Narbonne Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece built between 1272 and 1340, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Although left unfinished, its impressive transept and soaring 40-meter choir, adorned with exquisite tapestries, are awe-inspiring. The cathedral boasts remarkable stained glass windows and ancient gravestones within its walls.
Narbonne Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur) is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking cathedrals in the world. If you are visiting the south of France, this masterpiece of Gothic architecture is an absolute must-see! From the moment you lay eyes on its towering, unfinished walls, you can feel the weight of history and artistry that went into its construction. The cathedral was built in the 13th century and remains an incredible example of French Gothic design. Despite never being completed, its sheer scale and intricate details make it one of the most fascinating and beautiful religious sites in Europe. Stepping inside, the first thing that strikes you is the soaring height of the nave. The ribbed vaults and grand arches create a sense of awe that is hard to describe. The stained-glass windows are simply stunning, casting vibrant colors across the stone walls and filling the space with an ethereal glow. Each window tells a story, and if you take the time to admire them, you’ll discover scenes from biblical history brought to life

Though relatively modest in size, the Narbonne Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur) leaves a lasting impression through its rich ornamentation and artistic treasures. Among its standout features are the exquisite gobelins—tapestries that add warmth and grandeur to the Gothic interior. The space, while not vast, feels intimate and regal, thanks to the abundance of decorative details and ecclesiastical jewels. It’s a hidden gem where scale is secondary to splendor.
Felipe B — Google review
Fantastic 13th and 14th century cathedral which is Narbonne's most prestigious monument and a major building in the Gothic style of southern France. Its construction was ordered in 1268 by Pope Clement IV, former Archbishop of Narbonne and advisor to Saint-Louis. It was dedicated to the young Spanish martyrs Justus and Pasteur. Its choir, the 5th highest in France, reaches over 41 m under the keystone, and the Gothic altarpiece (14th century) of the axial chapel is a masterpiece of European Gothic sculpture. The cathedral forms a unique ensemble with the Archbishops' Palace-Museum. It connects with the current city center, an essential place in Narbonne life where you can admire the 12th century Palais-Vieux building, the Madeleine keep built in the 13th century and connected by an arch spanning the Passage de l'Ancre to the Saint-Martial tower from the early 14th century. At the top of the south tower is the "Bourdon," a large bell weighing 5 tons. It was the only bell to escape melting during the revolutionary days of 1793. Around 4 p.m., the Saint-Just bourdon chimes its deep notes above the rooftops in memory of the plague epidemic that devastated the city in 1652. Despite various attempts, the nave of this cathedral was never completed; it was to extend for a hundred meters more. The cloister galleries are interesting as well to discover. On the upper floor of the Chapel of the Annunciation, in a brick-vaulted room, called "Chapter Room" features a square-shaped room covered by a brick dome that creates a curious acoustic phenomenon of sound propagation from one corner of the room to the other. Indeed, if you whisper in a corner facing the wall, you can be heard perfectly on the opposite side! The Treasury brings together pieces from the Carolingian period to the modern era: a 9th-century carved ivory Gospel plaque, an 11th-century Hispano-Moresque pyxis, the illuminated pontifical of Archbishop Pierre de la Jugie, the Flemish tapestry of the Creation circa 1500, as well as other exceptional liturgical objects that testify to the great wealth of the archbishops of Narbonne ! Finally, save your legs and your breath to climb the 162 steps of the magnificent spiral staircase. At 42 meters high, you will enjoy an exceptional view of the city of Narbonne, from the coast to the Pyrenees. The keep, one of the best preserved in the south of France, is a powerful square tower, at the corner of the Palais Neuf, built from 1295 to 1306 by Archbishop Gilles Aycelin, also an advisor to King Philip IV Le Bel. It consists of four rooms : the hemispherical room called Treasury room, the king's chamber and the defense room ...

Beautiful cathedral with lots to look at, and information in many languages available near the front of the church. We got tickets to the Treasury and we're not disappointed. On Saturday morning the organist was warming up and it was incredible, not sure if that is every Saturday morning, but to hear that organ was incredible.

