floors, and complex defensive features. Climbing to the top is a journey through history itself. You can feel the craftsmanship in the massive wooden beams and see the strategic design in the rifle ports and stone-dropping windows. The view from the summit over Himeji city is the reward for the climb, offering a commander's perspective of the land. The extensive grounds and multiple baileys are equally impressive, showcasing a sophisticated multi-layered defense system. The combination of the main keep with the nearby Kōko-en Garden creates a perfect half-day or full-day cultural experience that is unparalleled.
ANIKET K — Google review
This is an amazing site, but not for everyone. As you leave the station it looms over the city as you take the 20 minute walk as the view changes ever so slightly as you approach. Once inside it is a straight forward path through to the main keep, with several spots where you can roam a bit and take some pictures. The inside of castle is beautiful with a focus on the post and beam architecture. There are some smaller historical displays and helpful staff, but the interior highlight is the structure. This is where things may get off base for some. The passage through castle is a relatively straight path with little chance for deviation. Went early in fall at opening so the path was nice, but as it becomes crowded it would feel like trudging through a slow line. Beware the stairs up are VERY steep and they get worse as you go up. The tread height is also higher than normal. For many with bad knees etc it will not get easier and they are just as steep going down. Almost like a ladder at some points. The garden was only 50 yen more and was pretty, but it also followed a set path that took away from the serenity of a garden that I love. If you have time and there are no crowds I would do it. I wouldn’t make a special trip just for the garden. Also, there is a nice shoten gai parallel to main road that is worth taking back to station.
Kevin C — Google review
A most impressive castle. There are 6 floors to the building. The history is really interesting and the views are impressive from the top. However, the castle has some steep stairs and the crowds were really intense in the castle itself. It’s designed to be a one way path up and another path down. At some point there were so many people they blocked entry so that those from the top floors can leave from both sets of stairs.
Jonathan D — Google review
I went there early in the morning, to take some nice photos. It was nice castle, but I loved the gardens more cause it was peaceful calming and not a lot of people. Did a tea ceremony it was enjoyable learnt how to drink match in traditional way. I went on a boat which was front of the castle cost about 1500yen per adult.

Historical landmark
Koko-en Gardens, located near Himeji Castle in Japan, is a collection of nine themed traditional Japanese gardens. These gardens were built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Himeji municipality. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil vibe as they stroll through the 3.5-hectare area featuring water features and seasonal plants. The garden also includes a tea house where traditional Japanese tea ceremonies are held earlier in the day.
Very beautiful garden. It was clearly well taken care of. There is a clear discipline in how it is kept clean and plants pruned. It was really beautiful to understand the different gardens and how each was styled. It was quite big as well with 12~ gardens to visit. We spent so much time there that we even lacked time to do the boat tour around the castle.
Jeff W — Google review
Much more pleasant and peaceful than inside the castle. Don’t miss it. There’s a tea house inside but it’s currently closed. Maybe bring or apply before coming some bug repellent, otherwise you’ll probably get bitten. Our tickets to the castle included the entrance to the gardens, and I believe most do.
André M — Google review
We visited the garden on a saturday in autumn right after we went to himeji castle. Just like the castle, the garden felt extremely crowded. Most of the flowers and ponds in the garden are nicely arranged and well maintained. However, due to it not being one open garden but it being separated into multiple smaller "compartments", we didn't get the calm, serene feeling we usually got at other gardens and parks in japan.
Lea F — Google review
Very beautiful garden that is easy to navigate and even has a recommend route to finish efficiently. Lots of wonderful fall foliage at this time and lots of ponds and small streams. There is the option for a combo ticket with himeji castle, so I recommend that option so you can hit both on the same trip
Brandon S — Google review
Marvelous gardens near Himeji-jo castle. Several separate Gardens linked together with great landscapes, glimpses of Hinegi castle on the distance and lovely water features with a vast variety of koo fish connected by walkway stones. Theybalso had an impressive ichibana exhibit when we visited.
Joe B — Google review
Kokoen garden entry is beside the Himeji castle entry. You can buy combo ticket for the garden and the castle. It is a relatively newly established garden. It is a beautiful garden divided into various gardens. You can walk around exploring the various gardens.
Chhanda B — Google review
While Himeji Castle is of course impressive and worth seeing, for me the real highlight was Kōko-en Garden right next to it. It’s beautifully designed, with different sections that each have their own character — ponds, small waterfalls, and perfectly kept greenery everywhere. Peaceful, scenic, and a perfect place to slow down after visiting the castle.
Christoph P — Google review
I have been to Himeji Castle 4 times, and I had never been to Koko-en. This time I made the effort to explore the gardens and I was impressed. I took one of my favourite photos here, with a golden Koi causing the water to glisten in the sun.

Museums
The Himeji City Museum of Art, situated near the iconic Himeji Castle, has been a cultural hub since its establishment in 1983. The museum showcases an extensive collection of both local and international art, including works by renowned Japanese and Western artists. Housed in a charming brick building with a view of the castle, the museum offers visitors access to over 3,700 pieces of art. Its mission is to promote art appreciation within the community through curated exhibitions and art libraries.
The Museum of Art is well worth a visit. If you would like a beautiful photo opportunity of Himeji Castle at night, visit the small walking path behind the Himeji City Museum of Art where tall thick tree trunks are scattered near the castle wall. It's worth a visit.

