The Palais-Musée des Archevêques, also known as the Palais Vieux, is a remarkable building that dates back to the 1200s. With Gothic additions and a tower that offers stunning views of the town, it is a true architectural gem. The complex boasts an array of museums and activities to explore. While the old palais may occasionally be closed, visitors can still enjoy the incredible donjon tower.
A nice museum with lots of stairs. Be prepared to walk up and down a lot. You can buy a combined ticket to visit the defensive tower, the castle (it’s the museum) and a treasury in the cathedral. This museum has lots of porcelains which is untypical for such museums in my experience. Also there are lots of emblems with explanations of its meaning and origins which made me very happy as I’m a big fan of it. Next to the castle there are often temporary exhibitions.
Kirill M — Google review
The ticket for the museum includes the art gallery, the watchtower and the treasury in the cathedral. I feel this is a must for visitors. The watchtower gives impressive views and is accessible via a long spiral staircase. The art gallery has a variety of different styles art and ceramics. There is a section dedicated French art based North Africa themes. The Cathedral treasury also has some interesting pieces. On our visit there was a free exhibit accessed from the open courtyard of Marti Moreno's sculptures which we really enjoyed. There is also a beautiful sculpture of a woman with tattoos.

Very interesting visit in this former Archbishops' Palace, which along with the Gothic cloister and the Cathedral of Saint-Just and Saint-Pasteur, forms a unique monumental ensemble, both residence and fortress, like the Papal Palace in Avignon. Two towers flank the Palais Neuf and the neo-Gothic façade, designed by Viollet-le-Duc to house the Town Hall in 1845 : on one side, the imposing Gilles Aycelin Keep (late 13th century), and on the other, the smaller Saint Martial Tower (1347). The Passage de l'Ancre, whose name evokes the coastal rights collected by the archbishops, separates the Palais Neuf from the original Romanesque palace known as the Palais Vieux, currently closed for renovation, and connects to the cloister and the cathedral. This museum located in the Palais Neuf, designed between the 14th and 19th centuries, allows you discover the archbishops' former apartments and the very rich art collections. The exhibition features paintings from European schools from the 16th to the 19th centuries, a remarkable collection of 17th and 18th-century earthenware, furniture, and a large section of Orientalist paintings. The spaces and their decor are themselves sumptuous and well worth a visit: the painted ceilings of the great Audience Hall (1634), the King's Chamber (1632), and the Great Gallery (1851), as well as the Archbishops' Dining Room (18th century) and its plasterwork decorations dedicated to nature and hunting.

Beautiful place, filled with history, which offers a great vantage point of the city of Narbonne. Friendly staff, cheap entry… We didn’t stay very long so we didn’t see all it had to offers but there is plenty to see (sculptures, paintings, old faience, architecture). Well worth the visit!

Beautiful palace that once served as the residence of the archbishops of Narbonne. The palace is now a well-organized and very informative museum that showcases the history of the region. The building itself is stunning, with beautiful gardens and amazing architectural details. The admission fee is reasonable. This is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in history and architecture.

An excellent set of rooms to wander through. One housed louis 13 th at one point. There's an interesting story about that told in the room. Lots of art to see. I was particularly impressed by the exhibition on orientalism in French art. Some good views of the cathedral from the tower as well. Well worth all the stairs.
Jamie H — Google review
Certainly a "Must See" attraction in Narbonne. Tickets are 6 Euro and allow you to visit a number of room in the palace. A climb to the tower top is worth the 149 steps up the spiral staircase and the views out over Narbonne are great. My favourite was the actual Archbishop's residence which is now an art gallery. The rooms displaying the are are almost better than the art itself. ALso be sure to see the gargoyles guarding the garden.

