Bridge
The Old Main Bridge, also known as Alte Mainbrucke in German, is a historic stone bridge in Wurzburg that dates back to the 16th century. Adorned with statues of saints and historical figures, it serves as a cultural and social hub for both locals and tourists. The bridge offers stunning views of the Marienberg Fortress and the Main River, making it a popular spot for people to gather, especially in the evenings.
Old Main Bridge – Simple, Peaceful, Timeless I didn’t cross the bridge, just saw it from the riverbank — and honestly, that was enough. The red stone arches, the quiet flow of the Main, and the reflections in the water made for such a peaceful moment. It’s not flashy, but it has this calm, old-world charm. Perfect spot for a slow walk, a photo, or just to sit and breathe for a bit.
Keerthy N — Google review
Excellent place to stand and people watch. The were having a fair so the town was overflowing with beautiful people. The promenade along the canal is perfect for a lovely stroll and a glass.
Raymond J — Google review
Great place for a pedestrian bridge. Watch the locks and dams move boats up and down the river and people from shore to shore. The statues and hanging baskets are a nice touch. The benches are an invitation to enjoy the views in all directions. This is a very historic structure. The bars and rearraunts at both ends are good also.
Dan H — Google review
No tickets required for this in Wurzberg. Just be prepared to get the step count up, when you walk around add there is so many interesting places to visit.
Stuart L — Google review
This bridge is very popular for sipping wine with the Main river and Bineyard view. Even though it is nout that much architecturally decorated comapred to other bridge in Germany, the view is surreal.
N K — Google review
Würzburg is such a charming city, and this bridge is truly the heart of that charm. Grabbing a glass (or two) of wine and watching the sunset here is an experience you shouldn’t miss. The atmosphere is amazing — people chatting, laughing, enjoying the moment together. It’s lively but relaxed, full of warmth and good energy. Absolutely beautiful and priceless experience! Pro tip: buy some olives from a nearby store and take that hedonism to the max...
Luka G — Google review
This is the main attraction of Würzburg. In the evenings, many locals and tourists gather. Everyone tastes the famous local wine. Beautiful views of the city, the fortress and the river. You don't want to leave this bridge!

Perched on a hillside overlooking the Main River, Marienberg Fortress is a reconstructed 13th-century stronghold that houses art and history museums. The fortress has a rich history dating back to a Celtic fortification in the 1st century BC and offers insights into the region's past through extensive collections of artifacts at the Main Franconian Museum. Visitors can also explore formal terrace gardens while enjoying stunning views of Wurzburg from this strategic vantage point.
Little bit of a hike up the hill, so wear good shoes. Beautiful views from the top! Right now the fortress is under going renovations so the only way to get into the fortress right now is to take the guided tour. Only 4 euros, so worth it.
Philip S — Google review
The path to fortress is incredible and the view from top along with Main river view reminded me of Prague and the bridge resembling some what to Charles bridge. The red roofs and architecturally decorated view was splendid. I would definitely go again.
N K — Google review
Nice castle on the hill. Amazing panoramic views to Wurcburg city. Nice calm walking trays. There is a bus no.9 going down the hill.
JOvi E — Google review
One of the best strolls in the area : crossing the bridge and leisurely walking up to the fortress in the midst of vineyards. Strongly recommended the castle tour and enjoying the view from the top gardens.
Tony B — Google review
Worth a visit, even while renovations are underway. At the moment the main part of the fortress isn't accessible, but the museum is still well worth the ttrip. If using public transportation, take the #9 line to get as close to the main entrance as possible.
Nathan V — Google review
The Marienberg Fortress offers a fantastic view over Würzburg and looks beautiful from the outside. Unfortunately, there is currently a lot of construction work going on, so a large part of the area couldn’t be visited. We only stayed outside and didn’t go inside, so I can’t comment on the interior. The parking fees were quite high, so I would recommend walking up from the old town instead — it’s a nice way to enjoy the scenery!
Cara J — Google review
The fortress was unfortunately under reconstruction. We were able to see only the main courtyard and walk along the fortress walls and around the fortress. Very beautiful views of Würzburg!
Valeriy V — Google review
It's a shame that the interior is closed. The view is spectacular and the tourist bus comes up there regularly. The museum is worth a visit with lots of Riemenschneider carvings.

