St Michaels Church, built in the 14th century, stands as the village's oldest structure. Over time, it fell into disrepair after being superseded by St Marys Church in 1873. However, its luck changed when it was lovingly restored in 1994 and reopened to the public. Nestled amidst picturesque surroundings and embraced by ancient trees, this charming old church exudes a sense of tranquility and beauty.
Want a gate to Otherworld? Want to commune with the Fae? Long to be shrouded in peace and the contemplative? St. Michael's Old Church is all the above and more. There's a reason I've posted only photos of the ancient cemetery—THIS is the real sacred space that you'll want to stroll and rest in for the whole day.
Bethany B — Google review
A pity the church was closed when we tried to visit but the graveyard was so interesting it was still worth the time to look around. Some disruptive construction right next to church where a pedestrian bridge across the river is being replaced.
Will M — Google review
Picturesque & ancient old church, beautiful surroundings and key is available over the road at the Railway Museum.

Lovely little church. Worth a visit when in betsy. Open during the day with quite a large church yard.

Rhys G — Google review
St Michael's Old Church is the oldest building in Betws y Coed. The church was built in the 14th century on the banks of the River Conwy. It is thought to have replaced an older medieval prayer house, betws in Welsh. The church contains a collection of fine medieval features. A life-size stone effigy of Gruffydd ap Dafydd Goch lies near the chancel. A relative of Prince of Wales Llewelyn ap Gruffydd, Gruffydd ap Dafydd Goch died in battle between 1370 and 1380. Fragments of medieval stained glass can be found at the top of the east and west windows. The medieval font is small and square, featuring a simple carving of leaves and an arch of chevrons. A restoration took place in 1843 when the north aisle was added but Betws y Coed soon outgrew St Michael's with the arrival of the London-Holyhead road and the railway. In 1873, St Mary's Church opened and St Michael's was left to decay. A significant restoration took place in 1994 to save the building. It was declared redundant in the year 2000.

Abbey
Sacred & Religious Sites
Historic Sites
Cymer Abbey is a historic site located in the peaceful village of Llanelltyd. The abbey, founded in 1198, is well off the beaten track but surprisingly popular among visitors. It offers a tranquil setting despite its proximity to a small caravan park. The ruins are easily accessible with free parking available nearby. Information boards provide insight into the history of the abbey, making it an interesting visit for those curious about its past.
Who doesn't love to visit a good ruin? This bit of history is nearly a THOUSAND years old. Let that sink in a moment... a THOUSAND years old. The great majority of the abbey is gone, lost to history, but there is a handy sign that shows how it would have looked in its glory years. Nestled near the beautiful little town of Dolgellau, the abbey is well signposted and easy to find just off the dual carriageway. Located immediately across from some old-school holiday cottages on one side and a holiday caravan park on the other, I imagine this place gets its fair amount of visitors. Me and my family had the abbey to ourselves. I went a separate time with my Dad too in which we also had the place to ourselves. Absolutely superb for photo taking. Now, we did visit in mid-March, out of season - so that helped keep it quiet! No guests at any of the holiday houses or caravans until a few weeks later. So if you're looking to go and have a real quiet time, I imagine out of season is the way to go, but don't let that discourage you from going any other time. Entry is free and dogs are welcome on the grounds. Just be respectful and don't climb on the ruins. Stand back and bask in a bit of history.
Daniel W — Google review
A beautiful area, don't be put off by driving through a caravan park. It's small but we'll worth a visit. A beautiful bridge n river are nearby with good parking
Ickle S — Google review
The Abbey is at the end of a track with a couple of parking spaces. The Abbey is as expected, some ruins with a green space where some additional buildings once stood. As it is free entry, it is a good site to visit and spend 20-30 minutes looking around.
Steve H — Google review
Accessed via driving through the caravan park it has a small car park right next to it . It’s well cared for with mowed lawns! Only took 10 mins to walk round slowly but you can of course take longer!
Lyndsay P — Google review
Beautiful and peaceful. We parked in the National Trust car park at the end of the road by the bridge and walked approx 500yds to Abbey but noticed there are a few car parking places nearer the Abbey and farm.
Wendy W — Google review
Ok so as others have said there's not a lot here. Still if you like history and exploring ruins. It's definitely worth a look. It amazes me how these buildings are still here, the craftsmanship was definitely leagues ahead
Paula A — Google review
Interesting history slightly off the beaten track. Free/non ticketed entry. Continue through the caravan park to get to this semi hidden gem. Interesting partially destroyed abbey ruins.
Jack — Google review
What a lovely place this is, full of history and so interesting. The ruins are well maintained and set in beautiful countryside. Well worth stopping by. It's free admission, too.