210¥ per an adult. A great art musuem and a place to cool down. The little cafe had juice and a donut! Took me 30 minutes to get through the first floor and have a snack. The 2nd floor was closed.
Yuuki A — Google review
Decent permanent and temporary exhibit. Primarily came for the TeamLab exhibit and it was ok--the one in Odaiba is definitely a lot better. The art permanent exhibit is ok, there were a couple cool paintings. Place is pretty small, probably at most a one hour visit.
Nicholas P — Google review
Nice place. The permanent exhibit is small, but also low cost. The limited time exhibit was interesting. The statue outside was my favorite part.
Josh B — Google review
Quite interesting that they got a collection of French impressionist here
Bang T — Google review
A nice little art museum, it took me about 45 minutes to see all of it, including the special exhibit which is the longest segment by far, so not the most expansive collection. There is no info in English except for a blurb about the permanent gallery which explains where it came from. Otherwise titles are in their original language and any info in the piece/artist is in Japanese. Definitely a museum for those who are really interested in art as there is nothing so incredible in the normal collection that you need to see.
Zane H — Google review
The museum was small - only two galleries on one floor. There was a cafe outside - it was quite cozy.
Roy C — Google review
It's a nice place for a short visit on the way back from Himeji castle and nearby gardens, and it's not as crowded as the aforementioned nearby places. In fact, I was there alone for most of those approximately 30 minutes I've spent there. It was also a good place to hide from heat since I was in Himeji in August, and outside temperature was over 35°C that day.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Engyoji, a large Buddhist temple complex founded in 966, is situated on the mountaintop of Mount Shosha, surrounded by lush forest. The area offers a serene hiking trail and boasts impressive temple structures dating back over 1000 years. Known as the 'Hieizan of the West,' Engyoji features numerous halls and pagodas amidst verdant greenery.
A temple complex on top of Mount Shosha. To reach the mountain top, you could either hike the mountain or ride the cable car. I chose the cable car (highly recommended), but there is still 15-20 minutes of inclined walking from the ropeway to the temple through a path surrounded by the forest. My corporate slave joints are complaining but my eyes and lungs are full of gratitude. I went in late spring so there was no cherry blossoms or autumn leaves. However, the green foliage also felt so rewarding. The temple has a wooden stage which is like a balcony, similar to Kiyomizu-dera. There were not many visitors as well, making it perfect for a calm retreat. We could also explore the areas surrounding the main temple building.
Janice L — Google review
Engyoji Buddhist Temple is a must visit to see a glimpse of Japan's history and culture. Its massive wooden temples are living masterpieces. Tom Cruise's Last Samurai was also filmed here. This is situated on a mountain, ride a cable car then a 700m uphill trek with a difficulty of 5-6. A service coaster is available at the entrance for older people to get to the main temple.
Kaloi — Google review
The most magical place I've ever been to. You take the ropeway up to the stop. You can either take a bus or hike your way up. I would recommend to walk your way down after taking the bus up. This place is so serene and calming.
Reem Q — Google review
The Engyoji temple is a significant Buddhist temple located on Mount Shosha in Himeji. The temple complex is huge but main parts to cover are the Maniden, Jogyodo, Daikodo, Jikido. You can dedicate an ema for wish fulfilment at Maniden. The Maniden can be reached via a walk up the mountain from the ropeway station. The walk up is around fifteen minutes and has many Kannon statues on the way. Or you can take a shuttle but it comes at some intervals. Majority of the important places to visit are located within five to ten minutes of walk. But also except for Mani den, many of the buildings are not open for public.
Chhanda B — Google review
Take bus 10 from Himeji Bus station to Ropeway stop to Engyoji Temple. Scenic view of Himeji along the ropeway up to the temple. Entrance ticket price is 500 yen. I suggest walking up to Maniden and Daikodo-Jikodo-Jogyodo (Scenes of the Last Samurai movie by Tom Cruise) and taking the bus back to the ropeway (500 yen for both ways or one way. You can make paymemt by cash at the entrance or while boarding the bus). Nice place to spend a morning walk. It can get hot and warm in the later part of the day in summer so prepare to drink more water and wear a hat. Check the timing of the ropeway and bus back to Himeji station. You could also inform the driver if you would like to visit Kokoen Garden or Hemiji Castle as there is a bus stop outside Kokoen Garden. This route is better as after visiting the castle, you will be nearer to Himeji main station and can get a late lunch along the streets.
Siew T — Google review
The cable car ride up to Engyō-ji was great, and I really enjoyed the nature and peaceful atmosphere once there. The temple complex is beautiful and feels wonderfully calm — a nice contrast to the busy city below. Only downside was that Google’s route planning for the way back wasn’t the best, but the visit itself was absolutely worth it.
Christoph P — Google review
Wonderful despite the rain. Took the bus to the ropeway. Gondola takes 4 min. Paid 1000 yen (500 for temple and 500 for shuttle). You could walk 20 min instead of using the shuttle. You will need to remove your shoes to enter temples. Overall, it was nice and glad we had a guide.
Christa D — Google review
This temple is what I imagine from Japan, more than amazing buildings and rebuilt shrines and castles like a lot of other temples is a true marvel this huge temple complex is maintained so beautifully natural. A must go if you visit Himeji

Zoo
Himeji City Zoo is a popular attraction located in the Hyogo Prefecture, nestled at the base of Himeji Castle. This enduring zoo features classic rides and a small amusement park within its compact space. As one of the busiest places in the city, it sees hundreds of visitors daily and is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The architecture reflects an old-fashioned style, adding to its charm.
This is a great little zoo, perfect for kids! It's a small zoo that opened in 1951, they have a wide variety of animals and it's a nice area to walk around and check out. The zoo could definitely use some more funding, so please come visit and help them improve the animals exhibits. Great views of the castle as well! Expect that this is a small quiet zoo with lots of people working hard to keep the animals happy and clean. There are vending machines, drinks, and ice cream inside as well as plenty of benches and kids rides - swings, mini coasters, and trains!
Julianna W — Google review
200¥ per adult. The zoo has a back in time feel. If you have little kids I would recommend or if you're cutting through the zoo to explore the entire park area. I didn't look at everything as I was heading to Kokoen garden. Some animals had great enclosures and some didn't. The bear was clearly in distress. Lizards, birds and smaller animals were happy. They had a place to rest and grab a drink and ice cream from vending machines. The zoo has a stamp.
Yuuki A — Google review
Don't think I have ever given a 1 star review before. This is a terrible zoo, please view photos and videos on my review before going. The bear and lion have a tiny space that is concrete and no outside area or even natural floor. only concrete. The hippo likewise has a tiny concrete area. Ostriches and giraffes similar shameful tiny and un natural enclosures. Should be shut down or at least all large animals removed immediately. Have been to zoos where the lion enclosure is the size of the entire zoo. Please don't give them your money.
Steve&alfie — Google review
One of the saddest and most disturbing places I’ve ever been to. Despite being located next to the beautiful Himeji Castle, the Himeji Zoo felt much more like the setting of a horror game than a fun place for families/animal lovers. Many of the animals looked sick, lethargic, or mentally distressed. Some animals had tumors and strange growths on them, and mostly appeared motionless. Not that they even had very much room to move around in, the cages were tiny barren concrete cages, that appeared to hardly be cleaned. Food was just dumped onto the floor leaving it to be swarmed by flies and rot under the Japanese summer heat. Animals were left without water as well. The brown bear in particular was haunting to witness. Thin, disheveled, pacing nonstop in a tiny enclosure, with what looked like a large tumor on its stomach and possibly foaming at the mouth. Clearly it was suffering from zoochosis, the other animals were no better. A lone macaw kept screeching hoarsely as if it was crying out for help. The zoo grounds themselves were eerily empty, overgrown, and unkempt. The old rides appeared abandoned, and the entrance fee was shockingly low (250 円), which may hint at how underfunded/neglected this place is. This zoo does not meet modern standards of animal care or welfare. I left feeling greatly disturbed, heartbroken and concerned for the animals still trapped there. Please think twice before supporting this facility, the animals deserve better.
Mirade K — Google review
Entrance tickets were only 250¥, and as we had 2 hours to spare we decided to visit the zoo. We were quite disturbed by what we witnessed. Animal cages were far too small and it seemed they were going crazy. Large animals like the bear, lions, hippopotumas going round and round in circles in 3 metre square pens. Large birds that couldn't fly. Monkeys literally going mad! Other animals staring into a corner like the giraffe and camel and others. Frantic sealions and penguins swimming in circles. Cages looked very tired and dirty. Very disturbing and distressing to see animals treated this way. This facility needs to be closed down. What a disgrace! Shame on you!
Linda M — Google review
Surely needs to be shutdown. The only saving grace is that little kids look happy to be took here by there grandparents. The animals look rightfully depressed in their small cages and in such small numbers. The castle and gardens nearby were nice
SmallmanXS — Google review
Disgusting, disturbing, inhumane, half the animals looked half dead and the other half wanted to die. They have patches of fur and feathers missing and many have tumors. No place for arctic or african animals nor do they treat their own countries animals well either
Quintin H — Google review
The location is nice and spacious, it’s near Himeji Castle. However, some of the animals seem lonely or isolated and some cages seemed like they needed more cleaning. 🥺