The Palais-Musée des Archevêques, also known as the Palais Vieux, is a remarkable building that dates back to the 1200s. With Gothic additions and a tower that offers stunning views of the town, it is a true architectural gem. The complex boasts an array of museums and activities to explore. While the old palais may occasionally be closed, visitors can still enjoy the incredible donjon tower.
A nice museum with lots of stairs. Be prepared to walk up and down a lot. You can buy a combined ticket to visit the defensive tower, the castle (it’s the museum) and a treasury in the cathedral. This museum has lots of porcelains which is untypical for such museums in my experience. Also there are lots of emblems with explanations of its meaning and origins which made me very happy as I’m a big fan of it. Next to the castle there are often temporary exhibitions.
Kirill M — Google review
The ticket for the museum includes the art gallery, the watchtower and the treasury in the cathedral. I feel this is a must for visitors. The watchtower gives impressive views and is accessible via a long spiral staircase. The art gallery has a variety of different styles art and ceramics. There is a section dedicated French art based North Africa themes. The Cathedral treasury also has some interesting pieces. On our visit there was a free exhibit accessed from the open courtyard of Marti Moreno's sculptures which we really enjoyed. There is also a beautiful sculpture of a woman with tattoos.

Very interesting visit in this former Archbishops' Palace, which along with the Gothic cloister and the Cathedral of Saint-Just and Saint-Pasteur, forms a unique monumental ensemble, both residence and fortress, like the Papal Palace in Avignon. Two towers flank the Palais Neuf and the neo-Gothic façade, designed by Viollet-le-Duc to house the Town Hall in 1845 : on one side, the imposing Gilles Aycelin Keep (late 13th century), and on the other, the smaller Saint Martial Tower (1347). The Passage de l'Ancre, whose name evokes the coastal rights collected by the archbishops, separates the Palais Neuf from the original Romanesque palace known as the Palais Vieux, currently closed for renovation, and connects to the cloister and the cathedral. This museum located in the Palais Neuf, designed between the 14th and 19th centuries, allows you discover the archbishops' former apartments and the very rich art collections. The exhibition features paintings from European schools from the 16th to the 19th centuries, a remarkable collection of 17th and 18th-century earthenware, furniture, and a large section of Orientalist paintings. The spaces and their decor are themselves sumptuous and well worth a visit: the painted ceilings of the great Audience Hall (1634), the King's Chamber (1632), and the Great Gallery (1851), as well as the Archbishops' Dining Room (18th century) and its plasterwork decorations dedicated to nature and hunting.

Beautiful place, filled with history, which offers a great vantage point of the city of Narbonne. Friendly staff, cheap entry… We didn’t stay very long so we didn’t see all it had to offers but there is plenty to see (sculptures, paintings, old faience, architecture). Well worth the visit!

Beautiful palace that once served as the residence of the archbishops of Narbonne. The palace is now a well-organized and very informative museum that showcases the history of the region. The building itself is stunning, with beautiful gardens and amazing architectural details. The admission fee is reasonable. This is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in history and architecture.
Roberto P — Google review
An excellent set of rooms to wander through. One housed louis 13 th at one point. There's an interesting story about that told in the room. Lots of art to see. I was particularly impressed by the exhibition on orientalism in French art. Some good views of the cathedral from the tower as well. Well worth all the stairs.
Jamie H — Google review
Certainly a "Must See" attraction in Narbonne. Tickets are 6 Euro and allow you to visit a number of room in the palace. A climb to the tower top is worth the 149 steps up the spiral staircase and the views out over Narbonne are great. My favourite was the actual Archbishop's residence which is now an art gallery. The rooms displaying the are are almost better than the art itself. ALso be sure to see the gargoyles guarding the garden.

Narbonne is a city rich in Roman history, with remnants of the ancient road La Via Domitia waiting to be discovered. This well-preserved section of the road once connected Italy to Spain and offers stunning views of surrounding buildings. Visitors can explore ancient ruins and historical sites along this route, making it a must-visit destination for anyone in the area. The city's old town also features a beautiful cathedral surrounded by historical buildings and houses, creating a charming atmosphere that invites exploration.
It was an amazing experience to learn that this small area is an ancient Roman road that once connected Italy to Spain. The road is well-preserved and offers stunning views of the surrounding buildings. Along the way, you can visit ancient ruins, and other historical sites. This is definitely a must-visit destination for those in the area.