The Würzburg Residence is a must-see attraction in the city, known for its opulent 18th-century palace and formal gardens. This UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases magnificent Baroque architecture and lush surroundings. The palace, built between 1719 and 1744 under the patronage of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, boasts intricate stuccoes, lavish furnishings, and an impressive fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
This is a beautiful place to visit. The opulence is almost overwhelming. It was a little warm inside but not unbearable. The gardens are INCREDIBLE. Highly recommend, very walkable.
Samantha T — Google review
Gorgeous rococo. Twice a day English tours but the tour is not really necessary. The small von Wagner museum is worth a quick stop (it's free) and the church is small but pretty. There is a tourist town bus that stops outside the Residence during summer months. There are no online tickets sales or time slots.
Kate J — Google review
The decorations were wonderful, and the optical illusions on the ceiling were so impressive that I could have mistaken them for real sculptors. I took a guided tour in English, and they explained every detail, which was very educational. Towards the end of the tour, there were photos of the building that were devastated during World War II, and I was impressed by how well it had been restored.
Taka N — Google review
The Würzburg Residence is an absolute marvel—both architecturally and atmospherically. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stuns with its grandeur even before you step inside. The perfectly symmetrical façade, elegant domes, and sweeping gardens immediately signal that you’ve arrived somewhere truly special. Inside, the lavish interiors are almost overwhelming in their beauty. The Baroque and Rococo details, particularly in the chapel and ceremonial rooms, are full of intricate marble, gold leaf, and awe-inspiring ceiling frescoes. You could stand there for hours just admiring the craftsmanship. But what truly sets this place apart is the Residence Garden. It’s a quiet sanctuary right in the heart of the city. The sculpted hedges, fountains, and graceful statues are all arranged with such harmony that walking through the paths feels like stepping into a painting. Whether you’re sitting in the shade of an old tree or admiring the palace from behind a leafy arch, there’s a calming elegance to every corner. This is not just a site for history or art lovers—it’s a peaceful escape where you can slow down, breathe, and enjoy beauty at your own pace.
Ishantha H — Google review
We spent some time in the gardens of the Residenz which you can do at no cost. The place is neatly maintained and you can get stunning views of the huge baroque palace. There's also parking on the other side of the building as well as a free public toilet nearby.

The Würzburg Residence was stunning! Amazing architecture, gorgeous frescoes, and peaceful gardens. Totally worth a visit—history and beauty in one spot. Highly recommended!
Konrad K — Google review
This is a unesco world heritage site. Very well maintained especially given that it was damaged during the second world war. The key highlights are the glass room, ceiling art and the gardens. The total visit time would be 2-3 hrs. Do spend time in the gardens. The rooms can feel repetitive after a while with the same greek themed tapestries
Piyush T — Google review
From the inside to out in the Garden, this is well worth the money for the visit. They have a lift, so I was able to bring my 92yo father in to view this incredible display of art meets architecture. Absolutely amazing.

Wurzburg Cathedral is a Romanesque Catholic cathedral known for its baroque stucco interior. Despite sustaining heavy damage in World War II, it still boasts mesmerizing art and architecture by renowned artists such as Tilman Riemenschneider and Balthasar Neumann. The cathedral, which began construction in the 11th century, is noted for its extraordinary length and serves as the burial place of the Prince-Bishops.
A beautiful romanesque/baroque cathedral of St. Kilian. The pipe organ is magnificent. Listen to a concert if one is available.