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History is an engaging destination for history enthusiasts and families alike. Situated near Himeji Castle, the museum offers a comprehensive exploration of local history, featuring exhibits on Himeji Castle and the Hyogo region's heritage. Visitors can immerse themselves in the past through small-scale models, floor plans, and displays showcasing famous temples and statues. Additionally, the museum boasts a children's play area and a 3D cinema room for an interactive experience.
A perfect choice to visit if you're heading to Himeji. For adults, it's 200 JPY/person for entrance for paid floor(2nd floor). 1st floor is free to visit. (However, I strongly recommend you to visit 2nd floor as well.) It has a wide collection of Hyogo prefectural historic stuff which is mainly focused on architecture and entertainment(matsuri, etc.). However, there aren't enough english materials for foreign traveller, so you might not understand of texts in there well. Despite such things, still, it's worth to visit. Overall tour time will probably be about 60 to 90 minutes.

For tourists visiting Japan, this is a great example of when you go to a main attraction, look for the hidden gems nearby, because they are always there. Any visitor to Himeji who wants to investigate & delve into understanding the history of this beautiful town should visit the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History.

The museum offers an observatory on the fifth floor, providing a stunning view of the castle from atop Mount Otoko. Designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, the minimalist structure seamlessly integrates concrete and glass with natural elements.
Went for the Hana to Yume exhibition. It was a really nice exhibition over three rooms. The entrance fee was reasonable and it was easy to get to the museum by public transportation.
Ivy A — Google review
For non-Japanese speakers, this museum is only interesting for the architecture of Tadao Ando. We walked through the path, took a couple of pictures of the building and went right to Boukeitei, the adjacent traditional house which is free to visit.
Fernando H — Google review
No translations are available, so this museum is a complete waste of time for non-Japanese speaking tourists. The only interesting exhibit I saw was the temporary special exhibition, which requires a separate ticket. There’s a small Japanese-style home, but it’s not worth a trip. Worst of all, the building itself looks like a prison. (July 2019)

Beautiful architecture! But the display is only in Japanese.

For long term visitors of Himeji, I recommend visiting Himeji's Museum of Literature. The Forest of Words display was enjoyable for me. The museum also has historical information about the Harima area & Himeyama, the mountain which Himeji Castle is built upon, which began as a small fort.

Restaurant
Located within the peaceful Koko-en Garden, Kassui-ken restaurant provides a tranquil dining experience with stunning views of the garden and pond. The Japanese menu showcases conger eel dishes, rice bowls, and noodle options. No reservations are required, allowing guests to appreciate the beautiful garden scenery while relishing their meal. Additionally, visitors can also indulge in seasonal Japanese sweets and matcha tea at the Sojuan tea ceremony room within Koko-en Garden.
It was super crowded and we had to reserve our table, go around the garden and then get back once the table was free. Still worth it! What a view from the restaurant! Magnificent.... The food was amazing as well. The whole vibe of the place is so soothing and calm. Lovely lunch we had from here.
Sujay S — Google review
After a walk through the castle and the gardens, we enjoyed a delicious lunch within the garden compound. My wife enjoyed the beef that you cooked yourself, where as I enjoyed the Eel Rice set. Both were very delicious, and very reasonable priced. We paired our meals with a Sake Tasting Set each, which was generous and tasty. We finished our meal with a Matcha Dessert set & Japanese Sweet set with coffee. The perfect end to a delightful meal. The staff were very friendly and attentive, adding to the relaxed atmosphere. As there was a small queue, we took our ticket before walking the gardens. The timing could not have been more perfect. As it was only the two of us, we were called a little earlier than our turn as a small table was available. Our table had a great view of the Koi Pond. Thanks for a great experience! ☺️

I came at 11am when they opened and already there was a 90min queue. But the wait was worth it. Excellent views and food to die for. The beef dish was the best I have tasted so far. The matcha ice cream perfectly tops it all off Suggest come early and get a ticket to wait. In summary Michelin star restaurant views and quality food at affordable prices

After visiting the Himeji Castle, the next stop is to visit the gorgeous garden next door. This restaurant is in the garden and it has great food and spectacular view for a very reasonable price point. There is a bit of wait so be patient; it's worth it!

Had the best food of my entire vacation here! Steak was delicious, and the restaurant is really beautiful. There was no wait for our table, but we saw a queue when we left, so arriving early might be good.

We made reservations in advance by phone. We have to order the food prior. Also, some menu is limited per day. tho we came in weekday around 1PM, it was not so packed, the wait would be around 5-10 mins if you walk-in. The food was great. The price was reasonable. We enjoyed the food and the view so much. It was one of the most enjoyable meals in Japan we had.

Water & Amusement Parks
Theme park
Taiyō Park in Himeji is a large theme park featuring replicas of famous global landmarks and castles. Visitors can explore over 70 miniature replicas of stone monuments from around the world, including the Great Wall of China. The park also boasts a German-inspired replica castle with various 3D images for fun photo opportunities. Created by a philanthropist, the park aims to provide an opportunity for people with travel difficulties to experience iconic attractions from different parts of the world without leaving Japan.
Now hear this – the castle is the ONLY place in this park you should visit! Me and my friends were treated to 4 floors of awful 'art' and I must be honest – it was so extremely funny! We couldn't stop laughing through the first two floors after coming out of the elevator on the 7th floor. I mean there was a room with a chest filled with folium in one corner and a random tree stump in the other - hilarious. Definitely do this if you have a sense of humour. The other part of the park with the smaller landmarks is not really worth going.
Marko M — Google review
The area and replicas are good. However, the place lacks maintenance except for a few major objects. Moreover, the area itself is quite difficult to reach; there are no train lines nearby and the location and timing of bus stops is not clear. I went on a Sunday and yet there were hardly a few people around; which shows that accessibility is a major deterring factor in enjoying this place.
Haikener K — Google review
I came here around 3 PM when it was sunny, so the scenery was beautiful. However, the castle was built nearly 20 years ago, and the rooms inside that are used for taking photos are no longer very nice. But you’re free to walk around without being watched by the staff, which makes the atmosphere very relaxing.
Lily L — Google review
During the week it feels empty and gives off a deserted vibe. Cool to see the replicas from all around the world!