August 2025: La Via Domitia is a historic Roman road that holds significant importance in the history of Narbonne and the wider region of southern France. Built in 118 BC, it was the first Roman road in Gaul and served as a vital link between Italy and Hispania (modern-day Spain) by traversing the province of Gallia Narbonensis.
Mike773 U — Google review
Lovely landmark located in the historic heart of the city, 2 meters below the modern ground. One can see slabs, uncovered and left open to the sky : it is like a small amphitheater, with steps. You can go down and tread in the footsteps of the Romans. It was built to facilitate trade between Rome and the Roman colonies in Spain. It passes through the south of France, at the Col de Montgenèvre, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, above Briançon. It follows the course of the Durance, and then descends towards the former Languedoc-Roussillon. We will say that it follows roughly the route of the A9 motorway to the Spanish border, at the Col du Pertus. The chariot wheels were spaced roughly the same way, since at the level of the pavements, there are wheel marks and the gauge is roughly equal. These roads were only paved in the stopovers and towns. In the hinterland, it was beaten earth. To facilitate travel, milestones marked the "Via Domitia"... and in the Narbonne region, the most famous is in Sigean ...

Narbo Via museum, located at the eastern entrance of the town, showcases the significance of Narbonne as an ancient commercial hub and features refurbished mosaics and a collection of 760 fragments of funerary steles. The museum provides insights into the city's history as a crucial harbor in Roman times. Despite some initial disappointment with the display, visitors are impressed by the informative graphics and multilingual descriptions accompanying the exhibits.
The museum is an incredible treasure trove, showcasing a rich collection of ancient artifacts from the Roman Empire era, making it a historical haven for children and archaeology enthusiasts alike.
Pham C — Google review
Excellent brand new museum (2020) made from combining two major Roman museum collections originally in Narbonne's old city. They have a collection of beautiful rare frescoes from a villa found nearby, as well as a great set of interactive exhibits on Narbonne's role as the prosperous Roman trade capitol of Gaul--based on artifacts from nearby shipwrecks. Well worth a visit.
Paula E — Google review
Amazing. With the musee de la Romanite in Nimes, this is the best museum I know in France about Roman times.
Frederic L — Google review
Absolutely fascinating, both for content and presentation. Parking is difficult. How do you plan a new museum without a parking lot? But that’s a quibble. This is a Must See if you are into the history of the region or if you are interested in how far new museum design has come.
Ira F — Google review
An excellent experience, contained in unexpectedly beautiful architecture. If you enjoy Roman stuff, you will find the exhibition interesting, particularly the wonderful interactive section. The permanent exhibition is also well presented and educative, although the wall of blocks, though stunning in presentation, remains a little lacklustre - though it's hard to imagine that it could be more interesting than it was. A huge plus is the size of the exhibition; not so large that it becomes torture, not so small that it is not immersive. Highly recommended.
Alexander J — Google review
An airy and contemporary arrangement of the rich Roman history of Narbonne. It was wonderful to see such local artefacts and it really brought the Roman times of Narbonne to life. The interactive screens accompanying relics like headstones, burial tombs and statues from the Roman times brought the people they memorialised to life. A pleasant 2 hours to spend in Narbonne and easy to arrive by bike. The temporary exhibition was less interesting and no English guide.
Alice P — Google review
Fantastic new museum, decently priced and can get in for free if on the right day. Highlights the extensive Roman history in the area with massive exhibits. Staff were also very helpful and kind.