Narbonne Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece built between 1272 and 1340, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Although left unfinished, its impressive transept and soaring 40-meter choir, adorned with exquisite tapestries, are awe-inspiring. The cathedral boasts remarkable stained glass windows and ancient gravestones within its walls.
Narbonne Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur) is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking cathedrals in the world. If you are visiting the south of France, this masterpiece of Gothic architecture is an absolute must-see! From the moment you lay eyes on its towering, unfinished walls, you can feel the weight of history and artistry that went into its construction. The cathedral was built in the 13th century and remains an incredible example of French Gothic design. Despite never being completed, its sheer scale and intricate details make it one of the most fascinating and beautiful religious sites in Europe. Stepping inside, the first thing that strikes you is the soaring height of the nave. The ribbed vaults and grand arches create a sense of awe that is hard to describe. The stained-glass windows are simply stunning, casting vibrant colors across the stone walls and filling the space with an ethereal glow. Each window tells a story, and if you take the time to admire them, you’ll discover scenes from biblical history brought to life
Raquel S — Google review
Though relatively modest in size, the Narbonne Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur) leaves a lasting impression through its rich ornamentation and artistic treasures. Among its standout features are the exquisite gobelins—tapestries that add warmth and grandeur to the Gothic interior. The space, while not vast, feels intimate and regal, thanks to the abundance of decorative details and ecclesiastical jewels. It’s a hidden gem where scale is secondary to splendor.
Felipe B — Google review
Fantastic 13th and 14th century cathedral which is Narbonne's most prestigious monument and a major building in the Gothic style of southern France. Its construction was ordered in 1268 by Pope Clement IV, former Archbishop of Narbonne and advisor to Saint-Louis. It was dedicated to the young Spanish martyrs Justus and Pasteur. Its choir, the 5th highest in France, reaches over 41 m under the keystone, and the Gothic altarpiece (14th century) of the axial chapel is a masterpiece of European Gothic sculpture. The cathedral forms a unique ensemble with the Archbishops' Palace-Museum. It connects with the current city center, an essential place in Narbonne life where you can admire the 12th century Palais-Vieux building, the Madeleine keep built in the 13th century and connected by an arch spanning the Passage de l'Ancre to the Saint-Martial tower from the early 14th century. At the top of the south tower is the "Bourdon," a large bell weighing 5 tons. It was the only bell to escape melting during the revolutionary days of 1793. Around 4 p.m., the Saint-Just bourdon chimes its deep notes above the rooftops in memory of the plague epidemic that devastated the city in 1652. Despite various attempts, the nave of this cathedral was never completed; it was to extend for a hundred meters more. The cloister galleries are interesting as well to discover. On the upper floor of the Chapel of the Annunciation, in a brick-vaulted room, called "Chapter Room" features a square-shaped room covered by a brick dome that creates a curious acoustic phenomenon of sound propagation from one corner of the room to the other. Indeed, if you whisper in a corner facing the wall, you can be heard perfectly on the opposite side! The Treasury brings together pieces from the Carolingian period to the modern era: a 9th-century carved ivory Gospel plaque, an 11th-century Hispano-Moresque pyxis, the illuminated pontifical of Archbishop Pierre de la Jugie, the Flemish tapestry of the Creation circa 1500, as well as other exceptional liturgical objects that testify to the great wealth of the archbishops of Narbonne ! Finally, save your legs and your breath to climb the 162 steps of the magnificent spiral staircase. At 42 meters high, you will enjoy an exceptional view of the city of Narbonne, from the coast to the Pyrenees. The keep, one of the best preserved in the south of France, is a powerful square tower, at the corner of the Palais Neuf, built from 1295 to 1306 by Archbishop Gilles Aycelin, also an advisor to King Philip IV Le Bel. It consists of four rooms : the hemispherical room called Treasury room, the king's chamber and the defense room ...

Beautiful cathedral with lots to look at, and information in many languages available near the front of the church. We got tickets to the Treasury and we're not disappointed. On Saturday morning the organist was warming up and it was incredible, not sure if that is every Saturday morning, but to hear that organ was incredible.

Pont des Marchands in Narbonne is a picturesque bridge over the town's canal, lined with charming houses on its outer side and a bustling shopping street on its inner side. It holds historical significance as it was crossed by the Via Domitia, and has been frequented by famous historical figures. Although temporarily closed for construction, visitors can still enjoy nearby shops such as bookstores and clothing stores.
(Translated by Google) After the closing hours of the stores it is very quiet even though there are passersby on the street, you can feel the pre-Christmas atmosphere. There are areas with fewer shops and others that are more striking due to the decoration of their shop windows. (Translated by Google) A bridge... that we cross without realizing it! It's quite funny: while strolling in the center of Narbonne, you take rue du Pont des Marchands without realizing that you are crossing a bridge! And yet, this bridge is one of the oldest in France, dating from Roman times. It spans the Robine canal and is unique in its kind, because it is still inhabited. Formerly made up of six or seven arches, only one is still visible today, the others having been integrated into the buildings which line the street. This makes the bridge look like an ordinary shopping street, but with a fascinating history. It is a place steeped in history, witness to the evolution of Narbonne over the centuries. A must-visit for lovers of heritage and architecture.