Some beautiful architecture at this free to enter cathedral after the over the top decor of the residence this was almost cathartic in its difference. The building was heavily damaged in the war but rebuilt superbly afterwards. Def worth a look

Everything in Wurzburg was badly damaged and burned after the allied bombings of 16 March 1945. This church was no exception and you can see this in the sober rebuilt interior with details incorporated from the old church
Seimen B — Google review
Würzburg Cathedral (Dom St. Kilian) is an important church situated at the end of Domstraße that we very much enjoyed visiting during a recent stay in the city. The church is conveniently located near other interesting attractions and is well worth making time to visit while sightseeing in Würzburg Historically, it seems there have been church buildings upon these grounds since at least the mid 8th-century. However, the building you see today has gone through numerous rebuilds starting with the 11th century Romanesque church, Gothic additions and Baroque makeovers in later centuries. Heavily damaged during WWII air raids, St. Kilian was redesigned and rebuilt between the 1960s to early 2000s, providing the present church building that you see today. The Romanesque Revival style facade and its two front towers dominate the skyline as you approach along Domstraße. As you enter you find a nearly 100 metre long centre nave and two side aisles with an interesting mix of traditional, historic and contemporary sculptures, altars, ceiling frescos and stained glass windows. There are important tombs and epitaphs, a nice cloister and interesting things to view with the church. Allow 15-20 minutes minimum to walk through and see everything.
Brad — Google review
St. Kilian's cathedral is a must-see site to visit if you're touring the beautiful Bavarian city of Würzburg. The Romanesque architecture is magnificent, and the Baroque decoration of the ceiling of the nave is breathtaking.

Nestled within the south wing of the magnificent Wurzburg Residence, the Martin von Wagner Museum is a treasure trove for art and archaeology enthusiasts. Established in 1832, this museum boasts an impressive collection that reflects its rich history. Named after Johann Martin von Wagner, who generously donated his own artifacts in 1858, it showcases around 5,000 Ancient Greek vases—one of the largest collections in Germany.
One of the largest university museums with a really nice selection of ancient art (great collection of Greek vases and early Romian sculptures), medieval altar sculptures and ealry modern paintings.
Bartosz A — Google review
Most of the museum was closed for renovations. We were able to see the Greek pottery and some Egyptian artifacts. The holdings are surprisingly good for what was once a private collection. Based on what we were able to see, I can say that if you've been through major museums such as the Louvre, the Vatican, the British museum, you can skip this because it is a small museum. But if you've never seen antiquities in person, you will marvel. There's no substitute for seeing in person. The best part is that the museum is free and the entrance is right there in the Residence complex- just a few steps away. The archeological museum is open in the morning and the paintings museum is open after lunch.
Kate J — Google review
Very helpful and friendly staff. The antiquities collection is the better of the two collections in terms of quality. While the paintings and renaissance sculpture are good there are few masterpieces. The main exception being the Tilman Riemenschneider works. There's a staggered opening so the paintings are open to lunch time and the antiquities after.
Ger S — Google review
Shame on all the museums with artifacts from other places. They don't belong in Germany... Return the Parthenon sculpture to Athens, where it belongs!

Place of local pilgrimage, quite high up opposite the old city. Nice views. But mainly a place for Marian devotion. Worth visiting if you like churches, places where piety is taken seriously, and perhaps want a short but steep walk up (and down!)
Bill L — Google review
The architecture is amazing inside out. So many details in decoration. The church is on a hill and you need to go through stairs with the way of sorrows along the stairs. The view of the city from there is amazing.
Carla S — Google review
Never seen architecture to take you up the hill to a church like that. A set of stair cases, statues and stories guide you up the hill. Make sure you are steady on your feet if you decide to take the stairs, there are many of them! Once on top a golden interior can be admired.
Ines S — Google review
Beautiful little baroque church with a fantastic view of the city. The interior is exquisitely decorated, it could just use a very thorough cleaning to restore it to the gold and white splendour it must have had in earlier times. But even now a sight well worth the walk up the hill.
Elyan F — Google review
One of the most beautiful church I have visited across Germany. A pilgrimage site dating 17th century located on the parallel hillside of Marienberg fortress. Can be reached through a walk from Löwenbrücke. It can be tiring to walk all those steep stairs but the panoramic view of Würzburg that it provides is worth all the efforts. On the way up you cross 14 stations depicting the story of the cross carried by Jesus with beautifully carved sculptures. The forest behind the church is worth taking a walk. Autumn time is specially recommended as it becomes exceptionally beautiful.

