The medieval bridge castle and fortification, now converted into a walking path, stands majestically overlooking the Seille River in Metz' Quartier Outre-Seille. The imposing edifice features two immense round towers and bastions, dating back to the 13th and 15th centuries.
I walk a long way to come to this beautiful castle. Was well worth it. Both night and day.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful!!! What a nice view from the top and from the bridge behind it. It is a must-go from Metz. (Little tip: there is a lift to go up in the tower, I was so happy when I saw it, it was possible to go up with a stroller)

Porte des Allemands is a beautiful medieval gate in Metz with towers, bridges, and great river views. It’s a peaceful place to walk, take photos, and enjoy the city’s rich history. Free and worth a visit!
Prabu S — Google review
Very cool little fortress! Definitely worth a visit if in Metz.

I visited on a rainy day on Wednesday afternoon at around 1500. It has descriptions explaining the historical significance of the landmark, and stiatcases that allowed you to enter and reach the first floor of the landmark. It also had a space for an exhibition, which was showcasing various building materials across time during my visit. Nevertheless, I wish there were more efforts in presenting the history of the landmark. Overall, it is worth visiting even if time is limited.
Ah J — Google review
It is a historic fortified city gate and bridge castle located in Metz, France. Constructed in stages from the 13th to the 15th century, it features two round towers from the 13th century and two gun bastions added in the 15th century. The gate served as both a defensive structure and a bridge over the Seille River, playing a crucial role in the city's medieval fortifications. It stands today as a significant monument historique, representing Metz's rich architectural heritage. Beautiful and impressive.
Vafa — Google review
A gorgeous spot to visit and take photos. Not busy at all on a Sunday
Priscilla H — Google review
One of the best spots to explore in Metz. Free to enter. Make sure to walk all the way around the gate to get the best views from along the river. The gate seems to showcase various exhibits of modern art over time. Highly recommend for those visiting Metz.

The Centre Pompidou-Metz, a modern arts center located in Metz, is a futuristic building with an undulating roof designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. It is a satellite branch of the Pompidou Centre in Paris and features ambitious temporary exhibitions from Europe's largest modern-art collection. The center hosts cultural events, talks, and youth projects, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts.
Centre Pompidou-Metz is a really cool spot in Metz with some unforgettable architecture—like the entrance that looks kinda like 😂, which made me chuckle. Inside, the art is just as interesting. My favorite was this elephant sculpture wrapped in white cloth—it was super striking. There wasn’t one main theme that grabbed me, but there was a good mix of contemporary art to check out. The staff were nice, and I liked that all the art info was in both English and French, which helps tourists a lot. I’d definitely recommend it to friends and family, especially if they’re into art. The unique building, varied exhibits, and friendly vibe make it worth a visit.
Krunal T — Google review
Definitely an amazing place! The architecture of the space is charming and makes the visit feel special. The artworks are interesting, modern, and very diverse. However, some of the pieces deal with sensitive topics in a very visual and direct way and I believe they should be labeled with a trigger warning. It’s not always suitable for sensitive audiences. Still, it’s a unique experience…
Sabina C — Google review
The art will make you angry (it’s a banana. Taped to the wall ffs.) but you know what? Good art should make you feel something, and there’s some very very good art here. Of course there is. The building itself is a breathtaking masterpiece as well, with well laid out and inventive gallery spaces, and all the amenities and accoutrements you’d expect from a world class institution. Excellent restaurant. Clean washrooms. And you didn’t hear it from me, but if you’re stuck for luggage storage waiting for your train, you can walk right in and store your bags for a euro. And you don’t even have to go into the museum ! Just go - it’s one of Metz’s main attractions.
Greg M — Google review
The architecture of the Centre Pompidou alone is worth the visit – bold, elegant, and full of light. I explored two unforgettable exhibitions: Maurizio Cattelan’s ironic, provocative works and Marina Abramović’s participative experience “Counting the Rise.” Although I didn’t have enough time to take part in the participatory tasks set up in Abramović’s exhibition space, I still found the concept inspiring and thought-provoking. The atmosphere invites deep reflection and engagement with the human experience. In addition, on the second floor, visitors can discover works by over 40 international contemporary artists – a diverse and fascinating collection that adds even more depth and colour to the visit. You should definitely plan to spend a few hours or more to fully appreciate everything. An inspiring blend of architecture, performance, and contemporary art – highly recommended!
Rayna — Google review
The Metz outpost of the famous Parisian contemporary art museum does not disappoint! The architecture is interesting and the exhibits are first class. The museum wasn't too busy either, which was rather nice. The kids very much enjoyed the museum as well, especially the temporary Maurizio Catellan exhibit. We found the staff to be friendly. Very highly recommended!
Roel F — Google review
This branch of the Pompidou modern art museum in Paris was opened in 2010. It is much more manageable than the main branch in Paris and the art is absolutely amazing. A 20 minute walk from the historic center of Metz. Or take the MA or MB bus using the ticket machines at most major stops. Highly recommend a 2-3 hour visit.
Mike Z — Google review
It's a great place in a must visit list. Exceptional experience, "creme de la creme", like French says. The retrospective of Cattelan's art is higher than stars.