Taiyo Park in Himeji is a must-visit attraction for those exploring the area. Rated 4/5, this park offers a unique blend of nature and culture, featuring replicas of famous structures from around the world. It's an excellent place for photography enthusiasts and families looking to enjoy a day out amidst beautiful surroundings. The park is conveniently accessible by bus from Himeji Station, making it a straightforward trip. However, it's worth noting that the return bus schedule is less frequent, often requiring a wait of about an hour to get back to the station. While the park is stunning and offers an enjoyable experience, some of the structures show signs of neglect, with maintenance not being as frequent as it should be. Despite this, the overall charm and the variety of attractions make Taiyo Park a worthwhile visit. Whether you're marveling at the replicas or enjoying a peaceful stroll through the scenic landscapes, this park provides a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just be sure to plan your return trip accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.
Tứ N — Google review
It feels like a total scam to me.It kept saying that it’s a historical building. But the time you arrived, you’ll find out it turns out to be a normally modern building covered by the castle appearance. And then when you go inside the castle expecting to know the history of the castle, it turns out to be a total joke. In the castle you can only see the fake Euro exhibits such as throne and swords that look like they borrowed from some stage theaters. For the tourists not yet fell into the trap, I highly not recommend you to come here.
Ian H — Google review
Interesting place to visit. You have a castle; inside is a variety of 3D painted rooms which you can take photos of. Have fun and be creative. Theme changes depending on the season. Then if you take a short bus ride, you will find a copy of statues, art of different culture such as mexican gods, temples, chinese army and so on. Again, quite a creative place, well made replicas. The food is average. I reckon eat somewhere else first before coming.
Melody M — Google review
So glad I dragged my Japanese friend here. This place is crazy. We never made it to the castle (and didn't know we were supposed to purchase a ticket) but had a blast wandering through all the sculpture gradens. By turns surreal, kitschy, macabre, beautiful, and disturbing. Well worth a visit if you're in Himeiji and already saw the castle!

Sushi restaurant
Totoro is a popular standing sushi restaurant located in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. Despite its small size and standing-room-only setup, it offers delicious and reasonably-priced sushi, including their specialty Extra Fatty Bluefin Tuna Nigiri that melts in the mouth. The restaurant's unique atmosphere and friendly staff contribute to its popularity, often resulting in long wait times for a spot at the counter.
Had the BEST sushi ive ever had in my entire life. The trip to Himeji only for this restaurant is definetely worth it. And the price was incredible The quality and expertise of this restaurant would cost triple the amount in Mexico (where im from). The total was ¥7920 for me and my husband and we ate a lot. Also the service is amazing everyone is super nice.
Mariana M — Google review
We were on our way to Himeji Castle and decided to have lunch at 1230hrs. There was already a line of over 15 people, and the wait could be over an hour. We decided to come back at 1645hrs and waited in line for the restaurant to open at 1700hrs. It is a cozy standing sushi bar with room for about 10 customers. The sushi was definitely value for money and extremely fresh. It is not a place to linger while you eat as there was already a long line waiting both inside and outside the restaurant. You order your food while waiting in line, and the sushi is ready when you take your standing seat. It's definitely worth the experience if you happen to be visiting Himeji Castle. The restaurant is about a 5 minute walk from Himeji train station.

Very good quality sushi at a fair price. I doubt you’ll find better in the city. Both set and a la carte menus available, the set comes with a discounted drink. Service is quick and abrupt, as it should be in such establishments. Standing room is about 10 persons max so turnaround time is essential Worth a visit for sure
James T — Google review
I found this shop on Tabelog and decided to give it a try, since I was in the area photographing Himeji Castle. This is a standing bar style sushi spot - the counter seats (or stands) about 10 people, and there are a couple of private tables in the back for slightly larger groups. I got here around 6:30PM, and already, there was a line wrapping around the building, maybe 20 people deep. It took about 50 minutes of waiting to get seated, but your wait time will heavily depend on the size of groups ahead of you. An employee will hand you a menu while you're in line for you to order from, and the sushi will be ready for you when you get inside. They do have an English menu, should you need one. I ordered the special deluxe nigiri set, with the added draft beer + edamame set. The nigiri set came with flounder, spear squid, raw jumbo shrimp, ark shell clam, tamago, yellowtail otoro, salmon otoro, tuna otoro, and a whole piece of anago in nigiri form. All the fish was incredibly fresh and tasty - the fatty pieces in particular literally melted on the tongue. Total cost of the set was 2,250yen (+380 yen for the beer set), which is absurdly good value for the quality of fish you're getting. If you're ever in the area, I would consider this a must-visit. Don't be daunted by the line - this is well worth your time. Note: the restaurant is cash only, and has a small seating area up front for those waiting.
Alex — Google review
This place is worth the wait. I arrived at about 11:30 on a Saturday and waited around 1 hour before being served. Your food comes out almost as soon as you get to the counter. It is eaten while standing. The staff spoke little English but were very patient with me and helped me understand everything with no issue. They handed me an English menu while I was in line, and I ordered the Special Grade Sushi Set. It comes with wasabi already on it, but they asked if I wanted it taken off (I did not). You stand at the counter and eat. Then when you are done, you walk around the corner and pay. The sushi was incredible - easily the best I have ever had. It was an unforgettable experience.
Elizabeth B — Google review
Worth the wait! Insane sushi, standing bar. Great drinks too. English menu to assist but only filled with locals. We got there at opening hour 5pm, had to wait about half an hour. Sits about 12 people only, great quality sushi. You can order sets or individual. Located near train station, not inside. Easy to find.

Super foreigner friendly sushi restaurant!!! Fresh and delicious! Must go if you visit Himeji!
Weewee L — Google review
Amazing sushi! It's a standing sushi bar* but totally worth it. If there's a queue then someone will come and take your order so that by the time you get your slot on the bar your food is ready. The otoro (tuna belly) is melt in the mouth. I also recommend the chotoro. I also recommend the beef tongue nigiri. Sets start at 890yen - 1500yen Staff are friendly and helpful. *Despite being stand up sushi bar... there are some rooms in the back. For seated dining

Himeji Central Park, located in Himeji, Japan, offers a diverse range of attractions for visitors. The park features a scenic drive-through safari park where guests can observe over 1,200 animals and birds from different parts of the world. Additionally, there is an amusement park with thrilling rides such as a Ferris wheel and roller coasters. During the summer months, visitors can cool off in the pool while in winter they can enjoy ice-skating at the park's rink.
Excellent place for family to visit! You can drive your own car to the safari and see lots of animals. My kiddo loved it so much! Also, you can pay a small price to feed different animals, like pony, sheep, turtle, ducks and so on. Favourite part is definitely feeding the capybara 🤍 Water park is also lovely. Don’t forget to go early and spend the whole day there so you have enough time for all the parks.

Himeji Central Park Safari was truly an amazing experience. Driving through the safari zone and seeing lions, tigers, giraffes, zebras, and many other animals so close felt like being in the middle of the wild. Watching the animals move freely in such a natural environment was powerful and exciting, something you cannot easily experience at a regular zoo. The staff were also very kind and helpful, providing clear guidance that made the visit safe and comfortable. This is a place where both children and adults can enjoy and feel inspired, so I highly recommend it for families as well as couples. In addition to the safari, there is also an amusement park and a pool area, which makes it easy to spend the entire day without getting bored. The access is convenient, the parking space is wide, and everything was well organized. Visiting here became one of the most unforgettable memories of my time in Himeji, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who comes to the area.