Falkenhaus, also known as the House of the Falcon, is a historic building in Wurzburg with a stunning Rococo-style façade. Originally the house of a cathedral priest, it was later repurposed as an inn and concert hall before being rebuilt after suffering damage during World War II. The building now houses the city library and a ticket counter. Visitors can admire its intricate gabled facade and learn about its rich history while exploring Wurzburg's old town.
It’s one of the famous buildings of the city. Join a city tour and learn about its interesting history. House the Info center and a museum.

This is a beautiful building at Marktplatz just next to Marienkapelle constructed in 1751. You'll see a charming facade that is considered one of the finest examples of Rococo in Southern Germany. Acquired by the city of Würzburg in 1939, today this is where you also find the Tourist Office on the G/F. Here you can find brochures and information about sightseeing around city and nearby wine country. There is also a fair amount of merchandise / souvenirs for those interested in purchasing something as a reminder of their visits to Würzburg.
Brad — Google review
The 18th-century Falkenhaus in Würzburg is one of this old Bavarian city's chief historic treasures. Its ornate Rococo façade, featuring three stylized gables, is very beautiful. The building, which now houses the city's tourist information center and a library, was completely rebuilt to its original 18th-century specifications after it was destroyed by bombing in World War II. The Falkenhaus is close to another must-see historic site in Würzburg, the Marienkapelle, making it easy to visit both in the same tour of the city.

Franconian Wine Country Tourism GmbH is the go-to place for discovering Germany's top wine-growing region. The area's wines, cultivated on the slopes above the winding River Main, are renowned for their full-bodied and often drier characteristics. This distinctiveness is attributed to the less forgiving climate compared to other German wine regions. Winters are cold with high rainfall and early frosts, while summers are warm and dry.

Very beautiful and wonderful church to visit in Würzburg. I’m very delighted that these unique architectural landmarks are being preserved as a masterpiece of old times architecture and still have their own unique heritage as well as the identity. A remarkable attraction in Würzburg.

Neumünster is an important historical church located along Martinstraße in the city centre that we enjoyed visiting while in staying in the city last month. Historically, it is believed that the church grounds to be the location where the Frankish apostles named Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan were killed in 689. A monastery was originally situated at this location. It was replaced by a Romanesque church around 1060. In the 18th century, the church was then given the Baroque appearance which you see today. What you will see is an ornate church facade with multiple curved tiers, niches filled with statues along with other ornamentation. The interior includes stucco ornamentation of an otherwise white wall appearance. There are sculptures, elegant ceiling and inner dome frescos, colourful contemporary artworks lining the central nave walls with traditional works found in the side aisles. The apse and main altar are quite decorative, typical of Baroque churches. Alas, in the Kilian Crypt there is a Shrine with bones of the three Frankish apostles mentioned earlier. At the east side of the church there is a small cloister garden called Lusamgartlein that is worth a quick look around as well.

Schloss Veitshöchheim is a splendid 17th-century royal summer palace that served as the summer residence for the Prince-Bishops of Wurzburg and later the Kings of Bavaria. The palace boasts elegant rooms adorned with stuccowork by Antonio Bossi and sculptures by Johann Peter Wagner. Visitors can explore the sumptuous private apartments once used by the Duke of Tuscany on guided tours from April to October.
Huge Rococo gardens associated with the summer palace of the Wurzburg bishop. This palace was built ca. 1680 and used by the bishops until 1802. Our walkabout through the gardens was a highlight of the trip. There are benches scattered around the park and a number of nice places to have a picnic.