Metz Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, is a breathtaking Gothic masterpiece nestled in Metz, France. This architectural gem was constructed over several centuries, from the 13th to the 16th century, showcasing a captivating blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its most striking feature is its vast array of stained glass windows that span an astonishing 6,500 square meters—making it one of the largest collections in any church across France.
One of the most beautiful cathedrals I’ve ever visited. The stained glass windows are incredible, especially the ones by Chagall – they really stand out. The cathedral is huge and full of light, and you can feel the history as soon as you walk in. It’s free to enter, which is great, and it’s right in the centre of Metz so it’s easy to visit while walking around the old town. Definitely worth seeing if you’re in Metz, even just to sit inside for a few minutes and take in the atmosphere.
Kinan R — Google review
One of the most amazing cathedrals in France! When you stand in front of Metz Cathedral, you feel small and full of wonder. The golden stone shines in the sun, and the tall towers seem to touch the sky. Inside, the light is mystical. The stained-glass windows are not only from the Middle Ages but also modern, even by Chagall. They make the walls look alive with colors. It has the highest nave in France (41 meters), higher than Notre-Dame in Paris. It is called the “Lantern of God” because of more than 6,000 m² of stained glass.People say that at sunset, the golden stone creates an atmosphere that feels almost supernatural. This place is not just history. It is an experience. If you visit Metz, you cannot miss it.
Kseniia M — Google review
Walking into Metz Cathedral - if you’re not exactly used to walking into thousand year old cathedrals - will leave you speechless, overwhelmed, and possibly teary eyed. It’s an astonishing edifice and on a sunny day the interior dances and glimmers with light and colour from the 1000s of panes of glass. You also have to appreciate and respect that this building is in active and daily use, so please - please - remain silent as you slowly wander the perimeter to marvel at the wonder of just how this building came to be, and the architectural miracle it is.
Greg M — Google review
We visited the Metz Cathedral with a specific goal — to see the stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall, since Chagall was our compatriot, also from Belarus. The cathedral itself is magnificent, and the stained glass windows are absolutely mesmerizing. The light filtering through the colorful glass creates a magical effect — the patterns and colors evoke feelings that are simply beyond words. We couldn’t imagine anything that could make the experience even better, but while we were there, an organ concert began, and it turned the visit into something truly unforgettable. The combination of the music, the stained glass, and the atmosphere was enchanting. Since it all happened during the Christmas markets and holiday season, it became one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring experiences we’ve ever had.
Maryna K — Google review
Incredible cathedral in size, artistry, detail, and use of colors! Huge volume of space under immensely high ceilings and arches! Photos and video really don't do it justice.. The audio echoes and booms here. The richness of the murals, paintings, stained glass, and sculptures are mind-blowing! Definitely a must-see! No entrance fee, though parking is not free and space is limited. Public restrooms are across the street and are free, though not very clean; while there are urinals, there are no toilets, just holes in the ground.
Brian B — Google review
It is very beautiful from the outside, but much more beautiful inside! This is one of the tallest, most beautiful and majestic cathedrals I have ever seen. If not the most! Its stained glass windows are simply incomparable. In such a place you feel some elusive magic, especially with the sounds of the organ.
Aliaksei A — Google review
The Metz Cathedral is absolutely stunning. Its Gothic architecture and level of detail make it one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Europe. Inside, the enormous stained-glass windows — some of the largest in the world — create a magical atmosphere with the natural light. Walking through feels like a journey through history, with glasswork ranging from the 13th century to modern pieces by artists like Marc Chagall. The exterior is just as impressive, with intricate sculptures and an imposing presence right in the heart of the city. Take your time to explore every detail, and if possible, join a guided tour to fully appreciate its history and symbolism. Definitely a must-see when visiting Metz.
Alexandre M — Google review
Park nearby and admire one of France’s most stunning Gothic cathedrals, famous for its vast stained-glass windows (some by Marc Chagall). Even a 15-minute stop is worth it. The Gothic church originated in France in the 12th century, more precisely in the Île-de-France region (around Paris). I ranked it the most beautiful in Europe

Place St Louis is a medieval square located in the old center, featuring a long terrace of Renaissance houses with an impressive arcade. The architecture resembles that of Tuscany rather than eastern France, reflecting the prosperity of the city during the Middle Ages. Many buildings were inhabited by early bankers from Lombard in Italy, which explains their design influence.