A fantastic family day out (family of four, children 6 and 2). Went on a Friday and aside from a few school groups, both the safari park and amusement park were very very quiet. I imagine it gets much busier in on the weekends/school breaks. Were able to drive around the safari at a leisurely pace and stop to see many animals. It is the perfect size and takes about 30 mins to get around. The amusement park is a little old but we all had a great time. My 6-year old son is over 120cm so could go on almost all the rides (aside from a couple of the larger roller-coasters) and there was plenty for my youngest son to enjoy free-of-charge too. Highly recommended.
David K — Google review
You'll get a mix of newer and old rides. If you're planning to spend the day there then just buy a day pass out better a yearly pass. A lot of rides aren't worth the price of the entrance, between 300 and 1000 yen can become quite expensive to do them individually. They had quite a few places closed but you'll still pay the full price of entry of course. They are adding a few more rollercoasters and fixing the old ones. They have quite a few rides for small kids too. The food was ok, you can bring your own though. Pool, skate rink, seating areas, BBQ area and just about anything you can think of.

Bakery Lamp is a charming bakery and cafe located near Himeji Castle, offering a delightful selection of freshly baked bread, pastries, and mouthwatering burgers. The cozy space with woodsy decor provides a welcoming atmosphere to enjoy their delectable treats. Despite its small size, the bakery can get quite crowded during peak hours, so it's advisable to be prepared for potential wait times or consider ordering takeout.
Easily noticed from the street, the signs, the smell and the feel all told it was a good burger place. I was wrong, it was great! The burger was perfect, meaty, well seasoned, well made and the buns are perfect. It is bakery so the brioche style buns were superb. From order to serving took about 5-10 minutes but the seating has charging stations and they are comfortable.

Very cute and cozy bakery with tasty pastries and snacks. We stopped in the morning before visiting the castle. The entrance is hidden in a little alley and the place was what I (as a tourist) had in mind as a very Japanese feeling spot.

This place is a must visit when you are coming to Himeji! They have a wide variety of unique pastries I haven't seen anywhere in Japan. I've tried the cheese edamame bread, and it was delicious. The mandarine honey bagel was very good too. They sell burgers too which I wish I had taken instead of stupiditly going to Burger King... so I might come back in the future, and I'll give it a go. 5 stars!

Yamayoshi is a cozy and popular restaurant known for its specialty in anago, or conger eel. The simple menu offers options like the una-don (eel served on rice) or the set meal, which includes an appetizer, rice, soup, and pickles. The unique sauce used in their dishes emits a captivating aroma that will leave you eager to indulge.
After visiting Himeji Castle, we found this store that focus on eel. We tried both ways of grilling eels (with and without sauce). They have different textures and different tastes. Depends on if you liked more or less flavors. The soup is for you to eat it with the rice which is also tasty. The only thing about this place is that the seats are a little too crowded but luckily we went there in the afternoon so there were only two groups eating lunch (us and someone else).
Daisy H — Google review
A bit pricey. Be careful with the fish bone, chew slowly! I prefer eel with more source to add flavour to the rice. The seats are small and packed. Lucky that there was not many custkmers. QR code to make order, but translation is not available.

The worst dining experience in Japan so far - not only the place is very dirty and smelly, the attitude of personnel feels totally out of place. We haven’t faced this amount of neglect for a long time - half of tables were empty, 1 table was covered with takeaway bags, and these, coupled with already small sitting area, just inflated lines artificially. We were not given any wait time estimates or reactions from the folks. Totally not fun, the only recommendation is for the owner of this place to pay attention to these obvious improvement needs. Btw, we’ve asked a waiter to provide the complaint book or share WhatsApp of the owner - haven’t received either of these. Still happy to chat with the decision maker here and provide more robust feedback.

(Trip was made back then on 6 Dec 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Sumiyaki Anago Yamayoshi is supposedly very popular and has been recommended by several websites for their thick, tender and juicy eels. We personally tried it for ourselves yesterday and though the food might look appetising, the taste leaves a lot to be desired. The eel was nothing like what the reviews mentioned. It was so tough and dry that I thought the poor eel was tortured to death. For the kind of price, we could get better quality eels elsewhere. Heck, even the frozen eel from supermarket would be better (and cheaper too) than what they served here. If you have enemies or people you hate, recommend them to come here!
Shingo — Google review
We just had the last 5 of 8 eel rice bowl before the restaurant closed. Will never regret waiting in line for the eel rice. The eel is freshly grilled and tasty amazing. One demerit of this restaurant is that the space is too tight and you will feel so crowded and kinda hot when enjoying the eel rice.
Jason W — Google review
A small restaurant that creates lines on purpose, taste is not very particular, service is bad - we were waiting outside while looking at empty tables. Do not recommend
Amir M — Google review
Pretty good grilled eel rice! Not sure if it was worth the wait though. It's also very smokey inside so hide any jackets you don't want smelling!
David W — Google review
Very good eel rice! Staffs were very sweet to provide all of us with soups and hot tea. However, the shop is very small so if people walk in and out the restaurant might bump into you. They grilled the eel inside the restaurant so your clothes must catch the smell.

Castle Garden, also known as Sunken Garden, is situated in front of Himeji Station and offers a modern twist on traditional Japanese gardens. Constructed from solid cement, this creative space features nine distinct walled gardens designed in various Edo period styles. Opened in 1992 to celebrate the centenary of Himeji City, the garden boasts stunning fall foliage and captivating night lighting.
Castle garden will not gonna disappoint you. It has a breathtaking view and landscapes. It’s not expensive so I’ll recommend to take this as well. They also offer tee ceremony inside.. there you have to pay extra it’s not a lot so if you’re not in a hurry I’ll recommend to take this as well. Just a small Info. The garden is not inside where the castle is you have to go outside again and it’s on the left side if your facing at the castle.

The shrine's Mitsuyama-taisai festival is a significant cultural event held every 20 years since 1533, featuring rituals and traditional clothing. Mitsuyama-taisai is a festival of cultural property in Japan. It have been held once every 20 years since 1533. Mitsuyama means "three mountains", actually you can see three big mountain-shaped objects that are capable of calling Japanese spirits during the festival. Former festival was held for 31 march to 7 April in 2013. The next will be held in 2033. If have an opportunity to come, you will be able to see rituals, people wearing traditional clothes.