A late Baroque style residence palace built for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. It is surrounded with the impressive rococo gardens designed with majestic hedge-lined path, pavilions and flower beds. The tall hedges along with the decorations are the specialty. Spring till late summer is the best time to visit, since you can admire all the greenery and the beauty this courtyard garden has to offer. There is a big pond filled with different fishes, which are relaxing to watch. It is easy to reach with the public transport from Würzburg city, there is a direct bus connection. St. Mary's Chapel is a stunning 14th-century Gothic church located in Wurzburg, Germany. The chapel features a tall steeple and is adorned with historic sculptures and art, making it a visual masterpiece. Situated near the Fortress Marienberg, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the city and other notable landmarks from this vantage point. The surrounding area offers cobblestone streets that lead to hidden gems like St.
If you go to the beautiful historic Bavarian city of Würzburg, a visit to the Marienkapelle (St. Mary's chapel) really should be on your to-do list. The Gothic architecture is impressive, and the chapel houses important works of art from the medieval period, including sculptures by 15th and 16th century sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, some of which are copies, because the original sculptures have been moved to museums. Next to Marienkapelle is the Marienplatz, where you can find multiple restaurants with outdoor seating offering dishes typical of the Franconian region of Bavaria, as well as other locally made items.

Marian Chapel is a charming Late Gothic style building at Marktplatz in the city centre of Würzburg. It was constructed between 1377 and 1480, creating delightful ambience and appeal to an already attractive Market Square. It is well worth a few minutes viewing of the exterior and a quick walk through the church while sightseeing in the area. The main exterior is red and cream colour and features a nice portal niche entrance and single tall red tower. The interior is very much a Gothic configuration as well with a narrow tall nave with ceiling vaults, attractive stained glass windows, sculptures, tombs and altar paintings.

Maria Chapel, or Marienkapelle, in Würzburg, Germany, is a hidden gem steeped in history and architectural beauty. Nestled amidst the charming streets of Würzburg's Old Town, this medieval chapel captivates visitors with its Gothic elegance and tranquil ambiance. The exterior showcases intricate stone carvings and a stunning spire, drawing attention from passersby. Upon entering Marienkapelle, the atmosphere shifts to one of serenity and spiritual reflection. The interior boasts exquisite stained glass windows that filter ethereal light, creating a mesmerizing play of colors. The intricate details of the altars and religious artifacts add to the chapel's overall sense of historical significance. What sets Marienkapelle apart is its ability to evoke a sense of timelessness. Whether you appreciate medieval architecture, religious art, or seek a moment of quiet contemplation, this chapel offers a sanctuary from the bustling outside world. Visitors often find themselves enchanted by the delicate balance of grandeur and intimacy within its walls. Marienkapelle stands as not just a religious site but a living testament to the cultural richness of Würzburg. Its modest size belies the depth of its impact, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring the city's historical treasures.
S P — Google review
It was built in the Gothic style in the 14th century. Despite its large size, it is a chapel by status as it does not have a parish. It was heavily damaged by the bombing in World War II, and its interior was destroyed by flames. It was rebuilt in the 1950s and re-consecrated in 1962. The original construction started in 1377, but it's not certain at what point in time the chapel was finished. The choir was reportedly consecrated in 1392. Burials at the site took place as early as 1411/2. By 1441 it must have been largely completed as Bishop Sigismund von Sachsen driven from the cathedral, used it as his church. That same year construction started on the tower, and the tower roof was added in 1479. Its two best known works of art, the sculptures of Adam and Eve by Tilman Riemenschneider, are today located in the Mainfränkisches Museum and have been replaced by copies (on South Portal). It's worth your time and effort to visit this church while you're visiting Würzburg.

Visitors can reflect on models depicting the bomb damage and view a list of names of those who lost their lives during this tragic event.
I was here as a wedding photographer. 📸 We had a civil ceremony inside the historical hall. It was really something very special. I honestly think it’s one of top cherry place which you can select for your wedding day, especially for a civil ceremony. It easily fit around 50 people. It also have several tables in the background as well as plenty of chairs to sit. It’s better to come 15 minutes in advance to pass all the documents. Make sure your guests are all in time for the ceremony. I would say it took as an hour in total for the whole process to be out again. Ceremony itself were very friendly, my couple and their guests laughed a lot. What else do you need on your wedding day, right? Some joy together with your close people ☺️