Very nice archeological museum, focussing on the Roman period (1st century BC-3rd century AD). Now featuring a temporary exhibition with a audiovisual reconstruction of this first Roman colony in France. Well worth a visit. The museum makes an agreeable walk from the city centre along the canal.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Explore the wonders of African wildlife at Réserve Africaine de Sigean, a 300-hectare safari park where over 3,800 animals roam in semi-liberty. The park aims to preserve endangered species and educate visitors about the perils these animals face in their natural habitats. From lions, zebras, and giraffes to white rhinos and cheetahs, you can observe a diverse range of wildlife from the comfort of your car or on foot.
About a 20 min wait to get in on a Saturday morning in February. The park was fantastic, our kids 1 & 3 loved it, especially the Vivarium which had reptiles and fish in it. The drive-through safari took about 30mins, and we alright (you're generally quite far away from the animals), but I imagine it would be very slow during peak season times. The rest of the park is quite large, we walked around for about 5 hours, but had a great time. Unlike many similar venues, the animals generally had a lot of space and seemed happy. All except the wallabies, which looked miserable. Most of the snack bars at Ind the park were closed as it is off season. The main cafeteria was open, but the food was very poor and expensive, and they served us the worst hot chocolate you've ever seen (see pic). Take a picnic, there are lots of places you can stop to eat and enjoy the view. The toilet facilities were fine, and catered for young children too.
Jake ( — Google review
We had a fantastic time at the Réserve Africaine de Sigean! The whole experience was very well organized and thoughtfully designed, giving us the feeling of being on a real African safari. Driving through the park in our own car was a big highlight – not only did it bring us up close to the animals in a unique and exciting way, but it was also a huge advantage with the 35°C heat. Being able to enjoy the experience comfortably from the car made a big difference, especially with kids. The staff were friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about the animals and their well-being. You can tell the reserve is run with care and professionalism. We truly enjoyed every part of the visit – from the drive-through safari to the walking areas. A perfect mix of adventure, education, and comfort. Highly recommended for families and nature lovers!
Tatiana M — Google review
A very nice safari parc with a great variety of African wildlife. At some point I almost felt like being on a safari drive. The zoo part is quite small compared to other zoos but has some pretty cool features. I really liked the aviary concept with free roaming birds, sharing their space with alligators. Amazing.
Julien H — Google review
We loved it here, we saw so many animals. They have everything from big five to birds and reptiles.
Cristina H — Google review
It was a really great experience, drive through the different parts of the Réserve Africaine and see a little of animals that you normally only can see in a normal zoo. After the tour with the car, you also have a different way where you can walk and see many animals. The food at the kiosk is pretty good. At the entrance we had to wait a bit, because they need to check the trunk before you enter and then you can buy the tickets easily at the entrance. To be honest I didn’t see a line where you could enter if you bought your tickets beforehand. Definitely a good thing you can do is to download the corresponding app. There you can easily check where you are and you get all the needed information from the app as well.
Hannah P — Google review
That’s a huge park with very respectful and friendly way of treating animals. There is enough space for them as I can see. It doesn’t feel like a zoo. It’s more a window to a wildlife sanctuary. Even in winter you can find a restaurant to have some food. Meanwhile the infrastructure is really nice and well planned. There are parking, rest rooms, shops - everything that you may need after a long trip to this place. For sure this experience is worth it.
Kirill M — Google review
A different experience of African wildlife. Make sure to buy tickets online for a flawless entry. First a tour through different park themes with your car, followed by a walking tour. Rich variety of animals in an enormous park, divided in different themes. Great to enjoy with family and children. A must when you’re in the neighborhood.

The Roman Granary Museum in Narbonne offers guided tours of its subterranean warehouse system, which was originally built by the ancient Romans. This important Roman city has seen multiple re-uses over the centuries, with examples such as the Roman grain storage chambers being repurposed as medieval cellars. Visitors can also explore a small excavated section of the Via Domitia, one of the main Roman roads in France, located next to the main cathedral.
There is a chance to see a 2000 years old underground tunnels built by Romans. It’s a very interesting idea to combine the history of the region, archeology and some interactive quest you can take part in. Please, note that the museum has a break at midday and starts working at 14.00. Check its opening hours.

Fantastic and unexpected site. Many of the signs were in French and English which was great because data doesn't work so well underground in stone hallways. It was incredible to walk in the footsteps of first century Romans who would be storing goods here. We went to Narbonne Via after to see all the relics that had been sent to that museum.
Sara R — Google review
Interesting place to visit if you like Roman history. A minute or two from the cathedral, the museum is mostly underground in passageways that used to be the Granary. There is a display next to the gift shop showing the original layout. In the garden outside there are plaques and statues. The 5 euro entrance fee was reasonable

The Museum of Art and History of Narbonne is located within the Palais des Archeveques, along with the Archaeology Museum. The museum houses a diverse art collection spanning different periods and styles, providing insightful information about the old palace rooms. Visitors can also explore the Donjon Gilles-Aycelin, a late 13th-century watchtower offering panoramic views, and the birthplace of singer/songwriter Charles Trenet.
Definitely worth visiting! Very nice collection, plus you can climb to the top of the tower~
Anisat A — Google review
Very attentive and friendly staff, they love to tell you all about the place’s history and how the museum works. Because the joint Narbonne tickets encompasses a lot of different sights, it could be very confusing to see what is what and where is where, but everyone is ready to help you out. The art collection is lovely, with a wide selection of periods and styles, also good to see that there is incredible information on the function of the old rooms of the palace. What could be said is that the orientalism room is highly problematic and should be closed immediately. Such fetishism towards the middle east based on incorrect facts and seeing them as ‘others’ (read Said) is highly unacceptable in today’s age.
Jeroen D — Google review
Nicely curated art museum, the lighting could be better… The oriental section is especially interesting even though lacking a bit of context.