One of the few inhabited bridges in France, the Pont des Marchands in Narbonne blends Roman roots with medieval charm. Once part of the ancient Via Domitia, it now hosts a row of small shops and apartments perched above the Canal de la Robine. Though only a single arch remains, its atmosphere is unforgettable—intimate, historic, and full of character. A quiet highlight for those who enjoy cities where history lives on in everyday life.

August 2025: La Via Domitia is a historic Roman road that holds significant importance in the history of Narbonne and the wider region of southern France. Built in 118 BC, it was the first Roman road in Gaul and served as a vital link between Italy and Hispania (modern-day Spain) by traversing the province of Gallia Narbonensis.
Mike773 U — Google review
Lovely landmark located in the historic heart of the city, 2 meters below the modern ground. One can see slabs, uncovered and left open to the sky : it is like a small amphitheater, with steps. You can go down and tread in the footsteps of the Romans. It was built to facilitate trade between Rome and the Roman colonies in Spain. It passes through the south of France, at the Col de Montgenèvre, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, above Briançon. It follows the course of the Durance, and then descends towards the former Languedoc-Roussillon. We will say that it follows roughly the route of the A9 motorway to the Spanish border, at the Col du Pertus. The chariot wheels were spaced roughly the same way, since at the level of the pavements, there are wheel marks and the gauge is roughly equal. These roads were only paved in the stopovers and towns. In the hinterland, it was beaten earth. To facilitate travel, milestones marked the "Via Domitia"... and in the Narbonne region, the most famous is in Sigean ...

Abbaye de Fontfroide is a historic former Cistercian monastery located in the Corbieres countryside near Narbonne. With over 1000 years of history, it attracts around 10,000 visitors annually. The abbey was initially built by monks in a secluded valley and was later restored to its former glory in the early 20th century. Today, it offers various events throughout the summer such as plant festivals, medieval days, music festivals, and exhibitions.
Super Abbaye to while away a couple of hours. Steeped in history from the 12th century, amazing to think we're walking where the very first monks we're walking !! Praying !! The cloisters are fabulous, currently covered with Wisteria, so smell and look amazing. There is an English leaflet usually , apparently, although they'd run out of them at our visit. Beautiful gardens with walking routes from easy to longer/harder. Absolutely a must to look round. €14 an adult. Lots of parking - specific MH/Camper area . Toilets etc restaurant in the courtyard, as is a wine shop. Gift shop in the entry of the Abbey. Friendly Englush speaking guy at reception. Well worth a visit. Stunning Abbey Chapel.

An amazing must see in the Cathar Route. Also recommended the wine store, we purchased several bottles. Pity the restaurant, it was fully booked and we could only have some cheese and focaccia in the terrace, where a mentally derailed person was mad at my daughter (3 y.o.) because she was hungry. Interesting to see how mental illness affects the life of people, sadly. Beautiful monuments in the way and around, pay attention when driving!

Amazing experience, you must stop here, it’s so close to Narbonne! Pro tip: wear hiking shoes and bring water, there are really great hiking trails from the abbey. The gardens are magnificent. The abbey information is great, you really delve into the medieval experience. Also there’s a café for lunch so all your needs are met: gardens, food, hiking, medieval history, stunning views! Easy parking lot also.

Worth a visit, the tour was good but not cheap. The wine was a little young for our liking, so we put our bottles down for a future date. Cafe is very efficient, recommend you book if you want a restaurant meal.