Würzburg's old Rathaus or city hall is one of the city's oldest buildings. The oldest part of the building dates from the 13th century. As with many of Würzburg's historic landmarks, the old Rathaus combines features of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The Röntgen X-Ray Exhibit is a memorial site dedicated to Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the physicist who discovered X-radiation and was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics. The exhibit showcases original documents and devices related to his work, including his actual laboratory equipment.
Actually this place should be called ‘ Mini Museum of The “Dr. X-Ray”’. I’m sure that not so many people know about the discovery and the connection between X-Ray and Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. Even I was really surprised to know that his discovery of X-Ray was in Würzburg! 😲 I was also really surprised to find out that the entrance is free of charge! Visiting the “Röntgen Gedächtnisstätte” in Würzburg is an enlightening experience. This memorial site is dedicated to Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the brilliant physicist who discovered X-rays. The museum is thoughtfully curated, providing detailed insights into Röntgen's life, his groundbreaking discovery, and its immense impact on science and medicine. The exhibits include fascinating artifacts and well-presented information that make the visit both educational and inspiring. The exhibitions are very educational and informative. Even though I wasn’t particularly interested in history, I was very glad to come to learn about the life of Professor Röntgen and to pay my homage. Personally I think this place has to be on one of the must-visit list in Würzburg. If you have an interest in the history of science, this is a must-see in Würzburg!

As a radiologist (and therefore a nerd) I thought it was so cool. This is on the university campus. We went when school was likely not in session, and in the evening. You legitimately just walk up this nondescript staircase (although there are small flags and a placard) and let yourself in. We didn't see anyone else while we were there. There are a couple cool short informational videos and a small exhibit. And - you can see his actual lab equipment. Nerd heaven. It's not large, you likely won't need more than 30 minutes.

This University of Würzburg building has a nice memorial to physicist Wilhelm Röntgen who discovered x-rays and their practical use. The museum-like memorial is in a long hallway with a vestibule and a lobby at the ends. In addition there are two rooms, one locked containing his original laboratory and the other open with a display of period scientific instruments. The hallway has quite a bit of biographical information presented in a timeline format. The display includes the Nobel Prize certificate awarded to Röntgen.

The Four Tubes Fountain, an 18th-century baroque fountain in Wurzburg, is a significant landmark featuring an obelisk adorned with sculptures and a coat of arms. Located near the Old Bridge, it holds historical significance as the Grafeneckart, the oldest part of Wurzburg City Hall. The square surrounding the fountain serves as a popular meeting point and starting point for exploring nearby attractions such as Residenz Wurzburg and the city center's old streets.
The Four Tubes fountain in Wüzburg is easy to miss, but is so very worth seeing. It's a beautful 18th-century Baroque fountain next to the equally historic Grafeneckart, and features an obelisk and coat of arms with a statue of St. Kilian, the patron saint of Franconia, on top of the obelisk. I recommend combining a visit to the Grafeneckart houses with a visit to the fountain.

The Four-Pipe Fountain is situated just across from Grafeneckart in a heavy pedestrian traffic area. Very likely you will pass by this area in route to the Old Main Bridge and can have a look at the fountain on the way. Historically there was a water well at this location as early as the Middle Ages. The fountain monument you see today dates to the 18th century and is Baroque in architectural form. What you see is a obelisk with a bronze coat of arms and topped by the Patron Saint of Fraconia. At the base of the obelisk are female figures representing (wisdom, temperance, justice & strength), below which are for dolphins from which water spills from their mouths into a ground level basin. It is an ornate fountain that is well worth viewing for a couple of minutes when sightseeing in this area of Würzburg.

Visitors can explore the profound narratives surrounding local Jewish life, including historical atrocities faced over centuries. The museum showcases 1,504 recovered tombstones from the Middle Ages and employs modern technology to illustrate both contemporary and traditional Jewish lifestyles that have thrived for nearly 900 years in Wurzburg.