The collection didn’t interest me enough to pay to visit. However the building itself is great. You can also view the replica of Rome’s gift to Narbonne on the 2100 anniversary of its founding (it is also repeated on an arch at Pl De la Forum)

Small but good collection representing 700+ years. Few well known artists, except perhaps Bruegel. The Oriental exhibition was unique and well worth the visit to see. The architecture resembling the Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain, provided a nice background to the Oriental Exhibition. Note that the museum is on the third floor of the Archevêché. The ticket may be bought at the entrance to the Hotel d'Ville, or upstairs in the museum (same building). This same ticket gives you access to the museum and the Donjon (which is accessed through the gift shop, first floor). Confusing, for sure, but worth it.

Good for kids. Safe and clean. Don't forget to taste the hamburgers, they are huge and delicious at the food truck!

Bit of a scam. You are not allowed to wear your own swimming togs, but amazingly they sell the accepted type on site! Rude staff, disinterested lifeguards hiding far from the pool in the shade. Almost everything closed except the 50m outdoor pool. Stay well clear

The pool hours change all of the time. Impossible to understand when its open or not. Locker area old and a bit dirty.

(Translated by Google) Came with three 14-year-old girls to spend a lovely day... very disappointed with the trip. At the entrance, we were told that the indoor pools were closed. We came more to enjoy the outdoors and the play areas. But the second surprise was the slides and other facilities were also closed. That leaves only the outdoor aquatic pool, which is dedicated to laps for athletes. Plus, the private security service was unfriendly. In short, all this at a high price, of course. I won't travel so far to come to the Espace de Libération again!!!

The wine cellar of the Château de Ventenac en Minervois is a charming place where visitors can enjoy a variety of wines by bottle, case, or wine box. There is also a small selection of artisan soaps, potato crisps, cassoulet etc for purchase from the front foyer. The wine cellar is located in the heart of the castle and offers an interesting perspective into its history.
A must visit if you are cruising down canal du midi. It is a working wine making facility that offers plenty of local delicacies, an interesting walk through the 200+ year old building and the best part was a guided wine tasting across the entire range. The team there are extremely friendly, make some amazing products and you can really tell they care deeply about the region

Really phenomenal wines. Enjoyed everything we tasted and purchased, but the highlight was the 3L box wine, very smooth and delicious and one of my favourite wines I had this trip. Highly recommend all their wines.

This is a gem! Château is located right next to Canal du Midi. We did wine tasting and we had such a warm welcome. We bought a lovely bottle of liqueur with a very interesting label made of brass. Our host (sorry didn’t ask the name) also told us about the cabaret and the fireworks, but we couldn’t make it :(

We moored up here to see the old 1855 oak barge the Marie Theresa which is being restored. The wine tasting is a fantastic experience because of the huge beautiful stone wine cellar. The red is €1.80 a litre if you bring your own container. I recommend a visit.

Nice village on the Canal du Midi with its castle where you need to pay a fee to visit even if you buy some wine from them ... better enjoy a drink in the bistro nearby !

Brilliant - young gentleman there was excellent. Very polite and explained the different aspects of the wine really well. Bought a nice red - Cuvée 38. Very oaky and a beautiful drink.

Fairytale chateau complete with turrets, on the Canal du Midi, with a shop selling not only the full variety of Ventenac wines but a little selection of delicacies, trinkets, wood carvings, fridge magnets, books and tourist memorabilia. In Summer there is an upstairs terrace at night and for the hardier local there is a "petrol pump" dispensing their most competitively priced wines into your own receptacle.

Visitors can enjoy sailing, beach volleyball, jet-skiing, sand yachting, catamaran rides or sea kayaking.

Lovely place.. But very windy. Not ideal when sand is flying about everywhere. Forget trying to eat food on the beach, best to go to the pomanade for food or places to sit and eat. We had sand in the crisps bag, fruit tub etc.. But great beach, bring a sun umbrella or 2..and some chairs as towels and mats get covered in sand when it's windy(windy most of the time)

The area for children under 5 is even smaller... If you have the opportunity, go to the indoor park in Vias! Here I don't understand the carpeted floor which is so dirty it makes you vomit, and on top of that there are the incitements (people throw things on the ground without picking up after themselves, not watching their children). Good concept but needs to be reviewed (Original) C’est super d’avoir un lieu intérieur où les enfants peuvent s’amuser par temps de pluie. A stone's throw from Narbonne station, on the right when exiting, it can be admired between two connections, which is common here for those traveling by train. Seen from the rear we can see the wear of the reinforced concrete, with many visible reinforcements because the concrete is starting to fall into shreds; which shows the altogether ephemeral side of our contemporary architecture, in comparison with the nearby cathedral. To have !.