The Basilica of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains is a simple stone church, one of the oldest in Europe, with an airy sanctuary and gardens. Originally a palaestra for training boxers and wrestlers, it later became part of a spa complex before being converted into a church in the 7th century. The basilica's history includes serving as a military warehouse and barracks until the 1900s.

The Opéra-Théâtre de Metz, built in the mid-18th century, is a stunning example of Tuscany-influenced neo-Classical architecture. Commissioned by Duke de Belle-Isle and designed by architect Jacques Oger, it's considered the oldest functioning opera house in France. Located not far from the Cathedral, this historic venue offers an excellent layout and comfortable seating for enjoying classical opera performances. Additionally, visitors can explore a small colorful garden nearby.
Very nice place in the centre of Metz. There is currently a small colourful and tropical garden to explore. Of course, this makes it even more beautiful when so many flowers are in bloom.

It is named after the former palace of the Austrasian kings and showcases artifacts from Roman to Renaissance times, along with art spanning from the 16th to 20th century.
This museum was absolutely amazing! I mean just wow! 45 plus floors and rooms of amazing art and sculptures! I couldn’t believe this place was free! An extraordinary museum which is literally a walk through time but with all the rooms completely capturing the moment. The displays are embedded into the rooms as though they were always there and those jn the basement levels really are as they are Roman ruins. I want to go back to take it all in all 45 rooms.

An absolute must do in Metz. Huge- huge - and sprawling museum coving millennia of metz’s history and the people that molded the city. A well put together of exhaustively researched exhibits and artefacts, excavations, and skeletons ( yep. Skeletons!) - you can easily spend a few hours here exploring around every corner and cabinet. Oh, and it’s free. Highly recommended.

Metz covered market, also known as the Episcopal Palace, is a bustling hub of activity with stalls open from 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday. You can savor a bowl of vegetable or fruit soup at Soupe A Soups or indulge in local meats and cheeses at Chez Mauricette. For a change of pace, visit the market located right in front of the cathedral where you can explore various stalls and even find stores selling artisan coffee roasting equipment.
Locals still shop here so it hasn’t been taken over by tourism. Fresh meats, breads and vegetables all found inside the covered market. Had coffee, quiche and a salad for breakfast. Also bought some sandwiches.

Located in the heart of Metz, France, Chapelle des Templiers is a stunning example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Dating back to the late 1100s and early 1200s, it is the only octagonal chapel in the Lorraine region. The interior boasts ribbed vaulting and colorful frescoes from the early 1300s depicting apostles and saints.

As a fan of History Channel's Curse of Oak Island with all their talk of the Knights Templar, I had to take the opportunity to see one of their chapels in person. Église Saint-Maximin de Metz is a Catholic church with a rich history and stunning architecture. The 12th-century choir, transept, and square tower showcase the Romanesque style. Inside, visitors can admire the exquisite stained glass windows designed by Jean Cocteau in the early 1960s. These modern artistic additions beautifully complement the medieval architecture. The church also offers various services such as Baptism, Communion, and weddings for local residents.
The greatest collection of stained glass windows in the world, dating back from the most renown artists in the middle-ages ( De Münster, de Clinchamp) to contemporary works from the greatest artists like Villon Bissiere and of course, the master of all masters, Marc Chagall. Just try to choose a sunny day and enjoy a festival of colors in the grandiose settings of this beautyfull Cathedral.

This gem is a Roman Catholic church in Metz, which is known for its unique blend of medieval and modern artistic elements. Originally built in the 12th century, it has undergone several modifications over the centuries. One of its most remarkable features is the set of stained glass windows created by artist Jean Cocteau in the 1960s, which add a contemporary touch to the otherwise Gothic and Baroque architecture.