Nestled within the enchanting sand dunes of Llandanwg, St Tanwg's Church is a remarkable historical gem often referred to as "the church in the sand." This ancient site, believed to have been established by St Tanwg around AD 435, stands as one of the oldest continuous places of Christian worship in the UK. The medieval structure we see today dates back to approximately the 13th century and has undergone adaptations over time.
Grade I building built on the dunes almost right next to the beach. The medieval structure dates back to around the 13th century, but there are traces of the site being used as a church as early as the 5th century. Regardless of your beliefs, it is worth coming here because of the location and history. There are few places like this left...
Lukasz T — Google review
The historic Church of St Tanwg is situated in the sand dunes at Llandanwg, and is also known as "the church in the sand" as the sand often covers the church and it has to be dug out of the sand. It is reputed to have been founded in the 5th century by St Tanwg, circa AD 435, and is believed to be one of the oldest places of continuous Christian worship in the UK. The church is a Grade I listed building. The interior is plain but impressive, with several old crosses and carved stones. In the churchyard at the east end is the grave of the Welsh poet, Sion Phillips, a contemporary of Shakespeare, who lived at nearby Shell Island. Alongside there's a car park (parking charges apply), which also gives access to the dunes and beach.
Mark R — Google review
Wonderful old church nestled in the sand dunes, circa 1300s and adapted in the1500s, surrounded by old graves, many of which have vanished under the shifting sands. When open you can see very old pews and a large stone said to date from the 5th century. This is a church unlike any other.
Martyn H — Google review
Small church right on the edge of the beach, best accessed from the car park. Beautiful and quiet for a moment of contemplation after a walk on the windy beach.
Joseph G — Google review
Lovely old church just off the beach.
Eddie G — Google review
Lovely church with a great history. I remember visiting this on holiday in the late 80's. Great to see it was open to look inside. Really recommend a visit if you are in the area.
Adam S — Google review
A lovely old church on the site of a early medieval church, sadly it was closed up so couldn't go inside ,but looking through the windows you can see it's still in use, the oldest grave stone i could see was 1694

When you find yourself in Harlech, don't miss the enchanting St Tanwg's Church located in Llandanwg. This quaint chapel is one of Britain's earliest Christian sites, beautifully set amidst sand dunes just a stone's throw from the coast. The graveyard here is particularly notable as it holds the remains of Sion Phillips, a Welsh poet who lived during Shakespeare's time.

St Padarn's Church holds great significance for one particular family, as it was the birthplace of their late father and a cherished holiday destination. Unfortunately, he passed away four years ago, prompting the family to gather at this church in Llanberis to scatter his ashes. The church itself is a historic Welsh establishment with a rich history dating back to 1914. It exudes an abundance of character and offers picturesque views of the nearby lake.

St Peter's Church, an Anglican place of worship, is a renowned religious institution. Located in a specific area, the church has gained prominence for its affiliation with the Anglican denomination. This religious establishment holds significant historical and cultural value within its community. St Peter's Church is widely recognized for its role as a Christian gathering space where individuals come together to practice their faith collectively.
This small yet beautiful church is located just off the main road through Llanbedr, there is no carpark located on site however you can park around the corner and walk around in less than 3 minutes. Just through the old Lychgate you'll walk through the small churchyard adorned with the usual slate headstones, commonplace throughout Wales. The church is a mix of medieval and 19th century, built with local stone and displaying some medieval roof timbers inside, as you can see from the photos the interior is simply decorated yet still gives off that typical spiritual aura found in these small chapels and churches. A few things to note inside are the various memorial and donated brass plates, the donated electric organ from the 40's, the 6th century (needs confirming) spiral carved stone and the few absolutely stunning stained glass windows displaying true craftsmanship and piety. Simply put, well worth a visit.