I think for a small city the shinto shrines and temples are top notch. 👍 The tourists in and around the shrine should be happy and proud of all the updates, repairs, and additions to the shrines. (。☬0☬。) The renovation of Kuroda Kanbei shrine is outstanding. (Translated by Google) It is a shrine with many things to see. A very large shrine, many shrines, and the main shrine of Gozu Tenno. He is also associated with the famous tactician Kuroda Kanbei. Also, you can visit Kusei Pilgrimage, which is not available at other shrines. It was my first time to visit the shrine properly and it is a wonderful shrine. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach the tower gate by visiting Tenso-sha Shrine, which goes up to the right from the torii gate in the parking lot. But it's a difficult road to walk. I took the paved road home, but it took about the same amount of time. In this case, the correct answer might be to head for the main shrine first and then go via Tensosha Shrine later. Behind the main shrine, there are many set shrines for Kusei pilgrimage, and further back there is Iwaza and two other set shrines. It's about 10 minutes from the main shrine, but you'll have to walk a bit on a mountain path. This is the main shrine of Gozu Tenno, which is quite large compared to other countries in Japan, and has a unique way of worshiping. This is a shrine that we highly recommend visiting. The main deity is Susanoo-no-Mikoto (Gozu Tenno), and it was founded in 733 by the Minister of the Right, Kibi no Makibi. It was revered as the guardian deity of Banshu. The front worship hall was built in the Momoyama period and is 10 ken in length. Behind the main hall are nine rare holes where the gods of the nine stars, from Ichihaku Suisei to Kyushi Kasei, reside. Nestled in a rural setting just north of the city, Japan Toy Museum is a renowned attraction known for its beautiful castle and extensive collection of toys. Housed in six traditional warehouses with tasteful folkcraft interiors, the museum showcases over 80,000 toys and dolls from various eras and over 150 countries. Originally the residence of famous toy collector Shigeyoshi Inoue, it now boasts an impressive collection dating back to the 1960s.
A nice cosy place where you can learn about the evolution of traditional Japanese toys. We were lucky enough to have the founder giving us a live demonstration of how some of the traditional toys like spinning tops work. It was fun getting hands on with some of the traditional toys, reminding us of simpler times. We were in time to catch the Christmas Special Exhibition. Some toys from around the world were also housed in another building. It was a unique experience and admission fee was 600yen/ adult. Although a little far off from the city, the trip was enriching and well worth it. More awed to read the brochure about how the founder converted his own home into a museum in order to showcase his private collection of toys! Truly a testament of how following your passion can sometimes lead to building remarkable things! We visited during the winter and the kerosene burners became overwhelming after a while. Otherwise, it was a most pleasant trip and I would like to contribute some traditional Singaporean toys if I get the chance.

We visited this toy museum during a day trip to Himeji while our cruise ship was docked at Kobe port and loved it! The town was so serene and peaceful and it was really novel and interesting to learn about history through toys. It was also really fun to play with some with some of them and explore the cute little gift shop. The staff were also really kind, gifting us with some origami as a parting gift and the owner even drove us back to the train station.

Amazing! I can't recommend this place enough. It's the collection of one person. We met him and he showed us how to use some of the toys. The price is very cheap and we got a memorable experience that felt honest, Interactive and personal and got to see an impressive collection of toys and dolls from all over the world. The museum shop is also cool and isn't too expensive. Go there if you have the time, definitely worth it.

Very happy that I chose to visit this museum. I was going to see other museums in the area but they were closed (maybe because of bad weather?). But the toy museum was open and was a fantastic display. They have areas where children can play with some classic japan toys. It was surprising to see some toys that made their way to the American market as well, transformers, furby, robo dog, and of course pokemon. More than toys they have exquisite dolls and handicraft on display. I think everyone will find something interesting here. Skip the nintendo museum and come here instead if you want real Japanese culture.
Jay F — Google review
Fantastic medium sized museum of toys from around Japan and other countries as well. The focus is on handmade toys so fans of handicrafts will also enjoy the exhibits. Explanations are mostly limited to country of origin and are provided in Japanese and English. Photos are allowed. A variety of wooden toys are available to play with but most of the items are behind glass. Despite the name, the museum is a labor of love by one man who built the collection with donated items over the past 50 years! I worry about the future of this collection as he is now in his 80s. Visit soon! There's also a membership program to help with the upkeep. I came by car as it's a fair distance from Himeji or Kobe but it is possible to visit but public transportation if you have time to spare.

Located near Himeji Castle, Kushiyaki Kobe beef is a cozy restaurant offering a blend of Western and Japanese flavors through its Kobe beef dishes. The standout Kobe beef burger features thinly sliced Kobe beef with greens and mayo sauce. Despite its small size, the restaurant offers delicious options like Kobe beef skewers and rice bowls at reasonable prices. With a simple menu and generous servings, it's worth trying both the skewers and rice bowl to experience the different cuts of beef.
Awesome place to get a meal after a long walk through Himeji Castle. Note the place only sits 6 people but you can get take away and use some public tables nearby. We ordered the Kobe beef bowl and one of each of the skewers. The beef is exceptional and very high quality. The sauce that comes with the rice and also the skewers is perfectly balanced without being overpowering so you can still taste the sweet beef flavour. Highly recommend trying, the beef is tender and the rice is soft and fluffy.

Kobe beef was the best, melt in your mouth buttery smooth steak I’ve ever had in my life. At ¥2,500 this is an affordable way to experience the legendary, hyped up beef. The wagyu was okay. I’d recommend you prioritize ordering the kobe. Fast service. Six seats inside. Food taste just as good to-go and there are lots of public areas near by.

Delicious Kobe beef 👍 pan-fried one by one immediately after order. It’s a very small shop with only 6 seats. Value for money. The local young guys work there always wear smiles and speak good English.

Dine in or takeaway if you cannot wait to dine in because the place only has 6 seats. Order and payment was placed at the front and we were given a number to wait for our seats. Location is obviously for tourists but the food did not disappoint. We decided to go for the premium priced Kobe beef instead of wagyu. Beef was cooked with care and sliced thinly. So it literally melts in your mouth. Glad that they serve some lettuce with all the meat & carbs. The only shortcoming for this place is it is a little cramped. But that’s the charm and novelty of it. They even had a toilet at the back. Amazing these holes in the wall restaurants!!

It's not bad and seems legit, but I expected charcoal cooking not in a pan. It was good for pan cooked. The meat is very fatty and has decent flavor although prefer the flavor of some other beefs more. One reason I prefer charcoal heat is that is can render the fat a bit.

After a long, hot tour of Himeji Castle, stumbling upon Kushiyaki Kobe Beef, located just across from the castle entrance, was the perfect treat. The moment I stepped up to the counter, I was greeted with warm, friendly service (excellent English) and small a cool, comfortable seating area offered the perfect break from the heat (there are only 6 seats). What truly stole the show was the perfectly prepared selection of Wagyu and Kobe beef — every bite was tender, flavorful, and cooked to absolute perfection. The quality of the meat was outstanding, and the care that went into preparing each cut was evident. Even better, the prices were a fraction of what you’d expect to pay for this quality in the United States, making it not only a culinary treat but also a great value. Everything was immaculately presented, and the experience felt both authentic and refined. Whether you’re a beef connoisseur or just hungry after sightseeing, Kushiyaki Kobe Beef is a must-visit in Himeji — a true hidden gem with exceptional food and heartfelt hospitality.