Done mostly in shades of purple and red, the windows are a perfect expression of 20th century avant-garde's pantheism and post-colonialism: They're not particularly Christian, despite being executed in the sine qua non of religious art medium and housed in a tiny side-street church. African warrior women and fantastic horses, roses and Pacific-island totem poles are jumbled together with Christian symbols. Way, way better than the famed Chagall windows in the Metz Cathedral... Definitely worth the 15 minute walk from centre-ville.

Amazing stained glass by the poet Cocteau, not so religious, mainly about him and his artistic philosophy. Adds to the beauty and mystery of the old church though.

(Translated by Google) In the shopping mall I see some appetizing and "homemade" cheese pie slices. I take three, 4€ a slice anyway. In the evening after the meal... what a disappointment, it looks like anything but a cheese pie, it's dry (baked at the beginning of the week...) the pastry is better than fromage blanc. Even an industrial cake is better. I don't even dare compare it to a cheesecake. Without doubt one of the most expensive in Metz and its surroundings but surely the worst. (Original) Dans la galerie marchande j'aperçois des parts de tarte au fromage appétissantes et "faite maison" . J'en prends trois , 4€ quand même la part. Fortress
Fort Queuleu, also known as Fort Goebens, is a significant historical site in Metz. This 1870s fortress has a rich and complex history, serving as both a French Resistance memorial and a WWII Nazi internment and interrogation camp. The fort's architecture reflects a blend of old French style and modern German influences. Today, it stands as a place of remembrance and education, offering visitors the opportunity to explore its grounds, which include running paths and park areas.
When I went there I somehow felt how this place was during WW 2. Old place but nice. Free entry. People were running, cycling, walking their pets and play with kids. An interesting place knowing the history behind it. It is in a quiet neighborhood easily accessible from the main road. There's enough space in the yard for car parking.

Fort turned concentration camp turned park and museum. Definitely worth a visit. The site itself has so much history and greatly explains the recent history of the Lorraine region. The buildings are old and make great photos and it can get a bit spooky at night. There are pull up bars along the walking/jogging path and ruins of the old fort which make it interesting as you jog around. You can also get a tour of the SS concentration camp if you are interested.

Live music venue
Originally built as a military arsenal in 1864, the Arsenal in Metz has been transformed into a cultural hub. Renovated by architect Ricardo Bofill, it now houses one of Europe's most beautiful concert halls with exceptional acoustics and stunning decor. The complex includes three theaters, including the Grande Salle dedicated to music. It is home to the Lorraine National Orchestra and hosts prestigious temporary exhibitions.
It is a wonderful destination for any form of performance art. I Bel eve it was designed to be the seat of the Mets symphonic orchestra, but I've seen ballet there that was presented as well as any Opera house. The acoustics work very well! I do have one negative thing to note. The stairs leading from the entrance elevation to the seats below are so steep that my head started spinning. It doesn't have any railings for anyone who needs them.

The Camouflage Tower is a historical monument in Metz, France. It's a remnant of the city's old medieval walls, and one of the few that remains. The tower is surrounded by a beautiful garden, making it a lovely setting. It's also nearby attractions such as the Centre Pompidou-Metz and Metz Courthouse.
Remnant of the old medieval walls of Metz, one of few preserved walls in Metz. It's listed as a historical monument. Visited again in January twenty-twenty and still as majestic to look at. Built mid 1400 as a rampart tower and one of the rarest medieval tower enclosure still exists. It's surrounded by a beautiful garden with few benches making it a beautiful setting. Nestled in the heart of Metz, the Grenier de Chèvremont stands as a remarkable testament to the city's rich history. Constructed in 1457, this impressive municipal granary features striking battlements that add to its medieval charm. Visitors can explore its ground floor, which is part of the Cour d'Or museum and offers fascinating insights into Metz's early development.