Beautiful way to spend a few hours. It was not busy when we went and it took us 2 hours to stroll through. Parking was ample and though dogs are not allowed in, I found it nice that they had a few kennels you could store your dog in while you visited. There is a restaurant at the entrance and we grabbed a drink to go, they let us bring it inside. As you walk in toward the abbey, there are planters filled with all kinds of herbs. That area smelled so amazing. You show your ticket to the person at the abbey entrance and they scan it. We did not buy ours in advance but you can. There are guided tours but we just wanted to go at our own pace. It's a beautiful building and the gardens are serene. We got lots of great pics. Definitely a good choice for a sidetrip.

Narbo Via museum, located at the eastern entrance of the town, showcases the significance of Narbonne as an ancient commercial hub and features refurbished mosaics and a collection of 760 fragments of funerary steles. The museum provides insights into the city's history as a crucial harbor in Roman times. Despite some initial disappointment with the display, visitors are impressed by the informative graphics and multilingual descriptions accompanying the exhibits.
The museum is an incredible treasure trove, showcasing a rich collection of ancient artifacts from the Roman Empire era, making it a historical haven for children and archaeology enthusiasts alike.

Excellent brand new museum (2020) made from combining two major Roman museum collections originally in Narbonne's old city. They have a collection of beautiful rare frescoes from a villa found nearby, as well as a great set of interactive exhibits on Narbonne's role as the prosperous Roman trade capitol of Gaul--based on artifacts from nearby shipwrecks. Well worth a visit.

Absolutely fascinating, both for content and presentation. Parking is difficult. How do you plan a new museum without a parking lot? But that’s a quibble. This is a Must See if you are into the history of the region or if you are interested in how far new museum design has come.
Ira F — Google review
An excellent experience, contained in unexpectedly beautiful architecture. If you enjoy Roman stuff, you will find the exhibition interesting, particularly the wonderful interactive section. The permanent exhibition is also well presented and educative, although the wall of blocks, though stunning in presentation, remains a little lacklustre - though it's hard to imagine that it could be more interesting than it was. A huge plus is the size of the exhibition; not so large that it becomes torture, not so small that it is not immersive. Highly recommended.
Alexander J — Google review
An airy and contemporary arrangement of the rich Roman history of Narbonne. It was wonderful to see such local artefacts and it really brought the Roman times of Narbonne to life. The interactive screens accompanying relics like headstones, burial tombs and statues from the Roman times brought the people they memorialised to life. A pleasant 2 hours to spend in Narbonne and easy to arrive by bike. The temporary exhibition was less interesting and no English guide.

The Roman Granary Museum in Narbonne offers guided tours of its subterranean warehouse system, which was originally built by the ancient Romans. This important Roman city has seen multiple re-uses over the centuries, with examples such as the Roman grain storage chambers being repurposed as medieval cellars. Visitors can also explore a small excavated section of the Via Domitia, one of the main Roman roads in France, located next to the main cathedral.
There is a chance to see a 2000 years old underground tunnels built by Romans. It’s a very interesting idea to combine the history of the region, archeology and some interactive quest you can take part in. Please, note that the museum has a break at midday and starts working at 14.00. Check its opening hours.

Fantastic and unexpected site. Many of the signs were in French and English which was great because data doesn't work so well underground in stone hallways. It was incredible to walk in the footsteps of first century Romans who would be storing goods here. We went to Narbonne Via after to see all the relics that had been sent to that museum.
Sara R — Google review
Interesting place to visit if you like Roman history. A minute or two from the cathedral, the museum is mostly underground in passageways that used to be the Granary. There is a display next to the gift shop showing the original layout. In the garden outside there are plaques and statues. The 5 euro entrance fee was reasonable

I regularly visit this supermarket. After an short initial "getting used to it period" I like it. Staff is friendly and helpful. A few hints - get their loyalty card and sign up for the 10% off program. That comes at a small charge but for us the charge is covered quickly and after that it's pure savings. Also, many deals with the loyalty card but you need to activate them first in the app. A bit of a hassle but the saving is worth it

Additionally, visitors can take advantage of amenities such as bicycle rentals, room service, and a multilingual staff. Situated near popular attractions like Narbonne Cathedral and the canal, this Victorian hotel provides a convenient and comfortable stay for travelers.
Right off the canal. Has a lock up for bikes. Kids loved the delicious breakfast buffet. Room was very comfortable, spacious and bright. Slept well. Front desk staff very nice.