(Translated by Google) Otokoyama Hachimangu Shrine is a shrine located on the hillside of Mount Otoko, northwest of Himeji Castle. Its history is long, dating back to 1345, when Akamatsu Sadanori, the builder of Himeji Castle, enshrined a branch of the spirit from Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto and founded it as the castle's guardian shrine. The shrine has been deeply revered by successive lords of Himeji Castle, and there are records of renovations to the shrine buildings by Matsudaira Naonori in 1679 and Sakakibara Masakuni in 1716. Sakakibara Masakuni, in particular, is said to have dedicated gold-leaf sacred mirrors, stone lanterns, and votive plaques, making the shrine particularly magnificent. The shrine has remained affectionately known as "Otokoyama Yakujin-san" by locals since the Meiji period, and the current shrine building was rebuilt in 1990. The steep stone staircase leading from the south side of Mt. Otokoyama features 198 steps (some sources say 197). Many people use it for health training, and reaching the top leaves a sense of accomplishment. From the top of the steps, you can see Himeji Castle's main tower directly to the side. Especially during the first sunrise of the year, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the sun rising from near the tower. Additionally, from Otokoyama Water Distribution Tank Park at the summit of Mt. Otokoyama, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Himeji Castle and the city of Himeji. The temple grounds are home to historical cultural assets, including a stone torii gate said to have been donated by Sakakibara Masakuni. Yakujin Festival (February 18th-19th) Affectionately known as "Otokoyama Yakujin-san," this grand festival attracts many worshippers seeking protection from misfortune, and prayers are held throughout the night. Hamamoto Coffee is a charming retro cafe located in Himeji City, offering a variety of coffee options from around the world as well as their signature house blend. The cafe's vintage decor creates a nostalgic ambiance, making visitors feel like they've stepped back in time. Established in 1975, this Japanese-style coffee shop has been serving siphon-brewed coffee to both locals and tourists.
A cool cafe to get an aromatic coffee and delicious breakfast before heading on a long walk through Himeji Castle. We ordered the seasonal coffee, cafe latte and some toast half with almond and half with cinammon and a croque monsieur. Would recommend all the items we tried, the toast is so soft and fluufy, goes well with the coffee. Sitting at the bar allows you to watch the coffee being made, which was fun while waiting for the food.

Very popular cafe im Himeji. I went back to Hamamoto multiple times. The coffee is delicious, they use in-house roasted coffee beans. You can buy the beans separately. They have a nice morning special where you buy a coffee and get half a toast and a boiled egg. Great way to start the day! It is quite popular so expect a lineup.

Retro vibes with lovely polished dark wood counters. Coffee scent all around. This cafes holds a tinge of romance and practicality as you sit along the counter watching the coffee getting brewed. I loved their fluffy breakfast bread. My husband enjoyed their coffee. Friendly staff who are also English speaking.

Best coffee shop I've been to in Japan. Good quality coffee, including a selection from all over the world, prepared with loving care. Excellent service, and while friendly to non-Japanese speakers, it felt authentic rather than geared towards visitors, which I really enjoyed. Opens earlier that most Japanese coffee shops, and offers a light courtesy breakfast (boiled egg & toast) with the purchase of a drink before 11am. Also a good spot for anyone wishing to buy traditional coffee-making equipment or small coffee-related gifts.

(Translated by Google) It was built in 1623 (Genwa 9) during the early Edo period by Princess Sen (daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada, granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu). After losing her husband, Toyotomi Hideyori, in the Summer Siege of Osaka, Princess Sen remarried to Honda Tadatoki and lived in Himeji Castle. It is said that she built the shrine to pray for the prosperity of the Honda family and to enshrine the Tenjin (Sugawara no Michizane) whom she worshiped. The shrine was constructed facing east toward Himeji Castle so that Princess Sen, who lived in the Nishinomaru bailey of Himeji Castle, could offer distant worship in the mornings and evenings. Because Princess Sen prayed for happiness with her husband, Tadatoki, the shrine is said to grant blessings for successful love and marital harmony. Additionally, because the enshrined deity is Sugawara no Michizane, it is also said to grant blessings for academic success. It is said that the 10 years that Princess Sen spent in Himeji were the happiest of her life, and in keeping with this, many people come to pray for success in love. Located halfway up Mount Otoko, it also offers a great view of Himeji Castle. The current shrine building was newly constructed in 2002 (Heisei 14) and is characterized by its elegant karahafu style architecture. Enshrined within the grounds is a statue of a cow, which is said to be a messenger of Tenjin-sama, and it is said that stroking it will bring good fortune. The oden served here is very normal, but it has the ginger soy sauce which is the soul of Himeji oden. It's not that bad but I feel you can find the same at convenience store. Not sure if other highly rated oden places are the same?

(Translated by Google) This is an oden restaurant located in the food court inside Himeji Station. I had the 1500 yen “Nobunaga Set”. It is said that Himeji Oden is characterized by being dipped in ginger and soy sauce. I don't really like the ginger scent, but the ginger scent isn't that strong, so I don't think I'll like it that much. Odeng is not as salty as you might think, but if you dip it in soy sauce appropriately, it tastes good. Instead, I think it might be a little saltier if you don't serve rice and dip it in soy sauce. I recommend ordering it with rice. The rice is not plain rice, but seasoned rice.

Tea house
Soju-an tea house is nestled within 9 different gardens, each designed using the remains of walls and passageways from the 16th century. The traditional mud walls and roof tiles add to its historical charm. Visitors can partake in a serene tea ceremony, often without the hustle of other tourists, allowing for an intimate experience reminiscent of enjoying tea with family.
Soju-an tea house offers a great respite from minutes-to-hours of walking within Kokoen. They offer green tea with Japanese sweets served the traditional way by hosts in kimono or formal wear. A tip I can provide is please ensure reading the packet/brochure available so you can follow the steps on tea ceremony. The green tea with subtle bitterness is calming and is complemented by a sweet wagashi. My first time was spring 2023 and it is shaped as a sakura flower. This year, its color resembles autumn hues. Overall, the place is calming with a view of the zen garden. Truly a wonderful experience!
Paul B — Google review
A great place to rest after a stroll in the garden, located near the end, it is the perfect stop before exploring the last of the garden or leaving. This place is the embodiment of peace and quiet, after arriving and for 700 yen per person, you are to take off your shoes and enter the peaceful tea house. Step into a traditional tea house with an amazing atmosphere until you reach a tatami where you are invited to seat. While you will not experience a full tea ceremony, you will at least experience the tea and sweets serving, for the real experience here is to partake in a moment of tranquility when you can rest, enjoy tea and relax in peace and quiet. It was a formidable experience, the tea went really well with the sweet served and the glassdoors offered a nice view of the interior garden of the tea house. As I already said many times, a nice tea house offering peace and quiet, a nice respite after a day of visiting Himeji Castle and the garden.