(Translated by Google) We (3 adults) were at the Jewish Museum here in Würzburg today (April 10th, 2025). It consists of two parts: the Orthodox synagogue and the museum. There are also rooms for seminars, training and administration. We had already been to various synagogues several times - so we already knew a bit about them. The museum and the synagogue are heavily secured from the outside (it is unacceptable that my Jewish fellow citizens have to protect themselves because they are threatened by criminal elements. Anyone who does something like that must be permanently removed from the Federal Republic) When we got inside we were greeted warmly. In front of us was a class (around 10th grade) who were taking a tour. We asked if we could join the class. That didn't work - but the friendly Mrs. R. gave a tour just for the three of us - super nice. Thanks again for that. Since it's about Jewish life and traditions, you have to get involved with it - that means: Even though we as Christians have inherited a lot from our Jewish brothers, their traditions are still completely foreign to us. There is and was a lot that I don't understand about it - that means there is still a lot to learn. Or to put it another way: You don't just scurry through the exhibition quickly and that's it. That's difficult stuff. The history of the progroms anyway - but everything else isn't trivial to understand either. In any case, we will remember the visit very positively. I would plan around 2 hours+. Parts of the basement were currently being renovated - but it still takes 2 hours.

Historical landmark
Grafeneckart is a historic part of Wurzburg's town hall, dating back to 1316. This oldest secular building in Wurzburg features a Romanesque tower with a sundial on its southern facade and a painted tree on the side wing known as Grunbaum. Additionally, Grafeneckart houses a scale model depicting the WWII bombing's impact on the city.
With its impressive Romanesque tower, Würzburg's old Rathaus or town hall, the Grafeneckart, is an historic anchor for the city's old town. The building in its present form dates from the 15th century. It was destroyed by fire in the bombing of Würzburg during World War II and rebuilt to historic specifications after the war.

This is the charming 55-metre tall tower that forms part of Rathaus across from the Vierröhren fountain. It is Romanesque in architectural style and makes for an interesting building to see while sightseeing in the area. In addition to have a bell that rings on the hour, you'll see a sundial and clock face on the tower facade along with a lovely green tree originally painted by Alexander Müller (1597) and restored in 1914 that is quite attractive. I really liked viewing Grafeneckart.

Historical building on the spot of Wurzburg.. Medieval story was made..
Sang A — Google review
(Translated by Google) Chic, eye-catching, medieval tower. He just looks romantic and good. It is probably the oldest part of the town hall. At the bottom of the building is the Ratskeller and a memorial room for the destruction in the Second World War. When you visit Würzburg you will pass this building complex at some point. The 55 meter high Romanesque tower can be seen from afar. As such, the building is not open for tours. About the story: The building was first mentioned as a medieval family tower in 1180 as curia Billungi. The first owners, Heinrich Billung and his son Count Eckhart de Foro, were both mayors of Würzburg, i.e. the highest judges appointed by the city's ruler, the bishop. Eckhard was also deputy to the burgrave, the city's most important episcopal representative. Because of his high reputation, he was also called “Count”. The “Grafeneckart” is named after him: the farm of “Count” Eckard. This building was not only a residential building, but also the official residence of the city mayor. The count was murdered in 1200 and the building changed hands a few times. On March 5, 1316 it was sold to the mayors Arnold vom Sandhof and Ecko von Steren for 370 pounds heller. In 1453 the council decided to build a tower over the southeast edge of the Grafeneckart, which finally took place between 1453 and 1456. The tower was equipped with a fire and storm bell and the clock was installed. In the following centuries, the building was continually expanded and elevated into a city castle. This was intended to protect the mayor and his council from attacks and robberies. The council meetings that had previously been held in the “Hof zur Sturmglocke” were moved to Grafeneckart. The complex was badly damaged in the Second World War and was rebuilt and reconstructed over the years until 2017.

(Translated by Google) The Old Town Hall of Würzburg, with its 13th-century Grafeneckart Tower, was originally a residence and watchtower. In the 15th century, it became the seat of the city council and a political symbol of the city. Severely damaged in 1945, it was rebuilt after the war. Today, it combines municipal and cultural functions and is one of Würzburg's most iconic landmarks. Its two clocks on the façade are particularly striking.