This hotel absolutely exceeded expectations. My train was delayed so I called and let them know and someone stayed to let me in, which was around 11:30 PM. It was great service. I was extremely pleasantly surprised that they have an elevator, which is not a given in Europe. It was so easy to get my heavy bags up to my room on the top floor. The room is well appointed, very clean, and has a great view. The bed was extremely comfortable, but to be fair, I could have slept on a rock I was to tired when I arrived. The location is very convenient for the best restaurants, sites, and the train station.
Kat E — Google review
Really loved our stay here. The staff were so friendly and helpful, with nothing being too much of a problem. Our room was spotlessly clean and had all the essentials card for. Lovely bathroom. Some very minor criticism about sticking door, old shutters that were difficult to close. Perfect location for the historic centre of town and the canal. We would highly recommend. Thank you to the whole team for making our stay very special.
Joe H — Google review
Charming, family run hotel in the heart of Narbonne. Very comfortable and large (for France) rooms. We had a lovely courtyard and cathedral view. Check-in process was easy and the reception person was delightful. Be aware that there are no room safes if that's a concern for you. Also, the lift takes you up to each primary floor, but some rooms are 1/2 flight of stairs up or down from the lift. Wasn't an issue for us but if you have mobility issues or heavy bags, ask for a floor that lets out on the same level as the lift.
Kathryn W — Google review
Had a very pleasant stay at the hotel. It has a great location close to the main historical sites, the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast buffet was tasty, and they catered for my gluten-free requirements. Had a great view from our window of the cathedral and the bed was comfortable. Would definitely recommend. Great location with all the expected amenities.
Dan S — Google review
Beautiful interior, welcoming atmosphere, and friendly staff ! The rate was €120 per night and the hostess is multilingual. She was very generous and prepared breakfast at 5 am just for me, so that I could catch the train at 6 (normal breakfast hours are 7~10h). They also had plenty of phone chargers. The rooms are very clean. Mine had a chandelier and the bedding was very comfortable. If there was anything to improve, the shower and sink area were only separated by a half of a wall, so a shower curtain would be nice, along with 3 separated bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap (there was only a three-in-one). However, everything else deserves 5 stars and a good review ! I would definitively stay here again.
Allison A — Google review
Fantastic boutique hotel. Centrally located. Rooms were comfortable. Buffet breakfast was excellent and much more expansive than many in France. We will certainly return. There is an elevator to the upper floors.

Giving this place 5 stars based on front desk staff/service. Very helpful and accommodating. My room was very small but efficient - glad I was not sharing - but then again I booked a single. Comfortable bed with good sheets. Hotel lobby has a nice living room for guests to hang out. Hotel gusts ONLY. Some good wines offered on wine list. For those who care about air quality - easy to open windows for fresh air.

The experience on this hotel was mixed. The restaurant's food and service was amazing. Hotel did not advised me that the chateaux was heavily in construction/ renovation. We were given a disability room - when we were not disabled. Room service was poor and staff did not want to engage with customers that do not speak french and made us feel unconfortable because of not speaking the language. It is ovbious the hotel is growing and has potential however if you have the opportunity go to another place until fully renovated and staff has a more global mindset, please do so

I had booked a 3 night stay in the Hortense Suite for June 2019. Initially even though correspondence was slow the booking process was okay & reception was helpful. 3 days before we were supposed to fly out to Europe my wife had a accident which required surgery & so I have had to cancel my whole trip to Europe. I have tried to contact Chateau Le Bouis on at least 10 occasions to cancel my booking & to see if I would receive any refund or if I needed to claim on my travel insurance. To date there has been absolutely no response from them, as such I have now lost $1,100.00 AUD for the accommodation as my travel insurance will not cover this without some confirmation from Chateau Le Bouis I would never recommend this place due to the fact that they have not responded to my repeated request & that I have lost so much money for nothing.

Basilique Saint-Paul in Narbonne is a Gothic church built on the tomb of the city's first bishop, Saint Paul. Dating back to the 12th century, it stands on an early Christian cemetery from the 3rd and 4th centuries. The architecture is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, showcasing a rich and ancient history.
Lovely old church, but the real draw card is the palaeo Christian cemetery beneath the church. It was fascinating and a little macabre. Tomb stones, open graves with skeletons and bones poking out of the soil!