We run into it without knowing in advance. It was about to open, so we waited outside and we were the first ones to enter; we were even alone for 5 minutes. We were served the matcha tea 🍵 with the traditional Japanese sweet 🍥 by the ladies in kimonos 👘 The place got really full within 10 minutes, there were even people queuing outside. So, going right upon opening is ideal! Such a worthwhile experience!
I Z — Google review
Beautiful tea house in the middle of kokoen garden. They serve last call at 3:40 pm. There are brochures in english and japanese on how to enjoy the tea which is served by tea masters in elegant kimonos. There is no ceremony but you can talk with the tea masters.
Maddy C — Google review
The place has great view over zen garden. It has air-conditioner so it is cool and chill. A must try when visiting Kokoen.
Bang T — Google review
I understood that there won't be a tea ceremony, but then I suggest letting people use the teatime the way they want it because i went in imagining having a tea while looking towards nature, maybe reading/relaxing a bit and ended up being sat down in a circle with strangers, having to do small talk, with my back to the garden. Not something I would have paid for. I will say that the leading lady, who was our guide through the small talk had a very pleasant vibe and she was clearly good at her role.
Csibpip — Google review

Himeji Park is a sprawling urban oasis that seamlessly integrates with the rich historical and cultural legacy of Himeji Castle. Recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Historical Parks, it offers an array of educational and cultural attractions such as a zoo, Kokoen Garden, art museum, historical museum, and the Japan Castle Research Center. The park's centerpiece, Himeji Castle, holds the distinction of being Japan's first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and is revered for its architectural prowess.
Himeji Park is a lovely place to visit, especially with the stunning Himeji Castle as its centerpiece. The palace is beautiful and absolutely worth seeing. The park itself is peaceful and well-kept, making it a great spot to relax and take in the scenery. Roaming through the park offers nice views of the castle from different angles, and it’s a perfect way to enjoy nature and history at the same time. Definitely worth the visit.

Diners can indulge in traditional favorites like "Nasi Campur" and the renowned "Beef Rendang," celebrated as one of the world's most delectable dishes.
This indonesian restaurant was very good in terms of food and services. We discovered several specialties which were very tasty. The dessert part was the best with there bowl of splendid fruits. If this restaurant was located near the station of Himeji it would be full of client, but at that actual place we were the only 2 clients for 5 employees (maybe a bit too much). I really hope they will find a lot of clients because the chief deserves it ! Tips : since the food is housemade, you can easily ask to remoove an ingredient (we done it for spice).

A clean and comfortable Indonesian/Balinese restaurant with very friendly staff. The chef, Bawel, is such a good chef he was asked to move from Bali to Japan to cook at this restaurant. The waitress (sorry I didn't ask your name), catered to us frequently and Bawel explained each of the dishes. They serve course meals as well as a la carte, both with many options. The price for the courses are great value but the a la carte can be a bit more expensive. With that said, the a la carte main and dessert I ordered were delicious. I will visit this restaurant again when I'm back in Himeji. If you want an authentic taste of Indonesian/Balinese food, I recommend this restaurant.

They do not compromise on the quality of their ingredients, many of which are imported from Bali. I especially enjoyed their dessert plate. People are very friendly.

(Translated by Google) This was my first visit as I love Asian food. The food was very delicious. The best Asian food I've ever had. I don't know if it's a spice, but it has an elegant and exquisite taste. The presentation was also very beautiful. The atmosphere of the shop is nice and elegant, but it feels easy to enter. Both the chef and the staff, who are from Balinese, were very friendly. If you come to Himeji again, I would like to visit you. I have a friend in Himeji, so I'll tell him about it. We were just doing a campaign to commemorate our 1st anniversary.

(Translated by Google) This restaurant serves authentic, rich Asian cuisine unlike any other in Himeji. I'm glad they're open all day. They offer everything from lunch to afternoon tea and dinner. They also offer course meals. They have a wide selection of drinks and desserts. While they have standard dishes, most of the dishes are well-seasoned Asian, with relatively few familiar sweet and sour or coconut flavors. The green curry soup is salty and not the typical coconut milk flavor. The mie goreng was also not my usual taste. I was surprised by how delicious the nasi goreng was. The desserts are unique, but all are delicious. However, if you're looking for a familiar flavor, it may not be what you're expecting. I really like this place because it serves authentic, sophisticated Asian cuisine.

(Translated by Google) Authentic Indonesian cuisine. The beautiful presentation reminded me of something you'd find in a hotel rather than a typical restaurant. Lunch is a little on the pricey side, at 2,500-3,000 yen, but the seasonings were unlike anything you'd find in Japan: coconut, Asian spices, and dressing. The service and atmosphere were great, so even if it was a little pricey, I'd recommend it if you're looking for an elegant experience. I returned in 2025 and ordered the beef rendang. It was a beef stew with a hint of coconut. It was delicious. The portion was a little small for a man.

(Translated by Google) I went here for lunch before work. When it comes to Indonesian food, nasi campur is the only option. I asked for a little less rice and it was just the right amount! But it wasn't spicy at all...could it have been a little more local?? I was a bit disappointed... Is it difficult to adjust the spiciness? But I even had a refill on my drink and finished it all. It was a great way to experience the tropics for a little while. Kuramae is a well-established restaurant run by a sumo family, offering traditional chanko-nabe made from fresh seasonal ingredients. The secret recipe has been preserved for years, allowing visitors to savor the authentic flavors of this hot pot dish. In addition to the exceptional chanko-nabe, the restaurant also offers a variety of other delicious dishes such as sashimi and a la carte options at reasonable prices.

Park
Keifukuji Park is located to the west of Himeji Castle and offers a stunning view dominated by the main donjon and inui-kotenshu, the largest of the three secondary keeps. This historical site was once used for setting up cannons during a significant event in the mid-nineteenth century.
(Translated by Google) It is said to be one of the top 10 sights of Himeji Castle, a world heritage site. Access: 15 minutes walk 900m from Himeji Castle (Sakuramon Bridge), or a short bus ride from Ichinohashi Literature Museum. There is a toilet. There is a play area on the map, and there is a notation that there is play equipment, but in reality it has been removed. Please be careful as it is overgrown with grass and not well maintained. AVOID THIS VIEWPOINT! 6 months on from the last review, the park has not been cleaned up or maintained by the government. The place is full of grasses and trees block the view. Don’t waste your time hiking up to this viewpoint, there’s a better spot just north of this.

(Translated by Google) Although it is not maintained at all and the grass is unkempt, it gives it a unique atmosphere and is a nice touch. Himeji Castle can be seen from the observation plaza, and as you step into the mountain path, the refreshing scent of the forest overflows, making it easy to enjoy the forest atmosphere throughout the town. However, be careful as there are a lot of mosquitoes at this time of the year.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time (January 5th). It was a strange park that was quite deserted, but on the other hand it created a nice atmosphere. If you look closely, it looks like it has been maintained and there is no damage to the equipment. Since it is located on top of a mountain, I get the impression that a lot of effort has been put into maintaining it. A good hidden spot to see Himeji Castle. By the way, the only way to visit this place is from the side of the parking lot of the glasses shop on Shosha Kaido. Please note that there is a cemetery on the south side and a residential area on the west side, so they are not connected.

(Translated by Google) I visited in mid-July, and the grass was so thick that it looked like an abandoned land. Moreover, there are a lot of mosquitoes.