Henry K — Google review
(Translated by Google) I was particularly impressed during my visit to this historic site, this granary on rue Chèvremont in Metz because it is another architecture, typical and particular to this city of Metz, the commercial one, that of the granaries. Rich Metz had this "Chambre des Marchands" and the ships coming from the Rhine transported and brought to the Rhinport, between the Pont des Grilles and the Pont Saint-Georges, various goods and grains stored in the city's granary, rue de Chèvremont, immense building built from 1457, pierced with numerous rectangular windows and crowned with battlements. Storage was also carried out at the Grange des Antonistes, or at the Grange du Saint-Esprit, in Chaplerue, which has now disappeared. This imposing building, the Chèvremont attic, was built in 1456-1457. Furthermore, the vintage “1536” accompanied by the initials “PP.FF.” is engraved on the exterior buttress. This building rises on 5 levels and its exterior wall is curved to follow the bend of rue de Chèvremont which runs alongside it. Each level is clearly marked by the presence of small rectangular bays framed in cut stone. The walls are built of coated rubble stones and reinforced by corner chains, as old documents show. These also allow us to see that the ground floor was also openworked by rectangular bays, blocked off on the short and long sides, and partially replaced here by semicircular arcaded arches, probably in the 16th century. It was also at this time, and undoubtedly because of this development, that the wall on the long side, approximately 31 m, was reinforced by the installation of a powerful buttress. The top of the wall, lined with cut stone, is crenellated and rises above the slope of the roof, which partially hides it (as in private houses of this period). The runoff of rainwater is therefore captured by concave gargoyles projecting strongly from the wall. It is difficult to know if the height of the hipped roof which covers the building respects that of the original. The interior of the attic, although strictly utilitarian, is not devoid of aesthetics. On all floors, the space is divided into 7 bays of 4 naves by a series of columns. However, on the ground floor, these columns carry semicircular arches (only one is broken) and on the upper floors, oak cross beams. Here the supports have become very squat and the cubic capitals oversized, but from floor to floor, the shafts and capitals are superimposed, becoming lighter, which means that all the levels have a different appearance. The solid appearance, dimensions and height of this attic play an important role in relation to its real function as a food store, but also in relation to its symbolic function, as an ostentatious building visible from a distance. Indeed, the high storage capacity of the granary indicates not only the prosperity of the city but also its ability to resist any enemy siege in the event of conflict. This building therefore has an eminently economic value, but it also responds in a certain way to the political concerns of the city. To continue our visit to Metz, we can head towards the Ste Ségolène church which is a hundred meters away, then towards this old private mansion, the Saint-Livier hotel nearby, then towards the Place Ste Croix where find the Hôtel De Heu dating from the Middle Ages and, see also the medieval house at n°8 and 10 place Ste Croix, then towards the Rabelais house at n°5 En Jurue. Please put “a like or helpful” to encourage me in my approach. Good walk. Best regards, Eric Tison. F-57 Metz. Bonne ballade. Best regards, Eric Tison. F-57 Metz.

Hôtel de Ville-Mairie de Metz, located next to the cathedral, is a striking example of the city's architectural history. Today, it serves as the City Hall housing various municipal services and the mayor's office.
Absolutely stupendous and beautiful Square with historical cobbled pavement. Bordered by the Gothic Metz cathedral and Town Hall. This is the Old Town of Metz. The Square was created by order of King Louis XV as location for all things powerful like the executive, legislative and judiciary. This is a stunning area to explore. Employees in charge of the population register are efficient (and you can pick up your IDs every weekdays without appointments from 8h to 8h30/13h to 13h30) But regarding the reception desk, let's just say politely that getting information from them is quite a folkloric experience.

(Translated by Google) Surprise... I left France several years ago for various reasons, but the quality of welcome I received from the various government departments was one of my biggest frustrations. This morning, I went to Metz City Hall, where I was warmly welcomed at the entrance by a lovely and energetic young woman. Then, at the administrative formalities office, three women greeted me with a smile and kindness. The icing on the cake: I completed my forms in no time... A first for me in almost 50 years, so it's worth noting! (Original) Surprise…

The Tour du Temple de La Garnison de Metz is a historic landmark in Metz, originally built as a Lutheran church for German soldiers during the city's time under German rule. The tower, standing at nearly 100 meters tall, is the only remaining structure of the once prominent church after it was damaged during World War II. It stands as a symbol of the city's architectural and cultural history. Visitors can easily find the tower while exploring nearby attractions and enjoy taking pictures in its open surroundings.

A huge empty tower (it was a church till the ww2) almost 100m high, awesome to see.
Kast K — Google review
Built when Metz was part of the German empire. It was built in 1881 for German soldiers of Lutheran faith. Metz underwent extensive architectural change to make it look more German and this church was part of the plan. In 1902, Pastor Albert Schweitzer, future Nobel Peace Prize winner, gave an organ concert but the structure got damaged during world war 2. After the war, only the tower left standing as part of the iconic Metz skyline.
Robin I — Google review
Easy to find while walking around to see other places nearby. There is a park with some seats to give your feet some rest for a while. Taking picture is easy as the tower stands in a wide-open space, traffic is not quite busy but always watch your back.
